Fire victims thankful for community support Angie Mindus Staff Writer Food and other necessities are pouring in for a couple who lost everything in a fire at Green Acres Mobile Home Park Friday morning.

“We are so thankful to everyone for

everything,” said Jake Hilton, whose parents Jack and Carol Hilton have moved in with him after they escaped with only the clothes on their back when fire ripped through their home at about 9 a.m.

Hilton said the community response

has been overwhelming for the family, who has received dinners, clothing and even replacement hockey gear after Jake’s son’s gear was lost in the blaze.

“My son didn’t even miss a beat. He had all new gear by the next day donated

by Total Ice and KidSport. You just don’t forget these things — it tugs at your heart strings,” Jake said.

At the scene Friday morning, Jack said he was in bed when his wife Carol starting yelling for him.

“I couldn’t figure out what they were all

screaming about so I got up and then all I could see was a wall of smoke.”

Hilton said there was barely a way to get out of the bedroom as the fire quickly spread so the couple escaped out the front window.

Hilton was devas-

tated when he realized the fire would claim pictures of his grandsons playing hockey Lynn Geier, a longtime friend and neighbour who called 9-1-1 when she saw the fire at about 9 a.m., comforted Hilton at the scene.

“I’m just sick about

it. What a dreadful, dreadful loss for them,” said Geier.

Two neighbouring homes were also damaged as a result of the fire.

The blaze prompted a swift response from the Williams Lake Fire Department, BC Hydro and RCMP.

Beloved teacher, wife and mother mourned after snowmobile accident Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Students, staff and the community of Williams Lake are reeling after a Valentine’s Day sweetheart ride turned tragic Sunday claiming the life of 45-year-old Laura Kaufman Storoschuk.

Robin Storoschuk said he and his wife, Laura, were spending the weekend on a commemorative ride for Brenda Jelley, who passed away last month.

“We went out Saturday with 29 of our really good friends,” Robin

said Monday. “It was a 100-mile trip through the Cariboo River and Ghost Lake and then we spent the night at Wells.”

On Saturday evening he said they had a beautiful dinner and dance and awoke Sunday to fresh snow.

“It was so innocent how it happened, just so innocent,” Robin said of the accident.

“We were playing in the powder and she hit a snow bank.”

Through his tears, Robin said he never called Laura his wife.

“I called her my life.

She lived life to the full-

est. She had this T-shirt that said ‘Fear is temporary. Regret is forever.’ That’s going to be on her headstone.”

School District 27 Superintendent Mark Thiessen said Laura was an excellent and well-loved teacher at Lake City Secondary School.

“We were very saddened to hear of her passing yesterday,” Thiessen said Monday.

“Our condolences to her family during this very difficult time. As we know that this will also be a difficult time for staff and students, we have put extra sup-

ports in place at the school.”

Laura and Robin were together for 27 years and have two daughters, Hannah and Chloe.

Laura was a wellloved science and biology teacher at Lake City Secondary School, and the school’s golf instructor and coach.

LCSS principal Gregg Gaylord said everyone at the school is devastated.

“She was a great teacher but even better person,” Gaylord said. “It’s really tough, there’s a lot of grief but the staff and students

are supporting each other.”

Meanwhile, members of the local golfing community are also remembering Laura’s contribution to the sport.

Williams Lake Golf and Tennis Club director of golf operations Tyler Brouilette said despite just moving to Williams Lake last season he witnessed the impact Laura had at the course.

“She was very close with a great number of my young staff and a huge contributor to junior development at our club,” Brouilette

said. “She volunteered her time selflessly and will be sadly missed.

“She was an amazing golfer and had a swing most men would envy.”

The Williams Lake RCMP said they were notified of the accident at 1:06 p.m. Sunday when a SPOT beacon was set off at Yank’s Peak.

BC Ambulance Service and Central Cariboo Search Rescue were called in and members of CCSAR were dispatched by helicopter.

