Health agency in the Dominican Republic tackles needs Kerolle Initiative for Community Health an integral part of the community

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer Express reporter Kalisha Mendonsa recently travelled to the Dominican Republic to do humanitarian work with the Kerolle Initiative for Community Health. This story describes some of her observations there. ealth care looks different all over the world, but especially in rural third-world communities.

The Kerolle Initiative for Community Health is a non-profit health organization in the Dominican Republic that specifically addresses health needs in rural communities. The program was created by Dr. Reginald Kerolle in 2006 and has grown to include several small villages on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic.

Kerolle and his team work tirelessly to provide various forms of vital health care in rural communities, including pre-natal and pediatric care, clinics for chronic disease and emergency and disaster response.

“I believe that health care is a human right, and this is why we want to provide health care to people who need it in order to reduce health disparities,” Kerolle said.

Kerolle and his team work in poor, rural communities in the north coast of the country that are known as bateys. The bateys were originally created for Haitian migrants to reside in as they worked in the sugar cane industry. This industry is largely gone now, and many are left in the Dominican Republic without any form of work so their access to health care is very limited.

As well, many of the communities Kerolle and his team work in are quite isolated from other communities, making their access to medicines that much more difficult. Kerolle said he first visited a batey in 2006, shortly after graduation from medical school.

“When we got to the batey we saw enormous sugar cane plantations, small houses and a lot of people from infants to elderly people. Those people were not living in a good conditions,” he said.

“They were struggling to get food on a daily basis. Most of the children had some health issues that couldn’t be solved and so did the adults. They had no water, no latrines, no sanitation. This is how those people had been living for years.”

Kerolle said this experience was quite difficult. He returned to the luxury neighbourhood where he was living in the City of Santiago, brimming with questions and ideas.

“I found myself at a mental intersection where I had to decide between moving to the U.S. or to help those people,” he recalled.

As the Kerolle Initiative hosts health care clinics in the communities, members of the team also gather research towards these topics to plan for future development.

“Economy is very important. If we go into a community and there are no sustainable activities, we can say that there’s no development. If a person can’t work, there isn’t money flow. The person can’t send their children to school, and if they are sick they can’t have good health care,” Kerolle said.

He said there are many factors that influence health and can be affected by health. He said he notices the relationship between these topics, especially in rural communities. Kerolle and his team are proud to be providing the weekly services they do in the Dominican Republic, and monthly in Haiti.

The Kerolle Initiative for Community Health partners with universities in Canada and the United States to provide internships and travel opportunities for students.

Court heard that Lindsay dropped out of school after Grade 9 and did not have consistent employment with the exception of odd labour jobs. One report stated Lindsay began smoking marijuana when he was 11-years-old. He smoked the drug every day for nine years. Another report indicated Lindsay first tried crystal meth when he was 14 and also had a history of using cocaine and abusing alcohol.

Nesca said he believes these reports simply indicate Lindsay has a substance abuse problem.

Court also heard that while in custody at the Red Deer Remand Centre, Lindsay launched himself head first into the window, fell backwards and laid motionless.

“He was very ill,” said Nesca.

Lindsay has admitted to murdering Turner by stabbing her in the eyes with a pencil, strangling her and running over her with a vehicle, but the trial is being held to determine whether or not he is criminally responsible for Turner’s death.

Dr. Marc Nesca, a psychologist, took the stand for a second day on Monday for cross-examination by Crown Prosecutor Bina Border. At the centre of discussion was Lindsay’s history of drug abuse. Border’s cross-examination was focused on whether or not Lindsay’s drug abuse played a role at the time of Turner’s murder contrary to Nesca’s testimony that Lindsay suffered from paranoid schizophrenia psychosis.

Nesca first met Lindsay in September 2014 where he conducted two interviews. Nesca said Lindsay admitted to using intoxicants that month.

Jason Gordon Klaus has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson in relation to the deaths of his father Gordon Klaus, 61, his mother Sandra Klaus, 62 and his sister Monica Klaus, 40, in December 2013.

Joshua Gregory Frank has also been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in relation to the deaths as well as one count of arson and one count of injuring or endangering an animal in relation to the shooting death of the family dog.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether or not there is enough evidence to hold a trial.

The remains of Gordon and Monica were found in what was left of a burnt-out house in Castor on Dec. 8th, 2013.

Province’s approach to mental health is a good start The Alberta government is taking more action on mental health.

Earlier this week, the province accepted a report - titled ‘Valuing Mental Health: Report of the Alberta Mental Health Review Committee’ - in principle, and will be taking immediate action on six priority recommendations, they announced on Monday.

These recommendations include establishing a leadership team to work with community and health partners to develop an action plan to implement the report; increasing technology-based solutions by launching a child and youth mental health web site this spring; expanding access to addiction treatment by opening three new social detoxification beds for children and youth in Calgary; adding medical detox beds for adults, including six to eight new beds in Lethbridge and converting 20 beds in Red Deer from social to medical detox; working in partnership with First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities to develop an opiate addiction action plan and implementing a performance monitoring and evaluation framework to track results on report recommendations and benefits

to Albertans. These are critical first steps to helping those who suffer with mental illness in our province. This is an issue that can often be forgotten or left on the sidelines. But now with all the pressures that many Albertans are facing due to the sluggish economy, the timing couldn’t be more fitting.

The Mental Health Review was chaired by Dr. David Swann, MLA for Calgary Mountain View and leader of the Alberta Liberals.

Wellness Alberta is urging the Notley government to invest more resources in prevention by quickly adopting all of the relevant recommendations in the Swann report.

Mental illness is a major contributor to chronic disease and the Canadian Institute for Health Information has projected that mental illness will be among the leading causes of disability by 2030. Chronic disease currently represents 90% of the illness burden in Canada.

Also, Mara Grunau, executive director of the Centre for Suicide Prevention, is pleased to see suicide prevention prioritized in the report.

The report urges Albertans to reclaim their role as frontrunners in suicide prevention with leadership from the Government of Alberta collaborating with Alberta Health Services, the Centre for Suicide Prevention and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Each year more Albertans die by suicide than in traffic fatalities, officials said.

Alberta has the second highest suicide rate among the provinces and the rate is climbing as we have heard this year as the economy continues to tank.

In identifying suicide prevention as a priority, the Report calls for sustained, “Funding and leadership through mandating the Addiction and Mental Health Implementation Team to coordinate activities and interventions across Alberta to support individuals, families and communities in addressing this issue (suicide).”

Officials point out that the Centre for Suicide Prevention is ready for this collaborative work. It is poised to be an active part of the implementation plan.

As a branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Centre for Suicide

Prevention has been educating caregivers with the knowledge and skills to respond to people at risk of suicide.

Education is a best-practice in suicide prevention: everyone must all learn to identify people at risk and develop the skills to respond.

As mentioned, the Mental Health Review was led by a committee co-chaired by Swann and Danielle Larivee, minister of Municipal Affairs and MLA for Lesser Slave Lake.

Tyler White, CEO for Siksika Health Services and Heather Sweet, MLA for Edmonton-Manning were committee members.

