Former CFL commissioner shares his values of leadership Mark Cohon recently visits Red Deer to address agriculture industry KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS

M

ark Cohon, best known for his transformation of the Canadian Football League (CFL) as commissioner, stopped in Red Deer recently to speak with agriculture industry stakeholders on leadership and passion in business.

“I really wanted to drive home my family experiences because I know the (agriculture) industry is very much family driven. The industry is also difficult because of the demands of customers and I think people need to know what they do is important,” Cohon said.

“That kind of drives you through on those bad days - I had many bad days in the CFL, but I also realized that what I was doing was important.”

Appointed as commissioner of the CFL in 2007, Cohon revolutionized the marketing technique and relationship of the league with its fans, reviving the industry in Canada. He stepped down from his position in January 2015 to pursue new challenges in his career, which include working with the World Wildlife Fund.

Most recently, Cohon was also appointed chairman of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), the committee in charge of the annual Juno Awards for the Canadian music industry.

His father is the founder of McDonald’s Canada and Russia, and Cohon chose to share some of his experiences in his own business endeavours, as well as lessons learned from his father.

“I ran an institution that means a lot to the country and when you think about the grower and growing industry, I don’t think people appreciate enough what farmers and growers mean to this country. I think there needs to be a bigger dialogue around it,” Cohon said.

He explained in his presentation that although he had not worked as a grower, farmer or retailer in agriculture, he felt his experiences in leadership roles and lessons learned would be valuable to the audience.

“We all have to serve customers.

Whether you are a grower trying to sell to retailers or distributors, or if you are a retailer like Loblaws or Sobeys, you all have to serve customers and create a strong and trusting relationship with that customer,” he said.

“In the CFL, it was about engaging the fans and bringing them closer to the CFL. I learned the value of strengthening relationships at a very young age from my dad.”

He shared anecdotes of watching his father engage the customers of McDonald’s restaurants and developing relationships with staff members. Cohon said these

“I really learned a lot from my father in terms of engaging customers, working with employees and creating an authentic connection in your business,” he said.

Throughout his address, Cohon returned to his theme of three business pillars - pride and passion, creating strong relationships with customers and consumers, and demonstrating leadership.

He said these are all necessary assets in any industry, from agriculture to sport to music.

He explained simple gestures can go a long way in business development and strengthening an industry. As an example, he shared a story of how he personally called CFL fans - many of who didn’t believe it was the real CFL commissioner calling - and thanked them each personally for their dedication to the league.

Cohon learned these gestures from his father, who would often personally engage with his McDonald’s customers and ask them questions about their service, opinion and suggestions. Cohon even

used this lesson to invite fans of the CFL to suggest rules to be changed, and eventually changed four rules in the league according to recommendations.

“SET A VISION FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION, FOR YOUR TEAM OR YOUR BUSINESS - EVEN IF IT’S A SMALL ORGANIZATION OR FAMILY BUSINESS. SET GOALS FOR WHO YOU WANT TO BE AND GET EVERYONE TO BUY INTO THAT VISION.” MARK COHON He said opportunities like these are what helps any industry grow stronger, and what creates a relationship between producers and consumers.

“I think you have to engage the retailer. At the end of the day, it is in a retail

environment where a consumer really interacts with the product that people are growing. I think the retailer has to be part of that dialogue,” he advised the crowd.

“I’m on the board of the World Wildlife Fund and some of our dialogue is on things like sustainable fisheries. We talk about how Canadians want locally sourced product, farm-to-table restaurants - these sorts of things. The role that growers and farmers play in that is interesting for me to talk about.”

Towards the end of his presentation, Cohon stressed the importance of leadership in any industry. He said growing and food production is a valuable industry and that he hopes more people recognize the importance of the industry impact on their day-to-day lives.

“Set a vision for your organization, for your team or your business - even if it’s a small organization or family business. Set goals for who you want to be and get everyone to buy into that vision,” he urged.

The Alberta Court of Appeal has ruled that Rodney Arens will get a new trial.

Justice Kirk Sisson sentenced Arens to five years and six months in prison in June 2014. He was given credit for 185 days for time served before and during the trial. His sentence also included a driving prohibition for 10 years.

Arens was found guilty of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and breach of recognizance.

Those convictions was overturned last week in the Alberta Court of Appeal after initially being heard last September.

Justice Ronald Berger, Justice Peter Martin and Justice Barbara Lea Veldhuis delivered their decision last Friday.

Berger and Veldhuis both ruled Arens’ conviction be overturned and that a new trial be ordered, while Martin ruled the appeal be dismissed.

According to court documents reason for grounds of appeal included there was insufficient evidence to support a guilty impairment charge. Other reasons included that Sisson misapprehended and misapplied the law on proof of impairment and that Aren’s Charter rights were violated. A final reason was because of Sisson’s reversal of his voir dire ruling on the basis there was reasonable and probable ground for arrest.

Prior to trial, Arens filed a notice that his section eight and nine Charter rights had been violated by the RCMP when he was

arrested, asked to give breath samples, and then taken to the detachment to be held overnight.

A voir dire (which is a trial held within a trial to determine if evidence is admissible) was held to determine if Aren’s Charter rights were breached and whether the evidence obtained as a result of the alleged breaches should be admitted. The evidence consisted of the observations by officers made after Arens was arrested and video recordings of him at the station.

The crown conceded a section eight Charter violation in a letter dated May 8th, 2014, and conceded a section nine Charter violation during oral argument.