Two people trained in first aid happened upon the scene and as-

sisted until Laura was flown off the mountain to an awaiting ambulance. “ U n fo r t u n at e ly upon arrival at the hospital, it was determined she had succumbed to her injuries,” said North District Cpl. Dave Tyreman.

Robin said earlier on Sunday in the morning Laura placed a yellow rose in the snow for her friend Brenda Jelley and another friend took a photograph.

“Rick and Brenda were really close friends of ours,” Rob said. “It’s crazy how close things together happen.”

At the time the victim told the Tribune she could see no reason for the unprovoked attack but did notice her lit cigarette was gone after the man left.

Byron said Tuesday he believes the inci-

dents are related and requests the public contact police if they see anyone in the area matching that description.

Again, the suspect was described as riding a black BMX bike with black handle bars.

Victims have estimated he is about six feet tall and has longer brown hair wearing blue pants.

Public meeting to explore rail tie burning proposal Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Atlantic Power’s permit amendment application to burn railway ties at its energy plant in Williams Lake will be explored at a community meeting next week.

Topics to be discussed include the permitting process and where it’s at, how air quality is monitored, and the present and future status of Atlantic Power’s ash landfill in Williams Lake, said Bette McLennan, one of the meeting’s organizers.

“We’ve sent out invitations to the Cariboo Regional District board, Williams Lake City Council and School District 27 board of trustees to attend,” McLennan said, adding everyone is welcome.

Atlantic Power was also invited to the meeting but declined as the company awaits a final decision on the permit.

“We’re in the process of finalizing our technical analysis report and public consultation report to the Ministry of Environment,” said Cam McAlpine, communications spokesperson for the company. “That public consultation report includes 50-plus pages of questions and answers that we’ve received from the public, many of them touching on the three specific questions we were asked to address on Feb. 25.”

The company’s reports will form part of the record once the decision is made, and will be available to the public, McAlpine added.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Environment confirmed Tuesday no decision has been made on the application to date.

“The ministry is awaiting the submission of the consultation package and technical assessment review,” a ministry spokesperson stated in an e-mail, noting once

Atlantic Power’s request to burn railway ties is the focus of an upcoming community meeting in Williams Lake. that information is received the ministry will have a better idea of the expected timeline for a decision.

Retired forester Jim Hilton, one of the meeting’s organizers said next week’s meeting follows on the heels of several smaller meetings that have already taken place with various groups around the city.

“There are definitely a number of groups that aren’t satisfied with some of the infor-

mation out there about the proposal,” Hilton said, noting in organizing the meeting they are trying to remain neutral even though people have strong views.

“Our concern is that people don’t even know about Atlantic Power’s proposal to burn railway ties,” Hilton said.

“We are realizing it is important yo remove all the jargon and simplify the information so that people can understand the process.”

Rodger Hamilton, who is retired from the Ministry of Environment, has been gathering some information about air quality modelling and how the permitting process works that will be shared at the meeting.

The meeting takes place Thursday, Feb. 25 at Thompson Rivers University at 6 p.m.

Ripples in time

t took 100 years, but physicists announced last week they’ve observed “ripples in the fabric of space time called gravitational waves, arriving at Earth from a cataclysmic event in the distant universe.”

This, they say, confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 theory of relativity.

The scientists, who are associated with Advanced LIGO, the U.S.’s $1.1 billion Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (whew) are excited about this, as they now have an “unprecedented new window onto the cosmos.” Translation — they can see farther into the universe than ever before.

Now I’ve lived a long and happy life without knowing a thing about gravitational waves. What caught my eye in this story is that when Einstein made his prediction a century ago, it was thought to be a “bold leap” of the imaginaFrench tion. Made me Connection wonder how many Diana French of today’s scientific theories will take a 100 years to be proven right. Or wrong. I don’t know how if any of Einstein’s peers pooh-poohed his theory, but some of today’s climate scientists have trouble agreeing. If the believers in climate change and what is causing it are correct, taking even a few decades to prove it or agree could be too late. *** Slumber Lodge was on last night’s Committee of the Whole agenda, under “Remedial action order.” I’m guessing council wants the owner to do something about the empty building, and so they should. However, every time I look out my window I see the Cariboo Lodge building which has been sitting empty longer than the Slumber Lodge has. What about that? *** Celebrated businessman and controversial TV star Kevin O’Leary, a possible candidate for the Conservative party leadership, startled people last week when he announced he doesn’t want Canada to be involved in any campaign in the Middle East. We should be forging peace instead. He says Canada has the moral authority to be the country that can go anywhere in the world, and “after everyone is finished killing each other, to keep the peace.”

