Questions about recycling in general and Grand Forks’ downtown recycling bins in particular brought out about 15 residents to a meeting with the coordinator of waste management for the regional district.

The group met on Thursday regarding the downtown recycle bins, which have since been removed from their location at the fire hall. Tim Dueck, coordinator of solid waste management for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), talked about the reasons for moving the bins to the landfill and answered questions. Organizing the meeting, which was held at Happy Days Restaurant, was resident Lorraine Dick.

“I thought the meeting went very well,” said Dick. “I think Tim answered the questions adequately. I believe we (consumers) have to become more conscientious about our ultimate responsibility for the stuff we buy. That stuff has to go somewhere. It doesn’t just disappear. I hope that out of this meeting comes some changes in our buying practices. After all, we are the 99 per cent…we can and will make changes!”

The lawyers for Councillor Julia Butler and the lawyers for the City of Grand Forks have pleaded their cases to the Supreme Court of B.C. The case, which was seen by Judge B. Greyell on Monday COUN. JULIA BUTLER at the Vancouver Law Courts, stems from a petition from the city to disqualify Butler from office for breach of oath of office and conflict of interest.

Judge Greyell determined a reserve judgement, which means he has yet to decide. A court representative stated that the judge will look over the documents received and release the judgement later, although no date has been determined.

If disqualified, Butler’s council seat would become vacant and a byelection would be held in the future to fill her seat.

Regardless, a byelection will need to be held this spring to fill the seat vacated by Michael Wirischagin.

2001: Historical society celebrates 50th 1906 A.I. Traunweiser, John Temple and Alex Fraser offered a $5,000 bond to the city for all costs if the council would defend the liquor license bylaw.

1911 The Evening Sun moved into the Brick block on Winnipeg Ave., two doors from the Gazette office.

1916 J.A. McCallum, secretary-treasurer of the Grand Forks Curling Association, received a $5,000 cheque from the provincial Department of Agriculture. The loan was to equip the factory for the manufacture of jams.

1921 Robins have been spotted flitting around town and a subscriber called in to assure the Gazette office that spring had arrived.

1926 Monty Mudge passed away at Camp Kearney Hospital in San Diego at the age of 33. Monty was one of the first volunteers from Grand Forks for the late war. He was buried at the Evergreen Cemetery.

1931 The Greenwood Gorillas captured the third hockey game 5-3 against the Grand Forks Indians. Line-up for the Indians was: Manson, Savage, Barlee, Atwood, Bailey, Lewis, Ronald, Bickerton, and Saunders.

1936 Stockholders of the Granby Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Vancouver approved the voluntary dissolution of the company’s affairs there.

1941 The first Buttercup Award went to Joe McDonald. Oddfellows trimmed the Firemen at crib for 70 games to 60.

1946 Ace Talarico returned from Vancou-

ver where he received his final discharge from the army. He planned to stay in Grand Forks and operate the Valley Meat Market.

1951 Two district pioneers, Mrs. Donald McCallum and Mrs. Emma Barlee, were laid to rest here.

1956 A $40,000 enterprise consisting of a service station and later a café and auto court is planned for the Christina Lake area, along with the new southern provincial highway.

1961 The worst traffic accident in the district wiped out the male side of a Fife family when a station wagon driven by Fred Szimmer was in a head-on collision with a transport truck. Killed in the accident were Szimmer and his two sons, Tony and Fred.

1965 Beautification of the arena grounds was finally selected as the Centennial project. The work involved will entail complete landscaping of the land around the arena, installation of concrete walks and special underground wiring for lighting the grounds.

1971 It was announced this week that equipment has been ordered from a Vancouver firm for converting the present beehive burner of the Grand Forks sawmill to a smokeless, ashless operation 1975 RCMP had to use tear gas to flush an armed man out of a local sporting goods store early Friday morning, successfully defusing a situation that could well have ended in tragedy.

It was on Jan. 29, 1951, that a group of people, interested in recording and preserving history, gathered to form the society. Fifty years later and 13 (soon to be 14) reports later they are still going strong.

2006 The Kal Tire Southern Bears were victorious in the historic Grand Forks Border Bruins Alumni Tournament this past weekend. Four squads played a total of eight games in a tribute event that is the result of a sizeable effort by a host of volunteers and notably, tirelessly orchestrated by Ron and Iris Hooge.