“The current mental health system is not meeting the needs of an increasing number of Albertans. We can and must do better. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Albertans have heard this,” said Swann. “Successful implementation of the Mental Health Review will require a higher level of leadership from Alberta Health, and the new AHS board, than that provided by previous governments. Today’s six priority recommendations are an excellent start.”

Calgary sells $100,000 private vehicle to cover parking fine The Criminal Code makes it illegal to do anything with the intention of alarming the Queen.

I’m not sure our courts have ever found someone guilty of violating this law but, regardless, Canadians are expected to treat Her Majesty with a certain minimum standard of decency.

The same is true for our governments’ treatment of Canadians. Section 12 of the Charter prohibits our governments from treating us in ways that are shocking or alarming. In fact, no government in Canada can treat anyone in ways that outrage Canadians’ standards of decency. And this is a very good thing. None of us want to live in a country where the authorities can impose grossly disproportionate and brutal penalties for relatively minor infractions.

On Jan. 13th, the City of Calgary sold Lukas Pesut’s truck after impounding it 36 days prior. The regulations of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act permit the city to deem a vehicle abandoned after 72 hours and then sell it 15 days later after giving notice by ordinary mail to the owner’s last known address.

Lukas’ truck – worth approximately $100,000 – was heavily modified for his work in the Northern Alberta oil patch.

It contained an estimated $35,000 worth of tools in

locked boxes, a hydraulic hoist worth over $10,000, and a bed valued at more than $40,000, not to mention other customizations for work in the pipe industry.

This highly valuable truck was necessary for Lukas’ job and yet it was sold at auction by the city for a mere $18,500.60.

And if Lukas wants any of the money from the sale – minus the City’s costs for towing, impounding, and selling, of course – he needs to fill out a form and allow 90 days for the claim to be processed.

How did this happen? It started when Lukas drove his truck from Grande Prairie and parked it in front of a friend’s house in southwest Calgary. Lukas was in a rush to catch a flight to Germany so that he could spend the holiday season with his moth-

er who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. As it turns out, the truck was in a twohour residential parking zone and Lukas failed to request a free permit from the City. A neighbour complained and the truck was impounded.

Lukas’ friend contacted the City to try to resolve the matter after the truck was impounded. She was told by parking officials that they couldn’t help her since she didn’t know the vehicle’s plate number. She was also unable to reach Lukas to get the plate number since he had lost his phone en route to Germany. And since only registered owners may remove items from an impounded vehicle, she could not even retrieve the truck’s contents for Lukas.

Like a Rube Goldberg machine, the neighbour’s

complaint triggered a series of events that led inexorably to the sale of the truck. Did none of those involved think in a moment of self-doubt that what they were doing to Lukas might be unethical, immoral, or illegal?

Apparently not, since the entire process continued on until an unknown buyer purchased the truck at far below market value.

Here’s the problem: proportionality. No one – not even Lukas – thinks that parking in a two hour zone without a permit should go unpunished.

That is a parking offence.

But similarly, no one with a moral compass thinks that losing a $100,000 of property for a mere parking offence is appropriate either. What should have happened? Parking tickets? Yes. Impounding the vehicle? Sure. Selling it at

a fraction of its market value and only relinquishing the proceeds upon request? That’s beyond the pale.

Section 12 of the Charter protects us from two categories of government treatment: those that are inherently abhorrent and those that are grossly disproportionate. No Canadian government – including Calgary – can treat us in a fashion that is far out of proportion with what is appropriate considering the circumstances.

So ask yourself this: is it appropriate for Calgary to take $100,000 in property and undermine Lukas’ ability to earn a living for failing to get a free permit?

Japanese students enjoy Red Deer visit

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Six Japanese exchange students are currently getting a taste of life in Red Deer through the Muskoka Language International (MLI) group.

The Vancouver-based organization has been bringing exchange students to Canada for over 20 years now. Each student is welcomed for a home-stay with a local family and attends classes in their chosen city. Currently, there are two students enrolled at Hunting Hills High School, two at Lindsay Thurber High School and two at Ecole Notre Dame.

This is the first time students from the Kitatoshima High School in Tokyo, Japan have been brought to the City, according to Liz Kim, high school program coordinator with MLI. “We are just very thankful for all the wonderful families in Red Deer and the wonderful partnership with the school districts in the City,” Kim said.

“Things have been smooth and going perfect so far, specifically because of the wonderful partnership we have with the school districts in Red Deer and also the wonderful hospitality the citizens of Red Deer have shown. We hope that this group will continue to grow in the years to come, and they may even stay longer in the upcoming years.”

The students come to stay in Canada for a nine-

week program of immersive language development and family life experiences. Each day, they attend classes in English with their new Canadian peers before returning to their host family homes.

Kim explained that MLI designs custom programs for high schools and students, not only from Japan, but for students all over the world. She said they work with markets in Asia, South America and Europe to tailor the program for the needs of the students and groups.

She said the girls currently visiting the City have been busy, taking part in activities like skating and tubing, as well as visiting Banff and Edmonton.

“After school the students go back home to their homestay families. The families are asked to give the students a feeling of what a typical Canadian family is like and to provide for them as they would for their own children. We stress the fact that they students are here to become part of the family, rather than just be a guest.”

Kim said this immersive experience is beneficial for the students and that the MLI model helps to create meaningful experiences during the exchange.

“We are always excited to hear the positive feedback we get from the students and families,” Kim said.

“It’s amazing to see how families and students can form relationships so quickly and they really feel like they

Giving women the right to vote On Feb. 24th, 1916, a new session of the Alberta Legislature opened with the traditional Speech from the Throne. Two major pieces of legislation were promised. One was a bill to implement the prohibition of the sale of alcohol, as mandated by a province-wide plebiscite on July 21st, 1915. The other was an act to give women the right to vote.

In some respects, the two measures were linked. For many years, there had been a push to give women the right to vote as it was correctly presumed they would give strong support to the implementation of Prohibition.

However, Prohibition had received a strong endorsement by the male electorate even though women did not have the right to vote yet. Moreover, Prohibition was actually part of a larger progressive movement to remove what was seen as a leading cause of poverty and domestic violence for families.

There was also growing pressure to improve lives for women and children through such reforms as the passage of a Dower Act (giving women legal rights to family property) and maternal custodial rights. Giving women the right to vote would give a big boost to these causes.

DAWE easily seen in the records of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. For example, in May 1914, the Central Alberta region’s W.C.T. U. argued for extending the franchise to women on the grounds that, “Who knows more about the needs of our children – the street loafer or the pure-minded educated mother.”

Similar stances were taken by other groups, such as the Alberta Women’s Institute (which had as its provincial secretary Jean Muldrew of Red Deer), the powerful United Farm Women of Alberta, and the Local Council of Women, which formed a Red Deer branch in the spring of 1916.

Despite some claims to the contrary, there was actually a lot of support in Red Deer and across Central Alberta for the women’s suffrage and social reform proposals. As early as 1901, when Red Deer was incorporated as a town, the right to vote was given to unmarried women and widows with property.

In 1913, Francis Galbraith, the first mayor of the City of Red Deer, proposed the right to vote should be given to all women and men

over the age of 21. His proposal failed, not because of the extension of the municipal franchise to women, but because he wanted to also remove the requirement to own property. Hence, the city charter ended up giving the right to vote to all married and unmarried adult women, so long as they owned property.

