SURREY — The City of Surrey will be replacing nearly 30,000 street lights with LED bulbs over the next five years.

The move comes with an upfront price tag of $11 million but

Coun. Bruce Hayne said it will yield savings in the long term.

“It’ll be a net savings to the city of $1.3 million a year,” noted Hayne. “So the cost of the replacement will be paid off in about eight years. Then, the maintenance on them, replacing of bulbs, that will be an ongoing savings.”

LED offers superior lighting colour, lower maintenance costs as the bulbs have a life expectancy of 20 years instead of five, and a power savings of about 30 per cent.

As far as Hayne is aware, Surrey is the first jurisdiction in North American to do a complete lighting replacement of LED bulbs.

Surrey’s engineering department has been evaluating LED roadway lighting for the past year, with a pilot project in Newton Town Centre.

The installation of eight lights near Newton rec centre received “positive feedback,” according to a city report.

The first phase of the plan

will see the conversion of 7,100 street lamps to LED lighting in Guildford and City Centre.

Mayor Linda Hepner noted that in addition to cost savings, the move has another benefit: “For motorists, cyclists and pedestrians the LED lights will enhance visibility and safety.”

Five years ago, the retired Surrey firefighter invented the city’s Toque Tuesday event.

Ever since he’s presided as its “Supreme Commander,” every second Tuesday of February, rain or shine.

Baillie is all about drawing attention to the plight of Canada’s homeless.

The rodent, not so much.

Organizers of Whalley’s Toque Tuesday use a national pastime – hockey – to create more awareness about the national shame of homelessness, especially during these cold winter months. What better way to draw attention to the plight of homeless people in Canada than to call a street hockey game?

Asked how long will he continue to be “Supreme Commander,” wearing that same goofy red toque he wears every year, Baillie ponders a while.

“God knows. You know what?

I’ll make a deal. When people no longer call the first Tuesday, or February 2nd like this year, Groundhog Day and instead they call it Toque Tuesday – Y’know, I’m driving here this morning and all I hear on the radio is ‘It’s Groundhog Day, it’s Groundhog Day’ – this is an international day of awareness for homelessness, and that’s what this whole thing is about is making sure people at least one day of the year recognize

Punjabi versions of the “Reflections” docs will air at a later date, Dhillon said, and episodes done in English will be repeated on the OMNI station and its website throughout the year.

Dhillon heads MMM Films. This coming summer, the Surrey-based company will release a feature film, a set-in-B.C. romantic comedy called “The Fusion Generation.”

While working on the “Reflections” series, Dhillon said he was forced to take time off from his work as editor of The Link newspaper.

“When you do an eight-part doc series of one hour each, most filmmakers will usually work on one at a time but with this, I was working on eight of them at once, and I directed all of them,” Dhillon revealed.

“That was probably very ambitious, and everything was delayed by about six months, in terms of delivery of the (series).

During the post-production work, finishing them, I had five or six different editors working simultaneously on the different docs. There is no way one editor could do all that, so we had to speed up post-production.”

CLOVERDALE — A Surrey parents advisory committee is hoping a powerful hour-long presentation will help parents understand the pressures on their children – and ulitimately keep them out of gangs.

Called “End Gang Life,” the Feb. 11 forum will feature a talk from Surrey RCMP Const. Jordan McLellan, a gang enforcement officer who will explain the myths and realities of gang lifestyles.

I

n a dimly lit parking lot in a Newton industrial area on a clear Thursday night, eight young people jump into vehicles.

Equipped with radios and emergency scanners, they head out to patrol Surrey’s roads.

“Stay safe,” leader Mateen Aminie tells his team.

“Whiskey One to base,” Jerry Gunadasa says into the radio as the van pulls out onto 82nd Avenue.

It’s 9 p.m. and the team’s shift is under way. It will end at 2 a.m.

This is the Citizen’s Community Safety Watch, a Surrey Crime Prevention Society program that runs Thursday through Sunday.

SCPS volunteers, who serve as extra eyes and ears on the street, made 831 calls to law enforcement that generated files in 2015 – an average of more than two a day.

On this night I’m tagging along with Aminie, a longtime volunteer turned staff member, and two volunteers, Gunadasa and Melvyn Mani.

