Acknowledging there “may be cases of (sexual misconduct) at CFB Comox,” 19 Wing Commander Col. Tom Dunne welcomed Canada’s highest-ranking woman and leader of a response team on a report on sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces to the base Thursday.

Maj.Gen. Christine Whitecross and her team were appointed to respond and study the report, which was created by former Supreme Court Justice Marie Deschamps, who found sexual misconduct is “endemic” in the Canadian military.

Whitecross conducted two town hall-style meetings Thursday morning to members, and acknowledged afterwards in an interview there is inconsistency to how people are processing the report.

“A number of people are surprised by the report; a number of people find it difficult to understand how we got to that position, and on the other extreme there are a number of people who think the report is bang-on and are happy that it is being addressed.”

In the report, Deschamps made 10 recommendations, which Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson accepted two outright and eight in principal.

One of the recommendations is that the Canadian Armed Forces create an independent centre where victims can seek support and advice.

Last Wednesday, a CBC report noted Canada’s top general issued orders for the military to plan to ignore key recommendations, including the creation of the independent centre.

In response to the story, Lawson noted he has accepted the recommendation of a ‘Centre of Accountability ‘ - separate from the chain of command - in principal.

He added before the final report was received, he took a proactive measure to stand-up a dedicated team to examine the report and to develop an action plan to respond to it.

tions or orders for (Whitecross) to ignore the recommendations of the final report. Any such suggestion is quite simply false,” he explained in a media release.

Whitecross said Thursday she has never received mixed messages and hopes they will not restrict a member’s ability to speak out about any sexual misconduct.

“I want to make it very clear that I’ve never had a mixed message. The direction I got from the leadership at the Canadian Armed Forces - chief of the defence staff - has been constant since he appointed me,” she explained.

“We’ve always been very open to the mandate which has been to address all 10 recommendations from Madame Deschamps and to bring them forward. That’s never changed.”

Whitecross said through town halls, discussions and conversations, behaviour change in the short term will lead to long-term cultural change in the Canadian Forces.

Socially, she noted, there’s an imperative to treat everybody with dignity and respect, but as military members, it’s important to instil the cohesion amongst members that will yield operational success and excellence.

Dunne explained when creating her report, Deschamps did have the opportunity to visit the base and speak to members, as her mandate was to speak anonymously to several air force, army and navy bases.

While he acknowledged it’s not quantified or aggregated in any way, her report shows there were problems identified.

“As the local commander of the base, I am not aware of specific incidents that are not being looked after but all I can do is accept the fact that Madame Deschamps did speak to people who had concerns across the country, and I would extrapolate from that there may be cases of it here.”

He added he will take every case seriously and will help victims in any way through the chain of command.

With the first report due in the fall, Whitecross hopes to have tangible action plans and even measurements in all of the action items.

“I can’t really say how long it will take us. Culture change takes months and years; behaviour change as well.

As we’re moving forward, we’re hoping that by the fall we’ll actually be able to give an indication of where we are and where we’re going.”

At 3 a.m. Sunday, May 10, thieves broke into a yard in Black Creek and made off with three chainsaw carvings: a five-foot wizard (above), a three-foot soaring eagle (below) and a two-foot owl.

“They had parked their white car on the opposite side of the highway and snuck in through the fence,” said Angela Kroeker, who, along with her partner, recently opened an outdoor gallery in Black Creek. “We feel so violated, how can people steal from others that are just barely making ends meet.”

Strata bylaws info session

The Comox Valley School District needs to trim $2.2 million from its 2015/16 budget — as it did for this school year.

For 2016/17, it’s facing a further a $1.8 million shortfall, though SD71 secretary-treasurer Russell Horswill wouldn’t be surprised if that number turns out to be $2.2 million as well.

“That’s what we’re struggling with right now,” Horswill said at a public information session Wednesday.

“Last year was the first really difficult budget. Getting into the $2 million range was unpleasant for us.”

A $1.1 million shortfall is expected for 2017/18.

Nearly $50,000 was saved in a reorganization at Cumberland Community School.

The biggest saving came by combining two school libraries into one, which means one less library clerk is required. As well, two head custodians are no longer required, which doesn’t translate into a layoff but a reduced premium paid to employees.

be dedicated to mail delivery. Savings will come by not running, fuelling and maintaining buses, but it also means a reduced internal mail delivery service.