In 1916, when the Red Deer Branch of Local Council of Red Deer was formed, Mayor John Carswell hosted the inaugural meeting at City Hall and made an opening speech supporting the work of the LCW. The keynote speaker that day was Henrietta Muir Edwards of the national Local Council of Women. While in Red Deer, she stayed at the home of Jessie and Francis Galbraith.

When the Liberal government of Premier A.L. Sifton announced the bill to give votes to women in Alberta in 1916, the Leader of the Conservative Opposition, Edward Michener, who was also the MLA for Red Deer, gave his unequivocal support. Moreover, in his reply to the Speech from the Throne, Michener stated he not only endorsed the principles of equal suffrage, he also supported ‘the logical conclusion’ that women should, “Be accorded all the privileges that men now enjoy”.

This group would not duplicate the Local Council of Women, which was a federation of women’s organization. Instead, it would have as its main focus the extension of political, legal and social rights for women. Not surprisingly, that stance earned Michener strong support from women in the provincial election of 1917 and reelection as Red Deer’s MLA. Meanwhile, while the right to vote for women came into legal force in Alberta on April 19th, 1916,

similar measures had already been passed in Manitoba (Jan. 28th, 1916) and Saskatchewan (March 14th, 1916).

The federal government, on the other hand, did give the right to vote to women in national elections in 1917, but limited the measure to women who were serving in the armed forces, or else had husbands and/or sons who were serving in the First World War. Universal national suffrage for all adult women did not come into effect until Jan. 1st, 1919.

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Wildrose party leader Brian Jean took time last week to meet with City officials and local media outlets to get a feel for the pressing issues of Central Albertans.

Jean spoke with a number of mayors in the region, listening to major concerns to try and develop some solution processes to take forward to other levels of government.

He spoke to a wide variety of issues, from the expansion of the Red Deer Regional Hospital and development of an Sylvan Lake Urgent Care Centre to the issues surrounding the Equalization and Municipal Government Acts.

“The biggest issue here that I heard loud and clearly from every single public official here today is more than anything, they want communication and transparency to know the timing of projects,” Jean said during a meeting with local media.

“The most important part to get these projects going is government will. If the government has no will to even talk about these projects, then we have to exercise our right to change that government. I think that’s what Albertans are going to do sooner or later if they don’t get some clarification from the NDP government as far as what they’re planning.”

Jean recognized the pressing matter of the Sylvan Lake Urgent Care facility, which has been proposed to address the need of a 24-hour care facility in the Sylvan Lake area. Jean said this issue was brought up from several Central Alberta mayors due to its ability to alleviate some of the pressure on the Red Deer Regional Hospital as that facility looks toward expansion.

He said his concern for those projects as well as other major infrastructure projects across the province - lies in not having a definite plan or timeline from the provincial government for communities to work with in terms of development.

“We heard from Brian Mason in the fall that there was going to be put forth a list of all infrastructure projects, and there is still nothing so we’re very concerned about that,” Jean said.

“We know that people in Red Deer - and all across Alberta - need to know when they’re going to receive less of a burden and more of an investment from the government on the things they need. It could be urgent care, like we’re hearing in this area, or roads and bridges which are becoming big concerns in other places.”

He said this information is critical to municipal planning and provincial development.

Several controversial issues were also addressed by the Wildrose party leader, including the country’s Equalization Program, the Bombardier bailout and the timing of the Municipal Government Act changes and the greenhouse gas emissions review.

“The Wildrose party has been listening to Albertans and we have clearly heard the belief that the equalization system in this country is broken,” he said.

“Not only do citizens believe it in Alberta, but we’re hearing this across provinces and from economists. The system is broken. Right now is an opportu-

“We’re not going to back down from any issue that has to do with the quality of life for Albertans. Equalization is one of the issues that the provincial government has an obligation to tackle and to tackle head-on - not to avoid it and skirt around it,” he said.

Jean also criticized the provincial NDP government on their timing of the Royalty Review and Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) review.

“The NDP should have not called the review - especially not the royalty review and the GHG review - at a time when we have plummeting oil prices and people are losing jobs by the thousands. Alberta lost 100,000 jobs last year and these were good paying jobs. They were some of the highest paying jobs in Canada, and these people paid more taxes than others as well,” Jean said.

“This is going to impact not only Alberta, but right across the country. It seems that people in Ontario and even in Edmonton are just not realizing that.”

Jean will be travelling this week to Ontario for a meeting with the Prime Minister to better articulate the needs of Albertans and to hopefully bring back some solutions for future development. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

ACCUSED MURDERER MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE

A man charged with second degree murder made his first appearance in Red Deer court on Monday.

Shane Dion McPhee, 40, has been charged in relation to the suspicious death of a man who was dropped off at the Red Deer Regional Hospital earlier this month.

On Feb. 13th, the Red Deer RCMP initiated an investigation into the suspicious death of a man who was dropped off at the Red Deer Hospital.

On Feb. 16th, an autopsy was held at the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office and it was determined that his manner of death was a homicide. The deceased male was identified as 47-year-old William Blaine Baker. He will return to court on March 14th.

vincial court last week via CCTV. Heywood, 45, was arrested on Dec. 27th by Innisfail RCMP on outstanding warrants of attempted murder for an offence that took place Dec. 21st near Eckville.

At approximately 11 p.m., the RCMP were conducting patrols in the town of Bowden when they spotted Heywood in a stolen GMC Sierra truck on Cottonwood Road near RR 10. When police attempted to pull the vehicle over it failed to stop and a pursuit began out of Bowden where the truck struck a power pole, unoccupied parked vehicle and an electrical box. The vehicle continued onto Hwy. 2A where police were able to deploy a spike belt to ensure public safety which the fleeing vehicle drove over. The truck then drove into an open field where the deflating tires brought the vehicle to a stop. The driver, who police identified as Heywood, then fled on foot where he was arrested at 11:30 p.m., a short distance later by RCMP members who

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Heywood also faces a number of criminal code charges as a result of the police pursuit and arrest. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant issued

by Olds RCMP for assault, assault with a weapon and uttering threats in an unrelated investigation.

He returns to court Feb 24th.

SYLVAN LAKE ROBBERY SUSPECT IN COURT A Sylvan Lake man charged with a number of robbery offences made a brief court appearance last week.

Aaron Mays, 24, has been charged with seven counts of robbery, seven counts of wearing a disguise in the commission of an offence and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The robberies commenced in Sylvan Lake on Dec. 13th at the Plaza liquor store; then again on Dec. 27th at the Plaza liquor store; Dec. 29th at the CIBC and on Jan. 4th at the Lakeway Liquor store.

On Jan. 5th the Lakeway Liquor store was robbed again and 16 minutes later the Plaza Liquor was robbed. On Jan. 11th the Bayshore Market was

also robbed.

Mays will return to court March 21st. He is currently out on bail.

TRIAL SET FOR MAN CHARGED WITH HIT AND RUN A three day trial has been set for a man charged after an incident in which a woman was struck by a vehicle and killed in Penhold last year.

Jason John Powell, 40, of Red Deer, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing death, failure to provide a breath sample, and driving while disqualified. Powell was also issued a driving disqualification after being convicted in Red Deer in June 2014 of driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.

