A weekend of fun for Family Day Hundreds of happy families packed Market Avenue for hours of fun during Family Day festivities in Grand Forks, Saturday February 6.

Market Avenue was closed off to vehicles and was lined with free fun carnival-style food and activities including a show with Nathan the Magician, a Fun Mudder obstacle-course competition, the Grand Forks Rotary Club’s infamous Kettle corn, a movie at Gem Theatre and a spin around City Park courtesy of the Grand Forks ATV Club.

There was also free skating on Sunday at the arena, free swimming at the pool, free skiing Monday at Phoenix, and the 5th annual Ice Fishing Derby and Snow Carving contest at Wilgress Lake all weekend.

1906 Over 50 interested spectators jammed the city hall as the council battled over the controversial liquor bylaw.

The bylaw fixed saloon license fees at $1,000.

The Pathfinder Mine, located 14 miles from the city and on the east side of the North Fork of the Kettle, was sold to the Granby Company.

1911 The Grand Forks Fruit and Nursery Co. installed an irrigation system at the foot of Hardy Mountain to use the water from Cedar Lake, a 200 acre body of water at an elevation of 3,200 feet.

J.C.Allen and J.C. Bugbee have leased the Shealds building, formerly occupied by the Royal Bank, to open up a cigar store and a pool house.

1916 Granby Company’s report for the six months ending in December showed a net profit of $1,513,000 or $8 per share.

1921 The assessment of the Granby property was reduced to $17,500 from $46,000 due to a closure. Judge Brown, C.A.S. Atwood and A.E. Hales were elected as a Board of Trustees responsible for acquisition of a building as a recreation hall for young men and women.

1926 Greenwood won the hockey championship by default. The Grand Forks team was unable to make the trip to Greenwood as the special train service was called off.

1931 Joe Szcezsnuk of Midway was fined

by Magistrate Charles Nichols for having a still in his possession. The B.C. liquor business dropped at the rate of $100,000 per month according to the balance sheets of the Liquor Board.

1936 A second fire in three months roared through Greenwood’s business section

causing some $15,000 damage.

Firemen fought the blaze in five-degree-belowzero weather and blizzard like winds. Six businesses were destroyed.

Daisy Malm, as a Spanish Cavalier, and Louis Santano, as a bullfighter, were winners in the costume carnival on ice sponsored by the Gyros.

1941 Grand Forks high school students scored another successful “Joy Night” celebration at the Davis Hall. Leo Mills was the master of ceremonies.

1946 Art Topp, recently discharged from the RCAF, has opened a taxi service in Grand Forks.

It was reported by the hospital committee that four thousand dollars was needed to purchase the hospital property.

1951 Pete Oleynk has purchased the Bowlerdrome Alleys from L. Dupas and the Royal Hotel from Emma Phillips.

1956 The government has set aside 416 acres on the east side of Christina Lake for a public parkland.

1961 Classes began in the new school building erected between the two older schools on the elementary grounds.

1966 Lois Haggen, MLA for Grand Forks - Greenwood, entered the legislature to find a vase of flowers on her desk and a Valentine’s card from the premier. Mrs. Haggen is the only female member of the legislature.

1971 Sandy Marshall, Elvera Traynor, Fern Smith and Effie Venables were winners of the “B” event in the Ladies Open Bonspiel held over the weekend.

Remembering Mocha

1976 It was learned at a city council meeting that building permits were issued this week to Wan-Ken Development of Rutland for some $200,000 worth of residential construction representing several new homes to be built in a new subdivision.

1981 City construction crews went back to work on the new city hall project after council unanimously gave fourth and final reading to a bylaw appropriating $150,000 from the Slag Sales Reserve Fund to complete the work.

1991 The number of spousal assaults reported to the Grand Forks RCMP detachment in 1990 showed a large increase over 1989.

The 1990 number of 33 is almost triple the previous year’s figure of 12, and so far this year, RCMP officers have responded to four such calls.

1996 A split Grand Forks city council voted Monday to grant the Boundary Museum $20,000 instead of the $15,000 originally allotted. Without the additional funds the museum would have to reduce its hours, which would make it ineligible for other grants.

2001 Two Grand Forks residents have been charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle about 30 pounds of marijuana into the United States. The suspects face charges of possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking and exporting an illegal narcotic. RCMP were alerted last Saturday around 6:30 p.m. by the Ferry County Sheriff’s department following suspicious activity along the U.S. border near Carson crossing.

2006 Monday night’s meeting of Grand Forks City Council marked the return of a television camera to the bi-weekly proceedings. Subscribers to Sunshine Cable will be able to take in the meetings from the comfort of their own homes.

