Gladish is the sixth potential candidate to back Liberal Leader Sandy Silver, the party’s only elected member of the legislative assembly.

The Yukon Party and the NDP have yet to put forward any new contenders for this year’s election, which must take place by October at the latest.

Smith’s departure comes at a time when all political parties are ramping up for the next territorial election.

Pasloski must call an election by this fall. Both opposition parties have already begun to announce potential candidates.

Smith estimates the new facility will be staffed by between 12 to 15 full-time employees.

Other jobs include physiotherapists and social workers who will also be around to provide support.

There’s no word on what the building will be used for once the Whistle Bend facility opens. For now the department is only saying “the property can be used for other health and social services housing needs.”

Designs for the Whistle Bend facility were made public last month. The current cost of the project is estimated at $147 million. That includes construction, infrastructure and move-in costs.

Construction is expected to start in April and to be complete

by January 2018. Residents would move in sometime in the spring of 2018.

Last December, the construction contract was awarded to PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc., the same company that is working on the Whitehorse General Hospital expansion.

Yukon government to take over Dawson City’s water treatment plant Ashley Joannou News Reporter

T

he City of Dawson won’t be running its much-criticized and often malfunctioning water treatment plant.

Despite plans for the town to eventually take over the facility, the territorial government announced Tuesday afternoon that it will be the one that owns and operates the plant.

Dawson will now pay the Yukon government a service fee. “(The city has) expressed significant concerns about taking this on,” said Community Services Minister Currie Dixon.

“It’s a very large, very challenging and complex piece of infrastructure and ultimately we decided that because we have better resources and better capacity to deal with it we determined that Yukon government was better positioned to own and operate the plant than the town of Dawson.”

The facility began operations in the fall of 2012, and the plan

The territory’s explosive disposal unit was called in but determined the package was

As of February 2015, the plant finally had three straight months of testing that passed the requirements for its water licence.

That triggered the beginning of a two-year warranty period.

Corix will run the plant until 2017.

Dawson Mayor Wayne Potoroka said a memorandum of understanding between the town and the territory laid out the conditions that had to exist before Dawson was in a position to take over the facility. Two of those conditions were that the project be affordable and work properly.

The facility still isn’t working as it should be, Dixon admits.

Right now it is meeting the requirements most of the time but having challenges particularly in the summer months, he said.

On top of that it’s costing more

than expected.

“It is working but it’s not working as consistently as was planned and it’s not operating at the costs that we had planned,” Dixon said.

“What we’re doing now is trying to get the operations of the plant fine-tuned, get it working better, more consistently and bring the operating costs down.”

When the plant was being designed, costs were estimated at $380,000 a year, said Jennifer Macgillivray, the Department of Community Services’s director of infrastructure. She cautions that the early number did not consider the cost of having an Outside company run things. It also doesn’t include the correct number of staff, she said.

Still, the costs are much higher. Right now the plant costs $94,000 a month to run. That’s more than $1 million annually.

Macgillivray said the government is covering costs for Corix like staff living allowances, flights and other things that wouldn’t be part of the bill if the place was

run locally.

“In the future, what we’re looking at doing is our operations branch will run the project,” she said.

“They’re looking at whether they’re going to hire a contractor or hire in-house. That’s going to be far cheaper than hiring a contractor.”

The department is hiring a cost consultant to break down how the money is being spent.

Meanwhile experts at the plant are still trying to figure out what keeps going wrong.

Throughout the winter months the plant has been meeting its requirements, Macgillivray said.

“The summertime operations are more challenging because the sewage strength coming into the plant is much higher.”

Still, it should be working, she said.

The flow metre that measures the volume has been replaced.

A handful of valves that were the incorrect type for the plant are being replaced. All of those

changes are covered under the warranty.

If things aren’t running properly by the time the warranty runs out in February 2017 the government has various options, Macgillivray said.

“If they haven’t met the terms of their contract, and the plant can’t produce an effluent that meets the requirements of the regulator, then YG will address this with Corix through the terms of the contract.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean court, she said. The contract requires the two sides start with mediation.

Potoroka said his office hadn’t finished crunching the numbers when it comes to how much the town could afford to pay to run the place, but he feels relieved by the territory’s decision.

“I’m feeling appreciative of the Yukon government for helping us out. If they would have walked away this community would be in some hard times, but they didn’t.”

“We don’t immediately shut down the streets. We have to

see what we have and make a determination if there is a threat to public safety and so on,” Thompson said.

“There was an investigation that kicks in from the minute we hear of this trying to explain this package, why it’s there.”

By 11:45 a.m. police couldn’t explain the package away and

decided to consult with the explosives unit.

Police, fire and Whitehorse bylaw and public works officials blocked off several city blocks around the CIBC building while officers using a robot checked out the scene. At about 2:30 p.m. it was determined that there was no threat.

Thompson won’t give any

details about the package or what was in it.

“We’ve determined it’s non-criminal. There was no criminal act involved with this, whoever left that there.”

He said the incident is an example of multiple organizations working well together.