RCMP have said on Nov. 7th, 41-year-old Chasity Holman, of Red Deer, was struck around 5:45 p.m. near the Penhold Multiplex on Waskasoo Avenue.

She was taken to hospital where she later died of her injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a Chevrolet Impala with a single occupant drive off, but the vehicle became stuck on a nearby berm. The driver tried to flee on foot but was arrested shortly after.

Rotary trip offers insight into India

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Rotary Clubs around the world aren’t only involved in tangible projects that make a profound difference in people’s lives - they also actively connect with counterparts around the world as well.

Red Deer resident Garnet Ward, a member of the Rotary East club, journeyed to India late last year with his wife and several other Rotarians to connect with Rotary Club members in communities there.

The trip was part sight-seeing, but primarily about seeing the world through their counterparts’ eyes and learning about ways Rotarians in that part of the world work to make a difference in their communities as well.

“Rotary has a program called the Rotary Friendship Exchange,” he explained, adding there are 31,000 clubs in the world. “There is also expected to be a reciprocal visit this summer - although nothing has been firmed up at this point.”

Ward and his wife Sharon were among those selected

from the local district for the trip. They decided that they would do a tour of some of the country first, then join up with the Rotary Friendship Exchange. That meant lots of bus trips, which suited the Wards just fine. “The beauty of the travel was in the bus trips, because you really saw how the people lived. When you realize that all the sugar cane that is produced in India is cut by hand; all the cotton is picked by hand - you wouldn’t of course know that travelling by air.

In the bus, you’d be driving along and see somebody’s house which consisted of a rope between two trees with a blue tarp overtop of it.”

He added that one-third of the world’s poorest population lives in India.

Garnet described the geography of India as similar in size to the provinces of Quebec and Ontario and Alberta. “But there are 1.26 billion people there,” he explained, as compared to Canada’s total population of around 35 million.

“We’d be asked, ‘How can you live where it gets to be so cold’. But I would wonder, how can you live where

Ultimately, the Wards, who have travelled several times with Rotary, were again able

to see the world from a different perspective.

And although some of it was difficult to witness and challenging to say the least, there was much that was enlightening and inspiring.

Ultimately, they met up with their host Rotary family, plus several other Rotarians, in Solapur which is located in southeastern India.

“One of the things that we enjoyed the most was the sense of closeness, and the sense of family,” he said, recalling visiting a village just a short ways from Solapur. It marked a visit to the home village of their hosts, and also fell during Diwali which is the Hindu festival of lights.

It’s described as one of the happiest holidays in India and Nepal with significant preparations.

“What I found very, very touching and quite interesting is they took us to this Hindu temple, and what was neat about it - there was an inscription on the wall that Ghandi had visited there in 1927. We had these garlands of flowers around us, and they started to sing a song - almost like a blessing.

Their sounds were echoing off the walls - it was just mind-blowing; it was just a wonderful experience.

“It doesn’t matter where you go - people want to know if they are safe, are their kids going to get an

education and be able to get a job and are they going to have enough money to live on for the rest of their lives?”

Meanwhile, he was also inspired by the ongoing work of Rotarians there.

He described one particular feeding program for folks with no family and no way of getting food. “Hundreds of meals are delivered - and what was neat about it was that initially that’s what the project was, but then they needed so many people to help prepare these meals.”

The Rotary’s 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man - Paul P. Harris.

The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on Feb. 23rd, 1905, as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.

Today they are working together from around the globe both digitally and in-person to solve some of the world’s most challenging problems and their commitment to service is ongoing. editor@reddeerexpress.com

Week of February 24 - March 2, 2016 The Red Deer College Psychology Society is hosting the second annual Interdisciplinary Symposium Conversation on Mind Friday, March 11th. Four speakers — Dr. Jamie Prowse-Turner, Dr. Anomi Bearden, Dr. Randy Johnson, and Dr. Daniel Haas — will discuss the important topic of morality, and where it comes from.

“Morality impacts our everyday decisions and the starting points for these concepts has now become tangibly addressable, through the collective approaches of neuroscience, psychology, anthropology and philosophy,” says Psychology Society President Daniel Geary. “It is extremely important to engage in a dialogue of this magnitude, especially given the changing social climate, in a country that celebrates its diversity as does Canada.” Conversation on Mind: Where Does Morality Come From takes place March 11 in the Margaret Parsons Theatre. SURVEY SHOWS MAJORITY OF HUNTING HILLS BUSINESSES EXPECTED TO GROW HOSTS BIKE-A-THON A recent survey sent out to Chamber of Commerce members showed the majority of businesses are expecting to either grow or stay about the same over the next 12 months.

Only 16% of respondents expected to see contraction.

SURVEY ON OUTDOOR ICE USE Over the next several weeks, the City of Red Deer will be surveying outdoor rink users about their current use and overall experiences with

the various facilities.

City staff will visit all 71 boarded and snow bank rinks as well as the Ice Oval, Bower Ponds and Anders on the Lake natural ice surfaces to conduct the survey.

The City is interested in how often citizens visit the outdoor rinks, how they travel to rinks and what would improve their overall enjoyment.

The outdoor ice survey is just one component of an overall Ice Facilities Plan being completed by the City.

The Ice Facilities Plan will assess current indoor and outdoor ice facility use, consider the state of existing infrastructure, and provide recommendations for when and where the City should focus future facility development and service delivery.

METH LAB BUSTED

On Feb. 21st, members from Stettler RCMP, Bashaw RCMP, Killam RCMP, RCMP emergency response teams from Edmonton and Calgary, RCMP CLEAR team, RCMP Air services, RCMP special tactical operations team, Stettler regional fire department and Stettler EMS attended and executed a search warrant on a property north and east of Stettler. Four male suspects were taken into custody.

On the rural property, investigators located, dismantled and seized equipment and other products used in an illegal process to create crystal methamphetamine. Along with the meth lab, several firearms were located and seized, one of which is an SKS assault riffle which was loaded with a 30 round magazine. All male suspects arrested on scene are facing multiple charges regarding the meth lab and firearms.

Arrested are a 30-year-old male of Big Valley, a 37-yearold male of Stettler, a 64-yearold male from Stettler and a 26-year-old male Drumheller.

RCMP INVESTIGATE SHOT FIRED Red Deer RCMP are looking for assistance to identify a man who fired a shot at a passing vehicle at the intersection of 19th St. and 50th Ave. on Feb. 11th.

The incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. as the victim was turning east onto 19th St. from 50th Ave.; he reported that a newer-looking green Chrysler 200 or 300 pulled up beside his vehicle and a man in the front passenger seat leaned out the window and fired what appeared to be a handgun across the hood of the victim’s vehicle.

The suspect Chrysler was last seen travelling eastbound on 19th St.; it ran a red light at 49th Ave. and continued eastbound.

The victim was not injured.

The suspect is described as Caucasian in his mid 20s. He has a bald head and a skinny face.

ARMED ROBBERY AT MOTOR INN RCMP are looking for the man who robbed staff at knifepoint at the Aladdin Motor Inn shortly after 6 a.m. on Feb. 19th. The suspect entered the motel at approximately 6:15 a.m., produced a knife and threatened staff. He fled on

foot heading northbound, with an undisclosed amount of money. Police Dog Services tracked the suspect to a nearby parking lot, where the track ended; further investigation revealed that the suspect had parked a silver car there, walked to the motel to commit the robbery, then returned to the car and fled northbound on Gaetz Avenue at a high rate of speed. The car is believed to be a Toyota Corolla.