Wonders never cease. I didn’t think I’d ever agree with Mr. O’Leary on anything.

Speech hits right notes The 2016 Speech from the Throne contains several items that give hope for the future.

There is a focus on agriculture and protecting local food supplies, attention to climate change and First Nations issues, and pledges to do something about the soaring price of housing that could lock a generation out of home ownership.

Near the beginning of the document, there is a section that would have seemed bizarre just a few short years ago.

British Columbians are warned about the economic trap that has enveloped Alberta.

“Over the decades, Alberta lost its focus,” said the Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon, speaking for Premier Christy Clark’s Liberal government. “They expected their resource boom never to end, failed to diversify their economy and lost control of government spending.”

For decades, and particularly during the 1990s when the NDP were in power in B.C., it was popular to emphasize how much B.C. could learn from Alberta. It seemed B.C.

was somehow to blame for not sitting atop a giant lake of oil during a time of rising fossil fuel prices.

Now, unfortunately for Albertans, the bust that follows all booms has arrived.

And it turns out that rather than wisely investing, successive Conservative governments squandered the oil-generated wealth on government spending and low taxes.

We shouldn’t be too quick to point fingers. B.C. has a more diversified economy, but we still depend on many natural resources that are subject to the rising and falling tides of the world economy. And our own government is still going forward with plans for liquefied natural gas — albeit more slowly.

It’s good that we’re wary of falling into Alberta’s trap. But hopefully our government will learn the larger lesson — that there is no economy so successful that it can’t be dealt a blow by factors entirely outside the control of any premier or legislature.

City’s image an issue Editor: Last week’s Williams Lake Tribune/Weekend Advisor included two unrelated articles that, if you think about it, are connected.

The first was an article was about promotional videos being produced to attract doctors to the Cariboo.

The second was a column about Atlantic Power burning treated ties and the economics of burning logging debris instead.

If Williams Lake was to become Western Canada’s disposal site for creosote-treated ties, would that also be included in the doctor promotional videos?

Obviously, I am being sarcastic, but my point is that there are unintended consequences to burning treated ties in this facil-

ity.

In addition to the health risks, burning ties will create an image problem for this town that will be hard to overcome.

Atlantic Power is saying the grinder that would be installed for the ties would allow logging waste to be more economically processed, which would allow some of the logging debris to be utilized.

This idea has several flaws, one of which is that only a portion of the logging waste can be hauled cost effectively to town.

The branches, tops and bucking waste need to be processed in the bush because they can’t be hauled efficiently (too much air space in the loads).

This means that only a portion of the logging waste could be utilized and burning would still

be required in the bush.

For bush grinding of logging debris to be a viable option for Atlantic Power, instead of rail ties, BC Hydro must pay more for the power.

There is no doubt that bush grinding the roadside logging debris is a more expensive option than burning rail ties but, I would be curious to know how the cost compares to the other alternative green energy options that BC Hydro has purchased, or is considering, such as run-ofthe-river, wind, tidal, etc.

Keep in mind the added cost for the logging debris option flows into this community in the form of processing and hauling jobs.

“I wasn’t here at the time of the protest, I was attending a youth gang violence forum in Williams Lake,” Louie said. “Apparently the RCMP removed him from the gym and a woman from a southern Shuswap community began ripping up ballots.”

It was decided after that to shut the polling station at Sugar Cane down completely.

