Gustafson students back on top of the world Team of MBA students wins competition at World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Jacob Zinn News Staff
If two consecutive international awards are any indication, MBA students from the University of Victoria may be the next leaders of sustainable business worldwide. For the second year in a row, students from UVic’s Gustavson School of Business won the Corporate Knights’ Business for a Better World competition, a contest that challenges teams from universities around the world to develop case studies to address sustainability issues in business management and investment. The competition was held in Davos, Switzerland and coincided with the World Economic Forum. This year’s competition saw teams work to draw up a clean, sustainable portfolio for the Norway Government Pension Fund Global, which is largely dependent on coal. Valued at $940 billion US, it is the largest sovereign fund in the world. “We created a framework considering the five different metrics, including the sustainability and the financial metrics,” said Mukesh Dhatwalia, an MBA candidate with the Gustavson school. “A lot of schools focused on just the numbers – they thought that enabling them to earn more profit would win the competition, but on our side, the numbers weren’t our only focus. We made sure that sustainability was the frontrunner, rather than supporting the framework.” The team was made up of Dhatwalia, Xuan Pan, Bhupinder Dulku and Laurent Sévigny. Dhatwalia and Pan served as financial analysts while Dulku was the team’s economist and Sévigny was their business consultant. The framework was divided into three steps – divest, invest and influence – to create a more sustainable portfolio. Dhatwalia said in some cases, it wouldn’t be possible to divest funds from larger companies, so the portfolio had to work to influence such changes. “In those scenarios where you know if you divest money it will hurt your portfolio, you can try to influence,” he said, “and the influence part, I think, made us really look good.” The competition had three rounds, where teams submitted 10 pages of slides, a 20-page business plan and a 10-minute presentation with a Q&A. Last year’s team was also there, so they knew what kind of questions we could expect.” The Gustavson team edged out teams from North Carolina’s Duke University and Toronto’s Schulich School of Business for the top spot. “The fact that we were able to put our mark on this two years in a row and highlight that this is what we stand for and that we can compete with the best in the world, to do that is a wonderful reflection of our

program,” said Dr. Saul Klein, Dean and Lansdowne Professor of International Business at the Gustavson School of Business. “It resonated particularly because the focus of the competition, Business for a Better World, is really what the Gustavson school is all about.” Dhatwalia credited the university, the industry panel and the team’s coach, Dr. Matthew Murphy, for their success in Switzerland. “They really helped us in terms of preparing for the questions and making sure our framework was robust enough that they could actually use it,” said Dhatwalia. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to the World Economic Forum and present over there, and to have our school’s name on two consecutive wins. Making the school proud makes us proud.”

Spectrum students gearing up for dry grad Jacob Zinn News Staff
They may still be a few months from graduating, but a group of Spectrum students are already preparing for their school’s dry grad in June. Grade 12 students Justin Bao, Finley Chamberlain, Giuliana Crozier, Sapphire Dorward and Ryan Novatil are currently raising funds for Spectrum’s dry grad, which will see approximately 320 students celebrate their graduation at the Pearkes Recreation Centre. The five high school seniors want to ensure that they and
their classmates have a safe, drug- and alcohol-free evening. “The month of June has the highest alcohol-related incidents, so we want to make sure that everyone in the grad class will be safe,” said Dorward. “We’re putting a lot of money and time and effort towards ensuring that we’re going to have a very safe night that will be enjoyable.” The group has been planning the celebration since September, with the help of more than 20 parents and many of their teachers. Since it is hosted by parents and volunteers rather than the
school, the dry grad does not receive funding from Spectrum. “In terms of budget, it’s a $15,000 to $20,000 event,” said Novatil. “A lot of that comes out of volunteering and the rest comes from applying for grants.” In preparation for the June 20 event, the students met with Mayor Richard Atwell to discuss their grant-in-aid application for funding from the district and the importance of holding a safe celebration for Spectrum’s students. “We asked for the maximum we could get from him,” said Novatil, noting they’re asking