ATTEMPTED HOME INVASION Red Deer RCMP are looking

for two men with a handgun who attempted an unsuccessful home invasion at a home in the Anders neighbourhood shortly before 3 a.m. Feb. 16th.

At about 2:40 a.m., RCMP received a 9-1-1 call that two men wielding a handgun had attempted to force their way into a home on Arnold Close.

The resident forced the suspects back, closed the door and called police. The suspects then fled

on foot heading west on Averill Street. RCMP responded immediately and contained the area, searching for the two men.

Police Dog Services tracked the suspects as far as the East Hill Shopping Centre but did not locate them. The suspects were not known to anyone in the house, and neither person in the house was injured.

The first suspect, wielding the handgun, is described as

Caucasian, 6’ tall with a slender build and short brown hair. He was wearing a black soft shell jacket and black pants and carrying a black pistol.

The second suspect is described as Caucasian, 5’10” tall with a small pot belly. He was wearing a black toque, a black pullover hoodie with the hood up and dark pants.

Ten Thousand Villages to host major ‘rug event’

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Staff and volunteers of the Red Deer-based Ten Thousand Villages are gearing up for one of their milestone yearly events - a major rug sale featuring works from Pakistan. The Rug Event runs March 4th to March 19th.

On the evening of March 4th, folks are invited to come out for ‘From Loom to Living Room: The History and Stories Behind Bunyaad Fair Trade Rugs’ which will be held at 7 p.m. at Ten Thousand Villages in downtown Red Deer (4925 – 48th St.) The evening is ideal for anyone considering an Oriental rug purchase or who would like to learn more about the art of Oriental rug making, rug care and room design.

“It’s a major event - it’s been a year and a half since we had our last event, and we had more than 2,000 lbs of rugs come in which equates to 200 rugs. This year, we should have even more,” said Tina Bale, the store’s manager. It’s a wonderful opportunity for local shoppers to purchase a rug of outstanding quality while making a profound difference in another person’s life. “They are all hand done in the traditional method, so it’s keeping the artistry alive while providing for the people who make them,” she said, adding that families often work together with others in their communities to create the rugs.

“Artisans in Pakistan earn a living wage and North American consumers get an excellent quality rug that has an impact felt around the world.

“They are so beautiful - and when you find out where they come from and what it takes to get it to your home, it just makes them that much more beautiful and cherished.”

From intricate florals to hand-spun natural dye wool tribals, every Bunyaad rug has been designed and hand-knotted by highly-skilled and fairly paid adults.

“They will literally last for 100 years. They are definitely an investment piece that can be passed down.”

According to a press release, in many North African, Middle Eastern and Asian factories, workers toil for hours in difficult conditions and for little pay on these types of rugs. And although the situation is improving thanks to global watchdog organizations, children continue to be sold into the industry as slave labour.

That’s where this sale comes in - Ten Thousand Villages partners with Bunyaad, a fair trade organization in Pakistan. Gwen Repeta, Canada rug coordinator, will be sharing the incredible story of Bunyaad rugs during the March 4th evening event.

“We’re seeing a lot of new, trendy designs from Bunyaad. It’s very cool what’s coming down the pipe,” said Repeta, who visited the Lahore facility in January of 2015.

Keeping costs down for your destination wedding As we find ourselves in this recession, people are not putting their destination wedding plans on hold. I have steady inquiries about destination weddings.

The biggest concern with the lovely couples are how can they maximize their budget?

A plunging dollar, wedding packages priced in USD, and having to ask their cherished guests to pay for travel in tough times are all variables that can make or break the bank.

First, find a travel agent with experience in destination weddings.

A destination wedding specialist or coordinator will stretch your budget. There are many variables to consider in the beginning parts of the process.

When, where, and who to choose to travel with all reflects the budget.

To keep prices generally lower, look for a closer and convenient destination like Mexico. Tour operators fly there almost daily during peak and shoulder seasons from most major gateways across Canada.

Mexico is also considered the top wedding destination.

This keeps competition fierce and price reflects that with tour operators and resorts. Tour operators put together pricing discounts associated with different chains of hotels and change promotions constantly.

Finally, how far in advance should a couple book?

This explanation could go on and on as there are so many parts to answering this question properly. To put it in short, I receive calls of shy brides thinking they have jumped the gun in calling a year or more in advance.

Not at all! Tenacity by the agent and time can be key to finding that golden price!

The largest thing to remember is that as the dollar goes down, prices go up.

Consider contacting a travel agent or certified wedding specialist 12 to 15 months in advance. There are so many positives to doing this.

You benefit from early booking bonuses which in many cases can be huge discounts in the amounts of hundreds of dollars per person.

This depends on types of resorts and resort contracts. It’s always worth the try.

Another benefit to booking early is that you need only a small deposit of generally anywhere from $150 - $200 per person from the bride and groom.

With the low deposits, this allows you to wrangle guests over the span of three months and holds your rates until departure (based on availability). The final benefit today is that your guests will have

time to pay off their holiday. In many cases, this could be anywhere from 60 to 45 days prior to departure. If you book your wedding a year and half in advance, that’s over a year to save! Guests who are struggling can actually contemplate the idea of going if they have enough time.

All in all, destination weddings are complex and any bride and groom trying to do this on their own can find it very stressful.

I’ve had calls where people are ready to elope. They have been through enough and were sick of the cumbersome complexity of it. Sorting your dreams out with a professional is the way to go. This way you will be able to get what you want to make your dreams come true!

Natalie MacMaster joins Johnny Reid for March show

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Acclaimed Canadian fiddling sensation Natalie MacMaster is bringing her fiddling mastery to Red Deer next month as part of a spring tour in support of Johnny Reid.

She performs at the Centrium on March 5th as part of Reid’s ‘What Love is All About’ tour.

The tour will feature her traditional Cape Breton fiddling style, foot-stomping jigs as well as new favourites from her latest CD One which she recorded along with husband Donnell Leahy last year.

Leahy is the musical leader of the acclaimed Celtic family group Leahy.

He and MacMaster met as teenagers, found individual massive career success, and eventually reconnected and were married, becoming the first couple of Celtic music.

Today they have six kids, and perform together to sold-out crowds in theatres across North America and the UK. “Donnell and I, we think the same on everything,” she explains during a break on the tour from the west coast. “So there is an ease there - after 13 years of marriage, we know each other pretty darn well,” she adds of collaborating with her husband on last year’s project One. “It’s very easy for him to encourage and to direct me, and I for him,” she said of how the duo helps each other along their individual creative paths. “It’s exciting to share that with your spouse.”

A completely instrumental album with creative medleys in the Celtic-style mixed with originals, with the exception of one track, a deeply emotional vocal lament Cagaran Gaolach sung by MacMaster – marking her first ever lead feature vocal to appear on an album.

Some of the unconventional approaches used in the studio for this fiddle-centric album in-

cluded distorted electric guitars on the driving up tempo Fiddler’s Despair, and two players on one piano on Pastiche for Anne and a drum kit made of paint cans and a cardboard box on Joyous Waltz.

