Views B.C. Views: Protesters fear peace in forests

by Tom Fletcher After 20 years of representing B.C. coastal First Nations to negotiate what U.S.-directed activists labeled the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a weary Dallas Smith expressed his relief and frustration.

At a ceremony to sign the final agreement in Vancouver last week, Smith, president of the Nanwakolas Council of remote Central Coast communities like Bella Bella, joked that he’s finally out of a job. Then he got serious.

“My communities still aren’t better places to live yet,” he said. But the land use agreement with the province and forest companies over a vast coastal area up to the Alaska border means the years ahead will be better.

He said when he started it was like being caught in a divorce between the B.C. forest industry and international environmental groups.

Dutch-based Greenpeace, its California offshoot ForestEthics and others moved on from their Clayoquot Sound

battle to the B.C. coast, looking to continue the blockades against logging.

“It’s the First Nations of the Coast who stood up and said ‘no, this is how it’s going to work’,” Smith said.

How it’s going to work is that logging will continue on 550,000 hectares of coastal forest, with a greater share for First Nations, and with 85 per cent of the region preserved after a century of logging that began with sailing ships.

Aside from a few diehards who are either paid to protest or can’t get past issuing demands, B.C. aboriginal people have grown tired of being used as props in global de-marketing

campaigns directed from San Francisco or Amsterdam. The protesters’ tactic of organizing customer boycotts that damage far-away economies might be good for international fundraising, but it’s bad for poor people.

Formally begun 10 years ago with $30 million from Ottawa, $30 million from B.C. and $60 million from a group of wealthy U.S. family foundations with a larger anti-development agenda, the land use plan remains under attack.

Among the many protest outfits is Pacific Wild, which has specialized in Great Bear Rainforest campaigns and now needs a new

enemy. Their credibility was demonstrated recently when pottymouthed U.S. pop star Miley Cyrus decided to speak out against B.C.’s wolf kill.

Typical of celebrities, Cyrus had no idea about the struggle to preserve dwindling herds of mountain caribou. She barely knows where B.C. is, a fact made plain when Pacific Wild toured her around the North Coast, far from the Kootenay and South Peace regions where the wolves in question actually roam.

Cyrus’s handlers spoon-fed video and statements to urban media, who were so anxious to exploit her global popularity that they

played down the fact she was at the wrong end of the province spouting nonsense.

After periodically attacking their own B.C. agreement as inadequate, Greenpeace and ForestEthics have moved on to what they call the “boreal forest,” which we like to call northern Canada. The same bully tactics with forest products customers and producers have been featured.

This time, a Quebec company that signed an accord in 2010 is suing Greenpeace for “defamation, malicious falsehood and intentional interference in economic relations.”

Aboriginal companies on the B.C. coast will

continue to log, including areas of old-growth forest and secondary growth. They will continue to export logs as economics dictate. They will continue to harvest animals, including grizzly bears.

And, I expect, they will continue to be subjected to attempts to supervise and direct them by members of urban society’s new religion, environmentalism.

The leaders of this movement don’t like peace. It’s bad for their business.

The public has been invited to provide insights about how the Government of B.C. can best tackle climate change moving forward.

Premier Christy Clark is encouraging environmental activists, families and students to tell the government its priorities and what they would like to see in B.C.’s new Climate Leadership Plan. A consultation website was launched on Monday, January 25th. The public consultation will be running for 60 days in total.

“The input British Columbians have provided to date has been very helpful as we develop B.C.’s new Climate Leadership Plan,” said Clark in a recent press release. “Now is the time to engage even further in the conversation, as we seek to build on our global leadership through our next set of climate actions.”

There was an initial web-based public engagement session focused on the environment last summer.

Having the time to continue the discussion with the government has been welcomed by some residents in the East Kootenay region and criticized by others.