More info needed for Senior’s housing project at the Lake CRAIG LINDSAY

A proposed senior’s housing facility for Christina Lake still has many hurdles to jump before seeing the light of day. A public hearing was held at the Christina Lake Community Hall on Jan. 18 regarding the application by the Christina Lake Seniors Housing Society to rezone a parcel of Crown land for the facility. Based on issues raised at the hearing, staff is recommending the board consider directing staff to hold a second public hearing.

Several of the comments against the proposed amendments raised concerns about what would happen to the land if it was rezoned and the senior housing did not proceed, as well as concerns over parking, access and riparian area protection.

Attending the meeting were Grace McGregor, RKDB director for Area C/ChristinaLake; Jeff Ginalias, senior planner, and Carly Rimell, planner for RDKB; other RDKB staff members; housing society members; and approximately 58 members of the public.

The hearing was for the proposed bylaw No. 1585 to amend Electoral Area C/Christina Lake’s Official Community Plan (OCP) bylaw No. 1250 and proposed bylaw No. 1586 to amend Electoral Area C/Christina Lake Zoning Bylaw No. 1300.

Ginalias summarized the proposed OCP amendment to designate the area, which is 1.076 Ha, as multiple family residential and create a multiple family residential and create a multiple family residential development permit area within the Electoral Area C/Christina Lake OCP bylaw No. 1250 and to rezone this area as multiple family dwelling zone in the Electoral Area C/ Christina Lake zoning bylaw No. 1300.

Ginalias also provided an overview of the Seniors Housing Society’s proposal which features a

single, two storey building with studio, one bedroom and two bedroom units. He also discussed the history of how they arrived at this proposal and the community outreach which had taken place prior to this bylaw amendment proposal.

He further clarified that adoption of the bylaw did not authorize development and that an appraisal, purchase of the land, survey of the land and development permit would still be required prior to development.

McGregor told the Gazette that they would have information before the next meeting. She said there have already been several public meetings already and there is still a great deal of misinformation being bantied about.

“People just don’t get their facts straight, they don’t read the information and they don’t come out and have the conversation,” said McGregor. “We’ve had many public meetings and we’ll have another to address the issues because we want to make sure people get the right information so they can be informed.”

McGregor said the zoning would need to be approved first before “crunching” any numbers and looking at costs and how the project would be paid for.

Tara Werner attended the meeting and is one of the Christina Lake residents who is opposed to having the seniors project go ahead at that location.

“It’s park land,” she said.

“They’re talking about putting it basically right where there is a trail head that takes you right down to a beaver dam that has beaver and otter activity. I use that park. I like to go down and watch the otters play.

There are eagles in there and deer.”

Werner is concerned that the development will also need space for parking as well. “It looks like the parking area could encroach where the trail head is. Right now any number of people can drive right • See SENIORS page 11

Busy year for fire departments CRAIG LINDSAY

It was a busy year in 2015 for both the Grand Forks Fire/Rescue (GFFR) and the Christina Lake Fire Rescue (CLFR) departments. Between helping with the wildfires surrounding the area, training, attending structure fires as well as other emergencies, the fire departments were indeed busy.

At the Jan. 25 regular meeting of Grand Forks council, fire chief Dale Heriot presented his report for both December of 2015 and the entire year. In December, GFRD responded to 56 calls in total (six fire, 12 rescue and 38 first responder).

For the year of 2015, the fire department responded to 615 total calls with 184 for fire, 61 rescue and 370 first responder. The report stated that the fire department was 30 per cent busier than in the previous busiest years (2013 and 2014). In comparison, in 2013 the GFFR attended 473 total calls (182 fire, 36 rescue, 255 first responder), while in 2014 they responded to 468 calls (171 fire, 41 rescue, 256 first responder).

“It was a pretty significant jump,” said Kevin McKinnon, deputy fire chief. “If you look at the individual categories it’s not just one, all categories are up. It was pretty much across the board.”

the Rock Creek fires in August. “Although that made a bunch of work not a lot of that shows up in our total,” he said. “That 615, our numbers for August, don’t reflect Stickpin because that work was done without us being paged out for it. The 615 are calls through 9-1-1 not the additional stuff like patrols for Stickpin.”

MacKinnon said the fire department had 45 volunteers last year and are now at 50. In 2014 there were 39 volunteers. “The last two years we’ve been bumping our numbers up in part because of the increase in call volume,” he said.