“Those who engaged in the protest have taken away individual community members’ rights to exercise their vote and have interrupted a legal process, leaving the band to deal with it,” Louie said as more voters arrived at the gym only to learn the polling station was closed.

It is believed the protesters are against the signing of a treaty and had earlier encouraged

Williams Lake Indian Band Chief Anne Louie members to vote no to the referendum, which was asking members if they wanted to proceed to the next stage of the treaty process.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, NStQ communications manager Brad McGuire said the other polling stations at Canim Lake, Soda Creek, Canoe Creek and Dog Creek were remaining open until 8 p.m. as originally scheduled.

“Leadership will have to meet to decide

what to do next,” McGuire said of the situation at Sugar Cane, noting he witnessed there were eight to 12 people participating in the protest.

Louie said recently the Southern Shuswap Tribal Council wrote a letter to WLIB community members asking them to vote “no” in the referendum.

“To me that’s illegal interruption because they aren’t voting members of Williams Lake, Soda Creek,

Canim Lake, Canoe Creek/Dog Creek, the communities involved with this treaty. They seem to think they represent all Secwepemc but they don’t.”

Leadership could have made the decision to go forward to the next stage of the treaty process without taking it to a vote, but chose to engage all of the communities’ members, Louie said, noting it is unfortunate that a few individuals can interrupt a process.

Northern Shuswap members vote in favour of continuing treaty negotiations Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The Northern Shuswap Tribal Council and its affiliated NStQ Treaty Group have received a mandate to move forward in the BC treaty process after a referendum vote held Thursday.

Community members of Stswecem’c/ Xgat’tem First Nation (Dog Creek/Canoe Creek), Tsq’escen’ (Canim Lake Indian Band), Xat’sull (Soda Creek Indian Band, and T’exelc (Williams Lake Indian Band) voted on the following ballot question: “Do you support the recommendation of the NStQ Leadership Council to proceed to Final Agreement Negotiations?”

Results of the referendum released by NStQ Friday stated at Canim Lake Band of 458 eligible voters, 125 voted yes and 84 voted no.

At Soda Creek of 336 eligible voters, 90 voted yes and 48 voted no.

At Canoe Creek and Dog Creek of the 582 eligible voters, 113 voted yes and 72 voted no.

“As chief of the SXFN, I welcome the positive results of our AIP vote and congratulate Stswecem’c Xgattem membership for voting,” stated Chief Patrick Harry, Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. “We have chosen to continue to the final stage of negotiation in the BC Treaty process. With this mandate, SXFN will return to the table with greater determination to negotiate a final agreement that will see more of our traditional SXFN territory returned.”

No numbers were released from the vote at Williams Lake Indian Band because mid-way through voting day Thursday, the polling

station was closed due to an aggressive protestor who smashed a ballot box and another who ripped up some ballots.

A full re-vote for members of WLIB will take place on March 15, 2016.

The vote was not on the NStQ Treaty itself, a process which the NStQ has been involved in since 1994, the NStQ said in a press release.

“This referendum

determines whether the NStQ membership wish to continue into the final negotiations stage (Stage Five) of the six-stage made-inBC Treaty Process. If membership votes “yes” to moving forward into Stage Five, that process can take anywhere from three to five years to complete,” the press release stated, noting once a final agreement is negotiated, NStQ membership will conduct a Mines Act Permit No. M-200

Marin Patenaude will be in concert at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre Friday.

Marin Patenaude and Flatland Peaks are on stage for the next Safety Meeting concert this Friday, Feb. 19 at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre.

Marin already has a name carved out for herself in the Cariboo and the Lower Mainland, as an amazingly talented vocalist and songwriter, says event organizer Brandon Hoffman.

Of course the Cariboo scene knows her from acts such as the Little Horsefly Country Band, but she has been known to cameo with acts such as Pugs and Crows, and has a pretty insane all-star cast appearing on her upcoming record.

Marin will be making the trip up to showcase the tunes on her upcoming record, with Flatland Peaks opening the night.

Flatland Peaks is a crew of young local folks, shredding on violin, banjo, and set to a nice earthy rhythm section.

