Agency makes a difference via housing support program Magdalene House Society to host Sweet Tooth for Justice Gala

A

lmost a year ago, the Magdalene House Society welcomed their first residents into their long-time project of a safe housing establishment for victims of human trafficking.

As their first year of funding comes to an end, the Society is looking forward to various fundraisers - including the Sweet Tooth for Justice Gala - to help them raise the money needed to keep the housing program functional for another year.

When all the calculations are said and done, the Magdalene House Society is looking to raise $380,000 to secure their future expenses and operations costs.

“The two women that we have in the Magdalene House right now - they have just come so far in their recovery. It’s amazing to see the changes in them,” said Executive Administrator of the Society, Marian Cloutier.

“They are moving from being very afraid to beginning to learn to trust people. They are laughing, enjoying life and starting to build even very basic skills like how to cook pancakes. Their lives have been so dysfunctional that coming into a regular household environment is a huge accomplishment.”

Cloutier said the first year of operations has been full of learning moments, but that each of these has been an opportunity to better the Magdalene House project.

“One of the biggest challenges that we realized very quickly was that we didn’t really have the capacity to be a firststage recovery home. That means taking women right off the street, out of their dangerous situation and straight into the house. That is primarily because when they are on the street, a lot of the women have addictions,” Cloutier explained.

“We didn’t have the capacity to work with them while they were detoxing. We realized that if we don’t have those skills and services in place, we will move to become a second-stage house.”

She said this presented a slight change in the working model of Magdalene House in that now the Society requires the women they take in to have completed a 30-day detox program. She said the new model of operations is working out much better than their original idea.

“The second-stage model is working quite well, but there were a few other things that had to be learned,” Cloutier added.

“These girls have lived some really tough lives on the street and sometimes one of the issues we see is the women have court charges against them. We were accepting girls into the house and realizing they needed to go to court in

Lethbridge or Saskatoon and just we don’t have the capacity to provide those services. We have been learning along the way to deal with issues like that.”

IT’S AMAZING TO SEE THE CHANGES IN THEM.” MARIAN CLOUTIER She said the Magdalene House Society has come too far to simply close the facility, so she and the other board members have been working hard to make the program the best it can be within its capacity.

At this time, the board is looking to secure the next year’s operational funding.

This year’s kickoff of their fundraising campaign will be launched at the annual Sweet Tooth for Justice Gala event this weekend.

“This year’s Sweet Tooth for Justice event has a big new element of a comedian from Denver. Her name is Stacey Peterson, and she will be providing the laughter for that evening. As well, we have a number of corporate sponsors on our side which is a new thing for us.

That’s great because it means we are getting our name out there,” Cloutier said.

The event is taking place on Feb. 20th at the Black Knight Inn from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased at www.magdalenehouse.ca or by calling 587-273-4324.

“We have sponsors taking care of the decor, Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut Red Deer donating the chocolate and have the Troubled Monk Brewery providing some different beer samples. This year we’re going to try a chocolate and wine pairing at the chocolate station,” Cloutier said.

Cloutier said they are trying a new kind of fundraising campaign this year where people purchase puzzle pieces worth either $5, $10, $20 or $25. The pieces will come together to create a large banner representing the values of the Magdalene House Society.

“It’ll be a great visual and as people buy

these one inch pieces, it will all come together. The poster says things like, ‘Fill our home with - love, respect, justice, hope’,” Cloutier said.

Dave Bouchard, president of the Magdalene House Society, said the home is extremely meaningful to the girls who reside there, and so it is important these fundraising events are successful.

“The largest part of our cost is staffing, because we are offering around the clock staffing. There is significant expense if you want to get good people and you have to pay them well,” Bouchard said.

“One of the things that impressed me the most was a resident who had written a letter to all of the board members. In that letter, something really stood out to me. She said it was the first time in her life that she’d been able to decorate a Christmas tree and to have a present under the tree with her name on it. When I read that part of the letter, I thought, what a simple gesture that meant so much to her. It was very moving.”

Red Deer RCMP warn about tax scams

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Locally, residents have been targeted by scammers claiming to be from Canada Revenue Agency and the Red Deer RCMP continue to make people aware that these types of scams are taking place.

“WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT. EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW THAT IT IS A SCAM, YOU NEED TO LET US KNOW THAT IT IS HAPPENING.” CPL. KARYN KAY Taxpayers across the country receive phone calls or emails from individuals impersonating CRA employees in this ongoing scam. The scammers tell taxpayers that they either owe money to the CRA or have a tax refund. Taxpayers are threatened with arrest or jail time if they do not take immediate action and provide money or personal or financial information.

“There is not a legitimate government agency that will demand payment in gift cards or credit cards or even demand information from you,” said Red Deer RCMP Cpl. Karyn Kay. “If it was a government agency, you would have received some type of letter from them

- you would know something is coming and you wouldn’t just get a phone call.

“Out of anyone the government is going to be the most legitimate.”

Kay added if a Red Deerian gets a phone call from a scammer, it is important to notify the police right away.

“We need to know about it,” she said.

“Even though you know that it is a scam, you need to let us know that it is happening.”

She added there are a number of things to remember if any Red Deerians receive this call.

“Never, ever give your banking information out unless you have initiated the call. The scammers are number spoofing so it’s important that someone doesn’t take that number and call them back,” said Kay. “And the biggest thing is don’t give into pressure - they are just on the phone - if they want to be mad or threatening we don’t have to give into that. We are still safe in our own homes.”

Last week, the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa sent out a press release warning Canadians of this very scam.

“The CRA takes these matters very seriously and provides substantial information to Canadians about how to protect themselves from scams undertaken using the CRA’s name. Informing yourself is particularly important during the tax filing season, when such scams peak,” said the Hon. Diane Lebouthillier, minister of National Revenue. This information, including examples of real scam telephone calls and e-mails, can be easily found on the CRA web site.

“Scammers are always looking for new ways to get your money or your personal information,” said Assistant Commissioner Todd Shean, who leads the RCMP’s Federal Policing Special Services. “The RCMP works every day to track down fraudsters and bring them to justice, but raising awareness about fraud is also important as it is one of the most effective ways of protecting Canadians from scammers. The more you know about a specific fraud, the less likely you’ll be a victim of that fraud.”

The RCMP plays a crucial role in educating the public about scams, and has a number of programs in place to track fraud, including one run by the Canadian AntiFraud Centre (CAFC). The CAFC monitors all types of scams, and warns Canadians

to be on the lookout for scammers during the upcoming tax season. The RCMP also works closely with the CRA to raise awareness about tax-related scams.

When CRA employees call taxpayers, they follow established procedures to ensure personal information is protected. To confirm the authenticity of a call, contact the CRA by using its official telephone number for individual tax inquiries: 1-800959-8281. You can also verify your individual tax account through a secure CRA portal: My Account.

COURT BEAT RESOLUTION IN WORKS FOR CONNATTY Court heard last Friday that a resolution was in the works for a man charged with impaired driving.

Chad Ryan Connatty, 31, is charged with impaired driving offenses in three unrelated incidents - two from Red Deer and one from Fort McMurray.

Defense Lawyer Jason Snider said a resolution for one of his impaired driving charges, after an incident last April in Red Deer, is being discussed.

Connatty also faces numerous charges after a collision last May 20 in Red Deer that resulted in the death of a 44-year-old Springbrook man. He has been charged with impaired driving causing death, operation of a motor vehicle while driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, blood alcohol exceeding .08 and driving while disqualified. He has also been charged with possession of marijuana.