Our first patrol was around the Newton bus loop. As it turns out,

it’s also where Aminie was hit over the head with a bat and mugged at just 14. It’s what spurred him to dedicate his life to public safety.

At 12:30 a.m. on a snowy January 2011 night, Aminie was coming home from his job at Five Guys Burgers in South Surrey and had his ear phones in.

The next thing he knew, he awoke at home the next morning.

Apparently, the blow to the head had knocked him out cold, and three men then kicked him in the face and robbed him. He woke up with a bruised and cut face, a black eye and broken teeth.

He later found out a cab driver had driven by and called police.

“That was the starting point for wanting to help,” he said as we passed the very spot he was attacked.

“It’s ironic that the police office, the Newton District 3 office, is right there,” he remarked, pointing.

Aminie, now 20, had immigrated to Canada just one year before the attack.

“Back home (in Pakistan), people hate the police. They take bribes, they take your money. If they pull you over, they’ll steal whatever you have,” he told me.

But the positive interaction he had with police here in Surrey changed his perception. Inspired, he now patrols the very area he was mugged.

“When I go home, I feel good about it. Even if we didn’t do much, maybe we deterred something from happening,” Aminie said.

The Citizen’s Community Safety Watch is just one of Aminie’s gigs. He also works full-time as a Richmond bylaw officer, and is enrolled in the Justice Institute.

Like many other SCPS volunteers on duty that night, his sights are set on becoming an officer.

“Let’s hope I make it through, I’m almost there,” he said. “It’s a demanding process.”

It’s now about 9:15 p.m. and we take off down King George Boulevard, heading to the heart of Whalley. That’s where most of the action is, Aminie tells me.

“There are lots of fights happening around Gateway (SkyTrain), we come across that quite a bit. Blood, everything.”

Hot spots for undesirable activity tend to be SkyTrain stations and bus loops, as well as one street in particular, 135A Street.

That’ll be our next stop.

As we roll in, we see at least two dozen people walking or sitting along the roadway. Tents and bikes line the chain-link fence across from the emergency shelter.

As we approach 108th Avenue, we notice a newer black truck parked on the right side of the road.

It seems we’ve caught the tail-end of a street brawl between two men.

One in a black sweatsuit is still huffing and puffing, breathing heavily with a crazed look in his eye. He let’s out a bark-like “woof ” sound.

The other, dressed in a white “wife-beater” T-shirt and light blue jeans, is pulling his baggy pants up.

He’s brandishing something black, which he slips into his pocket.

“Is that a knife? Does he have a knife?” Aminie asks us.

“Are you going to leave soon?” he yells over to the man, who then approaches the vehicle.

Just two inches away from Aminie’s face at the open window, blood drips from his lip.

“Yeah, I’m good, I’m good. I’m leaving,” the man responds.

He then walks away.

“It’s worse sometimes,” Aminie reveals. “This one guy had cuts on his face, it was slashed all over…

Working to prevent crime since 1982

S

urrey Crime Prevention Society is a volunteerbased organization that acts independently from the RCMP. It gets its funding from the city, the province and corporate sponsors.

More than 300 volunteers committed nearly 30,000 hours to the Surrey in 2015.

The group started in 1982 and its programming includes Community Safety Tours, Citizen’s Community Safety Watch (highlighted in this story), a Traffic Safety program, graffiti removal, youth programs and more.

SCPS provides support at the annual Vaisakhi Parade, Fusion Festival, Cloverdale Rodeo and more, attending 63 special events in 2015.

If it continues and they don’t stop, then we call the police.”

Pulling over, we keep our eyes peeled on the man in white. He soon walks back toward the black truck.

“He’s going to get his ass kicked again,” says a frustrated Aminie.

It’s tough to only have the power to observe, he tells me.

“We can’t come into contact, we’re not trained to do so. As a police officer you have the freedom to do so. It just bugs me.

“We’re going to have a long night,” he says as he pulls off of 135A. Aminie never knows what to expect out on patrol. Some nights are boring and uneventful, others full of excitement and intensity.

One memory sticks in his mind.

“This car came by with a huge dent in its fender. As it was driving off the tire was smoking and screeching. It looked very suspicious.”

He called police.

“I told them the plate and right away, eight cruisers flew in. It was gang-related. Right when they got there they busted into the house….

It was a big show.”

There’s also the strange.

One night he saw a woman, whom he described as mentally ill, walking barefoot over gravel.

