Fourth-grader Elisabeth Foss holds dreams of twirling ribbons in the Olympics.

The rhythmic gymnast is on that path with her first big foray into major competition when she and three of her teammates at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Club of Victoria compete at the BC Games in Penticton.

“I’m really proud of Elisabeth for her commitment and her willingness to get out there and compete as a first-year competitive gymnast. That takes a lot of guts,” said coach Kristy Wilson. “It’s really great that she’s willing to put herself out there. It says a lot about her personality.”

It’s a sport in development, says Wilson, who has coached Elisabeth for 18 months, and Vancouver Island is one of the regions

underdeveloped while Vancouver, for example, is a stronghold.

It limits their ability to find the athlete in the right competitive stream, age, commitment and ability.

Elisabeth, who is also “focused and hardworking,” met all the criteria.

“This is her first year doing competition. It’s very much going to be a growth opportunity for her to learn from,” says Wilson. “She’s really stepped it up this year.

Last year she was more in a performance program and this year she put up her hand and said she wanted to do more and take on more of a challenge.

So we moved her into the competitive team.

She’s shown huge growth in the last couple of months.”

at times combined with apparatus such as hoops, a ball, clubs or ribbons (Elisabeth’s favourite).

The mix of dance and gymnastics drew her mom Elena to the sport and she enrolled Elisabeth when her daughter was in Kindergarten. A few years later, Elisabeth remains enamoured with the sport, practicing several times a week with her club plus a little homework on the side.

“It’s fun, you can go upside down,” she says. The youngster has no difficulty picking up a foot until her leg aligns with her face for a photo, with a grin.

Then she slides into the splits – with ease.

Elisabeth is currently mastering two individual routines and a group ball routine with three Greater Victoria peers – Lily Williams, Katie Evans and Micaela Brennan.

“We’re hoping in particular that our group will do well this year,” Wilson said.

Elisabeth loves the challenge of her freestyle routine, featuring splits, side holds, turns and leaps.

“It’s fast and hard to keep up with the timing and I like that,” she says.

Her rope routine may be an exercise in competition readiness, and not appear at the BC Games.

“It’s a difficult sport, it requires a lot of co-ordination … you have to do these difficult body movements and you have to then do them while you’re moving the apparatus,” says Wilson “We want to put forward her strongest.”

It will also be the girl’s first foray away from home. Elisabeth holds no fears of heading out on her inaugural overnighter and her first major competition.

“It’s my first big thing,” Elisabeth says. Naturally, with Olympic dreams in mind, she wants a medal.

“We keep our expectations focussed on personal bests,” says Wilson, “learning from the experience, watching and taking it all in.”

Jan Mears plans to mobilize the community and renovate a municipally owned home to welcome Syrian refugee families.

Spurred by a presentation to Oak Bay council

by Cairine Green, Mears took the task to the next level, creating a framework to take to council in March. Armed with a report – the proposed project’s first donation, offered gratis by Pillar to Post Home Inspection – she’ll have a better idea of what would be required to bring the home up to snuff.

“A community group is coming together to raise the funds and source the donated services and materials necessary,” Mears said. “We wanted to see if we can make it safe, liveable and affordable.”

With no dream kitchen or magazine landscaping in mind, she envisions simple and clean and able to get Syrian refugee families integrated into Oak Bay. “This idea simply needed community momentum and I am grateful for the support of others,” said Green. “We will take it one step at a time and hope that something comes of it all. The potential is exciting and positive and is such an opportunity for community-building.”

Mears already touched base with Habitat for Humanity and HeroWork (which recently renovated a Threshold Housing Society property adjacent to Oak Bay).

A new geography course at the University of Victoria tests students’ kite-flying skills to monitor the state of beaches across Greater Victoria.

Fourth-year undergraduate students from UVic’s Advanced Studies in Geomorphology – the study of the earth’s physical features and their relation to its geological structures – started a new project using kites and balloons with cameras to survey Cadboro Bay beach on a recent rainy Monday afternoon.

Co-developed by instructor and PhD candidate Michael Grilliot and geography professor Ian Walker, the course combines low-altitude aerial photography with Lidar – a form of radar that uses lasers to measure distance – to construct virtual, 3D maps of coastal systems.

“The Lidar creates 3D surfaces from a bunch of points and with the cameras, we can use the overlap from those photos to create a 3D structure,” Grilliot said.