Red Deer RCMP responded to a collision between a Ford 150 and a motorcycle May 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 19th St. and 30th Ave. Witnesses attempted to administer CPR to the driver of the motorcycle until Red Deer EMS and firefighters arrived. EMS staff worked hard to save the victim, a 44-year-old Springbrook man. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

by Erin Fawcett The collision occurred when the truck, which was driving northbound on 30th Ave., attempted to turn left onto 19th St. and collided with the motorcycle, which was driving south on 30th Ave. The victim was wearing a helmet.

Connatty was arrested at the scene and charged with impaired driving causing death.

A preliminary inquiry for these charges has been set for two days in March.

MURDER TRIAL BEGINS IN RED DEER The trial of a man charged with second degree murder after a woman’s body was found in a ditch near Innisfail in 2011 began in Red Deer on Monday.

Mark Lindsay, who is the son of a former Edmonton police chief, was charged with second degree murder after the body of Dana Turner, 31, was found in 2011, two months after she was reported missing.

The pair allegedly met at the Alberta Hospital where they were both patients.

The trial is taking place after lengthy delays - in 2013 a judge ordered a psychiatric assessment to determine Lindsay’s mental state.

It was deemed he was fit to stand trial. That assessment was ordered after Linsday was deemed not criminally responsible for serious assaults in British Columbia.

The trial continues in Red Deer until March 4th.

It will encompass motor homes of all types, diesel pushers, gas Class A & Class C motorhomes, Äfth wheels, travel trailers of all sizes & Toy Haulers. All of the innovations the industry has to offer will be on display. People can come and shop and compare, all under one roof,” said Vellner. “We’ll have about 200 new 2016 products and that is roughly $12 million in terms of value of product.”

To accompany the RVs on display, there will be 30 exhibitors who are selling products, services and accessories complimentary to the RV lifestyle.

Meanwhile, Vellner said now is the time to look at getting into the RV lifestyle.

“Supply and demand is a fairly fundamental economic driver. Typically in the off-season, like we are now, the demand is lower, so there’s more motivation on the part of dealers to get product moving. The timing of these shows is geared to kicking off our season,” said

Time to focus on maintaining a healthy heart February is Heart Month - with staff and volunteers of the Heart & Stroke Foundation aiming to bolster awareness about heart health and raise funds for research into better treatments and preventative education regarding heart health.

According to the Foundation, it was more than 60 years ago that a group of Canadians, “Including physicians and surgeons, established the National Heart Foundation of Canada with big hopes for the future.”

The goal was to give heart health a higher place on the public agenda and, “To educate Canadians about their hearts.”

In 1961, the Foundation was renamed the Canadian Heart Foundation.

The Foundation points out that many risk factors are described as silent killers, as there are no obvious symptoms. For example, a person may not even know they have either high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

There are also what are called non-modifiable risk factors, or factors that you can’t control, such as age, ethnic back-

ground, or having a family history of heart disease.

There are also modifiable risk factors, which include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, being physically inactive, being overweight, depression, social isolation and a lack of quality support.

Of course, there are all kinds of healthy benefits from heeding these factors. An active lifestyle can help cut the risk of not only heart disease but also improve mental health, for example.

Eat healthy also helps to control weight – tips run the gamut from including lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains as well as choosing healthier fats and oils and limiting sugary drinks like pop or overly salty foods.

Health officials also recommend drinking mainly water.

Women today are living longer, but that doesn’t mean that they still don’t face major health challenges. Cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) is a leading cause of death for Canadian

women, and yet many are not aware of this threat.

In fact, most Canadian women have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Women who have diabetes, come from certain ethnic backgrounds or are menopausal are even more at risk.

It is important for every woman to know about their risk factors and recognize the warning signs for heart disease and stroke so that they can prevent and manage them.

A stroke can happen when an artery to the brain becomes blocked or bursts, and the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off.

The longer the brain goes without oxygen and nutrients supplied by blood flow, the greater the risk of permanent brain damage. Brain injuries can also result in uncontrolled bleeding and permanent brain damage. This is usually referred to as an Acquired Brain Injury.

According to the Foundation, there are two main types of stroke: those caused

by blood clots (ischemic stroke) and those caused by bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke).

When clots stop blood from flowing to the brain for a short time, a TIA (transient ischemic attack) or ‘mini-stroke’ can happen. Stroke can happen to anyone including babies and children (pediatric stroke).

Different parts of the brain control different functions. Learning what the parts of the brain do can help you understand why stroke can affect people so differently.

At the end of the day, it also has to be pointed out that we live in an age that is stressful and hurried – and that in itself can lead to all kinds of unhealthy lifestyle habits. Too much fast, processed food. Too little activity. Too much isolation as we just sometimes don’t feel like engaging with others after a crazy day at work.

But as the experts point out, habits like these can affect us in a myriad of different ways over time – including in the way of maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system.

West Coast can gain from strategic infrastructure spending The federal government is looking to hand out at least $5 billion for ‘shovel-ready’ infrastructure projects to stimulate the economy. Going straight to this queue, however, ignores an opportunity to look for projects that not only get the economy moving in the short term, but also provide long-term benefits.

With infrastructure spending the main focus of the government’s economic stimulus policy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hasn’t ruled out spending more than the $5 billion for infrastructure his election platform promised in the first year of a Liberal mandate. Trudeau is considering injecting $1 billion in infrastructure spending in Alberta and Saskatchewan alone.

Those investments need to be strategic, however, because investments in

CHRISTENSEN infrastructure that helps move goods will contribute to economic growth.

They also provide an incentive for private actors to make own investments.

Making strategic choices takes more effort than selecting funding recipients from the existing list of shovel-ready projects, yet it has the potential to reap greater benefits.

The Asia Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI), for example, was a collaborative planning endeavour that resulted in hundreds of millions

of dollars in private sector investment beyond the federal and provincial funding for trade-enabling infrastructure. The result was a combined investment of $7.5 billion since 2008 in port, road, rail and border infrastructure to improve the supply chain linking western Canada to Asia.

These investments built on a key geographic advantage of our West Coast ports: They are closer to Asia than U.S. ports are.

Prince Rupert is 68 hours closer to Shanghai than Los Angeles is; Port Metro Vancouver is 32 hours closer.

The payoff is greater than the local benefits of reduced traffic congestion and public amenities, and the regional benefits of more efficient transportation routes for western Canadian shippers.

Our western ports and

railways have become serious competitors with U.S. ports, like Seattle and Tacoma. In 2014, the Wall Street Journal declared that the fastest route to ship goods from Asia to the U.S. is through Canadian ports.

Even Disney ships the cargo it stocks in its U.S. Midwest stores through Prince Rupert.

Issues at U.S. ports like congestion, labour tensions, and a federal harbor maintenance tax have also prompted U.S. shippers to switch to Canadian ports.

As a result of investments to improve the efficiency and capacity of western Canada’s trade infrastructure network, once U.S. shippers make the move to our ports, they tend to remain long-term customers.

With volume at B.C.’s ports growing at a rate of nearly 4% higher than ports on the U.S. West

Increased business is obviously good for the ports, but the benefits are much more widespread.

B.C.’s two ports together contribute more than $1.3 billion in annual tax revenue to all levels of government – money that pays for health care, education, roads and other services we enjoy. In terms of direct jobs, the ports pay more than $3 billion in annual wages.

So, how can the Trudeau government find infrastructure projects like APGCI that provide the country both short- and long-term benefits?

