Nugent, who declined to speak with the Observer, first got involved with the Pacific Salmon Foundation through a

partnership program, in which Naden and other sport fishing companies give $25 per guest to support the Foundation’s conservation work.

In 2014, Naden doubled its pledge to $50 per guest.

Besides his work on the board of directors, Nugent, who lives in Calgary, assists the Foundation by telling other Alberta anglers about its conservation program.

The SAR tech prepared the ill person to be hoisted

up to the helicopter in a carrier.

An update on the person’s condition is unavailable due to privacy laws.

Earlier Friday morning, Haugen told CBC radio that the All-Native tournament is not a political venue, and any LNG protests should stay off the court.

Haugen also noted that the tournament is held on Tsimshian territory, and Tsimshian chiefs have approved LNG projects.

All-Native is not only the best basketball tournament, he said, but the best event of the year — one that brings together First Nations from Alaska to Vancouver Island.

But in the last few years, Collinson and other Saints players who oppose LNG have grown tired of seeing LNG company banners in the stadium, hearing LNG ads on CFNR radio, even LNG-branded noisemakers in the hands of Haida fans.

“They’re imposing themselves on your home, and not only that, they’re flashy

about it,” he said.

Collinson said the team only changed its mind about boycotting this year because so many local fans and elders told them they should go because it’s their tournament.

Dave Wahl, the Saints’ long-time coach, agrees.

“The fans are important, the players are important, and to me they’re the true owners of this tournament,” said Wahl.

“So when they have something to say, they should not be ‘shushed.’”

Forestry office asks for input on closing Survey Creek FSR

By Andrew Hudson Haida Gwaii Observer Unused by timber companies and unloved by nearby fish, the Survey Main logging road will likely be shut down this summer.

But first, staff at the local B.C. forestry office want hear from anyone who uses it to get into the backcountry.

Heading north off the Queen Charlotte Main, Survey Main provides one route to the Tlall Conservancy — a protected area southeast of Tlell that is co-managed by the Haida Nation and B.C. Parks.

Several hiking trails wind through area, including the Three-Mile Creek and Monique Creek trails, both of which can be accessed from Survey Main.

Taan Forest recently built a newer logging road — Lakes Main — that reaches the access for Three-Mile Creek. But once Survey Main is de-activated, the Monique trail would likely be walk-in only.

Lynn Lee, chair of the Tlell Watershed Society, said the society hasn’t promoted either trail for years — even five or 10 years ago, the access road was so rough that neither was easy to get to.

Larry Duke, an engineering and recreation officer for the B.C. forestry office, says based on what he has heard so far, Survey Main could be the rare road-closure where most backcountry users will keep the access most important to them.

A long stretch of Survey Main road runs close to Survey Creek, and the road also crosses many of its tributaries.

Along with geotechnical work to make sure the road can be left alone without any slides or collapses — a risk to people and streams — parts of Survey Main will likely be opened up to restore natural watercourses.

had to use bridges or open-bottom culverts over fish-bearing streams, Duke said de-activation crews often have to dig out pipe-style culverts that are actually barriers to fish.

In some cases, he said, crews add ‘new’ stream crossings, since many old roads were designed to collect multiple streams into a ditch before running the combined flow through a single culvert.

“The trick that comes with this is that doing that work really shuts down access to all vehicles,” said Duke.

Even if a truck or ATV could fjord a stream bed, that is not something biologists are likely to approve on Haida Gwaii, where nearly every stream is fish-bearing.

Nonetheless, Duke said he has been able to help other backcountry users before, such as a runner

from Queen Charlotte who asked that the hilly Skowkona forestry road be de-activated such that it could still be used as a trail.

Unless a timber company or other tenure holder decides it needs to maintain it, Survey Main will be de-activated during the summer fisheries window — a time when most fish have left the stream or river gravels.

Cullen says interim pipelines rules are rushed, lacking detail

That is local MP Nathan Cullen’s take on the Liberal government’s new climate-change and consultation tests for pipeline projects.

“It was rushed,” says Cullen, who is the NDP environment critic as well as the MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley.

Billed as temporary steps to help restore public trust in pipeline reviews, the new rules will apply to existing proposals, such as Kinder Morgan’s bid to twin its Trans Mountain pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby, B.C. The National Energy Board is expected to decide whether or not to recommend that project in May, and the new rules will take effect after the NEB reports.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has said a full review of federal environmental regulations is coming, but will take years to do.

