Local woman shares her journey from despair to hope Connie Brown’s Keep Breathing was written after she lost her son

T

he road of grief is different for everyone - and a City woman has chronicled her own experience with hopes of helping others navigate their own personal journey.

Connie Brown has penned Keep Breathing as a means of not only helping herself to work through her grief after losing her son Jon Lord, but also as a way to reach out to others.

“It was just devastating,” she said of her son’s sudden death in March of 2014.

“I had lost my parents and most of my siblings, so I knew about death.” But as many say, losing a child is unlike any kind of loss one could ever endure.

“You just don’t expect your children to die. It’s very, very hard. He and I were very close too, we would phone each other and tell each other jokes or some other oddball things that had happened that we wanted to share. It was very devastating.”

Lord died suddenly from a massive heart attack at his home in Calgary at the age of 57.

“I just got through the days, and they were terrible. I hated to wake up,” she recalls. “And I didn’t sleep very well.”

As to the book, the idea to write it came a few months following her son’s death.

In the first part of the book, she recalls a restless night.

“At last I was able to drop into a troubled sleep of exhaustion and after a while a dream came.

I heard a man’s voice, not Jon’s, say, ‘Enough: stop that whining and crying! People die, you know that. Accept it and get on with your life! Do something useful; your tears will not bring your son back. How about getting off your duff and writing a book about your road to healing? Your experience is unique, and you might be able to comfort someone else by recounting your special journey’.”

It’s filled with practical measures folks can take to find some solace in those seasons.

Brown said the dream was so vivid she sat bolt upright in bed. A new purpose had been sparked, and she was ready for the challenge.

She also started to think about what if Lord had never been born.

“We were lucky to have him for 57 years and we’ve got all of these memories. I also started thinking of other good things in my life, and that comforted me.”

To go back, Jonathan Joseph Brown was one of seven children born to the Browns. He opted for a name change in later years, and went on to study business administration and commerce at the University of Alberta, later establishing the popular Casablanca Video in Calgary.

He also opted to try his hand at politics, and was elected to Calgary’s City council in 1995 for two consecutive terms.

In 2001, Lord was the Progressive Conservative candidate for the district of CalgaryCurrie and was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly. By all accounts, he was a very successful man who had been extremely engaged on so many community levels.

“The days were lonely, sad and long but somehow, I knew that Hugh (her husband) and I would get through them as slowly we moved up the ladder to healing,” she writes. Through the book, Connie likens her journey through grief to the process of climbing a ladder - “From pain and hopelessness at the bottom to the top rung where one is able to function again; to a place of at least semi-healing.”

One of the first glimmers of hope came when Connie chose to have a sense of gratitude for the years the family had enjoyed with Jon. She started to see how restorative a sense of gratitude can really be. She and Hugh discussed this, and she said that dwelling on memories of happier times seemed to lift the family’s spirits as a whole.

Another rung in the ladder proved to be that of asking for help.

“You are not alone in this world - there are many people out there who are willing and happy to help you.” Those words stemmed from friends and family and her church family as well.

This can also serve to bring a sense of peace and fulfillment to someone in the grieving process as well, she said.

One of the final chapters in the book is entitled, ‘Hope, Faith and Healing’.

liefs in heaven, having been raised in the Christian tradition, have given her a profound sense of hope. “I take comfort in believing that I will join him after my death, and we will see and recognize each other. We are separated only for a time.”

Connie also points out that concepts in the book aren’t just about helping those who have lost a loved one. She wants to help those who have experienced any kind of loss, perhaps the end of a marriage to the loss of a much-loved job.

As to today, she and her husband keep busy with their extended family as well, careful to continually of course honour Lord’s memory along the way. As she explained, there is much to enjoy about life, from the little things to the major blessings that do come one’s way.

‘Operation Welcome to Canada’ launched by local Catholic division

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS Earlier this month, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS), along with the City of Red Deer, announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at helping Syrian refugees settle into their new lives in Canada.

RDCRS issued a statement urging residents to get involved in the project, which is called Operation Welcome to Canada, either through cash donations or by donating a shoe box full of items that the refugee families and children will need to make their transition as smooth as possible.

“I feel that it’s important to help out the refugees because, at the end of the day, they’re people just like all of us are and we just really need to take into account how would we want to be treated if the roles were reversed and would we want others to help us out?” said Kaitlyn

Borchers, a Grade 9 student at St. Francis of Assisi Middle School, who created the project.

Borchers decided she needed to take action on the issue after a conversation with her mother, who works at the school district.

“We were just talking about how it’s a very different environment for these children coming into Canada and then not really knowing what to expect. I felt that I wanted to help out in some way, shape or form and make their experience a little bit smoother and help them feel more welcome,” she said.

So she got together with Kathleen Finnigan, the associate superintendent of Inclusive Learning at RDCRS to get the ball rolling on the new project, which would be aimed at preparing schools in the division to receive these new students.

“I presented, along with many other teachers and people from the division, to over 90 administrators and

councillors and principals from each school in the Red Deer Catholic School Division. That meeting consisted of what to expect when these children come to your school,” she said, adding that presenting in front of that many educators and administrators was a nerve-wracking experience.

“I was quite scared but I knew if I got this out there that, at the end of the day, I’d be helping out these children. I had so much nerves going into that presentation but I just knew that it was for these little kids.”

According to Borchers, students within the schools are getting involved as well.

“Most of them, actually, are putting full shoe boxes together with their schools and they’re just kind of experiencing different ways to help out children,” she said, adding that part of the idea for the shoe boxes came from Operation Christmas Child, which Borchers contributed to last year.

“I know when I contributed with Operation Christmas Child, which is very close to Operation Welcome to Canada, I felt so amazing helping out little kids and I know that these kids are going to feel the same way about the Syrian refugees.”

Local agencies struggle as downturn continues

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS A reality is many agencies receive attention towards the end of the year, but struggle financially as they head into a new one.

For example, the agencies of Loaves and Fishes and the Red Deer Food Bank receive many donations in the holiday season, but both head into a much busier time as the New Year moves along.

“I think maybe the problem with the holiday season is that some people only tend to give at that time. It’s that spirit of giving that motivates people, and everyone wants to be a part of that.

However, they tend to forget about us after Christmas and our bills don’t stop then. Our obligations don’t stop and our programs don’t stop,” said Halina Jarvis, executive director of Loaves and Fishes.

“It’s important for us to make sure that people are aware that people are still in crisis, people still need housing and they still need food - all of that means we still need operational money to make it happen.”

With the current economic crisis, many families and citizens are still looking to not-for-profit agencies such as Loaves and Fishes as they continue to struggle. Loaves and Fishes provides crisis intervention that is needed all year long.

Operational costs and expenses are still high as they move into the late winter and spring months.

Jarvis said although they are extremely thankful for the Christmastime donations, they still require assistance.

“We so welcome Christmas because it’s such a big bonus for us and gives us some of the money that we can use for another half year or so.

“This year it was not as much giving, and we weren’t surprised by that with the economy. We were expecting a downturn and we got about half of what we’d normally get. This round of fundraising is very important for us, and we need to make it happen,” she said.

“I would say that all agencies are experiencing the same thing, the same downtrend and the same trepidation of how we’re going to make the rest of the year work,” she continued.

“You just have to make people aware

that we’re still in crisis, and people still need help. Kids still need to go to school and get their school lunches so we need to be able to keep that up. I really think (all non-profits) are in the same boat.”

Along the same lines of thought, Executive Director of the Red Deer Food Bank Fred Scaife, acknowledged the hardest part of the year is yet to come.

According to Scaife and a post made to facebook last month, almost 1,000 people walked through the Red Deer Food Bank doors seeking assistance within the first 10 days of January. That number went up 54% from last year’s need in the same time span.

“Our job is to make sure that these people get fed. We’re still not even in the busiest month of the year - February is usually the busiest month of the year,” Scaife said.

