Protect yourself from identity theft Many people become victims of identity theft every year. It is impossible to prevent identity theft completely, but we can reduce the risks. Swindlers use the telephone, e-mail, fax, and even the regular mail to achieve their goals. Be on your guard any time you are asked for personal information, such as your name, birthdate, address, social insurance number, credit card number, or any other private information. Be cautious, ask questions, and do some research before divulging anything, especially if you didn’t initiate the contact. Your personal identification number (PIN) should never be divulged for any reason. Think about changing the PIN for your

credit or debit card on a regular basis. Above all, don’t use your date of birth for your PIN. And all documents containing personal or financial information, such as bills and bank and credit card statements, should be thoroughly shredded before they are put in the garbage or recycling. Social networks are particularly attractive to swindlers. Your new “friends” may not be as they appear. The fewer details you give about your private life, the better. Never give your telephone number or address through a social network. If you have to give personal information on the Internet, such as for the purchase of something, ensure that the site is secure. Verify that the “https://” is still present in the URL and look for the padlock icons that promise a secure Internet transaction.

Tenants, protect yourselves! Have you ever tried to calculate what it would cost you to replace all your belongings at once? Think of your furniture, appliances, clothing, dishes, jewellery, and computer. It doesn’t take long to realize that it all adds up, even if your belongings are relatively inexpensive. But being a victim of theft, fire, or vandalism doesn’t just happen to other people. That is why it is so important to be well protected with insurance, even if you live in a small apartment. Taking out tenant insurance is not a luxury, whether you live alone, with a partner, or as a family. Imagine what would happen if your neighbour accidentally set fire to his apartment and it then spread to the entire building. Without insurance you would not only find yourself in the street but you would probably have to use all your savings to replace your belongings.

It doesn’t end there. Now imagine that the fire that damaged the building was not the neighbour’s fault but was caused by your defective microwave oven. Your problems would be just beginning if you didn’t have insurance. In some places your status as a tenant means that you are legally responsible for the damage you cause to the building as well as to the other tenants. It would be truly crippling to be sued for damages. Home insurance for tenants costs just a few dollars a month. If you combine your vehicle insurance with your tenant insurance you will save even more money, as most insurance companies will reduce premiums for this type of combination.

February 2016 Capital News

Who does the budgeting in your home? Even in the age of gender equality, not much has changed concerning the family wallet: most household budgets are still managed by and worried over by the woman of the house. According to a recent survey carried out by the company Financial Finesse, women worry more then men about not having enough money to maintain their household. Of those questioned in the survey, one woman in three suffered from high levels of stress regarding finances, the family budget, and providing for their children. Less than one man in five voiced such a level of concern. Three times more women than men reported feeling a crushing level of stress regarding household

finances. Indeed, in general, male respondents expressed that they felt particularly confident. If the survey is to be believed, a great financial stereotype persists: half the women questioned believe that a man should have a higher salary than a woman. Nevertheless, personal income remains the symbol of liberty and personal affirmation within a couple. One woman in two felt that for a woman living with a male partner, her earnings were the way for her to enjoy a sense of independence. Only 43 percent of men thought that money represents independence for women.

Are debit cards getting us into debt? According to statistics that date from last June, the level of debt in Canadian households reached almost 150 percent of available income. Your available income is your gross income, from which both federal and provincial income taxes have been deducted. If you are one such indebted household, here are a few reflections that might help you regulate your spending.

HINKSTOCK

People often point fingers at credit cards as the major cause of their debt woes. But did you know that debit cards can also be instruments of debt? Practical and easy to use, debit cards allow us to pay with “cash” practically everywhere we go without having to carry around large sums of money. But there is a flipside to this coin: unlike when we have the visual of a quickly reducing stack of bills, debit card money flies

out of our bank accounts with barely any notice. Debit cards can trick us into thinking that we’re smart enough to dodge the high interest charges of credit cards, but they don’t protect us from the impulse to splurge on things we can’t cover with the bill-fold. If you are a diehard fan of debit cards, try this experiment the next time you purchase an expensive item: prepare to pay with cash. Seeing all those bills leaving your wallet with your own eyes will give you a much clearer idea of the amount you’re about to spend. This simple experiment can be very convincing, especially for compulsive — or impulsive — buyers. Of course, debit cards can be indispensable tools on occasions when you don’t want to carry large amounts of cash. It all depends on how they are used.

Insurance and animals: love in an official language Health insurance for pets gives cat and dog owners a way to lavish them with the best possible health care. If Daisy and Sam became ill, they would have to be cared for immediately. If you don’t have insurance to cover some of that care, it could turn out to be both a very painful and very costly experience. A cat may well have seven lives, and a dog may be man’s best friend, but either one is nonetheless vulnerable to hereditary illnesses, cancer, diabetes, or hip dysplasia. Insurance companies have studied such risks and have developed health guarantees that will cover veterinary expenses incurred due to certain illnesses or accidents. Pet owners simply choose the extent of the coverage that suits them;

depending on the degree of protection, insurers can reimburse up to 80 percent of care costs and veterinarian services. X-rays, hospitalization, surgery, and even medications required in case of illness or an accident are normally included. On a different note, insurance for domestic animals can also cover the damage caused by them. It’s not only illness or an accident that can be expensive: behavioural problems can also cause financial worries, as the owner is always responsible when an animal causes damage. More and more municipalities are requiring their citizens to have this type of insurance in order to use dog parks. Be sure to find out if this applies to you!

Don’t throw them out! People should keep all pertinent financial documents, receipts, and statements for as long as there is a possibility that tax authorities could propose an audit. Unless you want the federal or provincial tax bureaus to do their own re-assessments without any substantiating documents from your files, you should be able to supply all documentation immediately upon request.

PHOTO: BANANASTOCK / THINKSTOCK

If these documents are digitalized, you must be able to print them at any time. If you can’t supply the required receipts or supporting documents, you could end up with a refusal of credit, changes to deductions that you had earlier claimed, or delay in the treatment of your current tax return. Governments can issue an adjusted assessment to individuals in the three-year period following the date of the first notice of assessment for a given year. There is no time limit if a declaration was never filed or if there is suspicion of fraud. Selfemployed people are required to keep all their documents and records for a period of six years. This time period also applies to all taxpayers who wish to submit

a request for supplementary deductions following the initial filing of an income tax return. It is a grave mistake to not keep all the pertinent documents and receipts in your files under the pretext that you filed your returns electronically. Documents that need to be kept include T4s, which are proof of employment income, medical expenses, contributions to registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs), alimony and child support statements, childcare costs, moving costs, charitable donations, and the like.