Over the next three months, students will conduct group projects, monitoring the state of beaches all over Vancouver Island using techniques learned from the course.

“The groups are all focusing on different areas,” Grilliot said.

“One of the groups is focusing on the Dallas Road bluffs, so they’re looking at historical aerial photography to determine where the shoreline is and where it’s been. They’re going to collect their own data and see if they can use these technologies to detect change and erosion on the beach.”

The course gives students hands-on experience working with these technologies, allow-

ing them to develop valuable skills that they can carry into the workforce.

“Our goal is to provide the students with the ability to use these technologies,” Grilliot said. “That way they can take that knowledge with them to either grad school or consulting agencies or government agencies, and that will give them a foot in the door.”

The long-term plan for the course is for future students to continue monitoring the state of local beaches after former students graduate, eventually building up many years of valuable geographical data that can be shared with local municipalities and other groups.

“We’re just giving students a great opportunity to use these technologies, even in the rain,” Grilliot said. “We’re geography students, so we can handle it.” jacob.zinn@saanichnews.com

Pink Shirt Day grows from simple beginnings You have to wonder if, back in 2007, while David Shepherd and Travis Price were buying a stack of 50 pink shirts, they could have imagined that their bullying protest would spread around the world.

Probably not. They were just trying to support a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. But today (Feb. 24), we celebrate Pink Shirt Day (or Anti-bullying Day, if you prefer) for the ninth year. And it’s five years since the United Nations took a stand and proclaimed May 4 International Anti Bullying Day. That’s a pretty good return for the purchase of a stack of cheap T-shirts.

Why do people, especially kids, bully others? There are so many reasons that it would never be possible to find one answer that would fit all situations. Where commonality exists, however, is with their victims. Bullies have a knack for finding the kids unlikely to retaliate. And they choose them because the victim is different – skin colour, nationality, size, hair colour, shape of the nose, you name it – even the colour of a shirt.

Anyone who has been bullied knows the old adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me,” is far from the truth. Name-calling and other, more aggressive, forms of bullying do leave marks, marks that affect the victim for years to come.

It’s a lot to ask from some pink shirts, but the annual reminder about the problem of bullying offers hope that our cultures might finally be starting to grow up.

Let’s hope the word continues to spread.

Bullying will likely never be wiped out completely, but we can hope to reduce its hold on society, as has been done with the once socially acceptable drinking and driving.

YOUR VIEW Team suspension the wrong call The Oak Bay school administrators decided to cancel their junior boys’ basketball team’s season due to a couple or more’s stupidity.

I would like to take this opportunity to say this decision was excessive and I also for one, do not commend their action.

Suspension of the perpetuators themselves would be more appropriate. Counselling or lecture of the remaining team

members would be sufficient to bring home to them that being a bystander to bullying is not right.

I somehow doubt whether any good at all will come of this.

Certainly due to the team members playing the bystander role they received direct and real consequences.

But one has to ask what far-reaching ramifications might occur if future references are considered. Collegiate scholarships? Some of these players are extremely good, evi-

denced by the team’s stellar season leading into the playoffs.

Regarding the remaining team members’ future, I have to say this action of cancelling the team’s season went too far.

Deeply offended and wearing bright colours Like most safetyminded folks, I found myself agreeing with William Rauschning’s “Pedestrians: Please, let yourself be seen.”

Yes, pedestrians should avoid wearing all black. Wearing a bright-coloured scarf seems like sound advice. Then I stumbled upon the words “unlady-like lingo” and then the jawdroppingly offensive

Wow, I didn’t realize women have achieved equality. How can this be when just this week Victoria Kaspi becomes the first woman to win Canada’s top science prize?

Not to mention the study from California Polytechnic University and North Carolina State University that suggests women may be more competent at writing computer code, but their ideas are rejected more often when gender is clear.

No need to even mention the wage gap.

Imagine if Mr. Rauschning had nearly run over a man dressed in black. Would he have described the man’s language as “ungentlemanly-like” and an “unfortunate byproduct of men’s equality?”

Let’s leave the sexism out of what is good advice. Any pedestrian, regardless of gender, is hard to see when dressed in black. And rude language is rude language.

Recent letters to the editor concerning Oak Bay’s finances seem to warrant our attention.