Tickets for Marin Patenaude and Flatland Peaks are available at Red Shreds at a suggested $15.

Two new arts events reflect theme of diversity The Williams Lake Community Arts Council is hosting two new events in keeping with its Reflecting Diversity theme, says arts council co-ordinator Venta Rutkauskas.

“The goal is to provide programming and events open to all ages and artists of all levels, celebrating the diversity of our creative community,” Rutkauskas says. “Reflecting Diversity builds on our organization’s mandate to enrich the public’s experience through the arts, while offering means of education and meaningmaking that help to inspire dialogue.”

The first event is called Shorelines of the Cariboo Virtual Exhibit and is a competition open to all artists and naturalists, promoting the bio-diversity of lake-shores, river-shores, creekshores and wetlands.

People are invited to create art and/or photography that raise awareness about the importance of these water ecosystems, and send in a photograph of their work to the arts council’s Virtual Gallery. The entry deadline is April 30.

Also in keeping with the Reflecting Diversity theme, a Willow Basket Making Workshop will be held on Saturday, March 12, at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre’s open studio. The cost is $65 for the day or $50 for seniors/students or those who are unemployed.

Facilitator Christina Mary, from Horsefly, will lead participants through a daylong in-

struction to learn the skills and techniques of this ancient craft, building a basket by day’s end.

This ancient handcraft promotes cultural diversity and sustainability, using materials abundant in nature that are collected and made by hand.

Participants will build their dexterity, creativity and sense of achievement.

Stampede fundraiser boots up rodeo coffers Gaeil Farrar Staff Writer A great roast beef dinner, great games, great music and an enthusiastic group of guests, volunteers and community supporters all came together Saturday night to make for a memorable annual Stampede dinner, auction and dance.

Held at the Elk’s Hall tickets for the event were sold out well in advance.

While figures on funds raised won’t be available for a few days yet, Stampede president Tim Rolph is very pleased with the evening.

“From all indications it was an extremely successful evening,” Rolph says. “Tickets to the event sold out in record time this year.

Retirement Concepts came on board as the presenting sponsor for the event, and they were fantastic to work with.

“Participation in the auction was awesome, especially the frenzy of the Loonie toss, always fun, thanks to Wilf Smith for keeping the action moving.

The auction included 12 live auction items, 68 silent auction items, seven prizes for the loonie toss, three big prizes for the toonie raffle, and dozens of door prizes from the Stampede memorabilia table.

One couple who didn’t want to be identified pulled a Stampede poster out of the door prize box at random and it happened to be the 1985 poster, which ironically was the poster for the year they were married, received completely at random on the eve of Valentine’s Day. Rivalling the loonie toss this year was the Joker Poker game where a deck of cards was shuffled taped face down at random on the playing table so that no one knew which were the winning cards.

The Studio Theatre is holding two play pitching evenings to begin the process of selecting plays for its 2016/17 season.

The events will be held at the Studio Theatre starting at 7 p.m. each evening on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20.

People interested in pitching a play should bring along two copies of the script, the name of their stage manager and producer and a completed budget for staging the event.

People can pick the night that suits them to make their pitch.

The Studio Theatre is always looking for new members.

Celebrate Life dinner Darby Ramsay, a young mother from Salmon Arm will be the guest speaker at the annual Celebrate Life fundraising dinner “You’ll Never Regret Loving This Much,” that will take place at Sacred Heart Parish Hall on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

The evening will include musical entertainment, a silent auction and door prizes.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors and free for children ages five and under.

Tracy says he plans to frame the jersey, and hang it in his basement for “the grandchildren I don’t have yet” to enjoy.

The grand prize was a return flight for two to Vancouver with Central Mountain Air. Those whose names were on the two black Aces won Stampede swag bags filled with Stampede merchandise.

All in all it was a fun night with people rounding up the evening

dancing to the music of the lakecity’s popular band Clancy Wright and the Silverado Band.