2011 Clearwater resident Steve Mullen and his team of Alaskan Racing Huskies are the winners of the Rail Trail 200 sled dog race. The total purse for the race was $10,000 with the winner getting $3,000. The previous year the race had to be cancelled due to the weather.

Hotels, motels and other accommodators in Grand Forks and Christina Lake may soon be charging a hotel tax. After receiving more information from staff, council agreed unanimously on Jan. 25 at the regular council meeting at Grand Forks City Hall to support endorsing an application that would add a two per cent hotel tax for Grand Forks accommodators. The Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT) is being proposed by the Christina Gateway Community Development Association (CDA) as a way to raising money to help market the region.

“At one point, we held off because it was only ourselves and Christina Lake that would be involved,” said Mayor Frank Konrad.

“We didn’t have all the figures of who supported it. We want to know if the hotel owners were in favour of it. We didn’t want to ram it down their throats.”

Council was able to get the numbers they sought, which indicated that 70 per cent of Grand Forks hotel owners were in support of the MRDT. Regionally, 64 per cent of accommodators and 60.9 per cent of rooms from across the Boundary are in support—a number which exceeds the required 51 per cent support.

“It’s pretty much everywhere, the hotel tax,” said Konrad. “We wouldn’t be unique if we put it on our hotels. The money goes to promoting and marketing the area,

which is great. Maybe down the road Greenwood and Midway will get on board and it will be Boundary-wide.”

Cavan Gates, community coordinator for Christina Gateway CDA, said that they are very pleased by the decision.

“Kudos to Grand Forks city staff for putting together a solid briefing,” he said. “We’re going to work on finalizing the application now that we have the approval of both the accommodators and the politicians. Once done, we will be sending it into the province for approval.

They will run it through their process which will take between six to nine months. If it’s a yes, the tax will start to be collected.”

Gates said the MRDT tax would be collected by the province and given to the RKDB and then to the Boundary Museum Society, which will facilitate the implementation of the marketing plan. “That’s all theoretical right now and it will be determined in the action plan,” he said. “The Boundary Museum will implement the plan since they are representative of the whole Boundary, which we were looking for.”

The action plan, which is in draft form at this time, includes holding networking and professional development events, increase quality of tourism products such as hiking, biking, tubing, swimming, and much more, increase off-peak season products, collect and analyze statistics, increase events targeting youth, and employ a part-time marketing manager.

Boundary communities are shrinking according to reports from the provincial government’s StatsBC website. The population estimate for B.C. cities in 2015 is out and Grand Forks is at 3,936, down 2.1 per cent (4021) from the year before. Meanwhile, Greenwood is at 692, down two people from 2014. Midway is at 655 for 2015,

The Grand Forks landfill is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon until 4 p.m.

that through their contract with MMBC, the RDKB provides the staffing and the space for the bins at the landfill, while MMBC collects the material.

The curbside program is provided by a contractor (Kettle Valley Waste) and includes garbage and recycling on alternating weeks, and green bins every week.

For recycling, the RDKB recommends curbside collection for paper, cardboard, tin cans and rigid plastic containers.

MMBC recycling bins at the landfill are to be used for film plastic, glass and styrofoam containers. Once collected, the material is sent to the Cascade Recovery Depot in Kelowna.

City needs study After a presentation by the city’s energy consultant Alex Love at a budget consultation, Grand Forks is considering building it’s own substation and becoming a transmission costumer of Fortis.

That would mean cost savings to both the city and the residents. Of course, before anything happens the city will need to have a feasibility study done.

It may seem an unnecessary and expensive under-taking especially for a city desperate to save money. But without a proper consulting firm looking into the various expenses and different options for providing energy to residents.

A study will take some time and then some will have to disseminate the information and provide options and suggestions to council for decision down the road.

In the end, council will have to decide whether spending money up front for a substation is worth the long range savings being a transmission customer would offer.

On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY Around here in the Grand Forks and Boundary area we are experiencing four seasons sometimes all in one day. We’ve had much more snow this year, which is great for the ski hills and for the river levels but for those of us who have to spend 10 minutes in the early morning plowing the driveway and wiping the snow of the car, the sunshine is welcome.

