As citizens and governments around the world continue to go further into debt, questions arise about whether there is an alternative to the current banking system we have lived with all our lives.

Proponents of a virtual currency called Bitcoin say

it has the power to change the banking system as we know it, cutting out the middle-man and allowing individuals and businesses to be their own bank, eliminating fees and limiting traditional debt.

Could Bitcoin—or any other virtual currency— gather enough momentum to disrupt the banking system in the same way other technological developments have changed other industries? Or will the big

banks win the race to evolve and innovate?

Lake Country Calendar reporter Kevin Parnell found there are a lot of questions but few answers.

One thing is for sure, the race is on to give people more choice. Some observers say it’s only a matter of time before the financial system, as we know it, comes to a crashing end.

Banks face competition from virtual currency KEVIN PARNELL For the past 20 years, Derrick Nicholson has been working in currency markets, as a strategist and a trader.

He works with companies to purchase products around the world.

He moves money and he hedges, making investments as a way of insuring against future losses.

But the Kelowna man says the future of currency as we know it is changing, and everyday people stand to suffer the most.

“I think we’re heading for a currency crisis,” Nicholson said this week.

“Change is coming and I’ve looked at this for years. It’s not pretty but life is about change and hopefully some good comes of it.

“I think there is a massive transfer of wealth coming. I look at the markets today and there is so much volatility. I’ve been a trader for 20 years and I’ve never seen markets like this. It isn’t normal and the volatility is increasing.”

According to Nicholson, many of the problems he sees coming are directly related to the way governments around the world are in control of currency.

Historically, most currencies were based on physical commodities such as gold or silver.

However, those days are gone, replaced with what’s now called fiat money, currency that a government has declared to be legal tender but is not backed by a physical commodity.

“All currencies today are managed by governments and the movements that are made are

not always in the best economic interests,” said Nicholson.

“Currencies are constantly devalued by governments and central banks and what that means is inflation.

“As human beings, we think inflation is the natural order of things but it’s not. It’s a tax by government because the purchasing power of currencies is constantly devalued.

“You can buy less today with your currency than you could 10 years ago and that’s because governments are (creating) money out of thin air.”

But as governments around the world try to deal with economies that appear to be failing, there is a counter-movement underway that is providing an alternative currency.

In 2008, an invention known as Bitcoin first came to light. In 2009, it was released as an opensource, peer-to-peer computer software.

One of many different virtual currencies available today, Bitcoin has the largest market share and uses a technology called blockchain.

The blockchain is a public ledger that records Bitcoin transactions.

Thousands of computers work together to record every transaction using a mathematical algorithm, recalculating as many as 200,000 times in a single day.

Users are able to make transactions without the use of an intermediary or a banking system, and in a way, become a banking system without the banks.

One Bitcoin is currently valued at over $380 US and there are

well as a book called the Age of Cryptocurrency, an examination of how Bitcoin and digital money are challenging the global economic order. more and more companies accepting Bitcoin for services every day.

In Kelowna, businesses such as Rollingdale Winery, Duke and Duchess Clothing, Pawsitive Veterinarian Care, Hemp City and Kelowna Instaprint all accept Bitcoin.

“The positives I see with Bitcoin is it’s not controlled or owned by any government therefore it can’t be manipulated,” said Nicholson.

“It’s a step in the right direction. It’s probably not the final prod-

uct but it’s a move away from government manufactured currencies to a more free market way of trading which is how commerce should take place.”

••• Bitcoin as a virtual currency has had wild swings since it was first made available for public use. It has traded all over the map, from $11 US to its current status above $380 US for one Bitcoin.

If you want to buy or use Bitcoin in Kelowna it’s easy. On the corner of Bernard and Gor-

don, Steve Merrill sits in his office at Sovereign Silver & Gold Exchange and will convert Canadian money into Bitcoin using what looks like a traditional debit machine.

Lots of companies are in the Bitcoin business, with names like Coinkite and Coinbase. More are offering debit cards that use Bitcoin, with names like Xapo and e-Coin.

Kelowna was actually home to one of the first Bitcoin ATMs back in 2013 and there are reportedly now more than

500 ATMs worldwide.

That first ATM is gone from Kelowna, but Merrill has partnered with a Vancouver company called Netcoin— two brothers who have created a virtual ATM using a smartphone app.

“A customer can walk in and buy 100 dollars worth of Bitcoin,” said Netcoin founder and CEO Michael Vogel.

“We facilitate the heavy lifting to get that Bitcoin from us to the customer’s digital wallet where Bitcoins are stored. You can then open up your Bitcoin wallet on your phone.”

