The marketplace is flooded with cheaper made products and it pays to educate yourself on how the different products are made before you buy. Not all products are created equal and shopping by colour and price, will usually prove to be a mistake in the long run. Every colour will look different under different light sources, so the same floor will look different in the livingroom than in the bedroom. Quality is more important than colour. It is important to understand the different characteristics and limitations of the products you purchase in order to get the best value from your flooring investment. Although laminate flooring is generically referred to as ‘click together’ floors, there are hundreds of different types of locking systems and they vary greatly in quality. Our Uniboard Premium Quality laminate flooring is manufactured right here in Canada. You should maintain a stable environment in your home to help eliminate buckling and gapping issues with your wood floors. The humidity in your home should be in the range of 40% - 60% for laminate, engineered and hardwood flooring. Seasonal changes in humidity have a huge effect on wood based products and it is important to understand this fact before it creates a problem. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Proper sub-floor preparation is the foundation of a quality installation. Most people who install flooring themselves overlook the importance of sub-floor preparation and are in a hurry to get the job done. You should check for level prior to starting your installation. Once the floor is laid you cannot go back and fix the problem without removing the floor and starting all over. Different products require different care and maintenance. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer in order to keep your warranty intact. Relying on old habits or misinformation is not an excuse if something happens to your new floor due to misuse or neglect. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for acclimation, installation and cleaning. With proper care and maintenance your new floors will last for many years.

They also carry transitions, baseboard, casing and crown moulding. “We only carry top quality products that are backed by the best warranties in the industry and we choose our suppliers carefully to ensure the best possible value to our customers” adds Saunders. Being the local “Uniboard
Authorized Dealer” and buying direct from the factory in Quebec, allows Laminate Warehouse to offer unbeatable value on Canadian made laminate. “We sell our Canadian made laminate for a lower price than most retailers sell inferior products from overseas. The Uniboard line is a fantastic product that has an AC4 Wear Layer for maximum durability and a Waxed Edge for moisture protection and it carries a 35 Year Residential Warranty” says Saunders. Uniboard offers core board panels that are ECC Certified, Carb Compliant, Floor Score Certified (FSC) and contribute to LEED points. “We are very proud to have been chosen by Uniboard to represent their line of quality products that are made right here in Canada” adds Saunders.
“We believe in what we sell and how we sell it” Shayne Saunders The ECC certification (Eco-Certified Composite) is a voluntary standard developed by the Composite Panel Association (CPA). To be ECC certified, the mill must first meet the strict emission requirement
of CARB Phase 2 for composite wood products. They must then comply with at least three of the five CPA requirements. The five criteria are: Carbon Footprint, Local Resources, Recycled Content, Sustainability and Responsible Wood Sourcing. The Uniboard Mont-Laurier mill has met all five of these requirements! With over 200 different types of laminate flooring to choose from Laminate Warehouse is sure to have the right product to fit any budget and the right colour to satisfy even the most discerning consumer. They carry top quality factory direct products from all around the world including Canada, Germany and the USA. “How a product is made is more important than where it is made and we take an educated approach to selling all the products we carry” claims Saunders. The flooring experts at Laminate Warehouse are happy to show consumers the different types of products that are available so they can make an informed decision without any high pressure sales tactics that are commonplace in many retail stores. Not only does Laminate Warehouse carry top quality products that are easy to install for the do-it-yourself customer,
they also offer professional installation by uniformed, licensed & insured installers that are covered by WCB. “The big advantage with our installation teams is consistent results. Our installers work directly for us, so satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.” says Saunders. For the people who prefer to do the job themselves, they offer sound advice and free on-site consultations. They will even lend you the tools to get the job done right. Laminate Warehouse currently has locations in Maple Ridge, Langley and Chilliwack and more expansion is in the works. With a solid reputation for treating customers right it is no surprise that they continue to grow. “We are currently looking for the right individuals to open stores in other areas and look forward to helping them build their own successful businesses” says Saunders. Visit a showroom near you, and see how premium products, guaranteed pricing, expert advice and quality workmanship have helped to establish Laminate Warehouse as a leader in the flooring industry. Entertaining since 1969
Consumer
by Greg Sheppard
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
If your front load washing machine is developing a musty smell there is a solution. Affresh tablets can be used to deodorize and disinfect your washer. Many machines have a dedicated cycle for this, but if yours doesn’t, just use a tablet with the longest, highest temperature cycle available. It also helps to keep the door open a crack if possible when the washer is not in use. BUYER BEWARE: Many traditionally respected TV brands are being marketed by offshore manufacturers. Names like RCA, Hitachi and Toshiba no longer mean what they used to. Be sure to do your research before getting burned by a “good deal”. Multi-room music systems are something that, for many, are seen as either too expensive, too complicated, or contingent on having proper wiring in place. This is thankfully no longer the case. There are several systems that are budget-friendly, ultra simple, and wireless. Once set up, nothing more than a Smartphone or tablet is required to fill your home with your favourite tunes. Many fridges today have ice makers and water dispensers, and all of them require water filters. There is typically a ‘replace filter’ indicator light that comes on to remind you to change the filter, but did you know that this indicator is not always accurate? The best way to know if your filter needs replacing is when the water flow begins to slow down, if the light comes on before that, you can simply reset it and save yourself some money! Most home appliances today rely on computerized boards to control their many complicated and precise functions. These boards allow for significantly better performance over their predecessors, but can be vulnerable to electrical surges. A great way to reduce this risk is with single outlet surge protectors. These will work with any 110V appliance (fridges, microwaves, washing machines, gas ranges, etc.), and take up very little space.
Knowledge, Service, Honesty - the Hallmarks of Success at Haney Sewing and Sound Established in 1969 by Jack Sheppard, the store has been a fixture in Haney and the surrounding area serving residents top quality TVs, appliances, sewing machines, mattresses and stereo equipment. Sheppard had a long and distinguished career with the Singer Sewing Machine Company and was named the top salesman in Canada in 1967. After declining a management position with the company, he decided to continue his entrepreneurial spirit and opened up his own retail location (hence the name, Haney Sewing and Sound) and quickly added TVs, stereos, and appliances, with a focus on only carrying the premium brands in each product category. His sons Don and Dave joined the business in the 1980s and a third generation, grandson Greg Sheppard, joined the business in 2007. Throughout the years, Jack’s original vision has stayed the same. “It was originally just stereos and sewing machines, so the name made sense,” said Greg, who handles sales at the store. “We have always had the good fortune of working with a fun and a knowledgeable staff. I’m the relative new one. We have
staff here who have been with us for more than 15 years and in some cases close to 30, so it has that family feel even though not everyone is officially in the family, but everyone kind of is.” Greg said they are always trying to offer the consumer more, something different, something cutting edge. “Over the years we have cut a lot of product lines and brought in new things just to make sure we are at the cutting edge,” he said. “We want to make sure the things we have in the store are interesting, are modern, or are things you might not necessarily see anywhere else, so we try to make sure we are ahead of the curve on that and it sets us apart from others.” Their latest product line is in bedding, a product line that is starting to take off with their customer base. On the TV and home theatre side, you not only can purchase the latest in top quality equipment, but you can get the equipment custom installed in your home. Haney Sewing and Sound can do anything from setting up a TV and sound bar to full theatre rooms or full automation for the home. With the product lines that are offered, some might be a bit confused by the name, but Haney
Sewing and Sound has a proud history and one the family does not plan to change anytime soon. “There is a lot of name recognition in the area. People know us as Haney Sewing and Sound. It’s a tough one. Certainly I think we have outgrown the name, but at the same time, it’s
“Our Best Price Guarantee something that we can comfortably stand behind so there is no reason not to keep it local.” a brand and it’s tough to divorce yourself from that,” he said. “We are a success because we provide good knowledge, good service, honesty, good advice — it’s that kind of a place where we are not going to steer you in a direction that does not make sense for you. We try to tailor what we provide to our customers specific needs. We make sure our sales staff are knowledgeable, constantly trained. “With the advent of on-line shopping and big box, we have joined a nation-wide buying group, so that has been really helpful and
makes sure that our pricing is the same or better as it is anywhere else. It’s something that we can comfortably stand behind, so there is no reason not to keep it local.” Shopping locally is very important to the community and is another reason why Haney Sewing and Sound continues to thrive. “I think increasingly shopping local is becoming a more prominent value to everybody,” he said. “To keep things in the community, keeping the money in the community, by supporting local business you are making different network connections as well and it benefits everybody.” And Haney Sewing and Sound gives back as much as they get supporting a number of different fundraisers, schools, Rotary, Scouts and Guides. “It’s important to us. It’s a way to make the connection with the community.”

Know your car’s maintenance schedule and be vigilant with service. A properly-maintained vehicle saves you money in the long run. If using snow tires, make sure they are removed once the average temperature exceeds 7 degrees celsius. The rubber compound in snow tires is much softer and will wear out quickly in warm weather. Take care of your tires, keeping them properly inflated. This results in better gas mileage and safer driving performance. Don’t ignore your dashboard warning lights. A check engine light can represent more than 100 system malfunctions, from a fuel vapour leak to many other more serious problems. If the check engine light starts blinking, you must immediately shut the engine off and have it towed to a repair shop. To continue driving is dangerous and could be extremely costly. Fluid changes: Flush your cooling system at least every two years to avoid rust and sediment, which can be very costly and harm your engine. Have your technician check your brake fluid for water content (special test strip required). A high water content will lead to a mushy brake pedal and the moisture will start to rust the brake system from the inside. Brandon and Heather of Haney Automotive provide the best in service.
Haney Automotive is recognized by residents as the shop to go to Known for honest, friendly, quality workmanship. Owned and operated by Brandon Zimmerman, Haney Auto has been rated “the top auto maintenance and repair shop” 5 consecutive years in both the NEWS and TIMES readers pools. A News reporter stopped in to ask Brandon some questions about his shop. The News: Tell us about your business and why you receive these awards. Brandon: The most important goal is to earn our clients trust. It`s from this platform a long term relationship is built. We accomplish this by being honest and not over selling. If the service or repair can be done at a later date we inform our client so they can plan for the next service. Highly skilled technicians are also a key factor, we have the best with our senior tech being with us for 16 years. Communication with the client during the repair process is critical, we will not proceed without approval therefore there are no surprises when it comes to the bill. Haney Automotive is a full service shop with partners for glass and alignments and we supply tires at competitive prices. This results in a hassle free one stop shop. I think that all of the above services help when
being recognized for awards. The News: Tell us about your customer care program. Brandon: Plain and simple, we stand behind our work. If there is a problem we will make it right. When a repair is done we give our client a courtesy call to ensure that they are happy with the result. We then send thank you and service reminder emails. We do this in an effort to make your vehicle repair and maintenance as vent free as possible. Upon availability we can also provide you with a courtesy car The News: Tell us about the family aspect of your business.
Brandon: We have lived here for the past 30 years; it is our community, so giving back is important. We sponsor non-profit organizations such as Garibaldi Senior Secondary Dry grad, Maple Ridge Senior Secondary Dry Grad, Haney Neptune’s Swim Club, the Choral Society and numerous other nonprofit organizations. The News: Tell us about business in 2015 and your expectations for 2016.
Brandon: Well I have some exciting news, my Mom and Dad after many years have decided it’s time to retire. Well deserved for sure! In keeping with the “family run business” I am excited to welcome my wife Heather to Haney Automotive. Heather brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from a highpaced corporate environment. She is really excited to join the team and meet all of our valued clients. Heather will be in training starting February 1st.
Brandon: 2015 was a banner year for Haney Automotive. This can only be attributed to our loyal clients and their continued support of our family Heather with her assistant puppy Harper business. Having a Financial Planner helps clients understand why it is important to look at the holistic picture, not just one area. Having a Financial Planner helps clients stay focused on their overall goals and objectives and not market conditions. Having a Financial Planner lets clients know that someone is there to help, guide and educate. Having a Financial Planner gets clients to review their goals and objectives frequently, and measures their progress. Having a Financial Planner gives clients peace of mind, knowing that they are taken care of and there are no financial gaps.

