Owner Lisa Kulcheski says that the idea for Lillian Wild came to her after years of experience in the bridal industry showed her a gap in the market.

“I’d been thinking about opening a business for a while and then I was talking with a friend on my birthday and she said, ‘go for it.’ That was in June and then by January the shop was open. I’ve always been in the wedding industry—I did make-up for weddings for 15 years—and I saw there’s not much here for wedding dress stores.”

Lillian Wild offers highly personalized service, with each bride having the whole store to herself for the duration of her appointment. The shop is open by appointment seven days a week and on evenings, giving brides lots of flexibility. And with appointments lasting from 90 minutes to two hours, brides have ample space and time to try on anything that catches their eyes.

“We always offer oneon-one service. And nobody else takes evening appointments.”

But dresses are just the beginning for Lillian Wild.

Kulcheski’s shop is also home to hair accessories, jewellery and make-up, so brides can fashion the perfect ensemble look.

For Kulcheski, the dresses and the make-up are her way of making a living out of what she loves.

“My favourite part of running Lillian Wild is that

moment when the bride finds The Dress. The chills, the tears, the glow. Plus, I love coming to work every day. I get to play dressup every day and live vicariously through every

bride, so I don’t have to bug my husband to get married again.”

Kulcheski has big plans for Lillian Wild and she hopes that brides all over North America will love what she has to offer.

“We’re going to wholesale my brand. My plan is to be in other stores within a year. We’re also going to The Bridal Market—a large bridal fair in New York—in October and we’re planning to expand our line.”

Graziano says that there’s no shortage of colours and styles for girls to try. Prom dresses come in every colour from light mint to deep red. And although finding the right colour and style can be a lot of fun, finding a dress that fits— and tailoring it to be just right—can be a struggle.

“Most dresses are cut to fit girls who are at least six foot two, because you can’t add length. So there’s usually hemming involved, plus some modification like straps or taking it in at the bust—little perfection details to make the exact fit.”

Getting the modifications just right, she notes, can take up to six weeks—and as grad season approaches, most tailors and seamstresses start taking on more and more work.

“The closer you get to grad, the longer the turnaround will be. (After buying the dress) you should give at least four to six weeks for alterations.”

Graziano says that Bliss Bridal sells four of each kind of dress off the rack, with special ordering options available for unique colours and sizes. She says that different designers sell

out at different rates and families should stay up to date on inventory levels to know how much time they have to think about a dress purchase.

“We use a system that lets us check live inventory all over North America. I can give real-time information to a girl standing in a dress so she can make an educated decision in that moment.

‘There’s six left? I can think about it. There’s one left? I need to make a decision.’”

She also notes that prices are higher this year, which is something families will need to plan for well in advance. “(A grad dress typically costs) between $450 and $750. The designers that we carry are based in the United States. The way our dollar is now, it’s heavily affecting retail prices. When the Canadian dollar gets closer to par, the prices drop a bit.”

Her advice for families who are looking for grad dresses? Get started now.

“If you start looking now, you have about 4 months to find something. That’s enough time to get the dress and have alterations done, if the style hasn’t been sold out.”

Kelowna Wedding Planner Encourages Couples to

Planning a wedding is a challenging endeavor where nearly anything

could go wrong at any time, says Laura Lebbon—and she knows from firsthand experience the amount of work involved in ensuring it goes according to plan.

After planning her own wedding in southern France in 2010, Lebbon decided to open a wedding planning business in the Okanagan to help engaged couples plot their course from the aisle to the reception hall.

And with over five years of experience in planning local and destination weddings, she’s seen it all.

“Every wedding is completely different, but the biggest challenge is making sure you have plenty of time to plan your wedding. Things get booked up exceptionally quickly in Kelowna. A lot of places get booked for summer weekends over a year in advance.

The next big challenge is accommodations—giving your guests enough notice

that they can find hotel rooms. The standard time to send invites is three months before the wedding, but I suggest six months so that guests have enough time to find accommodations.”

Lebbon notes that destination weddings bring a unique set of logistical challenges, with nearly all guests coming from out of town.

“Coming from out of town, you’ll have trouble finding cost-effective vendors. Often you’ll see only the higher-end vendors on Google, which is why having someone on the ground is useful. That’s often why I get hired. Also, coming from out of town, you’ll need to make sure you have a few weekends where the bride can come and have her hair done, where the couple can try the cake…you need a weekend to test everything.”

But for those having their weddings locally, the

“It’s very challenging to find a wedding venue in Kelowna. Until last year, CedarCreek’s waiting list was 18 months. That’s not standard everywhere, but for most places, you’re

Lebbon notes that the kind of venue that couples choose will impact how easily they can plan their wedding, with wineries and hotels offering easier wedding planning than private residences.

“If you choose a hotel or winery, there’s a team of people there to help you.

planner. You have to bring knives, forks and tables yourself. You have to hire your own bar staff.”

Lebbon says that although weddings are challenging to organize,

couples can plan a successful wedding by taking the right steps early. “(Make sure you have) someone there on the day of. (That’s what I did, because) I didn’t want to

be setting up tables on my wedding day. Do as much research as possible and be aware that there are varying standards and levels of service (at venues and from vendors) being offered.”

Maybe you think you know each other very well. Maybe there are no secrets for you regarding one another and you believe all this will bring you what you need to have a happy life.

All these are important, but the list is incomplete. It is simple. Living as lovers is quite different from a life as husband and wife. As lovers you are not bound in any way. You can leave any time you like and you have the moral freedom to do what you want as an individual, not as a couple.