Despite the increase in businesses using Bitcoin, walk down the street and ask people if they know about Bitcoin and the responses will range from zero knowledge or others who have heard about it, to those who thought it was a passing fad that went away.

“It’s a common reaction we get from a lot of people we talk to: ‘I thought Bitcoin died,’” said Vogel. “But the reality is Bitcoin’s adoption rate is about six times faster than the early days of the Internet.

“We’re not that far removed from when the Internet was coming of age. Bitcoin is at the same kind of point in its lifecycle.

“It’s mostly early adopters and tech-savvy people who are interested in it today.”

Vogel said the technology is ramping up and becoming more in the mainstream, as evidenced by the investment now being made in blockchain technology by major financial institutions.

“The funny thing is, a year ago all the Amer-

ican banks didn’t want anything to do with Bitcoin, they thought it was ridiculous,” said Vogel.

“But since August every major American bank and about 30 major financial institutions have invested in or started their own blockchain.

Visa has started a pilot project in Europe to use an internal mechanism to move money around.

Microsoft, Dell, Expedia are now all actively accepting Bitcoin.”

At Sovereign Silver & Gold, Merrill says Bitcoin is a move away from the way things are done today as people heavily finance purchases using credit cards, lines of credit and mortgages, increasing debt and paying interest on their purchases.

At the same time, countries like Canada continue to go further into debt, borrowing money from the international banking system, creating money from bonds and continuing a cycle of debt that he said is out of control.

“All money today is debt,” he said. “If the money is always charging you rent to the point where the rent— the interest—exceeds the money supply, the system fails. Talk to the people in Greece or in Venezuela where their currency has collapsed.

“In the 1970s, the federal government had almost no debt. Now the interest on Canada’s debt is $50 billion annually.

“Historically this kind of financing and borrowing has never worked.”

Protesters fear peace in forests After 20 years of representing B.C. coastal First Nations to negotiate what U.S.-directed activists labeled the Great Bear Rainforest agreement, a weary Dallas Smith expressed his relief and frustration.

At a ceremony to sign the final agreement in Vancouver last week, Smith, president of the Nanwakolas Council of remote Central Coast communities like Bella Bella, joked that he’s finally out of a job. Then he got serious.

“My communities still aren’t better places to live yet,” he said. But the land use agreement with the province and forest companies over a vast coastal area up to the Alaska border means the years ahead will be better.

He said when he started it was like being caught in a divorce between the B.C. forest industry and international environmental groups.

Tom Fletcher others moved on from their Clayoquot Sound battle to the B.C. coast, looking to continue the blockades against logging.

“It’s the First Nations of the Coast who stood up and said ‘no, this is how it’s going to work’,” Smith said.

How it’s going to work is that logging will continue on 550,000 hectares of coastal forest, with a greater share for First Nations, and with 85 per cent of the region preserved after a century of logging that began with sailing ships.

hards who are either paid to protest or can’t get past issuing demands, B.C. aboriginal people have grown tired of being used as props in global de-marketing campaigns directed from San Francisco or Amsterdam. The protesters’ tactic of organizing customer boycotts that damage far-away economies might be good for international fundraising, but it’s bad for poor people.

Formally begun 10 years ago with $30 million from Ottawa, $30 million from B.C. and $60 million from a group of wealthy U.S. family foundations with a larger anti-development agenda, the land use plan remains under attack.

Among the many protest outfits is Pacific Wild, which has specialized in Great Bear Rainforest campaigns and now needs a new enemy. Their credibility was demonstrated recently when pottymouthed U.S. pop star

Miley Cyrus decided to speak out against B.C.’s wolf kill.

Typical of celebrities, Cyrus had no idea about the struggle to preserve dwindling herds of mountain caribou.

She barely knows where B.C. is, a fact made plain when Pacific Wild toured her around the North Coast, far from the Kootenay and South Peace regions where the wolves in question actually roam.

Cyrus’s handlers spoon-fed video and statements to urban media, who were so anxious to exploit her global popularity that they played down the fact she was at the wrong end of the province spouting nonsense.

After periodically attacking their own B.C. agreement as inadequate, Greenpeace and ForestEthics have moved on to what they call the “boreal forest,” which we like to call northern Canada. The same bully tactics with forest products

customers and producers have been featured.

This time, a Quebec company that signed an accord in 2010 is suing Greenpeace for “defamation, malicious falsehood and intentional interference in economic relations.”