While he welcomes the new temporary steps, Cullen said they leave many questions unanswered.

“What the government has said is that they’re going to include greenhouse gases in their consideration, but they don’t tell us how much,” he said.

“Is it one per cent of a factor, is it 50 per cent? Is there a limit that a pipeline can emit?”

The new climate-change test requires companies to estimate the ‘upstream’ and direct emissions of any new pipelines, but not the ‘downstream’ emissions caused when end-users burn the fuel.

Cullen said unless the government sets

a public threshold for emissions, cabinet ministers can look at those estimates in private and decide whether or not a project passes based largely on subjective feelings.

It is important to fully account for greenhouse gas emissions, Cullen added, especially after Canada joined calls to limit global warming to 1.5 C at the Paris climate summit in December.

“Funding 100 solar panels is quickly wiped out if you approve a raw bitumen pipeline through British Columbia,” he said.

“There should be no more free dumping.”

After speaking with First Nations leaders, Cullen said many were surprised by the Liberals’ temporary rules, which he said was ironic given they also include a call for a ministerial assistant to consult with First Nations along proposed pipeline routes.

That is another good idea, said Cullen, but again, it depends how it is carried out.

Cullen mentioned that in 2013, former federal negotiator Doug Eyford delivered a report to the Harper government on improving consultations with First Nations regarding west coast energy projects.

“He went around, consulted, came back with some very good recommendations, met with me a few times,” said Cullen.

“And then Mr. Harper ignored everything he said.”

Cullen said the issue remains unresolved under the Liberals.

“How do we come to a ‘no’ or a ‘yes,’ and what role do First Nations have in that process?” he asked.

“That will be a Gordian knot for this government to untie.”

Boat launch tenure The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources informed Port Clements village staff their lease on the inlet by the boat launch is in need of renewal. Village staff recommended that council renew the lease with the ministry.

Village staff do not anticipate that any changes to the lease will be needed as the use of the area has not changed since the original lease was put in place. It is not yet known how long the new lease will be for.

Property easement Village council received a letter from a property owner asking for the easement on his property be extended for another 10 years.

The property required an easement for an addition on the house, which extends onto the village-owned St. Mark’s property. Village Council felt comfortable with a 10 year easement as it is what they have done before with this property. A verbal agreement between Village of Port Clements and the Diocese of Caledonia was asked to be honoured to ensure that the property of St. Mark’s would stay intact. The village previously reached out to the Diocese of Caledonia to inquire if they could sell a small piece of the property to the resident, but were told the diocese would prefer if the Village honoured a verbal agreement and left the property as it was intended. The property owner is now renewing the easement.

How to save a doomed whale

A free workshop will answer that question and many others about how to help marine mammals in trouble.

Hosted Feb. 19 at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay, the day-long workshop will feature four speakers who work firsthand with injured, stressed, or dead marine mammals.

“We’re hoping to have lots of practical information,” says Lynn Lee, a local marine ecologist and one of the organizers.

The workshop will look at several real-life examples of marine mammal incidents from Haida Gwaii.

Speakers include Paul Cottrell, a marine mammals coordinator for DFO; Dr. Stephen Raverty, a B.C. veterinary ecologist; Wendy Szaniszlo, a marine mammal ecologist; and Caitlin Birdsall, a biologist with the Vancouver Aquarium.

Among other things, the 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. workshop will cover how to report an incident using the 24-hour hotline run by the B.C. Marine Mammal Response Network (1-800465-4336).

Public wary of public places bylaw

By Stacey Marple Haida Gwaii Observer The Village of Queen Charlotte public places bylaw came under heavy fire at a public consultation meeting Jan. 27, as members of the public spoke openly about their opposition to the bylaw and their displeasure at where it was heading.

Village staff were pleased with the number of people who turned out, after no one showed up to previous council meetings when the bylaw was on the agenda.

Village council heard public concern that the bylaw did not offer protection for youth, but instead threatened to drive parties further out of town, out of easy reach from police and paramedics should something go wrong.

The lengthy bylaw was found to be too vague for those attending the meeting.

Mayor Greg Martin explained council could have passed this bylaw without public consultation, but highlighted the importance of public input.

“We do need something in place,” he said. We are not throwing it away.”

Council would like to hold a committee of whole meeting in the near future to discuss the proposed bylaw at further length.

“I’m not sure what direction the council will take with this,” Ms. Wiedeman told the Observer.

Council has made it clear that there is no true rush to get this bylaw done.