the district to contribute $5 per graduating student, which works out to about $1,600. “He helped us out with how we should present ourselves and he said it would be a good idea to work towards coming up with a presentation for the budget meeting in March,” added Dorward. Vice-principal Donna Thompson said the students have been working hard with the Spectrum Dry Grad Parent committee to secure funding and donations from various businesses, in addition to their application to the district. “They presented themselves really well when we went to see the mayor,” said Thompson. “I was really proud to watch them up there with their mayor in their meeting.” Following their graduation ceremony at the University of Victoria, students will be escorted on buses to Pearkes, with no stops on the way to ensure the event will
be substance-free. The dry grad will run from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. and, for many students, it will be the last time they see their classmates for quite awhile. “It’s very important because it’s the last event in high school, and with grads moving off in different directions, it’s our last time together,” said Bao. “We want it to be fun and safe for everybody, to have a good time and not have the night ruined by anything bad or dangerous.” The committee is still looking for more Grade 11s to volunteer for the event. They are also looking for more community support, including monetary and prize donations from local businesses. Anyone interested in contributing to the dry grad can contact committee co-chair Sue-Anne Carter at sueannecarter@shaw.ca or call the school at 250-479-8271. jacob.zinn@saanichnews.com

Mayor calls for more consultation Forum focuses on region’s wastewater treatment solutions Travis Paterson News Staff
More than 140 people filled the hall the Vic West Community Centre on Monday night for an unsanctioned forum and presentation on the region’s wastewater treatment solutions. The evening was organized by alternative sewage lobbyists RITE Plan. Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell attended and was the only member of the Capital Regional District’s Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee to speak as one of five guest panelists. “We have to move along [in the face of the federal and provincial grant deadlines],” said Atwell, who’s made clear his desires for a more cost-effective solution. “I don’t think we should ignore what’s at the table, I think the federal and provincial governments need to see all the proposals coming in, and see that we’re not solely focused on the deadlines.” Atwell spoke in particular of the need for tertiary treatment to stem the flow of microplastics and microfibres, in addition to the federally mandated treatment of wastewater solids. He showed film footage of the ecosystem around the outfalls such as Clover Point and of microbeads ingested by plankton, which goes all the way up the food chain. Atwell attacked the current CRD survey, saying “How can the public make an informed decision based on outfalls on a map with dollar values and nothing attached to it. “We need another stage of public consultation, a more in-depth update and a chance for the public to talk.” One of the key organizers for RITE Plan is Bryan Gilbert, a Victoria resident who lives on the border of Saanich along Cedar Hill Road. The fact that people stood at the back of the hall and in the hallway on Monday night shocked Gilbert. “There was no budget, and we didn’t do a great job of publicity and yet we had an astounding turnout,” Gilbert said. “It’s nice to see people care, they’re looking for a way to express their frustration with what they get from the CRD.” The evening was hosted by CFAX’s Ian

Jessop. Presenting with Atwell and Gilbert were Brian Grover, a retired civil engineer, John Farquharson, who’s worked with Victoria neighbourhood action plans, and retired civil engineer Oscar Regier, who has 40 years of experience in municipal infrastructure such as potable water, stormwater and wastewater conveyance and treatment. “First of all, it’s not ‘the RITE Plan’ it’s ‘a RITE Plan’, because it just means we want a positive solution to this,” Gilbert said. “RITE Plan is about finding a responsible, cost-effective solution under $500 million. We believe a big amount of money can be saved, and we’re proposing many concepts.” The Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee met Wednesday, at which time Atwell believed a discussion could take place between board members regarding construction mogul John Knappett’s recent deep-shaft tertiary plant for Clover Point and other points.