What a busy week last week after the usual post-Christmas slow down. Christina Lake had their well attended Winter Festival, MLA Linda Larson had a luncheon with guest speakers, Rotary had their Scotch Tasting, out in the West Boundary, Midway had their snowmobile races.

There were lots of great chanc-

es to get out of the house and try different things. Next week is the big family day weekend celebration in Grand Forks and the Ice Fishing Derby out at Wilgress Lake.

Now let’s talk about good ol’ 2015. Despite being a month ago here are a few of my highlights of last year. I’m going to start with music. It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about the music industry so I figured it’s time.

So without further adieu here are my top 10 songs of 2015. Years past I’ve analyzed each song and maybe talked about the artists.

But let’s face it, music is subjective and I’m no music critic so I won’t tell you whether the chorus is lacking something or other.

The truth is these are the songs I like because they appeal to me—they song good. Lyrics are important but really, if the music isn’t good who really cares.

Okay #10 was Shawn Mendes’ Stitches, #9 was Hotline Bling by Drake, a couple of catchy diddies

by a pair of Canadian singers.

Walk the Moon was #8 with the ultra-catchy Shut up and Dance; while coming in at #7 is the soul meets rap hit Locked Away by R. City with Adam Levine of Maroon 6. The #6 song according to me was OMI’s ear worm epic Cheerleader. Hitting #5 on my own chart was Honey I’m Good

It was just a couple of weeks ago that rock legend David Bowie passed away. He was one of my favourite rock stars. He was well known for changing his look up and his music as well.

My favourite Bowie songs are the older ones like Life on Mars, Starman and Heroes. Of the newer ones Modern Love was catchy and is rightly regarded as one of the top songs of the ’80s.

I saw Bowie live in Vancouver at B.C. Place Stadium during his Glass Spider tour in 1987. Performing all his hits on an elaborate stage with an actual giant glass spider figure, Bowie nonethe-less stood out with his larger than life presence.

A final musical shout out to Fall Out Boy who although short of my top 10 put out a couple of killer tracks Uma Thurman and Centuries. Interesting side note—Fall Out Boy was named after Radioactive Man’s sidekick from The Simpsons.

Property should be left as is Editor, The Gazette: An open letter to Linda Larson, MLA BoundarySimilkameen: I am writing this letter to express my opposition to the proposed seniors housing project on the corner of the only piece of wild lakeshore left at Christina Lake.

This lovely piece of land has been a haven for nature lovers and walkers for years. Now this proposal will change it into a seniors’ complex and parking lot.

Christina Lake is certainly in need of seniors housing but a seniors manufactured home park already exists and is underused.

This amazing piece

of land that is being proposed has beaver, otter, great blue herons and so many other wild birds and animals.

This property also is interspersed with walking trails and benches to observe the wild side of the Lake.

This seniors’ centre is across a very busy highway from the store, post office, drug store and clinic. This means seniors will have to cross this highway to access these amenities. It also means I will not have the beautiful trails I shared with my children to share with my grandchildren.

express my concern but a sudden family emergency made that impossible.

I wrote a letter about these same concerns two years ago and thought the issue was over but now it has started again.

I would like to ask you to intervene and consider the impact this will have on our beautiful Lake. Issues around sewage, impact on wildlife and the urbanization of our last piece of wild Lake left.

Truck financing approved Financing of $722,518.58 needed for fire truck

COUNCIL BRIEFS A hotel tax and support for a Hockeyville nomination were a few of the topics covered at the Jan. 26 Grand Forks City Council meeting.

Fire truck financing approved

Council approved financing 5-1 (Butler opposed) for the Grand Forks Fire/Rescue’s new 2015 Rosenbauer 30 Metre (100 foot) Cobra Platform fire truck through the Municipal Finance Authority Equipment Financing program for $722,518.58.

The ladder truck was delivered last summer at a total cost of $1,072,718.58. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has contributed $350,000 towards the truck, leaving the rest for the city. Staff recommended financing the truck through the Equipment Financing Program offreed by the Municipal Finance Association as the interest rate (1.31 per cent) is very reasonable.

The maximum term for financing is five years. This would equate to approximately $65 parcel tax per parcel, per year, for five years, based on 2,324 properties.