Establishing a process that prioritizes infrastructure based on things like national interest, need and return-on-investment would be a good start. It’s not a revolutionary idea; Australia’s independent infrastructure agency does this and advises its government accordingly.

There may only be a couple months until Finance Minister Bill Morneau tables the Liberals’ first budget, but there are also more than 1,000 sharp public servants between the departments of Finance and Infrastructure Canada alone. Let’s hope they will be tasked with seeking out strategic investments, rather than simply printing off their list of shovel-ready projects.

City to begin on new affordable housing model within six months

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS This three-part series has examined the complexities of the current affordable housing shortage in Red Deer that has the potential to be an emerging crisis if it is not addressed.

The City of Red Deer is working towards a new model for tackling the issue of affordable housing.

The model the City is moving towards comes from a report from the Red Deer & District Community Foundation titled ‘Red Deer Housing Options Framework’.

“We are talking about two things in this new model - one is asset management and improving coordination of non-market housing development and maintenance,” said Sarah Cockerill, director of community services for the City. “We are also talking about wrap-around services (addiction services, income supports, etc.) that help maintain housing for people.

These things will create a totally integrated approach to housing delivery.”

She added it is timely that the City moves forward on this new affordable housing model.

Moving towards the new plan will be a benefit to the community as a whole.

Obviously there are many front line agencies, charities and government services which directly serve the vulnerable in our community, but what has become very clear to me particularly since becoming mayor, is the fact that local government, provincial government and the federal government all own pieces with respect to this issue. There is a lack of sense of who is accountable not only to meeting the existing needs, but to address root issues,” said Veer. “When I think of our aspiration to move to a governance model that is accountable, transparent, sustainable and user-friendly, this model is really our community’s key watershed moment where for us to get ahead of the issue. This is our best approach in order to address it.”

Moving forward, Cockerill said the City will begin discussions with stakeholders and partners and coordinate the development of what the new model will look like.

A look at the life of Rev. Walter George Brown Many nationally significant people have called Red Deer home. One such individual was Rev. W.G. Brown, the longtime minister of Knox Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately, as time has passed, the legacy of this impressive man is starting to be forgotten.

Walter George Brown was born on Sept. 6th, 1875, in Athelstan, Quebec. He attended McGill University in Montreal and originally planned to become a lawyer.

However, after earning of Bachelor of Arts degree with first class honours, he decided to pursue a career in the ministry instead.

He consequently attended the Presbyterian College in Montreal and won scholarships for his academic and public speaking achievements.

He was awarded his Bachelor of Divinity degree and was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church. During his time as a student missionary and as a young minister, he worked in the lumber camps of Northern Ontario. He often walked 50 to 60km a day to reach the remote communities.

In 1903, he went to work in the burgeoning mining towns of the West Kootenays. Again, he faced many challenges, including conducting services in the crude bunkhouses near the mines.

Nevertheless, he built up a successful mission field.

In 1904, he married Martha Rowat at Athelstan, Quebec. They were to have four children - Helen, Rhoda, Jack and Jean.

DAWE After finishing at a Master of Arts degree at McGill and completing a term of study at the United Free College in Glasgow, Scotland, he moved with his family to Red Deer in 1908.

Once again, Brown worked hard to build up his congregation. He particularly excelled at youth work. With his encouragement, the Presbyterian Young Peoples’ Society installed an ornamental cast-iron fountain on Ross Street in front of the post office. This fountain had an outlet for people, a step-up for children, a large trough for horses and a small basin for dogs.

The fountain was painted green each year for St. Patrick’s Day. The Presbyterian Church in Red Deer became a strong and vibrant organization. In 1913, the Presbyterians’ Alberta Ladies College opened on the East Hill. It offered affordable educational opportunities for young rural women from across Western Canada.

As the 20th Century progressed, there was increasing debate about merging the Presbyterian, Methodist and congregational churches. Brown became one of the leading opponents to the move. He

made countless speeches across the country to persuade the Presbyterians to remain a separate denomination. He was often quoted in the newspapers as ‘Brown of Red Deer’.

Despite his efforts, the federal government passed the enabling legislation to create the United Church of Canada in 1925.

Undaunted, Brown pushed hard to maintain a separate existence for Presbyterian churches. As a result, Central Alberta became a major centre in Canada where the new Presbyterian Church in Canada remained a strong force.

In 1925, Brown moved to Saskatoon where there had also been strong resistance to Church Union. He built up St. Andrew’s as the largest Presbyterian congregation in Saskatchewan. In 1931, he was elected moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly. During that time, he also made an extensive tour of Korea, China and Japan.

Brown was greatly distressed by the poverty brought on by the Great Depression and the dustbowl conditions of the Canadian prairies. On Dec. 18th, 1939, he was elected as the member of parliament for Saskatoon in a by-election for the United Reform Movement. In the 1940 general election, he was reelected with the support of both the C.C.F. (forerunner of the NDP) and the Conservative Party.

Brown died five days later on April 1st, 1940 of complications from a heart attack. He thereby

holds the unfortunate distinctions as having one

of the briefest terms as an MP (104 days) despite

victories in two separate elections.

Last week, officials continued to gain momentum by announcing a new partnership with NOVA Chemicals.

A number of dignitaries were on hand at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame last Wednesday when it was revealed that NOVA Chemicals had committed to a $2 million joint partnership with Red Deer College and the 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society.

The new partnership will provide support for the 2019 Canada Games Host Society and the construction of the Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness & Sport on Red Deer College’s main campus.

With patio season approaching, the City is looking for local musicians to take the stage at the Ross Street Patio Parties this summer.

Local musicians are invited to apply for a performance time at one of the four summer concerts. This concert series runs from June through September on the first Friday of each month, and features live music from all genres. This marks the fifth year of the Ross Street Patio Parties in Red Deer’s downtown core.

PERTUSSIS OUTBREAK DECLARED OVER Pertussis outbreaks in the Central and North zones of Alberta Health Services (AHS) have been declared over. Pertussis disease (whooping cough) activity in the two zones has decreased and no longer exceeds baseline levels. AHS will continue standard pertussis surveillance and followup work across all zones.

The pertussis outbreaks were declared in December 2014 in the Central Zone and last August in the North Zone.

The importance of routine childhood immunizations – including protecting against pertussis – continues to be stressed. Pertussis immunization is offered free of charge in Alberta. A series of doses is recommended starting at two months of age; again at four, six and 18 months; at four to six years; and again in Grade 9. Following this schedule ensures protection is complete and up-to-date. Albertans who have not received a dose of pertussis vaccine since turning 18 years of age are also eligible to receive a single additional dose in adulthood.

All Albertans can prevent illness and the spread of disease by following the recommended immunization schedule.

Albertans uncertain about their immunization history, or their child’s immunization history, are encouraged to contact their local public health office or Health Link at 811 to discuss immunization needs.

O-negative blood donations needed Canadian Blood Services is asking people to make regular blood donation a goal this year. Finding new O-negative donors in particular is a key challenge every year, since the demand for this blood type is much higher than its natural occurrence in the general public, officials have said.

While all blood types help patients, O-negative blood is in particular demand by hospitals because it is the only type compatible with all other blood types. O-negative blood is used in the most critical situations - for neonates; patients with compromised immune systems; and for trauma victims. When seconds count, someone’s life is on the line, and there’s no time to check blood type, hospital patients in an emergency situation can all receive O-negative blood.

Across the country, an estimated 7% of Canadians have O-negative blood, but this blood type represents close to 12% of all units sent to hospitals. Only about 41,000 of current 410,000 active donors are O-negative.