It was a chance meeting of MacMaster with legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple) at a session he was producing for Reid that led to the musical match between the star producer and the Celtic couple.

Ezrin recruited Justin Cortelyou (Taylor Swift, Ke$ha, Alan Jackson), to co-produce and the two headed to Cape Breton to record the Celtic couple with ace session musicians Mark Kelso, Mac Morin, Tim Edey, Jamie Gatti, Rachel Aucoin and Sabin Jacques.

MacMaster said the couple had about 17 cuts going into the project, which they left to Ezrin to cut down to the correct number to record. “When you have someone with an outsider ear hearing it fresh for the first time, you can have confidence in their decision.”

Looking back to her musical roots, MacMaster grew up in Nova Scotia where communities hold countless events where music is simply woven into the mix. That goes for home life as well. Kitchen parties are a fixture, with relatives bringing out the instruments for lively times of playing all kinds of traditional melodies.

“Those events are all around you. Every time there was any family function – and there were a lot of them – there was always music.” Her uncle, Buddy MacMaster, is also a well-known east coast fiddling genius. “My mother always had music playing - she had cassette tapes in those days,” she adds with a chuckle.

House parties that of course included a heavy emphasis on music were scheduled events, often around special occasions like Christmas or baptisms.

“There would be two or three

Having been performing herself from such a young age, Natalie of course knew music would always be a major part of her life. But the career she enjoys today has unfolded in the most natural way. She didn’t set out to be a musical celebrity.

“I didn’t know it was possible to have a career in it – I wasn’t that analytical at the age of nine.

I just started playing because I loved it, and I always knew I’d be playing.”

electrifying performer all over the world, thrilling Carnegie Hall audiences and Massey Hall crowds; captivated radio audiences with appearances on the CBC and Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and warmed TV viewers with spots on Christmas specials like Rita MacNeil’s Christmas and Holiday Festival On Ice. “It’s just reaffirmed to me how much I am meant to do this because it brings such a thrill,” she says of her life as a musician.

“I’m going to play the fiddle until they put me in the grave.”

Meanwhile, she and Leahy are recording a Christmas CD and are planning a tour this coming winter - along with the kids.

“We’re doing a family Christmas tour.”

Natalie said teaching her kids how to play a number of instruments has also been a joy. Their already a talented lot - dancing, piano-playing and fiddling are already flourishing skills amongst her brood.

“We spend our whole lives, really, crafting how we are going to inspire them musically. We do fiddle lessons everyday, and piano, and dancing,” she said. “It’s a lot of work, but to watch them play it’s a true blessing and joy. It’s so worth the energy you put into it.”

English singer Frank Turner performs in Red Deer

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Acclaimed folk singer Frank Turner is heading to Red Deer to play The International Beer Haus on Feb. 29th.

Having spent years on the UK hardcore circuit, Turner picked up an acoustic guitar in 2005 and dug deep for what have been described as personal, introspective and rousing folk tunes.

His steady rise has seen him play in places as far removed as China, it’s seen him supporting Green Day at Wembley Stadium, not to mention playing the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and headlining his own show at the O2 in London.

Yet he continues to support independent venues, play smaller towns and work with a host of rising musicians.

With six studio CDs including Tape Deck Heart and his 2015 chart-topping Positive Songs For Negative People - Turner is also touted as being one of the most inspiring and successful independent musical entertainers around.

He hails from Meonstoke, Hampshire, England. He was born in Bahrain where his father worked as an investment banker.

Upon return to England, the family settled first in Winchester before moving to Meonstoke. Turner was educated on a scholarship at Eton College, where he

studied alongside Prince William.

“My mom was a prime school music teacher, and my parents are musical but they listen to classical music. They don’t really believe in drums,” he says with a laugh during a chat from Hamburg, Germany. But a growing passion for music was undeniable, and an interest in rock particularly hit the young Turner pretty much like a tidal wave, he recalls.

As mentioned, he eventually landed a guitar and started playing in a number of cover bands with his buddies. “It sort of evolved over time.”

There was room for focus on other areas - he attended the London School of Economics where he read history which he does remain very passionate about as well.

But his musical career really began with the alternative band Kneejerk during his teen years.

In 2001, Turner joined London post-hardcore band Million Dead.

In 2005, the band announced they were parting ways and around that time Turner got a tape with Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska on it. Although it wasn’t exactly a ‘lightswitch’ moment as has been perpetuated in other circles, it certainly helped to mark a new direction.

“My understanding of modern rock and roll was pretty lopsided, and when I was touring with hardcore bands, you can’t

really get on the tour bus and listen to more hardcore music - it would drive you out of your mind.

“So I started to investigate the corners and edges of genres like folk music and country and getting into stuff like Springsteen, and Dylan and Neil Young.”

A broadening in his approach to creating music was underway.

In the studio and during live performances, Turner is accompanied by his backing band, The Sleeping Souls, which consists of Ben Lloyd (guitar, mandolin), Tarrant Anderson (bass), Matt Nasir (piano) and Nigel Powell (drums).

As to Positive Songs for Negative People, he knew going into it that it was time to inject some invigorating new elements.

“I wanted to try and make a record that had that young, exciting feel, full of piss and vinegar. This also tied in with the fact that to date I don’t feel like I’ve made an album that captures the live experience of seeing me and the Sleeping Souls do what we do best. So I had it in my head to make a record quickly, having worked on the songs for a long time beforehand in a live setting.”

The key lay with producer Butch Walker, whose name appears on the production credits of albums by artists as diverse as Katy Perry, Hot Hot Heat, Pink and Fall Out Boy.

“The Souls and I flew to Nashville with a suite of very well-rehearsed and road-tested songs, and smashed out the album in nine days,” says Turner. “Pretty much all of it is live, and I’m proud to say that with one exception every vocal take on the record is unedited as well. The end result is everything I wanted it to be.

“I think that a lot of bands get kind of comfortable, kind of flabby shall we say around that number of records coming out,” he said.

“So I feel like this is a borderline ‘live’ record.

“In some ways I feel like this record is my definitive statement, a summation of the first five records,” he said.

Meanwhile, Turner is utterly grateful for the path he’s on in life.

He remembers a past job where he tried to sell phones over the phone, which he describes as, “A uniquely thankless task.”

It was the last full-time job he held before embarking as a musician on a full-time basis.

“I’m very fortunate to do what I do. I essentially get to do my passion, my hobby,” he said. “For a lot of bands, life on the road is kind of like a holiday from the norm. There is another life that they are returning to.

“But this is my normal existence,” he said of the cycle of recording and spending so much time crisscrossing the globe to share his music. “This is my day-to-day. Being on the road is my normality.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Calgary’s Hi-Strung Downers perform at Bo’s Feb. 27th

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The Hi-Strung Downers have risen to be one of Calgary’s strongest rockabilly bands. They play at Bo’s on Feb. 27th.

A rock and roll four-piece, the band wields strong rockabilly, early rock and roll and punk rock influences. Made up of members from some of southern Alberta’s veteran groups (including The Black Coffee Cowboys, The Surefires, The Southern Twisters and The Ruminants), The Hi-Strung Downers are writing the next musical chapter of Western Canadian rock and roots.