Drug can help stem the tide of overdose deaths Indications that the province of British Columbia will allow firefighters to carry naloxone, also known as Narcan, is welcome news. The drug is known as the “antidote” to opiate overdose, and can reverse the otherwise deadly effects of ingesting too much heroin and/or fentanyl. Despite often being first on the scene of overdoses, firefighters, police officers and others who don’t have a required prescription for naloxone have thus far been banned from carrying the drug. Addressing that is a move that is long overdue, given the stakes involved and the safe nature of naloxone. It is available over the counter in more than a dozen U.S. states, and hospitals have been using the drug for more than four decades. Earlier this summer, Health Canada promised that it would review the drug’s prescription-only status, although a full process was expected to take more than a year. Whatever the outcome of that review, the fact that it’s only being done now – after too many deaths from accidental overdoses – shows that our society, and our government institutions, still have much they can do to help those on the fringes who have frequently been overlooked. While the drugs drive some into a life of homelessness and property crime, they are also used by husbands and mothers, sons and daughters, employees and bosses who conduct lives not stereotypically associated with hard drug use. In cases of overdose, all of those people – those on the fringes, and those in the mainstream – deserve the best shot at life, and the best opportunity at eventually overcoming their addictions. The quicker the province moves on this initiative, for all emergency responders, the better. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-3862624. There’s no single solution to deal with homelessness I can vouch for some of Tom’s Fletcher’s observations in his column of Feb. 3 (‘Urban drug ghettos aren’t working’). About a decade ago, for my own education, I interviewed 10 homeless people. Not statistically significant, but revealing nonetheless. Eight of them were recent arrivals who were already homeless before they got here. Two came on the recommendation of friends. One of the 10 was even featured in a Times-Colonist profile. He was fortunate to be offered a job as a result, but I’m sure one of our local homeless might have appreciated the offer first. Over the years numerous articles have featured unwitting quotes from homeless people who came here from elsewhere because they heard Victoria was a good place to be homeless. Many years ago another TC profile was about a girl from the western communities who took to living on the streets for the fun of it. Victoria’s own professional homeless guy arrived here from Red Deer, Alta. for the explicit purpose of simply living on the street. Since that time he has been ‘re-invented’ by the media and certain advocates as a homeless activist, but it’s a sham.

B.C. can do better It has been reported that B.C. has the best economic numbers of all provinces. Really? Who has paid for it? Premier Clark has cut and tweaked wherever it was possible, mostly on the poor: B.C. has the highest child poverty in the land; the highest debt for students; family and children services understaffed; not enough judges and sheriffs. Homelessness is a real problem, the care for mentally challenged citizens is woefully inadequate, and the minimum wage for adult workers plunges people, who often have to work several jobs, more and more into poverty. This is not a success story for B.C. or Premier Clark. Karin Hertel Saanich

Options behind the times I agree with Rob Wickson. We have to look toward the future. I attended the open house for the new McKenzie interchange and saw the options. They looked just like those of the past century. They could easily have been drawn up in the 1970s, including several traffic lights. Lots of stop and go, lots of idling, just the same as before the turn of the century. Things are changing, they always do. These options are the same old, same old. R. Townsend Saanich

The Saanich Fire Department reports the upstairs tenant in a duplex noticed a smokey haze in his unit on the morning of Feb. 5. “After banging on the windows and door to the unit below, an occupant awoke in the downstairs suite and discovered his brother in the adjacent bedroom asleep with the mattress on fire,” said Saanich Fire Capt. Rich Pala in a statement. “The occupant then grabbed a blanket and after pouring water onto it, threw the blanket over his brother and the mattress before pulling his brother from the bedroom.” The upstairs tenant then used a fire extinguisher on the blaze until firefighters arrived
and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire department reports there was no structural damage to the home and about $2,500 damage to the contents. All occupants were safely evacuated from the home with one man sustaining minor smoke inhalation. “Saanich Fire investigators have determined the cause of this fire to be from a cigarette which fell between the bed and the wall closet in the early hours of the morning,” said Pala. “Investigators credit the quick action of both the upstairs tenant and the brother in the downstairs unit with saving the occupant’s life.” Investigators determined that the smoke alarm in the downstairs unit was not working at the time of the fire due to a dead battery. The Saanich Fire Department
installed working smoke alarms in both the lower and upper suites prior to leaving the scene. “Close calls like this reminds us of the critical need to have working smoke alarms in all homes and that those alarms be located where they can be heard by occupants who are sleeping,” said Pala. Statistics show the majority of deaths from fire are in situations where alarms are either not present or not working because batteries were dead, disconnected or missing. Residents are reminded to replace batteries and test alarms twice a year. The Saanich Fire Department’s Fire Prevention members are available to assist Saanich residents who may have difficulty checking, installing or maintaining their smoke alarms.