Canadian Blood Services is striving to increase the existing pool of O-negative donors to 50,000.

Canadian Blood Services is asking anyone who knows that their blood type is O-negative to book an appointment to donate as soon as possible at www. blood.ca. Those who are unsure what their blood type is and want to help can book an appointment to donate blood, and they’ll receive a donor card confirming their blood type in the mail after giving a donation.

In addition, in response to the recent global outbreak of the Zika virus, Canadian Blood Services is confirming that anyone who has travelled outside of Canada, the continental United States and Europe will now be temporarily ineligible to give blood for three weeks. This new waiting period is currently being implemented across the country and has taken full effect in all clinics.

While determining what the official deferral period should be, officials had asked people to postpone blood donation for at least a month after returning from travel outside these specified zones. Canadian Blood Services has officially changed the eligibility criteria to include a 21-day waiting period to mitigate the risk of the Zika virus entering the Canadian blood supply. This period ensures enough time has passed for the virus to be eliminated from a person’s blood-

stream, and begins the day a person returns to Canada.

“This new temporary deferral period will safeguard Canada’s blood supply against the Zika virus, and will also help us protect against other similar mosquito-borne viruses,” said Dr. Dana Devine, chief medical and scientific officer, Canadian Blood Services.

The 21-day waiting period also applies to cord blood and stem cell donors who have travelled to affected areas.

Officials added the risk of a Canadian donor transmitting the Zika virus to a blood recipient is very low.

The mosquito that carries the virus does not live in Canada due to the colder climate. There have been very few reported cases of Zika virus infection in travellers who acquired the virus abroad.

Officials also anticipate this ineligibility period will reduce the number of donors available to donate in the coming months.

They are therefore urging Canadians to donate before they travel to help make up for the anticipated shortfall. Canadian Blood Services officials also urge new and current donors who have not recently travelled outside of Canada, the continental United States and Europe, to book an appointment. New donors are critical to maintaining a healthy blood supply and ensuring patients continue to receive the safe and effective blood and blood products they need.

To be eligible to donate you must be at least 17 years of age, in general good health and feeling well on the day of donation.

New breast milk drop site in Red Deer

Red Deer now has a drop-site established for breastfeeding moms to donate their excess milk for babies in need.

Through a partnership with Alberta Health Services and the NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank, mothers can now drop off their excess milk to be collected, pasteurized and distributed in hospitals. The Johnstone Crossing Community Health Centre is the first location in Red Deer to offer a drop site for mothers’ breastfeeding milk.

This announcement marks the fifth milk drop site in Alberta under the NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank group.

“As Canada’s only community-based milk bank, we feel it’s our responsibility to provide these milk drops. Here, moms in the community of Red Deer can provide donor human milk to be donated to

Festival said each of the approved donor mothers goes through a thorough screening process, but most woman can apply to be a donor.

“Moms need to be healthy and be

breastfeeding their own baby. They need to have excess milk that can be supplied to other babies. They are screened and that screening involves a verbal interview over the phone and a blood test, among other tests,” Festival said.

“The mother would visit with her health care provider and once all this information is passed back to the milk bank where we review her file, we can accept her as a milk donor if she fits the criteria.”

Festival explained approved mothers will generally pump a little bit every day, freezing the milk until they have accumulated approximately 150 oz., or 4.5L of milk. Once the freezer at the Johnstone Crossing facility is full, a courier from Calgary will pick up the milk and bring it to the NorthernStar Mothers Milk lab.

“We’d hope to see thousands of donors the more the better,” Festival said.

“We find when we open up these milk drops there is more information getting

out to moms about how valuable their milk is for their own baby, as well as other babies in need whose mothers can’t provide milk.”

The milk is used most often for prematurely born babies. Festival explained the natural human mother’s milk is more easily accepted by the babies’ bodies compared to formula.

Gwen Ganske is a local mother who has contributed to the program, saying she wished she had the same options for her now seven month old son, Sullivan Woitowicz. Her son had been born premature.

“Supplementing my son with formula was not something I wanted to do, but was something that was kind of forced upon me because there wasn’t an option.

If we could get more moms to donate and increase the supply, it would be so much better for those babies,” Ganske said. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Fundraiser for education in Somalia to be held

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS The second annual Join Hands for Building a Better Future fundraiser will be held this month to raise money for education in Somalia.

Zainab Mohamoud has organized the fundraising gala to procure funds for the second portion of a school project built in her home village in Somalia.

On Feb. 27th at 6 p.m., guests will gather at Festival Hall to celebrate international foods, speakers, music and good company.

Tickets to the event are $40 per person, or a table of eight people for $300.

They can be purchased in person at The Hub on Ross, Little Star Restaurant or online at www.educationforsomalia.com, with pickup available at the door.

Tickets are encouraged to be purchased before the event, but a limited amount of tickets will be available at the entrance.

“Everything we raise at the gala will go towards the new project, which is a boarding facility for the kids. Our goal is to be able to host 200 more kids at the school who are coming from the surrounding area,” said Mohamoud.

“These kids don’t have anywhere to stay in the area so they can’t go to the school, but this would let them come to school. As well, they will be attending the school for free.”

The event boasts local keynote speaker Danielle Klooster, bringing her expertise in building community and business developments. She is involved with the Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance among several

other agencies and advocacy topics.

An international cuisine buffet has been sponsored by local chef David Bacon, with the addition of homemade cultural dishes from members of the Education for Somali Girls and Boys group. Live entertainment includes musical performances by local band Roses & Smoke, among other local artists. Cultural music and dances will be presented throughout the event.

Mohamoud said the Education for Somali Girls and Boys group is currently working towards becoming a non-profit organization so that they can issue charitable tax receipts for future donors.

“We have seven board members in the community and a lot of volunteers.

teering their time for the cause,” Mohamoud said.

“With this gala, we’re going to update what we’ve done since the first gala and raise money to set up the school expansion. My goal for the entire project is $100,000 and this is a way to start off our fundraising before I go to the U.S. and Europe,” she explained.

“We also have quite a bit of interest from people within Africa who want to invest some money to-

wards the second project.”

Mohamoud said they are hoping to sell at least another 100 tickets to help their fundraising goal for the gala.

“I know there are a lot of events going on in the community, but I’m hoping to get at least $10,000 or $15,000 raised- that would make me very happy. However, if we don’t quite get that I won’t be disappointed because we’re all aware of the economic situation we’re in,”

MAN LEFT AT HOSPITAL DIES

The Red Deer RCMP along with Calgary Major Crimes Unit are investigating a suspicious death of a middle aged man who was dropped off at the Red Deer Hospital on Feb. 13th around 9:30 p.m.

The middle aged man was dropped off at the hospital by unknown individuals and pronounced deceased shortly after.

Police are seeking assistance for information in relation to the location of a 1998 Grey Jeep Grand Cherokee with AB license plate BNW 1124. They are also looking to identify who was driving this vehicle on Feb. 13th and any passengers in the vehicle.

RCMP RECOVER STOLEN PROPERTY On Feb. 9th a search warrant was executed by the Innisfail RCMP on a property in the Town. During the search of the outside of the residence, property belonging to a victim of a residential break and enter in Lacombe County was recovered.

On Feb. 10th, a second search warrant was executed by the Blackfalds and Innisfail RCMP at the same property in

Innisfail. In the interior of the residence, further items of a sentimental and historical value linked to the same break and enter in Lacombe County along with several items related to a break and enter at a residence in Innisfail were recovered.