“That’s a difficult one,” Horswill said.

“Those are good people.”

Educational program reductions exceed $1.1 million. Pending budget approval by the school board, student services will drop by $389,270, which includes counsellors, speech language pathologists and others. The total FTE reduction is 4.15. Reductions also include secondary school librarians ($164,150), career programs ($103,180) and secondary pupil-teacher ratio ($477,807).

“The board is not happy doing these (cuts),” Horswill said.

“Nobody likes it.”

Removing a senior science lab support position ($24,890) was unpopular with the crowd. One person said the move is contrary to the school board’s guiding principles to support student success and to foster learning. Another said the job entails more than glass washing. It also involves a safety element. Horswill said schools need to prioritize where funds are going. He also noted a monthly investment into health and safety, which is overseen by Paul Berry, a district principal.

“This is what the board calls an ugly budget,” said trustee/ finance committee chair Peter Coleman, noting the problem of declining enrolment.

Last year’s drop was attributed to a large Grade 12 class leaving the system and a smaller kindergarten class coming in.

The district hopes the shrinking enrolment issue levels off in the near future.

A class of 11 students have already graduated from a forklift program.

The Sally Ann also expects to offer a certified occupational first aid course in late-May. The course can accommodate about 20 people per session. Students need to pass a test at the end.

“We’ve never taught first aid here,” community ministries director Brent Hobden said, noting other upcoming courses in FoodSafe and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).

“It makes that whole package together. It certainly could make the difference between somebody getting a job or not getting a job.”

Hobden says some guests have not bothered applying for jobs because they assumed they would fail if an exam was required. However, taking a course in a comfortable, encouraging environment at Family Services affords them a better chance of passing a test.

“You’d be amazed what this little certificate does for somebody when they recognize they have something in their wallet they’ve never had before,” said Hobden. “It’s pretty exciting

to see how much confidence that can give you.”

A further initiative on the horizon is an anger management program headed by an experienced facilitator. The first information session is expected within a month. The program will be offered in-house, which provides a level of comfort for guests.

“I can just see that it’s going to grow into more and areas, and have an opportunity to serve more and more of our guests,” Hobden said. “We’re looking at expanding this into the community for several different professional groups.

“There’s ways you deal with anger, and that’s what our instructors are extremely familiar with, and being able to pull the information out of the clients that are coming in. And to recognize, there’s more to the anger than what you’re telling us, and being able to dig to the bottom and find out what that is, and helping people recognize what the triggers are, and help them more appropriately with it.”

Dangers of inner-city airstrips are real

T

wo separate aviation incidents within 36 hours of each other in Courtenay created a lot of discussion regarding the safety of the Courtenay Airpark.

At the scene of the May 9 crash landing in the Comox Valley Animal Hospital parking lot, Don Bardonnex said that was his 10th response to an aviation incident in his sevenand-a-half years as Courtenay fire chief.

Certainly not all incidents are as serious as the May 9 crash, which sent the pilot to hospital after his plane reportedly lost power. (It is believed the pilot was attempting to make an emergency landing in the field behind the animal hospital.)

The less serious of the two incidents that week saw a small plane overshoot the runway at the airpark and crash into the fence.

Although there were no injuries in that incident, there very well could have been a tragic ending. A children’s playground sits not 50 feet from the fence line.

A quick search brings up at least three aircraft incidents with planes at the Rotary Skypark end of the airpark in the first four years of the Skypark playground’s existence.

Arguments that the playground does not line up with the runway are illogical. That’s like arguing that ditches are not part of the road, so no cars should ever hit the ditch.

When a plane is in distress, anything can happen.

The Rotary Skypark is a beautiful facility, and a popular one as well. But how much forethought was given to the park’s location? Not nearly enough.

A playground at the end of an aviation runway is a bad idea. It’s an accident waiting to happen, and when it does, all the apologies in the world may not be enough to rectify the result.

Yes, the airpark has been a part of the Courtenay Estuary for a long time. It’s been around longer than most current residents.

But this may be one of those instances where “it was here first” is not the best argument.

With the natural densification of the city, the hazards of having an inner-city airport grow exponentially — and the risks of injuries to innocent bystanders also grows.

Perhaps the time has come to re-think the practicality of an inner-city airstrip.

It was 2008 when word first surfaced that B.C. farmland was being bought up to grow trees as a European carbon offset.