These concessions were made on the basis the arresting officer lacked reasonable and probable grounds to arrest the appellant and to make an evidentiary breath demand. There was a great deal of discussion between counsel and the court with respect to whether some evidence of alcohol consumption is required to form reasonable and probable grounds for an arrest for impaired driving.

Sisson ruled at trial that there was enough evidence to convict Arens without the Charter rights violation. Ultimately the Alberta Court of Appeal said Sisson used that inadmissible evidence to support his decision.

Meanwhile, the crown may appeal the decision to overturn Aren’s conviction and order a new trial to the Supreme Court. If they do decide to move forward with that appeal, they have 30 days to do so.

Arens will return to the Court of Queen’s Bench in Red Deer on March 7th.

Showing the love this Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is one of those days that people either love or loathe.

With the holiday coming up this weekend, flashes of pink and red are painted across the City, florists are likely going to be run off their feet, card shops will be packed with last minute shoppers, candy stores will be running on empty as the last boxes of chocolates are scooped up and reservations at restaurants for the big day will be booking up as well.

Yes, Valentine’s Day is a bit mushy and definitely not for the faint of heart – lovers will most likely have an extra bounce in their step this weekend, an extra sparkle in their eye and a smile on their face as Cupid strikes yet again.

Even the youngsters start getting involved in the celebration at quite an early age with the excitement of giving and receiving their own Valentines from classmates and friends and having small parties in their classrooms which usually include sweet treats as well.

This is where the seeds of love begin.

It’s a fact that Valentine’s Day has become much more commercial over the years – it is estimated that over one billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent out for the holiday annually. This makes it the second largest card-sending holiday of the year with Christmas taking the top spot.

Over 189 million roses are estimated to be purchased and thousands of chocolates will be consumed on this day as well. With all this commercial hype, it’s easy to get caught up in all of the hoopla, but we don’t think that should let lovers forget the real meaning.

This celebratory day is all in the name of St. Valentine. There are actually a few versions who St. Valentine was.

He has been described as a priest in Rome, a bishop of Interamna and a martyr in the Roman province of Africa.

Some believe Feb. 14th is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary St. Valentine’s death, which is thought to

have happened around 270 A.D. Others believe the Christian church may have celebrated St. Valentine’s feast in hopes of ‘Christianizing’ celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival.

The month of February in ancient Rome was the beginning of spring and was considered a time of purification. While not many people realize where Valentine’s Day originated, it is still celebrated, just in a different manner.

It is also interesting to note in the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression ‘to wear your heart on your sleeve’.

Although Valentine’s Day is pegged as the day of love, we don’t think lovers should only show their significant other how they feel one day a year – it should be every day.

Often, the single folks dread this ‘love-

filled’ day. It can be a reminder of their ‘singleness’ – something they’d rather not think about at all. Ladies can have their own celebrations – the so-called Galentine’s Day parties where women just have fun with their friends and put aside concerns over their singleness.

Singles can also celebrate Singes Awareness Day instead which also falls on Feb. 14th.

It can also be a day to get together with those you love as well whether it be a parent, grandparent, child or friend - it is definitely not limited to a significant other.

Don’t let the happiness of Valentine’s Day get you down. It doesn’t have to be just about falling in love. And regardless of your relationship status, one bonus to Valentine’s Day is that on Feb. 15th candy will be half priced!

This year, spend some time pondering new ways to find that special someone.

That way, next Valentine’s Day you may very well have some company.

There was a lot to admire about Stephen Harper The first cuts at a postmortem of the Stephen Harper years have taken the form of journalists’ biographies. Most deal with his years in office but some begin when Harper’s interest in politics first awakened. Nearly all are critical in the sense that the authors disapprove of Harper and all his works.

John Ibbitson is an exception. His biography begins earlier than the others and seeks to understand the person who led the country for nearly a decade. His book is critical in the sense of being analytical, not deprecatory.

Ibbitson admires Harper, not grudgingly, but for his ability to fulfill his agenda.

Harper succeeded in the sense that, “More people think like conservatives today” than did a decade ago. More Canadians ac-

COOPER cept lower taxes, reduced regulation, the division of powers that makes federalism real, and letting individuals get on with their lives.

Of this complex of policies, reducing the GST and cutting other taxes were the most important. By so doing, the Conservatives limited the ability of the government to intervene in the lives of citizens by reducing the bureaucrats’ life-blood - tax revenue.

Harper was a genuine federalist. Provinces take care of schools, hospitals

and roads; Ottawa defends the border, Canadian interests abroad, and runs the justice system. That meant respecting provincial constitutional responsibilities and ending the charade of federal-provincial conferences that obscures responsibilities and increases acrimony.

Harper also ended equalization by stealth, which disguised real transfers by hiding them in federal program spending such as EI or research grants.

Even Harper’s enemies must admit he brought an end to protracted constitutional disputes and grand schemes to unite a fractured country. “The country isn’t fractured,” Ibbitson said. Does anyone care about separatism today?

In foreign policy Harper’s critics say Canada is ‘gone’

from such places as the UN. Such critics despised Harper anyway, but it is a fair comment and it deserves a fair response Canada showed up on the front lines against genuine adversaries.

His greatest domestic defeat was the rejection by the Aboriginal leadership of his First Nations Education Act. It could have led to fundamental changes in the lives of Aboriginal children and enabled them to escape an environment that puts them at risk, often moral risk.

Though his opponents would never admit it, Ibbitson argues that Harper has altered our basic assumptions.

Harper’s views have become the new normal. In that respect, Ibbitson is too optimistic. The ease

with which the Liberals have returned to their orthodoxy without creating much opposition suggests that Harper’s aspirations for a better Canada remain unfulfilled.