With 36 years in the financial services sector, Certified Financial Planner Kathy Blom’s clients trust her to do what is right for them.
Kathy looks at the overall holistic picture for a client, such as will and estates, taxation issues, trust issues, RRSP and retirement planning and insurance protection.
“What I do with new clients is we have a conversation about what do they need. Maybe they don’t need me. Maybe they are selfdoers and like to manage their own planning. People don’t come
“You don’t often have a financial planner who has the banking background, the accounting background and the legal background that I have,” Kathy says. “This is a trust industry and people trust me.” She came up through the financial services sector with 20 years with CIBC and 15 years in the credit union system. She became an investment Funds Advisor in 1998, and progressed to become a Certified Financial Planner in 2008. For the past year or so, she has been out on her own, opening up her Manulife Securities office on Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge. It was the right step in her career as now she has more time to focus on her clients and their needs. And the majority of her clients made the move with her — a testament to what she can offer to her clients. “It’s been great being on my own. My job is to give them peace of mind and keep them safe. That’s what I do.” And every client is different, so Kathy makes sure she treats every client as such. “First we need to find out whether you fit, and do you like me? here to tell me what to do, they come here because they want me to guide them. I just go from A to Z. I ask a lot of questions about debt, life stage, and really what’s important to them. Not everyone’s goals and objectives are the same.” After she is confident in her client’s motivators, she gets to work putting together all of the components that will help them to achieve their stated goals. “There’s a lot of financial pressure on Canadians at all stages of their life, but especially as they get older, and they need good, solid advice and information,” she says. “I have a lot of senior clients, but I just also got three new young clients, 24, 25 and 27-years old, which is great because they are all
who came with me and invite others to come in and talk with me. This is my hometown so that’s why I’m here. It’s a wonderful place to live, work and do business,” she says.

Heating and Sheet Metal

by Ron McMyn, Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal co-owner
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Choose the right contractor, someone with a proven record of service and reliability. Consider how long they’ve been in business, and make sure you choose a reliable company that can be there down the road. Make sure your contractor carries all the parts for your heating or cooling solution. This will shorten delays if you need something replaced. Make sure your contractor can answer calls and be there for your warranty issues. Ensure that your contractor has licensed and bonded service technicians and quality installers. Pick a contractor with a wide selection of heating or cooling products so they can give you the one that’s right for your home.
Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal has been servicing the Fraser Valley for the past 29 years.
Not only heating at Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal Big Valley Heating And Sheet Metal Ltd.’s Ron McMyn has seen dramatic changes in his company over the last few decades, as it’s risen from a small operation to a large-scale business. “I’ve owned the company since 1986,” McMyn said. “We’ve gone from two guys to over 30 guys.” McMyn said the key to the business’ success has been an emphasis on serving customers’ needs.
“We do everything possible for the customer, if you¼re not happy we take care of it” Ron McMyn
“It’s good customer service and good quality work,” he said. “It’s mostly just treating the customer fairly.” Big Valley has built its reputation by standing behind its products and quickly responding to customers’ concerns . “It’s always being available, always being reachable,” he said. “If they have an issue, they come in, the service guys are there right away.” While heating buildings is still a key component of the business, Big Valley also offers a wide selection of fireplaces, outdoor heating solutions and more. “We don’t do just heat any more,” McMyn said. “We do fireplaces,
backyard patio heaters, outdoor heaters and barbecues.” He said those patio and outdoor heaters have risen in popularity lately, as they provide a nice way to have an enjoyable winter experience outside without going anywhere. “People are staying around their homes more,” McMyn said. McMyn said cooling products and air filtration products are also becoming more important parts of the business. Big Valley offers customized solutions that are perfect for those who need certain rooms kept cool, those who are bothered by allergies and others. “We do air conditioning, custom cooling, air filtration, air purification, and UV lights” he said. Big Valley’s size allows the business to maintain an extensive store so people can come in and see what’s available. “We have our own showroom where you can see all the products,” he said. Big Valley maintains an on-premises sheet metal shop as well, which allows us to tweak systems if required so each client gets the ideal solution for their home. “We’ll custom-make it to fit your house,” McMyn said. “We’re easy and accommodating. No job is too big or too small.” The heating business has changed significantly over the decades McMyn has been running Big Valley. He said one of the most
Big Valley helps keep your patio warm with a variety of products to choose from.
notable differences is just how much furnaces have improved. “We’ve gone from 40 per cent efficiency furnaces all the way to 98 per cent efficient.” McMyn said that’s a tremendous reason for those with older furnaces to upgrade, as the new ones’ efficiency can lead to dramatic energy savings. Big Valley can help with that. “We do lots of retrofits, taking out those old, inefficient, gas-guzzling furnaces,” McMyn said. “It’s a huge savings, a lot cheaper.” Another key way to save energy is cleaning or replacing dirty filters.
“Dirty filters use a lot of energy,” McMyn said. Big Valley’s open Monday through Saturday. Their proven track record makes them a reliable pick when looking for heating or cooling solutions, and they are a company that’s in it for the long haul. “We’re going to be here tomorrow, the next day and the day after,” says Mcmyn. Locate a non-commission store will allow you to have a more relaxed shopping experience. Store staff will help you more, instead of pressuring you to purchase something that benefits the commissioned salesperson. When it comes to furniture, don’t let what’s on our floor fool you. Most of the items have lots of options when it comes to colours, fabrics, leathers or sectional configurations. Measure twice. Not all appliances are the same size, especially refrigerators. They don’t only have to fit in the allocated spot, but also need to fit through hallways and doorways to get to the desired location. Make sure there is a good network of parts and service available for the appliance brand you are purchasing. We service what we sell. Are “firm” mattresses better for you? Not always. What to look for is a mattress that will support you. Mattresses aren’t “one size fits all.” Take the time to find one that fits you.
Dave and Justin Fuller represent the fifth generation of the family at the landmark Maple Ridge store.
Service is number one at Fuller Watson BrandSource Home Furnishings Brothers Justin and Dave Fuller know a few things about running a successful business. They have learned from the best — their family. The brothers represent five generations of Fuller Watson Brandsource Home Furnishings, proudly serving the Maple Ridge area since 1924. “My great, great-grandfather had the majority shares in 1924, although he never worked here,” recalls Justin. “The business was then just passed down through the generations. We both started working in the business at a young age. You started out in the warehouse doing deliveries and then you came up and worked in the store.” Justin says every year as the business moves closer to its centennial, the more it drives him and his brother. “We are now a year closer and I start to think about it and I know Dave thinks about it too, how amazing it would be to a 100-year-old business,” he says. “Over the years we both did different work, but we always found our way back here.” Both brothers were born in Ridge Meadows Hospital, went to school here and have lived and worked in the community all their lives.
There are 15 employees... some family, some friends. They all share a love for the community, and a love for the business. On why they have been so successful, Dave points to a number of factors, but service is top of mind.
“It¼s our buying power plus the added customer service that makes us strong.” Justin Fuller
“Service is our main focus — we pride ourselves on that,” Dave says. “Next I think is our clientele and the fact that we have so many repeat customers. It’s a generation kind of thing, where you see families buying from us and now over the years, their children and grandchildren are coming and buying from us, too. “We also had a good business base from our grandfather and father through the years.” Dave says they also take pride in having a much more relaxed and laid-back approach to sales. “We have no commissioned sales staff, so when you walk in the door and you want to browse,
you can browse without someone standing over you the whole way through, so again, I think that’s also a big part of our success — let people shop at their leisure, which you might not find at a lot of other places,” Dave says. Adapting to change has also been key. “I think also our adaptability to change has been a big strength,” Dave says. “The store started off selling hammers, clothes and rice and over the years we’ve adapted and evolved to where we are today.” Justin points out their position within BrandSource Canada as another factor for their success. “This helps us with our buying power,” he explains. “We are all individually owned stores. There are 200 in Canada and 4,500 in North America. When we go to the vendors we get the best deals on products so it allows us to be more than competitive with any of the the ‘big box’ stores. We also offer a more hands-on experience than other stores. You are not calling 1-800 numbers, you are dealing directly with the store, so it’s our buying power plus the added customer service that makes us strong.” The Fullers also point to a strong
business community in Maple Ridge and the fact that so many people want to shop locally. “Maple Ridge is obviously growing and there are lots of people that don’t know the history or have been a part of that history, but we are certainly getting a lot of new people to the community who want to shop local,” Dave says. “That is a big part of Maple Ridge — people want to support local business.” And supporting the community as the community has supported them is also important to the Fullers. BrandSource has supported Ronald McDonald House for the past 10 years and recently asked that all their member stores pledge their support. The Fullers were proud to do so. The store also lends its support to the Rotary Club, Drive for a Cure, Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, along with numerous schools, sports teams and community events. “Being both born and raised here, it’s nice to give back,” says Justin. “We can give back, but the big thing is, all the money raised by these charities is given back to this community, so that’s important to us.”

Glass Replacement

Consistency: a clear explanation of the repair process, a written quote, no hidden fees or surprises. Stress-free claims processing. Your claim will be processed on your behalf. Your vehicle returned to original factory specification. The latest tools and technology in the repair of your vehicle. Technicians committed to on-going learning with annual competency evaluations. Network-wide warranty: lifetime guarantee for as long as you own the vehicle, honoured throughout the ARA certified network.
Vance and Bobbi Whitley of Broco Glass Maple Ridge
Broco Glass: Certified The Best In Maple Ridge Vance Whitley is committed to his customers. He is committed to offering the best products, the best service experience and now, thanks to a new program offered through the Automotive Retailers Association (ARA), he can back up all those claims and more. Vance and his Broco Glass shop have been serving Maple Ridge for the past eight years. When the ARA launched its certified auto glass program last fall, Vance knew he wanted to be the first in the community to offer the program. “It’s important to the consumer to ensure that your windshield is being installed properly and safely,” he says. “Integrity of the vehicle is important, and the windshield is integral to the safety of your vehicle. It’s tough to differentiate whether you are using a good shop or a bad shop. As long as everything looks good, how can the customer tell the difference, whereas having this certification I can guarantee that I’m one of the best shops out there.” To become a certified-service provider, shops must meet and maintain the highest levels of performance. The ARA only certifies service providers which meet and maintain the Association’s criteria. This insures that the consumer is getting the highest level of service quality.
According to Darren Cox, industry relations advisor with the ARA, in the province of B.C. anybody can provide auto glass service. But how can you tell who is the professional, and separate him from the lowest common denominator?
“ I feel it¼s important to prove you are the best.” Vance Whitley
“This program is designed to identify those professionals. Because the program is in its infancy, I’m looking for strategic partners in different parts of the province,” Cox says. “I have known Vance for many years and his shop in Maple Ridge is professional and he really cares about our program. He believes in the integrity of his business.” Cox says that the goal of the ARA is to get as many of the good operators out there as possible, to be a part of the program. “What is unique to this program is while there are industry standards there was no way to identify those abilities, those skills if you will, so this program is unique because it requires an annual evaluation,” says Cox. “We come into the shop, watch the technicians replace a
windshield, watch them repair a stone chip and using recognized industry standards, we determine whether they have the necessary skills to do the job properly.” Vance says that when Cox contacted him, he couldn’t wait to get started. “This is very important to me. People are driving with their families in these vehicles — it’s important to me and my staff to do the best job,” he says. “We are part of a company that is in 35 countries doing auto glass. The research and development side is huge. When a model hits the market, we know all the ins and outs very quickly and we have the expertise to do the job properly and correctly. It’s all things that the average shop can’t offer its customers. We ensure that we are on the cutting edge. That’s why when this certification program came out, I wanted to be the first shop in this area to be part of this and we are, to my knowledge. I feel it’s important to prove you are the best.” And the added proof is the experiences of other business owners in the trade. Todd Oishi is the owner of Classic Image Auto Body. He has been using Vance’s shop as their exclusive glass company for the past decade. “I’m very pleased with their
professionalism and their workmanship. Never have I had an issue with their workmanship,” says Oishi. “Vance is very professional. Anyone who I’m associated with, I need to have a company and products that ensure success for my customers and that’s what I found dealing with Broco Auto Glass. “I’ve used all the glass companies in Maple Ridge over the past 25 years and Broco is the one I have stayed with the longest. I know what is required and expected in a glass company and they exceed every expectation. I wouldn’t use a company for my customers that I wouldn’t feel comfortable using on my own vehicle, so that says a lot about them.”