Reckitt Benckiser Inc., a British-based global manufacturer of household products such as Lysol spray and Calgon laundry soap, bought 1,500 hectares east of Vanderhoof and planted aspen. Since tree growing is permitted in the Agricultural Land Reserve, a use intended for fruit, ornamental or nursery trees, no permission was needed. And to meet the carbon offset rules of the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change, a 100-year restrictive covenant against harvesting trees was issued by B.C.’s land titles office.

Goodbye farmland.

After that deal, the B.C. government changed legislation in 2011 to require permission from the Agricultural Land Commission to make these covenants valid. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick says he is waiting for that process to be tested.

It likely will be soon. Reckitt has bought another 7,000 hectares of cleared farmland from Prince George down through the Cariboo to Quesnel.

So naturally there is pressure to sell.

Perhaps Letnick is right, and the ALC will stop productive farmland from being turned back into forest.

While we’re waiting for that, here are a couple of other questions.

What happens when these forests burn? The first big forest fire of 2015 grew out of control near Prince George last week. And since aspen doesn’t last 100 years, what is its real carbon offset value?

How’s that European carbon trading market doing? It’s a mess, with the cost of emitting a tonne of carbon dioxide fallen far below what’s needed to be effective, and Interpol investigating various schemes to game the system.

Remember B.C’s own Pacific Carbon Trust? This Gordon Campbell brainchild to sell carbon offsets was quietly greenhouse gassed after the Auditor General revealed its first two big projects were of questionable value to say the least.

Finally, does anyone really think that returning B.C.’s scarce farmland to forest is a good way to change the weather? Would it offset the loss of local production and trucking in farm produce from elsewhere?

And where are B.C.’s tireless food security advocates on this dubious scheme?

NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham has been tracking these acquisitions, and she says there are more deals in the works.

Last fall, the Bulkley Nechako Regional District wrote to Victoria Wood, Reckitt Benckiser’s “global head of sustainability,” telling her that “the planting of trees on centrally located and productive agricultural lands is not appropriate” and would weaken local farm economies.

Wood responded that the RB Trees project targets only “marginally productive” land such as pasture, abandoned farms or those that have been up for sale for long periods.

Former Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson raised the issue in the legislature in 2008, noting that Crown land near Vanderhoof had been sold for farming, bought by a numbered company and then “flipped” for around $1 million to RB Trees.

Now mayor of Quesnel, Simpson takes issue with the company’s claims with his usual shyness.

“It’s bull----,” he told me. “This isn’t marginal land.”

He said it includes prime alfalfa fields and historical ranch and forage crop lands. In one case, neighbours found out about the new use when they saw a helicopter spraying herbicide to prepare the area for tree seedlings.

Dear editor, Re: Expect Less, May 5 editorial When you say that Canadians do and should hold education and health care dear I couldn’t agree with you more.

When you say “just don’t call them free”, again, right on Mr. Editor. As for your statement that the costs are spiralling out of hand and privatization is the only way out I couldn’t disagree more.

How can we reasonably believe a for-profit model would mange increased costs? Privatization will assure a boundless range of services to those who can afford it, a limited range of service to those workers with a limited budget and nothing to the working class poor and the under/ unemployed. Now, if you ignore the back door cost to the country of under treated illness, disease and injury you have made a saving but we all know that health goes well beyond health care costs. Budgets are such sweet fiction.

A socially responsible government can offer a reasonable range of health-care services to all Canadians.

It would take long-range planning beyond the four-year election cycle, a federal government capable of leadership to set and enforces service standards, and stable long-range funding to provinces. A sustainable, publicly funded health-care system needs incentives to reward cost-effective innovations and reformation of traditional care models, and the authority to reform unproductive practices and models of service delivery.

Our health-care system can overcome problems related to wait times and lack of primary health providers,

Dear editor, Re: the editorial, “Expect Less” in the May 5 Record: Why should we? Over 90 per cent of Canadians support a publicly-funded universal health-care system over a for-profit, private model – and that support goes across party lines.

Regardless of income, home province or personal health status, all Canadians are meant to have access to medically necessary health-care services.

According to the World Bank, health-care spending in Canada as a percentage of GDP has actually decreased marginally since 2010.