“We’re kind of in a perfect storm right now that makes this different than the last recession. We weathered that one pretty well. We had to do some interior modifications to our facility in order to face the numbers of people coming in, and we’re used to lots of people coming in.

“However, what’s happening right now is there is a downturn in the economy and the inflation of food is incredible.

All of those things are coming to bear on these families.”

These are only two examples of agencies in Red Deer that are seeking the help of the community to keep providing their regular services. With the current economic status, both executive directors acknowledged the difficulty of donating. At the same time, they each acknowledged the growing need in the community for these services.

“The amount of people we’re seeing is really unprecedented. I can’t say that enough. This is really uncharted waters in terms of our organization, but we’re trying to muddle through with what we’ve got,” Scaife said.

He added although donations of food and money are needed, the food bank is in dire need of volunteers. Jarvis stressed people are often great about bringing in items to the facility, but their greatest need lies in monetary donations for overhead costs of keeping the doors open and lights on. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Emergency wait times now online Real-time estimated emergency department (ED) wait times for Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre are now online.

Available on Alberta Health Services’ web site and mobile app, patients and the public can access wait times in the ED 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The wait times posted reflect an estimate of how long it takes from a patient’s assessment by a triage nurse in the emer-

gency department until they are seen by a physician. The times are calculated through a software system that uses current data from the facility that compares the number of people in the emergency department and how sick they are with how many resources are available and required to treat those patients.

This calculation does not take into account seriously ill patients, who will

be seen immediately, and patients with non-urgent concerns, who may wait longer to be seen depending on resources.

Wait times do not represent the total time patients may spend at the hospital.

Online estimated wait times were first posted for hospitals and urgent care centres in the Calgary in 2011, and then in Edmonton in June 2012.

OPINION Province seems to be listening to concerned Albertans Likely getting tired of the near constant barrage of criticism they’ve landed since taking office last spring, the Notley government finally took a step that seemed to please most camps yesterday with the announcement of the Petrochemicals Diversification Program.

Alberta has been way too dependent on oil resources for decades - it’s not a new idea by any means, but previous governments just didn’t seem to understand the urgency of developing other major streams of revenue for this province.

Officials say it will help to create jobs, attract investment and diversify the economy.

According to Monday’s announcement, the program, “Will encourage companies to invest in the development of new Alberta petrochemical facilities by providing royalty credits.

“The program is expected to support the construction of several petrochemical facilities that use methane or propane to produce the materials for products that include plastics, detergents and textiles.”

It is expected these facilities could create up to 3,000 new jobs during construction, as well as more than 1,000 jobs once

operation begins, and attract between $3 billion and $5 billion worth of investment, according to officials.

“This program builds on the royalty review panel’s recommendation for a value-added natural gas strategy to support further upgrading and production of higher-value energy products in Alberta.

This is another way to diversify our energy economy and create good jobs in Alberta.”

The province will award royalty credits to select petrochemical facilities through a competitive application process. The total amount of the program is $500 million.

Credits will be awarded once approved projects are completed and feedstock consumption begins.

While petrochemical facilities do not directly benefit from royalty credits, as they do not pay royalties, the credits earned by an approved facility can be traded or sold to an oil or natural gas producer.

This producer would use these credits to reduce their royalty payments to government.

Another plus for the province of late was last week’s announcement that the

NDP chose to adopt ‘restraint’ on royalties.

Royalty changes take effect in 2017 and only apply to new wells. The new framework will also maintain the existing royalty structures for 10 years on wells prior to 2017.

The panel took in more than 7,000 online responses, received 132 documents from stakeholders, held 65 stakeholder meetings across the province and reached 22,710 Albertans through a telephone town hall meeting.

Ahead of the review there was much discussion as to what Notley and her government would do.

On the heels of Bill 6, many were convinced Notley would make drastic changes to the royalty review but it appears she is listening to Albertans and is keeping the province’s economy top of mind.

The Wildrose were even quick to point out the positives, but were careful to mention that the panel ‘agreed’ with Wildrose’s position to provide stability in royalty rates for the energy sector. “l am grateful the panel agreed with Wildrose’s position to provide stability in royalty rates for our energy sector, and

that Premier Rachel Notley accepted,” Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said. “Our heart goes out to the Albertans who suffered job losses because of the instability caused by calling the royalty review. The next step is to recover from the damage done by this review and the series of poorly thought out policies that are harming our energy sector. Alberta needs to start seriously evaluating how to restore our competitiveness on the world stage.”

Jean pointed out that Alberta is becoming increasingly less competitive with other jurisdictions such as British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Pennsylvania and Texas.

With no change in the royalties, stakeholders say they have a more predictable environment now for them to work within.

Both of these announcements have received much praise from Albertans by in large.

The troubled economy is something that nearly every Albertan has felt in some capacity and announcements like these that provide stability in the market as well as new job creation are welcome.

Cauliflower hysteria offers lessons for Canadians Food inflation is top of mind for Canadian consumers, with rampant claims about produce being grossly overpriced.

CHARLEBOIS And the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report won’t calm Canadian shoppers any time soon, since food inflation stands at 4.1%.

That’s a significant contrast to the -0.4% in food inflation reported in the United States just a few

days ago. With global food prices dropping to record lows, the Canadian economy over the past few months is an industrialized world anomaly.

Food inflation remains substantially higher than our overall inflation rate, forcing many consumers to make budgetary compromises to pay grocery bills.

The dollar is obviously a major piece of the story, but it is just one piece.

Climate change, and in particular droughts in some parts of California, has given Canadian importers grief. California’s close proximity cuts shipping costs, while offering higher levels of freshness and quality, for imported products. Canada imports billions of agricultural goods every year from the

Golden State. However, farmgate price fluctuations have been unpredictable. Cauliflower prices have swung from $35 for a case of 12 to as high as $100 last November.

If products are unavailable in California or are too expensive, importers need to procure them elsewhere, even as far away as Europe. As a result, costs increase - for example, shipping costs can easily triple. Over the next few months, lettuce, strawberries, grapes, oranges, celery and, of course, cauliflower will likely be affected by broader influences.

These items will all likely cost more - if they can be found at all.

In fact, Canadians should expect more shortages on the retail shelves over the next few weeks,

and not because of limited supplies or diminished access. The recent cauliflower woes provide a lesson to Canadian food retailers on market-based hysteria.

The food market has become increasingly fickle, financially capricious and hypersensitive to price fluctuations.

After a few weeks of shocking cauliflower prices, the story got major traction and that pushed consumers away. So cauliflower prices dropped dramatically, to $2.50 a head and, in some parts of the country, to as low as $1 a head. At such prices, most retailers are likely selling cauliflower at a loss.

The dramatic shift was essentially created by retailers’ fears of being saddled with excess inventories. Perishables must

constantly move through the supply chain to reduce losses.

Importers and retailers know what the market can bear. A lower dollar and procurement challenges will most certainly push prices up in our market.

Given what happened to cauliflower, most retailers will think twice before importing a product that requires a much higher price to bring a decent profit. If retail prices are considered too high, importers may turn away from a product, creating shortages on supermarket shelves. So until things calm down, we shouldn’t be surprised to see retailers being more careful with their purchasing practices.

In the meantime, slumping oil prices may offer the silver lining Canadians

need to cope with higher grocery bills. Families with at least one car can save $1,000 to $1,500 a year on gas, based on current low prices. Since inflated food prices will cost the average family $345 more over the same period, lower pump prices will definitely help particularly in an economy in which wages are barely budging.

If that’s not enough, getting more acquainted with grocery stores freezers can help consumers get the nutrients they need until spring arrives. And then we can look to Canadian farmers to bring more freshness to our kitchen tables.

Hospital officials thank donor for ‘most wonderful gift’ As Christmas holidays got underway the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation received a most wonderful gift – one that ensured the joy of the season would be long lasting for all Central Albertans.