Clean old paint brushes. Even though you diligently clean your brushes, they will eventually wear out. Consider saving a couple of different sizes to repurpose as cleaning brushes. An old paint brush is an excellent tool for dusting off window trim or whatever else needs a light touch. Be careful where you’re walking in your yard away from summer. Foot traffic on wet soil will cause soil compaction problems. Even worse damage is caused by walking on lawns where the soil has thawed on top and is still frozen underneath; shearing roots in the frozen soil from the grass plants on top. Take the early spring as a time to repair and prepare your garden tools such as your lawn mower. Sharpen your mower blades, change oils, and lubricate where needed. Is it time to change the locks? Do you frequently lose and/or hide keys? It’s a bad idea to hide spare keys under your doormat and other convenient spots of choice. We suggest considering a combination lock. Feel your electrical outlets. Place your hand on the outlets in your home. Warm or hot outlets point to trouble. A warm outlet could mean one of several dangerous situations is brewing.
We supply jobs ranging from small renovations to multi-families and have separate divisions specializing in lumber, finishing, landscaping, paint and other products. Consult with our experienced staff to assist you to determine the right materials and ‘How To’ for all your building needs. For all your delivery and trucking needs we have a fleet of crane trucks, dump trucks, lumber trucks and pick-up trucks .
Haney business helps build homes, community Building the community can be just as important as important as building a sun deck. So it’s no surprise to those in the construction or renovation business that Haney Builders Supply is as much about this being a beneficial community member as it is about being a successful building business. The local building supply company takes pride in its community contributions as much as does in its professionalism. “The message that we would like to get across is that we’re still a smaller, locally owned and operated family business,” says general manager Alex Yakovyshenko. “We’ve been out there for many years and we do like to get involved in the different community things and give back in that regard.” Founded in 1938, Haney Builders Supplies is Maple Ridge’s oldest lumberyard and building supply store. Covering a complete city block (5 acres) in the heart of downtown on Dewdney Trunk Road. Haney Builders’ Supplies is also the area’s largest lumberyard and a one-stop store that can fulfill any of your building aspirations. The store’s knowledgeable, non-commissioned sales team is committed to building a strong relationship based on honesty and respect, and walk their customers through the building process from plan take-off to a final lock-up. And the store offers products that suit their needs best and fit their budget. Haney Builders customers have access to their accounts 24
hours a day, seven days a week through the company’s e-business application, which allows them to be on top of their spending. By paying attention to what’s happening, and by being flexible in how it operates, it’s been able to react positively to changes in the market when others with more rigid corporate structures have suffered. “I think we’ve recognized that in order to be successful you can’t be too structured. We like to innovate, adopt new technology to make things easier for customers, and provide services that people want and expect in a modern company,” Yakovyshenko explains. It’s that kind of thinking that led Haney Builders’ Supplies to create the Design Showroom at the east end of the property, so that those looking for window, door and kitchen products could shop in a relaxed atmosphere with the assistance of highly qualified staff and a website — www.haneyrenovators,com — dedicated exclusively to those products and the customer’s needs. And, with the company’s fleet of trucks — including a large truck with a crane for rooftop deliveries — they ship anywhere in the Lower Mainland and beyond. With Haney Builders’ Supplies, customers know they have an experienced and respected building partner; an assurance of getting the job done right the first time. From planning and estimates to completion, Haney Builders Supplies has everything it takes to be your one and only source
for all of your building needs. Consult with their team on choosing the right materials and “how to” for all building needs from framing to finishing. There’s certainly something to be said for having the buying power of a large national brand while retaining the flexibility and responsiveness only found in familyowned, locally run companies.
“We¼ve been out there for many years and we do like to get involved in the different community things and give back in that regard.” Alex Yakovyshenko, GM Haney Building Supplies is part of the TIM-BR Mart Group —a $2 billion plus, member-owned corporation serving building supply retailers, commercial dealers and home manufacturers across Canada. In business since 1967, TIM-BR Mart Group represents more than 750 independently owned locations, with most retailers displaying the TIMBER MART and / or Ace Hardware brands. It’s what has made Haney Builders’ Supplies a driving force in the Maple Ridge construction and homeimprovement industry for the past 75 years. And it’s something the Stinson family and their employees are immensely proud of. But the locally owned and operated company is also know for its community contributions.
And Yakovyshenko and his teammates want to thank the community for its support over the past seven and a half decades. “We’re very grateful for the opportunity to help people in so many ways over the years,” he says. Local events and groups the business sponsors include: • Pink Shirt Day - Anti Bullying • Ducks Unlimited Canada • Christmas Hamper Society • The War Amps Child Amputee Program | CHAMPS • Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation • Sunshine Foundation of Canada | BC Lower Mainland RCMP Golf Tournament In 2015, for the 29th year, the team at Haney Builders organized a fundraising golf tournament for their customers and suppliers, with raised funds supporting a variety of charities. “Last year we raised $14,000 for the hospital,” Yakovyshenko says. “I think, from the day we started, we’re over $160,000 that we raised for the hospital.” Yakovyshenko says Haney Builders is even interested in exploring other ways to raise funds for these and other worthy causes. “We’re always looking for these new avenues for how we can bring money to the cause,” he says. “Because at the end of it, it’s all for the good cause. There’s so many of these things.” Now that’s something to be proud of … and build on.

Legal Services

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
The Wills, Estates and Succession Act came into force on March 31, 2014. It makes significant changes to the law regarding wills and estates. To quote the Provincial Government press release: “People who already have a will may wish to sit down with their lawyers to ensure their wishes are upheld. Your legal relationships in the family business need to be properly documented. A legal fight with family is always awful, so do what you can to avoid it. Family business succession planning is a process that does not happen overnight. It can take years to put in place the proper legal, tax planning and mentorship. Start talking now. When spouses split up there is a host of legal issues that need resolving. We offer collaborative law and mediation options, along with traditional Supreme Court and Provincial Court litigation services. In real estate practice, we are seeing an increasing number of parents and children buying homes together. Often the parents put in cash from a downsizing, and the children agree to pay the mortgage. The mortgage company usually requires everyone sign the mortgage. A co-ownership agreement clarifies the relationship – who is paying what, what triggers a sale and how the proceeds are divided.
Terry and John Becker have been providing legal services to the area for 36 years.
Becker & Co. Lawyers prepare clients for life changes With 36 years in the Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge community, the experienced team at Becker & Company Lawyers is available to help you prepare for life changes. Planning for change is an important part of personal and business strategic thinking. The firm’s lawyers are trusted advisors who can guide you through inter-generational transfers. They specialize in succession planning, in which a family plans for the transfer of a business between generations, including knowledge, skills, labour, management, control and ownership. With thoughtful and collaborative decision-making and planning, the lawyers will help you protect important family relationships, so you can better focus on the needs of your business. “Since we’ve been around for 36 years, we’ve watched people build companies and transfer the business to their children,” says John Becker. The team can guide successful transfers, which preserve family unity between generations, while managing
expectations and protecting business assets and goals. In addition to intergenerational transfers, the firm’s lawyers specialize in strata management, including negotiating relationships in a strata corporation, facilitation towards a common goal, and providing arbitration and mediation services. “Strata corporations and managers can rely on us for our legal expertise,” says Becker. The lawyers at Becker & Company also focus on family law and mediation. They are experienced and trusted advisors who specialize in issues that result when a marriage ends, including child custody, access, support, and property and debt division. Most clients prefer to settle their issues outside of court, and the firm’s team will lead the arbitration process so that a decision can be found that is acceptable to everyone. “We help people come to their own decisions without having to go to court,” says Becker. However, if the situation leads to court, lawyers at Becker & Company are experienced and capable of representing
their clients to ensure they receive the best outcome. For personal clients, the firm says that it is important for young adults to put financial plans in place to care for both their children and their aging parents, who will later need financial and physical support.
“It¼s much better to plan for events than be surprised by them and scramble to react.” John Becker
People in their 40s and 50s often have the responsibility of caring for their parents, while at the same time still have late teens or early 20-somethings still living at home or attending post-secondary education at their cost. “This can put a significant financial burden on a family – it can get very expensive,” says Becker. With over three decades of experience, the firm has developed close working relationship with professional advisors in the region who
specialize in other areas of transitional planning, including accountants, financial planners, and bank and credit union representatives. The team uses these community resources to efficiently and effectively implement personal and business strategies. “It’s much better to plan for events than be surprised by them and scramble to react,” says Becker. Take advantage of a $250 rebate offered by Metro Vancouver for trading in an old uncertified wood-burning appliance.
Consider buying a new stove or insert before prices start to increase due to the sinking Canadian dollar. Burning chimney-sweeping logs in wood-burning stoves can cause chimney fires, and the stove needs to be cleaned professionally if this is done. Buy a high-quality stove, including the B.C.-made stoves available at Warm Hearth Hearing Centre. Make sure your chimney is cleaned by a professional, WETT certified chimney sweep every year.

Lisa Blaine from Maple Ridge’s Warm Hearth Heating Centre, says rebates currently offered by Metro Vancouver are a good incentive for homeowners. Residents are eligible to receive a $250 rebate for trading in their old, uncertified woodburning appliance for a new low-emission appliance. Warm Hearth Heating Centre – located at 11834 226th St. – sells a variety of EPA-certified stoves that will make a stylish addition to any home. “The government wants to encourage people to use stoves that burn cleaner and don’t give off as much smoke,” says Lisa. “Now is the time to buy to take advantage of these savings.” Another reason to buy is the continuing decline of the Canadian dollar, which will likely make stoves more expensive in the future. The low Canadian dollar makes the cost of materials more and, as a result, units are more expensive to produce, even if they’re made in B.C. “If you’re thinking of buying,
you should do so sooner rather than later,” says Lisa.
and don’t have time to burn wood, Lisa recommends a gas stove.
dangerous, and the stove will need to be professionally cleaned after.
“We’re already seeing prices go up, so it’s a good time to stop by Warm Hearth and see what we have in store.”
“It’s as convenient as clap-on, clap-off,” she says.
As long as proper precautions are taken, Lisa says that a wood or gas-burning stove can be an excellent addition to any home.
“If you¼re thinking of buying, you should do so sooner rather than later.” Lisa Blaine Warm Hearth Heating Centre Warm Hearth Heating Centre’s wide selection of wood, pellet and gas-burning stoves provides benefits beyond just keeping warm. Lisa explains that the kind of heat provided by burning wood is ideal for the Lower Mainland’s humid climate since the dryness of the wood goes a long way towards keeping houses mold-free. She says enjoying a woodburning stove regularly is a lifestyle, because you have to split the wood, stack it and clean up after. The effort is worth it, however, because wood is the cheapest heating method and also creates a cozy atmosphere. For people who lead busy lifestyles
With cold weather on the way, Lisa says customers are buying stoves as part of their emergency plan. “They are asking, ‘how do we survive eight days without power?’”
“They can really turn a house into a home.”
She recommends buying highquality units – an easy task to fulfill at Warm Hearth since many of its products are made in B.C., which is considered the best in manufacturing. Visitors to the United States can notice local brands like Regency and Pacific Energy on full display, because their reputations cross the border as well. “These companies’ proven track records speak for themselves.” One important tip Lisa emphasizes is to not use chimney-sweeping logs in wood-burning stoves because they can dry out the inside and make it more flammable, potentially causing a chimney fire. The air-tight environment makes the situation

by Ian Speckman
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Always check reviews. Rely on past experiences, not the face value or what is presented to you. Look for manufacturers-sponsored programs. Look for a business that is in your community. Shop local. Buy from Maple Ridge Chrysler because they are closer than you think. We are all of the above.
With acres of new and used vehicles to choose from, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for at Maple Ridge Chrysler.
A commitment to customer service at Maple Ridge Chrysler Jeep Dodge The customer is number one at Maple Ridge Chrysler Jeep Dodge. And dealer principal Ian Speckman wouldn’t have it any other way. He learned early in his career that superior customer service, honesty and integrity was a winning formula for success. And that formula has helped the dealership to become the number one selling Chrysler dealership in B.C. and number two in Canada. Speckman states, “We are not only proud of our success, but also the way in which we have obtained it. We care about people before, during and after the sale.” “Since our humble beginnings in the 1950’s and continuing today, we have always thought of ourselves as being in the people business.” Speckman states that in his “rookie” year as a sales representative, he felt the industry had a poor reputation and wanted to change it. He reflected on an earlier job working in a restaurant where he was very successful. He knew that people wanted to be greeted in a warm and friendly manner, they wanted to be treated with respect and get good value for their hard-earned money. It begged the question why couldn’t those principals be applied to the car business?
Today Speckman is the dealer principal of a fast growing, ever-changing company that has never lost sight of what made it successful. “People tell us time and time again that Maple Ridge Chrysler is different. The difference is by design, not accident. We recognize that people have different needs and wants. They may be interested in safety, economy, style, performance or all of the above. One of the most important factors in this decision-making process is their payment, and how it fits in their monthly budget. “Typically when you walk into a car dealership or a retail outlet the sales person will say, ‘Hi, may I help you.’ Our knee jerk reaction is always the same, ‘No I’m just looking.’ But who visits a car lot “just looking”? They are looking for information, looking for a product — they want to know, but are in fear of giving up information. “That’s not what we do here. We welcome the customer, introduce ourselves and ask them if they are here for sales or service. Then ask them if they have been here before and if they want to speak with someone in particular. We take away the stigma of the car salesman. We need to find out
what is important to them and not what is important to us. “At Maple Ridge Chrysler we listen, and when in doubt we listen again. Our job is to assist people in making good choices. When people feel comfortable, safe and content in their purchase they will refer their friends, family and neighbors, and that is essential to our success.”
“We need to Ånd out what is important to you, not what is important to me.” Ian Speckman
Maple Ridge Chrysler gives back to the community. “We, as a company, believe that since all of our 142 employees earn a living in Maple Ridge, that we need to give back, whether it be in the form of supporting local charities, individual families or team sports.” He continues, “I have three sons that all participated in local sports growing up. I feel that it is very important for our youth to get out there and be active, but more importantly learn discipline, commitment, and how to be a team player. By supporting the local rinks in Pitt Meadows,
and being the primary sponsor of the Rotary Duck race, we ensure that a future generation can participate in sports.” When the dealership moved off of Lougheed Highway to its present location in 1997, many thought they were crazy. “There was nothing here. People said if we moved we were going to fail,” Speckman recalled. “But business immediately increased 20 per cent. We had more space, and we could offer more services for our customers. Here we are almost 20 years later with hopes of growing again. The plans have been draw, the land has been purchased and we are now in the final preparation stages before we break ground on a new stateof-the-art facility. We will be able to better assist our growing client base of over 26,000 customers.” Speckman never loses sight of the fact that the staff of Maple Ridge Chrysler is what makes it so unique. A building is a building; it’s the people that work in it that make the difference. “I pay strict attention, as the wellbeing of my staff is of the utmost importance. I know without their success, I will not be successful.”