National and international evidence shows that publicly funded universal health-care systems are the fairest and most cost-efficient way to provide access to health care. As much as critics would like you to believe otherwise, there is NO evidence anywhere that for-profit clinics significantly reduce wait times in the public system.

A Parliamentary Budget Office

report in 2014 estimated that corporate and personal tax breaks for the wealthy cost us $43 billion per year!

Let’s invest that money in much-needed national programs that benefit all of us, such as pharmacare, home and long-term health care for seniors and basic dental care.

Scott still angry with Comox council’s decision

Dear editor, I sure hope my son, Robert, doesn’t bulldoze me when I am old and decrepit.

Of course I am referring metaphorically to the houses built by Mack Laing that are scheduled for the bulldozer. I agree with the Town of Comox that the Shakeside house is beyond repair. However Baybrook House, where Alice Munro spent a winter, is in much better shape. An independent engineer in Courtenay did an inspection and agrees, the house is sound and needs upgrading for public use.

I, as well as many others, do not understand why Comox town council is so fixated on its destruction. Alice Munro, our only Nobel Prize winner for literature, wrote her short stories in that house. She must have been inspired by Brooklyn Creek that meanders into Comox Bay, with distant views of Comox Glacier, Mount Arrowsmith, and Denman and Hornby Islands. This time of year the park is alive with wild flowers and nesting birds. To lose this piece of history would be a tragedy.

Riding 240 kilometres is an achievement most cyclists would not forget.

For those riding in the annual Boomer’s Legacy Bike Ride, each kilometre covered is more than just a physical accomplishment, it’s an emotional one too.

“There’s emotional and physical satisfaction,” explains participant Greg Phelps. “(One of my) most memorable moments - I can’t really talk about it - is putting the pictures (of soldiers) up at the end of the ride. It gets you,” he added holding back tears.

Phelps has ridden in numerous Boomer’s Rides, an event created for Boomer’s Legacy, a foundation which helps military members help others.

The 100 per cent Canadian charitable organization was created in 2006 following the death of Cp. Andrew (Boomer) Eykelenboo (son of Maureen Eykelenboom),

who was killed in action in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan in August 2006.

In Boomer’s honour, the goal of the legacy is to empower all deployed Canadian Forces soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen with raised and donated funds, helping them to help others and provide much-needed humanitarian assistance to people wherever and whenever forces members are deployed.

Each participant in the Comox-to-Victoria ride which takes place June 13 and 14 - makes a commitment to raise funds for the projects. The cyclists, escorted by volunteer RCMP officers, will commemorate the sacrifice of fallen soldiers with photos and bios of soldiers on their bicycles. The ride wraps up a day later at a welcoming ceremony in Victoria with a moving Ceremony for Fallen Soldiers.

“We include everybody (from 2002 to present); it’s not just those from Afghanistan,” Maureen Eykelenboom notes. “That’s how it we started it, but it’s those who have been killed in the line of duty are remembered.

The ceremony at the end of the ride where every military member is put up on a wall and their name is read and it’s very emotional. That is key - that will always happen.

“It’s an honouring. You know for those other military members who were there and whose boots were on the ground, and they came home, they can at least know if they get called to go away again, and they don’t come home, we’re going to remember.”

One year, she recalls, she had one young soldier say her: “they’re not going to remember me.”

“I just said, ‘I will.’ It’s hard for them. It’s very emotional.”

While funds go towards projects such as providing medical care, life-saving surgeries for children and clothing and shoes for orphaned children, funds raised this year are helping those closer to home.

“It’s still Boomer’s Legacy, still a foundation, still helping out military members help others. Sometimes those others will be military members. The funds are always spent because a military member sees a need and requests funds,” she explains.

“This year’s bike ride is going to help Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs. It’s a program that just started over a year ago where they match a rescue dog and a veteran with PTSD and take them through a year-long training so that dog becomes an actual vested service dog.”

Boomer’s Legacy Bike ride, which is now in its sixth year, will be raising funds for Canadian Forces members on Vancouver Island - specifically for Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs for soldiers suffering from PTSD.

One of the riders last year is a serving member at CFB Comox — who wishes to remain anonymous — but has seen the direct effect a compassion dog can make in her life.

“I heard about (the program) through Maureen, and in my job in the military I actually treated several guys who had dogs from the program,” she says.