“All the comments I have heard to date have been positive, thanks to everyone who helped out making the event possible,” says Rolph, who expresses his appreciation for the exceptional group of directors and volunteers he gets to work with as Stampede president.

Organizers were selling the soup for donations after the bowls ran out early.

Empty Bowls sells out The Cariboo Potters Guild and art auction contributors raised $4,264 for the Salvation Army food bank with their Empty Bowls fundraiser Friday.

The final tally included funds raised by the silent art auction held in conjunction with the event, says potter Jude Prevost.

“We’re pretty

thrilled with the turn out,” says Prevost.

People were lined up outside the legion at 11 a.m. for the luncheon that ran from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

For $15 people were given a hand-crafted bowl made by one of the potters filled with soup and bread made by local restaurants and caterers.

The potters made a total of 231 bowls for the event, and even had to take bowls off their seconds table to fill the demand.

Within the first hour of the doors opening, all of the bowls were sold but people continued to support the event buying soup for donations of $5 to $20 which they ate from bowls they wouldn’t

be taking home.

Prevost says the eight restaurants and caterers who contributed soup and bread for the event were just fantastic.

Potters are already talking about having to start making bowls earlier in the year in advance of the next Empty Bowls event which the potters host every second year.

Province and Tsilhqot’in nation sign accord Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The B.C. government and the Tsilhqot’in Nation have signed a fiveyear framework agreement.

Named the Nenqay Deni Accord, or the People’s Accord, the agreement outlines eight pillars of reconciliation to be negotiated in a holistic manner.

“It establishes a shared vision, principles and structures to negotiate a comprehensive and lasting reconciliation between the Nation and the Province,” the two parties said of the agreement in a joint statement issued last Friday.

Pillars outlined in the accord are Tsilhqot’in culture and language, children and families,

healthy communities, justice, education and training, lands and resources and economic development.

Tl’etinqox-t’in (Anaham) Chief and TNG Tribal Chair Joe Alphonse is excited about the accord and said it’s the next step in the Tsilhqot’in’s Supreme Court rights and title win.

“This agreement ensures we’re able to have the resources so we can bring in professionals to help us create a governance structure that can deal with these issues,” Alphonse said.

Alphonse said he envisions the nation will be able to look after the young and the old, balancing modern ways and traditional customs.

“We also want to make sure if resource

extraction is happening there has to be benefits to our people,” Alphonse said. “The sooner we get such a deal, the better for everybody.

It is uncertainty that creates division between First Nations and nonFirst Nations, he added.

“Everyone wants to know what the rules of the game are and it’s a chance to get rid of that uncertainty.”

Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation John Rustad said Friday for more than 150 years there were various levels of friction and conflict between the Tsilhqot’in and the province, culminating in the Supreme Court rights and title decision in June of 2014.

“Since then we’ve engaged with the

Tsilhqot’in to find a new way,” Rustad said, noting after the two sides signed a letter of agreement in September 2014, the government and the Tsilhqot’in have been working together on the accord.

It’s the first of its kind and historic, Rustad said of the agreement.

“We have agreed with the Tsilhqot’in that we will engage with the federal government together to bring them to the table to be partners with us in reaching this longterm reconciliation.”

Historically the federal government has had the most responsibility for First Nations, said Alphonse.

“The Harper government did not want to deal with us. With Justin Trudeau and the Liberals we are hopeful they

will deal with us, but to date they haven’t responded to any of our letters,” he said. “The longer they delay the more it’s going to cost them.”

Xeni Gwet’in (Nemiah Valley) Chief and TNG vice-chair Roger William said he is also excited about working with his own community and non-First Nations in the region during the next five years.

“We want to let the public know the signage we have put is all part of the process,” William said, adding they want to work together to protect the backcountry.

“The transition needs to be expedited and we need to work with local operators in the area.”

Only Crown land within the Tsilhqot’in territory will be part of

TNG log signage vandalized in Nemiah Valley Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Recent damage to brand new signage in Nemiah Valley is disheartening, said Xeni Gwet’in Chief Roger William.