Mayor Martin previously said they would like to see it in place in time for graduation at Queen Charlotte Secondary.

It was hoped,by some of the public at the meeting that the bylaw would be thrown out entirely.

Feb. 17, 2011 School District 50 superintendent Angus Willson presented findings that showed the population of Haida Gwaii was declining faster than other communities in B.C. In 2010 the population of Haida Gwaii declined by 2.3 per cent according to BC Stats. Mr. Wilson also presented other stats that compared Haida Gwaii to the rest of the province.

Haida Gwaii had one of the worst per capita property crimes.

Feb. 9, 2006 Port Clements had agreed to allow the Roman Catholic Church to use the old St. Mark’s church building once a week, as soon as some repairs were completed.

Council made the decision after reading a letter from Rev. John J. Smith, requesting the use of the church for Sunday afternoon services. The building needed a sink installed, a leak and broken window to be fixed.

Feb. 8, 1996 Tw o C r e s t o n men who tried to buy goods in a Fort Macleod Alberta hardware store with money orders stolen from the Tlell Post Office were charged with breaking and entering. They were also charged with fraud and uttering a forged document. Feb. 6, 1986 Just months after BC Ferries bought the Kwuna off the Ministry of Transportation the Queen Charlotte Islands Chamber of Commerce asked BC Ferries to extend the hours for the Kwuna. .

The Kwuna ran until 6 p.m. at the time which the group felt was inadequate and hampered even a simple interaction between communities. It was requested by the group to increase evening sailings to 10 p.m.

In the lead up to the All Native Basketball Tournament, and the Skidegate Saints’ widely publicized promise to protest LNG sponsorship of the games, coach Dave Wahl’s position was just one of many, but one that speaks to an important element of the issue: if someone feels deeply about an issue, “they should not be shushed.”

The Saints’ proposal was for an appropriate and dignified protest. Year after year, as the branding of LNG projects permeates further into the tournament—banners in the stadium, ads on the radio and LNG-branded noisemakers in the hands of Haida fans—the Saints asked opponents to wear a blue T-shirt emblazoned with a counter message: No LNG—A clean environment = A healthy community.

The Saints and others were allowed their protest

during the opening ceremony, but the president of the tournament committee, Peter Haugen, added the tournament is not a political venue, and therefore would not permit any displays of protest on the actual court during games.

Mr. Haugen declined comment to the Observer, but in an earlier interview with CBC he noted the Haida were guests in Tsimshian territory, where the local chiefs have approved LNG projects. In our view, this unnecessarily elevated the politics of the issue, offering only to divide nations in a fashion the oil and gas companies themselves have been accused of time and again.

If this is where the committee sees the conversation heading, they need to reverse their momentum.

heralding the tournament with local businesses and securing their sponsorship. To this day the ANBT is self-financed, a notable achievement that allows organizers the autonomy to choose the direction of the games, and the message they want to spread.

Whether a group is for or against LNG, what message are we to take from an organizing committee that knowingly accepts a sponsorship that will fracture the unity this tournament was originally intended to foster?

Financing the ANBT is a huge undertaking— make no mistake. But accepting what we can only assume is a hefty sum from LNG interests is lazy.

The board needs to start knocking on doors again, redirect the tournament from the cusp of serving someone’s business interests, and back to the purpose of serving the people—the players, the fans and their communities—healthy communities.

Pacific Northern Gas may have asked for an extension on the size of natural gas pipeline it would build in Kitimat to the location for one or more liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant projects but that does not mean those projects are being shelved.

AltaGas and Idemitsu Canada are partners in the Douglas Channel LNG project which would use natural gas being pumped through the existing Pacific Northern Gas pipleine.

But they are also partners in a company called Triton who would build a second project and a third project, Cedar, is also under consideration.

Triton and Cedar would require a new 30-inch diameter pipeline called the looping pipeline, twinning the existing PNG 10-inch diameter line from Prince George to about Telkwa.

It would then loop behind Smithers and follow through the upper Class 1 Section of the Zymoetz (Copper) River to a point where it would more or less meet the existing 10-inch PNG pipeline in the mid-Zymoetz River Valley near the confluence with Kitnayakwa Creek, and then on to Kitimat.

This letter is focused on the 30-inch diameter pipeline to be constructed in the Class 1 Section of the Zymoetz River Valley, not the other LNG plant proposals in Kitimat which is part of a larger regional LNG discussion. This new pipeline is an ill conceived, terrible idea and not acceptable.