“This is a great opportunity to have the views of East Kootenay residents heard and integrated into this provincial process. It’s a chance to make sure the Climate Leadership Plan is designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities in rural areas of BC, including the East Kootenay,” said Megan Lohmann, head of community energy management at the Community Energy Association. “Our older housing stock presents

a lot of opportunity for improved energy efficiency.”

She believes the plan could benefit individual communities as well as the region, helping with the large-scale effort to make improvements.

The growing popularity of electric car charging stations has taken off, but now Lohmann feels the East Kootenay region should be looking into developing a green network with strategic locations to address the challenges of living in a rural area, where travel is mandatory.

Clark has also announced she will chair a new cabinet working group on climate leadership that will oversee government’s climate actions and policies, while considering current and future provincial climate action goals. The new members include: Environment Minister Mary Polak, vice-chair; Finance Minister Mike de Jong; Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training Minister Shirley Bond; Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett; Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone; Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Peter Fassbender; and Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman.

The working group will remain active after the release of B.C.’s Climate Leadership Plan later this spring to ensure the plan remains relevant and effective in helping the Province achieve its greenhousegas reduction goals.

However, MLA for the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding, Norm Macdonald, met the announcement for a public engagement process

with praise and skepticism.

“Action on climate change is an issue that is raised consistently by people here in Columbia River-Revelstoke,” Macdonald told The Echo. “Over the last decade, it has been the public that has provided the strongest leadership, demanding more effective action by government.”

He feels that specific issues that relate to this area include an effective management of interface wildfire protection for communities, protection of waterways, and food security.

“Based on this government’s record on climate change, the public has a healthy skepticism that this is, in fact, a genuine process, and I have to say that I share that

skepticism,” concluded Macdonald. “Nevertheless, it is important that people take every opportunity to speak out on this issue, and that would include participation in this process.”

Indigenous speaker series continues with Sophie Pierre College of the Rockies’ Indigenous Speaker Series continues on Thursday, February 25 with a presentation by Sophie Pierre entitled Reconciliation in Ktunaxa Territory.

Pierre, who led the St. Mary’s Band for 26 years as Chief, has always been a strong advocate of economic development to achieve self-determination for Aboriginal peoples. Her

determination helped make the St. Eugene Mission Resort a reality. Her business savvy has made her one of the most recognized Aboriginal leaders in the country and she is a

frequent speaker at business and economic development conferences.

Pierre was recognized as CONDO’s 2002 Individual Economic Developer of the Year and in 2003 was honoured with

the National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the business category for her leadership with the St. Eugene Resort development. Pierre is also a recipient of the Order of British Columbia and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee commemorative medal.

College of the Rockies; Aboriginal Education Coordinator Andrew Judge says, “It is an honour to have Sophie Pierre participating in our Indigenous Speaker Series. With her long history in the area, she will have a unique perspective on reconciliation from a lo-

Overall: Dodge’s flexible and clever Journey tall wagon gets simplified and better equipped for 2016.

While Dodge no longer has a mid-size sedan, the Journey is filling that hole very nicely. The Journey scores a hole-in-one as a practical, efficient and affordable carrier. It has just-right sizing going for it, which means it’s bigger than the Mitsubishi Outlander

but more compact than a Chevrolet Traverse or Ford Explorer. The latter offer standard or optional third-row seating, but all are considerably more expensive than the $22,700-baseprice Journey. In entry-level trim, it provides seating for five people, although there’s an available twoplace third-row 50:50 split bench.

There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flip-forward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables.

Environmental Assessment Certificate Application Review of the Proposed Baldy Ridge Extension Project Open House and Invitation to Comment Teck Coal Limited (Teck) is proposing to extend the working life of Elkview Operations with the Baldy Ridge Extension Project (proposed Project).

The proposed Project would be located approximately 2.5 km east of Sparwood, British Columbia, and would produce an estimated 7 million tonnes of clean coal per year and sustain Elkview Operations’ existing workforce.