An anonymous donor (perhaps an angel!) unexpectedly gifted $750,000.00 for the purchase of five stress-test systems (treadmills) to replace old equipment, and the Red Deer Hospital’s first ever Transesophageal Echocardiography system (TEE). The donation came with a fountain of optimism for Central Zone staff and patients alike. The system will raise the quality of cardiac service, with the community seeing the most important benefit: more lives saved. The New Year starts fresh and optimistic for the Red Deer Hospital and the 450,000 residents of the Central Zone.

The new TEE system will aid echo and stress testing for patients with cardiac conditions that require more detailed analysis and tailored treatment. The TEE provides a specialized kind of close-monitoring and video recording of the heart,

taken from the esophagus; it allows doctors to picture the heart’s movement, check for blood health, see clots, and any harmful bodies or diseases in the circulatory system. Thanks to this revolutionary technology, and our donor’s willingness to directly help our community, patients will receive treatment close to home and immediately.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, internist at the Cardiology Unit, emphasizes its usefulness as, “A very important asset to the unit. It will improve diagnostic quality, allow for an effective management of the patient, and be a life-saving device.”

Singh explains that for patients with moderate to severe situations, the TEE will analyze the heart’s state in the most detailed manner. It will shorten diagnosis time, show the presence of arterial clots and further infections, assess valves for ruptures or leaks, and help prevent ‘cryptogenic’ stokes, which are sudden and of unknown origin. Further benefits include the elimination of x-rays for pregnant women, or patients already in weak health.

Family Day - what does it mean to you?

Other than my husband’s birthday and Valentine’s Day, when I think of special days during the month of February, I think of Family Day. This year in Canada it falls on Feb. 15th.

I think of this day as a reminder of how important family time is.

Of course, as with Valentine’s Day, if it’s the only day that you show love and togetherness, your actions may appear somewhat disingenuous. However, if you see this as an opportunity to put in extra effort to show how much you care, then your actions will appear more sincere.

The face of family has changed dramatically over the years. No longer is family conventionally defined by a mother, father and kids. Now, family takes on many shapes.

Not everyone is fortunate to be part of a family in which he or she feels secure, loved and supported.

For some, family has been a huge disappointment.

While some believe that family members should be revered and respected no matter how they act towards one another, others feel that blood is not always thicker than water and that the friends they have chosen to be part of their inner circle have become symbolic of the family they created themselves.

No matter who you choose to hang out with on Family Day, consider this an opportunity to focus on and show appreciation for one another.

Something that our family loves to do on Family Day is to bring out old photo albums and video tapes or DVDs of years gone by.

After going through my father’s belongings after he passed away a few months ago, and coming across old report cards he had kept of my mother’s, my plan is to show my kids some of my report cards and school projects from when I was a student.

I’m doing this especially because I wish I would have seen my mom’s school records before she passed so that I could have discussed them with her and asked her questions.

Enjoy a nice home cooked meal together, go out or order in if you’d prefer. While eating together, take the opportunity to voice out loud the top three things that you appreciate about one another.

Too often we think good thoughts about one another but don’t always express them out loud.

Put extra effort into turning off cell phones, computers and other forms of technology so that you can focus on one another. Play a board game, pull out the kids’ markers and create a family masterpiece on a large piece of paper. Maybe trace around each of your hands on a piece of paper as a keepsake.

In recent years, the TEE system might have helped one high profile patient who unfortunately succumbed to his illness.

American actor, John Ritter, fairly young, successful in the TV sphere, and acclaimed by fans for shows like Three’s Company and 8 Simple Rules, suffered a fatal aortic dissection (ruptured aorta). In 2003, when Ritter died, the disease was not as researched and cardiac equipment not as advanced. Detailed screening and photographic analysis, such as the TEE provides, will ensure more patients live to tell about their experiences.

Current wait times for patients needing screening range from two to four weeks, but a delay of even 24-48 hours can prove detrimental to a patient’s health. Often, patients are moved to other hospitals, either in Calgary or Edmonton, and this could greatly impact the state of their health, or create delays in treatment.

Installation of the TEE will ensure that immediate access to necessary screening is available for Central Zone patients.

Results of City’s survey released

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS According to the latest Citizen Satisfaction Survey, 97% of Red Deerians asked say the quality of life in the City is good or very good, with 28% saying their own quality of life has improved over the past three years.

Results of the survey, which was completed in December, were released Tuesday at City Hall.

“As you know, this annual survey gives us the opportunity to gauge citizen satisfaction and compare results from year to year,” said Mayor Tara Veer, adding that last year two surveys were completed, including one in the spring.

“The City did that because of several factors particularly because of changes in the economy, new programs and initiatives,” she said. The next survey, which has been run annually for the past decade, will be conducted in May. “We now have a full decade of comparable data,” she said. “The survey is just one tool that we use to measure whether or not we are meeting the expectations of our citizens and it also shows us where we need to focus and make improvements, allowing our council to be as responsive as possible to the needs and priorities identified.”

Survey results show that 88% of those asked felt they received good value for their tax dollars.

Twenty-eight per cent of respondents said things had improved, attributing a well-managed municipality, low crime rate, and improved roads as factors.

Forty-eight per cent of citizens said their quality of life remained the same in the past three years.

City Manager Craig Curtis said there is also a number of ways staff communicate with the community through the year as well. But the Citizen Satisfaction Survey, which is done independently, gives the overall impression of what citizens think of the services as a complete ‘basket’ of services which are delivered.

Fifty-six per cent of those asked said they agreed with an increase in taxes to maintain services at current levels, while

36% wanted services cut to stay at current tax levels or to reduce taxes.

Although a low crime rate contributed to a high quality of life in Red Deer, survey respondents stated that transportation and crime are the top-of-mind community issues that should continue to receive attention from community leaders.

“Our citizens’ top-of-mind priorities were addressed by City council during the 2016 operating budget deliberations, including investment in transportation improvements and the addition of six RCMP members in response to the priority Red Deerians have identified for public safety,” said Veer.

Transportation and municipal government services were also identified as top-of-mind priority issues that the City should address over the next year.

Roads were identified as the highest priority for residents in terms of infrastructure (80%), followed by recreation facilities (62%), water treatment facilities (55%), wastewater treatment facilities (42%), and the transit system (38%).

One area of noted improvement - 71% of respondents rated the current condition of roads as excellent or good, an increase from 58% in May 2015.

Veer said overall, it was clear that citizens were happy with the quality of life in the City. “It also helps to build council’s work plan and agenda because our citizens identify for us areas for improvements. So we will certainly factor those into our 2016 work plan.

She said holding 2015’s two surveys was a unique move to also help see what the seasonal differences would mean to citizens’ concerns. “Really, the citizens were consistent regardless of the season. They continued to identify those top three areas around public safety, transportation and core municipal services.”

The Citizen Satisfaction Survey was conducted over the phone by Ipsos between Dec. 3rd and Dec. 15th with a randomly selected sample of 300 Red Deer residents aged 18 years or older.

Officials work to address potential affordable housing crisis

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS This three-part series will examine the complexities of the current affordable housing shortage in Red Deer that has the potential to be an emerging crisis if it is not addressed.

Concern has been expressed by City officials over the potential affordable housing crisis in Red Deer.

“This is by virtue of the fact the City’s population is growing, the regional draw continues to grow and also because of the state of the economy, the scarcity of capital resources for new affordable housing starts and the sunset clause on capital retention policies on private affordable housing developments,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “We know we have an affordable housing shortage now. We have a window to exercise leadership to preempt and mitigate the effects of that. There is the potential of a housing crisis if we do not get ahead of the curve on those.”

Veer added the imminent need of this is the shortage of shelter space in the City.

Last fall, City council approved funding to provide more overnight shelter spaces at People’s Place. Council gave the green light to fund $45,427 which allowed Safe Harbour Society to add an extra 11 shelter spaces to the existing 35 beds. The funds cover a full-time staff position 12 hours a day/night, seven days a week from Nov. 1st to April 30th. Funding for this overnight component of the Winter Emergency Response is available through the province’s Outreach and Support Services grant administered by the City.