Ibbitson’s major insight builds on an earlier study he undertook with Darrell Bricker on the attitudes of Laurentian Canada, especially towards the west.

He connected Laurentian attitudes to Harper’s experience when he enrolled at Trinity College, a residential college at the University of Toronto and a Kindergarten for male Laurentian elites. The inmates excluded the suburban introvert and in response he rejected them.

The result for young Steve was ambivalence towards academics and a deep suspicion of the unearned sophistication

and sheer presumption the Laurentians. He left Toronto for an entry-level job in Edmonton and started over.

In Alberta, Harper realized that the Laurentians had ruled in the interests of Laurentians. If they detested him in power (to use no stronger a verb), it didn’t matter. Such indifference to their criticism may have infuriated the Laurentians, which must have brought him some satisfaction. But fundamentally, Harper really didn’t care.

Had he flattered them perhaps he would have retained office.

Unfortunately, he was not Machiavellian enough.

The love story of David Thompson and Charlotte Small Another Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching.

It is a time to reflect on stories of romance that last despite challenges. A great example can be found in one of the oldest stories of western Canada, the marriage and decades-long life partnership of David Thompson and Charlotte Small.

David Thompson was born in London, England on April 30th, 1770. His father died when David was only two, leaving the family in destitution. However, when he was seven, Thompson’s mother was able to enroll him in the Grey Coat Hospital charity school.

Consequently, he was able to acquire an education in algebra, trigonometry and ‘practical’ astronomy.

In 1784, he was recruited by the Hudson’s Bay Company as an apprentice to the fur trade in the vast Rupert’s Land of Western and Northern Canada.

Life in the wilderness was hard and dangerous.

In 1788, Thompson badly broke his leg. He nearly died from his injuries and took months to recover. Ever afterwards, he walked with a noticeable limp.

However, Thompson was then given an opportunity to

While Thompson proved to be a talented student, he also lost much of his sight in one eye, probably as a result of viewing the sun without proper eye protection. Despite this new disability, Thompson was soon busy as an explorer, surveyor and fur trader. He also became more entrepreneurial. In 1797, he left the Hudson’s Bay Company to join the more free-wheeling and adventuresome North West Company.

In 1799, at Ile-a-la-Crosse, Thompson made another major life decision.

He married Charlotte Small, the daughter of a famous North West Company partner, Patrick Small, and his Cree wife, whose name has been regrettably lost in the mists of time. David was 28, while Charlotte was only 13 years old.

es at the time were what was known as ‘country wives’. There was no religious formalization of the relationship. Women were often picked for their ability to cook, sew and support their husbands with all kinds of domestic tasks.

When the men retired from the fur trade, they almost always abandoned their country wives and children.

That was certainly the case with Patrick Small, who deserted his wife and at least three children. It was also the case with John MacDonald of

Garth, who abandoned his country wife, Nancy Small (Charlotte’s sister) and five children. He later ‘formally’ married an heiress, Amelia McGillis, in Ontario and had six more children.

However, that is not what happened with David and Charlotte. They became not only husband and wife, but true partners for 58 years.

Thompson once wrote, “My lovely wife is of the blood of these (Cree) people, speaking their language and well educated in the English language, which gives me

great advantage,” in life and the fur trade.

Charlotte was describe as short, wiry and very tough.

She was a talented trader and hunter. She travelled across tens of thousands of kilometres of wilderness with her husband, while at the same time taking care of the five children they had while in the west. She lovingly nursed her David through serious accidents and illnesses.

When Thompson retired to Eastern Canada, one of the first things he arranged was

a proper church marriage to Charlotte. The couple were to have eight more children.

Tragically, the retirement years were brutal years for David and Charlotte. They fell into poor health and financial destitution. They also faced the heart-aches of the death of a number of their children.

Finally, David passed away on Feb. 10th, 1857 at Longueil, Quebec. Charlotte passed away on May 4th, 1857. The couple are buried beside each other in the Montreal’s Mount Royal Cemetery.

City moves forward on new affordable housing model

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS This three-part series will examine the complexities of the current affordable housing shortage in Red Deer that has the potential to be an emerging crisis if it is not addressed.

Improving accessibility for users and helping to streamline funding are just some of the goals the City is hoping to reach in terms of homelessness and affordable housing by moving to a new framework.

In the spring of 2014 the Red Deer & District Community Foundation released a report entitled ‘Red Deer Housing Framework Options’.

“The report was prompted after community stakeholders recognized that we have an affordable housing shortage in Red Deer currently, but they also looked ahead to the future realizing there are some factors which are coming into play both now and more so in the future which will exacerbate that affordable housing shortage,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“We needed to find a collaborative way to work together as a community - not only to resolve some of the challenges in the current system, but to actually develop a model that would not only position Red Deer for today, but would position Red Deer for the future on the social front.”

She added this report does that and the City is moving towards adopting that model.

“There are aspects in the current model that resolved the issue of the day. The way we have navigated through affordable housing in the community is we have had an ad hoc, piece-meal approach to it, which responded to a need of the day which is positive. But our population has grown substantially. Red

Deer has become positioned as a regional service hub for Central Alberta, and there have been other economic factors and provincial policy which has played into the challenges that we have with our existing affordable housing shortage,” said Veer.

“THE SINGLE GREATEST RISK TO STAYING THE SAME IS THAT THE EXISTING AFFORDABLE HOUSING STOCK SHORTAGE THAT WE KNOW TODAY WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY MAGNIFIED IN THE COMING YEARS.” TARA VEER “We are also at that watershed moment of a small city becoming a larger city. We need to modernize the way we are delivering services - not only to address the existing shortage but also to position us in the future.”