Teck must obtain an Environmental Assessment Certificate (Certificate) before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. Teck has submitted the application for a Certificate (Application) to the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). EAO has determined that the Application contains the required information and accepted it for detailed review. The review of the Application will occur over a 180-day period, starting February 15, 2016.

Invitation to Comment EAO seeks public comments on the Application. The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects— environmental, economic, social, heritage and health—that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process.

The 35-day comment period will begin on Monday, February 29, 2016 and end on Monday, April 4, 2016. EAO will consider all comments related to the Application received during this period.

Treating Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia (FM) is the second most common musculoskeletal condition after osteoarthritis and it can be effectively treated using low dose lithium orotate and by supporting the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. This frustrating condition is what is called a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that all other possible causes of the widespread pain, fatigue and cognitive difficulties must be ruled out before the diagnosis can be made. If the physical and emotional struggle of FM weren’t enough, it is made more tormenting by the fact that there is no test or 100% clear marker that diagnoses the condition. Recently, a test called FM/a has been touted to diagnose the condition however experts are critical and that it has yet to prove its mettle. FM is often misdiagnosed and certainly misunderstood. In fact, some practitioners don’t even recognize it as being real at all.

For those who suffer with the dull, pulling ache, incapacitating fatigue, sleep disruption, mental fog and brain “zaps”, poor concentration, depression and headaches it is all too real.

There are two very effective treatment approaches that I use together to help people with fibromyalgia. The first is the widely misunderstood mineral called lithium. Unlike high dose lithium carbonate that is used to treat bipolar disorder, low dose lithium orotate is perfectly safe and what I recommend to those with FM (and anyone who wants to keep

their brain healthy as they age).

Lithium orotate in doses as low as 1 mg and up to 20 mg daily can dramatically reduce the pain and sleep disruption so common in people with FM. It appears that lithium orotate works by reducing inflammation in the central nervous system. As it happens, lithium orotate also reduces the risk of dementia, slows the progression of alzheimer’s, treats cluster headaches and actually protects and grows brain cells - all exciting side benefits. Part two in treating FM requires balancing serotonin levels. People with FM have a collapse in this neurotransmitter so crucial for health. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates communication between nerve cells and regulates well-being and happiness. Serotonin is made by the body from an amino acid called tryptophan and those with FM have a relative deficiency of this crucial amino acid. By providing enough of the building block for serotonin the body is able to self regulate this crucial neurotransmitter and the symptoms of FM ease. While low dose lithium orotate is pretty straight forward, balancing serotonin is made more complicated by the fact that one must also support dopamine (another neurotransmitter) or risk creating imbalances within this system. The combination of lithium orotate and serotonin support make an effective team in safely treating the frustrating and debilitating symptoms of fibromyalgia.

If you don’t have enough growing space and supplemental light inside, plants will get overgrown and vulnerable to breaking. Begonias are easy to grow and need low light to thrive. They are slow to start, but will continue to bloom for the entire year.

Most commonly, they come in bulbs this time of year at your local garden centre. The bulbs aren’t much to look at, but they produce some of the most gorgeous hanging baskets and shade flowers. If you want to grow plants for hanging baskets, choose a pendula variety as these flow over the rim of the baskets. For planters and flower gardens, choose non-stop varieties as they have amazingly large upright blossoms.

Simply place a bulb in a few inches of Nurseryland Potting Mix, Keep moist, warm, and up it will grow.

With the first waterings, use with liquid Kelp as this will help produce angel hair-like fibrous roots. These roots allow the plant to be able to absorb more food and grow larger.

“Without enough committed volunteers, there will be no fire service,” stresses Boreen. “Once volunteers submit their application packages, they can begin training right away and we will have them do both an online training component as well as handson training.”

Design and plant your own edible garden

On Wednesday February 24th discovering a holistic approach to gardening will be made possible when Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Food Action Committee present the Food Forest Workshop “Design and plant your own edible garden”.

The workshop will take place from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at McKim Middle School in Kimberley for $35.