“We feel that we do have a strong relationship with (the Kaska),” he said. “For us as a company, we’re pleased to see that agreement put in place.”

The delay is the latest in a string of bad news for Yukon’s mining industry. Last month, Capstone Mining announced that its Minto mine will likely go into temporary closure in 2017, which would leave the territory with no operating hard-rock mines.

Last November, the governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories acquired the Cantung mine and Mactung property on the Yukon/ N.W.T. border. The decision was made after Cantung’s previous owner, North American Tungsten, failed to find a suitable buyer for the sites.

And Yukon Zinc’s Wolverine mine remains in care and maintenance over a year after it shuttered, citing low commodity prices.

But Samson Hartland, executive director of the Yukon Chamber of Mines, insists the outlook isn’t entirely bleak.

“We’re confident of many of the projects that exist in Yukon,” he said, listing Kaminak’s Coffee project and Victoria Gold’s Eagle Gold project as examples. “There’s a lot that we feel positive about.”

He said there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make sure the Yukon is ready to bring new projects on-line when mineral prices rebound.

For instance, he said, Yukon government and mining representatives were recently in Ottawa to discuss a northern resource gateway project that would upgrade the Goldfield, Casino, Freegold and Nahanni Range roads to improve mining access in the Dawson and Nahanni Range areas.

The Yukon government has recently submitted a funding application to the federal government for the project, which would cost about $300 million.

Though the discussions in Ottawa didn’t produce any firm commitments, Hartland said it’s clear the Yukon government, First Nation development corporations and mining companies were all “speaking with one voice.”

And Hartland said he’s confident about the future of the Selwyn project.

“There’s no question that at some point it’s going to proceed,” he said. “It’s not a question of ‘if,’ it’s just a question of ‘when.’”

Takhini Hot Springs pitches new plans Myles Dolphin News Reporter

T

he Takhini Hot Springs site, one of the territory’s most popular tourist attractions, will turn into a bigger facility with multiple pools and a Nordic spa surrounded by a four-kilometre walking trail.

That’s if all goes according to plan for Garry Umbrich, president of Takhini Hot Springs Ltd., who presented the project to about 20 people at an open house on Monday evening.

Umbrich and his wife Carla Pitzel, who own four of the 10 lots on the site, want to transform the hot springs from their current incarnation as a concrete recreational pool to a more natural-looking setting.

The resort plans have been in the works for over 15 years, Umbrich explained, but gathered more steam after major renovations were made to the existing pools and buildings in 2008.

That included replacing the fencing, building a new roof and renovating the change rooms.

The goal is to build something that is more similar to what’s found at the Liard Hot Springs in northern British Columbia, he said Monday evening.

“We want to get back to nature with the look of the springs,” Umbrich said.

The new design will see the construction of three or four smaller pools with temperatures between 40 and 42 degrees. In comparison, the current pools are between 35 and 39 degrees.

One pool, reserved for families, will be slightly cooler and have chlorinated water.

Most of that parcel of land, about one hectare in size, will be enclosed in a fence that won’t be visible from any of the pools.

The pools will be connected to each other by covered walkways.

The new pipelines carrying the water from the spring to the pools will be insulated so there won’t be a drop in the temperature, Umbrich said.

There won’t be an interruption in service, either, when the current building and pools shut down and the new ones open.

“If one closes Sunday night the other opens Monday morning,” he said, adding that construction should be completed by June 2018.

But the ultimate goal would be to one day build a five-diamond high-end destination spa, Umbrich said, one that would “put Yukon on the world map.”

“It’s a big ticket item, and we’re not holding our breath,” he added.

“But market studies have shown this would fly in the Yukon – provided it’s five-diamond.”

There are only seven five-diamond facilities in Canada, according to the American Automobile Association, the organization that developed the rating system.

There is already a lot of activity going on at the hot springs site these days.

Six of the 10 lots on the site have been sold to numbered companies, Umbrich explained on Monday.

Several of the owners were present at the meeting.

Together, they’ve created an owners’ association meant to “protect the integrity of the resort.”

Christian Berneche, for example, said on Monday he still wasn’t sure what he wanted to build on his lot. But it might include yurts or conference facilities.

Another lot, owned by Takhini Hot Springs Ltd., is a 30-hectare parcel of land where there are staff cabins and a cell tower. Eventually there might be an observatory there, Umbrich said.

pants and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit.

That business is set to open in May, Umbrich said.

The couple also leases and runs the hot pools from Takhini Hot Springs Ltd. under the separate name of Takhini Hot Pools.

Some residents of the area have accused Umbrich of failing to consult with them over his development plans.

In the past, Umbrich has accused residents of holding secret meetings and meddling in his affairs.

One point of contention has been whether Umbrich has the right to cluster a large number of residences on a single lot.

According to the Hot Springs Road local area plan, up to two residences are allowed on a single lot.

But the zoning also allows for the owners of adjoining lots to transfer this allowance, resulting in more than two residences on a single lot.