Westgate Flower Garden — Straight From The Heart The moment you walk into Westgate Flower Garden, you feel right at home. Owner Sandra Taylor and her team offer the customer a beautiful and inviting atmosphere that puts you at ease. Buying flowers can be difficult at times. Not every occasion is a happy one, but Westgate Flower Garden ensures that every purchase comes ‘straight from the heart.’ “We have been so fortunate to be in our little flower garden in this community for 16 years,” says Sandra. “Really our flower garden has gone beyond our vision — which is reaching the world through flowers. We have grown into something that we never thought it would.” Born in Ireland, Sandra always had a dream and a vision to own
a flower shop with a focus on blooms and giving back to the community. Her dream became a reality when she and her family moved to Maple Ridge.
In certain situations, especially sad situations there are no words, but there are always Æowers — Æowers can take the place of words. “Nothing compares to the beauty of a bloom,” she says. “When we first opened up I wanted to serve the world with flowers and to reach those who didn’t know what flowers could do for them. I think we have achieved that and more.” And the store is not just only about a love for flowers — but a
love for her community, as well. “What I do is very personal to my heart. My love for the youth in our community and the children of our community is very strong,” she says. “We always want to provide a good positive environment for them, which is probably why we have so many wonderful youth working with us. “We have six part-time girls, all ranging in age from 18 to 22. We have a few long-time girls who have been with us for 15, 16 years, they are truly a part of the core of our flower garden. The younger members of our team are a part of that wonderful generation that we need to respect and foster. It’s very important to offer employment to the youth of our community, and help to bring them up in our unique floral industry.” To that end, two of her girls
are taking courses in floral design and the shop is helping fund their schooling. “The world needs more good designers. It’s okay to have a flower shop, but we also want to offer unique designs, always creating to perfection. The shop also offers children’s workshops every month. “Many of these kids have been coming for a while, so they feel very comfortable here. I think at a very young age we need to help them to be respected and loved. They say it takes a village to grow and bring up a child and I really believe as business owners we owe it to the community to do just that. “To say after 16 years that you still love your job is something I personally feel very grateful for, and so onwards we go in our creative world. ”

Service shines bright at Cloud 9 Beautique It’s not your likely ownership combination when you think of nail bar and mediSpa, but Dr. Daniel Gouws and his partner, Chantal Schutz, CPA, CA have found the perfect combination to run a successful business. Both have been long-time residents of Maple Ridge getting to initially know each other in the early morning cold at Boot Camp. Their connection doesn’t stop there! Their children attend the same school and they both worked for a number years at Back In Motion Rehab; Gouws as an Occupational Health Physician and Schutz as the Chief Financial Officer. Cloud 9 Beautique is the blissful marriage of medical and business backgrounds combined with a team of outstanding experts of Nail Technicians, Estheticians, Make-up artists, and Laser Hair Removal Technicians.
and Fillers. “Our approach with the medical esthetics and all our service offerings, is to consider each client’s individual needs and to develop a treatment plan to suit. Factors to be considered include the degree of invasiveness, price, lag time for results to become apparent and down time following more invasive procedures. Some treatments may be very effective but take some time to show results (in same way that you don’t expect to be in peak shape after going to the gym for a week) while others can be quite invasive and require some down time after the treatment. With the advent of newer skin treatments such as the use of vitamin A and micro-needling, patients can now obtain real anti-aging effects and maintain skin health.
Cloud 9 Beautique is a modern, clean and serene full-service nail bar and mediSpa located in the heart of Maple Ridge, offering a full range of nail, waxing, and medically directed skin care treatments, including laser hair removal, and injectables for a more youthful appearance.
“Our philosophy with the medical esthetics and all our service offerings, from pedicures to facials, is to always act from a place of integrity; never over-treating, always using only the highest quality products and being honest about what one can achieve with these procedures
It’s not just another salon. “We’re very motivated to make sure customers feel that they’re important, and that they matter to us whether they’re coming in for a pedicure or skin rejuvenation, says Chantal Schutz, Co-Founder and CEO of the 226 Street business, known for its cleanliness, integrity and professionalism. Dr. Gouws is known for his conservative yet effective approach to anti-aging treatments such as laser and light treatments, sublative (radiofrequency) treatments, Botox
This is comparable to good dental care with flossing that now allows us to have healthy teeth into old age without breaking the bank. On the other side of the spectrum we offer treatments that have a more immediate effect such as Botox and fillers. says Daniel Gouws, Co-Founder and President. Together with their talented and committed team, they plan to grow
the Cloud 9 Beautique name with a series of programs for other salons through the consultancy arm of their company, Salon Operating Solutions. These programs will empower current owners of struggling salons to really take charge, and own a business that thrives and grows. “We’re just a little beautique here in Maple Ridge, but we’re trying to create a model in which hundreds of these could be run—whether they are run as Cloud 9, or whether they’re run as Sally’s Nail Bar—the salon owner learning from us about how to properly run her business, for more profit and freedom. She and her staff and customers will be happier because of that, says Schutz. When you walk through the doors of Cloud 9 you get the sense that the staff here are really a team and love their work-home. Cloud 9 is also committed to investing in its staff to further enhance technical skills and to build leaders. Five team members are now enrolled in the six-month Gaia Leadership program. From that, Cloud 9 will develop its own in-house leadership and lifecoaching program that all staff will go through. They not only speak about the empowerment of women, they take action. Two other team members are enrolled in the skin therapy program at dermalogica, a skin care line Cloud 9 carries, and they’ll be Expert Skin Therapists by March. Try to keep your goodbyes consistent when dropping of your child. If today you’re going to give ten kisses and four hugs make sure you can do the same tomorrow and everyday. Clear communication is important. If you have any questions or concerns address them immediately. Do your research on the daycare center and its philosophy’s to make sure it matches your families philosophy. Ask for references, take a tour of the facility, and most of all ask lots of questions. Make sure your child is equipped with the appropriate clothing for the weather. Make sure they have a good selection of health foods for the amount of time they will be in care for. If you have any sensitive information you would like to share please ask for a private meeting so little ears do not overhear.
Our children enjoying activities at Little Garden Montessori Center
Little Garden kids’ home away from home Montessori daycare centre a family run business Your children are as good as being at home when you trust them to the care givers at Little Garden Montessori Center. We offer a home away from home for your child and provide them with a safe and secure environment while you are at work. This is the atmosphere of caring and support that we provide to our local families. Little Garden is a Daycare and Preschool facility locally owned and operated and has all the comforts of home. We practice the Montessori Philosophy of quality educational learning and socialization for children 10 months to 12 years of age. We offer unique programs for infants, toddlers, 3 to 5 year olds, preschool, multi-age, and before & after school care. We recognize that each child is a unique individual and that all children have the ability to succeed. Our center and caregivers respect the needs of all children in our care. We provide a wonderful environment that enhances each child’s total development. We are a safe and supportive center creating a challenging learning environment encouraging your children’s success through activities appropriate to their individual learning styles. “I want the sense of home to be all around them when they attend”
said Bennett. Children’s self-esteem is fostered through positive relationships with the center’s caregivers. Parents, teachers and community member are actively involved in our students’s learning. Our staff members constantly challenge themselves to provide quality education experiences for all children and families who attend the center. We continue to keep our Early Childhood Education (ECE) education current by completing workshops, seminars and training. We feel this contributes to the centre’s professionalism making it engaging and responsive to every child at each stage of development. We have many different activities including Yoga, music & movement, science, arts & crafts and many more. We recently expanded our facitlity, we now have 7 beautiful new daycare rooms and we are looking forward to helping to fill the need for childcare and experienced ECE teaches in our community. In the preschool program at Little Garden children learn grace and courtesy as well as the power of doing things for themselves. Their sense of pride in being able to do for themselves makes them a happy member of our community. The children are taught the 3
“ We recgognize that each child is a unique individual and that all children have the ability to succeed. We offer programs for — infant, toddler, multi-age before and after school and pre-school.”
R’s - Respect Yourself, Respect Each Other and Respect your environment. The Montessori philosophy is the reason Little Garden Montessori Center is so successful as we support the children in achieving those goals. Montessori education philosophy recognizes that children are born with the ability to pattern sequence and memorize. Dr. Maria Montessori (Aug 31, 1870-May 6, 1952) likened a child’s learning to something like taking a picture with a camera, instant, effortless and permanent. This ability to absorb information so easily allows a child to learn a great deal in a very efficient manner. An environment must be interesting, with challenging material so that without interference children will naturally absorb the right things at the right time. The teachers within our program observe our children to see where their interests are and
as they guide them to learning in that direction. Montessori takes advantage of the natural stages of development to keep the child’s education joyous and positive. They find a joy in learning new things as we constantly change things up to allow children to flourish and develop. The first six years of your child’s life are the most important in developing personality, intellect and self concept. We provide an environment conducive to your child’s emotional and intellectual needs helping them to grow in the most natural way and become a contributing and influential part of society. We respect each child as an individual and help them to learn to interact with others the same way. At this young impressionable age we model respect for all diverse cultures and beliefs. Montessori had always supported a Peace curriculum knowing that if we raise our children in peace we will someday have a peaceful world. We at Little Garden Montessori Center believe what best serves children is for them to be able to develop naturally with the freedom to learn what they are drawn to with a sense of caring and love.