The workshop aims to open the concept of an “ecosystem” approach to gardening by taking participants through an introduction, all the way through to establishing a successful food forest. Those attending will enjoy an in-depth explanation regarding the anatomy of forests along with the mechanics of achieving these benefits in your own food forest through mimicking the structure and function of natural forest systems. Whether creating a project at home, on the farm, or in a public community space, the workshop will provide the framework necessary for success.

Adrian Buckley and Luke Kimmel of reGenerate Design, a Calgary based design company focused on permaculture and food forestry, will be leading the workshop. Adrian and Luke compliment one another by drawing on Adrian’s keen sense of design and ‘outside the box’ creativity paired with Luke’s ‘boots on the ground wisdom’.

Reinhart named in top WHL player of all time list Local fan favourite Sam Reinhart has officially been named in the prestigious Top 50 WHL Players of AllTime list.

As part of the Western Hockey League’s 50th Season celebrations, a panel of historians selected the top 125 players in WHL history this past September. From this list, WHL fans voted at Top50.whl.ca to select the Top 50 WHL Players of All-Time.

This week, the fan and panel voting results revealed the following placements: #43 – Sam Reinhart (Kootenay ICE) #45 – Pavel Brendl (Calgary Hitmen) #44 – Brent Sutter (Lethbridge Broncos) #42 – John Davidson (Calgary Centennials) #41 – Marian Hossa (Portland Winter Hawks) Sam Reinhart, the youngest of the three Reinhart brothers, was a member of the Kootenay ICE for four full seasons from 2011-15.

As a 15-year-old affiliate player, he scored two goals in four regular season games before appearing in seven postseason matches en route to winning the 2011 WHL Championship with his brother, Max. In 2011-12, Reinhart received the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Rookie of the Year after recording 62 points (28g-34a) in 67 games.

During his NHL Draft year in 2013-14, Reinhart earned the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as WHL Player of the Year as well as the CHL and WHL Sportsman of the Year award. His 105 points (36g-69a) in 60 games were fifth in League scoring and Reinhart was named to the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team.

Reinhart was also chosen to the WHL Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team in 201213 and 2014-15.

At the end of his WHL career, Reinhart had registered 319 points (120g-199a) in 250 regular season games. Reinhart holds the Kootenay ICE franchise record for the most assists and points in a career. In addition, he recorded 35 points (13g-22a) in 36 playoff contests. The Buffalo

Royal Alexandra Hall set to host Ensemble Caprice show Ensemble Caprice is coming to the Royal Alexandra Hall on February 23.

Ensemble Caprice, a baroque ensemble which performs on period instruments, was founded by acclaimed recorder soloist Matthias Maute and has become known for its innovative and adventuresome approach to an increasingly expanding musical repertoire.

For 25 years Ensemble Caprice has been known for the innovative spirit it breathes into the baroque rep-

ertoire. In addition to their concerts in Montreal, the orchestra undertakes several tours every year – an impressive accomplishment, with dozens of concerts given in Quebec, Canada, USA, Europe, and Asia. They have named their latest project Salsa Baroque.

Salsa is the Spanish word for sauce, designating at the same time a dance as well as a family of musical genres in Latin-American music.

It is this latter meaning and its ancient roots that, together with a bit

of humour, that Ensemble Caprice have taken to give the title Salsa baroque to their project. Despite the human and political tragedies surrounding the colonization of the South American continent, the multi-polar musical culture that resulted is distinguished by its fiery spirit and passion: here is music with a unique character that enriches the repertoire of the 17th century with refreshing novelties.

River drainage, an area exhibiting both East Kootenay and West Kootenay influences.

There isn’t really much of a creek at Salesbury Creek, but there is forest diversity, some logging and an old trail. Armed with our ‘track’ guidebooks, a little background knowledge and a willingness to learn, we tromped up the hill.