Tempers flared during a constituency meeting with MLA Brad Cathers in November as residents of his riding slammed doors and yelled at each other over ongoing development at the Takhini Hot Springs.

Monday’s open house was a much calmer affair.

Umbrich said development would take place in areas that are already cleared and disturbed.

“If we’re successful in implementing these projects you won’t see most of the developments,” he said.

“We want to keep the forest in as natural a state as possible.”

Disputed Dome Road placer claims will go to highest bidder Maura Forrest News Reporter

wenty-five placer mining claims in Dawson City will be awarded to whichever of their two owners places the highest bid.

Justice Ron Veale delivered his decision on the ownership dispute between Darrell Carey and Rod Adams in Yukon Supreme Court on Friday. The 25 claims are located east of the Dome Road in Dawson.

Carey and Adams may each file a sealed bid of at least $500,000 with the court by Feb. 29. The bids will be opened on March 3. “The court will grant an order of sale to the highest bidder,�

Veale explained during his decision.

The dispute between Adams

and Carey stems from a disagreement over how to operate the claims, which they purchased jointly in 2012 under the company name 47162 Yukon Inc. Adams and Carey mined some of the claims in 2013, but the disagreement has prevented them from doing any work since then.

Last week, Adams’ lawyer asked the court to put the 25 claims up for a sealed-bid auction, so that the company could then be dissolved.

But Carey’s representative said that would be unfair, because Adams is “a much wealthier man than (Carey) is� and would almost certainly outbid him.

In his decision, Veale pointed out that “there is no evidence for this allegation.�

He said that sealed bids are “a well-established principle in business law.�

Carey had proposed to split the claims with Adams, in an arrangement that would have left him with 16 claims adjacent to his existing Slinky mine on the west side of the Dome Road. Adams would have retained nine claims in two blocks further east of the road.

But Veale said it would be impossible to know whether that arrangement would leave the two men with equal value, because the claims haven’t all been tested to determine what they’re worth.

In this case, he said, sealed bids are the “fairest option.�

The bids must be at least $500,000, the value of the claims in 2013. The winning bid will be divided equally between Carey and Adams, the claims will go to the winning bidder, and then the company will be dissolved.

Both Adams and Carey have

indicated that they want to mine the claims this season, though it’s unclear whether that will be possible.

Adams’ lawyer had originally asked that the bids be filed by Feb. 15, to give the winning bidder enough time to get a water licence for this season.

Veale pushed that date back to Feb. 29.

Adams could not be reached for comment for this story.

For his part, Carey will still be able to operate the 10 claims that make up his Slinky mine. “I’m going to keep on mining,� he said outside the courtroom on Friday.

In 2014, the Yukon government agreed to reroute the Dome Road around Carey’s Slinky claims to give him easier access. In exchange, Carey agreed to finish mining the claims by Dec. 31,

2017 and to surrender part or all of them to the government. The government has plans for a new subdivision in that area.

Carey now hopes to have that end date pushed back to the end of 2018, because the completion of the Dome Road re-route took almost a year longer than planned.

Energy, Mines and Resources spokesperson Jesse Devost said that is something the government will consider. “We’re going to have a discussion with him about whether that end date needs to be moved, but no decisions have been made yet.�

Carey also owns at least six claims on the east side of the Dome Road that were not included in the 2014 agreement.

Yukon government strikes agreement with City of Whitehorse for Two Mile Hill lot Myles Dolphin News Reporter

he Yukon government has provided land at the top of Two Mile Hill to the City of Whitehorse for its future operations building.

Scott Kent, minister of energy, mines and resources, made the announcement on Friday morning in a news release.

The eight-hectare lot, originally held by the Department of Highways and Public Works for a possible future expansion of the Whitehorse airport, will be provided through a long-term lease at a fee of one dollar per year.

Whitehorse City Manager Christine Smith said the news finally allows the City to move forward with its multi-year project. “We’re really happy to finally have the decision,� she said this morning. “We just have to formalize the

agreement through a lease, finalize the working with the Yukon government and present it to city council for approval.�

Announced during the 2015 capital budget, the City plans to spend $56 million over the next two years to consolidate many of its existing buildings into two locations: a service building next to city hall and an operations building off Range Road on Two Mile Hill.

The City says the project, called the city’s Building Consolidation Project, should ultimately save money by shuttering old, energyinefficient buildings and bringing most of its workers together under two roofs, rather than having them scattered in many downtown locations.

The services building would house human resources, parks and community development, corporate services and development services.

The operations building would be the new home for fleet maintenance, waste and water services, utility systems, engineering, operations, transportation maintenance and traffic maintenance.

Just under one-third of this year’s capital budget, or $5 million, has been allocated to the project.

But delays late last year pushed the project’s timeline back.

In late 2014 city council and administration had hoped to have construction of the operations building begin in early 2016 and occupancy planned for late 2017, and the services building ready in early 2018.