Last week he learned a welcoming monument and signs on declared title land were damaged recently.

“I got pictures from one of our local op-

erators of the damage and some from the RCMP and on Feb. 9 we went and looked at it,” William said.

“With the monument we are assessing the damage to make sure it is safe.”

At about the same time a metal title sign was damaged at the junction that comes off the Tatlyoko/ Chilko Road.

“It was ripped off too,” William said.

“One at Siwash was run over too.”

The gateway monument was erected approximately 25 kilometers west of Tsilhqox Biny (Chilko Lake).

“It could be anywhere from someone giving us a message that they are not happy, but it also shows what we as Xeni and as a nation are going through and dealing with,” William said,

noting it’s more evidence there is some resistance to the rights and title decision.

More than five years have been spent planning and raising funds for the Gateway Signage Project.

The Gateway acts as a welcoming marker for all entering the declared Aboriginal title area.

Beside the road, visitors can find signs

outlining maps, information about the area and reference to further information.

“There will be many changes as the Tsilhqot’in Nation transitions the Aboriginal title lands to our full ownership, management and control,” William said. “We need to work with everyone in the area to understand and respect these changes.”

Mt. Timothy Ski Area will be open to the public Wednesday, however, with ungroomed runs only as they are waiting for parts for their grooming machine which also forced the ski hill to close Sunday. The hill received 10 centimetres of fresh snow Monday evening and staff say there is some great riding to be done.

Timberwolves earn provincial berth Defeat Prince George in two-game sweep to win Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Williams Lake Female Midget Timberwolves are on their way to the provincial championships.

The team punched its ticket during the weekend after a twogame sweep of Prince George on home ice at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex in the Cariboo Amateur Hockey Association playoffs.

The T-wolves clawed to a 7-3 victory Friday evening before sealing the deal Saturday in a 5-3 effort.

After the victory head coach Roy Call said the team now has its sights set on not just attending the provincials, but potentially bringing home a provincial championship.

“We have a chance to compete there,” Call said.

“And we have a chance to win there.”

Williams Lake will have to get past Kamloops, however, who is the No. 1 ranked team in the province.

“They beat us twice, we tied them, then we beat them.”

The team will also be looking to continue with its momentum following a victory at the Surrey SuperHeart Tournament where they knocked off the Orangeville Tigers of Ontario in the final two weekends ago.

“Skill-wise we’re right there,”

Call said. “Our biggest thing is to continue to work real hard these next six weeks.”

The BC Hockey Midget Female Championships take place in Kamloops from March 27-30 — a time, also, when the IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championships will be held in the Tournament Capital.

“It’s going to be a real exciting week,” Call said.

“We’ll take in some of those

games — it’s going to be really awesome.”

During Friday’s contest Katya Levermann pounded Prince George’s goaltender with four goals, while Grace Outhouse, Faith Outhouse and Adriane Kennedy notched singles.

Saturday, Levermann lit the lamp another two times while her sister, Anya Levermann, also achieved the same feat.

Caitlyn Ray tallied once in the 5-3 win.

The Timberwolves have been on a roll as of late and will look to stay sharp during their downtime before provincials, Call said.

“We’ll take two weekends off here and then come back for a tournament March 4-5 in Prince George and we hope to schedule some games later against some teams from the Coast,” he said.

“We’ve been on a real rip since Christmas. The girls have really improved their skills and I feel like we’re one of the better teams in the province.”

The city’s Recreation Services Department is hosting a Tween Carnival Night In the Pool on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m.

There will be unique games being played in the pool such as ring toss in an old-fashioned carnival atmosphere.

Blue Fins return from AA swimming provincials Four Williams Lake Blue Fins swimmers came away from the Swim BC AA Championships in Penticton with solid performances.

Kara Zavitz, Kelsey Blokland, Liam McCreight and Keanna Saunders qualified. “[They] did a great job,” said Blue Fins head coach Chad Webb. “Liam and Kelsey had many solid swims as they bettered their performances in most of their swims and came away with many best times.”