“We have received valuable input from the community and continue to talk to stakeholders and the public as we take the next steps in bringing this important infrastructure project to commuters, commercial drivers, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. Staff from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and other members of the project team will be available to answer questions and
provide details on this next phase of the project. Atop resident worries are traffic flow at the interchange, the residual effect on the neighbouring McKenzie/Burnside intersection, Cuthbert Holmes Park, consideration of transit, cycling and pedestrians, and support for options where the highway passes underneath AdmiralsMcKenzie. Comments or questions can be called into the project team by 250-387-8700, or by email to mckenzieinterchange@gov.bc.ca.

SAANICH NEWS - Friday, February 12, 2016
Finding new roads with the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS Orlando, FL. – Stepping into the humidity of Southern Florida’s air can feel like a sudden slap to the face. Within moments of leaving the hotel, the fresh and clean sensation of a good night’s sleep and a rejuvenating shower can be wiped away, only to be replaced by that sticky feeling we try to avoid. Soon after, the comfort of 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS sport seats, a rumbling 6.2-litre, V8 and the glory of air conditioning eliminates the discomfort of the Sunshine State’s clammy atmosphere. Getting this vehicle was the luck of the draw. Here’s why. Chevrolet created a not-soconventional drive program for the launch of their iconic, sixth-generation muscle by Alexandra Straub car. Drivers picked keys out of a bag to make it fair for everyone, meaning, there weren’t enough of any one type of car, whether it was a V6 or V8, manual or automatic transmission. All I wanted was a manual. Didn’t matter the engine size. I ended up with a six-speed manual Camaro SS. Divine. Instead of the conventional turn-by-turn drive route, we were challenged to find our own way to our final destination. My outbound flight would be from New Orleans. I had 36 hours to get there. Even though I was flying without a co-pilot, I teamed up with newfound friends from techradar.com (Matt and Max) in another Camaro. Initially, the desire was to visit the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama was the first destination. Though, a late start and upwards of 1,000 kilometres to drive in less than eight hours would be difficult. Nevertheless, we set off north towards Birmingham. We would stop along the way to check out the “Live Baby Gators” at the Florida Citrus Centres. We drove along interstate 10 heading west with weeping willows swaying overhead. We stopped at the Waffle House – a southern US dining staple – for some less than healthy sustenance. Our marathon drive continued along stretches of highway where huge billboards were the only scenery. When we needed to communicate, we could use the Camaro’s Apple CarPlay to send messages to each other. Handsfree, of course. The Driver Mode Selector allowed me to swap between Sport, Tour and Snow/Ice (and also Track with SS.) These drive modes instantly tailor up to eight different vehicle characteristics. The Tour mode would seem to be a natural fit for the long drive, but I had it in Sport and

loved every second. Eventually, we pulled into John’s City Diner in Birmingham for a late dinner of some deep-fried goodness. Over dinner, we debated the next step: we could stay in Birmingham or push forward to Jackson, Mississippi. Staying in Alabama would make for a longer journey the next day. We pushed on and when I shut her down at that chosen destination I had clocked 1,291 kilometres (807 miles). Surprisingly, after over 12 hours behind the wheel, my back wasn’t aching as much as I had expected. The sport seats proved to be firm yet flexible enough to still be comfortable and keep me in place. Even with the chassis 28 percent stiffer, the ride isn’t bone-jarring, not for me at least. Though, don’t expect it to take road imperfections gingerly. It is a performance vehicle after all so running a tight ship is mandatory. Besides, there aren’t 455 horses under the hood without reason. My voice had tired from singing at the top of my lungs and talking on the phone – I was driving alone, after all. The desire to venture along this section of the program that spanned over the 48 contiguous states was purely personal. I’d never driven in this part of the United States – with the exception of Florida – and wanted to experience what it had to offer. The scenery wasn’t quite as epic as the sultry waves of Florida’s coastline, and all in all, it was quite barren, but there was still joy AUTO in the journey.