During a meeting with the Yukon government in November last year, the City was told there was an issue with the territory’s Financial Administration Act. The act is written to protect public money from losses in risky investments. It states investments

must adhere to specific guidelines. They must be guaranteed

by Canada, a province or a bank, or receive the highest rating from at least two recognized securityrating institutions.

At the time, Smith said the Yukon government hadn’t explained what the specific issue with the act was.

Government spokesperson Dan Macdonald later explained the lease needed to go to cabinet first.

As a result of the delay, the operations building is now on track to be completed at some point in 2018, Smith said.

While the lease is being finalized, administration wants to put out a request-for-proposal for the design of the operations building, she added. That will give city council a better idea of costs, she explained.

Smith said. “In the meantime we have to do our best and focus on the building that we need the most right now, which is the operations building. The Municipal Services Building (on Fourth Avenue) is on its last legs.�

Smith said the current project is just the first phase of several to come in order to meet all of the City’s infrastructure needs. “If we want infrastructure in place for the next 20 or 40 years we need a lot more than $56 million,� she said. “You’re looking at more like $90 million. “That’s the ultimate dream goal to have all our operations organized and centralized.�

Rookie Alaskan wins Quest 300 Tom Patrick News Reporter

enana, Alaska’s Jessie Holmes entered the Yukon Quest 300 with a specific and lofty objective.

He entered it to win it. And he did just that.

“When I came here, I came with the goal to win the race,” said Holmes. “I didn’t talk about it with anyone other than my handlers, but I wanted to win the race because I thought my dogs had the potential. They’re young and for most of them it’s their first 300-mile race, but I came in with a strategy that would give me an opportunity to be towards the front: to keep short rests …

That’s how I trained and set the team up.”

The 33-year-old race rookie completed the 300-mile (483-kilometre) race from Fairbanks to Central, Alaska with a total time of two days and 10 minutes – the fastest total time in years.

He reached the finish in Central at 3:43 p.m. on Monday. 2014 champ Aliy Zirkle of Two Rivers, Alaska – the only woman to win the Yukon Quest 1,000 – placed second at 4:39 p.m.

Fairbanks race rookie Joanna Jagow crossed the first at 6:19 p.m. for third.

Holmes was first to reach the final checkpoint in Circle, about an hour and a half ahead of Zirkle.

next year.

“I plan to come back next week and train going over Eagle summit going the other way to prepare for next year,” said Holmes.

“I’m jazzed up and energized.

I’m not even tired from this; I feel energized.”

Ontario’s Joshua Skerritt –

another rookie – was the top Canadian in the 300, placing fifth at 10:52 p.m. on Monday.

Mendenhall’s Olaf Thurau was the top Yukoner, finishing early Tuesday for ninth.

Teams in the 33rd annual Yukon Quest 1,000-mile race will begin to reach Dawson City, the race’s halfway point, mid-day Wednesday.

At press time Wednesday morning, defending champ Brent Sass was at the front of the pack. The 36-year-old of Eureka, Alaska, left the Clinton Creek checkpoint with an hour and a half lead over second place’s Allen Moore, the 2013 and 2014 champ from Two Rivers.

Sass had a 24-kilometre lead over Moore at last check.

2012 champ Hugh Neff of Tok, Alaska was just behind Moore in third and Two Rivers’ Matt Hall in fourth.

10 Mile’s Ed Hopkins was the leading Yukoner in fifth place.

Hopkins, 51, placed third last year for his best finish to date.

As for the other Yukoners: Whitehorse’s Yuka Honda was in 10th; Mendenhall’s Luc Tweddell 15th; Whitehorse’s Rob Cooke in 17th; and Mendenhall’s Gaetan Pierrard in 18th.

With the scratch of American J. Jay Levy on Sunday, 22 teams remain in the 1,600-kilometre race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse.

H

ave you ever worked on a trial, from start to finish? I have. When I did so, I was always amazed about how much information – how much detail – I would miss by simply stepping out of the courtroom to go to the bathroom.

And that brings me to the Jian Ghomeshi sexual assault trial (or the trial of those accused in Tim Bosma’s murder, or any other trial that attracts a lot of media attention). With the exception of a few dozen other people, who are there every day, none of us – none of us – are there to observe the proceedings, to hear and see the evidence.

This is important, because – since these two trials kicked off – I have seen too many otherwise-sensible folks lose their minds on social media, and appoint themselves the role of judge, jury and executioner. For reasons I do not fully comprehend, they think they have superior insight into the accused, the witnesses, the evidence and the law – simply by peering periodically at a tiny screen, filled as it is with 140 characters.

They don’t. They can’t. Facebook – and Twitter in particular – facilitate a sort-of mob mentality online, one in which people with no understanding whatsoever of the issues/evidence/law decide whether someone is guilty/culpable or not. It’s like The Ox Bow Incident (a 1943 film in which three innocent men are hanged by a mob) except with smartphones. (That movie is why I went to law school).