Once you have made your purchase, make sure to acquire all the necessary tools, cleaning materials and accessories to ensure your firearm lasts and works reliably. This is a very important step often overlooked by consumers. If you have unwanted, used or inherited firearms you no longer want, contact Wanstalls and set up an appraisal appointment to have them purchased on the spot.
Our Friendly staff can help you find exactly what you are looking for.
Wealth of firearm knowledge at Wanstalls More than a firearm store, Wanstalls is a pro shop and resource centre with information for everyone, from brand new gun owners to experienced firearm aficionados. Our staff have extensive knowledge of hunting and sport shooting that can’t be found at big box stores. “We offer much more attention and care. We live and breathe firearms, and have a wealth of knowledge,” said Store Manager Matt Mendel. “Stop by our store and our experienced staff can help you decide which gun is best for your needs.” Besides offering information on specific guns, the staff also know about licencing, where to go sport shooting and hunting, and much more. Wanstalls, located at 22338 Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge, has been open since 1971. All types of firearms from every major manufacturer are available, as well as a wide selection of hunting, shooting and reloading supplies.
With hundreds of different kinds of guns in stock, there are many options for everyone. For people who own guns they no longer want, Wanstalls buys used guns at a fair price. After gathering basic information about the gun over the phone, a staff member will visit the owner’s house to assess the value. An appraisal can be completed on the spot, and money offered to the owner right away. With a terrific reputation in the community, customers are ensured that they are dealing with an honest, professional and reputable company. “Often people will inherit a gun, and they don’t have a licence or particularly want the gun. We also purchase estates too,” said Mendel. “It’s reassuring to know you’re dealing with an honest company that has been a respected part of Maple Ridge for decades.” With 45 years of experience, Wanstalls is the go-to pro shop for firearms in Maple Ridge. “Everyone who works here is
passionate about the business of firearms. You won’t find that at any big box stores,” said Mendel. “This is a full time job for all of our staff. They make their living working here, and are very dedicated.” A good first step for anyone interested in firearms is to stop by the store to speak to a staff member, who can get a feel for what the person is looking for and determine which type of gun is most suitable.
“We live and breathe Årearms, and have a wealth of knowledge.” Matt Mendel Wanstalls’ website, www. wanstallsonline.com, is also a comprehensive resource for beginners and experienced firearms enthusiasts. New models are features throughout the year, and a large supply of hunting and shooting supplies are available. Because Wanstalls is dedicated
to preserving the proud tradition of private firearms ownership in Canada, a small portion of the proceeds from firearms sold is donated to the National Firearms Association and the Canadian Shooting Sports Association. Wanstalls offers financing for three, six and 12 month terms on firearm purchases, with rates starting at 4.9 percent. Recently, Mendel has seen more women and young people of both sexes buying firearms. “The stigma of owning a firearm is pretty much gone now,” said Mendel, adding Wanstalls offers firearms for all ages and abilities. Mendel has also noticed a significant increase in people purchasing tactical firearms, as opposed to more traditional models. Whether it’s for hunting or sport shooting, Wanstalls is the go-to place in Maple Ridge to learn more about owning a firearm. The Well Public House is home to fresh food and fun times If you’re looking for a great night out, look no farther than The Well Public House. The Well, located at the vibrant Chances Maple Ridge on Lougheed Highway, is a place to unwind or spend a few hours with old and new friends while enjoying all that it has to offer. “We’re definitely able to offer something that a lot of the local restaurants or pubs aren’t able to,” said Krystal Dupuis, marketing co-ordinator for Chances Maple Ridge. The experience starts in a contemporary setting with well-crafted food and drink menus, and continues with live music and entertainment. Multiple 80-inch TVs located throughout The Well ensure guests won’t miss the most exciting moments of their favourite game. Whether it’s hockey, football or European soccer, guests will always find a game playing. The Well features live entertainment every Friday and Saturday night, including local bands, tribute acts, comedy nights and televised UFC pay-per-view matches. On Feb. 26, for example, Vancouverbased Beatles tribute band the Day Trippers will perform, transporting guests back to the touring days of the early-1960s. Most performances at The Well Public House begin at 9:30 p.m., allowing those who may
have enjoyed a bingo game at Chances to get settled before the show begins. And since shows are always free, guests are encouraged to arrive early to get their favourite seats. “We’re an entertainment destination,” said Dupuis. “Guests can have a bite to eat, enjoy a drink with their friends, and then stick around for some great local entertainment—maybe dance a little bit and even try their luck on the slot machines.” With modern industrial décor, The Well Public House offers a casual atmosphere where everyone can feel comfortable. It’s a place where couples come and enjoy a relaxing meal, where co-workers gather for drinks after work, where friends catch up over fresh food and favourite beverages. The menu has something for every craving, from The Well Classic Burger and Pan Seared Salmon to the Southwest Chicken Salad and Spinach & Artichoke Dip. Dining and drink deals are offered all week long—regular specials that keep hungry guests coming back. There’s the $5 Three Egg Breakfast, for example, offered Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, and weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Thursday nights, from 5 to 8 p.m., The Well Public House offers its popular All You Can Eat Pasta Buffet—a deal at $10 made sweeter with $10 in FREE slot play for Encore Rewards
members. The Sunday Roast Beef Buffet is also a draw—available from 5 to 8 p.m. for only $17. Another offering at The Well Public House is space for the community. Its beautifully designed Community Room is the perfect location to host special events, fundraisers or meetings, and affordable
“We¼re an entertainment destination. Guests can have a bite to eat, enjoy a drink with their friends, and then stick around for some good entertainment.” Krystal Dupuis catering options are available. A second smaller space is the boardroom. Located on the second floor, the boardroom is a great venue for workshops, meetings and seminars. Local businesses and other groups take advantage of renting the space, and catering options to fit any budget are also offered. With all The Well Public House has to offer, there’s no need to leave Maple Ridge to experience a fun night out. “You’re saving on the commute time from having to drive down to Vancouver, and you’re keeping your dollars in the
community,” said Dupuis. Supporting the community is important to The Well Public House and to Chances Maple Ridge, most of whose employees live in the region. “We take a lot of initiatives as a company to give back to the communities in which we work and live,” said Dupuis. Last year the Chances team was happy to host two food drives—one being a friendly staff competition over the summer, and a second partnering with the Friends in Need Food Bank over the Christmas holidays for a drive involving the larger community. “We received a lot of positive feedback from both events,” said Dupuis. “We were able to come together as a team, have some fun and give back to the community.” Also in 2015, Chances Maple Ridge announced Alisa’s Wish Child and Youth Advocacy Centre as its signature charitable partner. As part of the announcement and commitment, Chances Maple Ridge made a $10,000 donation to the organization. Alisa’s Wish is a community initiative, managed by Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, that helps children and youth in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Katzie First Nations, who have experienced or witnessed abuse. Chances’ partnership with Alisa’s Wish will continue throughout 2016.

Knowledgeable staff and old-fashioned customer service. Quality tested supplements. Wide selection of wheat-free and gluten-free foods. 100% certified organic produce. No chemicals, preservatives, artificial flavours or colours, guaranteed.
Our friendly staff can help you find everything you need.
Healthy, natural products are the cornerstone of Roots Jeff Miller has run Roots Natural Organic Foods for over two decades now, but the store has changed significantly in that time. “I bought it 23 years ago,” Jeff says. “It was a quarter of the size it is now.” There have been significant product changes in that time, too, as the store has evolved from a specialty shop into a full-service organic grocery. “It was your typical hippie granola thing,” Jeff says. “Now we’re full-service.” Jeff says the store’s mission hasn’t changed, however. “We’re trying to help people be healthy,” he says. “We try to sell good natural products.” Jeff says eating properly and living healthily is a lifestyle, and he’s tried to make his store a community-focused place that can help people do that. “That’s the way I live,” he says. “I made it a store I would want to shop in.” Jeff says it can be difficult for people to make sure they’re buying natural products at a regular grocery store, which is where Roots Natural comes in. “We do the shopping for you,” he says. “You don’t
have to read the labels, because we do. We stand behind all our products.” Jeff co-owns the store with his wife, Tammy. She says they’re committed to ensuring only the best products are sold in their store. “We don’t sell it unless we’ve tried it,” she says. A growing part of their business has been natural dietary supplements, which Jeff says are crucial to overall health in this era of heavily processed foods. “No matter how good you think you eat these days, you can’t get everything from your foods,” he says. “You’ve got to fill that gap, and that’s what the supplements do.” The store was founded in 1971, and Jeff says it’s the oldest remaining natural foods store in the Lower Mainland Maple Ridge. He says Maple Ridge has been the perfect location for him. “The customer base is awesome,” he says. “The loyal day-to-day customer has built our business. If you want to build a good natural food customer base, this
is the place to build it.” Jeff says many of his customers and their families have been coming to the store for decades. “It’s a whole community,” he says. “We’ve hired lots of our customers’ kids.”
We don¼t sell it unless we¼ve tried it,”
The store also hosts speakers on healthy living. Jeff says the speakers are an important part of their goal to improve people’s health. “We just try to educate people,” he says. Jeff says the education has caught on, as there’s an ever-growing interest in natural foods. “Health foods aren’t just for hippies any more, they’re for everyone,” he says. “It’s a part of everyday life; it’s a lifestyle.”
Root’s Natural has been serving customers since 1971.

Be authentic to who you are by living your Dharma. Your Dharma is what you are passionate about in life, such as teaching or inspiring others. Always have compassion for others. You never know what someone is going through. Notice the details within and around you to help you enjoy life to the fullest every day. Practice balance with all aspects of your life: work, play, family time, spiritual nourishment. Refresh your body, mind and soul with good nutrition, love and support.

Refresh Your Body and Your Mind at Epic Yoga The atmosphere at Epic Yoga & Fitness is unlike any other studio. Deeply connected to the community, the bright 1,900-square-foot space has a relaxing, open and welcoming feel, where people come to practice yoga, meditate or sweat in a variety of fitness and yoga classes. It’s a place for students to pause from their busy schedules and discover time for themselves. And there’s no shortage of choice: Epic offers more than 30 drop-in classes each week, with yoga styles ranging from Hatha for the wellrounded, to Power Yoga for more adventurous students. Classes in restorative and meditative styles are also offered daily. “At Epic, we draw deeply on the tradition of yoga and its many different aspects,” says owner Karen Waite. “Our teachers and students are firmly rooted in alignment form and benefits.” Waite, an Epic teacher since the studio opened in 2007 and owner since May 2014, has watched the Lougheed Highway business grow to become a vibrant and important part of the Maple Ridge community. “We are involved in many aspects of the town - from supporting local fundraisers, to being a part of the Canada Day festival, stocking local artists’ retail at the studio, and holding free
yoga classes to raise money for the food bank,” she explains. “We also sent one of our students to India to help build a school. We practice building relationships and it shows well.” Epic combines the traditional roots of yoga with the energy of TRX fitness classes in an atmosphere that students have helped create— one that’s rooted in the body’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Students are guided into a Hatha Yoga class — suitable for all levels, from those who aren’t sure if they can touch their toes to advanced practitioners.
“Epic has been created by the students, the relationships that they have built from their yogic practice on and off the mat.”
Epic’s TRX suspension training classes pair well with yoga, as both focus on body alignment, developing strength, balance, flexibility and core stability. The concept behind TRX is simple: use one’s own body weight to create resistance during exercise. Students build up strength in the TRX classes, and then the deep stretching from yoga helps to balance it.
Epic’s range of specialty classes include pre- and post-natal yoga and fitness classes, led by certified instructors in yoga and TRX fitness. Another specialty yoga style is Ashtanga Yoga, one of the few traditional styles of yoga in which others, such as Power Yoga, are based on. Workshops are also a key offering at Epic. Regularly held sessions include Tai Chi, Back Foundation Training with local chiropractor Dr. Angela Macdonald, and Gong Meditation. Specialty workshops include Ayurveda, Yoga Nidra, Yoga for Men and Family Yoga. Epic also offers 200-hour and advanced courses in Yoga Teacher Training. The recognized school of Red Door Yoga partners with Epic for weekend classes held at the studio. A big draw for students is the studio’s thoughtful approach to scheduling. Epic sets a schedule in which back-to-back classes support each other. One class will be vigorous, followed by a more relaxing session, allowing students to maximize the benefits of each
class. For example, a 9 a.m. Power Yoga Level 1 class is followed by a Restorative Yoga class at 10:15 a.m as a cool down and stretch after the intensity of Power Yoga. This system works with the Ayurvedic daily schedule to receive optimal benefits for the body’s energy. There’s no question that those involved with Epic Yoga & Fitness believe in the positive impact yoga and fitness has on people’s lives. Being part of the Maple Ridge community herself, Waite sees that in action every day. Running into students at the grocery store might spark a conversation about what’s happening in their lives and how that’s affecting their practice. “It shows me all the time that yoga and fitness practice doesn’t end when you step off the mat. It’s a continuous part of our lives,” says Waite. Your first drop-in class at Epic is free, and those who still aren’t sure what’s right for them can try out a free week of classes at the studio.