Other big news for the fire department last year was the arrival of the new 30 metre (100 foot) ladder truck, which came in at $1,071,459. “In some respects we’ve been fortunate we haven’t had any significant fires although we have had it out at a few calls,” said McKinnon. “We had a bit of a quiet period. The advantage of that is that we’ve been able to ensure everyone has been well trained on it so that when we do get a call we’re prepared.”

McKinnon said the truck is working well and is a big asset to the fleet.

Family fun

With the participation of Mother Nature, Family Day in Grand Forks and the area was a big success.

There was no shortage of fun things to do for the family all weekend and the great majority of it was free. The city put on a Family Day event downtown that was enjoyed by hundreds as they partook in bowling, road hockey, ATV rides and much more. New this year was a “Fun Mudder” obstacle course.

The ice fishing derby at Wilgress Lake also benefitted from the sunshine with a strong crowd out there.

If that wasn’t enough for families, there was also free swimming and skating offered

by GFREC, as well as a very popular free ski day at Phoenix Mountain.

Family Day is a relatively new holiday clocking in at three years old. The holiday offers a nice little break between the Christmas holidays and Spring Break. With the cold weather and snow we’ve had in January, it’s certainly nice to get a little respite as we rest and recharge our batteries.

And being able to spend time with family is always a welcome treat.

Reckonings DELLA MALLETTE This past Groundhog Day, most of the furry prognosticators we look to for our winter outlook declared winter over.

The State of Pennsylvania is famous for having the most wellknown groundhog out there: Punxsutawney Phil. He did not see his shadow and with great pomp and ceremony, the townspeople declared his determination.

The findings were independently verified by a groundhog in Canada, where Shubenacadie Sam also saw no shadow.

Shubenacadie Sam lives in Nova Scotia at the Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park, where he tweets about what he does the other 364 days a year. He didn’t see his shadow this year! More

There’s a dissenter in the bunch, and it’s the very special Wiarton Willie of Ottawa. He’s special because he’s an albino!

Willie also tweeted out his result the morning of Feb. 2, and he said it’s six more weeks of winter for us.

An untimely death has cast a shadow over this year’s Groundhog Day festivities in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Willow, the Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre’s resident prognosticator, died on Friday just preceding Groundhog Day on Tuesday. As a result, Groundhog Day events have been cancelled. Willow was dearly loved.

Willow, who was five when she died, came to the centre in 2010 after her mother was killed by a dog. The centre intended to release her back into the wild, but she broke her leg and after healing, had become too attached to the staff to survive on her own. Staff said in a Facebook

posting that they had “tears coming down our face” and were in “complete shock and sadness.”

There are other groundhogs that assist us with this long-standing tradition called Groundhog Day. A midwinter celebration involving an animal with predictive powers was an element of Celtic culture. The link between weather prediction and the day is said to have been inspired by an old Scottish couplet: “If Candlemas Day is bright and clear/ There’ll be two winters in the year.”

I don’t know if winter will be over in Eastern Canada, but it certainly seems like it is here in the Boundary. Hopefully we’ll have snow in the hills for a while yet—a good snowpack is critical for spring and summer (and skiers, boarders and snowmobilers aren’t ready to quit yet!). We’ll also get days of snow and/or rain; winter doesn’t transition to spring in a single day. But

It was bright and clear for Family Day, the whole weekend in fact. Whether winter is on the downside or not, February is a great time to have a celebration. Festivities included skating, swimming, skiing and bowling; events held downtown featured rides on a fire truck, a movie at the GEM, a fun mudder, ATV rides, street hockey, Nathan the Magician, hot dogs, cotton candy, hot chocolate… I’m sorry I’m likely forgetting something, there was so much happening.

The weekend also featured the Wilgress Lake Ice Fishing Derby, which is well known as a family event. Not an angler?

Snowcarving, snowshoe races, beverages and snacks—it’s not just about fishing about Wilgress Lake.

GF Fall Fair ready for return Editor, The Gazette: How does one describe “Life in the Boundary, Then and Now?” Our history has amazing stories to tell. In 2015 when the Grand Forks Fall Fair Society began this intriguing theme for the 105th year of the fair, it was realized then just what Grand Forks had and has to offer.

It was unfortunate that due to our wildfires and the amount of smoke our region retained, we were forced to cancel our

event.

Well……. we have decided to do the theme again!

Please mark August 26 – 28th, 2016 on your calendars for the 106th year of the Fair, and as in past years, it will be held at Dick Bartlett Park and the Grand Forks Curling Rink.

Our theme will remain the same and our entertainment fulfilling.

To make our year a successful one, the Board has made the decision to waive charges to

our Vendors for the weekend of events.