For example, in the current model, it shows that one of the challenges the community is faced with is there is an existing shortage of available affordable housing units.

“The other challenge in our system right now is that from a user perspective, it is often difficult for individuals and families in need of affordable housing to navigate through what can be a very complex system,” said Veer. “As much as there is a shortage, it’s often hard for them to know who to go to in order to ensure they have adequate and safe housing that is appro-

priate for their life circumstances.”

Veer added the current model also does not allow how capital grants are allocated and who is accountable for them.

She added with the current model there is a lack of clear governance, responsibility and decision making authority with respect to affordable housing and accountability in terms of addressing the shortfall of affordable housing stock.

Veer said there is also a lack of planning for financial sustainability for affordable housing stock, accountability for addressing the shortfall and transparency and accountability of responding to emerging issues.

“The single greatest risk to staying the same is that the existing affordable housing stock shortage that we know today will be significantly magnified in the coming years.”

Earlier this year, the City announced a new Systems Framework for Housing and Supports system. The report outlines an improved system to better coordinate local services and serve individuals experiencing homelessness.

The review of the current housing and supports system included a look at current programs and gaps, housing infrastructure, funding mandates, data analysis, as well as consultation with agencies and clients.

The new system will include a single entry point for housing programs and an emphasis on matching the right person with the right program.

“This is very much taking a step forward with respect in aspiring to the bigger picture,” said Veer.

In addition, Veer added another risk to the already affordable housing shortage are the number of public housing units that are on a capital retention policy. This means that when the capital retention policy expires on those developments, they could be turned into private housing stock.

The community saw that happen in 2007 with Monarch Place.

Originally built as affordable housing and owned by Innovative Housing Society, after a period of time units in the Kentwood complex were sold as private condos and many residents were forced to move out of the building.

Meanwhile, Veer added the City has been working in strong partnership with local stakeholders to put the new model in place.

A fundraising campaign for the Asooahum Crossing cultural centre kicks off this week with the Family Day Friday Dance on Feb. 12th.

The event takes place at Festival Hall at 7 p.m. and will feature a variety of Metis entertainment, as well as dancing with the Country Pride Dance Club.

There will be live country music and Metis fiddling

by Trent Agecoutay and the Uncle Brothers.

As well, guests have the chance to learn a Metis jig and enjoy many homemade refreshments. There are also silent auction items available. Tickets are $20 per family, $10 per adult, $5 for youth and children under three get free entry.

Tickets are available at the door, Peavey Mart or the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre (RDNFS).

“It’s going to be a wonderful fundraiser,” said Tanya Schur, director of the RDNFS. “We are fundraising for the building of the culture centre, which we hope to start next year. That building will include a community centre, support services, the Aboriginal Youth Centre for Success and spaces for little ones to learn about culture.

“We have received funding for the housing portion, but need to raise funds for the cultural centre portion. The culture centre is designed to be a place for the entire community, not exclusively Aboriginal people. It will have meeting spaces, boardrooms and family events will be able to happen there as well,” Schur added.

The dance is a first of many fundraising events that will help to promote awareness of and gather funds for the cultural centre. Asooahum Crossing construction started in the fall of 2015, with foundations being laid for the first portion of the process.

“I was just at the land recently, and it’s amazing to see the foundations being poured for the first 16 units of housing,” Schur said.

“We hope that’s going to be finished by mid-fall, so that we can have families in by Christmas. That’s very exciting. After that, we will continue with another 16 units of housing, starting next year and then the cultural centre will be built.”

CMHA Art of Friendship Course - the Art of Friendship is an eight-week course designed to help people who feel lonely or isolated learn and practice the skills that help people make and keep friends. The March course meets weekly beginning March 16th from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and runs through June 16th. The course takes place at the Canadian Mental Health Association office at 5017 5oth Ave. Art of Friendship is particularly helpful to people who have lost friends because difficult experiences or disability have affected their confidence level and self-esteem.

Local student lands Loran Awards nomination

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS A local student has been nominated to receive a national scholarship worth more that $100,000.

Dave MacTaggart of École Secondaire Notre Dame High School is among the finalists for this year’s Loran Awards.

“I’m the youngest of three kids, so my sisters had applied for it as well when they were in high school. So (applying) was just kind of a natural thing,” said MacTaggart, who earlier this month became one of the top 80 candidates out of 4,200 applicants for the award, which includes a $9,000 annual stipend as well as a matching tuition waiver, which, according to a press release from the Loran Scholars Foundation, is unique in Canada. This year there are 30 Loran Awards available and winners are selected, “On the basis of character, service, and leadership potential.”

The selection process for the awards, MacTaggart said, is rigorous and involves many different essays and interviews.

“The school was able to nominate three

people, so I was one of them, and then through that you submitted an online application that included approximately five essays and a bunch of other small writing excerpts,” he said, adding he then had to go through a round of regional interviews at the beginning of December.

Now in his Grade 12 year, the Lacombe native is the student body president at Notre Dame, an eight year member of the Central Alberta 4-H Beef Club, and has won awards at the provincial and national levels for public speaking.

He raises cattle at his family’s home in Lacombe and has a passion for agriculture that has driven his decision to attend the University of Saskatchewan for Crop Sciences.

He’s also very involved with athletics and has competed in bike races, runs cross-country and served as the captain of the Notre Dame junior varsity volleyball team last year.

