Thank You to our Volunteers “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” - Winston Churchill To all our Volunteers who work so tirelessly, we extend our gratitude for your efforts, your dedication and commitment to the success of the Filberg Festival. Without you it could not be done. We would also like to thank our volunteer sponsors Canadian Western Bank - Courtenay Branch and RE/MAX Ocean Pacific Realty whose support will assist with looking after our volunteers during the Festival. “Canadian Western Bank strongly believes in supporting

and strengthening the communities that our customers and employees call home. We are proud to be involved with the Filberg Society, preserving a gem in our Valley through an iconic annual festival. The commitment of volunteers in organizing the Festival is absolutely amazing and once again demonstrates the spirit of our community. Thank you for giving us an opportunity to help!” — Jean-Marc Jaquier- Branch Mgr. - Canadian Western Bank Courtenay

Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in. ~Author Unknown At RE/MAX Ocean Pacific Realty we salute the volunteers who make the Filberg Festival a resounding success, year after year. The Comox Valley, host of the Olympic Flame, of BC Seniors Games, recognized as a cultural capital of Canada, is the kind of place you like to call ‘home’ because of volunteers like you. Gandhi said “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” By volunteering, by believing in ‘all work and no pay’, you will make the Filberg Festival a warm memory for the child at the hands on farm, for the visitor seeking directions, for

the exhibitor connecting to Wi-Fi and for the performer needing a hand. You are our ambassadors, not only to residents but to the many visitors from other communities, provinces and countries. Thank you for making the Filberg Festival experience something the entire Comox Valley is proud of, one of our jewels, one of the corners of our hearts we reserve for that special place we call home. Featured Guest Artisan GORDON

HUTCHENS Gordon Hutchens’ studio is nestled in 19 wooded acres in the secluded north end of Denman Island, British Columbia, a 5 minute drive from the ferry landing. For nearly 30 years Gordon has operated his extensive studio here while exhibiting across Canada, from Halifax, Montreal and Toronto to Vancouver & Victoria. He has had over 25 one-man shows and over 70 group exhibitions across Canada and the U.S., with 3 major exhibitions in Japan.

Gordon has also taught courses and workshops for many colleges and potter’s guilds. His works and articles have been published in various ceramics magazines and books. He is the author/host of 4 videos: Beginning Raku, Variations on Raku and two videos on Salt and Soda Firing. Gordon received an honours degree in Fine Arts from the University of Illinois majoring in Ceramics (Clay and Glass Blowing). Three semesters of glaze & clay chem-

istry combined with working through school as the ceramics laboratory assistant gives him an unusually strong technical background. Gordon’s work is well known for the depth and diversity of his glazes and the strength and refinement of his forms. Gordon formulates and blends all his own clay bodies using many different clays from across North America, and bases his porcelain body on a high quality kaolin from England. Local materials are also

utilized. Clay from his own property is high in iron and is used in earthenware bodies and in oil spot glazes and metallic luster glazes. Seaweed from the beach is used in salt/sagger firings. Local wood ash is another major glaze ingredient. Gordon Hutchens produces a variety of work from sculptured to functional, and utilizes an extremely broad range of techniques. Works in his showroom include: Raku, Salt Glaze Stoneware, Crys-

33RD FILBERG FESTIVAL 2015

Spend an evening with Cowboy Junkies This BC Day long weekend the Filberg Festival will celebrate 33 years of showcasing the best in Canadian arts, crafts and music. This annual Festival is the “major” fundraiser for the Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park, so we as producers are continually looking for ways to keep the Festival fresh so it can continue to sustain its longevity and provide the much needed funds to keep the park & its heritage buildings in good repair. The Filberg Festival has always been known for its great entertainment and this year we are sure to exceed your expectations. New to the 2015 Festival is a Friday evening performance featuring Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band the Cowboy Junkies. Cowboy Junkies were formed in Toronto in 1985 by siblings Michael Timmins, Margo Timmins, Peter Timmins and friend Alan Anton. They are best known for the seminal album, The Trinity Session, which established them at the forefront of the alternative country movement. For more than 20 years, Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. The Festival will clear the grounds at 6:00pm and re-open at 7:00pm with a performance from 7:15pm – 9:45pm. A limited number of tickets are available on line only for this special evening concert. Opening for the Cowboy Junkies will be The Lion, The Bear, The Fox. Tickets are priced at $39.00 for festival seating. We can’t think of a better way to spend a summer evening! Why not grab some food from one of our food vendors and enjoy an evening concert in a gorgeous setting knowing that you are supporting the Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park! Susan Lewis & Wendy Sears Filberg Festival Producers

COMOX ROTARY STAGE HOST: (MAIN STAGE)

MARNIE MARTIN has been living in the Valley for almost 12 years. She started out as a singer herself, studying music in L.A. at Musician’s Institute and she now works as a Voice over artist for companies all over the world doing narration, commercials, e-learning and all things voice. She lives here on the Island with her husband, has 3 children and loves the cultural diversity and lifestyle that the Comox Valley offers. She is thrilled to be joining the Filberg Festival as this year’s emcee and host.

PARK & RIDE Getting to the Festival As parking is limited at the Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park and in the surrounding neighbourhood we encourage you to either walk, cycle or use the public transit system if you live locally. If you are driving to the Festival we suggest you take advantage of our Park & Ride shuttle service provided by Ambassador Transportation which is located at 1475 Noel Avenue. For a donation (suggest $2 per person) Ambassador’s friendly drivers will drop you off near the Festival entrance and take you back to your vehicle when you are

done for the day. This service runs during Festival hours from 9am to 6pm Friday through Sunday and 9am to 5pm on Monday. Service for the Friday evening concert will run from 6:30pm to 10:00pm. If you wish to ride your bike to the Festival, the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition will be on site to check your bike in their secure lock-up also by donation. The limited parking space on site is saved for those designated as handicapped. These spots do fill up quickly so access is available to drive in and drop off passengers at the gate.