Aboriginal companies on the B.C. coast will continue to log, including areas of old-growth forest and secondary growth. They will continue to export logs as economics dictate. They will continue to harvest animals, including grizzly bears.

And, I expect, they will continue to be subjected to attempts to supervise and direct them by members of urban society’s new religion, environmentalism.

The leaders of this movement don’t like peace. It’s bad for their business.

SAR needs long-term funding to operate

orth Okanagan residents have come to expect that members of Vernon Search and Rescue will drop everything during an emergency.

But imagine what would happen if the volunteer unit wasn’t there?

Who would spend hours looking for lost snowmobilers in the backcountry? Who would help look for a missing child or someone who

fell off a boat? Who would help the RCMP gather vital evidence during a case?

The same could be said of the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, based out of Kelowna.

The North Okanagan, like all communities across the province, benefit directly because of the civic-minded spirit of SAR volunteers.

But I doubt if it’s music.

Similarly, I doubt if a sculptor would risk ruining a block of marble by attacking it too vigorously with his chisel.

Yes, we can certainly speak and act while angry. And we often do.

But we often regret it later.

Because anger turns inward. It excludes other emotions. You can’t be loving and angry at the same time. You can’t be boiling and calm.

Years ago, I wrote about anger as one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Those sins all have a paradoxical element.

They’re also virtues—in the right place and time.

Anger, for example, leads to violence, impulsive behaviour, broken relationships. But without anger we would have no justice movements.

Anger motivated the civil rights and anti-war movements in the U.S.

It launched the American and French revolutions. It provided the impetus for Gandhi’s Salt Marches in India, for the opposition to apartheid in South Africa. Anger fuelled feminists and suffragettes.

Anger says—like Peter Finch’s famous rant in the movie Network—“I’m not gonna take it anymore!”

But first you have to bring that blaze under control.

For good reason, most meditation practices (possibly excluding self-hypnosis) focus on breathing. Breathing

is the most basic act of life. The Bible considered it the evidence of life. In both Greek and Hebrew, the word for “breath” also means “spirit.”

If we are alive, we breathe. But breathing is also likely our least conscious act. We weren’t conscious of our first breath; we probably won’t be of our last.

Most of the time, we’re not even aware of our breathing; we just do it.

Until something upsets us. Like a driver who lacks the common courtesy to come to the door and say, “sorry.”

As Stone pointed out, the SAR volunteers save all of us about $5 million a year. If we had to pay staff for search duties, it’s unlikely the service would exist. One-off funding is great but more needs to be done to ensure the long-term viability of our search and rescue teams.

Steele re-elected president of B.C. Fruit Growers Assoc.

BARRY GERDING Kelowna orchardist Fred Steele has been re-elected for another term as president of the B.C. Fruit Growers Association.

Steele, who was being challenged by North Okanagan fruit grower Jeet Dukhia, said he was relieved that the campaign was over.

“It starts about mid-November and con-

tinues until the convention vote. It’s about seven weeks of mayhem,” Steele said.

“You have to get organized, find out where your support is or might be, figure those things out before you decide whether or not to take a run at it.”

Steele said he expected a close election and that Dukhia ran a strong campaign.

“I think this is the

third time he and I have run against each other now. He ran a good, tough campaign and I respect that,” Steele said.

Looking forward, Steele says the fruit growing industry faces a more optimistic future in the short-term after many years of hard times for orchardists across the Okanagan Valley.

That optimism, he says, is a combination of many factors, starting with successful inroads being made for selling premium cherries and apples to South Asian markets.

He says finding financial support from provincial and federal government agencies for such things as replanting and crop insurance are an easier sell when the BCFGA is bringing an optimistic message to the table.

Steele said he was hesitant to call the Okanagan fruit growers completely unified, as there remains a streak of independence evident among many local growers.

“In some areas we are unified, and some areas we are not,” he said.

“But it’s important for the whole industry to come together and act as leaders.”

Steele said competition should always be welcomed among growers, but sometimes the industry needs to stand together to present a unified voice when advocating for support of the industry.

In his speech to the BFGA members gathered at the Ramada Hotel convention room in Kelowna on Saturday, Steele described the BCFGA president’s position as one that requires patience, vision, diplomacy and optimism.

“You have to pick your fights, know when to stick your feet in the mud and when to back off. You need to have good judgment,” he said.

“As an industry, we need to come together to find common interest solutions.”

Province boosts tech research funding at UBCO The provincial government will invest $6 million for the next generation of talent in tech research and business to support the recently announced #BCTECH strategy.