The Hi-Strung Downers consist of Earl Garnet, Joe Love, Greasy Greg and Terry Starchuck.

From the get-go, there is no question these guys have had a terrific time both in producing and performing their music.

“You’ve got to sell it to yourself before you can sell it to the crowd,” explained Garnet with a laugh during a recent chat.

“It’s about four years ago that Joe Love and I decided to form this band, and we had kind of a direct idea about how we wanted to do this,” he explained, adding that the guys had played in a number of rockabilly

bands over the years.

With the formation of the Hi-Strung Downers, it was time to venture into new territory beyond traditional rockabilly sensibilities.

“I wanted something a little more rock and roll with a little bit more freedom to not be sticking within the confines of traditional rockabilly. So we’ve really pushed that and I think our record reflects that as well.”

Meanwhile, their disc Here She Lies - kicks off with an unstoppable energy and really doesn’t let go - sheer entertainment from start to finish with all kinds of influences popping up as

the project briskly moves along. Influences include Eddie Cochran, Starday Records, Roy Kay Trio, Ronnie Hayward, Grady Martin, Charlie Feathers and Jail Houses.

Here She Lies was produced by Brent Cooper of the Ramblin Ambassadors, whose extensive knowledge of rock history, guitar tones and techniques makes its way throughout the recording. As much as the storytelling is upfront and honest, so is the playing and sound quality.

guitar-wise and for arrangements that I hadn’t even thought of.

“Cam was also just awesome - he had lots of good ideas as well. Without those two guys, the record wouldn’t have been nearly as good as it is.”

For the Hi-Strung Downers, everyone has creative input. Each of the guys are songwriters in their own right, but when they get together and merge their creative energies the tunes are lifted to even higher levels of expression and quality.

“Most of the time someone will bring in a song and then by the time the rest of the band provides their input, the song can really change. However, it still will have the original lyrics for

the most part.” Other times, it’s a collaboration from the start. Whichever way the song ideas are sparked, the band members each inject their own style into a given project which in turn contributes to the band’s unique and increasingly popular sound.

Meanwhile, the guys are gearing up to lay down tracks for their next project next month.

“We don’t want to record the same record - which was like a ‘break-up’ record,” said Garnet, adding the lyrics will reflect that and of course the same irresistibly catchy grooving foundation will still be there.

The simplest fitness rule there is Have you ever noticed the people that do the same things over and over in the gym, or class or in sports and never seem to advance or change or grow or improve?

Have you ever experienced starting a new fitness routine that works for a little while and then stops working?

Have you ever wondered why that was? Here’s the thing, the human body is a stimulus response device.

That’s it. It only responds to something making it respond. Let me explain it a few different ways.

Each fall when it is cold for the first time, (say +5°C) we all think it’s freezing out and we grab our jackets and turn the heat up. But what about now? In the middle of February, if it’s +5°C, we all think it’s spring and could walk around in a t-shirt. That is because our bodies have adapted to colder weather.

It’s no different in fitness. If you decide you want to drop 20 or 30 or 40 lbs and you start walking for 20 minutes after supper each night, at first you will start to change.

But after a few weeks, you will stop changing. This is because the body no longer needs to adapt to the stimulus of walking for 20 minutes once a day. If, however, you start to walk for 30 minutes, then 40 minutes or you start to add hills, or stairs, or you walk faster, or you jog or add a backpack with weight in it, then your body will continue to adapt. The point is, that you have to make it more challenging each week or month so that your body will continue to see the need to improve.

When I start coaching somebody to run a marathon or a triathlon, we start out slowly, with short runs and lots of resting. As the weeks

McDERMOTT go by they start to run longer and faster and require less rest periods. This is called periodization, and it lets the body adapt over time.

It is the same in fitness; you want to start out with weights you can manage, and then start to increase them or change your speed or time you are holding on to the weights, so that your body must adjust.

Boot camp workouts are famous for never being the same twice. That is now widely known as ‘muscle confusion’ technique, and basically it just means changing the stimulus so

that your body has to adapt.

I like to remember it this way - your body becomes what you teach it to be, by the things that you do every day. You can teach your body to be good at endurance, power, speed, agility, balance, or all sorts of things.

That reminds me of another good point - people say they have terrible balance, but that simply isn’t true.

Most adults are just out of practice, because we stop

playing when we grow older.

We sit at work, we sit on the couch, we sit in our vehicles, we sit at the dinner table, and that’s all we ever do.

So the body becomes good at sitting. Hamstrings grow shorter, backs get tight, abs get weak, and all sorts of things become a problem except sitting.

Have you ever watched a young child learn to walk?

Nobody is born with good balance. It is a skill that

we learn. Have you ever watched a 10-year-old child in a playground? They are constantly testing their balance and challenging their skills. As adults we have forgotten to do that, and we really need to bring it back.

I encourage your fitness to be like play time; have fun, challenge your body to adapt, and watch what happens.

Response to drinking mothers and brain-injured children I recently reported that in the U.S. every year 40,000 children are born suffering with fetal alcoholic syndrome disease (FASD).

In Canada, there are 300,000 living with this problem. I asked, “Why doesn’t this human tragedy get as much attention as drunk driving?�

And “Should some of the women involved be sterilized?�

I’ve received a ton of responses.

SR writes, “I believe the Mothers against Drunk Driving lobby gets more attention because the media provides many dollars of free air time.�

R0 responds, “Dr. you are so-o-o-o-o right. Women who drink during pregnancy need to be sterilized.

NB wrote, “Your column should be made mandatory in every bar, liquor/beer store, transit vehicle, doctor’s office and pharmacy.

It should also be taught every year from Grade 6 up.�

From MG, “There are many hard-truths about FASD that some people seem unable to face, and I appreciate you have spoken up about this terrible and preventable condition that is thrust upon the most vulnerable of our species. A school bus driver reported that a FASD child disrupted his entire bus. “I would tell him to sit down and he would kick and spit at me. I do not agree that these challenged children

Some readers said I should spend some time on a First Nations reserve to see the extent of the problem. Actually I’ve recently been to one and will soon report on their other health problems, particularly Type 2 diabetes.

Another couple who adopted two children later discovered they both had FASD. They reported that, “The short version of our life is that it is moments of pure hell. But we love them. We have 10 grandkids and we suspect six

are affected with FASD.�

additional FASD children considering the social chaos that results.

The FASD problem will continue to be swept under the rug. But I hope my column will alert everyone to the potential dangers of alcohol during pregnancy.

PBR circuit kicked off season in City last weekend

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Rebel Energy Services Red Deer Professional Bull Riding (PBR) has been a lucrative event for Garrett Green.

The Meeting Creek, Alberta cowboy took home the Red Deer event’s top prize for the second year in a row, last Saturday, winning both the short round and the aggregate with a combined score of 167 points over two rides to bring home two out of three buckles at the event and pick up a $3,447 pay day.

“Winning last year’s and rolling on.

Maybe I can go again next year,” laughed Green after being presented with his buckles.

Oddly enough, Green not only gave the crowd of around 4,000 people at the Centrium an encore performance of last year’s victory, he did it with nearly the same score in the short go and aboard the same bull to boot.

