“There has always been a unique connection between Grey whales and humans on the Pacific Rim. Tales of friendly encounters with whales are thick in the communities of Ucluelet and Tofino. As 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the Pacific Rim Whale Festival I wanted this poster to celebrate the unique relationship between Grey Whales and the people of the West Coast. I was inspired by the story of “Darling’s Whales”. This painting shows a Grey whale surfacing in magnificent Clayoquot Sound – old growth rainforest covered mountains loom behind the beaches and crashing surf. Beneath the surface we see that the whale is not alone – swimming with a human diver – perhaps a researcher or biologist?

The Evolution of Our Coastal Tradition. Our non-profit society began in 1986, with a group of concerned citizens from our region, who wanted to create awareness about our pristine eco-system, the then endangered Grey Whale population and our coastal traditions. Although the Grey Whales’ numbers have increased, the celebration continues! Our festivities each spring are centered around the migration of these great ocean giants, from the Baja Coast in Mexico to the Chukchi Sea in the Artic. Over 25,000 Pacific Grey Whales swim past our shores each year. 2016 marks our 30th anniversary and we think that is something to celebrate! Parks Canada is happy to be part of the PaciďŹ c Rim Whale Festival! Visitors will notice that there are several large infrastructure projects underway in PaciďŹ c Rim National Park Reserve this spring. These projects address some much needed work, and will make a big dierence in the long term for visitors to the area. However, we also recognize that some of the closures and delays are an inconvenience to our neighbours and visitors. So, we are oering free park entry from now until April 30, 2016 as a way of saying thanks for your patience while we complete the construction work. Where can you visit in the national park reserve? While construction is underway, Long Beach, Incinerator Rock, Schooner Cove, Florencia Bay (via the Willowbrae Trail), and the Rainforest trail remain open to the public. For up-to-date information on road closures and construction delays in PaciďŹ c Rim National Park Reserve, please visit us at: www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/bc/paciďŹ crim/visit/visit5.aspx You can also view photos and regular project updates on our Facebook page: facebook.com/PaciďŹ cRimNPR.

SILVA JOHANSSEN
DAN HARRISON
Raincoast Education Society Dan Harrison is a forest ecologist and the Executive Director of the Raincoast Education Society.
An appropriate caricature of Long Beach Nature Tours guide Silva Johansson could be of a witty cultural and ecological encyclopedia with bounds of energy, a bright rain slicker and a head of curls. And she has her hands in a number of tidepools, if you will.
Dan’s passion for the plants of Pacific coastal rainforests were the focus of much of his undergraduate work that earned him a BSc from the University of Victoria in 2008. Dan was also selected to join a forest ecology research group as a Masters student at the Pacific Forestry Centre (Canadian Forest Service) in Victoria focusing on nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems.
Silva has also made an appearance in living rooms across the county tidepooling for strange and slippery creatures on Long Beach for Canadian Geographic Kids TV. Ask her about her time exploring the B.C. coast aboard the tall ship North Star of Herschel Island.
JENN YAKIMISHYN
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve Jenn Yakimishyn is a marine biologist who calls the west coast home and works at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. She is inspired by coastal marine ecosystems and has a keen interest in the fish communities that inhabit eelgrass meadows and kelp forests. Jenn will be speaking at the Park’s Whaling and Whaling Traditions exhibit as well as at Remote Passages Marine Excursions
He is an avid fisherman, surfer and outdoor enthusiast. Dan will be taking you on a interpretive walk through Schooner Cove and the rainforest trails.

Guest Speakers
Dr. LANCE BARRETT-LENNARD Head -Vancouver Aquarium Cetacean Research program
Lance’s childhood was spent in Australia, the US and Canada. He did a BSc at the University of Guelph and then spent several years working as a lighthouse keeper, where he became fascinated by all things marine. He then went on to do MSc and PhD degrees on various aspects of killer whale biology at the University of British Columbia. He was hired to head up the Vancouver Aquarium’s Cetacean Research Program in 2001. His research focuses on population structure, mating systems, dietary specialization, and cultural transmission in cetaceans. At least nine populations of killer whales inhabit the northeastern Pacific Ocean and avoid inbreeding through a clanbased mating system. Dr. Barrett-Lennard will be a guest on the Seachange panel as well as a presenter following it.

Over 30 years ago, pioneering marine mammal researcher Michael Bigg determined that British Columbia coastal waters are home to distinct fish-eating and mammal-eating killer whale types. Guest Speaker - Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard – Assessing Killer Whale Body Condition using a Remote-Controlled Hexacopter
5 pm – Ucluelet Community Centre, 500 Matterson Dr, Ucluelet (following the Seachange panel)
Resident killer whales have a strong dietary preference for Chinook salmon, and are known to experience higher-than normal mortality during poor salmon years. John Durban, Holly Fearnbach and Dr. Barrett-Lennard have been examining the relationship between Chinook and killer whales in more detail, by assessing how body condition (fat thickness) of killer whales varies with fluctuations in salmon abundance. For the past two years, they have used a small unmanned hexacopter to obtain high quality aerial photos of resident killer whales, which we use to determine the length and shape of the whales very accurately. The talk will describe the method and present photos and videos of killer whales from the air. Admission: By donation/Button b

GUEST SPEAKER Kylee Pawluk, Ocean Acidification – What’s
the Big Deal?
3pm - Remote Passages Marine Excursions, 51 Wharf St, Tofino
Our world is constantly undergoing change due to human impacts. Carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels eventually finds its way into the oceans. Carbon dioxide combines with water to release hydrogen atoms, which are reducing the pH in the oceans. These acidic molecules then affect how many marine organisms grow their skeletons. These changes to animal growth will have effects throughout marine food chains. During this presentation we will go over the chemistry behind ocean acidification, how this change in chemistry will directly affect marine animals, and how this will reverberate up the food chain to impact whales. We will also discuss some of Pacific Rim Whale Festival

Robinson Cook
Arts Society
Robinson Cook is a carver who reflects his west coast home. He works with Vancouver Island wood species and has been very influenced by the Nuu-Chah-Nulth traditions of carving. Like many, Robinson started off with the legendary carver Henry Nola as his first exposure to the west coast carving culture. Over the years he has developed his own style and continues to seek guidance from his current mentors, Qwaya Sam and Gordon Dick. Robinson lives and works on an island in Clayoquot Sound and has been on the west coast for over 25 years.