community MARKETPLACE Brewing
5 tips Consumer
from Foamers’ Folly Brewing Co.
1.
2. 3. 4.
5.
Foamers’ Folly Brewing co is inspired by mistakes. Making beer allows our brewers to let their hair down and throw caution to the wind. We do not waste beer, we sell beer. We have the traditional mainstays on tap but we are always exploring. If there’s a beer that you want us to try… Chances are if you talk to our brewers polite enough they might entertain your thought. Kid friendly? Heck, ya. Just don’t rely on them to drive you home. We have pizza and delicious designer soda along with chips and pop. The best part is we are exploring the world of Root Beer! The key word there is exploring. Recipes are being concocted as you read this. Heads up, WE ARE NOT A RESTAURANT! Our menu is beer! But it’s cool though, you can bring in your own food and eat it right in front of us! However, if you want a $12 pizza then walk over to the cooler and decide first hand. We will be exploring other food opportunities as we grow up. After all we’re only 3 months old. Our beer in your fridge. Since we are still brand new, the only way to take our beer with you is in a growler. Share it with your friends and then refill it for only $6. There is no owners manual required to operate our growler, just some simple instructions. Beer can only stay carbonated for so long. So close that growler lid tight if you plan on drinking it the next day. Beer is not going to taste fresh if it’s sitting for three days! Two days maybe, but if you still have it after ONE DAY then you should learn how to share. The best part is, when your empty… give your growler a good rinse and air dry. Putting it in the dishwasher will only trap soap and potentially sabotage your next fill. Drink amongst the equipment. Heck, we’ll show you around, as long as we have a brewer on hand. Also, there are no such things as dumb questions. If you’re a hardcore beer fan, conceptualize about recipes and pick our brains. We have Nitro taps as well, we can tell you all about them as long as you’re willing to listen.
New craft beer brewery looks to reflect community variety Sometimes you can tell a lot about a place by its name — and that is truly accurate for Foamers’ Folly Brewing Co. A typical dictionary says “foam” is “a mass of small bubbles formed on or in liquid, typically by agitation or fermentation: (e.g.) a beer with a thick head of foam.” The Urban Dictionary tells us that a “foamer” is term used by railroad employees to describe a railroad enthusiast or rail fan community at large. As in, “Man, we got some foamers ahead taking pictures. They need to just get a life and find something to do besides hang around the tracks all day,” says a train engineer to its conductor. And Foamers’ Folly Brewing Company’s venue pays tribute to this community heritage. “The track crosses Harris Road, which is right in front of us, and probably about half a block up from us,” explains Jodie Prevolsek, manager of the aptly named “Foamers’ Folly,” the North Fraser’s newest craft brewery. And, like a foamer is obsessed with trains, Foamers’ Folly Brewing Co. is obsessed with craft beer. And this company’s passion and it pushes its brewers full steam ahead in search of what’s new and next. “We’re trying new things and we’re having fun,” Prevolsek says. “We like to really kind of dig into the community that we’re in.” Foamers’ Folly staff is looking for local community folks to come in and get involved in the brewery’s craft beer menu too.
“We’d like our local regulars to tell us what they like; give us some feedback,” Prevolsek says. “We’re pretty casual over here but respectful. Everybody’s included, and we really like to kind of push that.” And while Foamers’ Folly is the first craft brewery in Pitt Meadows, its brewers are definitely not new to the craft. With more than 20 years of collective brewing experience Foamers’ Folly is, first and foremost, about making outstanding beer — beer that stands out. So far the new brewery is just getting started on its beer selections and its vision for playing a role in this local community but it has put out an interesting variety of beers that have piqued local interest. “At the moment we have six varieties of craft beer, but we have up to 20 taps so we’re hoping to fill up some more and do some follies, which are the really fun batches,” Prevolsek explains, adding, “which is where we got the name from, ‘Foamers’ Folly.’ Those would be trials and seasonals and fun stuff.” Designed for experimentation, this brew house is laid out a little different than most. For starters, this brewery took the same sky’s-the-limit approach to its construction as it did for its beers. The space is literally filled to the rafters with brewing potential. Instead of the typical large-capacity brew house coupled with a mini pilot test system, Foamers’ Folly decided to take the track less-travelled and it built two full brew houses under one roof. The main system — at 2,000 litres — produces the brewery’s mainstays,
while the other setup, at 500 litres, is where brewers get to play. Experimental beer editions will be put on tap and customers can tell the brewery if they want more — or beers added to the brewery’s regular lineup; the good, the bad, and the folly. Among its popular beer brands, Foamers’ Folly has offered its customers have been: Folly Batch Number One IPA, SMASH Pale Ale, Bandit Brown Ale, Brethren Belgian ISA, Blacksnake Porter, Crystal Palace Wheat Ale, Bitter Bitter English Bitter, Foamers’ Express Double IPA. The company’s passion for craft beer shows. “We have a Crystal Palace Wheat Ale,” starts Prevolsek. “It’s light in colour. It’s one of our most popular beers for people making the transition to a craft beer. When we first opened we had a SMASH Pale Ale that was really popular but we’re all out of that for now.” Prevolsek continues, “Then we had our original IPA up there too, our Folly Batch Number One IPA and that sold out. So we’re working on another batch of the IPA, our Hot Box, but that’s not out yet. Should be maybe in the next week.” And Foamers’ Folly offers beers that are lower or higher in alcohol content than your typical pint of ale or lager. “Our session ale is lower in alcohol content than an IPA but it still has that trademark bitterness, although not as much, explains Prevolsek. “It’s the Belgian right now that’s up there. The Belgian ISA. It’s called Brethren.” Prevolsek adds, “Our Foamers’ Express is a double IPA. So people usually,
when they come in, they get a pint of our beer and it’s a 16-ounce (glass). We like to offer the double IPA in a 12-ounce because it has a higher alcohol content, at eight per cent. It has a lovely flavour as well.” And Foamers’ Folly is soon to get started on building its patio for approaching seasons.
We¼re looking for our local people in our community to become involved; to tell us what they like; give us some feedback.” Manager Jodie Prevolsek “So we’re ripping out the front wall there. We have a garage door already in place. We’re going to push our patio as far to the sidewalks as the city will allow,” Prevolsek says. “We’re going to have a beautiful place to have some beers in the summer and the spring time and just chill out with some music and talk with some like-minded people.” Foamers’ Folly Brewing Co. has: 55 seats, 20 taps for serving its own beers, a growler fill station, wines and cider for non-beer drinkers, pizza and other food available. The “family friendly” brewery lounge (kids accompanied by an adult are welcome) is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday. One Stop Cycle Shop

by Rob Laluk
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Buy the proper bike. In a world with ever-increasing selections, make sure the bike will suit your purpose. Buy the proper size. A bike specialist can ensure you are riding a bike that is both safe and comfortable for you. Make sure it’s safe. A smaller bike shop will both build the bike in-house, and tune it up when it leaves the store. Make sure it stays safe. Most bike shops will offer a year’s free adjustments just to make sure the bike stays safe. Get the accessories you want. Bike shops will have all the accessories you could want. Make sure you get the proper ones for your bike.
Now that the store is in its new location at Meadowvale Shopping Centre, Rob is busy getting bikes ready for the upcoming spring cycling season.
Pitt Meadows Cycle — Your One Stop Shop For Everything Cycling Rob Laluk is all about his community. He was born and raised in Pitt Meadows, has lived in Pitt Meadows all his life, and is a business owner in Pitt Meadows, opening up Pitt Meadows Cycle in February 2014. Laluk has been in and out of the biking industry for many years. After a career as a mortgage broker, Laluk had the opportunity to purchase the Local Ride and the shop became Pitt Meadows Cycle. Since moving to Pitt Meadows, his shop has kept a little history from the previous area bike shops, while also carving out its own identity. “You could describe me as a bit of a shop rat back in the early days,” Laluk said. “Growing up in Pitt Meadows your bike was your transportation. You rode your bike everywhere. I went to Pitt Meadows elementary and Pitt Meadows high school and now I own Pitt Meadows Cycle. A lot of people know me as Rob the bike guy. It just all made sense.” Laluk sees Pitt Meadows as a growing outdoor community. “People that live here are outdoors people. It seems to me that everyone runs or rides,” he said. “When I first opened up the business people
asked, ‘why would you open in Pitt Meadows because it’s so small you will serve everyone in three months and be done,’ but that’s not true. This is a growing cycling community. Burke Mountain is very close, so I’m serving the people in Poco too and of course Maple Ridge. “People are pretty happy to have a Pitt Meadows bike shop — it’s been a while coming. There is a real need here.” Pitt Meadows Cycle is a family bike shop that caters to young and old. “My philosophy is to get everyone riding and then keep them riding,” Laluk says. “I want to be the kind of shop that when you walk in the door and you start a sentence with ‘do you have a,’ my answer is ‘yes.’ Do I have the exact one you are looking for, maybe not, but if you need to get riding today, I can get you riding.” As the only bike shop in Pitt Meadows, it comes with the responsibility to cater to many different cycling enthusiasts. “I have to cater to Pitt Meadows. If I tried opening up a niche shop, it wouldn’t work,” he says. “Someone tried to open up a BMX shop a while back and they were done in
two years because there is just not enough BMX riding. My shop has to cater to everyone.” By the time you read this, Pitt Meadows Cycle will have set up shop in their new retail space beside Shoppers Drug Mart at the Meadowvale Shopping Centre.
My philosophy is to get everyone riding and then keep them riding. — Rob Laluk
The new space is larger, allowing Laluk to offer a greater selection of makes and models and more accessories. Plus, he intends to be much busier and will be hiring more staff — another positive for the overall business community in Pitt Meadows. Pitt Meadows Cycle is Laluk’s first crack at opening up a business. Although there have been challenges, he is excited about the future. “I feel much happier doing this. I’m a people person. I see on average 60 people on a Saturday here in the shop, whereas if I saw 60 people
working in the mortgage industry in a year, that would be a really good year,” he says. “It’s been a long time since people could walk or ride to a community bike shop. It’s definitely a start. When you first open up a business it’s tough in your first couple of years, but now that I’m on my feet and moving to the new location it’s time to start concentrating on becoming that community hub.” Laluk is also in the midst of forming the Pitt Meadows Cycle Riding Club and offering a number of community rides. It’s just another way he sees of the shop evolving into that ‘community hub.’ “I don’t believe in selling a bike without providing an opportunity to ride it,” he says. “Some people don’t like to ride on their own, so by providing them with an outlet and a club to ride together it betters their experience. And I like to ride with my customers. It’s one thing to see the smile on their face when they leave the shop, but it’s another thing to see the smile on their face when they are out on the dyke or a trail enjoying their bike.”

Kevin Nosworthy with administrative assistants Crystal Heppner and Debbie Nosworthy
Avanti Has The Right Plan For Business. Kevin Nosworthy is known to some as the King of Kensington—a nod to the 1970s TV character known for helping friends and neighbours solve problems. But unlike the CBC sitcom, Nosworthy doesn’t run a convenience store. Instead, he’s at the helm of Avanti Planning Group, which assists firms of all sizes in every industry in offering group benefit plans to their employees. As a longtime resident and insurance broker and consultant in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows community, Nosworthy has helped many friends and neighbours— his clients—find solutions. “I absolutely love what I do. I’m very fortunate I’m in a place like Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. It’s still a growing community.” he says. For 15 years Nosworthy has been marketing the Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan, for which Avanti has exclusive rights to in this community. In that time he’s gotten to know many local business leaders. Nosworthy got his start in sales and marketing at BC Tel Yellow Pages, which gave him a dozen years’ experience in finding solutions for small businesses. He made the jump to insurance and founded Avanti Planning Group. His company has since won multiple recognitions for marketing excellence, including a business excellence award from
the Chamber of Commerce serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. His community involvement includes coaching minor hockey and soccer for 28 years and serving as a Meadow Ridge Rotary Club member for 10 years. Nosworthy is now serving as a local chamber director, having recently been elected to the board. Nosworthy has also been involved with other community projects, including organizing a recent drive to have a street in Maple Ridge named after Bob Shantz. Shantz, a community leader and volunteer, passed away unexpectedly in August. “He was involved in every aspect involving caring in this community, and I just wanted to make sure he wouldn’t be forgotten,” said Nosworthy. Nosworthy and his firm specialize in managing health and dental plans for local businesses. Avanti also offers customers other insurance solutions—life, disability, critical illness, travel—and manages customers’ investment needs. His clients range from small owner-operator to large firms with over 500 employees. “I feel my experience is that I can bring myself to those people and know how to deal with them—and treat them the same, whether they’re an owneroperator or have 500 employees.
They’re all important to me.” Nosworthy markets the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan because he believes in it. The plan offers stability in an insurance market where other insurance company rates— depending on usage, the market, dental fees and drug costs—can fluctuate, sometimes as much as 25 per cent in a given year. Rates for chamber plan members
“Customer service, customer service, customer service. It¼s important to service each client the way you would want to be treated. ” Kevin Nosworthy aren’t based on the company’s usage or even the market climate in B.C., but rather all of Canada. Members buy into a large group—similar to how Costco operates. What businesses get is a dependable plan with great service and stable prices, and owners don’t have to worry about market fluctuation. “What I try to do is fit the business with the insurance company. And if it’s a smaller business, the chamber is a good fit because of that stability,” he said. “With the Chamber of Commerce, it’s Canada’s only fully-pooled plan. It’s not based on what you do; it’s based on 30,000 other businesses
right across Canada. We encourage clients to use their plan.” In meeting with customers, Nosworthy takes time to gain their trust, learn about their business and find a plan that’s the best fit according to their needs and budget. It’s a formula that’s proven to work. Some time ago Nosworthy set up a plan with the owners of a local medium-sized company. After that, a much larger company in another province bought them out. Those original owners went their separate ways, but three have since returned to Nosworthy for health and dental plans for new ventures. “Customer service, customer service, customer service,” says Nosworthy, whose team also includes Debbie Nosworthy and Crystal Heppner. Nosworthy says he loves talking with people and finding solutions for them, and watching companies that might start as an owneroperator grow into larger businesses that want to offer their employees a benefits plan. “I deal with a lot of businesses, and I truly believe you’ve got to love what you’re doing.”