“Our community has always been very responsive. With the closure of Berachah Place it became clear when there was a gap in the services provided for vulner-

able citizens during cold, winter months, there was an expectation as the local order of government that we had an ethical responsibility to respond to the emergency need in the community,” she said, adding funding for such services is a provincial mandate.

“WE KNOW WE HAVE AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING SHORTAGE NOW. WE HAVE A WINDOW TO EXERCISE LEADERSHIP TO PREEMPT AND MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THAT. THERE IS THE POTENTIAL OF A HOUSING CRISIS IF WE DO NOT GET AHEAD OF THE CURVE ON THOSE.” TARA VEER

In 2014, the City partnered with a number of community agencies to provide an emergency temporary daytime warming shelter as a stop-gap measure. That temporary daytime warming shelter closed in April 2015.

“That centre was only intended for the winter months and upon that anticipated closure, it became clear there were substantial individuals at risk that it was serving. There was still an ethical responsibility to come up with an interim solution until the provincial government comes up with its made-in Red Deer

solution to resolve shelter space - both overnight and daytime shelter space,” said Veer. “We recognize there are agencies that need to be pulled together for that and there would be considerable planning and capital and operating dollar allocation which needs to occur. We recognize that it would likely take a couple of years to resolve the issue above and beyond a band-aid solution.”

To address this need in the meantime, the City has worked with local agencies to come up with another provision for a daytime warming shelter for the next two years.

Last fall, council approved the designation for a temporary daytime warming shelter which is located adjacent to Safe Harbour Society at 5246 53rd Ave. The centre is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City officials said between 60-90 individuals are seen at the temporary warming centre daily. Individuals using the service are connected with resources in the community and Alberta Works has put in some computers so people can get assistance doing a resume and searching for jobs or housing. There are also two overnight shelters in the community - one at People’s Place and one at Safe Harbour Society which caters to those who are intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.

“In recognition of the fact that shelter space is the direct service delivery mandate of the provincial government, council also passed resolution to submit the costs associated with that to the provincial government - that has since been done.”

In the meantime, included in the 2016 budget process was a council approval of

$100,000 to study shelter needs including a strategy to address medium and longterm shelter needs in the community.

These costs will also be submitted to the provincial government.

“It became apparent that our council and City administration wanted to move past temporary fixes and band-aid solutions. We wanted to address root issues and come up with a longer term sustainable solution for our community,” said Veer, adding that shelter space along the continuum of options is a gap in both the City’s plan and the province’s plan to end homelessness. “We certainly do not want to entrench people in shelter space.

The ultimate objective remains to move people up the continuum of housing from transitional housing to affordable housing and hopefully to market housing.”

The shelter needs study will look at long-term, sustainable options of shelter space in the City. The study will look at what the number of adequate overnight shelter spaces are needed in the City as well as location consolidation around services needed.

“As part of that, we probably need to take a look at our own 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness because we’re approaching the sunset of the original plan that was adopted. We’ll need to make updates to that plan soon anyways and a significant component will likely be to add safe and adequate shelter space,” said Veer, adding the City will be working with local agencies, stakeholders and the community at large to help respond to the shelter question once and for all. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

PERMIT VALUES IN 2015 SURPASSED 2014

Public sector construction led the way in building permit values for 2015, pushing the year’s $232 million total for all sectors past 2014’s $214 million total.

Public sector permits issued in 2015 were valued at $91 million, compared to $1 million in 2014. Industrial construction was also strong at $35 million for the year, but permits were still short of 2014’s values, as was the case in residential and commercial sectors. While values were down year-to-date, the number of permits issued in public, commercial and industrial sectors in 2015 exceeded 2014.

In December of 2015, there were three significant building permits. The first was the redevelopment of four residential suites in the Riverlands area. Also in Riverlands, a building permit was issued for a massage clinic. In the Golden West area, a permit was issued for a liquor store.

The winner of the contest will have the opportunity to professionally record their song at a local recording studio, retain the use of their professionally recorded song for personal and business needs, and also receive recognition for the song being used for the videos.

100 WOMEN WHO CARE UPDATE Organizers are pleased to announce that ‘100 + Women Who Care’ has become a real force in Red Deer fundraising.

In 2015, the first year, just over $82,200 was raised for four charities, at quarterly meetings.

Last month, passionate and sometimes emotional presentations were heard from Linda Wilson of The Leadership Centre, Kim Fox with ASPIRE Special Needs Resource Centre and Marnie Junck of the Suicide Information and Education Society.

The Red Deer Suicide Information and Education Centre was voted to receive the $100 donations of over 200 members.

‘100+Women Who Care’ is an organization dedicated to fundraising through only four meetings each year.

Charities may be nominated for funding by any member and three nominations are drawn at random for each meeting. The nominator gives a five minute presentation following which the membership votes on which charity

Reflections on the history of newspapers ARE YOU

On Jan. 29th, the Guelph Mercury, one of Canada’s oldest newspapers, published its last printed edition. The news was received with dismay, not only in Guelph, but across much of south western Ontario.

Moreover, given the many other closures and cutbacks seen across the nation in the past months, many are wondering if an end to the traditional daily newspaper in Canada is at hand.

While the developments the Guelph Mercury has attracted a fair bit of current national attention, what many likely do not realize is that there is a strong historical link between the Guelph paper and newspapers in Red Deer.

In November 1906, Francis W. Galbraith, a former part owner and editor of the Guelph Mercury, purchased the weekly Alberta Advocate in Red Deer. Almost immediately, he changed the name of the paper to the Red Deer Advocate. Over the succeeding decades, he laid the groundwork for what was to become Central Alberta’s leading daily.

However, Galbraith was not the only significant link between the Mercury in Guelph and the Advocate in Red Deer. Equally important to the success of the Advocate over the decades was his longtime friend and colleague from the Mercury, Fred Turnbull.

Turnbull joined the Advocate in 1907 and was both a part owner and the business manager in the firm for many decades after that.

Just before he died in March 1934, Galbraith wrote a series of autobiographical articles, which were posthumously published in the book, Fifty Years of Newspaper Work. It provides a fascinating insight into Galbraith’s life, but also half a century of history of the early Mercury and Advocate newspapers.

Galbraith began work for the Guelph Mercury in January 1884. Initially, he got a position as an unpaid apprentice. However, this soon turned into a full time, paid job at $8 per week. He was put in charge of circulation, before becoming a junior reporter.

Galbraith proved to be a very enthusiastic reporter, sometimes so enthusiastic that he got himself and the paper into trouble.

However, he was also a highly talented

DAWE writer of opinion pieces. Eventually, he was making $16 per week as an editor.

In 1898, Galbraith had saved enough money to buy a partnership in the Mercury.

He also became the paper’s senior editor.

However, in 1905, the Mercury found itself in need of significant investments in new printing equipment and other improvements. Galbraith did not have that kind of money. He therefore had to give up his partnership, but remained with the Mercury as a staff editor. In 1906, he moved to Red Deer to purchase the Advocate.

By his own admission, Galbraith was an excellent journalist and editor, but was not a particularly good businessman. In fact, the first set of pay cheques he issued as the new owner all bounced. Hence, shortly thereafter he asked Turnbull to join him.

Turnbull became the head of the printing department. In 1909, he became a full business partner.

Galbraith and Turnbull became a great team in building up the Advocate. In 1926, they were able to buy out the other weekly paper in the community, the Red Deer News.

After Galbraith’s retirement shortly before his death in 1934, his position as part owner of the Advocate was taken over by his son Philip Galbraith. That new business arrangement continued for 25 years.

In 1959, Phil and Turnbull decided that they did not have the financial resources to modernize the Advocate and to transform it into a daily newspaper. Hence the paper was sold to the Liverpool Echo, making it one of the few foreign owned dailies in Canada.