“I sort of saw the change in them, so through other CF members who had dogs I saw they were changing and how the dogs were improving their life, so when I had an opportunity to do it right away, I went for it.”

She adds not only does the training build the dog and veteran relationship, but it gets those suffering with PTSD into a routine.

“When you’re having a bad day, you still go, because it’s a group of people that you trust, and you’re accountable to … if you haven’t been leaving your house and doing things, you’ve got this commitment to spend about an hour to an hour-and-a-half with your dog every day where you’re walking and training.”

She adds she’s noticing changes every day working with her dog.

“I’m just out a lot more; I’m happy when I can bring the dog with me.

It really helps to reduce the anxieties.”

Eykelenboom adds it brings tears to her eyes when she sees the compassion a dog has and how they can sense when their owner is going through living an experience.

“We need to support those vets. Those of us who have stayed here don’t understand what they saw and went through.”

While Eykelenboom won’t be participating in the ride this year (she will be participating in the Wounded Warriors ride in Europe), Phelps calls her their “perspirational leader,” and says it’s important to keep in mind the reasons for the ride.

“There’s an old cliche — freedom isn’t free.”

So many people take advantage of the freedom of living in Canada, notes Eykelenboom.

“We just think we deserve it. I’m sorry — we don’t. We have military members that keep it for us. That’s what that base does. When you see the Snowbirds and the F-18s and the glider pilots, you know, they’re training. And their bottom line — helping us keep the freedom that we have.”

BUSINESS Locals wins award Locals at the Old House has earned top honours for innovative initiatives that have reduced the restaurant’s environmental impact.

By working with Leaders in Environmentally Accountable Foodservice (LEAF), Locals is the first B.C. restaurant to earn the top rating of Level III certification.

“The LEAF program provides third-party validation as to the degree to which a restaurant is environmentally friendly,” chef Ronald St. Pierre said. “Hundreds of indicators were used to determine where we stood in regards to our green efforts.

“We were still in our old location the first time we applied to the program, and were awarded Level I LEAF certification. When we moved to the Old House two years ago, we were able, with extensive renovations and implementation of new systems that better supported green practice in many departments, to achieve our

Level II certification. This past year we were able to build upon our improvements by changing to a line of green eco-logo certified products from Planet Clean.”

The restaurant also upgraded some of its kitchen equipment to Energy Star appliances, and it has a thorough recycling program.

“We would like to see more B.C. restaurants take up the challenge and become LEAF certified,” St. Pierre said.

Established in Calgary in 2009, LEAF is a non-profit organization that helps restaurants reduce their environmental impact and makes it easy for diners to identify green restaurants.

The organization provides a benchmark to measure the environmental sustainability of foodservice establishments in Canada and fosters sustainability by working with communities to support local economies.

Take a tour of area studios Comox Valley Arts proudly presents the 2015 Central Island Artisan Studio Tour (Spring Edition) on May 23 and 24.

A growing community of artisan crafters, fine artists and emerging creators in Central Vancouver Island (Parksville to Oyster River) has come together by way of Comox Valley Arts to open their doors for the public to wander through at leisure.

For two days, more than 55 working studios will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for free, public exploration. More than 70 artists of every discipline will be in attendance to discuss their work, share their process, and of course, happily sell their wares.

From just south of the Oyster River all the way to Errington, art enthusiasts can explore the beauty of Vancouver Island, both natural and man-made. Artisan studios that run the gamut of styles and mediums make for a fun, educational and mind-expanding opportunity to get out and do something new!

After the amazing hubbub of last Thursday’s successful four-hour fundraiser for the survivors of the Nepal earthquake when all the money raised was sent to the Canadian Red Cross, my recent interview with Dave Stewart stood in stark contrast.

Here was a man who takes his music really seriously, and I could only marvel at the range of music we call ‘jazz’.

From all of the frivolity of last week when four bands stirred a large crowd in high spirits to dig a little deeper for a good cause, to listening to an artist describing a totally different art form.

I could see that Dave was obviously struggling to explain the concept behind his upcoming show this Thursday at the Avalanche Bar. Determined, he pushed on.

“A few years ago I came across 14 arrangements of

music from the ‘Cool Jazz’ era. I thought that it would interesting, fun and uniquely challenging to put together a select group of eight musicians to play this music from a specific period in jazz history, hence the name of the group ‘Project 8’.