Here’s a cautionary report from the U.K.: “Instant publication on the internet can go viral at an astonishing rate but so too can the message that the criminal and civil law applies to it as much as to a considered newspaper article . . . Facebook and Twitter are publications subject to the same laws that in practice used to apply only to the mainstream media. Anyone commenting about a case or defendant in a way that could prejudice a trial could be prosecuted for contempt and impris-

There, the British Attorney General has starting publishing advisories to the general public – advisories that previously only went to accredited media – about how to avoid being jailed for contempt for something someone posted online about a trial.

The same sort of conclusions are being reached in Canada, particularly after the notorious “Killer Colonel� case a few years back. After the trial, high-profile criminal defence lawyer, Michael Edelson, sounded a similar warning. “The public interest is not served by where they don’t properly understand court proceedings and they don’t understand why a certain verdict or certain sentence emanates from the court, because they haven’t been given enough information to make a decision for themselves,�

Edelson said. “And certainly, getting 140 characters doesn’t assist you in making a decision whether or not the judge got it right.�

Which brings us to this week, and to the shredding of the first complainant in the Ghomeshi trial. There can be no doubt that she handed the prosecution a devastating setback, one that clearly created lots of questions about the alleged offence as it related to her. She did that – not the

defendant’s (very capable) lawyer.

Those of you who are getting upset reading Twitter accounts of the trial of the former CBC luminary – and expressing your feelings online – need to please take a step back, and recall those hoary old concepts you’d like to apply to you, should you ever have the misfortune to get in big trouble – you know, innocent before proven guilty, vigorous defence, guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, etc.

(And please don’t lump me in with the misogynistic scum who are delighting in how the Ghomeshi trial has gone so far. Personally, I usually favour regarding sexual assault as a capital offence.)

Months ago, a lawyer who knew more about Jian Ghomeshi’s trial told me he was likely going to walk. “The charges were laid in an environment of total media and social media hysteria,� this lawyer said. “The evidence just isn’t there.�

This week, the evidence certainly didn’t seem to be there in R. v. Ghomeshi.

But then again, I haven’t been in that Toronto courtroom every single day. So I don’t know.

Unfortunately the motion came during what has been a highly emotional few weeks in pipeline politics, with old wounds being torn open by some tone-deaf comments being made in opposition to the project by some Quebec municipal leaders.

Those leaders led by Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre decided now was the time to pick at scabs by coming out against the project with an emphasis on self-interested economic factors. Whatever the merits of Energy East, it takes a tremendous amount of gall for leaders who receive such significant indirect benefit from the oil-and-gas industry via transfer payments and federal spending to invoke the lack of direct economic benefit as grounds for their opposition.

Denis Coderre’s insistence that the project brought little economic benefit to Quebec was not only myopic in how it defined “benefit” but, in these hard economic times, came across as profoundly ungrateful to Alberta’s role as an important net financier of the federation. I can certainly appreciate why this poorly timed and communicated statement brought renewed calls to “let the eastern bastards freeze in the dark.”

There is no doubt that Alberta is hurting, with more jobs being

lost on an annual basis than at any time since the oil crash of the early 1980s, and the desire to help the people who work in the province’s energy industry is entirely understandable. The hurt is no doubt exacerbated by the fact that each barrel of Alberta oil is worth substantially less than oil produced elsewhere because it is so expensive to get the product to market.

But the Energy East pipeline is at best a long-term fix to what ails the struggling province. Even if the project ultimately receives the green light to proceed it will be many years before shovels break ground. By that time the economic conditions facing the oil industry will be entirely different.

This isn’t to say that it isn’t in Alberta’s best interest to advocate for the pipeline, nor is it to say that were this pipeline already built it wouldn’t put the province on significantly better footing.

But the short-term problem of what to do about struggling oil-producing regions and the long-term question of whether the Energy East pipeline should proceed are very different. There has been an implicit coupling in the public discussion between the current economic turmoil the province finds itself embroiled in and the Energy East pipeline,

yet the notion that the latter is the solution to the former is pure fantasy.

The climate change dimension to Energy East has also factored into the discussion.

The question on many people’s minds is what effect a pipeline would have on greenhouse gas emissions and our commitments to reduce them? Will a pipeline increase the amount of fossil fuels we’re pulling out of the ground (and thus our emissions) or simply allow producers to finally get what their oil is worth, rather than losing a good chunk of the price to transportation costs? For people like me who are concerned about climate change, this is a critical question before the project gets a thumb up or down.

I’m inclined to believe it is the latter, but there isn’t a clear answer to that question, so the Liberal plan to actually look at what effect the project will have on emissions “upstream” seems eminently reasonable – albeit a departure from how such projects have been evaluated in the past.

Unfortunately, this is a debate that has lately been anything but reasonable.

Yukoner blurs boundaries between painting and sculpture

D

eanna Bailey can tell you there are much worse places in the world to get lost than in the French Riviera town of Eze. It was last fall when the Whitehorse artist stepped off a train in the medieval village and took a wrong turn that led her directly to the beach and the Mediterranean Sea. Although she wasn’t planning on staying very long initially, she became mesmerized with the sight of the waves washing up against the rocks on the shore.

“It reminded me of some places in the Yukon,” she said.