How many seats are in the restaurant? There are 75 seats and a private room that seats 30. What is the most popular dish? The lobster mac n’ cheese and Bruce’s Market halibut are both top choices on the menu. Everything on the menu is made in-house. There is no outside preparation. The popular wild mushroom soup for example — every mushroom is chopped by hand in our kitchen. The restaurant offers 30 wines by the glass and has an extensive selection of wines on its wine list and is a strong supporter of the B.C. wine industry. This is an establishment that prides itself on shopping local, supporting local and brings in only the top quality in food, serves gourmet cocktails and has a diverse menu for a variety of tastes.
Dr. Ed and Nancy Auersperg and Mario and Magda Bitoiu want every guest to enjoy a perfect dining experience.
Chameleon: changing the restaurant experience in Maple Ridge Mario and Magda Bitoiu from Chameleon bring a love and passion for food that is evident in their faces when they talk about the Chameleon. They will celebrate their fourth anniversary of the popular restaurant in Maple Ridge in July. The Bitoiu’s love what they do. They love the community and they love being able to offer a dining experience for varying tastes in Maple Ridge. Mario has been involved in the restaurant business for the past 25 years. He has been involved in several ventures in Vancouver and when they chose to move to Maple Ridge in 1996, they fell in love with the community. “The first approach was through the municipality to try and find out about Maple Ridge and the area. They were very pleasant, very helpful,” Mario recalls. “Then I went to the old Safeway where Thrifty’s is now and I felt that I was already part of this community. People were helpful, smiling, nice conversations. I came home to my wife and said I found the city that you are going to love — Maple Ridge. That was the drive to here — to bring the family — to start a new business. “We are very thankful to the
community to be a part of our success in Maple Ridge.” Mario and Magda, along with restaurant owners Dr. Ed and Nancy Auersperg, (longtime residents of Maple Ridge), wanted to start something different in the community — a restaurant that catered to a diverse clientele.
“We could not be a successful business without the love and support of this great community..” Mario Bitoiu
“It goes with the name Chameleon, which is always changing colours. We change our menu to suit the needs and desires of our customers.” Magda says they feel the Maple Ridge community needed a restaurant like this and it has translated into a dedicated following. “I think because our prices are affordable and we can serve such a diverse clientele,” she says. “If you are 17 and you want to take your girlfriend on a date, you can have a burger, or if you are celebrating your 20th anniversary you can have a beautiful glass of wine and a wonderful meal.”
The concept for the restaurant was developed by the four of them over a nice dinner and bottle of wine. It was actually Nancy that came up with the name.
Every weekend the restaurant is full, with a great vibe at the bar and throughout the restaurant.
Mario explains that, “We saw a need to create something that Vancouver would have, but a place where you don’t have to drive to Vancouver to have a nice dinner, a nice ambience, a nice bottle of wine. We have a very diverse menu. You can get everything from flat breads to burgers to fish entries, some Italian. I would describe our menu as seasonal West Coast that changes with the seasons.
The four of them have a vision for the restaurant as a business that supports the local community as much as possible.
“It’s just a warm and inviting place,” says Mario.
“For me, shopping local allows my business to be successful and allows other businesses to be successful,” he says. “We have done all our renovations through local contractors. We buy all of our spices, produce and products all in the area. All of our employees — 25 — all live in Maple Ridge.
We could not be a successful business without the love and support of this great community.” The restaurant is also helping to put the area on the movie map as well. More than 20 productions have been filmed at the restaurant including six in the past two months. “The producers look at us as a New York style restaurant in Maple Ridge. For this last shoot they converted our space into a bistro, a fine dining restaurant, a bar in a hotel and a café,” says Mario. “I guess my husband’s vision worked well,” Magda adds with a laugh.

Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies Group: Building Stronger Communities Community involvement is paramount for the Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies Group (JMIA). Tom Meier and Bruce Johnston first joined forces in 1973 when they were door-to-door salesmen for State Farm. They bought their first brokerage together that year and today have 450 employees in locations throughout the Lower Mainland, Okanagan and Cariboo. Through their years of service, the company has fostered lasting relationships between their employees and the communities in which they serve. When you walk into the head office in Maple Ridge you will see the many sports teams and organizations that JMIA supports. Then when you walk into Meier’s office, you see more photos of young sports teams, community awards and recognitions. The awards and recognitions speak to the values that Meier and Johnston have instilled in their employees right from the start. Meier himself has been recognized as Maple Ridge’s person of the year and citizen of the year. Last October he was named the Insurance Person of the Year. “It’s quite an honour. It really is what this business is all about,” said Meier. In the past, Meier has been president of the local Chamber
of Commerce, on the Business Improvement Association, various service organizations and lots of efforts with the hospital. “I may not be as involved now as I was in the past, but the reason I was so involved is because the community has been good to Johnston Meier Insurance Agencies Group, so I felt I should give back,” Meier said. “I try to instill those values in my employees, but the person has to want to do it and has to value what it means to give back to their community. We’ve been lucky to have so many employees who have families and want to be involved in their communities that they live and work in.” Garrin Mang has been with the company going on nine years. In those years he’s coached baseball for 11 and football for eight. Having the ability to volunteer and coach in the community and being encouraged to do so was one of the major factors on why he chose to join the company. “They allow me to do this and continue to support it. Our offices will donate to the communities they are in,” Mang said. “I work out of our head office in Maple Ridge, but they donate money that supports the teams I coach in Mission, so that really stood out to me — my boss is going to encourage me. It was a really
positive message sent and a big factor when I joined the company.” Mang feels having companies like Johnston Meier supporting its communities helps to build stronger communities.
“We¼ve been lucky to have so many employees who have families and want to be involved in their communities that they live and work in.” “I believe strongly in sports. It got me through life and to where I am today,” he said. “It taught me about teamwork and camaraderie and I just believe that you can build a better community and touch a lot more people than just drawing a dollar figure out of them and helping to insure your business. It’s much more than that. We build relationships and it’s important to me. “I donate up to 30 hours a week, donate my weekends, so they can see that we care and that our company cares. I don’t get any flack, I get support and that’s a really nice feeling.” Dave Ebner has been with the company for 20 years working out of their Mission office.
He’s coached his son’s hockey team and daughter’s fastball team and now that they are older, he has turned his passions to the Mission Golf Club where he is on the board of directors. He said the company’s support has made a huge difference to a lot of different groups. “I don’t think I have had to asked if I could support any of these initiatives. If I think it is worthy and something that will benefit the community I pretty much have the green light, so that’s great to have that support. It’s an amazing company,” Ebner said. Wendy Heppner has lived and worked in Quesnel for 21 years and been with Johnston Meier for 13 years. She is a director on the Chamber of Commerce and president of Quesnel Business Networking. “I just feel that we are a good presence in this community,” she said. “We have probably the largest commercial space in the community, right on the corner of downtown. It’s important to give back. We have to be involved. We have to be out there. You can’t just write the cheques, you have to be out there and visible and show that you are putting in the time.”

Blinds and Window Coverings
Consumer
by Trish Kuffner
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Light and privacy. How much do you want and need? Bedrooms and media rooms usually need a room-darkening solution which will influence the style and fabric you choose. Decorating style. Is it traditional, formal, or contemporary? Take into account your style and colour scheme when choosing your window coverings. Safety. Are there young children and pets in your home? Choose cordless or motorized shades to keep little ones safe. Cleaning. How much time and effort do you want to spend cleaning? Louvered blinds can be a magnet for dust whereas roller and cell shades require a minimum amount of attention. Budget. Are you renovating one room or outfitting an entire house? Cost is determined by window size and number of windows as well as the style of window covering and fabric you choose.
Pair roller shades and inverted pleat side panels with one another for complete coverage.
Budget Blinds lifts the curtain on service & quality Trish and Wayne Kuffner have a simple business philosophy. It starts with service. “What we try to do is treat people the way we would want to be treated. To us, service is everything,” said Trish. The Kuffners own and operate Budget Blinds of the TriCities, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, offering customers window coverings in thousands of looks and hundreds of colours. Much of their business comes from referrals, and a long list of testimonials details why. “We really do put service first— we put our customers first. I have a quote in my office that says, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.“ That quote reminds our team that we don’t sell on price; we are about quality and service.” said Trish. Budget Blinds is Canada’s No. 1 window coverings franchise, giving customers access to a multitude of brands, styles and options to fit any budget. The Kuffners serve Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, along with the communities in the Tri-Cities, including Port Coquitlam, where the Budget Blinds showroom is located. Having owned the business for 10 years, the Kuffners were among the first to start a Budget Blinds franchise in Canada. The brand’s expansion here followed the
1992 founding of the company in the United States, where its concept of shop-at-home service for window coverings and home décor accessories was flourishing. After searching for a business of their own, the Kuffners found Budget Blinds. They did their research and knew it was the right fit. They started the business in their home. With a growing staff and increasing demand, the Kuffners soon opened a showroom as another way to showcase products to customers. Today, Budget Blinds is the largest window coverings franchise in the world. The firm’s 1,000 style consultants in Canada and the U.S. sell over 4,000 blinds every day, bringing customers the best brands of window coverings at the most competitive prices. Budget Blinds provides free in-home consultations, and also offers service to commercial clients, from schools to offices. Style consultants arrive with samples and swatches of all types of blinds, fabric and roman shades, shutters and curtains so customers can see how they look in their home first. More importantly, they listen to customers’ needs and learn what features are most important to them—be it light control, insulation or privacy. “Anything to do with window treatments is our specialty,”
said Trish, a mother of five whose son Josh works as office manager. “It’s all we do.” The Budget Blinds’ team does it all: measures windows, does the ordering, inspects window coverings on delivery and installs them perfectly. Each order also comes with a complimentary five-year No Questions Asked Warranty. That means if something happens to a window covering—even if a child is a little too creative with a crayon or a dog decides a drape is a good chew toy—it will be replaced one time within five years. There are many benefits to window coverings. They can provide security and privacy, save energy and even offer safety in children’s rooms. But perhaps the most dramatic benefit is the look. Many Budget Blinds’ customers buy window coverings as part of a renovation project. Style consultants can help provide advice for the best decorating solution, and the final result is impressive. “It makes a huge difference. You can transform a room by your window coverings,” said Trish. “Even just upgrading from the one-inch aluminum blinds to the two-inch faux-wood blinds can make a big difference. It modernizes the look quite a bit.” After window coverings are ordered, the job is turned
over to expert installer Ryan— Budget Blinds does all its own installations—to ensure a perfect fit. And if something isn’t quite right or if an order isn’t quite what a homeowner expected, Budget Blinds will work with every customer until they’re completely satisfied. It’s part of Budget Blinds’ promise of best quality and service, and finding solutions no matter the challenge.
“What we try to do is treat people the way we would want to be treated. To us, ser vice is everything.” Trish Kuffner One recent example is how the Budget team was able to make a difference in the lives of condo residents with sun-drenched floor-to-ceiling windows. They worked with the homeowners in selecting the right motorized drapes with thermal lining to keep the heat out in summer. “It’s beautiful when you see how it transforms from bare windows to a wall of beautiful fabric. It just makes a huge difference in the livability of their condo in the summertime,” said Trish.

by Michele Yonge
1.
There are old spills inside the fridge that won’t wipe off easily. Any ideas? MM: Use a cloth and a paste made from baking soda mixed with warm water (three parts baking soda to one part water); rinse with water.
2.
If degreaser doesn’t work, how should I remove greasy marks and soap build-up in the sink? MM: For greasy marks and soap build-up, sprinkle baking soda on the sides and bottom of the sink, then pour a little vinegar on top while the mixture is fizzing, rub gently with a clean non-scratch scouring pad and rinse clean with cold water.
3.
The microwave still smells like the popcorn my kids made in it a week ago. How can I remove the smell?MM: Easy! Fill a microwaveable container with two cups of water and add a little lemon juice. Put the microwave on high for three to five minutes.
4.
Do the washer and dryer need a clean too? MM: Absolutely! Set your washer to the longest wash cycle and make sure the water temperature is set to hot. Add two to three cups of white vinegar and about 1/3 cup of baking soda to the inside of your machine and start the cycle. Once it’s done, wipe the inside of the drum with a damp microfibre cloth, and wipe out any product dispensers. Clean the lint trap (every time you use the dryer) as well as inside the dryer duct. You may have to disconnect the dryer vent to clean it out. Check the owner’s manual to see how to do it safely. If the vent walls are coated with lint, you may have to replace the vent with a new one.
5.
My dishwasher smells inside, how can I get rid of the smell? MM: Use vinegar instead of the rinse aid product. Just pour vinegar into the rinse aid compartment; do this as often as needed.

