The Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee is continuing to meet and is working to identify and address the needs it can be of assistance with.

In the fall, the committee used the start of its fund to build a number of outbuildings for those in the fire zone (some of which will be completed in the spring). We have also continued to collaborate with the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and other organizations offering help within our community.

Spring is coming, and so it is important to us that we are aware of individual and community needs, so we can steer our help towards the biggest needs. As we work to determine the best use of these donated funds, we recognize that spring brings opportunity to move forward, so we are working to move funds into the hands of individuals and families most affected by the fire.

There has been approximately $118,000 donated so far. We will be closing the account as of March 31, 2016 in order to complete the allocation of funds raised. Anything received following that date will be forwarded to the Kettle River Lions Club for dispersal.

Part two of a two-part series The West Boundary Food and Resources Society welcomed local forest expert Fred Marshall to its Jan. 30 meeting at the Rock Creek Health Centre to provide members with an overview of the Boundary timber supply area and its importance as not only an economic driver, but also a vital player in the area’s ecosystem.

“I am a forester, so lumber is good,” Marshall said, “but it’s important to recognize that our forests are not only a source of timber but are also home to many creatures, significant recreational areas and many other things.”

Marshall identified the Boundary’s primary economic drivers as forestry, tourism, agriculture (including cattle and ornamental nurseries such as Hansinger’s and Stewart Brothers), mining and government services. He noted the fact that, while there are nurseries that employ hundreds of people to produce plants and flowers, not nearly the same attention is paid to food production, which, Marshall suggested, may change if the price of food continues to climb.

Marshall went on to outline the distribution of timber harvesting rights, noting that Weyerhauser and Interfor own the rights to 56 per cent of the allowable annual cut (ACC) in the Boundary.

He also described how the West Boundary (Midway/ Greenwwod) community forest works, by the hiring of independent contractors to plan the layout of the logging area

Boundary-based forestry expert Fred Marshall joined members of the Food and Resources Society on Jan. 30 to talk about forestrelated matters and other subjects.

and harvest the timber, which is subsequently sold to mills such as Vaagen Fibre, as well as highlighting the existence of 34 private woodlot licences. These allow areas of private or leased land up to 1,200 hectares to be logged.

Marshall himself is the holder of one such licence. He listed the area’s major sawmills and buyers of fibre as Interfor, Vaagen Fibre, Son Ranch, John Lindquist, Ed Carson and one at Christina Lake There are also other smaller operators scattered throughout the region, in addition to several buyers from outside the Boundary, including Gorman’s, Kalesnikoff and Zelloff, illustrating not only the size of the forestry industry in the area, but also the fact that many operators are family owned, which bodes well for the health of the industry.

That said, Marshall did lament the fact that the provincial government clearly supports the continued expansion of the larger players such as Interfor, making it more difficult for the smaller operations, including

trucking companies, to remain competitive.

“I’d like to see 50 per cent of the lumber harvested in the Boundary stay in the Boundary,” Marshall said. “The forests here belong to us and it is we who should be reaping the benefits of this valuable resource.”

Several members of the audience offered their own observations about environmentalism in general, including Terry Jackson, who described his recent eye-opening experience driving through Texas on his way home from Mexico. “Parts of the state looked like an industrial wasteland and the same applied to Southern Nevada, “Jackson said.

The audience in general felt that British Columbia could be doing a better job with the environment.

Marshall concluded by suggesting the forest needs more constructive management and that the province and its legislation should be viewing the industry with communities in mind as opposed to large corporations.

Tips to investing in RRSPs Let’s start with an obvious but important question. What is an RRSP? You may know that RRSP stands for Registered Retirement Savings Plan. But it’s easy to be confused about what that really means.

If you think you buy an RRSP, you wouldn’t be the first person to make that mistake. Actually, you buy investments – mutual funds, stocks, bonds, guaranteed investment certificates, annuities, etc. – and register them with the federal government. When you retire, you’ll be able to use the money that comes from the investments.

Is it a good idea to invest in an RRSP? The simple answer is yes. Many people are putting their money in RRSPs because they’ve been told they can reduce the amount of income tax they pay. They think, “Okay, I’m getting this tax savings every year.

It reduces my taxable income, so my overall taxes aren’t going to be as high.” For a lot of people, that’s a good enough reason to contribute to an RRSP. Paying less income tax has always been a good idea.

If you’re self-employed, you have another reason to invest in an RRSP. It may be the only way to save for retirement, since you probably aren’t working at a company that sets up pension plans for its employees.

Whatever your reasons, the most important thing you can do as far as investing in RRSPs is concerned is to start contributing regularly as early as possible. When you start early, you give your money more time to grow.