“There were some similarities with the rocks, too. I ended up spending a long time there, enjoying the view of the hillside and being amazed at how the communities there are intertwined with nature.”

It inspired her to create Eze Beach, an 11-by-14 inch artwork made entirely of modeling clay of different colours.

Standing five or ten feet away from it makes it impossible to tell it isn’t a painting.

But up close, your eyes begin to notice the shapes popping out from the canvas.

Bailey’s use of modeling clay to craft extravagantly detailed compositions blur the boundary between painting and sculpture, an art form she learned about three years ago.

In October and November last year, she took part in an artist residency program in southern France with four other international artists.

“It’s so easy to work there,” she said.

“I got twice as much work done there than I would at home.”

Bailey produced 11 artworks during her time in France but also visited a dozen French towns, countless art galleries, museums and studios.

She even met a 90-year-old artist, one of the last surviving potters from Pablo Picasso’s time.

Fifteen of her artworks, along with three ceramic doors, are on display in the Hilltop Bistro at Yukon College in an exhibit titled Opening doors: From Yukon to Cote d’Azur.

Her work often incorporates nature in some way, she said. “I want it to be present for people to see, as a reminder of what we have and what we need to do to protect it,” she said.

Before attending the artist residency Bailey did a bit of travelling around Europe. She was particularly drawn to old towns and walled cities, especially the doors that adorned the aging buildings.

“I was fascinated by how these doors were always surrounded by all this stone and concrete,” she said, “yet the doors were always decorated with nature.”

“It’s also symbolism for the doors opening in my art career.”

Born in Calgary, Alta., Bailey completed her art and biology studies at the University of Lethbridge and University of Alberta in 2007.

It was while creating scientific illustrations that Bailey began investigating how she could incorporate more sculpture into her paintings.

She was introduced to modeling clay and it was the exact medium she was looking for, she said.

In 2010 she moved to the Yukon and a few years later she would attend an outdoor event that proved to be the turning point in her career.

The Yukon Plein Air Festival in 2014 brought various artists together over five days in July to create art in different parts of Whitehorse.

Each artist had to complete a piece of art every day, according to the rules of the event.

“Using modeling clay is a good outdoor medium because it doesn’t get bothered by wind or rain,” Bailey said.

“I was actually blown away by all the things I could do with it. I ended up putting my pencils and paints away and I’ve been working

It takes Bailey between 15 and 30 hours to complete an 11-by-14 inch artwork, she said, whereas she’d spent upwards of 100 hours working on a scientific illustration.

She draws her inspiration from nature walks around the terri-

tory – some of her favourite spots include Kluane National Park and Tombstone Territorial Park – and works from the pictures she takes on those days.

Bailey’s exhibit at the Hilltop Bistro runs until May and all the artworks on display are for sale.

The Bistro is open for lunch Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. from October until May. It operates as a community gallery showcasing a different artist each fall and winter term.

The artist-in-residence program at TRIUMF in Vancouver is bridging the divide between the two disciplines, allowing artists to interpret science, while bringing those scientific ideas to the public in a more accessible fashion.

Blaine Campbell, an Edmonton resident who holds degrees in mathematics as well as a fine arts degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, is the newest creator to fill the post.

Campbell recently wrapped up his second visit to TRIUMF, which is located on the University of British Columbia’s campus but is not part of UBC, photographing the facility and its equipment.

His work comes as TRIUMF celebrates the 40th anniversary of the commissioning of the world’s largest cyclotron, a particle accelerator that drives cutting-edge science.

“Well, I’m intrigued by the idea, the division between the two (art and science), or the perceived division between the two that is almost ingrained into society now that you’re either in humanities or sciences or engineering and the two shall not meet so to speak,” he said.

“As somebody who has worked in both domains, I can see connection in terms of the thought process and the way that you have to kind of creatively abstract ideas to come up with things, whether it be in art or in sciences.”

One of Campbell’s mostrecent works includes a kaleidoscope-like stained-glass piece composed of images from the Hubble Space Telescope archive.

He also recently completed a second piece, a metal engraving made up of a modified equation meant to summarize all-known physics.

Campbell said the program, which doesn’t include a paid fellowship, has allowed him to meet with TRIUMF researchers, discuss their work, and get a close-up look at their areas of specialization.

He said he initially wanted to conduct a photographic study focusing on detectors – pieces of equipment that detect energetic subatomic particles – but he has since found other things that are visually interesting.

Jonathan Bagger, director of TRIUMF, said the program helps show the public that science isn’t practised just for scientists.

“Science is done for society, and for really everybody,” he said. “There are many ways of communicating science, of expressing the results of science,

Bagger, who previously served at Johns Hopkins University as chair of the department of physics and astronomy, said TRIUMF is well connected to the community and has a “very active

engagement” with Emily Carr University.

Lisa Lambert, head of strategic communications at TRIUMF, said in an email that the relationship with Emily Carr dates back to 2009, when the program was first established.