Mark Allen Woodcock of Innisfail has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and 13 counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

ARREST MADE AFTER ROBBERY Michael Wayne Demas has been arrested after a downtown pharmacy was robbed on Feb. 10th and the suspect threatened to stab staff with a needle that he claimed was infected.

At about 2 p.m., the suspect entered the Ross Street IDA Pharmacy and wielded a needle at pharmacy staff, stating he had Hepatitis C and threatening to stab staff with an infected needle unless he was given morphine. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of drugs.

Demas has been charged with two counts of robbery with a weapon, failing to comply with a probation ordere ande possession of a prohibited substance.

WANTED MAN ARRESTED A 22-year-old Red Deer man was arrested seven days after he fled from the Red Deer RCMP in

by Erin Fawcett a stolen truck, having rammed two police vehicles, a garbage truck and two civilian vehicles.

On Feb. 2nd at 4 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious truck in a parking lot at 60th St. and 51st Ave. RCMP confirmed the truck had been stolen out of Red Deer the day before. Police laid two tire deflation devices at the parking lot exit before approaching the parked truck, which then accelerated toward the police officers, narrowly missing striking them. The truck drove over the tire deflation devices then turned toward the police cruisers, ramming two of them and a waste disposal truck that was also in the parking lot.

The truck fled east on 60th St. then north onto 50th Ave., driving on two flattened tires.

The driver refused to stop for police, running a red light at 61st St. and colliding with two civilian vehicles that were stopped at the light. Police did not initiate a pursuit for public safety reasons. Fortunately, no one was injured in this series of collisions and near-collisions.

The stolen Ford F350 was located abandoned a short time later in an alley near Newton Cresc. However, RCMP identified the driver of the truck almost immediately in the course of their investigation and issued multiple warrants for his arrest.

Edmonton Police Service arrested him on Feb. 9th.

CHEERS PUB ROBBED Red Deer RCMP are investigating an armed robbery that took place at Cheers Pub in Riverside Meadows Feb. 3rd and are looking for public assistance to identify the man who wielded a firearm at staff.

At about 4:15 p.m., the suspect entered cheers pub carrying a handgun and demanded cash from the staff.

He was seen getting into the passenger side of a white astro van that was waiting outside, idling with the passenger door open. The van was later found abandoned in the alley behind 59th ave. In the Highland Green neighbourhood; it had been stolen from a parking lot in gasoline alley on Jan. 30th.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 5’10” – 5’11” tall with a slim build.

He was wearing a dark hoodie, dark mask and dark sunglasses, carrying a black leather bag

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575.

FIRE CAUSED BY EXTENSION CORDS A minor incident at a local hotel on Feb. 3rd could have been much worse had it not happened during regular business hours. A café at the Sheraton Hotel had many appliances plugged into an extension cord, overloading the cord and causing a minor fire.

Red Deer Emergency Services was called around 3:45 p.m. last Wednesday. The incident created some minor smoke and scorched a nearby wall, causing about $500 in damages.

EMS says a number of businesses wrongly treat extension cords as permanent wiring, when they are not intended to be, and run the risk of major property damage and injury.

Also, EMS recommends businesses remove any extension cords acting as permanent wiring, and restrict such cords to short-term uses. Businesses should also ensure they’re using the right kind of cord for the job, and consider hiring a qualified electrician to add additional circuits or outlets if needed.

PROPERTY SEIZED The Priority Crimes Task Force recently executed two unrelated search warrants on properties in Red Deer and seized numerous stolen snowmobiles, trailers and ATVs as well as numerous firearms.

The task force executed the first search warrant on a property on 55th Ave. in the West Park neighbourhood on Jan. 25th.

Stolen items recovered included

three ATVs, a snowmobile and two utility trailers. These items traced back to thefts out of Three Hills, Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House. A number of smaller items seized were also traced back to thefts out of Penhold and the Rimbey area.

RCMP continue to investigate, and charges are pending against the 35-year-old Red Deer man who rented the property.

The second, unrelated investigation began on Jan. 27th when Blackfalds RCMP tracked a stolen snowmobile to a residence located in the area of Township Road 391 and RR 273; the Priority Crimes Task Force executed a search warrant at that property later the same day, seizing stolen property that included five snowmobiles, an ATV, a dirt bike and three trailers, and several stolen passports, credit cards and pieces of identification. The stolen property in this file has been linked to criminal activity in Red Deer, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Sylvan Lake and Bentley.

Police also seized nine rifles and nine shotguns, one of which was loaded, as well as ammunition and small amounts of drugs.

Robert Allan Brown, 30, of Blackfalds has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Charges are pending against a 35-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, both of Red Deer County, and RCMP continue to investigate.

This year, the conference will feature a wide variety of topics that families can choose to attend based on their needs and interest. The event take place at Red Deer College, Cenovus Centre on Feb. 27th, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. The event costs $20 for moms, with girls gaining free entry.

“Depending on the family dynamics and issues people are facing, some of the workshops might not be relevant at that time, so people are able to pick something that is more interesting to them right now,” said chair of the event, Dianne Macaulay.

Due to the seriousness of some of the topics, this year’s event will be open to young ladies aged 12-14.

The topics include information on selfharm, online and social media safety, resiliency, safe spaces to heal from abuse and healthy families in mind and body.

“In the past we’ve had the day set up where everyone who attended was in the same sessions. We would have one or two sessions in the morning, and one or two in the afternoon. This year, the participants are going to start off with an absolutely amazing keynote speaker - Karen Klassen, an author from Calgary. She’s going to bring everybody together, lift our spirits and give us some positive vibes for the morning,” Macaulay said.

“Some of our other morning sessions include a presentation on behalf of the Sexual Assault Centre on proper texting and social media topics. We talk about

boyfriends and girlfriends sending inappropriate photos, and the moral and legal reasons why those shouldn’t be sent or received.”

Macaulay said another topic to be presented would include a discussion on self-harm.

“Unfortunately self-harm is an epidemic that isn’t going away or getting any better so we want to talk about tips to deal with it, signs of self-harm and the ways people are self-harming. We want to show some better ways to deal with stress and depression,” she said.

Macaulay assured the entire day would still be a fun, uplifting experience for the guests. She said although some of the topics are serious, the time for mothers and their children to get together is always a great experience, and one they hope to bring a lot of families into.

“We’re really hoping to fill the seats and

get the information we have out into the community. We’re hoping to have 200 people attend, as we do have the space this year at RDC. We’d like everyone to register by February 21st, because we will be providing lunch with the catering crew at RDC and need to let them know how many people to expect,” she said.

“All day long, there will be a really fun photo booth as well. It’s got the fun backgrounds, lots of props and lots of costumes. We’re going to have some movement activities with Alberta Health Services throughout the day to kind of break up the sessions. This year there isn’t any crafts or dancing, but the atmosphere is still going to be uplifting and fun.”

Will a tax on sugar cure obesity?

Thirty-five years ago I warned readers about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption and labelled sugar the ‘white devil.’ The sugar industry was not amused, and complained to the College of Physicians and Surgeons that I should be disciplined. I won, after a trying, difficult battle.

How things change!

Five countries currently have a sugar tax. Now the British are debating the merits of a 20% tax on high sugar products to help fight the epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Why this change of heart? Dr. Simon Capewell, UK vice-president of health policy, says, “Public opinion on a sugar tax is shifting. The majority of parents are angry that their children are being made fat.� He adds, “It’s a matter of when, not if it’s going to happen.�

Dr. John Yudkin, professor of physiology at London University, reported in 1972 that sugar (sucrose) is dangerous as well as sweet. He showed as the intake of sugar increased worldwide, so did the number of people suffering from heart disease.