Let’s say you’re 45 years old and put $100 dollars into RRSP investments every month. We’ll assume a return of 6% per year. At age 65, the total value of your investment would be $45, 344. Now, if you’re 25 years old and invest the same monthly amount with the same return, the total value of your RRSP at 65 would be $190,768. You can see how the extra two decades of investing makes a big difference.

Perhaps you’re thinking that you don’t have $100 to put away every month. Try investing in small doses by setting up a plan where your contributions flow directly from your bank account to your RRSP on the day you’re paid. A few dollars now will go a long way later. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your RRSP will grow – if you contribute regularly!

Think about borrowing money to invest in your RRSP. At today’s low interest rates this can be a very effective strategy. You will reduce your taxable income and may increase your tax refund. Many people then take that refund and use it to help pay off their loans. Ask your advisor if this approach makes sense for you.

Remember: the best thing you can do for your retirement fund is to put away the maximum amount allowed by the government. If you’re short, you can take out a “catch-up” loan. Or, you can carry forward your unused contribution to a future year.

To keep track of all your assets, you may want to consider keeping them in one investment company. There are distinct advantages to this strategy. You’ll receive more effective advice because your advisor has access to your full financial picture. And you’ll be able to see all or most of your investments by looking at one statement.

Nobody’s financial situation will be exactly the same as yours. That’s why your financial strategy should reflect your needs, desires, and goals.

It’s smart to buy local The desire to “eat locally” continues to intensify in these food-challenged times. With the recent price of imported cauliflower “blooming” to a staggering $10 in some markets, the time-honoured practice of storing enough classic root vegetables to last a family the entire winter does nothing but increase in popularity, particularly in rural areas. Add to that the new wave greenhouse “indoor gardens” which can produce greens on a consistent cycle, and one can enjoy fresh produce all year round without having to rely on a grocery giant.

According to researchers, the average Canadian meal travels 2,400 kilometres to get from field to plate and contains ingredients from five countries in addition to our own. That makes for a lot of “food miles,” a term coined in 1994 by Britain’s SUSTAIN organization. Over the past 20 years in North America, the import and export of food have tripled and, combined with other agricultural products, now account for more than a quarter of the goods transported on our roads. Food is now also the largest component of airfreight, which is the most polluting form of transportation. How does this affect the “bottom line,” i.e. the environmental damage that is wrought by the simple delivery of Californian cantaloupes, Mexican cucumbers and Hawaiian pineapples ?

When food is transported lengthy distances, much fossil fuel is burnt, creating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This emits a variety of toxic chemicals that contribute to air pollution, acid rain and climate change. What about the distance local food travels?

Studies have shown that local food distribution systems can reduce environmental impacts significantly, as opposed to conventional truck-delivered food systems which can be four to 17 times more damaging to our environment. A study by Toronto’s Food Share found that a meal produced with ingredients from a local farmers’ market travelled a total of 101 kilometres while an average imported meal travelled 5,364 kilometres, creating 100 times more GHGs than the farmers’ market meal.

All of this makes buying locally the smart and prudent thing to do, and that extends to the meat market as well. Countless urbanites and their rural neighbours are driven by a need to know the exact source of their lamb, beef, chicken and pork, and are willing to pay higher than market-price for their animal protein.

Such is the value of local trade, be it in food, product or services, and the Boundary is a prime example of a region in which it makes sense in so many ways.

Presentation Hutton Elementary teachers Tammy Jacobs and Keira Angus spoke to the board of trustees at the regular board meeting oof School District 51 on Feb. 9 to talk about a new and exciting method for teachers to communicate with parents.

The pair has began to use a phone/ tablet app called FreshGrade to show weekly updates of students’ progress with their parents. Both say it’s a great way to send a “snapshot” of a child’s day at school so parents can easily discuss how the child’s day went.

Kevin Argue, SD51 superintendent of schools, said that there are a few other teachers in the district using the app but Jacobs and Angus are the most experienced.

“It’s a choice they’re making to use it,” he said. “It can be used just to communicate to parents; it can be used to just put your marks in and those can be shared with parents; and it can be used as a portfolio, where a student is videoed reading at their level, for example, and that is shared with the parent. It gets posted like on Facebook but only the

parent can see it.”

The school board received a letter from Benjamin Jepsen regarding a committee he is on that is working toward getting a Syrian refugee family to Grand Forks. Jepsen said it would be a massive endearvour and would take the entire community to get behind it.

He added that the committee is looking at different options to get one or more families to Grand Forks.

Argue said that at this point, the group is just looking at options regarding bringing a Syrian refugee family but nothing is confirmed yet that there will be. “We have some resources from the Ministry of Education on how to best do this,” he said.

Amended budget bylaw

The board unanimously passed final reading of the Amended Annual Budget Bylaw. Total operating revenue for SD51 for the year ending June 30, 2016 is $15,456,221 with most coming from provincial grants from the Ministry of Education ($15,235,540).