Once you begin tracking, you soon discover there is a whole new world out there with many riddles and scenarios waiting to be revealed. If you allow yourself to be right and rely on your hunches and intuition, the puzzles can eventually be solved. Observe the little threads of evidence and blend these with the larger picture. Chances are you will be right more often than not.

Soon we came across the trail of something big and heavy. Looking right and left, we saw that, whatever it was, had been clipping off some willow tips. In fact, it looked like there was a ‘big one’ and a ‘smaller one’. Greg ventured off to the side and luckily found a small pile of poop which he shared with us. Now we were fairly confi-

dent that this puzzle could be solved. A cow and calf moose were up there somewhere.

The next curiosity was a very faint, skinny streak, actually several little direct lines. Something very small had tried to climb the slope.

We could see tiny hopping prints which were partially obscured by a dusting of fresh snow.

Evidently, one or more Dusky Shrews had made repeated passes in an attempt to find something to eat. Now we could check off 2 animals, one of which weighed about 100,000 times more than the other.

Identifying tracks to the species level is much easier if you first look for certain clues.

Those clues are not usually found in the track.

Only 1 in 100 tracks show clear detail like toe or nail marks. By far, the 2 most useful clues to look for are the track ‘pattern’ and the overall trail width that the pattern makes.

Many animals have 4 legs and an ability to change their speed.

Therefore, it is somewhat complicated to ID their track patterns.

In an effort to conserve energy, there are distinct

patterns that the various species use most of the time, so it is useful to group the animals by their ‘regular’ walking pattern. There are 4 basic patterns: Pace, Diagonal, Bound and Gallop.

Of course, animals and birds also make ‘signs’ as they go about their business. We encountered a group of live trees where, perhaps 50 years ago, a black bear had stripped away the bark near the base of some spruce and balsams. In an effort to obtain nourishment in late winter when new, leafy greenery has not yet emerged, bears will seek the cambium and inner bark of trees. The tree crowns will be responding to the warm

April sunshine at the same time that their feet are still in the cold, snowy ground. The sap is starting to flow and bears will capitalize. One more recently stripped tree had been weakened enough so that bark beetles had gained the upper hand.

Something, perhaps a Three-toed Woodpecker, had made numerous pits in the bark of the now dead tree. If the activity was recent, we might have seen bark flakes on the snow. Piles of broken fir and spruce cones accumulate where squirrels perched on a prominent root or branch, and repeatedly sought the nourishing seeds within the cones.

It was not surprising to see Pine Marten tracks

in the snow near these middens, the squirrels` main predator.

Next time we search for tracks, we’ll use some newfound skills.

When the sun is low and casting long shadows, track depressions will darken, while scuff marks will lighten up.

Even if we can’t easily determine the number of toes or the shape of the heel pad, we’ll reach down and feel the tracks with our fingers.

If a track is snowed-in we’ll simply dig down to the original track and feel for it. It will be firm from the compression of the snow and may actually be like a chunk of ice.

Regional District of East Kootenay AREA A FLOOD CONTROL SERVICE Notice of Alternative Approval Process

The Board of Directors of the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is considering adoption of Area A Septage Disposal Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2665 which will set up a septage disposal service in Electoral Area A. Pursuant to the provisions of the Local Government Act and Community Charter, the RDEK Board may adopt the Bylaw and proceed with the service as noted above if, after the deadline, less than 10% of the electors in Electoral Area A have signed and submitted Elector Response Forms. If after the deadline of 9:00 a.m. on March 29, 2016, at least 138 electors (10% of 1,379) in Electoral Area A have signed and submitted Elector Response Forms, the RDEK Board cannot adopt the Bylaw and cannot proceed with the service unless it receives assent of the electors by voting.

PROPOSED SERVICE The RDEK operates septage ponds near Hosmer to receive waste from septic and sewage holding tanks from residential, commercial and industrial sources in the Elk Valley. The septage ponds are operated and maintained by the RDEK under the Elk Valley Subregion Waste Management Service, even though Electoral Area A is responsible for all costs and receives all revenues related to the ponds.