From downtown Jackson, Mississippi, we continued our last leg of the trip towards New Orleans, Louisiana. The total count of states we had driven through four states, adding 1,600 kilometres to the odometer (actually the US-spec car counted in miles!) When I stepped out of the car in New Orleans, a familiar humidity greeted me. I embraced it with open arms, stretched and thought about how my next trip to this part of the U.S. would include the Barber Motorsports Museum, more deep dried food and an evening on Bourbon Street. And, I hope another 2016 Camaro SS with a manual transmission. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS with the six-speed manual has a starting MSRP of $42,150 (excluding destination charges, fees and applicable taxes.)

Paralympians headed to UVic Hall of Fame It’s rare that the University of Victoria produces a winter Paralympian, with none as successful as skier Lauren Woolstencroft. Woolstencroft joins swimmer Stephanie Dixon and all 11 members of the 1981-82 Vikes women’s rowing crew as the 2016 class entering the UVic Sports Hall of Fame. The all-women class will be celebrated at the annual Celebration of Champions event in the Victoria Conference Centre on March 30. It’s the 14th class to enter the UVic Sports Hall of Fame, founded in 2002. This year’s class features two Paralympians, Woolstencroft and swimmer Stephanie Dixon, as well as one of the most decorated group of Vikes women’s rowers in the 1981-82 crew. Woolstencraft, of Calgary, was born missing her left arm below the elbow and both legs below the knees. She earned an electrical engineering degree with distinction at UVic in 2005 while excelling on the world stage as an alpine skier. A three-time Paralympian (2002, 2006 and 2010), Woolstencroft won 10 medals – eight gold, one silver and one bronze, and was the first winter Paralympian to win five gold medals in the same games (2010) after she took first in the Giant Slalom, Slalom, Super-G, Downhill Skiing and Super Combined. Dixon was born without her right leg and hip, and began swimming at the age of two. By 14 she represented Canada on the Paralympic team, and went on to compete at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, earning 19 Paralympic medals – seven gold, 10 silver and two bronze. She is the only Paralympian to win the same event in world record time at three consecutive games. Dixon also tied a record five gold medals at a single summer Paralympic games, a distinction that Woolstencroft holds for winter Paralympians. Dixon was the Vikes Athlete of the Year in 2004 and 2005. She graduated with a bachelor of psychology in 2007. Over the course of 1981 and 1982, UVic boasted one of the most successful groups of women’s rowers in the program’s history. Vikes rowers Lisa Roy, Janice Mason, Katie Burke, Shelley Donald and Andrea Schreiner Stapff were all 1980 Olympians. They were joined by Canadian junior and national team members Carla Pace and Lorna Schultz Nicholson, and newcomers Joanell Storm, Lisa Robertson, Marilyn Brain Campbell, and Carolyn Trono. The group won the Championship Eights titles at the 1981 and 1982 Royal Canadian Henley regatta and the 1981 inaugural and 1982 Canadian University Rowing Championships. They were Victoria’s Team of the Year in 1981 when they won the 198182 USA national championship by two tenths of a second.

positive.” With the album being pressed, Andersen is embarking on a 60-date tour, starting in Duncan, with the second show at the University of Victoria’s Farquhar Auditorium on Feb. 17. Local fans will be among the first to hear his new material live, and Andersen promises the show will be different from his previous performances on the Island. “I’m actually bringing a band with me, which is the first time I’ve toured with a band in a long time,” he said. “I think most people have seen me solo, other than a few festivals this past year. “It’s going to be
different for people that way, seeing me with a band. I’m really looking forward to it – it’s been a lot of fun doing rehearsals.” The show is nearly sold out, but tickets are still available for $26.50, $34.50 and $42.50. Tickets can be purchased through the Ticket Centre, online at tickets.uvic.ca or by phone at 250-721-8480. Also this month, the Farquhar Auditorium is hosting the Red Poppy Ladies’ Percussion Group’s performance of Mulan on Feb. 14 and an evening with Indian scholar and environmental activist Vandana Shiva on Feb. 29. Tickets are still available for both shows.