He tried to give her his shoes – he had a spare pair – but she barely noticed and just carried on yelling gibberish.

Then there was the team who heard a woman’s screams in the back of a truck and chased two suspected kidnappers all the way to North Vancouver before police intercepted.

Aminie told me another story, though he wasn’t on shift this particular night: Tragedy struck when a group of drunk kids were hanging out near the fishing docks.

“They decided it would be fun to hop on the train that came by and hang off of it while it’s moving.

One of the girls fell and she lost her whole arm. She was screaming for help and drunk, and her friends couldn’t help because they were drunk too.”

The volunteers called an ambulance and did what they could.

“At the end of the day, we’re not supposed to get out of the car.

But to help out, that’s just human nature, right?”

Crime is down — or is it?

h yes, crime statistics.

How we analyze them changes the resulting headline.

When it comes to the most recent Surrey stats, there’s good news and bad news, depending on how you look at them.

Violent crime in Surrey dropped from the third to the fourth quarter in 2015, from 2,013 files to 1,834, including a decline in reported assaults, from 977 to 861.

This is good.

But if we take a look at all of 2014 compared to all of 2015, the results aren’t as desireable.

Violent crimes rose by 36 per cent, from 5,382 cases in 2014 to 7,328 last year. Homicides dropped, while attempted murders rose. Sexual assaults rose 40 per cent (220 to 308) and assaults went up 19 per cent (2,972 to 3,530).

It’s a different story on the property crime front. Those are just simply down. Incidents of property crimes went down from 2015’s third to fourth quarter and there was an overall decline of 11 per cent from 2014 to 2015.

So is crime down? Yes and no, depending who you ask. We’ll let you decide.

Not all Surrey migrants are bad news. But sadly, some are SoLetItBeDone Tom Zytaruk

So let it be written…

W

e’ve heard a lot about Syrian migrants. Today, I’m thinking about Surrey migrants.

The latter, of course, don’t have bombs raining down on their homes. Many don’t have homes. Nor do they risk drowning, although some do very nearly freeze.

These are the economically disadvantaged people who were pushed out of Whalley into Newton, after developers began knocking down older ranchers and bungalows in and around the city centre and set about erecting tall buildings in their stead. The city, of course, also got in the game with its new library and swank city hall.

Today they’re calling it the University District and I’m sure it may well grow into its name.

They call it progress. For some people, that is. For others, it’s time to move on, whether they like it or not.

This city has seen much migration over

the past years, from neighbouring cities as well as within the city itself. I’ve seen a lot of social migration during my time as a reporter here in Surrey, and most carried with it an element of desperation and despair, as well as nimbyism.

In the early 1990s, after the Surrey Needle Exchange started operating on 135A Street, we saw an exodus of people come into Whalley from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

At roughly the same time, prostitutes and their johns were regularly lobbed back and forth between Whalley and Edmonds, depending on which police force was conducting a crackdown at the time. It was like an absurd tennis match between two jurisdictions, with the Fraser River being the net.

Likewise, many mentally ill people were pushed to the street after Woodlands Institution was closed.

Even typically sleepy Cloverdale experienced a little crime wave that was blamed on an “element” migrating there from elsewhere in Surrey.

Now Fleetwood is feeling it.

Rick Hart, president of the Fleetwood Community Association, noted this week at a Surrey Board of Trade breakfast meeting that although his community is relatively

trouble-free compared to some other Surrey neighbourhoods, he’s noticed some changes over the past year, and not for the good. Panhandlers, squatters and graffiti.

Businesses have complained about people “shooting up” drugs in business washrooms.

“It’s more than what we’ve seen before,” said Hart, who suspects it’s coming from Newton, Whalley and Langley.

Still, what are you going to do about it? Being poor is not a crime, nor is panhandling, unless intimidating or threatening behaviour is involved.

At least we’re not Vancouver. That city made a bylaw in 1998 that banned panhandling within 10 metres of banks, bank machines and bus stops, prohibited sitting and lying on the street, and banned beggars from following people around and demanding their cash after they’ve said no.

A lot of good that did. Have you walked down Granville lately? Yeesh.

It seems whenever I’m in downtown Vancouver, I have a little adventure with a panhandler, or the mentally ill. Once, this big guy got up into my face while I was crossing Robson at an intersection. I’ll never forget what he said, before he shuffled off: “Your baby’s in the garbage, you goof.”