Each year the municipality includes a budget summary with our property tax notice. The magnitude of the budget increase is clear and the incremental tax burden for an average residence is highlighted. Viewed in isolation the impact generally looks modest; across time the impact is less benign.

Between 2008 and 2014 the municipal share of property taxes increased from $16.5 to $21.3 million; this represents a compound annual growth rate of 4.4 per cent.

This growth rate is more than double the annual growth rate for taxes collected by the municipality on behalf of others (e.g., schools, CRD); it is two to four times greater than the annual percentage change in Victoria’s consumer price index as calculated by Statistics Canada; and, it is about 1.7 times greater than the annual compound growth in Oak Bay households’ median after-tax income as reflected in available census data.

At the 4.4 per cent growth rate, which does not reflect accelerated budget growth in 2015 and possibly 2016, taxes collected by the municipality will double in about 16 years.

Although the impact will not be uniform across households it is fair to suggest that a 50-year old could experience a doubling of property taxes by retirement and a further doubling by the time he or she is 80. I expect my 2016 property tax notice will firmly establish this trajectory for my property. And this is before we add the cost of sewage treatment.

We live in an incredibly small community (10 km²). Crime rates are amongst the lowest in Canada, there is no developable land to speak of and our population is, based on estimates by BC Stats, at a 15-year low.

No evident community characteristic suggests growth except the municipal budget. Perhaps concern about the budget trend is ill-founded or maybe the trend is unavoidable. Conversely, maybe the budget growth rate needs to be halved to better align with inflation trends, income growth etc. In any event, more engagement around municipal spending seems necessary.

Balancing act Finding time for all that’s important, with a little help from your friends.

Jennifer Blyth It’s a common expression: I don’t know how she does it. To find out, we thought we’d go to the source.

For DFH realtor and Oak Bay resident Cassie Kangas, “it’s all about being super-organized,” she says. “That is the only way I can make it work.”

As a realtor, a regular 9 to 5 day is virtually impossible, so organization married with a little flexibility goes a long way. That means making lists, writing notes (“Yes, I am old school with a Filofax,” Kangas says) and having as much time scheduled as possible, while being flexible if things need to change.

“A big part of what I try to do is schedule things so that there is always time in the day if unexpected things crop up...If that time does not get filled I either have time for myself or to take on a new task,” says Kangas, who also gives back through various community committees and fundraisers. “Depending on the event or committee I take a bigger or smaller role. I don’t want to over-commit and not be able to fulfill my duties,” she says.

Zero to one in two years and plans for more public art Artist, teacher, mentor leads Oak Bay’s arts legacy Long before it was official, Barbara Adams advocated for the arts, instilling the value in the minds of middle-schoolers at Monterey. As a teacher there, she crafted an art room and created an artist-in-the-school program that became self-funded and a money-maker for the art department after its first year. When she

retired, she left the art department with $25,000 in the bank.

This year, Oak Bay’s inaugural arts laureate celebrates her third official year in the role with exponential growth in the community’s art offerings.

Mayor Nils Jensen appointed Adams in fall 2013. Adams got going right out of the gate, adding seven pieces of art to the community in 2014 – three public pianos and four pieces of art on loan by artists spread throughout the com-

Those first pianos, painted by well-known local artists, garnered hundreds of positive comments. They were however problematic for some residents bothered by late night or constant playing, at times poorly, in a residential setting.

All things taken into consideration, she placed four in the community in 2015 with nary a negative repercussion.

The four works blossomed into sculptures dotting the landscape in both Estevan and Oak Bay villages this summer and the sculpture titled Salish Sea by Coast Salish artist Chris Paul never moved after its 2014 instalment. It remains, and

will remain, in place at the Oak Bay Marina as Oak Bay’s first municipally owned work of fine art.

A recent donation from the adjacent Oak Bay Marine Group kicks off her original vision of 20-something art sites in the community, six featuring “art spaces” – starting with the Salish Sea site – that include visual art, seating and an empty space for potential of performance.

How long have you lived (or worked) in Oak Bay? I have been with the OBEP for four and a half years.

What is the one thing you haven’t done that you’d love to do?

Where do I start? I think the thing at the top of my list today is to take a cruise around South America, making sure I see Machu Picchu, all four regions of Chile, go around the Horn and see Iguazu Falls. I have always been intrigued by South America, but haven’t had much chance to travel there and we’ve never cruised. Lots of firsts.

we change, by Charles Duhigg. I was once told that it takes people an average of 15 tries to quit smoking and I’ve tried to make regular exercise part my life for years – unsuccessfully. I’m hoping for some insight into how we/I can be more successful in our attempts to change.