She said Ingrid Koenig, an associate professor at Emily Carr who has taught a course called

“Black Holes and Other Transformations of Energy,” will also continue as an artist in residence at TRIUMF until 2018.

Beside Koenig and Campbell two others, David Harris and Andres Wanner, have also served as artists in residence, said Lambert.

She said TRIUMF, which is owned and operated by 19-member universities from across Canada, is committed to sharing its work and the “excitement of science and discovery,” beyond the laboratory, with the public.

“We view the TRIUMF artistin-residence program as an extension of this, bringing the art and science together and exploring both in interesting ways that provide connection to the community and culture,” she said.

Campbell, meantime, said he plans to return to TRIUMF in March, and until then he’s got no shortage of ideas.

“There are always ideas that bubble around,” he said. “Project ideas, I usually have a list of 20 or 30 things that I would like to be doing if I had the money and the time to do them. That list always kind of changes and evolves and gets added to.”

When writing to my friend, must I consider the possible views of her caregivers and stay away from controversial subjects? Or may I treat my letter as a private conversation, even though I know strangers will be reading it?

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My wife and I have attended several baby showers for friends and relatives this past year.

There is one friend in the

group who seems particularly passive-aggressive about these affairs, often opining on overpopulation, American consumerism, Americans’ waste, etc. Personally, I’d like to put her out on her keister. But my wife and her friends just roll their eyes at each other when she begins her litany.

Is my only recourse to follow my wife’s lead and simply roll my eyes, or is it safe to engage her in a debate?

I can debate quite civilly, but I also know this woman to fly off the handle at the slightest provocation – that may be my motive for engaging her, truth be told. I am so tired of her self-righteous statements, and I know others are also wearying of them. Do I commit a faux pas by responding to her when she begins spewing her nasty opinions?

GENTLE READER: First, let us rule out further eye-rolling – rudeness does not justify further rudeness. And a debate about population growth will neither silence the opinionated nor endear you to the hostess.

But if you cannot return rudeness for rudeness, Miss Manners does not lay the same ban on exchanges of righteous indignation.

The next time your wife’s friend complains about overpopulation, put on your most horrified look and say, “Surely you are not talking about the birth we are all here to celebrate?” Then walk away, leaving any follow-up debate to others.

Smallwood rink wins again at mixed championship

hitehorse’s Bob Smallwood has run out of Yukon curling titles to

win.

The skip led his team to a fourth straight Yukon Mixed Curling Championship title over the weekend in Atlin, B.C. His latest title comes just weeks after winning at the Yukon Men’s Curling Championships and a couple months after winning the Yukon Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in December.

Smallwood and his wife Jody, who plays third, captured their fourth consecutive mixed title with new teammates, second Scott Odian and lead Shannon Hall.

“It feels pretty good to retain the title,” said Bob. “We have two new players on the team. Nicole Baldwin is not playing with us and neither is Wade Scoffin.

“Shannon Hall is Scott’s partner. Jody and I just wanted to curl with another couple, I guess you could say.”

The Smallwood team claimed the title with a 5-1 record. Dustin Mikkelsen’s rink placed second at 4-2, Ray Mikkelsen’s third at 2-4 and Herb Balsam’s fourth at 1-5.

Team Smallwood’s one loss came in the final draw on Sunday, losing 5-1 to Dustin’s rink. The Smallwood team had

“We mixed it up in the last game,” said Bob. “I ended up

playing lead and my wife was the skip – just for the last game.

The last game didn’t make much difference for us. We had already won.”

Bob won his second Yukon men’s title in a row with Odian and teammates Clint Abel, Jon Solberg and David Rach last month. With the title the team

will compete at the Tim Hortons Brier – the national men’s curling championship – at the start of next month in Ottawa.

“Hopefully we can get everybody in shape for it,” said Bob. “I think Jon is still nursing a sore back. He hasn’t had time to come out and throw rocks. He’s trying to take it easy and get his back in shape.”

Bob and Jody, who split their time between Whitehorse and Atlin, captured their fourth Yukon mixed doubles title in a row in December. They will compete at those nationals early April in Saskatoon.

The Smallwoods, and former teammates Baldwin and Scoffin, placed eighth out of 14 rinks at the 2016 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships this past November in Toronto. It’s the best finish on record for a team solely representing Yukon. (A team representing both N.W.T. and Yukon placed fifth in 2006.)

The 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships will take place next November in Yarmouth, N.S. “When we go to Nova Scotia in the fall we’ll be looking at trying to finish in the top half and make it into the playoff round,” said Bob. “It’s a new team, so we can’t say we’ll finish in the top four.

We just want to finish in the top half.”

“We had a big group and a couple extra teams this year, so that’s exciting,” said Synchro Yukon president Lindsay Roberts. “Usually we have one or two teams, but we had three this year, and two solos, so that’s the first in a while.”

The championship finished with solo performances by Teera Walsh and Taylor Jobin. A total of 17 Northern Novas swimmers competed and performed, up from 11 last year.