Gallery 2, Boundary Museum and the Grand Forks Public Library will be participating in the celebration of BC Heritage Week, February 1522 Each venue will be focusing their projects on this year’s theme entitled “Distinctive Destinations” which will concentrate on the History and Culture of the Doukhobor People. Gallery 2 has distributed over a 100 posters into the Boundary Area, posters hand painted by the elementary students from JA Hutton Elementary and DA Perley Elementary Schools.

Gallery 2 will be showcasing storyboards created by Grand Forks Secondary School’s social study students. The boards depict the history of the Doukhobor’s beginnings in Canada. Please take the time to stop by, the boards are quite impressive. Boundary Museum Society has a full week with more than 300 students visiting the museum from both JA Hutton and DA Perley Elementary schools over a period of three days.

The society has a number of activities scheduled including a bread making demonstration in an

outdoor bread oven, butter churning, borscht demonstration and tasting, rug making with a loom, Doukhobor room with ladle wood carvings. There will also be a presentation about Saddle Lake - The Granby Wilderness Society will be presenting information on the creation of Saddle Lake and what its cultural uses and values were.

They will also tell how people presently value the lake and what critters now call it home.

The public is invited to attend the demonstrations as well, please contact Cher at 250-442-3737 for dates and times. Also the Boundary Museum and members of the Doukhobor community have scheduled visits to local senior’s facilities to present the Doukhobor story through photographs and artifacts. They’re asking residents to dress in their traditional costumes from their many ancestral backgrounds.

The Grand Forks Public Library will have a display of books on the history of the Doukhobor. Please take the time to visit each venue and celebrate with us! Millions in change

We left you saying that we would explain other ways besides commu+ Change nity grants that Phoenix Foundation “spends” money earned by investments each year. There are six addiPHOENIX tional ways. Today we cover two of FOUNDATION OF them.

THE BOUNDARY COMMUNITIES Scholarships Nine scholarship funds have been (or are in the process of being) established: Boundary Area Retired Teachers’ Association; Gordon Keir; Grand Forks and District Business Community; Grand Forks District Savings Credit Union; Hall-Treptow; J.J. McDonnell; John Nilsen Memorial; Rotary Club of Grand Forks; and Terry Fitzgerald Memorial. There is one family fund (Dick and Irene Bartlett Family Fund), the revenues of which go to the Grand Forks Rotary Club Scholarship Fund.

In total, the value of these 10 funds is (approximately) $267,988.15. (“Approximately” because figures are from our last audited statements, and changes have certainly occurred since.)

Most of these funds direct available money to the School District 51 Scholarship Committee. This committee reviews student applications and makes decisions based on criteria established by each fund. Some scholarship funds are managed (that is the revenues each year, are managed) by the donors. They make the decisions about who will receive the scholarships.

Last year the amount available for scholarships was $7,475. It is comforting to know similar amounts will be generated for future students continuing their education.

An additional comment at this moment. A point was raised at our January board meeting: not all of our children are strong academically. Some of our students earn solid “Cs”. We want EVERY child in the Boundary to experience support to be the best person they can be in the world.

Is there a way to establish some “scholarship” funds that recognize and reward those students who are NOT going on to post-secondary education, but who are terrific young people in many ways—just not scholastically? If you have thoughts about how the Phoenix Foundation could accomplish this, we welcome your input.

Agency Funds Agency funds have been established by non-corporate groups: Boundary District Arts Council Society, Boundary Family and Individual Services Society, Boundary Women’s Coalition, Christina Lake Stewardship Society, Grand Forks Art Gallery, Grand Forks Gyro Club (no longer operating), Rock Creek Medical Society, Grand Forks Rotary Club, USCC, and West Boundary Elementary School.

These total $153,049.85. Last year, Phoenix Foundation disbursed $4,961.27 to these groups.

Most groups receive revenues from their funds yearly, and use them to help fund their operations/programs. Some groups actively grow their endowments so that their funds can provide better future income for them.

For example, the Boundary Women’s Coalition, which operates the Boundary Women’s Transition House and the Boundary Women’s Resource Centre, has a fund with a current approximate value of $19,000.

The coalition’s collective board recently decided to undertake doubling the value of their fund within the next five years. Hopefully other agencies will take on similar challenges.

Hired Equipment Registration West Kootenay District

The West Kootenay District of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is creating its list of registered Equipment for Hire for the 2016/2017 fiscal year, which begins April 1, 2016.

All individuals or companies who are currently registered through the ministry’s offices in Nelson or Grand Forks will receive invitations to re-register their equipment for the coming fiscal year by mail.

Individuals or companies who were not registered in 2015, but wish to have their equipment listed, are invited to visit or phone the Nelson or Grand Forks office to obtain the appropriate registration forms.