In another experiment, prisoners in a locked ward were given different diets with and without sucrose.

This proved that whenever sucrose was added, it increased the level of blood cholesterol. Can you imagine the hue and cry of libertarians if this experiment were tried today!

The sugar bowl is not

JONES the main problem. It’s the hidden sugar in so many products. For instance, the publication Consumer Reports on Health says, “Who would think that one slice of whole wheat bread would contain almost one teaspoon of sugar?� It adds that food companies toss added sugar into almost 75% of packaged foods, including nutritious sounding names such as instant oatmeal.

So can you lose weight by decreasing the amount of dietary sugar? In one study, 43 obese children ate the same amount of calories, but decreased added sugars from 28% of their daily calories to 10% for nine days. There was no change in weight, but their cholesterol, triglyceride, fasting blood sugar and insulin levels all dropped. Their weight remained the same, as the amount of calories did not change. No one should ever forget the word ‘calorie’.

But does a tax on sugary drinks guarantee less obesity and Type 2 diabetes?

According to a Mexican study, a tax had no effect.

Why? It helped to decrease consumption of sugary drinks, but you may have guessed it, Mexicans sim-

ply switched to other products, ending up with the same number of calories.

A lose/ lose experiment.

I’m no friend of the sugar industry. Soft drinks are really liquid candy. But in all fairness to it, obesity results from too many calories in all types of food.

I see this when I travel to the U.S. and see restaurants with signs advertising ‘All you can eat’.

My patients must have become tired of me saying, “Buy a bathroom scale and step on it every day.� Of

course this is not the beall-and-end-all solution to obesity. But you never have to face the surprise that you’ve gained 40lbs!

One thing is certain. You need to be a nutritionist to understand the sugar labels on food products.

But it would help if labels showed what we all understand, what a teaspoon of sugar looks like.

Maybe some people would then think twice about consuming too much sugar when a cola can contains a picture of

9 tsp. of sugar, a chocolate bar (6 tsp.), a bowl of raisin bran or frosty flakes (9 tsp.), sponge cake (8 tsp.), and even a banana (4 tsp.)

The fact is that, unless you have been living on Mars, you don’t have to be a nutritionist to know that rich desserts, cookies and other goodies like ice cream contain large amounts of sugar. And unless you learn to say ‘no’ more often than you say ‘yes’, you will never beat obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

The sad news is that calories do count. In case you believe that by exercising, you can say ‘yes’ more often than ‘no’, you’ll find calories always win. It will happen whether there is a sugar tax or not.

ENTERTAINMENT Singer George Canyon plays Cowboys this week

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS On the heels of his latest CD release I Got This, country singer George Canyon makes a City stop Feb. 19th at Cowboys.

The project marks the 11th full-length release for Canyon in a career that spans more than two decades and boasts several gold-certified records including his debut Classics and the Richard Marx-produced Better Be Home Soon.

Canyon, born and raised in Nova Scotia, picked up the guitar and sang at a very early age.

It was also in his local church where he honed his musical talents, learning hymns and stories that would inspire both his life and music.

“There was always music around me at home,” he recalls of his early days. “The uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents - everybody just had a certain musical element to them. And growing up in the Maritimes, it was just the thing to do. There was always that very relaxed, comfortable, musical setting.”

He hit the road in his late teens, effectively launching his musical journey. And later on, he catapulted onto the country scene in 2004 on Nashville Star – a competition similar to the American Idol format.

As for I’ve Got This, Canyon said it had been awhile since he had focused so squarely on a musical project of his own.

“We took over two years and just really dug into writing and recording music and seeing what was working and what wasn’t,” he explains of the disc’s production. “I had fun - and that’s what I wanted to get back to - the reason that I make music - to enjoy it,” he added. “That’s really what the last two years have been about and that’s what this record has been all about to me.”

It’s also been a season of doing a bit of reminiscing, he said, pointing out that he’s been in the industry for 26 years now.

“I think a little bit of that might have rubbed off with this record, which I’m happy with,” he said.

“I was born in 1970, so I grew up with every kind of music you can imagine. The 80s was really influential. I still listen to it constantly.

“I know in the process of writing for this record, there are a couple of songs that are fullout 80s songs. They’re not on this record but hang on - there’s going to be another record following shortly behind this one,” he added with a laugh. “We’re not stopping!

what the next few years are going to hold musically for me, because we aren’t going to stop we’ll just keep given’ er.”

As to production duties on I Got This, those went to singer Johnny Reid and Canyon came onboard as co-producer as well.

“Jeff Johnson co-produced with Johnny for the other six tunes as well.”

Reid and Canyon have been friends for years and have written a few songs together, but had never collaborated in a production capacity before this project.

“We have such a laugh when we are together,” said Canyon.

“We had such fun - in fact, we were in tears from laughing most of the time. Not only did we co-produce, we did a bunch of writing for it too so we had a blast right from the get-go. Johnny is so musical - in my opinion, he is a savant. He’s probably one of the best singers I’ve ever gotten to listen to live.

He’s got everything.

“It’s also so much fun co-producing. I can sit in a studio and produce, but I like co-producing because you can try out different things, laugh and have a good visit,” he said.

Canyon is also a spokesper-

son for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 14, Canyon, a young air cadet at the time, was told he would have to forgo his ambitions to serve as a pilot in the Canadian Air Force.

Years later he would learn to manage his disease through diet, lifestyle and the use of insulin pump technology. In 2009, Canyon passed a series of medical tests and as a result of this was able to obtain his pilot’s license.

In early 2008 he also was recognized for all his philanthropic work in support of the Canadian troops and was appointed Honourary Colonel for the Canadian Air Force at 14 Wing Greenwood in Nova Scotia.

Later that year, he took his personal story and his own plane across Canada and organized talks and concerts to inspire youngsters with Type 1 diabetes with his inspiring message, a project he named ‘The Sky’s Not The Limit’.

As mentioned, the past few years have indeed been busy ones - in 2008 Canyon and pop/ rock icon Richard Marx signed on to produce Canyon’s What I Do album which yielded seven hit singles including Just Like You, the album’s first single, which was written for Canyon’s son, Kale.

Marx and Canyon also teamed up again to write and record songs for the 2011 disc Better Be Home Soon.

Meanwhile, Canyon was recently inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame.

“It’s still a bit of a shocker - it’s cool. I was so honoured. But there was a part of me that said, I don’t deserve this. I’m only 45 - there are all these wonderful artists and musicians there up in their older years, and they’ve played a lifetime of music in our industry. Cornerstone Youth Theatre presents Honk!

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Cornerstone Youth Theatre is set to stage their next production, Honk!, an award-winning, fresh twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s story of The Ugly Duckling.

Performances run Feb. 26th-27th and March 4th-5th at New Life Fellowship Church (20 Kelloway Close). Evening performances run at 7 p.m. with matinees on Feb. 27th and March 5th at 3 p.m.

Since it first hatched in 1993 Stiles & Drewe’s musical Honk! has winged its way around the world. Winner of multiple awards, including the 2000 Oliver Award for Best Musical, this heart-warming celebration of being different is sure to delight audiences of all ages with its sparkling wit and memorable score.

Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling suckling brothers and sisters.

The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite his mother’s protective flapping. The little fowl finds himself on an adventure of self-discovery all the while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry cat.

Along the way Ugly meets a whole flock of unique characters and finds out being different is not a bad thing to be.