The upper Zymoetz Valley is beautiful, almost a pristine river valley with much of its original old growth timber still remaining.

Wolves, grizzly and black bears, moose,

mountain goats and a myriad of other species of mammals and birds are indigenous to the upper watershed. A population of wild summer run steelhead that are ever so special, coho, chinook and sockeye salmon and other native species spawn and rear in the upper watershed. There is a “special management zone” along the river to protect the integrity and the natural values of this very unique ecosystem.

Tourism and resident angling are of a very high quality and value. Some special places in our province should never be threatened by industrial development and this river valley is one of them.

The frustrating part is that there is an alternate route for the pipeline next to the PNG line running through Telkwa, along the Telkwa River and through the Telkwa Pass to the Clore River. The new line could then follow along Trapline Creek, through a connecting pass and down Williams Creek to Kitimat.

The province and proponent need to rethink what they are doing. Every effort should be made to consolidate as many pipelines as possible into single corridors where the responsibility to carry out impeccable planning and construction would remain imperative in order to diminish the need for reclamation. Respect for natural values must always be the priority.

Virtually every nationally and internationally renowned salmon/steelhead river in the Skeena watershed is facing a pipeline. The province must reflect upon what is being proposed and develop a dialogue with the public and First Nations to find a solution to the nightmare that has taken over the watershed.

lanning a trip to Haida Gwaii is a daunting task for tourists. The “edge of the world” holds an allure and a mystery that both attracts and intimidates our visitors, who may not understand or appreciate the nuances of life on these remote islands. Through a combination of online research, visitor centre staff, and advice from local businesses, trips are typically planned by the visitors themselves. It can be time-consuming for the visitor, researching and reserving every aspect of the trip, and for businesses, responding to hundreds of inquiries that may or may not result in a sale. There’s another way to approach trip-planning, and it might just be a good fit for Haida Gwaii.

By combining products, businesses can create “packages” that offer the visitor a selection of services and experiences at one price. Almost 20 businesses gathered at a Community Futures workshop last weekend to learn more about the idea and discuss how it could be implemented here. Facilitated by Kelly Whitney-Squire and supported by MIEDS and Gwaalagaa Naay, the workshop started by reviewing the visitor experience, and how we market Haida Gwaii.

Healthy debate surrounded every topic, demonstrating the commitment and enthusiasm of local businesses and stakeholders. Throughout the day, important big-picture topics were also mentioned and recorded, ranging from strategic plans to Destination Management Organizations to marketing resources and international visitors.

With this background information and plenty of ideas percolating, the next session of the workshop on February 20th will guide us through the process of developing, costing, marketing, and selling tour packages. Small groups of businesses could work together to combine their services into a small package, such as a full day of activities in one community, or entry to museums across the islands. However, to create the “all-inclusive”, convenient, comprehensive tour package experience that visitors often seek, one organization could coordinate package development with businesses across the islands.

MIEDS is exploring the idea of offering a tour packaging service as a social enterprise. By working with local businesses, we could offer the “Haida Gwaii experience” to visitors at one price, with accommodations, meals, activities and attractions included. Businesses would spend less administration time booking guests, visitors have a relaxing experience, and MIEDS would collect a commission to cover our staff costs. We would have to expect some challenges though; visitors may have high expectations, and working on a fixed schedule is always complicated by the infamous “Haida Gwaii time”.

As we develop the business plan and discuss the idea with our stakeholders, we need input from local businesses.

Old Massett basketball fans cheer teams and rally for safety

By Andrew Hudson Haida Gwaii Observer A fan rally in Old Massett had the village booming a full week before any team could make a move at the All-Native Basketball Tournament.

It was the first Old Massett rally in years, and likely the first of its kind.

Facing stands packed with red-dressed Warriors, Watchmen, and Wild fans, Peter Lantin, president of the Council of the Haida Nation, flipped his cap backwards to take on another roles — All-Native sportscaster.

As he called out their names, fans cheered as players and coaches from Old Massett’s intermediate, masters, seniors and women’s teams came running into a spotlight at centre court and high-fived their teammates.

Each team also picked a number-one fan to come down and say a few words to the crowd.

Age 82, Robin Brown said he has rarely missed a tournament in all its 57-year history.

One of the first ball players to come out of Old Massett, Brown can well remember the days when teams arrived in Prince Rupert not by ferry, but by fish boat.