The move was controversial to some, but it reflected the changes necessitated by shifting economics and new technologies.

Moreover, the new editor who was brought in to the Advocate, Pat O’Callaghan, became one of the storied figures in Canadian journalism.

Chinese New Year celebrated at Hunting Hills showcase

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Staff and students of the Hunting Hills High School Mandarin Program are busy prepping for the annual Chinese New Year Celebration, set to run Feb. 11th at the school.

Complete with a banquet which includes sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mein, fried rice, beef and broccoli and spring rolls amongst other dishes, plus several performances including music, singing, drumming, dancing and drama, the popular community event, which has been put on for the past 15 years, is also featuring members from the Red Deer & District Chinese Community and the Red Deer Chinese Christian Church, said Sandy Cai, a language teacher at Hunting Hills. Packed with lots of colour, energy and artistic expression, it’s officially known as the Sounds of Spring Gala.

“I like the students to be involved so to learn more about the Chinese culture.

By being involved, they also develop their leadership skills. They also are being trained to contribute, to volunteer and to help people more as well,” she said. “So that is my number one goal.

“Second, I believe that the more you give, the more of a harvest you will gain.”

through the songs, and with the dramas it’s the same thing – they learn the culture. They not only learn ancient Chinese history and literature, it helps with their own language skills as well.”

It’s also something of a collaboration with the Red Deer & District Chinese Community Society, she said, in terms of sponsorship and the featuring of artists and musicians in the show as well. Last year, about 500 people attended, she said.

Meanwhile, Grade 12 student Tony Senesouma, 17, is enjoying being a part of bringing the event to fruition.

“All around, it’s just a whole cultural experience,” he said. “It’s a lot of work, but at the same time it doesn’t really feel like work because it’s a lot of fun.

“China has such unique aspects to it, so I’m hoping that people come in thinking this is going to be something unique and different from the western world. I hope they leave thinking, ‘That was more than what I expected’.”

Students and staff - not only from the mandarin program - have been collaborating on the event for the past several months.

“We start planning early on, but it’s about a month before it happens that things really kick into gear,” he said, adding that the preparations provide a bit of stress relief during

Oilfield Dads facebook group seeing continued success

BY JENNA SWAN COURTESY OF THE SYLVAN LAKE NEWS In just four short months, the facebook page titled ‘Oilfield Dads’ has journeyed from being merely an idea in one man’s mind to a collaborative community created and cultivated by one Sylvan Laker.

With nearly 6,500 members in the group, Chad Miller said he is blown away by the volume of members in the group and can’t believe the growth he has witnessed in such a short amount of time.

“I noticed oil was starting to go down. I have a lot of connections and credentials from working in the oilfield for so long but still it was starting to get pretty bleak,” remembers Miller of the time leading up to creation of Oilfield Dads. “I was sitting at home waiting for work and I figured I would start a facebook page, as a means of networking to see what’s going on out there.”

It quickly appeared there were many more men and women who identified with what Miller was posting to the page. He asked those who had joined the group to share their stories of their time working in the oilfield.

Men and women from across Canada began sharing their journeys, detailing the ups and downs of patch life.

Men told stories of months on end being away from their wives and children – missing years of their lives just to provide for them. Women told of long, lonely nights hoping their men were safe.

Given the time frame in which Miller started Oilfield Dads, many posts emerged of the hardships those in the oilfield were facing such as unemployment or working as a labourer to make ends meet after having spent years working as a foreman.

Others shared how they were grateful for not having been affected and sent out support to their oilfield brethren.

Miller said he tries to keep the group as positive as possible. He explained how he has spent hours of his life reading messages from members of the group.

“I’ve received so many messages saying how the group has helped people,” said Miller. “People say how they’ve been on the brink of disaster many times but always made it through – then you get the messages from people saying how their wives

and families have left them, they’ve been contemplating their lives, etc. and how the group has helped them through it.”

He tries to remind people to stay positive despite everything they have endured.

“I had one person say to me they’ve lost their truck, house, family, everything - I said to him that every morning I wake up and read a book for 30 minutes or listen to 30 minutes of audio on something positive,” he recalled of the conversation. “You can’t sit there all day and be miserable making the people around you miserable, you need to find something meaningful to help you carry on.

“It won’t help you get back everything you lost, but it has the power to help you change your mindset.”

It became quite clear to Miller how much the group meant to some of the members when they hosted an Oilfield Dads Christmas party – inviting all those who either had no where else to go, couldn’t afford to have their own dinner or who just wished to join them.

“To the people who came, I could see it in their faces it meant so much to them,” said Miller, who paid for the party using his own money from their savings.

Following the party, Miller knew he needed to do more to help promote the kinship of the group and has since launched a companion web site for the group, www. oilfielddads.com.

Currently the web site hosts Miller’s latest creation, a series of videos explaining what Oilfield Dads means to him and why he created it.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER STABBING Zared Trey Saddleback, 20, who was wanted on an Alberta-wide warrant since late October after a stabbing in an Oriole Park residence, has been arrested.

Maskwacis RCMP located Saddleback at a Maskwacis residence last Friday evening and took him into custody without incident.

Saddleback has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose and two counts of failing to comply with recognizance.

RCMP continue to look for Tara Lynn Lightning, 24, of Red Deer, who is also wanted on an Alberta-wide warrant for the same stabbing incident on Oct. 28th.

THEFT OF UNIQUE MACHINERY Red Deer RCMP are looking for public assistance to locate a one of a kind piece of machinery that was stolen from the yard of a local waste disposal company last week.

Surveillance footage shows that the theft occurred on Jan. 21st at 10:30 p.m. The suspect broke into a locked compound at Wasteco Disposal, located at 235 Spruce St., and stole a custom made waste disposal container that sits on the back of a waste truck.

The container is one of a kind and will therefore be easily recognizable; it is valued at approximately $30,000.

The Wasteco truck pictured here was not stolen, so the sus-

pect would have required a large truck in order to transport the container.

The investigation is ongoing, and RCMP ask anyone who sees this unique waste disposal container or who has information about this theft to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403343-5575.

MAN ARRESTED IN STOLEN VEHICLE Shortly after 9 a.m. on Jan. 24th, Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of a hit and run on the 67th St. bridge involving a stolen truck. With the assistance of the victim, RCMP located the suspect vehicle in a gas station parking lot on 76th St. and Gaetz Avenue.

The driver of the stolen truck accelerated into the driver’s side of a police cruiser that was blocking his exit, disabling the vehicle.

More RCMP members tracked the truck as it drove through the Normandeau and Kentwood neighbourhoods at slow speeds; the truck hit a parked vehicle on Kerr Close and a fence on Kingston Drive before driving into a green space behind Aspen Heights School and getting stuck in the snow. RCMP arrested the driver without further incident.

The truck, a Ford Expedition, had been stolen earlier the same morning from a Lancaster residence.

Justin David Milley, 20, of Red Deer has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, operation of motor vehicle while pursued by police, driving while disqualified/prohibited, theft over $5,000, four counts of failing to stop or remain at scene and assault on police officer with weapon.

ARMED ROBBERY AT A&W Red Deer RCMP are looking for the man who robbed an A&W Restaurant at gunpoint on Jan. 24th.

Shortly after 11 p.m. a man entered the A&W Restaurant located at 2004 50th Ave. carrying a handgun. He ordered the employees to the ground and demanded cash. Before leaving the restaurant, the suspect demanded employees’ cell phones and smashed them. He then took one employee’s vehicle keys, which were for a rental car, and fled in that car.

RCMP recovered the stolen rental car, a black Mitsubishi Lancer, on Jan. 26th in the Deer Park neighbourhood and are examining it for evidence.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 25- 30-years-old, between 5’9” – 5’10” tall with a medium build and approximately 170 lbs. He had dark hair and was wearing a ball cap, a blue and white bandana, a black jacket, dark blue jeans, and white and blue running shoes. He was carrying a blue backpack and a black handgun.