“It is just such a fun musical. The music

is extremely well-written and clever and the kids are having a great time performing it - it moves really quickly and it has a lot of really fun characters who are finding their muses in 1950s television stars,” said Stephanie Orr, artistic director with Cornerstone Youth Theatre. “The young man who is playing the cat is playing it very much like James Dean. It’s really fun to watch them - it’s like I Love Lucy meets Green Acres.”

A total of 58 cast members are a part of the upcoming show, and Orr said organizers have it down to a science in terms of getting the most out of rehearsals and time with the kids.

“There are a lot of moving parts in this show, which is just cute as all get out, there are a lot of little kids that have feature parts - they are so cute and so talented,” said Orr. “Our cast ranges in age from eight to 18 in this show so there is a lot of mentoring that goes on - the older kids helping the younger kids with their parts. As our kids do more and more theatre, the process gets easier and easier because everybody really helps everyone else as a team. It’s pretty fantastic to be able to see that happen.”

As for including Honk! in this year’s line up for Cornerstone Youth Theatre, Orr said it’s about giving the students an opportunity to learn and grow.

Stettler-based band to play at The Vat

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS A Central Alberta band is set to take a Red Deer stage this coming weekend.

WheelHouse plays The Vat Feb. 20th at 10 p.m.

The Stettler-based band first got together in 2011 and includes Cindy Liebe (lead singer), Wayne Dickie (drummer), Charles Lacroix (bass) and Trent Shoemaker (guitar).

“We want to play those songs that everyone loves and everyone remembers,” said Dickie. “We are a classic rock band and one of the things that we really wanted to do when we started this was to absolutely make sure that every song is an anthem.

We have three criteria - it has to be an anthem, you have to be able to dance and party to it and we have to be able to do it justice. You only have four hours to connect with your audience out there so we want every song to be that anthem so they can connect with that point back in the day.”

He added he has many favourites that

WheelHouse performs, but some of his top bands to cover include Trooper, April Wine, Colin James and The Stampeders, among others. “Whenever we can get our hands on a good Canadian song, boy I tell you, we’re all over it.”

For Dickie, music has always been something of a hobby and he is thrilled to be able to continue to take the stage.

“When I was 13-yearsold my brother took me across the street to a neighbour that had a set of drums. As soon as I saw that I was hooked, that was it for me. I switched from playing the saxophone in the jazz band to the drums.

I’ve never looked back.

For me, it started really early in life and I’ve been lucky enough to keep playing pretty much right through,” he said. “Terry Cave (one of the owners of The Vat) and I started playing when I was 15 or 16-years-old, so it’s really neat that I can go back and play for those guys.”

As for getting up on stage, Dickie said one of his favourite aspects is seeing the crowd enjoying what the band is doing.

“That is why we do this,” he said. “Honestly we

want that - that’s the feeling that we go out there to get whether there’s 15 people in a crowd, or 150, as long as they are enjoying it - that is everything for us. It’s thrilling.

“For me, I get to play my favourite songs with my friends and that’s fun.

It’s a lot of hard work too, but it’s fun when it pays off and you have the crowd there and they are in that same moment it’s almost indescribable. I can’t imagine what those guys feel playing those coliseums.”

Looking ahead, Dickie said recording an album is something the band has their sights set on.

“We’ve had some really good positive feedback on what we’re doing. We put a little more modern twist to our cover songs, but we still honour the original.

We are seriously considering releasing something that would be a compilation of our remakes of classic songs. I think it’s time to look at getting something together now that is going to be a great treasure for us to listen to in the future.”

SPORTS RDC Queens’ co-captain set for final season

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS Kelsey Tymkow has been a volleyball player for most of her life.

“I started when I was 12-years-old. It was just one of the sports that I actually liked because I hated contact sports,” said the 21-year-old Edmonton native, who is now in her second year playing for the Red Deer College Queens volleyball team.

In her two years with the Queens, Tymkow has worked her way up from a first sub player to a leadership role on the team. She is one of RDC’s captains and is now a starter on the team.

“I love it. It’s honestly been one of the best experiences of my whole volleyball career,” she said of her time playing at RDC, during which she has helped the team win an ACAC championship and a national title.

She also recorded 211 kills in 86 games last season.

Tymkow started her competitive volleyball career playing with the Northern Alberta Volleyball Club in Edmonton. She played there until her final year of high school, when she moved onto join the Pandas Volleyball Club.

“I just grew up doing that,” she said.

After graduating high school, Tymkow enrolled at NAIT in an effort to get a business diploma in accounting.

“One of my coaches that coached me (in my club years) ended up getting the head coaching job my first year at NAIT and he phoned me and said, ‘Hey I want you to come play’,” she said. That coach was Lorne Sawula, who had coached Tymkow at Aspire Volleyball, an organization that offers private volleyball lessons to players in Edmonton.

She played for the Ooks for two seasons before she enrolled at RDC at the beginning of last year.

The Kinesiology major said it’s been fun to play against her former team on the court. “It’s competitive because you definitely want to win. Last year, in the quarterfinals of provincials, we played them and there was definitely some external motivators out there,” she said.

So far this season, Tymkow has helped the Queens 13-7 record, contributing 130 kills in 56 games playing on the left side.

“It started a little rough at the start but I think we’re finally coming together as a team. We’re learning the way that each of us plays and we’re learning each other

But, like all good stories, Tymkow’s time as a Queen is drawing to a close. She’ll be graduating from RDC at the end of the school year with plans to continue her education at the University of Alberta.

“I could have had one (year left) but Talbot (Walton) and I have talked about it and I think it’s just better for me, educational-wise, to move on to the U of A, so this year I’ll be graduating,” she said, adding she has mixed emotions about leaving the Queens and the ACAC. “I’m excited and nervous - excited because I get to go back home but a little

sad because I don’t get to finish out my five years. I love Talbot and all the girls, so it would have been nice to stay, but there’s nothing more that I can take.”

She also noted she doesn’t think she’ll be pursing volleyball at the university level.

It’s not all sad, though. Later this month, Red Deer College will be hosting the 2016 ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship, so Tymkow will have the opportunity to go out with a bang. “The last hurrah,” she laughed.

When asked whether the knowledge this would be her last year affected her play, Tymkow said it’s allowed her to leave it all on the court.

“I think it’s allowed me to play more free. I think I’ve played with the same intensity the whole way through because you always want to do well, regardless of whether you’re coming back or not. You want to leave whatever you have on the court at that time. But it’s definitely allowed me to play more free and just leave everything out there and have a reason to,” she said, adding her time in a Queens’ uniform has allowed her to grow both as a player and a person.

Tymkow will take to the court at the RDC gym for her last regular season home game as a Queen this Friday when the Queens host the SAIT Trojans.

Rebels face tough losses this past weekend

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It was a tough weekend for the Red Deer Rebels.

The Rebels, who currently sit in second place in the WHL’s East Central Division, dropped both of their games last weekend, including a 4-1 decision to the Calgary Hitmen (31-21-3), who as of Tuesday morning, were just six points back of the Rebels in the standings.

“Obviously getting a goose egg this weekend - zero points. We’re not happy about it at all,” said Rebels Head Coach and GM Brent Sutter after Saturday night’s 5-2 loss to the Tri-City Americans (27-26-3) at the Centrium.

In three games last week, the Rebels posted a 1-2 record, including a win over the Medicine Hat Tigers at home on Wednesday night and losses against the

Hitmen and Americans on Friday and Saturday respectively.

“You can’t give up four goals and five goals in games and think you’re going to win.