Molly Maid: A Cleaning Name You Can Trust When is comes to cleaning services, Molly Maid is the number one choice among customers in Canada. A Canadian company founded in 1979, Molly Maid completes more than two million residential cleans every year worldwide. In the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area, franchisee Michele Yonge and her team, including her daughter Kylie, have been serving customers since 2012. But Yonge has more than 12 years in the Molly Maid business, as she has been the franchisee for Burnaby/New West/East Vancouver since 2004. “One of my good girlfriends owns the Calgary franchise. My kids were getting older and it kind of all fell into place to buy the Burnaby franchise,” she says. “A very good friend of mine owned the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows franchise and it just wasn’t working out for her, so it kind of fit in and worked for us.” “Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows is quite different from the Burnaby/ New West area. It’s more of a community feel and that was a change for me, to figure out the different dynamics, but we love having the Maple Ridge/ Pitt Meadows franchise.” Recently daughter Kylie has also become an owner of the business, joining her mom as the local
franchisee, after having managed the office for several years. The business has three cars and three teams of two women to serve their clients in Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. They recognize that there are many cleaning services in the marketplace, but Molly Maid is a trusted and recognizable brand that just can’t be compared to other cleaning companies. “Molly Maid is a Canadian company, so I think it is nice to support things that have been started in our own country. It’s been around for 35 years, so it has a long history of being a dependable, reliable, cleaning company,” says Yonge. “We use the same system across Canada, so our system and products are well-tested, our support office is fabulous for every aspect of our business. We have so much access to information, I just feel that is invaluable to me, my staff and our customers.” Molly Maid and their staff are WCB-certified, and have undergone strict records checks, so you can trust their staff when they come knocking on your door. “We are able to be dependable in the sense so that if your cleaning lady is sick someone else will show up,” she says. “In all the years that I have done Molly Maid I have never just not shown up. It’s just a reliable, consistent way
to have your house cleaned.”

And Molly Maid is a brand that you can trust.
Their professional cleaning service includes: detailed cleaning of bathrooms and kitchens, washing of floors and cupboard exteriors, dusting of baseboards, pictures, lamp shades, window sills, furniture and light fixtures, complete vacuuming of every room and spot-cleaning of walls.
“It’s nice that the staff show up in their blue cars with uniforms for seniors, so they don’t feel intimidated when they open up their doors,” Yonge says. “It’s nice that if customers do have a

complaint they can direct their concerns to me and not directly with the girls. I can then deal with that. I think the pressure of having someone in their house washing their kitchen floor and then telling them they don’t like the way it is being cleaned is very difficult, whereas they can call me and tell me that they are having a little issue and can you deal with it for me, is just reassuring. I can take on all those outside pressures that can make it more difficult.” Molly Maid offers a flexible and customized maid service at an affordable price, based on a free, no-obligation, in-home estimate. Yonge said their experience in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area has been fantastic, and they look forward to many more years serving their loyal customers. “There hadn’t been a ton of advertising or consistent advertising in the Maple Ridge/ Pitt Meadows area before I took over. Anytime someone new comes in it takes a while to establish that relationship and that trust,” she says. “It takes about a year before people can see that little bit of a change, and it’s a growing franchise for us... the community has been very supportive.” To find out more about Molly Maid and its services check out: www.mollymaid.ca.

Make sure you’re ready to buy a home and financially prepared. Have a budget and have talk to a mortgage specialist. Consider what you want to buy: house, condo or townhouse, and consider where you want to live—urban or rural. Always get an inspection to make sure there are no surprises. Keep your emotions in check. Making a purchase mistake could haunt you.
Offices located in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Langley
Re/Max Lifestyles Realty Agents Go The Extra Mile It started small—but the partners who created RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty 20 years ago had big dreams. Today, the real estate office is a market leader. Given its team of hard-working real estate agents committed to providing the best service possible to clients, it’s little wonder why. RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty specializes in helping clients purchase and sell detached homes, condominiums, townhouses, lots and developments. The office also has a property management division, assisting a growing number of clients with rental management of their investment properties. RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty boasts three offices—Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Langley—and has a roster of 55 realtors in the Ridge Meadows area alone. Affiliated with the office are services key to residential property transactions, including banking, notary and inspection services. “We offer the full gamut of what you‘ll need to buy or sell a home, or more importantly, to get the information that you need to make that decision
about whether you should or shouldn’t,” said Rainer Weininger, who owns the business with Gary Fraipont and Michele Bouchard. Becoming the market leader— and maintaining that position for years on end—is more than offering all the right services, it’s about having the right people. RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty agents go the extra mile and hold high ethical standards. They’re all full-time agents who are welltrained and avoid shortcuts. “We take pride in being an office that the clients can trust. Obviously with the continued repeat business that we get we’ve certainly won the loyalty of our clients. They keep coming back,” said Frank Budd, general manager. Weininger has been with the company since the beginning, when the office had nine agents. Despite a challenging market at the time RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty not only survived, but thrived. Over the next five years the team grew rapidly, and in August they’ll celebrate 20 years. Weininger said for almost all of the past 16 years, RE/MAX

they need to make a sensible choice at the end,” said Weininger.
“We have a very strong office with high-producing realtors, and we’ve had that for a long period of time,” he said.
The agents at RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty have that legal know-how and market knowledge—but they also have something a little less tangible: commitment to their community.
The communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have changed over the years, and so has technology. Today few realtors

are driving around at night with documents that need to be signed, as electronic communications have modernized the way business is done. The office is also ahead of others in moving to a paperless filing system, a greener system that allows realtors convenient access to documents. The business of buying and selling real estate has also become more demanding and complex, requiring agents to have a higher level of expertise than ever before. A contract that was one page two decades ago could now be 20 times as long. The reason is simple—to protect the client. “We want to make sure that the client has all the information that
As Budd describes, the office has lots of great people who are pillars in the community. Realtors with the company serve on boards of local charities and organizations and assist with the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. They also help those in need through an annual blanket drive and Thanksgiving meal, and by fundraising for the food bank and local Christmas charities. In addition, the RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty office itself dedicates a day each September to volunteer and raise money for the hospice. That willingness to go above-andbeyond is something clients of RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty agents already know. Some agents have helped on moving day due to an unforeseen situation, others have dug deep to find a home suitable for a client with an assistance dog, while others have put in extra time to assist out-of-town clients get their property in order. Said Budd: “When you’re dealing with a full-service real estate company like us, we just do things that make the buying and selling process as uneventful as possible.”

Treat the underlying causes of pain with Naturopathic Medicine At Maple Ridge Naturopathic Clinic an individual’s pain and other uncomfortable symptoms are seen as indicators of an imbalance in the body. As a result, the goal of treatment is not to simply get rid of the symptoms but, instead, to address the underlying imbalance that causes the symptoms.
“I have numerous tools at my disposal to treat what causes an individual¼s symptoms.” Dr. Jason Hughes
Dr. Jason Hughes, who has seen thousands of patients during his 14 years of practice, uses an eclectic approach to find treatments that best fit each individual’s needs. Because the same symptoms can arise in different people due to different causes, Dr. Hughes aims to treat each individuals particular imbalance, rather then just a “cookie cutter approach. The core principle of Naturopathic Medicine is “the healing power of nature,” which points to the idea that our own bodies have the most potent healing force known. In order to work with this innate self-healing ability, Dr. Hughes

When the underlying imbalances are addressed, symptoms no longer need to be expressed and people feel more vital.
Pain and Performance: chronic pain, acute trauma or injuries, loss of function, weakness, back and joint pain, headaches, loss of sensation, “pins & needles,” strains, sprains and “tweaks.”
“The therapies work incredibly well. I have numerous tools at my disposal to treat underlying imbalances that cause an individual’s symptoms,” said Dr. Hughes, who has won Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows News’ “A List,” which celebrates the community’s finest businesses, for the past four years. Dr. Hughes is skilled in the following areas: Clinical Nutrition, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Clinical Mind-Body Medicine, Intravenous Therapies, Oxidative Medicine – Ozone Therapy, Detoxification therapies, Homeopathy and Pharmaceutical Drugs (only when needed!). Other common issues: Sleep issues, insomnia, fatigue and low energy. “I don’t just treat the pain. I treat the imbalance that is causing the symptoms,” said Dr. Hughes. Dr. Hughes is an expert in the field of regenerative pain medicine and can help people remove obstacles to their healing. “Nerve pain doesn’t go away on its own. It’s chronic pain. But Naturopathic Medicine can relieve the pain by addressing what is causing it,” said Dr. Hughes.
Dr. Hughes is also an expert in several therapies to help people live pain free, including Neural Prolotherapy, which reduces inflammation in nerves that cause pain, restores function and allows for regeneration; Neural Therapy, which works specifically for muscle pain, scar problems and fascial problems that effect organ function; Prolotherapy and Prolozone Therapy, which target more degenerative joint issues that create pain and dysfunction; and Physical & Structural Therapies, which include adjustments, fascial and positional release and osteopathic “hands-on” therapies.

Hearing Clinic

3. 4. 5.
Two ears are better than one. For those with bilateral hearing loss, it is usually best to wear hearing aids on both ears. This allows for a greater improvement in localization of sound sources and understanding in speech. Check for wax in your ears. Some people are prone to earwax blockage in their ear canals and hearing aids. It is normal and healthy for our ears to generate wax. Earwax (cerumen) helps protect our ears from dust, foreign particles, and microorganisms. However, too much earwax can over time clog your hearing aids. If your hearing aid suddenly stops working and a fresh battery doesn’t help, consider having your doctor or hearing care professional check for wax blockage in your ear canal. Clean your hearing aids regularly. Many hearing aids are equipped with wax guards that protect the speaker feeding sound into the ear from earwax and a grill over the microphone(s) that shield the hearing aid from wind and dust. Periodically clean/replace the wax guards and microphone grills on the hearing aids or have your hearing care professional clean them for you. Hearing aids come in many sizes. There are many options when it comes to selecting the style of hearing aid. Hearing aids come in many sizes, ranging from small, discreetly all in the ear canal to all behind the ear. Each style has their pros and cons that can affect the comfort, retention, handling of the hearing instrument. Consult your hearing care professional to help you select which hearing aid is best suited for your ears and lifestyle. Hearing aid accessories Many modern hearing aids are compatible with a variety of manufacturer specific accessories to further improve your hearing. When selecting hearing aids, consider complementing them with accessories that can link your hearing aids to smartphones or your home stereo.

Colonial Hearing Clinic making a difference in people’s lives Everyone should have the ability to hear and hear properly. It can be frustrating getting old and losing the ability to hear properly. It can be confusing. It can be terrifying, but Gary Gee, owner/operator of Colonial Hearing Clinic Ltd in Maple Ridge aims to make the experience of getting a hearing aid as seamless as possible. Gee offers in and out of office services including home visits, and free hearing tests for seniors. “If they do need a hearing aid, I make my recommendations and we go from there,” Gee said. “Anyone off the street that is concerned about their hearing or maybe it’s a doctor’s referral, I do a quick screening test. If there is a hearing loss present, I will do a few further tests and if there are any red flags that concern me, I will send them off to a doctor to see what needs to be done. If a doctor then clears them, we are good to go. “In the situation where there are no red flags, then we continue on with the process. If the hearing is bad enough that they can benefit from a hearing aid, I’ll make recommendations on what they need. I offer a variety of price levels from entry level all the way to the high end.” Gee’s type of business and the service that he provides is a bit of a dying breed. To his knowledge he is the only independent
clinic left in Maple Ridge. “A lot of the independents are getting bought out by the hearing aid manufacturers,” he said. Gee admits he kind of fell into the business by accident. At his first day at Sears opening up an eye optical business, he met a man next door who was running the hearing business. “We started talking and after that he mentioned that if I would go back to school in two more years I would hire you and train you. I went home and applied for school and then stuck with him for five years and then decided to go off on my own,” Gee recalls. “My dad has been in this building for close to 40 years — he is the dentist next door. We all help each other. My parents have been fixtures in this community for a long, long time. Instead of purchasing or leasing another place, it just made sense for me to open up shop here.” Gee said he loves his clientele in Maple Ridge. “This is a good community. There are a lot of seniors here. I find the new apartment buildings in the area are senior independent living and care homes and I’m one of the few open on weekends. I always take calls. If my customers need me they can give me a call. I’m always open to helping them,” he said. “I concentrate on the customer service side. I want to
help people. I know that the big box stores concentrate more on the sales aspect, where I want to be there for the after care as well. I find it might be a two-to-three-week wait for a follow-up with some of the big box stores. For me, you can walk-in or a quick call a day before is all I need.”
“Seeing the big change from not being to hear to hear makes a big difference and I love being a part of that difference.” Gary Gee RHIP, Owner And Gee is committed to his customers throughout the whole process. “With hearing aids, it’s not the type of product where you buy it and then not come back,” he said. “There is after care service. Simple things like checking for earwax, batteries, etc. Hearing aids are expensive, but what people don’t realize is that the after care service is part of what I offer. After the hearing aid is purchased I don’t charge for the small in-office repairs or servicing. “Making sure the client understands how to use the hearing aid properly is a big thing. With all the new technology out there it’s important to make sure the client has all the information they
need to make the right choice.” And the satisfaction for Gee is seeing the life changes in his customers. “The satisfaction of people being able to hear better is what it is all about,” Gee said. “The customers that I see are generally at their stage in life that they need help and it’s quite rewarding to see that they can hear better when they have been struggling to hear. Some of these people who come in have been struggling for years and years. Seeing the big change from not being to hear to hear makes a big difference.
