Machete murderer’s appeal denied Claims that a judge erred in her direction to jury were quashed.

A man who used a machete to stab a Maple Ridge man to death has lost an appeal of his murder conviction.

In June 2014, a B.C. Supreme Court jury found Adam Arthur Ronald Deboo guilty of the January 2012 first-degree mur-

der of Brandon Howson, 26.

About a week after Howson’s body was found in a field in Pitt Meadows, Deboo admitted to police that he had killed Howson, claiming Howson had threatened him a few times.

At trial, he again admitted to having killed Howson, but denied having planned the slaying, an element that has to be proved for a murder conviction.

He claimed he was acting in self-defence.

The jury didn’t believe him and he was convicted of murder. He received the mandatory sentence of life in prison with

no parole eligibility for 25 years.

Deboo raised a number of grounds on appeal, including that the trial judge, Justice Gail Dickson, had erred in her instructions to the jury.

Specifically, he argued that Dickson was wrong to tell the jury they couldn’t use a statement Deboo made to a third party to the effect that Howson had threatened Deboo’s girlfriend as proof that such a threat had occurred.

But in a ruling released Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the B.C. Court of Appeal rejected his arguments.

In his reasons for judgment, Justice David Frankel said there was “ambiguity” with respect to Deboo’s source of knowledge of the threat and an absence of any evidence capable of resolving that ambiguity.

The trial judge would have been in error if she had instructed the jury it could consider the statement as positive evidence that Howson had threatened the girlfriend, said Frankel.

Frankel’s ruling was agreed to by Justices Edward Chiasson and Gregory Fitch.

A march to remember missing or murdered loved ones is set to take place this Sunday, Feb. 14, in Maple Ridge.

At noon, the Memorial March of Maple Ridge – honouring missing or murdered loved ones – will begin at the bandstand in Memorial Peace Park.

Participants will march through the streets of downtown Maple Ridge, and end with a group circle to commemorate and remember the missing and murdered, explained organizer Yvonne Desabrais.

The Maple Ridge woman brought the walk – which originated in the Downtown Eastside – to her hometown last year, so “the healing could happen” here for family and friends in grieving.

Desabrais is marching for her mom, alongside other community members who want to honour someone they miss.

“We all have something in common and it’s painful,” she said.

“So let’s celebrate the people and keep them alive, and keep the energy strong.”

Last year’s march, she noted, had a focus on missing and murdered women. But, this year will be about men, as well.

“It’s just as important,” she explained.

The march begins at the bandstand, heads south on 224th Street, east on Lougheed Highway to 226th Street, past the bus loop, and then west on Dewdney Trunk Road, before finishing with a parade through Memorial Peace Park.

For Desabrais, the circle is about those missed, and not the perpetrator’s name who she said is heard “too often.”

She encouraged those planning to participate in the march to bring photos of their loved ones.

Korean vet mourned Flags at Pitt Meadows City hall flew at half mast last week, following the loss of one of the community’s most active Korean War veterans.

Cancer claimed the life of 85-year-old Warren Byrnell on Feb. 2, and a service is in the works to celebrate his life at the end of the month.

The Pitt Meadows man served as a mechanic with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during the Korean War. He worked for more than 35 years at BC Hydro, as an electrical operator and service man, retiring early to enjoy RV adventures with his wife Warren of 60 years, Lil. Byrnell In recent years, Byrnell became best known locally – and honoured nationally – as an advocate for better support of Canadian vets.

Much of that work was done in his capacity as vice-president, and most recently president, of the Korea Veterans Association.

Byrnell was predeceased by his wife last year. He’s survived by his four children, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

His service will be held at the Burnett Fellowship Church in Maple Ridge on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Crossroads Hospice Foundation or BC Cancer Foundation. > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘Byrnell’

British Columbia is adding more ambulances and paramedics in the Lower Mainland, but Maple Ridge’s Mayor Nicole Read expressed her concern and upset at learning none are earmarked for this community.

“I was surprised to learn that eight new ambulances were added in the Lower Mainland and none are allocated to our community,” Read said, in a statement released at the end of last week.

Watch for Alberta oil trap

T

he 2016 Speech from the Throne contains several items that give hope for the future.

There is a focus on agriculture and protecting local food supplies, attention to climate change and First Nations issues, and pledges to do something about the soaring price of housing that could lock a generation out of home ownership.

Near the beginning of the document, there is a section that would have seemed bizarre just a few short years ago.

British Columbians are warned about the economic trap that has enveloped Alberta.

“Over the decades, Alberta lost its focus,” said the LieutenantGovernor Judith Guichon, speaking for Premier Christy Clark’s Liberal government. “They expected their resource boom never to end, failed to diversify their economy and lost control of government spending.”

For decades, and particularly during the 1990s when the NDP were in power in B.C., it was popular to emphasize how much B.C. could learn from Alberta.