You’ve got to shut it down, you’ve got to defend better, you’ve got to take more pride in that,” Sutter said, adding that while the second game was better than the first in the weekend, the team still wasn’t playing to the level that they expect.

Friday night’s road game was an example of a game where the team didn’t produce as well as they have been all season.

The Rebels were outshot 41-30 during the game. By contrast they outshot the Americans 37-24 in Saturday’s contest.

“For six minutes tonight we played like we did last night for 60 minutes. We were awful in our own zone, we had a lack of communication, we didn’t finish any checks, we were terrible around the front of our net. They got four goals on us in six-

plus minutes,” Sutter said after Saturday’s performance.

“I thought we played about 54 good minutes and six minutes that ended up costing us tonight. Little things that need to get done and be executed each and every night and tonight it cost us,” added Alternate Captain Haydn Fleury.

Saturday’s game also brought more bad news for the Rebs, as starting goaltender Rylan Toth left the game during the second intermission with an apparent injury.

“We’ll see. It’s not good, but we’ll see where it goes,” Sutter said.

Toth’s injury adds to a long list of injured key players for the Rebels including forward Conner Bleackley and defenseman Josh Mahura.

As of Saturday night, Sutter had already made a call to Rebs’ third goalie Dawson Weatherill, a Red Deer native, to come in and cover the backup goaltender duties.

“It’s unfortunate. It’s just the way it’s gone this year with our injuries, we’ve had to battle through. It’s certainly not a position we want to get an injury in but, at the same time, there’s nothing you can do,” said Sutter, adding that defending will be a key position for the team from this point on.

It wasn’t all bad news for Red Deer, though. Newcomer Luke Philp made his long-awaited debut with the Rebels on Friday night, playing his first game since Nov. 21st. He also picked up his first point in a Rebels uniform on Saturday with an assist on Adam Musil’s first period goal.

Philp was acquired by the Rebels at the trade deadline but has been sidelined with an ankle injury.

Local athletes fare well in Alberta Winter Games

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Alberta Winter Games kicked off in Medicine Hat over the weekend and Red Deer was well represented.

The annual province-wide competition features more than 2,500 youth athletes competing in a variety of events, including skiing, hockey, archery, volleyball, and boxing as well as many others.

More than 80 athletes from Red Deer and 250 from Zone 4 made the trip down to the Hat to compete in the Games, which are hosted in a different city around the province every year.

“I think our athletes are representing the City of Red Deer and Central Alberta really well. They’re competitive and they’re great kids.

Our coaches are doing a good job in terms of making

sure they’re good representatives, not just on the court but off the court,” said Miles Kydd, who served as Zone 4’s Chef de Mission during the Games, which ran from Saturday through Tuesday.

“In their interactions with the volunteers I’ve heard nothing but positive comments.”

“The ASDC’s mission is to help Central Alberta’s emerging athletes and it is those same athletes that are here competing in Medicine Hat. It is our hope that we can partner with all the athletes, coaches, and sport programs to help all athletes achieve their sporting potential,” he said.

As of Tuesday morning, Zone 4 sat in sixth place out of eight in the medal count, garnering six gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals, but Kydd said they’ve been competitive throughout the weekend.

“We’ve got our girls’ hockey playing for a bronze medal right now, boys and girls volleyball are both to play for bronze medals here.

Our archery kids are looking to add to their medal count yet. There’s maybe 12 medals — bronze, silver, gold

— up for grabs in archery and our team has won six of them so far.”

Bringing home gold medals for Red Deer were Zachary Kosack and Ethan Mcdonald in cross country skiing, Amelia Murray and Kaitlyn Wiley in archery, Kia Risling in synchronized swimming and Devin Saunders in biathlon.

Options for adding character to your home When clients are looking for a home or considering designing or building, they all breathe the same word – character.

Everyone wants character, yet we seem unsure as to how to input that into a room or a design plan. What constitutes character in a room or a home? What features are necessary to include in our plans to infuse character into a space? Can you only get character in older homes?

The options to add character are endless, fun and generally inexpensive. Next time you have opportunity to visit a tea house or a B&B in an older home, take note or pictures of the items that charm you and see if you can’t insert some of those elements into your space. Lighting is the easy fix; it is a quick project to replace a few lighting fixtures to something with more old world charm and rustic finishes especially in a dining area or over a sink vanity. Don’t overlook the option of wainscoting around walls in dining rooms and bathrooms. Raising this wall treatment up to a 6’ height gives a lovely old world feel and protects your walls in busy areas such as boot rooms and powder rooms, this also raises the eye and helps the room feel taller.

Character is achievable in even the simplest of homes. Take note, and treat yourself to an afternoon at a charming inn to see which character elements you would like to add into your home. This is one of the most stress free, enjoyable projects you will undertake and you won’t believe how satisfied you will be with the results.

Knowing what to believe in today’s housing market If you’ve paid any attention to the news you know that the Canadian housing market and the economy are hot topics.

But can you really trust what you read in the media, specifically headlines?

Headlines are written to catch your attention, they are designed to hook you in, to keep you reading the news. A Google search for housing news in 2015 brings up the following titles:

• “A Housing Correction is likely to happen this summer” In early January of 2015, the Financial Post published an article titled, “The Deutsche Bank reveals seven reasons why Canada is in serious trouble’, starting with a 63% overvalued housing market.”

Despite the predictions of doom and gloom, in actual fact, Canadian real estate increased in value year

over year and the supposed bubble didn’t burst.

According to the Canadian Real Estate Association, 2015 saw a 12% overall increase in housing prices with Vancouver gaining 18.9%.

Will the headlines be any different in 2016? Probably not. A scan will tell you that the housing market is out of control, the loonie is depressed, you can’t give oil away, foreign buyers are to blame for all our problems

and household budgets are being thrown out of whack by skyrocketing grocery bills (more about how to fix that later). So how do you find certainty in these uncertain times?

Do your research and don’t let fear drive your decision making. The market will be the market, all you can do is focus on what you can control, and that is ‘you’ and your financial situation.

• Get pre-approved.

Regardless of your financial situation, if you are considering buying a property, the first step is to always talk with your mortgage professional and get a pre-approval. Clearly outlining your income, credit, assets, and liabilities ahead of time will allow you to know your purchasing power and shop with confidence.

• Turn off the news.

Connect with local real estate professionals instead.

Why? Because real estate is local. Asking the question ‘What is the Canadian real estate market like?’ is similar to asking ‘What’s the weather like in Canada today?’

The best way to get information about your local market is to talk with a local professional.

• Don’t try to time the market. Rather than allowing the market to dictate when to purchase a property, make that decision based on what’s best for you, when it’s best for you.

Unless you are looking to purchase an investment property, you are buying a place to live in and your home has function well beyond being an investment.

• Be honest about what you can afford. Just because you can qualify for the mortgage, doesn’t mean you can actually afford it. There are many reasons this might be the case, and they all involve extra spending beyond what is considered on the mortgage application. Don’t forget about costs associated with child care, sporting activities, commuting to work or the increased cost of groceries (again, more about that soon) just to name a few.

• Take a payment test drive. If the property you are looking to purchase will end up costing you more per month than your current arrangement, take your new payment for a test drive. Try living within those means for a while before making the move!

The truth is, if you listen to the headlines, there will never be a good time to buy! You will always feel as though you missed your opportunity, that it’s too late, or worse yet, that as soon as you do decide to pull the trigger, the entire Canadian housing market will come collapsing down around you. That’s simply not the case.