When asked how he manages to balance all of his extra curricular activities, MacTaggart said the secret lies in identifying one’s priorities.

“At certain times you have to realize that certain activities are going to be more rigorous and require more time than others, so you have to be willing to give and take with each activity at certain points,” he said.

As an example, MacTaggart used the school’s exam break.

“In my life right now I’m not spending as much time with student council or with my cattle at home. I’m really concentrating on my studies. But there just has to be that understanding that at certain points you won’t be able to get all of your work done in every single category you’re involved in.

You just have to have that give and take and you just have to know that you’ll catch up with it as long as you’re disciplined.”

For MacTaggart, winning the scholarship would be an opportunity to grow as a member of society.

“It’s not the deciding factor of whether I’ll be able to go to post-secondary, but it will open a lot of doors for me in that regard.

Also there’s summer programs involved with the Loran Scholarship, so you get to become a much more globally-minded citizen,” he said.

“You can really learn people’s perspectives not only from around the world but also in Canada, as well, because you get to meet all of the different people who are involved in it. I think that would be very important for building me as who I am.”

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Having been dubbed Canada’s ‘hardest working band’, The Trews are gearing up for a sumptuous acoustic set at the Memorial Centre on Feb. 14th.

The guys will be showcasing their ‘quieter’ side with ‘The Trews 2016 Acoustic Tour’. To coincide with these dates, the band has remastered their 2009 live acoustic CD Friends & Total Strangers to include four previously unreleased tracks.

In addition, World Vision Artist Collective will participate by helping to bring recognition to the Wamama Simama Project – a World Vision campaign focused on garnering awareness to women’s and girls’ rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Fans will have the opportunity to connect with World Vision on The Trews tour and learn more about sponsoring a child.

The guys are thrilled to be teaming up with World Vision explained lead vocalist Colin MacDonald during an interview from Boston. “It’s a great way to spread the word,” he said. As for the tour, he said years back the band decided to do the sets of acoustic dates as a regular kind of thing - generally at the end of touring for a previous record and prior to delving heavily into writing sessions for the next project.

“It’s a fun way to shake things up,” he said, adding it’s also something of a stripped-down approach to their tunes which the fans really seem to enjoy. “It’s also a way to show the fans that we do have some depth and range,” he added with a laugh.

Indeed. The Trews offer up some of their finest, most compelling moments in an acoustic setting as is so clearly reflected on 2009’s Friends & Total Strangers which featured old cuts, rarities and new tunes captured in glorious and authentic acoustic simplicity.

The project was an acoustic session recorded over two nights at Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio in January of that year for a live audience. MacDonald mentioned that playing acoustic shows was something that commonly happened in the band’s earlier days, and was always something the boys enjoyed doing.

Meanwhile, everything that’s so solid about The Trews shined through on that project in even bolder ways from the raw, infectious blend of guitars to the never-once-diminished power of MacDonald’s voice. Being mixed in just

Judging by the results, there didn’t need to be.

Since then, the acoustic approach, as mentioned, continues to attract new fans as well. The guys also make sure that every time they head out on an acoustic tour, there is lots of new stuff for fans to enjoy as well - it’s not simply drawn from past ‘live’ recordings.

As for the relationship with World Vision, the band sees it as a vital way to help make a profound difference in the lives of so many. World Vision’s work in the Democratic Republic of Congo includes rehabilitation for child soldiers and female victims of sexual violence as well.

There is no question that The Trews has been one of Canada’s most successful rock bands of the past decade.

The group’s powerful artistry has been honed over the years of working together with the original lineup. They formed as One I’d Trouser in 1997 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia when they were still in high school.

The guys then moved to the Niagara region of Ontario and the band’s new moniker was Trouser. In 2002, they signed with Bumstead Records and were about to release a second EP, when it was insisted their name be changed.

The Trews were born.

In 2003, they released House of Ill Fame which yielded hits like Not Ready To Go and Tired of Waiting. Moving next to Toronto, their follow-up project Den of Thieves hit shelves in 2005.

In April 2014 the band released its fifth full-length studio album eponymously titled The Trews. It was the band’s highest charting debut to date reaching num-

As for MacDonald, a passion for music was something that was simply an intrinsic part of family life. “My dad had a band when we were growing up,” he recalls.

“He always had a big love for music, and my grandmother was also a tremendous piano player as well.

“Dad definitely encouraged us to work really hard at it,” he said, adding it was that kind of steady influence that helped point them in the best direction.

These days, MacDonald describes music as having a unique power to help him deal with the more challenging parts of life. “Music always pulls me out of those times - I’m very committed to it.”

RDC students shine in Shakespeare play

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Over the years, Red Deer College Theatre Studies students have consistently done an admirable job with interpreting the various works of William Shakespeare.

This winter is no different with their presentation of The Tempest, with shows continuing through to Feb. 13th on the Arts Centre’s mainstage. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. There is also a weekend matinee Feb. 13th at 1 p.m.

Directed by Thomas Usher, The Tempest is considered one of Shakespeare’s greatest works.

Cast away on an enchanted isle, the once powerful Prospero struggles to raise his daughter Miranda in this new world.

Together with the mythical inhabitants of the island, he uses the magic he has studied to raise a storm and wreak havoc upon his oppressors. The play opens as Prospero, having divined that his sister Antonia is on a nearby ship, has stirred up a tempest that causes the passengers to believe they are shipwrecked.

Also on the ship are Antonia’s friend and fellow conspirator, King Alonso of Naples, Alonso’s son (Ferdinand) and Alonso’s counselor Gonzolo.