The RDEK is proposing to create a new Area A Septage Disposal Service to separate the septage ponds from the Elk Valley Subregion Waste Management Service to provide greater clarity that Area A is responsible for the cost of operating and maintaining the facility and receives the benefit of the revenue.

Since the proposed service is for a facility that already exists under another existing service, there is no additional tax impact to properties. While a maximum tax rate of 1¢/$1,000 of assessed value is proposed for the new Area A Septage Disposal Service, we don’t anticipate needing to tax for the Service because the revenue generated by the septage ponds exceeds the cost to operate it.

Not many birds were seen that afternoon, but we got one of the biggest, most striking forest birds on the continent. Nearly the size of a crow, black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming red crest, it drummed on the tip of a tall, dead Western Larch. The distinctive, heavy, thunk of the Pileated Woodpecker could be heard at a great distance.

Pileateds live in mature deciduous or mixed deciduous-coniferous woodlands of nearly every type, from tall Western Hemlock stands of the West coast, to Beech and Maple forests in New England and Cypress swamps of the Southeast. Besides younger forests with a good supply of downed wood, suburban areas with large trees and patches of woodland provide good habitat.

Large, rectangular excavations which pursue the tunnels of carpenter ants indicate the presence of the Pileated.

These excavations can be so broad and deep, that, in the wind, small trees will break and fall.

In addition to carpenter ants, these birds seek woodboring beetle larvae, termites, spruce budworm, caterpillars and grasshoppers. They also eat wild fruits and nuts, and occasionally will visit backyard bird feeders for seeds or suet.

A Pileated pair stays together on it’s territory all year round. De-

fensive in all seasons, they will tolerate new arrivals during the winter. It’s rare to see more than 2 birds together at a time, as Pileateds are monogamous and hold large territories. With a lifespan of 10 or more years, if a member of a pair dies, the other often gains a new mate. New individuals then get a chance to breed and hold a territory.

The female Pileated lays 1 clutch per breeding season. With 4 eggs being most common, 1-6 are possible.

The eggs are white and slightly glossy and are incubated by both adults. Following 15-18 days of incubation, both adults alternately feed the young in the nest cavity for 24-28 days.

After 3-5 months, the young leave the adults but do not venture far from the natal territory.

The Pileated Woodpecker is an extremely important part of the forest ecosystem, as it’s excavations provide shelter for many other species including Swifts, Owls, Bats and Pine Martens.

Although it is a relatively common and abundant species, Woody is under threat from collisions with road traffic and increased predation from habitat loss. The location of it’s roosts and nests in tall trees puts it at risk from lightening strikes. Also, it’s attempts to create roosts in creosote-treated utility poles can cause the death of eggs and nest-

lings.

According to the North American Breeding Bird Survey, populations have steadily increased over the last 50 years. It is important for property owners and forest managers to maintain large, standing dead trees and fallen logs. These elements provide insect food and the cavities which are needed by many species of birds and mammals. Historically, Pileateds probably declined greatly with the clearing of the Eastern forests, but rebounded in the mid-20th century as these forests grew back.

More research is needed into the Pileated’s biology and the effects of human disturbances on it’s population.

BYLAW NO. 2665 – “Regional District of East Kootenay – Area A Septage Disposal Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2665, 2015”– This Bylaw will establish a septage disposal service within Electoral Area A for the operation and maintenance of the Hosmer Septage Ponds. The Bylaw includes a maximum tax rate of 1¢ per $1,000 of taxable assessed value of land and improvements.

ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS An elector is a person who meets the following qualifications as set out in the Local Government Act: RESIDENT ELECTORS: • age 18 or older; and • a Canadian citizen; and • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately preceding signing the Elector Response Form; and • a resident of Electoral Area A for at least 30 days immediately preceding signing the Elector Response Form; and • not disqualified by any enactment from being a registered elector or otherwise disqualified by law.

