Penticton proudly welcomes you to the 2016 B.C. Winter Games, February 25-28, 2016.

The very first BC Games were hosted here in Penticton in 1978.

We are really excited about having the athletes, coaches, officials and parents returning to our beautiful community.

As a participant in these games you have taken a big step in your athletic and personal development. The many hours of training and the dedication you have shown to your sport, is a significant milestone in the future you choose to take. These games are being presented to help you achieve your personal goals, and to show yourself proudly to family, friends and your home community.

Penticton is a reknown for hosting various athletic events either at the regional, provincial or international levels because of our enthusiastic community members and first class sporting facilities. We have a proud

The many volunteers have been anxiously preparing for your arrival, and making all of the arrangements to host the sports you will be participating in. We hope you will find the events both challenging and exciting, and you will find many opportunities to have fun.

The Opening Ceremony will kick off the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games on Thursday, Feb. 25 — featuring a jam-packed evening of entertainment and sports inspiration.

Olympian and BC Games alumna Kristi Richards, who grew up in Summerland, will share her experience of how competition in the BC Winter Games was a milestone in her athletic career, which included competing in the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino and 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver..

“Kristi’s story is an excellent example of the significance of the BC Games. These multi-sport events are incredible opportunities for athletes to compete at a high level early in their athletic careers, inspiring them to move on to even higher levels,” said Bill Bidlake, President of the 2016 BC Winter Games. “We would love for the SOEC stands to be packed with people as competitors mark the

beginning of the Penticton 2016 BC Winter Games.”

The ceremony starts at 7 p.m. and features Global BC sports reporter Shanel Pratap, who will MC the event. The Beamer Wigley Band will warm up the crowd at 6:30 p.m. and Gypsy and the Rose join the Queens Park Elementary School Choir in the ceremony to sing the Games song, Do You Believe. Also performing are Okanagan Dance Studio and Balance School of Arts.

Tickets are free, and will be available to the public starting on Feb. 15. Drop by the Valley First Box Office at the SOEC or order online at www.valleyfirsttix.com (service fees apply to online orders).

Award-winning hip hop artist Kasp will MC the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. He will be joined by Cosmic Brew, Black Widow Rope Spinners, Nikita Afonso and Rylan Wheeler. This event is also free, no ticket required.

Kristi Richards’ path to the Olympics was paved by competing in the BC Winter Games.

“It was that little spark of what’s to come,” said Richards, who will the keynote speaker at the BC Winter Games opening ceremony in Penticton, Feb. 25. “The real spirit of the Games and that kind of an event — it’s an energy unlike anything else. It’s absolutely magical, uplifting and energizing.”

Richards, a two-time Olympian, 2007 world champion and two-time national moguls champ said going to the BC Games, the opening ceremony and everything that surrounds it is what makes the experience so special. The Summerland native and Apex Freestyle Club grad said competing prepares athletes for future international competitions.

Athletes get that first sense of media attention, of having a bigger event around their sport. ” Richards, 34, encourages the athletes to open themselves up to an experience without expectations.

“Go in with that willingness to experience the magic,” said Richards. “It is not only special for the athletes, but like we saw in 2010 for the Vancouver Olympics, it’s really special for the community. It’s a time to get together and support something that is all positive.”

Another athlete who competed in the BC Winter Games and advanced to the Olympic stage is Kelowna’s Kelsey Serwa. She won a silver medal at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The 26-year-old remembers the long bus ride from the Okanagan to Williams Lake in 2002 and receiving her accreditation (which she still has in a collection of keepsakes).

“Too often we find ourselves trying to figure out the perfect recipe for building the next generation of successful athletes, losing sight of the true purpose of sport — to have fun, create meaningful relationships, and to build long-lasting skills including teamwork, perseverance, goal-setting, living a healthy lifestyle and more,” said Serwa.