From the start, audiences are drawn into the heart of the story via a wonderfully atmospheric set by Carrie Hamilton, a haunting soundscape produced by Luke Ertman and an effective light design created by Patrick Beagan.

Of course, Shakespearean language isn’t the easiest thing in the world to understand but thanks to some outstanding performances, and the lively, engaging interaction amongst the characters, the story’s plot and meaning does begin to come together.

Layne Zazalak turns in an excellent performance as Prospero, the focus of the story. As mentioned, Prospero has been stuck on an island for a dozen years with his daughter Miranda (Meegan Sweet), but has come to wield power - and oppression - on the island’s inhabitants over time. Thus the ‘usurped’ has essentially become the ‘usurper’.

After all, he was the rightful Duke of Milan. But Antonia (aided by Alonso), got rid of him by setting him adrift with his daughter Miranda.

Prospero also comes to be served by a spirit called Yaahl Jaad (Raven Woman) who is played by Ashley Mercia who captures the jittery movements and mannerisms of a ‘raven’ so well. It’s a challenging role, but she nails it via her expression and energy.

Derek Olinek also plays Gonzolo and provides some of the play’s most dramatic moments as well.

performances of the play. From the demanding physicality of the play to his raw, uninhibited performance on virtually every level, Luck is a constant scene-stealer and entertaining to watch, even though Caliban is a tormented individual.

Several plots alternate through the play.

Ferdinand (Logan Shave) and Miranda (Sweet) almost immediately take a shine to each other under the wary eye of Prospero. These two provide a convincing, innocent love story and are a delight to watch - I would also say of the entire cast, they are the strongest in physically speaking their lines - there is absolute clarity there, which

strengthens their performances and makes it that much easier for audiences to understand the evolution of their relationship.

Ultimately, Prospero, all his enemies in his power, has a decision to make about both his and their destinies.

Who else but Shakespeare can be constantly reinterpreted and enjoyed by modern audiences? He had such insight into human nature, and the issues that surface in our own lives. And with strong performances, an enchanting set and solid direction by Usher, you really can’t go wrong.

Red Deer Players on the mark with Mass Appeal

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS The Red Deer Players have served up another theatrical powerhouse with Mass Appeal, currently being staged at the Scott Block theatre downtown.

Featuring the exceptionally talented duo of Paul Boultbee and Jason Steele, performances run through to Feb. 20th with curtain at 8 pm. There is also a matinee set for Feb. 14th at 2 p.m.

The show, which was written by Bill C. Davis, is being directed by Lori Lane who was also at the helm of last year’s terrific rendition of Twelve Angry Men - also presented by the Red Deer Players.

Mass Appeal deals with the relationship between Father Tim Farley, an experienced parish priest and a young seminarian by the name of Mark Dolson, who relentlessly tries to rock the boat, challenging an overly comfortable congregation, and chip away at what he sees as obstacles to true growth and progression in the modern church.

Farley has, however, come to greatly

value his status in the parish and ultimately, he knows how to handle the folks to keep them satisfied via a comparatively middle of the road approach.

Immediately, when the men are put together in a mentoring relationship, there is a stark and constant friction between the two as they meet on a weekly basis. But there is also an almost immediate connection between the men - a ‘bond’ even.

Boultbee shines as Father Tim - I cannot imagine a better choice for the part - he captures the nuances of Farley’s character beautifully - from deep sincerity to a razor sharp wit to raw emotional complexity.

Boultbee can simply be counted on to bring his best to every performance he commits to; he’s a mesmerizing dramatic force onstage.

Steele is also terrific as Dolson, a character who is so absolutely honest and relatively transparent that it’s jarring to those around him. Steele is a gifted actor, able to nail just the right amount of cynicism without pushing it too far; and in a blink gone is the fierce attitude and brashness and in

its place is a warm-hearted sincerity and vulnerability.

Much credit also has to go to Lane - I don’t know exactly how she does it, but again, like with Twelve Angry Men, she has drawn out the finest in her cast and melded a tremendous balance of humour and poignancy. The wonderfully written play moves along briskly but it isn’t rushed - there is ample time to savour all that it offers on a number of levels.

Lane had pointed out that the heart of the play is really about relationship - where one is the teacher, or helper or source of guidance and the other is primarily the learner.

Of course, the tables are often turned - as we indeed see glimmers of with Farley. In the most important ways he finds his way back ‘home’. But the path along the way is fascinating to behold. It’s also an inspirational journey - from the story’s start to finish.

Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser to take place

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS On Feb. 20th, Loaves and Fishes will join hundreds of organizations across the country in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraising event.

This will be the second year Loaves and Fishes invites members of the community to walk or jog a 2km, 5km or 10km run in the name of raising awareness of homelessness and poverty in the area. Fundraising coordinator Claudine Fleury has been working hard to connect the public and invite participants to the event.

“I wasn’t here last year, but I’ve spoken with the staff and with our executive director and was told they had a fantastic time,” Fleury said. “They raised funds but also really brought the community together on the topics of homelessness and poverty in Central Alberta. They raised

awareness and brought attention to the issue.”

She said it would be great to see agencies, businesses and organizations in the community participate in the event, given that so much of the work Loaves and Fishes does works is with other local agencies.

“Our staff do a really great job here of connecting people to resources and connecting to other agencies. There is a co-operation amongst agencies in Red Deer, so that we can accept and refer clients between other agencies. It would be great to see those organizations in the City participate in the CNOY event.”

The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser takes place nationally to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty. Last year, it contributed big dollars to Loaves and Fishes in order to help maintain the services provided to combat those issues.