You will be required to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance with minimum $2 million third party liability and a WorkSafe BC clearance letter prior to starting work on any ministry projects. Dump trucks must provide a current weigh slip, front tire size, and manufacturer’s front axle rating.

Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year and must be owned or leased-to-own in order to be eligible for registration. Seniority is not transferable from area to area.

The deadline for registrations is March 18, 2016.

Late registrations will be accepted, but may appear at the bottom of the open list. Note that there is no charge for registering equipment or for changing or deleting equipment information already listed.

Orphaned magazines need you

Still lots of orphaned magazines Two weeks ago, my column was about our Adopt-a-Magazine campaign.

I wrote that our library subscribes to dozens of magazines – these are read widely and voraciously by many of you. This year, we are re-launching our Adopt-a-Magazine program, in which you can donate the cost of the annual subscription of your favourite magazine. Your generosity will be recognized with a label on each issue (unless you’d like to remain anonymous) – it’s an effective way to advertise your business, honour a friend or family member, or just support your local library.

There are still plenty of orphaned magazines up for adoption, and we have some really cool new ones worth a mention. There’s This magazine, which is a “Fiercely independent and proudly subversive” Canadian publication.

There’s also Monitor, published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, which covers “issues of social, climate and economic justice.” Or what about Watershed Sentinel, an independent environmental journal? Chances are we

Thank you to the City of Grand Forks; to businesses and groups such as the GEM Theatre, Sunshine Lanes, GFREC, Border Bruins, Phoenix Ski Hill and ATV Club; to Wilgress Lake derby organizers for adding greatly to the weekend; and to everyone who took part in what’s fast becoming a fun winter break. Even if there’s not a lot of winter left, a relaxing day in February is most welcome. And turning it into a whole weekend? Even better!

We don’t have Groundhog Day festivities, but I reckon our own special Family Day events the weekend right afterward are something to be proud of, and to look forward to each year. Winter’s over only when Mother Nature says it’s over—we’ll celebrate family instead.

The Member & Community Relations Committee of the Grand Forks District Savings Credit Union, is accepting nominations for positions on the Credit Union’s Board of Directors.

Nominations will close at 5:00 pm on Friday, February 12, 2016. No further nominations will be accepted after that date. Members will be voting for three 3 year positions, during the six business days March 31 – April 7, 2016 inclusive, in the office of the Credit Union. Grand Forks Credit Union (GFCU) has been serving our members – who live near and far – since 1949. We are a member-owned financial cooperative. Imagine, if you will, the 19 original founders of our credit union meeting at the Grower’s Exchange one August evening in 1949 and contributing $30 each. Granted its charter on August 22, 1949, the Credit Union started attracting attention.

Within a year, 50 members had joined and assets were over $400.

Today, we are almost 9,000 members strong with more than $220 million dollars in assets providing a full range of competitive financial products and services and continually re-investing into our communities.

What would the Boundary be like if the credit union had never been born – or suddenly disappeared today? From the beginning, our job has been to make a way for regular people to access financing to help them live their dreams… originally for farmers and small business. We’ve stayed true to our purpose, continuing in the tradition of the cooperative movement.

Small housing, downsizing, cluster housing and eco-zoning—let’s have a conversation, says Peter Matheson, who will facilitate a housing segment of the Grand Forks and District Public Library’s “Let’s Talk About…” series.

“The City of Grand Forks has invited input on a proposed ‘eco-zone’ that would provide a great hosuing diversity for our community. I would like to contribute to that input,” Matheson said.

“The regional district is also receptive to creative housing solutions.”

Matheson, a designer/builder, has built a 125-square-foot “tiny house” and is passionate about the issue of housing.

He’s posed a few questions to get the conversation going: Do we own our houses, or do

our houses own us? Have we ever considered that our houses, like our brains, are wildly out of proportion to the volume we actually use?

What might we gain by reducing our housing footprint? Is sharing a micro-solar utility a viable alternative in the Boundary?

“Seniors, students young couples and emptynesters might be more attracted to living here if we offered affordable, lower-impact higherdensity development options and ‘laneway’ housing,” he said. “What about tiny houses? We can put the Boundary on the map with innovative, grassroots, sustainable, alternative development.”

The “Let’s Talk About…Small Housing” conversation will be held at the Grand Forks library on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 6:30 (sharp) - 7:45 p.m.

Werner said the majority of the people at the meeting were opposed to the development and were there to voice their concerns. She is also concerned that the development will be quite pricey and be not affordable for most seniors.