WildSafe application gets go ahead

The WildSafeBC program will be returning to Grand Forks this season after council voted for staff to prepare an application for a coordinator. The program features a local coordinator who coordinates a number of activities aimed at reducing human-wild-

life conflict through education, innovation and cooperation. The program has operated in Grand Forks since 2013.

The city is expected to contribute a minimum of $3,000 towards the program, while the B.C. Conservation Foundation provides $8,155 and covers the hiring, training and supervision.

The program is earmarked to run from May 1 to Nov. 30. In prior years, the city also contributed a wage top-up of $4.81 per hour.

City looks at changes to campground policy

After an increase in complaints regarding usage and safety at the city campground at City Park, staff has initiated a review of the campground bylaw and policy. The primary concerns were in regards to dog kennels, unsightly tenting and long-term campers.

To prepare for the 2016 camping season, which begins in May, city staff will present bylaw and policy amendments to council within the next few weeks. The proposed changes will move the regulations within the policy to the bylaw, while removing the operational items into a departmental procedure.

The bylaw will see the addition of the policy items while also implementing adjustments to the campground rates (which are now in the fees and charges bylaw) and other housekeeping items.

People came from all over the Boundary to hear from several spekaers at the Omega Restaurant on Saturday. There were about 40 people on hand for the luncheon with Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson, which featured three presentations from local groups and a tradition Russian lunch of borscht and bread.

Constituency assistant Colleen Misner spoke first and talked about the various roles of the MLA including providing social help, providing information on government services, attending community events, and offering congratulatory messages.

Introducing the speakers, and organizing the event, was Cher Wyers.

Gina Burroughs, government agent, Service BC, spoke about integrating income assistance services. She talked about how the office in Grand Forks is highly regarded throughout B.C. for being a “one stop shop” with Employment Insurance, pension, social insurance numbers (third Friday of each month

through Service Canada), disability information, medical services plan information, residential tenancy information and more.

Cynthia Garnett and Melanie Shenstone from Boundary Family and Individual Services Society talked about the many services they offer including Baby’s Best Chance, peer mentoring, breastfeeding café, and more.

The final guest speaker was Connie Marchal, executive director of the Boundary Women’s Coalition. Marchal talked about the work the group does

Marchal said they are in discussion with BC Housing about having second stage housing in Grand Forks, which would allow 18-24 month stays for women and children as well as counseling and financial aid as necessary.

The city could save the taxpayers money in the long run if they pony up for a substation and become a transmission customer to FortisBC and not a distribution customer—that from Alex Love, the city’s energy consultant, who gave a presentation to council and residents in attendance at a public meeting put on by the city on Jan. 27.

He went over several different scenarios for possible changes to the Fortis substation at South Ruckle. In his presentation, Love said that the city is currently a distribution customer of Fortis.

The city buys power from Fortis and sells it to residents. He said that becoming a transmission customer could be a possible way of delivering a better value to the residents of Grand Forks with a reduction in bulk power purchasing price. Expediting matters is the fact that Fortis will need to built a new substation in Grand Forks due to an potential issue with flooding.

“There’s really two different issues were discussing here,” said Love. “One is a flood plain issue at the existing Ruckle substation—Fortis is considering whether they should relocate or elevate that station in order

to deal with some flood plain issues. Separately, Grand Forks has to consider whether to change from being a distribution costumer to a transmission customer. That would mean they would build their own substation if they became a transmission customer.”

Love said it’s two separate issues, only tied together because of the timeliness involving with Fortis likely having to rebuild the Ruckle substation.

“Grand Forks would have to spend money to buy and install the substation but the day they put it in service, they start to realize a benefit,” said Love.

“Grand Forks would still buy energy from Fortis but at the much cheaper transmission rate.”

Dave Reid, manager of operations, said at this point they’re just looking into having a feasibility study to determine whether or not the cost to the city would be worth it. A feasibility study would cost the city $50,000 and would have to be approved with the budget in May. Also at the meeting, CAO Doug Allin gave an overview of the city’s upcoming capital projects as well as the projects completed in 2015. The fire engine ladder truck is the most expensive item from 2015, com-

ing in at $1,071,459. The downtown beautification project cost $275,000, while the City Hall rebuild cost $47,892.