The squeegee guy who pounced on my car on Seymour, and told me to “F-off ” after I

turned my wipers on to show I didn’t need or want his services. The guy from Quebec who extorted $1 from me to “watch” my car because I parked on “his” corner. He had a screwdriver in his hand, suggesting my car wouldn’t be in the same shape when I returned if I didn’t pony up.

These guys make it even rougher for decent people who are going through a rough patch. Not everybody on the street, or being bounced from one community to the next, wants to make a career of it.

And so many people are on the line these days. VanCity recently reported that the number of payday loans taken out by British Columbians spiked by 58 per cent between 2012 and 2014. During Toque Tuesday, designed to bring awareness to the plight of the homeless in Surrey, organizer Tim Baillie noted that some “very proud people try to make it look like they’re doing better than they are.”

We must remember that not all Surrey migrants are bad news. When we can, and are able, we should lend a helping hand. As for the others, use your street smarts.

So let it be done.

Let’s put our phones down and focus on being parents The Editor, I recently had blood work done at a lab. While waiting patiently for 90 minutes, I bought donuts and coffee for the hard workers at the clinic.

I felt sorry for them for having to contend with those of us in society who think we need to be first. We need to slow down and relax. Enjoy life.

Give the front line workers a break. Our needs aren’t before others. Remember that.

Anyway, while I waited, I watched people. In particular, I watched a beautiful young parent with a toddler. The parent was intensely focused on a handheld device the entire time, hushing the child when the child tried to talk.

The child ran his/her hand through the parent’s hair and touched the parent – with no response.

(I am thankful I didn’t have the technology there is today – I had to actually interact with my children. Today, they are confident young adults).

The child became restless and was only pacified when allowed to hold the handheld device and play on it. Good grief.

What has society become? We lack basic interaction necessary to love and be loved.

There is no evolution with this basic need. And for older adults, we have become part of an ungrateful rat race thinking our needs are above others at the cost of the hard working front line workers.

Stop and appreciate those around you and what you have. Parents, start banishing yourselves from your phones while your child is around.

Incompetence or untruthfulness? You decide.

Now comes word that this band of maladroits is abandoning their commitment in the city’s five-year financial plan to increase property taxes in 2016 by 2.9 per cent and instead increasing them by 3.9 per cent. And as usual, they provide the usual excuses why this is necessary, while at the same time announcing proposed increases in the city’s capital expenditures, notably arenas, ice rinks, libraries and museums.

Of course, nowhere is there even a hint of any reduction in expenditures. Where have these people been the last year or so? We are in an economic downturn, likely leading to another recession and possibly worse.

But this band of misfits continues on its merry way, spending our hard-earned cash with abandonment. In tough economic times, fiscally responsible people cut back and control expenses.

Not Surrey’s city council of course.

After all, it’s our money council is throwing around. Cannot some of the capital projects identified wait awhile until the economy improves?

That would be the prudent thing to do but this bunch doesn’t know the meaning of the word. It’s time for the citizens of Surrey to demand a stop to this out-of-control budgeting.

We will not forget this recklessness come the Cynthia George, Burnaby next municipal election – when once again these politicians will try and buy us off with our own money.

Terry Waterhouse, Surrey’s new director of public safety strategies, who started in December, was also at the meeting. “I’m on a very steep learning curve,” he told the audience.

“What I’ve seen is Surrey acknowledges there are challenges when it relates to crime and other social challenges. What I’ve noticed is it’s a city that doesn’t shy away from acknowledging them. But more importantly I’ve noticed is it’s a city that acknowledges them and then acts on them.”

Waterhouse said his goal is to determine what Surrey’s “unmet challenges” are and how to set about fixing them.

Mom, kids hit by car NEWTON — A Surrey mother and her two young children are in hospital after they were struck by a car when walking across a Newton street close to their home on Tuesday.

Police say the family of four were crossing in or near a crosswalk near 76th Avenue and 147A Street at about 5:50 p.m. when a vehicle driving eastbound hit them.

The father was not injured and the mother had minor injuries.

Their six-year-old son is in hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover. Their fouryear-old daughter is in critical but stable condition, said RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann.

The driver remained at the scene, he added.