“When you get encouragement like this for ball teams, they try harder,” he said from experience, thanking everyone in the stands.

Besides the cheers and super fans, what made the rally stand out were the games everyone played before sharing a community dinner.

a series of games — walking a line with “beer goggles” on, racing to roll a condom on a banana — that shared messages about fan safety.

A public health nurse, an RCMP officer, and others were on hand to talk about trouble that can come up outside the game: violence, sexual assault, drug abuse, and sexually-transmited infections.

“We all hear stories about what’s going on over on the mainland,” said Lantin.

“We need to get together as a community, and make sure we take care of one another when we get over to Prince Rupert.”

been playing together for over three years.

“We’re head and shoulders above where we started because of their maturity level now,” he said.

“I feel this one is their strongest squad yet.”

Likewise, coach Duffy Edgars sounded confident in the Warriors intermediate team — with lots of returning players, he hopes for a top-three finish.

“I think it’s just playing together for a long time, and hard defence — defence win games,” said Edgars.

“Just clicking, gelling together, knowing each other’s role.”

As for the rally, Smith said it was a welcome and far-sighted idea — a good way to get a jump on problems before they start.

“I’ve never heard of any communities doing what we’re doing,” he said.

“It was the whole island that pitched in and helped the ladies team get to AllNative this year,” said Richard Smith, a veteran player who is coaching this year’s Haida Wild women’s team.

Between ferry costs and travel for off-island players, not to mention hotels for the week, every All-Native team raises thousands of dollars through raffles, fish and chip sales, sponsors and private donations.

“I want to say haw’aa to all our supporters that made donations, bought a ticket, anything to help support us,” said Smith, echoing comments by all the coaches.

“Without them, we’re not getting anywhere.”

Communities Initiative now open to non-profits The Gwaii Trust Society board of directors has made some important additional information available about the new Vibrant Haida Gwaii Communities Initiative.

Funding is available to nonprofit community groups as well as local governments. The program is intended to fund community projects that support the maintenance, creation, support and development of necessary community infrastructure as determined by individual communities on Haida Gwaii.

Applicants must submit a letter of support or council resolution from their appropriate local governing bodies.

In the case of applications from Graham Island North, Graham Island Central and Graham Island South, a letter of support from the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District will be required in addition to a support letter from the local council.

The Gwaii Trust is making $7 million available over the next four years for this initiative.

Designated communities will have access to up to $250,000 per year, and may bank the annual funding commitment to finance a larger project.

For the purpose of this program, the designated communities are: Graham Island North, Graham Island Central, Graham Island South, Moresby Island (Area E), Old Massett, Skidegate, and the Council of the Haida Nation.

These areas correspond to the communities as set out in the Gwaii Trust constitution.

Not your mother’s oatmeal cookies Cooking on the Rising Tide

ur family’s favourite oatmeal cookies, I can guarantee, will be different from yours! I have never come across the same oatmeal cookie in anyone else’s house and in all the years that I’ve been tasting oatmeal cookies that’s a lot of different kinds of the same kind I figure! Oatmeal cookies are forgiving. You add the right amount of fat, oats and sugar and it all sorts itself out, baking them into crispy, chewy, cakey, crunchy... they’re all good! This is the kind of cookie you can grab a couple of and convince yourself that really, with a cup of coffee or tea is pretty much the same as a meal....

My mother used lard and margarine in her oatmeal cookies, as well my grandmother on my dad’s side, plus a lot of other ingredients that included chocolate chips, nuts, etc. My moth-

er-in-law made some killer oatmeal cookies with chicken fat, skimmed from roasts, soup, etc. So sometimes our oatmeal cookies would taste like rosemary and thyme...lol equally delicious! This cookie of mine is straight out of the Canadian Living cookbook, to which I’ve added my own twist with long-thread coconut and Thompson raisins, homemade vanilla, and butter (not margarine). It adds up to making a fairly minimalist cookie. I am currently trying to use up a 10 kg bag of quick oats; using large flake oats will give you a different cookie, but even those will disappear fairly quickly around my house. Anyways, I try to make them often, having something not too fussy as far as baking goes means you’re ready for whatever comes your way. They travel well to the beach, freeze well, and they are even better after mellowing in their tin a week or so....yeah good luck with that!

Kris’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies 1-1/3 c butter 2 c packed brown sugar -Cream well then add;

2 eggs 2 tbsp vanilla Mix well. Meanwhile put all of the dry ingredients into a separate bowl; 3 c quick cooking oats 2 c flour 1 tsp each soda and baking powder 1 tsp cinnamon Generous pinch of salt.