“This is not assisted living,” she said. “This is not subsidized. This is people who can afford water front.”

Donna Dean, manager of planning and development for the RDKB, said that they have looked into many of the questions brought forward at the hearing and will bring those forward at a planned hearing on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Christina Lake Community Hall. There will be an

“A number of questions were raised,” she said. “Staff have taken a look at those and will come up with some firm answers. One of the concerns was what happens if the senior’s housing development didn’t go forward.”

Dean said that they have the authority to enact a bylaw to allow the land to only be used for seniors. “There are a few different things we can do through that bylaw, through the local government act, such as determine the form of tenure.

So is it rental? Are they for sale? Do you purchase or rent the units? You can also make the units available only to a certain type of people. As well as prices and how you would apply for a unit. So we hope that will alleviate some of the concerns raised at the hearing.”

The staff at the Lake consist of the fire chief and the local assistant fire commissioner, deputy fire chief and training officer, three fire captains, a safety officer, 20 firefighters (two of which are lieutenants as they are first responder instructors in that capacity) and a retired member acting as public relations and photographer.

“At this time not all members are ‘first responders’ however, we have first responder training scheduled for the beginning of 2016 and recertification training also for early 2016,” said Gresley-Jones. “We also have a team certified in spinal management, pediatric airway management, automatic electric defibrillator, swift water rescue and emergency child birth.”

Gresley Jones added the fire training is ongoing. CLFR also continues to operate the “jaws of life” out of their new rescue unit and maintain a critical incident stress team on call for member on an ongoing basis.

CLFR responded to 131 emergency calls in 2015 (up until Dec. 14). “There were four fire investiagtion reports submitted to the office of the fire commissioner,” said Gresley-Jones. “The remaining calls related to motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and rescue operations.”

Complaints to the fire commissioner (GresleyJones) were up for 11 to 79, all of which were resolved locally and without any enforcement action taking place.

“We continue to have mutual aid agreements with Grand Forks and the Orient Washington Fire Service,” said Gresley-Jones. “We also work with provincial agreements with the provincial ambulance and forest service.”

The Fun Spot Bruins ready for big home stand in Castlegar 4-3 in double overtime with Haney scoring the game winner assisted by Grambo and Connor Manegre. Also scoring for GF were Austin Dean in the first period, Garret Brisebois, who had a power play marker in the second, and Logan Casavant, also scoring in the second.

The Bruins are busy this coming week with four games in five days all at home. In fact, for the rest of the regular season the team plays all their games at home in the friendly confines of Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. First up is Spokane on Thursday followed by Creston Valley Saturday, Osoyoos Sunday and Castlegar next Tuesday (Feb. 16).

The Bruins went one and one this past week as they continue to prepare for the upcoming playoffs. On Saturday the Bruins hosted the Columbia Valley Rockies losing 5-2 after beating Castlegar earlier in the week.

Against the Rockies the Bruins got down early, giving up a first period goal to Michael Cardinal and a second period power goal to Ryan St. Jean to go down 2-0. Dylan Haney got the Bears on the board with a goal at 6:59 of the second assisted by Chad Grambo and Nico Sidoni. St. Jean scored his second for the squad from Invermere at 10:36 of the third to put the Rockies up 3-1.

Grambo scored for GF a couple of minutes later to pull the Bruins to within one assisetd by Haney and Logan Hascarl. The Bruins battled hard looking for the equalizer but fell short giving up two empty netters to the Rockies for the 5-2 loss.

On Feb. 2 the Bruins knocked off the Rebels

Bear bites Grand Forks is six points ahead of Nelson in the battle for third place in the Neil Murdoch Division.

In all likelihood the Bruins will face Castlegar in the first round of the play-offs. The other match-up will likely see division leading Beaver Valley face Nelson.

Intensity key for Wolves SUBMITTED

The Grand Forks junior boys basketball team are back in tournament action this week after placing second last week in Trail.

Grand Forks travelled with a roster of only seven players due to injuries and schedule conflicts. Despite the depleted bench, all Wolves saw ample game time and contributed in different fashions.

GF’s first game was on Jan. 22 where the Wolves beat L.V Rogers (Nelson) for the third time this season 72-32. The boys played high intensity defense, winning the first quarter 29-4.

Coach O’Brien deemed the performance “a great bounce back win” after losing their first game of the year to J.L Crowe (Trail) on Wednesday.

Saturday morning, the Wolves were able to avenge that three-point home loss, winning in decisive fashion, 67-24 in the semifinal matchup against J.L Crowe.

Noor Sibat was the standout of the game, hitting two three pointers and controlling the offensive tempo from the high post.