Before social media became so prevalent, instances of bullying were somewhat easy to recognize. However, with a good majority of children now engaged in digital networking and social media, bullying may not end with the ringing of the school bell, and evidence of bullying may not be so readily apparent.

According to Cyberbullying statistics from the iSAFE foundation, more than half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyberbullying. More than 80 percent of teens use a mobile phone regularly, making it the most popular form of technology and a common medium for repeated cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying takes place through electronic technology and differs from traditional forms of bullying.

Cyberbullying can occur via text messaging, blogging, updates to social media sites and/or phone conversations.

What makes cyberbullying more difficult to detect and remedy than traditional bullying is that sometimes this type of bullying is veiled in secrecy.

Those who engage in cyberbullying can create aliases and accounts under false names, allowing them to covertly engage in bullying behavior. As a result, tracking down bullies can be challenging.

Although cyberbullying is on the rise, there are some

things that parents and children can do to help put a stop to such unfortunate instances. * Parents who feel their child is not emotionally ready for the responsibility of a digital device can hold back on purchasing a smartphone or choose one with very limited features. Some schools set strict limits on phone usage at school, and children who go only from school to home and vice versa may not have the need for an “emergency phone” that can open up a window for trouble. * Adolescents and teens should feel comfortable talking with their parents without the fear of reprimand. Otherwise, they may hide instances of cyberbullying or not know how to broach sensitive topics like bullying. Parents can engage in conversation with their children often and stress that the doors of communication are always open. * Teens should be made aware that cyberbullying is a very real occurrence and is not just other kids “having fun” or “joking.” If behavior is repetitive and hurtful, it should be made public and addressed. * Parents can monitor and limit their children’s personal accounts. Some smartphone and tablet applications can be mirrored on the main account, enabling parents to see incoming text or video messages. * A laptop or desktop com-

puter should be placed in a shared space so that usage can be monitored. Parents can restrict tablet or smartphone usage to public areas. * When online, children should be advised not to share personal information.

Social media sites may be used by bullies to gather sensitive information about a person that can be used against them at a later time.

Children should be urged to keep passwords secret and to never give information such as birthdays, phone numbers and addresses to people who aren’t close friends. Friend

lists should be restricted to only those people students interact with frequently to minimize the chance for bullying or other inappropriate behavior. * Teens who have been bullied can keep evidence of the bullying and may benefit from talking with a counselor.

Cyberbullying is a growing concern for educators and parents and has far-reaching implications. Getting smart about this phenomenon can help staunch new cases of online bullying.

Adults should remain diligent in monitoring what kids are doing online. Bullying can take place through digital devices, such as mobile phones.

Learn the early warning signs of bullying…

Children grow and develop their personalities in various ways. While many youngsters are teased or receive some good-natured ribbing at some point in their school careers, some teasing can eventually turn into bullying.

The National Education Association estimates that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Furthermore, more than 70 percent of students report incidents of bullying at their schools.

Although children in lower grades have reported being in more fights than those in higher grades, there is a higher rate of violent crimes in middle and high schools than in elementary schools.

According to the association Make Beats Not Beat Downs, harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school shooting incidents.

Bullying can take many forms, and learning the warning signs as a parent can help prevent harassment and potentially dangerous situations.

Verbal: If your child reports being called names, being the recipient of racist, sexist or homophobic jokes, or being spoken to in an offensive or suggestive way, this can be a form of verbal bullying.

Cyber: Social media, email and text messaging has become a way for bullies to spread malicious messages or photos. In the era of digital media, this type of bully-

ing has increased considerably.

Physical: Some bullies engage in physical attacks, including hitting, kicking, spitting, or other forms of physical confrontation. Destroying personal property also is considered physical bullying.

Indirect: Gossiping and spreading nasty rumours about a person is another form of bullying. This type of bullying may go handin-hand with cyber bullying.

Signs your child is being bullied Parents can recognize certain signs that their child is being bullied at school.