The person living or dead you’d like to have dinner with?

I tried to think of someone people would know and relate to, but quite honestly, the right answer for me is the next stranger or friend I meet. I have learned so much from everyone that I have met during my life – the next book I might read, the next place I might add to my bucket list or a life lesson that might provide a key to a challenge I am wrestling with. Any interaction is always an adventure and a learning experience, and add good food … it doesn’t get any better than that.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Bullies, whether they are in cars and trying to hog the road or they are people just being mean to someone. Life is so short and being mean or being a bully is hurtful, life-threatening, a huge waste of everyone’s life and so unnecessary.

What is one lesson from someone you admire that affects you still today?

There are so many, but probably the overarching one is the best definition of leadership I’ve heard: “Leadership is not about position; it is about actions.” I don’t think there is a day that I don’t think about that definition and find a way to apply it.

If you didn’t do what you do for a living what would you be?

A construction project manager. I was born at a time where it was almost inconceivable for a woman to be in the construction business, but I am not able to pass by a construction site without stopping and wondering why, what and how? Who knows? I didn’t think I’d ever be involved in emergency management, another passion, and here I am.

What does your ideal day in Oak Bay look like?

Wandering along Oak Bay Avenue, enjoying the sun, wandering into the shops, stopping for a coffee or a bite, stopping to chat with people I’ve met over the last four years, doing some business, some errands and just chilling.

Oak Bay is one of the few places I know where you can do all of that, all in a couple of blocks.

Right plant, right place: A tiny tour of February’s flowers more, they still enjoy reading the Cultivated column. Thankful for their kind words, I thought I’d take those readers on a tiny tour of south Oak Bay, a plant tour that you might take in your imagination, by foot, or even by car (though a few short steps will add to your delight). We’ll head out to look at flowers in February (lucky us!) and I’ll try to explain as we go why these plants are thriving.

Let’s start at Windsor Park, Christin Geall on the west side Cultivated of the pavilion where a fabulous patch of hellebores are in full bloom.

Hellebores are typically a shade perennial, so why are these huge plummy clumps so healthy?

After a call to Oak Bay Parks horticulturalist Helen Strohschein, I learned that their leaves were trimmed back in January, which means the plant can put its energy into heavy blooms (and you can better see them in all their glory). Secondly, the plants are fed with compost and leaf mulch every year.

As for all that summer light? It’s hot afternoon sun, yes, but this variety is Helleborus x ballardiae ‘HGC Pink Frost,’ a hybrid of H. lividus and the Christmas rose, H. Niger. The first parent is native to Majorca, a dry island in the Mediterranean.

Moving on to the northeast corner of the park, in the new scented garden, a small but interesting shrub is in now bloom. Known as buttercup witch hazel or winter hazel (Corylopsis pauciflora), the plant provides winter interest in semi-shaded locations and will grow to approximately 5x8 ft. Blooming in pale yellow on bare twigs, Corylopsis makes a fine choice for those who find the yellow of Forsythia too glaring or common.

Directly across Windsor Road, on the south side of W & J Wilson, look towards the clipped rosemary hedge, currently blooming blue (just 10 feet inland from Newport). If you’ve tried growing rosemary at home and lost it to cold or damp, note that this rosemary (the robust classic Rosmarinus officionalis) is protected from the

Now you’ll have to head south, onto the south block of the twoblock-long Linkleas Avenue which is just greening up for spring. This block remains one of the few ‘wild’ lanes in south Oak Bay where native vegetation thrives on the boulevard (though development and invasive plants are threatening that). In the understory, the spring green leaves and drooping white flowers of our native Indian Plum Oemlaria cerasiformis, are out.

Their darling upright leaves are so optimistic they make my heart break a little on a grey winter’s day. Indian plum loves seepage areas, so if you’d like a bird-friendly plant, or need a quick-growing deciduous screen in a damp corner of the garden, try it. (I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the flowers aren’t particularly pleasantsmelling, so don’t snip them for the vase).

That was quick: four plants and I’ve run out of space! I might make ‘plant tours’ a regular feature of the column as so often I walk my dog and find botanical wonders worth sharing.