ARRESTS MADE AFTER TRUCK AND TRAILER RECOVERED On Jan. 27th, a stolen truck and RV trailer were recovered on a rural property south of Blackfalds. Blackfalds and Red Deer RCMP were investigating two stolen snowmobiles north of Red Deer. During the course of the investigation a truck and trailer came to the area. As the truck and trailer were trying to avoid police a tree was backed into which alerted an RCMP officer nearby.

The truck and trailer were followed to a dead end road where an altercation took place between the RCMP officer and driver. No serious injuries were sustained by anybody. Two individuals were arrested with the truck and trailer, and two additional persons were arrested after assistance was utilized from Police Dog Services.

The following persons were arrested and charged in relation to this incident and several other outstanding matters that they had before the courts.

Glen Wesley Primrose, 24, of Rumsey, Alberta has been charged with resisting arrest, possession of property obtained by crime, theft over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and four counts of breach recognizance.

Tracy Lynn Ozon, 25, of Red Deer is charged with resisting arrest, occupying a motor vehicle without the consent of the registered owner, theft over $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

Bryce Charles Bjerstedt, 23, of Red Deer, is charged with resisting arrest, occupying a motor vehicle without the consent of the registered owner and theft over $5,000.

ENTERTAINMENT RDC theatre studies presents Shakespeare’s The Tempest

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer College theatre students are excited to be staging one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, The Tempest, with some fascinating new interpretive twists.

Directed by Thomas Usher, The Tempest is considered one of Shakespeare’s greatest works.

According to a synopsis - neither tragedy, nor comedy, the play is sometimes classified as, “A romance because of its concentration on family, reconciliation and the divine power of mercy to end conflict.”

“WE WANT TO BRING THE WORK TO LIFE IN A NEW AND ENGAGING WAY.” THOMAS USHER Cast away on an enchanted isle, the once powerful Prospero struggles to raise his daughter Miranda in this new world.

Together with the mythical inhabitants of the island, he uses the magic he has studied to raise a storm and wreak havoc upon his oppressors.

“Monsters, lovers, shipwrecked fools and airy spirits confound each other as worlds collide. In the end, can Prospero discover how to become a benevolent benefactor of those he has oppressed? Humility and the power of love transcend vengeance and hatred, showing us that together we can create a better humanity and that, ‘We are such stuff that dreams are made of’.”

Performances run on the Arts Centre mainstage Feb. 4th-6th and 10th-13th with curtain at 7:30 p.m. There are also weekend matinees Feb. 6th and 13th at 1 p.m.

“The play has been likened to his reflection on the world of theatre,” explained Usher

of Shakespeare. “Prospero, the main character, is often considered an extension of the playwright also,” he said, adding Prospero controls his world much like actors and playwrights ‘control’ their worlds on the stage. “That said, we’ve taken a bit of a departure from that to make it more resonate with our audiences here. We want to bring the work to life in a new and engaging way.”

Usher said the plan was to explore elements of The Tempest and try and see where it also resonates with the contemporary world.

“Not just in terms of setting, but also in terms of the messages of oppression and release that are talked about as well.”

Usher drew inspiration from some of Canada’s own west coast native culture - mainly the people of Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) - and some of the artistry and rich heritage that has flourished there as well.

As mentioned, the story’s main character Prospero is a usurper, although he’s also been usurped from his own throne in Milan.

“He’s been thrust upon an island where he becomes leader and in many ways usurps the other authorities which are there which are the inhabitants themselves,” said Usher. “One of the deeper messages is that Prospero has also gone through betrayals in his past. So he holds to this vendetta, this grudge against those who did him wrong years ago.

And when they come by chance within his grasp, he has to make a choice about how to deal with it - how to do what is just and what is right to those who had punished him so badly.

“And that’s where the twist of fate comes in - he has a bit of an epiphany part way through and realizes that he’s doing the same thing - he’s being oppressive to the people in this new land; he’s using his power in unjust ways.

So in order for him to move past his hurt and his betrayal, he actually has to forgive others who betrayed him, too.

As for the set, Usher said only a portion of mainstage will be used as a way to enhance that sense of isolation.

“We’ve tried to create within in our own little world an eye on isolation itself,” he said, pointing out the drama unfolds on an island that the characters can’t escape from until the end of the play. “In terms of the look, we’ve tried to capture that flavour of isolation and the flavour of the

west coast. “(Designer) Carrie Hamilton and I have sat down and done research on that type of culture, and we also looked at some of the visual aspects of artist Emily Carr’s paintings of that world at the turn of the last century.

“We also brought in Reg Davidson who is a Haida elder to work with our students for a couple of days.” It proved a rich experience for the students, who learned much about the traditions of that culture and what the students could use and honour along the way, said Usher.

Notre Dame presents classic Mary Poppins

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Drama students at Notre Dame High School are staging a classic with Mary Poppins - the production runs Feb. 11th to 13th at the Memorial Centre.

Evening shows are at 7 p.m. and there is a matinee performance as well on Feb. 13th at 1 p.m.

Mary Poppins is the lead character in a series of eight children’s books written by P. L. Travers. They focus on an English nanny who is blown by the east wind to 17, Cherry Tree Lane, London and, “Into the Banks’s household to care for their children.

Encounters with chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and various adventures follow.”

The books were adapted

by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The first title was published in 1934.

In 2004, Disney Theatrical, in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh produced a stage musical also called Mary Poppins in the West End theatre.

The stage musical was transferred to Broadway in 2006, where it ran until its closing on March 3, 2013.

Another chapter in the story came about last year with the release of Saving Mr. Banks which focused on the story of Travers herself, and her at times reluctant collaboration with Disney over making a film out of the beloved books.

The story has remained enormously popular around the world, said Jennifer Cocolicchio, performing arts teacher at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School, and those universal themes

of family and belonging helped make it an appealing option for the school to stage this winter.

In building her own vision for the production, Cocolicchio said she started essentially at the beginning by reading the books.

“I did research into where the story came from, and what kind of originated before the movie as well because it actually goes back quite a bit before that with P.L. Travers,” she explained. “So I also learned about her and about where

the story kind of came from, and about her life.”

The musical version is different from the film as well. “They’ve added new songs, taken out others, and changed the order of the scenes,” she said.

As to the enormously, even iconic film, Cocolicchio said that while it’s good to pay homage to the creative minds that went before, it’s also something of a group effort amongst the creative team at Notre Dame High School.

“More people come into the mix, and we start talking about set design and other things - it continues to change and everybody has a creative hand in what it ends up becoming,” she said, adding that the cast itself numbers 40 students.

Meanwhile, the version she chose for the students is a relatively new interpretation.

“It has a huge ensemble in it which is great for our school because we have a huge musical theatre pro-

gram,” she said. “It’s great when you can find a show that features so many people because there is so much talent amongst our students.” The students have also tackled taking on English accents to add that touch of authenticity to the production.

Overall, it’s been a delightful experience from the start.

“I’ve also really enjoyed the choreography to this show - it has a lot of dancing in it which not all musicals have,” she said.

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Ecole Secondaire Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School students are gearing up to showcase Winnie-the-Pooh - a musical comedy in two acts.

Penned by A.A. Milne with lyrics by Milne and Kristin Sergel, music by Allan Jay Friedman with the book by Sergel as well, the production runs Feb. 5th-7th and Feb. 10th-13th in the school’s drama studio. The show is being directed and produced by LTCHS instructor Trina Penner.

Curtain is at 7 p.m. Also, on Feb. 6th-7th and Feb. 13th there are performances at 1:30 p.m. as well.

Altogether, 35 musical theatre and technical theatre students are involved in the production and that includes the members in the band.