Fleury said this year is just as import-

ant, if not more so, due to the current economic status of the region. With the recession and high unemployment rate, she said the services of Loaves and Fishes are under a great deal of stress.

“The recession and high unemployment rate is putting a great deal of strain on our services financially,” she said.

“We are fundraising more than ever and are writing sponsorship, grant and proposal requests. We’ve requested businesses and other agencies to participate in our fundraisers throughout the year.

We have been mostly a donations supported organization - very little money comes from government for our support and services.”

She added, “Donations and fundraising are crucial to our stability and our ability to be able to provide our services.”

At the time of the interview, CNOY had 15 teams registered and were seeking 10 more to meet their goal of 25 teams.

Fleury said each team would ideally have 10 people on it. She added the financial goal of the fundraising event is between $25,000 and $30,000.

“That goal is really what we would need to meet our budget and expense demands for the quarter. All of the profits from CNOY will definitely be directed towards maintaining our services through that time,” she said.

She added there are many roles people can take in participation, from volunteering to photography to food preparation and a welcoming committee. As well, she said they are seeking and encouraging corporate teams and sponsorships that would be greatly appreciated.

“A lot of people care about the issues of homelessness and poverty here in Central Alberta and they want to give back and contribute - this is a really fantastic way to give to that cause.”

Drunk driving gets more attention than FASD The figures are appalling. In the U.S. every year 40,000 children are born suffering with fetal alcoholic syndrome disease (FASD).

In Canada there are more than 300,000 children with this disease. The lifetime cost for each child is $5 million.

So in Canada the cost to taxpayers of caring for those with FASD is $600 billion, the size of the national debt. In the U.S. the figure is $6 trillion. How can this medical and social tragedy be solved?

Destroying your own body with alcohol is one thing. But destroying the mind of an unborn child is maternal madness. Today, FASD is the most common cause of preventable mental retardation in North America.

I’ve recently talked to several people who care for FASD children. They’re usually foster parents who find it difficult and frustrating to keep children afflicted with FASD under control. Sixty per cent of these unfortunate children end up in prison or a mental health facility.

FASD children start life with a bundle of physical and mental defects.

For instance, many suffer from hearing loss, abnormal hand-eye functions making it difficult to coordinate gait. Mentally they suffer from a short attention span, have poor judgment and lack the skill for mathematics and language.

So how does the problem begin? We know that FASD occurs in one-third to one-half of infants whose mother consumed six or more alcoholic drinks daily during pregnancy. A report from Harvard claims the risk decreases to 10% with three drinks daily.

Binge drinking can also cause this disaster.

A physiological difference sets the stage for FASD. Most women fail to realize that when they consume alcohol, the fetus also consumes it.

But there is a huge difference between alcohol in the mother’s body and that of the fetus. Pregnant women have a well-functioning mature liver that detoxifies alcohol in the blood. A developing fetus does not have this metabolic safeguard and alcohol crosses the placental barrier.

Consequently, the fetus is subjected to a higher concentration of alcohol for a longer period of time. This spells disaster for the

My contacts tell me that it is not unusual for women who drink to excess to have more than one child affected with FASD. Why this is allowed to happen boggles my mind and I hope it does the same to yours.

Currently no law states that women who repeatedly bear FASD children should be sterilized. It’s a injustice not only because of the huge lifetime expense, but because these unborn children surely have the right to be born with a healthy body and brain.

So what’s the solution? All social agencies agree prevention is the logical and cheapest one. So what do they propose to prevent these alcohol-sodden women from having more FASD children?

They believe women should be educated about the risks of alcohol during pregnancy.

This sounds good in theory, but I wish them luck. There’s no doubt many of these women suffer poverty, abuse and other problems. But at this stage of alcoholism, trying to convert to abstention is unrealistic.

The odds of winning are better at Las Vegas.

Not one of the social and medical reports I read suggested that repeat offenders should be automatically sterilized.

Already I hear critics crying out that these women have rights. But rights go along with responsibilities to others, especially to the unprotected fetus in the womb.

It’s ironic that we toss drunken drivers who kill innocent people into jail. Yet we allow an alcoholic woman to carry a pregnancy, deliver a brain injured child, spend millions on its care and then allow that same woman to repeat the process again and again.

Remember it’s not the government who is paying these bills, it’s you. This should make you mad because no one in authority, associated with such tragic pregnancies, has the intestinal courage to prevent them.

Annual bonspiels sweep into Red Deer

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It was a busy week of curling in Red Deer.

The 71st annual Red Deer Farmers’ and Farmerettes’ Bonspiels took over the Pidherney Curling Centre last week for some great curling action.

“We had a lot of fun. It’s always a good event for the farmers and the town guys to get together,” said Ross Harder, one of the organizers of the bonspiel, which ran from Tuesday to Saturday last week.

This year’s triple elimination tournament featured 48 teams in the men’s bracket and 16 in the women’s. About 250 curlers took to the ice over the five days.

“It’s a full house,” Harder said.

“I think it may be one of the best ones yet. I think fun was had by all,” said Dan Belich, the chair of the bonspiel’s organizing committee.

Belich said the bonspiel has become an opportunity for Red Deer’s farming community to get together and have some fun.

“You know it’s not really about the curling down there. Overall I would say there’s some darn good curling and some darn poor curling that goes on down there but the social part of it is probably the biggest part of the event,” he said, adding that social aspect is one of the biggest draws of the tournament.

“Over the years it’s kind of turned into a traditional event. A lot of people, that’s the only time they see each other all year is at that event,” Belich said, adding there is also an evening meal every night of the event, as well as a windup banquet on Saturday night.