“They marked me better (this year). Last year I was 86 and this year I was 87 but I thought last year he bucked harder, so I don’t know. I’m not a judge,” Green said of Skori Bucking Bulls’ Minion Stewart, who he rode in the short go both years.

The Red Deer PBR is the first event of the season on PBR Canada’s Touring Pro Division and featured 27 of the tour’s best cowboys, all competing to get a chunk of the prize money and an early start on the season standings, something Green said can be a huge advantage, provided he keeps rolling.

“It’s good to get a kick off, but then you’ve got to keep it up. You’ve got to keep getting those cheques all year long to make the finals,” said Green, who finished just shy of qualifying for the Canadian Finals Rodeo last year.

“I missed out on the CFR last year. I was pretty choked about that. It wasn’t good.

My wrist was giving me some problems but it’s feeling good this year and I’m hoping that I can go and get a win,” he said, adding his wrist has since healed up and he’s feeling ready to take another crack at it.

Finishing just behind Green was Devon Mezei, who finished with an aggregate score of 166.5. Scott Schiffner won the long go with an 85.5 point ride aboard Rock Show to claim the third and final buckle available.

In addition to the great professional bull riding, Saturday’s festivities also included the first ever Canadian performance of Bullfighters Only (BFO) freestyle bullfight-

ing, a relatively new competitive circuit that made its debut in Las Vegas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year.

The relatively small Red Deer competition featured three bullfighters from around the country going one-on-one with a 1,200 lb bull. It is scored like any other rough stock event - 100 possible points with 50 coming from the bullfighter and 50 from the bull.

Contestants are scored on their ability to keep the bull engaged and their ability to manoeuvre while the bulls are scored on aggressiveness, agility and their willingness to stay engaged with the fighter.

After everything was said and done, Kris Buffalo of Wetaskwin won the inaugural event outright over his competitors, Houston Gleeson and veteran bullfighter Scott Waye.

Red Deer Vipers face tough test in conference semis

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It has been one of the closest and hardest fought series of the Heritage Junior Hockey League post season to date.

The HJHL North Conference semi-final matchup between the Airdrie Thunder and the Red Deer Vipers has been a wild one to be sure. Four games into the best of seven series and the two powerhouses have split them right down the middle, with the Vipers claiming games one and three in Airdrie and the Thunder taking games two and four in Red Deer.

“It’s been kind of exactly what I expected. It’s been very back and forth. There’s been ups and downs of each game,” said Vipers Head Coach JD Morrical of the first four games in the series.

The two teams have been neck and neck in the North Conference standings all season long. They finished the regular season in a dead tie for points and win percentage, with Airdrie managing to claim the second place spot based solely on goal differential, so it was no surprise that the series turned out to be as close as it is.

“We started out good two of the games, they started out two of the games and that’s been the difference,” Morrical said.

In fact, in every single match-up between the two teams so far this season, the team that scored first has gone on to win the game, so an early lead has proven to be a huge advantage.

The teams, while evenly matched, have very different play styles. Airdrie is a very offensive-minded team with excellent

goaltending. They have both the league’s top scorer in Clay Murray and the top goaltender in Kade Taplin. Meanwhile, Red Deer has an excellent defense. They have the second fewest goals against in the league and the fewest in the conference and their strong defensive play makes it difficult for opposing teams to get the puck into a good scoring position.

“The games that we’ve been successful - it’s been just slowing down their top line. It’s not really a secret recipe. Their top line is very dangerous and when we can control them, we win and when we can’t, we don’t win,” Morrical said.

“We’ve had a lot of success when the series is tied up. We’ve gotten the lead and we’ll be looking to do that again.”

Red Deer has yet to find themselves trailing Airdrie in the series thanks to a 3-2 win in game one in Airdrie that set the tone for the see-saw battle.

“We had a really good start. We were able to get a one-goal lead after the first period and just played our game, played physical and we were very responsible.”

Airdrie picked up their first win of the series in game two, felling the Vipers 7-4 at the Red Deer Arena. The Vipers picked up a 6-4 win in game three on Friday night before the Thunder took game four 4-3 on a late third period goal.

It’s worth noting that neither team has won a game at home yet during the series.

“I hope we can win again in Airdrie. I think we have a very good chance of it. If we do win in Airdrie, we have to mix it up.

RDC teams to be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame The Red Deer College Kings Volleyball teams have an impeccable reputation for continuously being one of the top teams in the nation.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame announced its inductees for 2016 this week, where it was revealed that eight of the recent RDC Kings Volleyball teams will be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

The ‘run of eight’ teams, which won the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) na-

tional title every year from 2000 to 2007, will be the recipients of this prestigious accolade.

“This truly is an honour for everyone who was involved with these exceptional teams, and it’s also an honour that speaks to our legacy and athletic heritage at RDC,” says Diane St-Denis, Red Deer College’s athletic director.

“We are very proud of all of our student athletes, and these particular players represent the pinnacle of how teams can work

together to achieve excellence.”

Changes in government and economy, job security and our fluctuating dollar have made our province vulnerable and scared for the first time in decades.

We have always been able to pull through and continue to be the province of plenty but this time feels more unsettling than before and I am listening to endless amounts of people murmuring about whether they have enough confidence to purchase a home or if it’s a good idea to stay put and renovate.

There are a few simple things you can do to ensure that you are getting the most out of your hard earned dollars. We don’t need to worry about our economy if we are utilizing every possible savings at our disposal to make our dollars stretch as far as they can.

1. Check your fees – all of them. Check your bank records, interest on loans,

How to get a fully loaded mortgage Pam

Finally, not all lenders like all property types or can lend in other provinces. For example, if you currently reside in Alberta but plan to move to an acreage in B.C. then you should make sure you are with a lender who will allow this.

2. Pre-payment privileges – there is a wide spread between the lenders on exactly how much extra you can pay on your mortgage. It can vary from 10% to 20% of

Pre-payment penalties – I have said a thousand times or more that there is no standard in Canada as to how the mortgage lenders are required to calculate the penalty if you break your mortgage contract early. They are required to present their calculation formula to you before funding but even to a mortgage professional these can be darn near impossible to navigate. Do your research and ask a lot of questions to make sure you are not choosing to place your mortgage with a lender at the nasty end of the penalty scale.

4. Collateral mortgages - a collateral mortgage is where the mortgage lender registers a higher amount on the title of the property than you have actually borrowed. This can be useful later if you want to get a home equity line of credit as it saves you some steps in the borrowing process. The downside is that collateral

mortgages are more difficult to switch out at renewal which can leave you stuck with your current lender even if they have a higher interest rate than is available in the market. It also allows your bank to tie in other borrowing such as credit cards and vehicles to the mortgage which may then have to be paid out when you sell leaving you less money to put down on your next home.

5. Easy to use - there is something pretty nice about making extra payments or checking your mortgage balance on a Saturday morning while sipping coffee in your PJ’s. Find out ahead of time what type of online mortgage management you can do if you are part of the new digital world and value such things.

Think of your mortgage as a hamburger.

The good things above are the toppings you want like cheese and bacon. The negative can be the things you hate like mustard or mushrooms. Your mortgage can be great or it can be yucky but it’s up to you to order it the way you’d like. Until next time!