The Northern Novas plan to attend two Outside meets this season. They will send a team to the Lower Mainland Regionals in Richmond, B.C. in April, followed by the Island Regional Championships in May. The club will also host its annual Water Show the same month.

“We’re only halfway through our season, so they only started working on their routines in December,” said Roberts. “So by the time we get to the Water Show in the spring, they’ve had that many more months to work on it.”

A

lmost two decades ago Yukonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gerry Willomitzer travelled to Wyoming to be a handler at his first dog sled race.

Nineteen years later he returned as a musher.

Willomitzer, of Shallow Bay, placed seventh at the Eukanuba Stage Stop Sled Dog Race in Wyoming on Saturday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was exciting. I had been down there before, 19 years ago, as a handler for somebody else so I knew the basic race format,â&#x20AC;? said Willomitzer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seventh place is well within my expectations. I could be anywhere within fifth and 10th and fifth would have been exceptional. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m competing against an entirely different type of dog team down there. I went down there with dogs I bred for distance racing. The mushers down there have a different dog, they have more of a pointer cross thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more built for speed. So I think we did pretty good.â&#x20AC;?

The eight-stage eight-dog Eukanuba race is considered one of the biggest sled dog races in the Lower 48. It has a similar format as the Tour de France cycling race in that each day there is a stage at a different location.

It began in Jackson Hole on Jan. 29 and finished in Uinta County on Saturday, with most of the stages around 70 kilometres in length, give or take.

Willomitzer completed the combined 520-kilometre race with a cumulative time of 27 hours, 11

minutes and three seconds.

The Yukon Quest and Iditarod veteran began with his best finish, placing second out of the 13 teams on the first stage, finishing the 51.5 kilometres in 3:07:38. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how that happened,â&#x20AC;? said Willomitzer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was just running the way I usually run and the way I trained for. But it snowed about a foot over night and I think some of the competitors were really holding back. Those sprint dogs arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t built for really tough trails, deep snow and trail breaking. So that may have gone in our favour a little bit.â&#x20AC;?

Denmarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Alex Stegmann placed second.

The Eukanuba â&#x20AC;&#x201C; formerly the Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has seen a Yukon champ a number of times in its 21 years.

Yukonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hans Gatt won the race four times in five years between 1997 and 2001.

The Tier 3 hockey team won three tournaments during the season leading up to the B.C. championship and finished with an incredible 34-5-6 season record. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As head coach of the association I did work with the players on and off the ice on a weekly basis and I can tell you firsthand that this young group of men epitomizes what it means to be a team,â&#x20AC;? said Whitehorse Minor Hockey head coach Derek Klassen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They played the game with passion, discipline and integrity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These boys should be forever proud of what they achieved last season.â&#x20AC;?

With huge growth in the club and successes on the national stage last season, Biathlon Yukonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Laurie Jacobsen and Dennis Peters shared the honour of being the Coach of the Year recipients. Jacobsen and Peters have been coaches with Biathlon Yukon since the 2010 Arctic Winter Games at which they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a full team. Biathlon Yukon now has about 30 competitive biathletes in that age group.

They also coached two biathletes at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, including Nadia Moser who won Yukon its first-ever medal in biathlon at the Games, eventually leaving with a silver and two bronze. A week ago Moser reached the top-25 at the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Romania. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an honour,â&#x20AC;? said Peters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels good to be acknowledged for some of the things that have happened in Biathlon Yukon. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not us alone, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge effort from a lot of people â&#x20AC;Ś Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not the only coaches, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about 10 of us up there now working with 50 youth a 30 adults.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just recognizing us, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recognizing the whole team â&#x20AC;Ś the whole club,â&#x20AC;? added Jacobsen, who was also named Female Coach of the Year by Biathlon Canada at the end of last season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just want to thank the parents who allow their children to try out for a sport that uses guns,â&#x20AC;? she added.

After losing its showground two years ago, the Yukon Horse and Rider Association has faced numerous challenges in keeping its annual horse show going. But thanks to the efforts of people like Whitehorseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sherillynne Himmelsbach, who was named Administrator of the Year, the show reached its 36th year last summer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really proud that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to keep it going,â&#x20AC;? said Himmelsbach. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no secret that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been struggling since we lost our showgrounds, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to find a new showground for the future. But in the mean time, just securing a place to have it year by year is an accomplishment, I think.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very gratifying to be recognized that way.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a surprise to me,â&#x20AC;? said Johns. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an honour to be up there with all the other people who have been honoured in the sport Hall of Fame. I feel very humbled about it because I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been doing it as long as some of the other ones.â&#x20AC;?

Murphy started playing table tennis in the early 1970s and captured his 20th menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s singles

title at the Yukon Table Tennis Championships last April. He has coached Yukon table tennis players at 11 Arctic Winter Games going back to 1974 and will attend his 12th next month in Greenland. He has also coached at seven Canada Winter Games spanning 40 years, beginning with the 1975 Games and his most recent last year.

Johns has been coaching with the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle since about 2002, he said. He has coached at the last three Canada Winter Games and also at three North American Indigenous Games since 2006.