“I had lots of folks email me when we announced we were doing this play - some wanted to make sure Eeyore was in it because he was their favourite for example,” said Penner with a chuckle. With such a beloved and classic story, audiences certainly have their ideas of how they’d like to see it unfold onstage.

Penner is assured that folks won’t be disappointed. “If you are familiar with the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, you will literally see the stories come to life onstage.

“It’s a classic tale, and I also wanted to do something really family-friendly,” said Penner, adding the production is based on series of Milne’s stories and poetry.

“There is also a really strong

Canadian connection which I think people forget about sometimes,” she added. “When we talk about theatre and literature, I think it’s really important that we have those Canadian connections, too. A lot of times we look south of the border, and that’s our go-to. But we’ve got some strong roots here that we can draw from.”

According to HistoricaCanada. ca, “Few Canadian black bears have achieved the literary renown of ‘Winnipeg’, Captain Harry Colebourn’s pet black bear.

“Winnipeg emigrated to Britain along with her owner, Captain Harry Colebourn, an army veterinary surgeon in the Canadian military. In 1915, as World War I raged, Captain Colebourn was sent to the front in France. Unable to take Winnipeg along, he donated her to the London Zoo, where she quickly became a star attraction.

Colebourn had purchased Winnipeg in White River, Ontario from a trapper who had killed the cub’s mother.

Penner added the bear, once settled in London, was spotted by young Christopher Robin and his father, A.A. Milne.

The web site adds that, “Captivated

by Winnipeg, who gave zoo patrons piggyback rides around the zoo and ate treats from their hands, Christopher Robin urged his father to take her home.”

Instead, Milne transformed Winnipeg into the hero of a classic childhood story, Winnie-the-Pooh.

“This unusual name is a combina-

tion of the nickname London zoo patrons gave Winnipeg, and the name of Christopher Robin’s pet swan, Pooh.”

The wonderfully imaginative stories penned by Milne describe the explorations of a bear named Winnie-the-Pooh accompanied by fussy Rabbit, gloomy donkey Eeyore, bouncy tiger Tigger, kind kangaroo Kanga and her baby Roo, wise Owl and shy Piglet. Winnie-the-Pooh was written in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner was released in 1928.

These two volumes told the adventures of a young boy named Christopher Robin, after Milne’s own son (Christopher Robin Milne), and his animal playmates, who were inspired by the real Christopher Robin’s stuffed toys.

As for the production at LTCHS, Penner said there are about six musical numbers woven into the script.

Bringing it to fruition has brought plenty of inspiration in seeing the students really make it their own delving into the uniqueness of the story itself and the layers of history behind the Canadian connection as well.

“I had a lot of kids asking, ‘Is it okay if I try this?’ I would say try it.

If it doesn’t work we will know that’s not the way we want to go, so we will have to figure out another way.”

“Winnie-the-Pooh has a little bit of everything,” said Penner. “It’s good for ages one to 100.”

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, four gentlemen will sing two love songs, present a rose and special picture memento all in four-part a cappella harmony for just $40 or $45 for out of town visits in the Red Deer area.

“We have been doing this for at least the last 20 years,” said David Crozier-Smith, who is a member of the Harmonizers.

Several quartets will out and about, popping up across Red Deer and area on Feb. 12th and Feb. 13th.

guys are game to show up at homes, hospitals, seniors’ homes, job sites, restaurants and banks – you name it. It’s always a load of fun, with reactions ranging from tears to just a touch of embarrassment.

“One of the things we enjoy about the singing Valentines is the reactions that we get from the recipients,” explained Crozier-Smith. “We get so many different reactions - everything from tears of joy and excitement to sometimes some people are annoyed that someone sent a Valentine. But in the end there is always a smile on the face and a thank you.

“It’s such a unique way of saying ‘I love you’ and of bringing that message to a special person.” It’s not just for the la-

Crozier-Smith said it’s all about the joy of singing and of sharing it with the community.

“We have a good time together – it’s almost like a little family,” he said.

“And singing is such a great

way of expressing emotion, and bringing emotion out of other people whether it’s enjoyment or whatever it might be. That’s what I really find is the best thing about it – the enjoyment we bring to other people.”

A double-barrelled package to treat hypertension Today millions of North Americans suffer hypertension and 99% are being treated by prescription drugs.

Studies show that nearly 50% discontinue their medication due to unpleasant side-effects. But tossing away drugs is a hazardous move which can result in earlier death.

But since we cannot choose our parents many people, as they age, develop atherosclerosis (clogged, hardened arteries), the big killer.

Good sense tells us that if water pipes in our homes are clogged, the pressure affects the entire house.

JONES Similarly, the constant pounding from increased blood pressure on all our arteries and organs results in a host of problems, coronary attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputation of legs.

So what can a double-barrelled approach do to prevent this major killer?

Dr. Nathan S. Bryan, at the University of Texas, says that for 100 years researchers have known that nitroglycerine eased angina heart pain by increasing the blood supply to the heartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s muscle.

But it was a mystery how this happened. Then researchers discovered the miracle molecule of nitric oxide (NO). They were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998.

Early in life we all produce large amounts of NO in the endothelial lining (the innermost lining of blood vessels). This keeps arteries expanded.

But after age 40 the production of NO decreases, arteries constrict causing hypertension. This constant pressure injures the endothelium and triggers a chemical and inflammatory reaction that kills one North American every 37 seconds.

A natural remedy, Neo40, is now available.

It sends a message in nanoseconds to endothelial cells to start producing nitric oxide. Dr. Bryan reports some people take L-arginine to produce NO. But Neo40 is more effective since it contains Lâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; citrulline, Vitamin C, beet root and hawthorne.

Influenza data prompts immunization reminder Following confirmation of five deaths in individuals with influenza and a significant week-overweek increase in reported hospitalizations, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Health (AH) are reminding all Albertans who have not yet been immunized against influenza to get immunized promptly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Influenza is here in Alberta and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now seeing its tragic toll. Iconic outdoor hockey tournament a success

Those Saturday morning pickup games on the outdoor rink can create memories that last a lifetime for many Canadians young and old. But what would happen if someone were to take that concept to a whole new level?

“I was driving on the highway and just started thinking of some ideas and my thoughts turned to the NHL Winter Classic. I just said ‘let’s do that here in town,’” said Al Sim, whose Tommy Gun’s Outdoor Winter Classic wrapped up its sixth successful tournament this past weekend.

The outdoor Midget B hockey tournament, he said, was started in order to give some lower level midget hockey players a chance to finish their minor hockey careers on a high note.

“These kids, they’re playing at the Midget B level, typically they don’t get all the nice things or the accolades that the Midget AAs or AAAs get, so I wanted to

create a cool environment and give these kids something that they’ll talk about for the rest of their lives.”

Last weekend’s tournament, which ran from Friday through Sunday at the Bower Community Rinks, featured eight teams, four from Red Deer and four from around the province.

As in previous Winter Classics, the teams were all decked out in old style NHL jerseys, which this year were themed around the late 1980s.

“For the kids that come, we tell them to leave their minor hockey jerseys and socks at home and each of these sets of uniforms are sponsored. They put the names on the back of the jerseys and then the kids get to keep them at the end of the tournament,” Sim said of the retro-style that the event sports.

“Every year we kind of keep it under wraps, what our theme is and when the kids open their dressing room they’re just in awe. It’s funny because every dressing room door that gets opened, every kid and every manager thinks they’ve got the best jersey for the tournament.”

Deer Devils, Red Deer Kings, Foremost Northstars and Kneehill Capitals in the East and the Red Deer Canucks, Red Deer Flyers, Calgary Sabers and Spruce Grove Penguins in the West.

“It was really tight, actually. The competition was really close. We had lots of ties and one goal games, there was only one that was a little bit of a bigger score. Other than that it could have been anybody’s tournament,” Sim said.

In the end, though, it was the Spruce Grove Penguins that came out on top, winning the OWC championship.