While the social aspect of the bonspiel takes centre stage for many, the curling was pretty competitive last week.

On the men’s side, Scott Cruickshank’s rink came away with the win in the A event while Fred Knight, Wilf Edgar, Larry Marshall, and Mike Sulzle won the B, C, D and E awards respectively.

In the Farmerettes’ Bonspiel, Patti Gardiner took home the A event crown with a 7-6 win over Margie Tyrkalo on Saturday morning while Lori Visscher, Dorothy Dixon and Laurie Duncan won the B, C, and D titles.

“We played a bunch of good, solid teams.

We were pretty fortunate, actually, to get a couple of those wins but things seemed to work for us. That’s the way the Farmers’

“We played really good in the final.

They had a couple of opportunities that would have changed the complexion of the game in a big way if they had made them but it’s just one of those games when things went our way.”

This is Cruickshank’s 10th year compet-

ing in the Red Deer Farmers’ Bonspiel and his team’s second time winning it. The first came two years ago.

“It feels just as good,” he said of this win when compared to his last one.

This year he was joined by his father Dave Cruickshank at second and his brother Kal Cruickshank at third and Roy McArthur of Georges Farm Centre as the crew’s city player.

Harder added he was happy with how everything turned out over the week.

With the playoffs just around the corner, the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs Midget AAA hockey team are right in the thick of things.

The Chiefs, who currently hold a 14-6-1-4 record in league play, have been among the toughest teams in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League this season. “(The season) started off pretty slow.

We didn’t get any wins in our first six or seven league games. But after that we turned it around,” said Head Coach Trevor Thomas about his team’s play this season.

The Chiefs currently sit in fourth place in the AMMFHL behind the Calgary Fire in third, the Sherwood Park Fury, who are in second place, and the Rocky Mountain Raiders in first. Just two points separate the Chiefs and the Fury in the standings.

“We’ve got seven league games left.

We figure that we probably have to play about .750 hockey to get a top three spot, which was our goal.”

In order to achieve that goal, the team will have to win at least five of their remaining seven games, including a crucial one against Sherwood Park on Feb. 19th.

“Basically it’s just kind of staying the course. We talked about the process and we talked about what good happens and when we do that, we seem to have success. We have a good skill base, we have a lot of returning players from the Esso Cup last year who have kind of gone through the war.”

Last weekend, that success continued for the Chiefs during the Fraser Valley Rush’s Invitational tournament in Langley, B.C. The team posted a 4-0-1 record through the first two days of the eight team tourney to earn themselves a spot in Sunday’s final game, during which they came away with a 1-0 win over the Okanagan Lakers to claim the gold medal.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, their success at the tournament wasn’t without a price, as they suffered a trio of major injuries over the course of the weekend.

“We went through the whole season

without any significant injuries and we lose probably one of our best forwards this weekend, which is going to put a damper on things. But we’ll have to pick each other up,” Thomas said.

He added the team’s main focus now is on the final seven games and the playoffs afterwards.

“We need to play better in our own end. That’s the first thing we talked about,” he said, adding the team also needs to work on generating more offense. We don’t score a lot of goals when we start getting cute. We have to get to the tough areas of the rink to score goals. When we do that, we have success. In terms of playoffs, we know it’s going to be tough to score.

We’re going to have to make sure we get to those areas.”

Thomas said while his team is not the strongest in the league offensively, they have still found ways to score.

All-Star festivities best in recent memory When the NHL announced the new three-on-three format for their All-Star Game, I have to admit I was fairly skeptical. In fact, I was downright against it.

It seemed to me the league had decided to make their annual showcase of talent the most gimmicky one in all of sports.

That is, until I watched the All-Star Game a couple weekends ago.

Now I have to admit that I was wrong.

The NHL All-Star weekend, which took place in Nashville this year, was a spectacle to behold. From the Skills Competition to the All-Star Game itself, last weekend’s festivities turned out be the absolute best in recent memory.

I’ll admit that the only reason I was watching this year’s game was the inclusion of enforcer John Scott, who was voted in as

the captain of the Pacific Division team by fans late last year. At that point the 6’8”, 260lb journeyman was a fourth-line player for the Arizona Coyotes.

To say there was drama surrounding Scott’s selection would be a huge understatement. Describing the crazy chain of events that took place between Scott’s selection and the All Star Game itself would take more space than I have, so I won’t.

Instead, let’s just say there was about a week when it looked like Scott was going to be blocked out of the game

by the league and when he took to the ice for Saturday’s Skills Competition he wasn’t wearing a Arizona Coyotes’ jersey. That all leads up to one of the many great moments that took place that weekend, the moment when Scott went to take his first shot during the hardest shot competition.

When he skated out to the blue line to make his first attempt, he received a resounding standing ovation from the fans and all of the players on the ice.

Remember, this is a guy who figured he would never get to play in an All Star Game. A guy who has scored just six goals in his entire NHL career, not necessarily because he wasn’t capable of scoring but because he knew he had a role to fill.

Then there was the tournament, which took place on the Sunday afternoon.

A pair of close conference matchups built up to a 1-0 classic between the Pacific and Atlantic divisions in the final.

To make matters even better, Scott scored two goals including the Pacific Division’s first goal of the tournament.

That all leads up to my favourite moment of the weekend - the MVP presentations.

After all of the adversity and trouble he went through just to get here, there was only one person who deserved the MVP award.

Overall, it was a weekend that will live in hockey fans’ memories as one of the greatest All-Star Games of all time and I, for one, hope that next year’s game will be just as good.