The total expenses in the budget are $15,798,221 with $12,091,562 coming from instruction.

The board of trustees voted in favour of adopting a policy to allow for video surveillance on the exterior of school district properties for the reason of deterring acts of vandalism, crime, and inappropriate behaviour, and to enhance student safety.

Public use of school facilities The board approved and adopted policy No. 2060 - Public Use of School Facilities. The policy applies to all rentals of school district facilities except those for which the school board has entered into a separate joint use agreement.

The policy states that: 1. The school board’s first consideration for school facilities is to meet the needs of students and school programs…; 2. The board agrees, however, that school facilities should be used as extensively as possible by community/public organizations and other groups when not required for district educational programs. Preference will be given to activities for educational, cultural or recreational value and to children’s groups. The policy also includes recommendations for schedule of fees and priorities for use.

4H club sets dates for speeches OLIVIA SCHNEIDER Submitted

Members of the Boundary C 4H Club met for the second time on Feb. 4.

The dates were set for this year’s speeches, with the nine-year-old members speaking at the March 3 meeting and all other members on March 9 at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds.

Also during the meeting, committees were formed to help organize club

activities throughout the year, including the Cattle Baron’s Ball on April 9, budget planning and marketing.

Ranch Horse members have had two opportunities to get together this year.

The first was a ride from Fossen Ranch on Jan. 23 and the next was to check cows, practice roping and share a meal together on Feb. 11. A similar evening is planned for Feb. 18.

Beef members are working with their projects and sheep members will be

starting lamb projects later in the spring as lambs are not yet born.

Sewing members who started their projects in early December 2015 are working on them and should be completed on April 3.

All other members received their record books at the last meeting and are working on speeches and planning for educational displays, demonstrations or speak and shows to be presented at Rally Day in May.

Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival founders Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi have announced that, while last August’s Rock Creek fire caused the cancellation of their third installment, the festival will return in 2016, scheduled for Aug. 19-21 at the Rock Creek fairgrounds.

The 2015 festival, called off due to safety concerns just two days before it was set to begin, was hit hard by the cancellation. Hargrave and Zahrabi, however, are “rallying for Rock Creek” and bringing the three days of music, art, camping, and freshness back for another year.

“Last year’s cancellation was difficult to say the least, but it has motivated us to come back even stronger this year,” Zahrabi said. “Quality music, chill vibes, awesome value, maximum freshness-that’s what Ponderosa is, and this year our fans have an added opportunity to directly help a community that was hit by the worst forest fire in over 30 years.”

The two also continue to ensure that the event benefits and supports the community of Rock Creek as much moving forward as they have in the past. The donations from November’s “Let’s Build A House!” fundraiser at the Imperial in Vancouver will help build a new home this spring in Westbridge for the Winn family. In addition, a portion of each ticket sold for the 2016 festival will be donated to Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC, one of the organizations spearheading the rebuilding efforts.

“People are always asking us how they can help, and well, this is it,” said Zahrabi.

“By purchasing tickets early, people not only secure their three days of music and sun for an unbeatable price, they also help give the festival the boost it needs to stay afloat while donating funds directly to the rebuild efforts in the community. It’s a win, win, win.”

Thank You Members of the Midway Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend their sincerest thanks to everyone who attended and supported the New Years Celebration (Mardi Gras Gala) again this year.

The festivities were once again fully sponsored by Doug and Jackie “Jolley” McMynn, and their generosity provided an outstanding evening for all attendees. The evening was a group effort once again led by Jolley and Tia with decoration, John and Tasha Ho and Linda Demchuk preparing an incredible meal and Midway Fire members doing the set up and clean up. We simply cannot thank all of you enough for your generosity and the hours of hard work you put into making this event such a huge success.

The event was also intended to assist Midway Volunteer Fire Department in raising funds. Along with everything else they provided towards the event, Doug and Jolley did not stop there. They presented Midway Volunteer Fire Department with an additional cheque for $1500 based on compensation ‘profit’ they had received for provision of meals to the fire fighters during the Rock Creek Fire. They opted not to keep any profit and pass along that money to the fire department. A most gener-

ous and philanthropic gesture which is so appreciated!

We also would like to thank all of our benevolent donors who supported out efforts by providing over 100 door prizes and raffle items for the event. While we have excellent support locally, the hard work of members Jennifer Agar and Matt Balch extended beyond the reaches of the Boundary to outside area businesses who knew about the fires and were very giving, gladly contributing to the efforts.

February 15, 2016, marks the beginning of Chamber of Commerce Week, an opportunity for B.C.’s more than 125 Chambers of Commerce to showcase their hard work on behalf of businesses across the province.