“In our loss to Crowe, we were rushing our offense, trying to do too much in tight spaces,” O’Brien commented. “This time around, we played with poise, patience and an unselfishness, which is a recipe for success at any level.”

The tournament championship game was set between Grand Forks and Prince Charles Secondary from Creston. GF opened the aggressor, running out to a 14-0 lead to start the

game. However, the poise and patience that led the Wolves in their second game was the deciding factor in Creston’s comeback.

“Creston played an admirable game. To go down like that to start, not to lose composure, and to fight back point by point is a lesson I hope these boys don’t soon forget.

We learned a lot tonight about what type of team we want to be,” O’Brien commented after the 43-50 loss. The Wolves’ small bench was an eventual factor in the second half the game, as the boys showed fatigue, shying away from their fast break style, and losing the battle on the glass.

The Wolves fought valiantly in the final two minutes as Liam McKinlay hit two threepointers and Noor Sibat added one more, cutting the lead to four before giving up some late free throws.

Despite no longer being undefeated, Grand Forks is staying focused and looking forward to a hopeful rematch.

“We are going to have some tough practices this weekend, and prepare for the opportunity to meet Creston in another championship matchup this weekend. We are excited by the challenge,” O’Brien said.

The next home game for the GFSS junior boys is against Mt. Sentinel from South Slocan (Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m.) After press time.

Grade 8 girls The GFSS grade 8 girls team won their tournament on the weekend beating Prince Charles of Creston 32-20 in the final after losing to them 33-22 the day before. GFSS also beat trail 50-11 on Friday and 28-12 Saturday.

Phoenix Mountain joins Intl Ski Area Consortium SUBMITTED

Phoenix Mountain has joined an international consortium of community and independent ski areas, known as the Mountain Playground Group.

Facilitated by the Mountain Rider’s Alliance (MRA), participating ski areas will band together to increase skier visits and share best practice and marketing strategies.

“Mountain Riders Alliance has been studying the challenges facing smaller ski areas since 2010,” said Jamie Schectman, MRA CEO and co-founder. “The Mountain Playground Group is a solutions-based approach for stand-alone ski areas to work together and ensure a better chance of survival, as well as provide a layer of sophistication not commonly found at the smaller ski area level.”

bobcat and lynx photos A bobcat/lynx MSc study is currently under way at the University of BC Okanagan, in partnership with BC's Ministry of Environment, and we need your help. We are seeking photos of bobcats and lynx captured by trail cameras, or conventional cameras, from all corners of the province and from all time periods to help determine the current provincial distribution of each species. We think that bobcats are moving northwards and into higher elevations.

FortisBC Inc. has contracted Asplundh Canada ULC to manage vegetation near power lines within its service area. This work is necessary to reduce safety hazards near electrical wires and to prevent power outages caused by trees or tree limbs making contact with the lines.

Clearing around the low voltage lines that deliver power to individual residences remains the responsibility of the property owner. For safety reasons, FortisBC encourages homeowners to enlist the help of a qualified professional when pruning near low voltage lines.

The photos do not have to be great photography - they just have to show a bobcat or a lynx, or even just a part of one. Photos can be blurry or dark and don't even have to clearly show which cat species is present.

When sending photos, please include both the date and location of each photo. Location should be as specific as possible: most preferred is UTM or LAT/LONG coordinates. If that information is not available, then please provide the name of the nearest road or landmark (including distance and direction from road or landmark), or nearest town (including distance and direction from town), or watershed or Management Unit.

Photos will be used for data only (which species was where when) and will not influence management decisions regarding hunting/trapping bag limits or season dates. Photos will not be published or shared with anyone without permission, and photographers will retain ownership of their photos. The results of this study will be gladly shared with all those who are interested.

Though this winter is mild, it still often brings on cold and flu. Food alone can’t protect us against the common flu or cold, however you can bolster your immunity with proper nutrition to reduce the risk of getting sick.

Many experts agree that a whole foods diet along with adequate sleep, moderate exercise and minimal stress contributes to a stronger immune system and a faster recovery if you do get sick.

The main goal of eating for colds and flu prevention is to boost the activity of your immune system. Here are some easy tips: Stay hydrated. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. You need to drink plenty of clean filtered water to help your body flush out toxins. Toxins contribute to inflammation in the body and weakening of the immune system. Also, staying hydrated will help to lubricate mucous membranes in your throat and nasal passages thus aiding in trapping the viruses.