The not-for-profit organization Mitacs will use the funding to bring students together with industry and business, giving students the opportunity to do research on real-world projects in a range of sectors, including technology, health, business and engineering.

If successful, the resulting liner material will be used by industrial partners to develop a prototype helmet that may have the capacity to reduce the incidence of concussions.

Popular music from the 1940s through ’70s to celebrate Valentines Just in time for Valentine’s day, Canadian singer/pianist Rod Russell will be appearing at the Creekside Theatre in Lake Country on Feb. 13.

Contest for 50+ unpublished writers Building on the success of last year’s inaugural Cedric Literary Awards, B.C. writers of a certain age are once again being encouraged to submit their unpublished works of fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry to this year’s competition.

Cedrics executive director Veronica Osborn said, “Unpublished B.C. writers aged 50 and better can submit their work between Feb. 1 and May 1 when the call for submissions will close. If last year’s competition is anything to go by, we know this year’s competition will attract a high level of interest in this firstin-Canada writing pro-

gram.”

In its first year, The Cedric Literary Awards received 168 submissions, each vying for one of the $3,000 prizes awarded in four categories.

Cedrics founder Peter Dale said: “We are changing the landscape of literary awards programs in Canada by providing a unique platform to recognize and reward unpublished English and French-speaking authors of fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry, and First Nations writers, age 50 and better.”

Our Love Story begins in 1960 in Richmond,B.C. when I met the new boy next door. I was 13 and he was 15. Little did we know that we would become best friends for life. During the next 5 years we built a friendship, attended school together and shared each other’s graduations. During that time Martin pursued a drea m of working on a farm in Alberta and the handwritten love letters flowed between us for almost a year. In 1965 we were married and in 1967 we were blessed with our 1st of 3 children. In 1970 we moved to Winfield for employment. We have raised our three children here and still feel fortunate to call Winfield our home for 46 years. During our courting years one of our favorite dates was to take a drive out to the country in the Fraser Valley. To this day we love to pack a lunch and take a day trip taking photos. Mobile is changing everything because everything is happening on our phone and its disrupting every single industry.”

Crowell said major companies are now fully researching ways to radically innovate and change themselves by creating divisions that are tasked with thinking outside of the box, trying to find the innovation before they are disrupted by an outside company.

“To radically innovate, some of the really big companies actually create divisions within their own company and have them work on projects that are separate from what they do,” he said.

“To radically innovate, you need to be thinking so far outside of the box and sometimes in these large companies it’s very hard to change.”

Some of the big banks have taken on this philosophy.

Scotiabank announced in October what it called a “significant milestone” with the development of a Digital Factory designed to deliver digital innovations and solutions for the bank’s customers.

Permanent Part-time RCMP Exhibit Clerk The Protective Services Department is seeking a permanent part-time RCMP Exhibit Clerk to join their team. The RCMP Exhibit Clerk is responsible for the security and safekeeping of all property seized by or surrendered to the RCMP. As the Exhibit Clerk, you will be accountable to the Criminal Justice System and the RCMP with respect to maintaining evidentiary continuity. You will also responsible for the lawful disposal of seized articles. The normal work week is 21 hours, with a variable schedule.

This position will work both in the RCMP Office and in the field. Operation on a motor vehicle will be required with a valid Class 5 driver’s license. Must have a clear criminal record.

The preferred candidates will have completed a grade 12 diploma, WHMIS Certificate and training and knowledge in PRIME, PIRS, CPIC, Evidence Manager, and Canada Firearms Safety Course. A minimum of one year related experience in law enforcement. The hourly rate of pay for this unionized position is between $25.41/hr and $30.25/hr (2016 rates).

Permanent Full time Planner The Community Services Department is seeking a permanent full-time Planner to join their team. The Planner provides research, analytical, report writing, presentation services respecting policy development, land use planning projects, and land use applications.

This is a mid-level professional planning position in the Planning and Development section that requires a high degree of professional responsibility in the development and implementation of planning strategies, statutory documents, and municipal policy. The position also requires thorough knowledge of related Acts and Regulations and the planning process in British Columbia. The Planner primarily works independently and works collaboratively with District staff to make submissions to Council and other affected public and private agencies as well as working with committees and above named groups respecting land use in the community.

The preferred candidates will have completed a Planning Degree or Degree in a related discipline and membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of BC and/or the Canadian Institute of Planners. A minimum of three years’ related experience in planning, with preference taken to relevant experience in municipal government. The hourly rate of pay for this unionized position is between $31.60/hr and $37.62/hr (2016 rates).