Allin and other staff members talked about the 2015 carry-forward capital projects which appear in the 2016 budget including the spray park for $83,926, airport beacons at $60,000, and playground equipment replacement at $45,000. Other engineering carry-forward projects are the multi-utility projects at Third Street and at 22nd Street for total cost of $3,324,130, and the west side fire protection at $928,784.

The city’s reserve balances at year end of 2015 are $2,940,722.

The total reserves at year end 2016 are set at $2,485,906. A 2011 report from Urban Systems determined the city had a $32 million infrastructure deficit making for a short fall of $29,514,094.

Proposed capital projects for 2016 are: Fifth Street water main replacement at a total budget of $575,000; Well #3 pump and motor for $405,000; Third Street sewer main repair at $100,000; and public works yard fuel tank replacement at $75,000. Council and staff also discussed the long-awaited Silver Kettle Village sidewalk, which would likely go from Silver Kettle to Extra Foods at a cost of $212,500.

POLICE BRIEFS By Gazette Staff Vehicle with no plate pulled over On Jan. 26, at 1:47 p.m. , Grand Forks RCMP stopped a vehicle that was not displaying a licence plate that was travelling on 73rd Avenue.

While dealing with the 54-yearold female driver, the officer determined that the driver had been consuming liquor that night. The driver provided a sample into an approved screening device that resulted in a “Fail” reading.

“The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days,” said Cpl. Philip Crack of the Grand Forks RCMP. The driver was also issued a ticket for having open alcohol in the vehicle.

On Jan. 28, at 8:35 p.m. , Grand Forks RCMP stopped a vehicle that was being operated by a 36-yearold male who was known to be an unlicensed driver.

“While dealing with the driver, the officer determined that he had been consuming alcohol that evening,” said Crack. The driver refused to provide a sample into an approved screening device and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was im-

pounded for 30 days.”

The driver was also issued a ticket for having no driver’s licence.

On Jan. 30, at 6:36 p.m., Grand Forks RCMP responded to a 911 call on Granby Road. Upon arrival it was determined that a 50-yearold male was intoxicated and had threatened to kill his spouse. The male had also attempted to light a fire in the residence. The male was arrested and held in police custody to go before a Judge.

Suspicious vehicle checked

On Jan. 28, at 10:07 p.m., Grand Forks RCMP checked a suspicious vehicle parked along Central Avenue. Police arrested the 35-year-old male for possession of a controlled substance. “Further investigation revealed that the male was also intoxicated by drugs and was on conditions to not possess drugs,” said Crack.

The male was issued a 24 hour driving suspension and was held in police custody to appear in court on Feb. 1.

Grand Forks RCMP responded to 41 calls for service for the week Jan. 25-31.

This past weekend the GFSS Wolves boys curling team travelled to Invermere to take on the boy’s team from David Thompson Secondary School for the right to attend the B.C. Secondary School Curling Championships. Three games were scheduled to be played at the Invermere Curling Club, two on Saturday, Jan. 30 and one the next day if required.

The first game on Saturday morning saw GFSS take a quick 2 -0 lead after two ends of play.

David Thompson Secondary (DTSS) came back strong taking one point in the third end and stealing two in the fourth end to have a one-point lead going into the break.

The fifth end saw GFSS take a single point to tie the game up. The sixth end resulted in blank so the game remained tied. DTSS stole a point in the seventh end to have the lead coming home in the final end of play. The final end saw DTSS

I am very excited for the Special Olympics regional qualifiers swimming tournament in Kelowna, April 9. That gives us the chance to go to the BC Summer Games 2017.

All the athletes are good swimmers. We really enjoy it. We swim at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre. Cees is our coach and does a great job. The water is cold but we get used to it.

That’s what’s good about Special Olympics, you can do what works best for you, at least at qualifiers. Still, you have to finish races the right way or you may be disqualified. For breaststroke you have to touch the wall with two hands. All the other strokes you finish with one hand on the wall.

Health aspects shine through at kung fu club Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks Kung Fu Club has been around for nearly 30 years after beginning as Temple Kung Fu under Grand Master Simon. The club trains in the White Dragon style of kung fu. Kazakoff said there are about six masters left from the original Temple Kung Fu, where the White Dragon style originated from. “We all trained under Grand Master Simon, who is basically retired now,” said head instructor Mike Kazakoff, who has been training for over 30 years.