When it was revealed last year that Surrey property taxes would rise, Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation said residents must wonder where all the extra tax revenue from the city’s unprecedented growth is going.

“Part of the reason we need more cops in Surrey is because we have more people moving there,” Bateman said.

“You would think they would be paying into that system to contribute. Where is all that money going?”

All told, for 2015, the average tax bill for a singlefamily household, assessed at $648,000, jumped from $1,593 to $1,755, totalling a $162 hike.

Frank Hurt student earns trip to Vimy Ridge NEWTON — Tyson Fisher, a Grade 12 student at Frank Hurt Secondary, is one of 20 people in Canada to receive the 2016 Vimy Pilgrimage Award.

The award recognizes the actions of young people who demonstrate outstanding service, positive contributions, notable deeds, bravery or leadership.

Their support may have served their peers, schools, communities, province or country.

Tyson Fisher Tyson has long been a leader in various clubs and activities at Frank Hurt, including the Energy Ambassadors, community garden, year book and as a school/student liaison with community organizations.

As part of the award, Tyson receives a fullyfunded, week-long trip to Belgium and France to study Canada’s efforts during the First World War. The April tour, organized by The Vimy Foundation, includes daily field trips to key war sites.

‘Nashville Hurricane’ in Surrey

Portland-based actor and musician Chase Padgett is “The Nashville Hurricane,” a one-man show about a mysterious guitar-picker who once conquered the music world but eventually fell out of the spotlight. It’s “A Curious Tale of Fingerpickin’ Fury,” and the award-winning Padgett entertains in the roles of a manager, mother, mentor and the guitarist himself, the trailer-park-raised Henry Waltrip. The 75-minute production is staged Saturday night (Feb. 6) at Surrey Arts Centre, at Bear Creek Park. In a pre-Valentine’s concert, jazz music will fill North Delta’s Firehall Centre for the Arts this Saturday evening (Feb. 6). The 7:30 p.m. show will feature vocalist Linda Szentes + Jazzlinks, a band that includes the talents of pianist Roy Sluyter, trumpeter/ flugelhornist Terry Keller and bassist Johan Worst. Szentes is a versatile vocalist who not only sings jazz, she’s big into classical music as a member of Vancouver Cantata Singers and also the Surrey-based Lyric Singers. The fast-paced presentations – 20 images are shown for 20 seconds each, with dialogue – start at 7 p.m., with co-presentation by SFU Surrey and TD Community Engagement. Showcased will be some initiatives of SFU students in Surrey, such as growing veggie gardens in shopping carts (Gro-Cart) and also Racing Readers, a program that involves students at Newton Elementary.

volunteer hours as the production-management team. So of course, me being me, I had to ask: Why so many directors and stage managers? The concept was to give new people an opportunity to direct or stage-manage.

Learn what goes on.

How to do it. Helen Embury mentored the directors and Loryn LeGear mentored the stage managers. LeGear is still in her 20s and reveals that she has spent half her life with Surrey Little Theatre. That almost makes her the veteran of the group; 10 of the cast members are new to SLT, and some are even new to acting. What an experience to be part of a show that is already almost entirely sold-out, even with extra days added to the schedule.

The show is light, entertaining and funny – certainly worth the price of a ticket, if you can still get one. Seib sums it up nicely: “What you get is a whole lot of love and passion to bring you a couple hours of fun and laughter. We hope that everyone who comes to see the show will keep

spreading the love.”

Seib is one of the many people who love Surrey Little Theatre. She has served many years as president of the board of directors, designed and spearheaded the renovations, designs fantastic sets, paints and has even won awards as director. There are other people involved with SLT that also volunteer their time and talents to this small-sized (but big-hearted) community theatre. She is not alone in caring about the theatre.

Recent stories and columns in the Now have brought attention to a serious issue facing Surrey Little Theatre.

That is the widening of the road (184th Street), which would take away parking and access to the building. Eventually, a solution will be found, and it is important for the people making the decisions to understand that closing the building is not the solution. To stay viable, community theatre cannot rent civic theatres and warehouse space. They need their own building. There has been a groundswell of support for SLT – and it is all appreciated. President Mike Busswood says they have set up a

separate email address for people wanting to write in their support.

It never ceases to amaze me how often the decision-makers don’t have all the data they need to provide appropriate action. This is our opportunity to have a voice and put our collective foot forward.