It seemed British Columbia was somehow to blame for not sitting atop a giant lake of oil during a time of rising fossil fuel prices.

Now, unfortunately for Albertans, the bust that follows all booms has arrived. And it turns out that rather than wisely investing, successive Conservative governments squandered the oil-generated wealth on government spending and low taxes.

We shouldn’t be too quick to point fingers. B.C. has a more diversified economy, but we still depend on many natural resources that are subject to the rising and falling tides of the world economy. And our own government is still going forward with plans for liquefied natural gas – albeit more slowly. It remains to be seen if that particular plan will bear economic fruit It’s good that we’re wary of falling into Alberta’s trap.

But hopefully our government will learn the larger lesson – that there is no economy so successful that it can’t be dealt a blow by factors entirely outside the control of any premier or legislature.

There was also a Simpson’s Sears catalogue office, smaller than the Eaton’s, that was popular with lots of families but not so much ours, and a Woolworth’s with a real-life lunch counter where sometimes we’d get lunch.

It just occurred to me: none of those apostrophes exist anymore.

They were all places we got to see only when we needed special stuff, like school supplies – and we were admonished to stick close while downtown.

It was exhilarating and exciting... and at least a bit scary.

I lost sight of Mom and Dad once in Woodward’s, ended up downstairs where they sold tools and sports stuff, and when I tugged on the sleeve of a man who was wearing Dad’s sweater, I discovered I had gotten myself hopelessly, desperately lost for several minutes that seemed like I had been damned to an eternity of lonely desertion.

I found them back by running around

in a panic, and they didn’t even know I’d been “gone.”

And I didn’t tell them. Barely out of my diapers, I knew the back woods at the farm as well as any country bumpkin could, and I was too embarrassed to admit that I’d got lost in a two-room department store.

It was a different world. Not just the nickel Coke, or the fact that half the town lived a long way out of town, and yet, pretty much everybody knew pretty much everybody else.

We lived differently.

Now I live half the distance from downtown, and traffic makes it twice as long to get there.

I barely know a tenth of the people who live within a stone’s throw, and that doesn’t make me the least bit unusual.

Moms and dads still love their kids, but now, if they make just a moment’s mistake, all the people who never bothered to know them sit in judgment.

Snub embarasses Trudeau-led Liberals Dear Editor, The prime responsibility of the prime minister and government is to keep Canadian citizens safe.

Vets deserve thanks Dear Editor, Below is an email sent to Pitt Meadows Mayor John Becker and council: I have seen this past week on the City of Pitt Meadows Facebook page the lovely tribute to Mr. Warren Byrnell.

Many people have sent their comments and likes in recognition of his service to our country.

On Oct.27, 2014 the City of Pitt Meadows and volunteers recognized veterans both still living and passed with the start of a banner program in Spirit Square.

Now with the passing of Mr. Byrnell and the flag at half staff, I have a question: if this will set a precedent or will there be a policy in place to recognize all Pitt Meadows veterans?

The banner program to which you refer was not a City program but rather a centennial project of the [Pitt Meadows] Community Foundation.

There has been no council discussion of a policy or program to recognize Pitt Meadows veterans generally.

Perhaps it is something that we should think about in the run up to Remembrance Day 2016.

(Correspondence back from Carole Kubb) Yes, 2014 saw a few foundation members take an active role in the banner program.

I was not on that committee, but am aware of the funding and time put into this project. 2016 may be another opportunity to recognize more veterans.

There were other names I am sure gathered and are available to be recognized.

Family members in Pitt Meadows would likely step forward, the criteria was set that would be made available to upcoming committee members.

Funding for such a project would have to be acquired, maybe a fundraiser just for this specifically.

Grade 11 student Cam Choo is testing the waters as stage manager for Garibaldi Secondary school’s upcoming production of Grease – The Musical.

Choo is taking a behind-thescenes role in the production, but is well-versed in the art of the spotlight.

Choo’ prior experience in acting aids his position as stage manager. He can relate to the other actors while directing them. He knows what it’s like to be in their shoes.

“I just know how it would be if I was acting,” Choo said.

Choo has also proven himself to be a talented writer, noted his theatre teacher Cyndy Lacroix.

Between acting, directing, and writing, Choo finds it difficult to pick a favourite. He likes all three.

Popular pub night aids struggling seniors, families Proceeds from a sold-out soiree at the legion go to a nutritional coupon program.

Haney Farmers Market, is co-hosting a fundraiser this weekend aimed at helping feed struggling families and seniors.

A sold-out pub night this Friday will help struggling seniors afford to eat.

A local seniors network is holding a fundraising dinner at the legion in Maple Ridge, which will help subsidize upwards of 85 local families and seniors to buy food at the local farmers markets.

Every year from June to October, the Haney Farmers Market lends a hand to low-income families and seniors, explained its executive director Eileen Dwillies.