Bullied children frequently make excuses to avoid going to school. While the desire to stay home is something many children may express, those who are bullied may do so much more frequently. Bullied children tend to avoid certain places and may

be sad, angry, withdrawn, or depressed. They may have trouble sleeping or experience changes in appetite, and bullied youngsters’ academic performance may suffer.

Also, parents may notice that children return from school missing some of their belongings.

Signs your child is the bully Parents may not want to imagine their children bullying other students, but bullies do exist. Children who bully other kids have strong needs for power and negative dominance. They may find satisfaction in causing suffering to others.

Some signs that your child may be a bully include: • easily becoming violent with others • having friends who bully others • blaming others quickly • comes home with belongings that do not belong

to him or her • getting in trouble with teachers or school administrators • picking on siblings • not accepting responsibility for actions There are ways parents can teach their children to act properly when faced with a bully. First, parents should explain that bullying is not the child’s fault and he or she does not deserve to be picked on. Next, parents can let children know that being assertive but not violent with bullies may diffuse the situation, as some bullies thrive on the fear of their victims. If the bullying behaviour continues, the student should speak to an adult or authority figure.

Parents of bullies may need to be especially mindful of their children’s behaviour. Counselling could be necessary to determine what is compelling kids to bully other students.

CAROL VIOLA WILSON 1940-2016 With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of Carol following a year long battle with cancer. Her positive attitude throughout the whole ordeal provided strength to all who knew her. Carol was born on Dec. 21, 1940 in Vancouver and lost her courageous battle in Cranbrook on Feb. 8, 2016.

Carol was a strong, caring person who was known for her amazing knowledge of a variety of topics, earning her the nickname of “Brittanica”. She had a love for animals, especially horses and dogs and for several years was involved with raising and showing dogs with the Cranbrook Kennel Club. It seems her love for animals grew out of the years she spent as a “farmer’’ in the 70’s in rural Cranbrook. Carol was also hooked on golf. She loved the game and competed all over the province along with her many golf buddies. She became involved with the BC Golf Association and was a highly qualified course rater for many years, a passion she reluctantly gave up in 2014. Carol was a member of the Cranbrook Golf Club for over 40 years, spending many of those years as the Ladies Club rules and handicap person. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cranbrook for over 25 years, and contributed substantially as a volunteer, taking on the role of bookkeeper for the past several years.

Carol is survived by her loving partner of 17 years, Bill Brock; her son Steve (lnge) of Hope; her son Michael of Cranbrook; grandson Dylan Welsh and his mother Debbie Welsh of Vernon; her brother Lyle (Sharon) Norlander of Vancouver and his children Jacquie, Susan, Paul, Mike and John; her stepchildren Michael (Paula) of Campbell River, Patrick (Dawn) of Cranbrook, Lesa of Red Deer, Chris (Jeanne) of Cranbrook and stepgrandchildren Trent, James, Brandon, Aidan, Ashton and Hailey; her first husband Don Wilson of Cranbrook and niece Leslie. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernie and Viola, her infant daughter Marina Denise and her second husband Ron Gartside.

There will be no memorial service at Carol’s request but a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Donations in memory of Carol can be made to the B.C. Cancer Agency or to the East Kootenay Hospital Foundation.

OBITUARY Elizabeth Bernadeen Sims “Bernie” 1924 – 2016 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Elizabeth Sims announces her passing on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in Cranbrook, BC at 91 years of age.

Bernie was born on November 14, 1924 in Killam, Alberta.

She and her husband Arne resided in Montrose, BC until the early 1980’s when they moved to Cranbrook.

Bernie is survived by her sons Jim (Wendy) Sims and Ron Sims, brothers Hugh (Shirley) Doherty and David (June) Doherty, sister Theresa (Harvey) Mcauley, son-in-law Jim Sims, 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews and caring neighbours and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Arne Sims, daughter Shirley Sims and daughter-in-law Cherrie Sims.

There will be no service at Elizabeth’s request.