Zavitz, however, was the star of the show as she brought home two silver medals from the competition. She placed second in the 50-metre backstroke and second in the 100-metre backstroke facing provincial competition. McCreight finished seventh in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Williams Lake’s Conlan Sprickerhoff and fellow members of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack cross country team were running indoors during the weekend at the Ryswyk Invitational Indoor Track Meet.

The event, held Feb. 13-14 at the Tourna-

ment Capital Centre in Kamloops, featured university athletes from across the province.

Sprickerhoff raced to a second-place finish in the men’s 1,500 metre in the 20-34 age class with a time of 4:22.56 on Saturday, then followed it up with a first-place result Sunday in the 800-metre race in a time of 2:04.88.

“He ran a five-second personal best in the 1,500 (metre),” said TRU cross country running team coach Carmin Mazzotta.

“Even more impressive was the 800 (metre) on Sunday.

“We have not done any speed work to prepare for anything faster than the 1,500 but Conlan jumped into a shorter distance

race and ran brilliantly.

He led through the first 400, was passed on the third 200, but never dropped. With 200 to go he got on the lead runner’s shoulder and blew by him, closing his last 200 in 31 seconds for the win.”

Mazzotta said it was Sprickerhoff’s first competitive 800-metre race and added he ran it like someone who’s

The Cariboo District of the Ministry of Transportation is creating its lists of registered Equipment for Hire for the fiscal year 2016/2017, which begins April 1, 2016.

All individuals or companies registered this past year through the District Office in Williams Lake will be receiving invitations to re-register their equipment for the coming fiscal year by mail.

Any individuals or companies not registered in 2015, but wishing to have their equipment listed, are hereby invited to contact the District Office to obtain the appropriate registration forms.

Note that while you do not need to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability insurance, or up-to-date WorkSafeBC coverage to register, you will have to meet these requirements prior to working on any ministry projects.

Only owned or lease-to-own equipment is eligible for registration. Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year. Seniority is not transferable from area to area.

The deadline for new registrations is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2016. Late registrations will be accepted, but will be put at the bottom of the open list. Note that there is no charge for registering new equipment, or for changing or removing equipment information already listed.

Stampeders look to close out East Division final Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Williams Lake Stampeders took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five Central Interior Hockey League East Division final

Sunday after a 5-3 home-ice victory over the Quesnel Kangaroos.

One day prior, the Kangaroos snatched up a 4-3 overtime victory to even the series up at one a piece, be-

fore Williams Lake rebounded the following day.

“I think our guys played really aggressively and I think we played the whole 60 minutes really well,” said Stampeders

president Marko Zurak. “The boys played well, all four lines, and we rotated them and got the right results.”

On Saturday Francis Johnson, Stuart Sasges and

Kurtis Bond tallied for Williams Lake, before Quesnel’s Justin Fulton notched his second of the night just five seconds into the extra frame.

Sunday, the Stampeders led

4-2 after two periods with two goals from Kaleb Boyle, and singles from Nathan Zurak and Kurtis Bond before Matt Lees added an empty net marker in the third in the 5-3 win.

Justin Foote made 35 saves Sunday in the victory for the Stampeders.

In the CIHL West Division fi-

nal the Terrace River Kings took a 1-0 series lead over the Smithers Steelheads after a 6-5 overtime win.

Game four of the East Division final is slated for this Saturday in Quesnel and, if necessary, game five takes place in Williams Lake on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Dorothy Evelyn 1934-2016

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dorothy Evelyn (Watts) Smethurst on February 9, 2016 after a valiant struggle with cancer. She was 81 years old.

Dorothy had been a resident of Williams Lake, since 1958 and had been active in the community. Her husband, Robert S. Smethurst, had predeceased her on January 3, 2010 at 78 years old after working for the school board for over 30 years.

Dorothy is survived and missed by her brother, Charles Watts and his family, her sister Suzanne Cameron and her family, her two sons Robert E. Smethurst and Stanley Smethurst, their wives, 7 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.