In addition to the Midget hockey, the festival-like event also features some fun Novice level games, that come in the form of the 1972 Canada Cup. “It was our third year doing the Summit Series, so we take the Team Canada and the Russian CCCP Cold War-era jerseys and we put the 1987 rosters, the numbers and names, on the back of the jerseys.

The lengths that Sim and the rest of the organizers go to in order to make the experience as authentic as possible are really impressive. For example, anthem singer Brett LaBrosse will only sing the national anthems of the teams that are playing.

“If it’s a U.S. team playing a Canadian team he’ll do both and if it’s just the U.S. playing then that only gets sung. Flags are flying and it’s awesome,” Sim said, adding LaBrosse has even learned the Russian anthem for the Summit Series games.

It’s a pretty special event and, according to Sim, it has always been really well received by the teams that play in it.

“It’s our version of the NHL to these kids and once their bus or their vehicle rolls in they see that it’s just an NHL experience.

It’s cool.”

Sim added he wanted to thank the tournament’s sponsors and volunteers for all of their support in putting together the unique event.

“It’s almost like a city within a city. It’s this festival that we created.”

Generals clinch first place, prepare for playoffs

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS The Bentley Generals are once again the top team in the Chinook Hockey League heading into the playoffs.

The Gens locked up the regular season crown for the fourth year in a row this past weekend after defeating the second-place Stony Plain Eagles in Lacombe on Friday night before defeating the Eagles again on Saturday to finish off a stellar 2015-16 regular season.

“That’s what you try to do, right? You set out goals, you finish first, you want to win the province and then give yourself a chance to win the Allan Cup,” said Generals’ Head Coach Ryan Tobler after Friday night’s game.

Over 1,000 people packed into the Barnett Arenas in Lacombe last Friday evening to see the two top teams in the ChHL go toe-to-toe.

Stony Plain trailed the Generals by just six points and had a game in hand going into the weekend’s home-and-home set, but Bentley held a heavy lead in goal differential, which would decide the first place team in the event of a tie in the standings.

Nevertheless, Friday night’s game was a battle for the ages.

“It’s setting the tone, you know?

Playoffs are around the corner for both teams, so I thought it

was a good hockey game,” Tobler said. In fact it may have been one of the most highly-contested games of the year. The teams were dead evenly matched through the entire game but in the end the Generals claimed a 2-1 victory thanks to some third-period heroics and good, physical play.

Bentley got off to a flying start in the first period, possessing the puck well and creating a couple of good scoring chances.

Stony Plain was without former NHL All Star Ryan Smyth, who joined the team last week but was unable to make either game this weekend.

The game stayed in a scoreless tie with the teams going shot for shot until eight minutes into the first frame, when the Eagles managed to get past Generals’ goaltender Dustin Butler to take a 1-0 lead.

Despite some good forechecking and some excellent chances through the rest of the first and first half of the second, Bentley couldn’t solve Stony Plain’s defense, who were laying some punishing checks on the Army’s offense.

But they couldn’t keep Bentley out forever and, at the seven minute mark of the second, they managed to tie it up thanks to an absolute blast from Graeme Craig. The score would remain tied at one by the end of the

Shawnee Harle addresses local athletes at RDC

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS A national-level basketball coach was in Red Deer recently to speak about her personal philosophy.

Shawnee Harle, an assistant coach for Canada’s National Women’s Basketball team, addressed a crowd of about 75 people in the Margaret Parsons Theatre at Red Deer College recently.

During her two hour long speech, Harle spoke about her personal coaching philosophy as well as how she approaches the job.

“Every problem has a solution. Your problems are not unique, they are not

special,” Harle said during her talk, which focused on how competition in sport can teach life lessons and develop character.

Harle’s philosophy revolves around being a “Jungle tiger,” she said. The idea behind her metaphor is that if athletes are coddled by their coaches they become ‘zoo tigers’ that aren’t able to fend for themselves in the ‘wild’ of competitive sport.

“It’s obvious. If you put a zoo tiger in the jungle, that tiger would die beacuse it doesn’t know how to take care of itself,” said Harle, whose Canadian Women’s team recently qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics with their win at the FIBA Americas tournament. She was also the

head coach of the University of Calgary Women’s basketball team for 18 years.

“I believe that sport is the jungle. If that is true, why do we spend so much time training our athletes in the zoo?” she said.

According to Harle, many athletes are bombarded with coaching tips and guidance throughout their careers and that bombardment can create athletes that are dependent on that support to the point where they can’t make their own decisions.

“In the zoo there are no decisions because the zoo is predictable and the zoo is safe. The jungle is completely unpredictable because you never know what’s going to happen, you never know what’s

coming.” Harle encouraged coaches to train their teams more in the jungle than in the zoo.

She also spent a lot of time talking about how sport, like life, is not fair.

“If we can figure this concept out, we can get our kids and our athletes not just ready for the game, but ready for life.”

When she’s not coaching, Harle spends her time doing talks like the one she recently gave at RDC.. She gives her talk, which she calls Winning Matters, to businesses and sports teams all over the country. Too much of a good thing can be detrimental There is the phenomenon known as too much of a good thing.

While one item can be the perfect accent piece or the perfect bite to satisfy a craving yet too many of these items and suddenly it’s overdone and not desirable.

I have a box of coconut Turtles sitting on my coffee table because, even though I love Turtles, these are too sweet and after two bites they are just not enjoyable at all.

It makes me sad looking at them knowing that I won’t eat them when a normal box of Turtles would have been consumed before New Years!

Having seen many homes over the years I am sometimes taken aback at too much of a good thing.

Design is meant to be stunning and beautiful but also functional and I think that people often get ahead of themselves when working on their homes.

I have often worked with clients who

While tile is beautiful and very fun to design, be careful when choosing your tile story.

It is easy to be transfixed by the glitter and the glass but keep in mind that tile is a very permanent fixture and is difficult to replace. Make sure tile is timeless and beautiful and something you will want to look at for years to come.

It is important to choose tile with subtle patterns or use bolder patterns in smaller quantities to keep the tile from overpowering the space. If a little is good, more must be better – right?

It isn’t necessary to buy ALL the pieces of furniture in a collection. Be careful to choose furniture that is to scale with the room you are putting it in and watch for styles which compliment each other, not just the colours or fabrics.

Arm styles, leg shapes and colours are all important when choosing furniture and vital to making them well co-ordinated. Try to not overstuff your room with furniture or it will look congested and small.

Go easy when it comes to design, easy on the fabulous points and easy on colours and co-ordinating products. Too much of a good thing can be can be detrimental if you aren’t careful with your choices.

So your mortgage lender has approved the documentation you have provided and you are having a look at the paperwork in front of you before you sign on the dotted line.

A few great questions to ask are: • What are the pre-payment privileges on my mortgage and do I have to wait for the first anniversary to make the extra payments?

• Is my mortgage portable across the country and to a wide variety of properties? How long do I have to port this mortgage? Porting is where you can take the mortgage from one house to another without penalty. Some lenders do not lend on rural properties for example and so if an acreage is in your future then you want to make sure yours does. Other

lenders require the port to happen on the same day which can be tricky to navigate.

• How are the prepayment penalties calculated? In Canada, there is no rule about how a lender has to calculate this number. I have seen them vary from $3,000 to $18,000 on the exact same mortgage amount with the only difference being the lender. Life happens and you want to make sure that if you have to break your mortgage that it will not cost you all your hard-earned equity.

And now that you have asked your questions and met all the conditions you are off to the lawyer for the final signing.

There are a few costs you need to anticipate: • Mortgage insurance - if you are purchasing a home with less than 20% down you will have to pay this which is based on a set percentage of the purchase price depending how much you are putting down and is added to the mortgage.

• Legal fees – the lawyer will have to complete the final paperwork and register the mortgage for you and this can cost up to $1,750.

• Title insurance – many lenders now require this in lieu of an RPR. The cost is about $250 and will be collected at the lawyer’s office.