Avoid sugar and processed foods, which have little or no nutritional value and can suppress your immune system due to their content of anti-

nutrients: high fructose corn syrup, various additives, artificial colours and flavors. The immune-suppressing effect of sugar and sugary foods can start 30 minutes after ingestion and may last for up to 5 hours! In fact, eating any kind of sugar can potentially reduce your body’s defense mechanisms by 75% or more! In place of sugar try to use small amounts of natural sweeteners, such as: coconut syrup, stevia, honey and maple syrup.

Eat a variety of whole, fresh foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants: Rich in vitamin C organic leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, kale), broccoli, cranberries and lemons.

Garlic has antiviral and antimicrobial properties due to its compound allicin. Chop it up and let it sit for 10 minutes before adding it to your favourite dishes for the beneficial compounds to form.

Squashes, carrots, sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which in the body gets converted to vitamin A. Oysters, pumpkin seeds, cashews, almonds contain zinc, the essential mineral.

Blueberries – antioxidant powerhouses, contain high levels of a very potent antioxidant anthocyanin.

Rich in probiotics fermented foods (kefir, plain organic yogurt, homemade sauerkraut) can help restore your gut flora. Since 80% of our immune system cells are in the gut, it’s crucial to keep it healthy.

Spicy Cranberry-Ginger Tea 1/3 cup frozen cranberries 1 cinnamon stick 1 lemon rind (from 1 lemon) 1 tbsp of lemon juice (optional) 1 inch piece of ginger, chopped 2 cups water 1 tbsp unpasteurized honey Put all the ingredients, except honey and lemon juice, in a small pot.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the tea using the sieve. Add honey and lemon juice. Enjoy! Serves 2.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST (FULL TIME) Under the general direction of the Manager of Planning and Development, the Engineering Technologist is responsible for assistance in providing engineering technical services such as consultation, design, implementation and inspection of water, roads, sewer, parks, drainage and related engineering projects and various other duties as assigned, and to work in conjunction with the Planning Technician on various initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience: • High School Graduation • 2 yr diploma in Civil Engineering technology or a combination of equivalent training, experience and education • Eligibility for membership as an Applied Science Technologist with ASTTBC • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License • Necessary knowledge of engineering design, surveying, mathematics, MMCD specifications, drafting principles, practices, procedures and techniques relating to land development, surveying, planning, processing construction and municipal engineering work • Necessary knowledge of municipal bylaws, regulations, engineering standards, policies and procedures relative to all aspects of land surveying • Communicate effectively with the public, contractors, engineers, consultants in handling inquiries and resolving issues with engineering and Public works projects • Develop and maintain effective workplace relationships • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy • Plan and organize daily work • Make effective decisions • Skill, ability, knowledge of all functions detailed in the job description • Necessary knowledge of computer software applications including but not limited to AutoCad, Microsoft Office Suite, GIS, etc.

Benefits: This is a Union position, subject to all Sections of the C.U.P.E. Local 4728 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Wage rate for this position as per the Collective Agreement is $32.33/hour

Junior girls finish 2 and 2 in Midway Gazette Staff

The Grand Forks Secondary junior girls basketball team played in a five-team tournament in Midway this weekend, winning two of four games.

On Friday, the Wolves lost 36-30 to Charles Bloom from Lumby despite a strong outing from Victoria Henne,

who scored 10 points. Tara Makortoff, Portia Dagg and Sarah Malkinson added six each. Victoria was named player of the game.

On Saturday the Wolves played Nakusp first and won easily 61-5. Leading the way for the Wolves was Makortoff with 12 points, while Dylann Asling and Elizabeth Henne added eight.

Player of the game for Grand Forks was Caitlin Black, who scored four points and added several blocks in a strong defensive game.

The final game for GFSS saw a rematch with spunky BCSS. The Wolves easily handled the Roadrunners a month ago but this time the Midway team rose to the task.

The first quarter saw the Wolves hold a 7-6 lead as BCSS battled hard.

“We struggled to score once again,” said Lindsay. “BCSS played strong defence and kept us from running our plays and getting easy baskets. Once we settled down in the second quarter we were fine.

Our pressure defence helped set the pace.”

A strong second quarter effort saw GFSS pull out to a 21-9 lead at half-time. The Wolves then held on for the 35-22 win. Top scorer for the Wolves were Elizabeth Henne, Victoria Henne, Tara Makortoff and Portia Dagg with six points each. Makortoff was named player of the game.

“It was good to finish on a strong note,” said Lindsay. “Everyone contributed in the last game particularly.

We had 13 players that stepped it up on defence. Oksana Stoochnoff, in particular, played really strong defence and helped us keep the lead and keep the pressure on Midway.”

The Wolves head to Trail this coming weekend for a fourteam tournament at J.L. Crowe.