Like Weightless, the songs are, for the most part, live off the floor, capturing the combined talent of everyone on each track. “We sat in the room together and kind of jammed that stuff,” said Andersen. “Then we just added the stuff after as far as guitar solos or parts with the horns section. New York City might seem like an odd recording location for a musician from a town of less than 1,800 people, but for New Brunswick blues guitarist Matt Andersen, it was perfect. Last year, the longhaired Maritimer set up a makeshift studio inside the New Yorker Hotel to record his latest album, Honest Man, due out Feb. 26. While his hometown of Perth-Andover has a fraction of New York’s population, the urban mecca proved to be rich with musical talent, to the point he could almost “handpick” artists to shape the disc’s sound. “We were right in the middle of Manhattan, like a block from Madison Square Garden,” said Andersen. “The vibe down there was different than the country studios I’m used to. The setup was pretty modest – a few hotel rooms were gutted out and turned into a studio, so it felt a lot like a project studio.” But while NYC was the right fit for recording, Andersen said the music is still inspired by his life and personal experiences deeply rooted in Atlantic Canada. Influences like Creedence Clearwater Revival and acoustic Eric Clapton show through the new tunes like they did on his 2014 Juno-nominated album, Weightless. “They both feel the same to me, as far as how the sound comes out,” he said, comparing the albums. “I definitely hear (producer Commissioner) Gordon’s influence a lot as far as the drum grooves. Some of that was pushing me out of my boundaries a little bit, which is really great. I don’t like it to be too familiar because then you get too comfortable and start to sound comfortable.” Andersen co-wrote

Sweat Together to Stay Happy Together

laude and Donna weren’t aware of the research. They didn’t know that studies show that if you perspire together, you start a fire together. That’s right – couples that sweat together are more likely to stay together, and feel more satisfied with their relationships and their partner. Donna joined Fit For Life in September 2015. She was hanging around Athlone Court in Oak Bay when she saw a brochure for the age 55+ fitness studio. This interested her because she liked being active – she used to be a tai chi practitioner. A month later Claude joined. They’re now regulars at the gym. Donna enthused, “I feel really energized after working out. I’m stronger – my upper body strength is improved, as is my cardiovascular.” She declared, “I can now go up Mount Doug without being winded!” Claude reported, “I like the gym’s atmosphere, lack of pressure, congenial staff, reasonably nice music, and Maggie the dog.” He adds, “It’s not always possible to exercise outdoors and in winter it’s particularly nice to exercise indoors. The machines are nice, efficient and comfortable and I really like the whole experience.” Working out together is especially fun for Donna and Claude because they’re now exercising with two friends, Terry and Bob. It’s a social event as well as a health event. If you’d like that feeling of togetherness that Claude and Donna (and Terry and Bob) have, check out Fit for Life in Oak Bay. Remember, perspire together to start a fire together … but you can still get in the zone if you’re on your own. Ask about February’s Totally Free Try Out. There’s no contracts. No annoying music. But a whole lot of fun – and great rates. We’re just above Fairways on Oak Bay Village. Or give us a call at 250-382-2328 to schedule your Totally Free Try Out. www.fit-4-life.ca

The Uptown Place condominium development has sold out of its two-phase development across the Pat Bay Highway from Saanich’s Gateway Village. The joint development brought together local family businesses Tri-Eagle Development Corporation and Jawl Residential, and was completed in two stages, with the first phase completed in December of 2014 and the second phase in September of 2015. The building consisted of one, two and three bedroom homes of various sizes. Prices ranged too, as the units were designed to match the demands of varying demographics, in addition to the
Prominent Uptown Place features are the building design and garden-level homes. The design, by principal architect Charles Kierulf of de Hoog and Kierulf Architects, contains oversized windows that accentuate the outdoors, continuous west coast cedar siding and soffits, and an overlapping flat metal roofline. Every home on the gardenlevel has a self-contained patio, yard and its own front door creating a “townhouse” feel without the stairs. This lessens the insular condominium building feeling often found in traditional developments, and enhances the interaction between the streetscape to the building and its residents. The building earned real estate industry accolades, having won the award for “Best Condominium Project or Mixed-Use Development” in Greater Victoria from the Victoria Residential Builders Association.