“Cool Jazz emerged in 1953 when Capital Records released an album entitled ‘Classics in Jazz, Cool and Quiet’. The music was created in part as a reaction to bebop and hard bop jazz styles of the late 1940s and ’50s, which were typified by fast, hard-driving lines and an emerging interest in more orchestrated arrangements for smaller groups.

“Players such as Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker pioneered the style, which is sometimes also called ‘Soft Bop’.”

He stopped to gather his thoughts, and continued.

“In the late 1950s and into the 1960s Dave Brubeck and Dave Pell furthered the style

and from it emerged ‘West Coast Jazz’.

“This collection of arrangements offers a challenge of blend, balance and flowing lines as well as an opportunity for individual players to solo within each of the arrangements, and provides the audience the unique experience of rehearing a jazz style that was made famous during the ’50s and ’60s.”

And so it is that we will be featuring this exciting jazz concept, with some of our region’s finest jazz musicians making up the octet, including Dave Stewart on trumpet, Claudio Fantinato on alto sax, Dan Craven on tenor sax, Brianne de Verteuil on baritone sax, Chad Geekie on piano, Marisha Devoin on bass, James McRae on drums and Paul Neuz on trombone.

Show time to this special presentation is 7:30 p.m.

Thunderballers showcase their skills The eighth annual Thunderball Steve Nash Skills Competition Night on May 6 at Vanier was a roaring success.

“Over 90 of our participants attended, and everyone had an awesome time,” said Thunderball spokesperson Larry Street. “We also had 20 of our coaches volunteering their time to help out and cheer on their teams.”

The event started at 5:30 and ended at 8:15 p.m. with six competitions for the kids, and a night-ending Coaches vs. Thunderballers game of ball tag.

“Always a favourite every year, and the coaches won this year after being upset last year,” Street noted.

Robert Douglas Bowie May 22, 1956 - May 10, 2015 Doug died suddenly at his home of complications from a bee sting at the young age of 58. Doug was born and raised in the Comox Valley, the son of Morag and Bob Bowie and the great grandson of Reginald T. Carwithen, one of the original settlers of the Comox Valley. He is survived by his wife, Gayle and his sons, Cris (Nicole), John and MacKenzie. He also leaves his grandchildren, Diceon, Emma Gayle and Terryann. He was predeceased by his sister Jane (Paul) Keoughan in 2013 and will be missed by his brother Ian (Sue) Bowie and his sister Betty (Bill) Lund.

Doug was a talented woodworker who milled his own lumber and built his home and all the outbuildings on his acreage in Merville. He was a hard worker who always made himself available whenever someone needed help. He and Gayle loved to camp with their grandchildren and he knew of many good fishing spots. In his younger years he loved his motorbike and working on farms. He played baseball, was a member of the Courtenay Swim Club and skiied at the Forbidden Plateau and Mt. Washington.

Doug had many relatives and friends who will miss his steady personality and quiet sense of humour. A Celebration of Life will be held at Doug’s home on May 24th at 2:00. Please bring a chair and a bite to eat. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to YANA or the Children’s Hospital.

William Francis (Frank) Harrison Frank passed away peacefully in Comox, BC, on May 9, 2015, at the age of 91. Born and raised in Langley BC, Frank joined the Canadian Navy in 1944, graduated from UBC’s Engineering School in 1949, and spent most of his working career with McMillan Bloedel in Port Alberni. Frank enjoyed many hobbies, particularly fishing, hunting, canoeing, woodworking, tennis and music. He was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Frank enjoyed a long retirement in the Comox Valley with Merrion, starting with building their dream home in Buckley Bay. The Anglican Churches in Port Alberni and Comox were a key part of his life and also the beneficiaries of Frank’s kindness and willingness to help others.

Frank is survived by his wife Merrion, his son Brian (Lou), and pre-deceased by his sisters Marianne and Joyce. Frank will also be lovingly remembered by brothers-in-law John (Joyce) and John Dugald (Carol), sister in-law Rosemary (Jerry), Merrions’ children Debbie (Paul) and Steve (Lois), grand children Ken (Katie), Sam (Krista), Eric, Alex, Andrea (Tyler), and great grand-son Parker.

The family also extends thanks to the staff at Glacier View Lodge for their loving care of Frank during the last 3 years, and to Rev. Jim Lyster, Rev Gordon Strain, and Fr. Lars Olsson.