People from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows,

the Katzie First Nation, and Port Coquitlam make use of the nutritional coupon program.

Participants receive $15 a week in coupons for a period of 16 weeks. The cou-

pons are redeemable at the market.

This week’s pub night is just the thing to help even more, Dwillies said, noting that funding for such a program is limited.

“Sadly, many more seniors and families

have requested support from the coupon program than it can serve, so we are looking for ways to increase funding,” Dwillies added.

The pub night is a joint collaboration between the market, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie Seniors Network, and the environmental advocacy group called Golden Ears Food Education and Strategy Action Table (GE FEAST).

Heather Treleaven, coordinator of the seniors network, was pleased that the first-time pub night sold out.

“Too often low-income seniors must choose between buying their medications and buying food,” she said.

Her goal for the pub night is to raise $2,400, which will be enough to add 10 more seniors to this year’s program.

Friday’s fundraiser, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will include $2,500 worth of silent auction items.

Trip to games a first for karate kid A Maple Ridge student is set to square off at the BC Winter Games.

Isaiah Ingram spends six days a week at either Maple Ridge Karate or West Wood Karate, training to be the best at kumite fighting.

And the Grade 8 student from Maple Ridge Secondary is hoping to see all of his hard work pay off at the upcoming B.C. Winter Games in Penticton.

Just before his fifth birthday, Rob Ingram recalled, his son showed interest in karate.

The sensei of the gym put Isaiah through some exercises and was impressed with how quickly he picked up the movements.

Almost a decade later, and Isaiah is a junior black belt, waiting to turn 15 when he will be old enough to become a full

black belt.

Isaiah explained that he practises both kumite fighting – the combat aspect of the sport and his primary focus, and kata – which is “a karate dance,” he said.

In kumite fighting, he continued, the winner is determined on a point based system, where punches equate to one point, kicks to the head are three points, and floor work is also three points.

In order to practise control, however, he added that the kicks are not about strength but about aim.

“It’s like a pat,” Isaiah continued.

In January at the nationals, where Isaiah placed third, in order to win a match, the athlete had to win by eight points.

His resume also includes two first place finishes at the provincial championships in 2014 and 2015.

Now, heading into his first Winter Games, the Grade 8 has qualified for both judo and karate.

“He qualified first in judo, and we didn’t expect him to,” his dad said.

“And later he qualified in karate.”

Isaiah will be competing against other 12 and 13 year-olds with a similar belt level as his, and hopes to make the most of his opportunity, facing other ath-

letes from across the province.

“It’s my only chance,” he said.

“I need to make it count.”

Isaiah explained that training has become even more intense leading up to his trip to Penticton, with most sessions consisting of sparring and conditioning.

“It’s been a little bit of a challenge to balance school and the gym,” he said with a shrug.

“The work isn’t easy, but it’s also not hard.”

Isaiah noted that the focus he practises in the sport of karate, has translated into his school work.

“It teaches you really to be humble.”

For Isaiah, the Winter games are a stepping stone towards his larger dream of competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“I hope it’s the right timing to be there,” Isaiah said. “I hope I can be well known in the WKF [World Karate Federation] and be world champion more than a few times.”

The Games run from Feb. 25 to Feb. 28.

Destiny Christensen won second place on both trampoline and the double mini in Level 2.

Level 3 athlete Jessica Franklin also medaled in two of her events, receiving second place on double mini and third place on

trampoline.

Remaining medalers included Sienna Kuznak, Emma Johnston, Izzy Moys, and Jayden Wicki.

Encouraged by the strong performances, Herman added she’s “excited to see what they will achieve at the next competition in March.”

Maple Ridge’s Zdena Novy knows she’ll have her work cut out for her Feb. 21.

That’s the day the retired school teacher joins 400 others in the fight for clean air by walking up the stairs of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel, one of Vancouver’s tallest buildings.

If this “48-flight fight for lung health” is not enough of a challenge, the BC Lung Association has introduced a new “Fight & Flight Challenge,”

an obstacle course designed to test participants’ strength, stamina and lungs, culminating with 48 storeys (739 steps) of intense stair climbing.

The 61-year-old Novy recently retired after teaching for 25 years at Whonnock Elementary, but that hasn’t slowed her down.

Give or take the odd year when she missed the event because of the flu, the long-time supporter of the BC Lung Association has been involved with Climb the Wall: The Stairclimb for Clean Air since its inception, 15 years ago.

“That boy can run,” Novy said. “I’m hoping he’s going to win it.”

As for her own aspirations, Novy said, “I know what’s waiting for me; that I know. My goal is always to walk-run but generally at the end I just have to walk. It’s just too hard. But there are kids out there who run the whole thing and they do it in under five minutes.”

Novy’s goal every year is to complete the climb in roughly 10 minutes.