1 c Thompson raisins 1 c long-thread coconut Mix it all together, making sure everything is well distributed, then add to creamed mixture, mix till everything is even-looking, no dry bits left in the bottom of the bowl!

Roll into smallish balls, about a tablespoon full with room around them to spread slightly on a parchment lined baking sheet. Flatten slightly with your fingertips and bake for 12-13 minutes at 350 degrees in the middle of your oven. Let cool on a rack before eating if you can although they are fabulous warm! Try them with a tablespoon of vanilla icecream while still warm sandwiched between two cookies, just not for breakfast!

Explosive tanker scenario rattles SQCRD directors

By Kevin Campbell As Haida Gwaii concerns itself with the risks of oil tankers at sea, Prince Rupert has a new set of concerns with the ships peacefully sitting in port.

A new report and map from the Common Sense Canadian and Wilderness Committee have raised some eyebrows at the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District (SQCRD).

They detail potential dangers around LNG tanker carriers and the map indicates hazard zones and were brought forward at the latest SQCRD board meeting by Director Des Nobels.

The article explores what would happen if a tanker explodes accidentally or intentionally and what the impact would be on area populations and wildlife.

Nobels was disturbed by the report, which shows the graphic outlining the various danger zones of where habitats might be devastated by a potential explosion.

Developed by Sandia National Laboratories at the request of the US Department of Energy and mapped by Wilderness Committee, three zones of concern are identified: the first within 500 metres, the second 1,600 metres, and the third 3,500 metres from a blast.

fined gas explosions and asphyxiation.

“For the longest time my community (Dodge Cove) and others have been pointing at the numbers that Sandia has put out in what was required for best practices in terms of our industry and safe practices as well, but we never really knew what that looked like visually,” said Nobels.

“In the unlikely event [of an explosion] you can see from this that Prince Rupert is gone, folks. We’re gone. This is something very serious. When I saw this, I got extremely disturbed ... and one of the reasons I got scared is because we at the Regional District are in charge of emergency preparedness and coordination in the region, yet we have nothing that indicates how we would deal with an incident of this sort.”

Among the best practices listed in the article and the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators, LNG ports “must be located where LNG vapours from a spill or release cannot affect civilians; ship berths must be far from the ship transit fairway to prevent collision; must be located where they do not conflict with other waterway uses; narrow inland waterways are to be avoided; and waterways containing navigation hazards are to be avoided as LNG ports.”

Nobels expressed dismay at the lack of information from the province or the Port of Prince Rupert on dealing with some of the worst-case scenario impacts and questioned whether the area’s first responders are also aware of the implications. The director asked the other members of the board to read the article by the district’s next meeting, at which point Nobels plans to make a motion to write a letter to Minister of Transport Marc Garneau and to the province to ask them what they have in mind for the issue, and has also invited the Port of Prince Rupert to an upcoming Regional District meeting to inform board members of any emergency plans and to retain those plans on file for the District’s information purposes.

“I don’t want to be perceived as fear-mongering, but I think this has been rather under-played by the Province and the industry. The industry’s own best practices do not allow for this. This is in total contravention to their own best practices, to conduct this, and I think that this is something we need to take a very clear look at,” said Nobels.

Speaking of the three-day weekend, the football game was fun, but we all know why we watched: for the ads and the musical show.

Bruce Ives, the person who got this project of “Operation Refugees Haida Gwaii” now has the backing of Literacy Haida Gwaii. The goal is to sponsor two families, (of up to eight people in each). The plan is to have one family in Sandspit, and one in Charlotte. There are a number of ways to support this project. By donating dollars at Northern Savings Credit Union: Trust Account #7392087, by sending a cheque to box 448, in Charlotte, or by credit card on-line.

You can also give donations in kind, such as furniture and clothing. We may be a population of only 4,500 people on Haida Gwaii, but I know that we are a generous

group of people that always steps up when others need our help. So I think that the goal of $50,000 is attainable.

Valentine’s Day is Sunday, February 14th, and I know that Masset’s “Valentino” will be happening sometime that week-end. So be on the look-out for posters and a date.

Next week, February 19th is when we can see the opening of the All Islands’ Art Show at 7 p.m. at the Haida Gwaii Museum in Skidegate. If you are interested in purchasing any of the art that is for sale, come early, because those gems go fast.