And while we are helping community theatre, I do have to give a plug for the Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society (FVGSS). For 35 years this group has brought musical theatre to Surrey with G&S operettas and its annual Christmas-season pantomimes. They involve families in their productions and, just like Surrey Little Theatre, have a boatload of people who are passionate about presenting live theatre in our city.

Unlike SLT, however, the FVGSS do not have their own building for rehearsals and performances. The bill

for warehouse space, rehearsal space and ever-increasing theatre rent has nearly crippled this award-winning, non-profit group. Grants from gaming funds have remained static while costs have more than doubled. So right now, there will be no spring show. No “Anne of Green Gables,” no “Pirates of Penzance.” Tim Tucker – often doing duty as music director for the society – is hoping to put together a two-day concert featuring the favourites from past shows. That’s a lot of people who have performed in a lot of shows.

I am just in awe of people like this who not only keep a full-time day job, but probably spend every other waking moment immersed in a theatre project – as a volunteer. Daniels, along with Van Osch, won bronze at the 2014 Canadian Juniors in Liverpool, N.S. Daniels

said the experience of 2014 – she played second for Van Osch’s older sister Kalia – helped the B.C. team this year.

“Just playing on TV before has really given us that confidence to not be too camera-shy,” Daniels said prior to Team B.C.’s 7-3 win over Team New Brunswick in the

semifinals. “Big games? I’m just happy to be there, win or lose.”

The Tardi team includes third Daniel Wenzek, lead Nick Meister and Tyler’s brother Jordan. They are coached by Paul Tardi, father of Tyler and Jordan.

Paul said the mixed doubles discipline, which will be an Olympic medal sport in 2018, has made Tyler a better curler.

“It does change his approach, for sure,” said Paul Tardi. “I’ve seen him get into those mixed doubles ends where there’s a lot of clustering, and you get used to seeing a lot of funny angles. And he’s able to think far enough ahead that he can get teams into an end where they don’t realize they’re in trouble, and you can’t get out of those ends.

“He can call a terrific game if the team is executing the shots. But if you’re not? It can be real trouble; it’s a fine line there.”

een athletes from Surrey and Delta curled their way to some hardware at the 2016 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Stratford, Ont. North Delta skip Sarah Daniels, 16, and her older sister, lead Megan Daniels, scored silver medals with Team B.C., which fell 9-5 in the women’s final of the tournament Sunday (Jan. 31).

On the men’s side, Cloverdalebased skip Tyler Tardi, 17, and his older brother, second Jordan Tardi, earned bronze with Team B.C. on Saturday (Jan. 30) following an 8-3 semifinal loss to Team Manitoba, the eventual champions.

The action was televised on TSN. Daniels was named the tourney’s first-team all-star, as determined by shooting percentages during round-robin play.

“We’re all really proud of each

other,” Daniels said. “I know there will be tears because it sucks to lose, but we’re really happy for Mary’s team because they’ve worked so hard, and they’ve waited for this for so long. We’re just going to take away everything we can from this. We’ve learned so much from this competition, and we’ll push harder to get better next year.”

Daniels was backed by third Marika Van Osch, second Dezaray Hawes, her sister Megan and coach Katie Witt.

Tardi, meanwhile, is now preparing to curl in the Youth Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, from Feb. 12 to 21. On Team Canada he’ll join Nova Scotia’s Mary Fay and Karlee Burgess and fellow B.C. curler Sterling Middleton.

“It’s been 10 years, or something like that, since B.C. got on the podium in men’s (Tyrel Griffiths won silver in 2006),” said Tardi.

Anita Catherine Stanley (nee Potter) November 25, 1926 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; January 27, 2016

Anita passed away peacefully in her 89th year, with her family at her side at Peace Arch Hospital Wednesday evening. She will be lovingly remembered by all her friends and family, including husband of 66 years Emile, all of her children, Randolph, Stephen, Late Mark, Karen, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.

Anita was born in Montreal, Quebec, and lived in South Surrey for the past 36 years. For the past year she (and Emile) were resident at Rosemary Heights Retirement Home.

Always with a quick wit and sharp mind, Anita enjoyed a good party, entertaining family and friends for dinners, and chatting about world events. She loved to travel with Emile, brother Earle, and Jeff to England and Southern California.