This year, Chambers are celebrating the theme of “Empowering B.C. businesses” – a theme that highlights how Chambers strive to empower and grow each business in their community.

Every day, Chambers actively strengthen local businesses through networking events, mentorship opportunities, professional development activities and other unique programming. Whether hosting events and business awards, supporting young entrepreneurs through mentorship programs, providing community-tailored support such as hospitality training in tourism communities, or organizing unique travel experiences for companies interested in learning more about different international markets, Chambers are sharply focused on empowering each and every member business to succeed.

Simultaneously, the Chamber network – B.C.’s largest business organization – is advocating for policy changes to further drive local businesses’ success.

Right now, for example, B.C.’s Chambers are leading efforts to advocate that the provincial government maintain a low tax rate for credit unions, which provide a key source of local business financing for communities right across B.C. This is significant because for 44 communities in B.C., there are no alternative lenders. Keeping that credit union tax rate low is critical to seeing sufficient dollars flow into community businesses, both to launch start-ups and to enable established businesses to secure growth financing.

Chambers are also leading efforts to establish permanent inter-municipal business licenses. These licenses provide business owners with the geographic flexibility that many need, particularly in areas such as the construction trades. Right now, inter-municipal business licenses are moving from a pilot project to a permanent fixture in four Lower Mainland communities; the Chamber network hopes to further build on this success, with a vision of one day having a single cross-B.C. business license.

These are just two positive changes that the Chamber network is leading for B.C. businesses. Among many areas of impact, B.C.’s Chambers have been a leading voice: • encouraging balanced budgets at all levels of government; • calling for a made-in-B.C. value-added tax to support businesses in investing in their own growth; • calling for solutions to B.C.’s skills gap; and • encouraging municipalities to actively support local economic development.

All of these policy pushes, together with Chambers’ local efforts, empower B.C.’s businesses and drive British Columbians’ success.

Boundary Country Regional Chamber On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, welcome to the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce.

We are a new Chamber that looks to advance our member’s growth successes and provide increased opportunities for membership. As a member based organization the Chamber’s role is significant and its responsibility substantial.

Many new opportunities will be presented in this upcoming year and as the world continually changes around us we will need to ensure we are staying on track. In January we held our strategic planning session where we reset our focus and developed our goals for the next 1 to 3 years.

2016 we will celebrate our past successes by continuing our Business after Business Open Houses, e-blasts & newsletters, social media, advertising, marketing & networking opportunities, along with the many benefits of being a BC Chamber of Commerce member. BCRCC has also starting a new Shop Local program in 2016, encouraging Member-to Member discount/ benefits within the Boundary.

BCRCC AGM is March 10, 2016. We are calling for Board Directors to represent the Boundary; Beaverdell, Bridesville, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Greenwood, Midway, Rock Creek and Westbridge. 9 Directors in total, nomination will be accepted from the floor. New Member welcome!

BCRCC will be engaged in roundtable discussions, March 17, 2016. We will be hosting our first discussion, with Tourism being the topic. BCRCC looks forward to hosting more throughout the Boundary with groups such as big & small industry, business, merchants, community events and economic growth. We are the voice of business, a community advocate, connector and communicator for local, provincial and federal issues on behalf of our members.

This will be an incredible year building on new & old relationships, adding events to include community Movies in the Park, a BCRCC Golf Tournament October 1, 2016, updating our website to include a better business directory and calendar of events. We are committed to providing value and meeting the needs of our membership.

Manson returns to open K&K Meats ANDREW TRIPP

When Kena Manson graduated from the College of the Rockies culinary program, she never imagined she would end up back in her hometown of Rock Creek running her own meat shop.

With the retirement of local butcher John Solowy, however, and the resulting empty space that served as his shop for many years, Manson and fiance Kevin Dietrich saw an opportunity for both a business and a way for Manson to return to her roots.

Manson graduated from Boundary Central Secondary School in 2013 and headed to Cranbrook shortly thereafter, completing the culinary program at the local community college a year later.

“I really enjoyed the butcher component of the culinary program,” Manson explained, “and it taught me extensive knife skills, which inspired me to apply to the National Meat Training Centre at Olds College in Alberta.”

Manson, the only female student, thrived in the program, graduating three months later with one of the highest grades in the class.

The day following graduation, the centre hired Manson to run the retail store as well as to help instruct students on the slaughter

and cutting floors.

“I would likely have stayed at the college if this great business opportunity did not come up, and it is very nice being home,” Manson said.

One of K&K’s specialties is gourmet sausage, infused with fruit and spices, and Manson feels it’s important to make her products gluten-free. “Most families these days have at least one member who cannot include gluten in their diet and I want my products to be an option for everyone,” she said.

K&K Meats’ goal is to source their meat locally and bring the finest that the West Boundary has to offer to the plates of locals and visitors alike.