“The club began in Grand Forks in 1986 under Grand Master Simon and has been operating ever since.”

“It’s an amateur club,” said Kazakoff. “We generally train three times a week at the Senior’s Centre in City Park. We get a good deal from them. We have about a dozen members that have been with us for awhile.”

The club was a new addition to the annual Dance Extravaganza held Thursday at the GFSS auditorium. The club has been around for a number of years now but this was quite likely the first time they shared the stage with dance groups. The club,

as well as the Tai Chi club, was brought in to celebrate “movement” in the Boundary.

At the Dance Extravaganza, the club performed movements showcasing their style of kung fu. “We did several of the martial arts forms that are beneficial to your health,” he said. “The motions are the ones we do in our club. Martial arts is a lot about motions. That’s how you reinforce your knowledge and get the most out of it.”

Kazakoff said that modern day martial arts students practice kung fu mainly for the promotion of health and well-being, as well as peace of mind knowing you can defend yourself if needed.

“However, there is a whole universe of knowledge buried in the art that can only be gained through long and hard dedicated work and practice,” he said. “When you get that thirst for knowledge, you will quickly learn that you only get out of it what you are willing to put in.”

Kazakoff said the health and well-being comes about through practicing, being active and stretching. “The self-defence is a small part of it,” he said. “The health aspects are really what shines through. It’s all based on

natural movements. All the motions we do build core power.

You heal yourself: mind and body. That’s why I got into it. I wanted the health aspects.”

At age 75, Kazakoff said he has never felt better. “It keeps you flexible,” he said. “It keeps you young. I’m more flexible now than when I was in my 30s. It’s just through practicing, stretching and doing everything in the program.”

The club is offering a gentle stretch and breathing form on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Senior’s Centre from 5:30 - 6 p.m.

“It was put together from one of the martial arts healing forms used by Shaolin monks to maintain their health and well-being,” said Kazakoff. “By participating in and learning this very old style of low impact stretching and breathing form through regular practice you can energize your

Great day for racing at Phoenix Mountain Gazette Staff

The Boundary’s own Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill welcomed 100 keen youngsters on Jan. 24 to its leg of the Rio Tinto Nancy Greene Ski League slalom competition for the under 12 and under 14 categories.

Racers and spectators were treated to pristine weather conditions and enjoyed some excellent slalom techniques courtesy of the five ski clubs that make up the West Kootenay zone: Phoenix, Red Mountain (Rossland), Salmo, White Water (Nelson) and Summit Lake.

On Sunday, the teams travelled to Rossland, where over 200 skiers took to the course, and on Feb. 14 they will convene in Salmo for the competition there.

On Feb. 28, the racing will switch to Whitewater and the zone finals will take place on Mar. 13 at Summit Lake.

Four Grand Forks residents will be heading to New Brunswick to play in the national Special Olympics Floor Hockey championships at the start of March.

The four (Charlie Kain, Mike Windsor, Brogran Beliveau and Jake Raschpichler) will be joined by other players throughout the province

who form Team BC. Coaching the team is another Grand Forks resident, Derek Taylor, who also coaches the local Special Olympics floor hockey squad. “It’s a big pairing,” said Taylor. “I coach the local team and from that I’ve taken four guys from here. We also have four players from Creston, five from Burnaby and one from Trail. That makes up the B.C. team.”

Theatre society gets ready to bring Mary Poppins to the stage SUBMITTED

Boundary Musical Theatre Society (BMTS) was formed a decade ago and has produced at least one musical per year since then, sometimes two.

Some of the musicals produced in the past have been The Sound of Music, Grease, Annie get your Gun, Footloose and Chicago.

The group is currently working hard on rehearsals and all the other myriad responsibilities required to bring the musical Mary Poppins to life on the GFSS stage.

Recently in an effort to produce the finest quality theatre possible, president Deb Baker phoned several other theatre groups in the province inquiring about the possibility of borrowing or renting costumes that would fit this production.

One of those groups was in the process of playing Mary Poppins to their community.

Although they didn’t have any costumes available, they offered her professionallybuilt sets for approximately 85 per cent off of their value.

As these sets are of superior quality and of a nature that they can be used not only in this production but in many future musicals as well, the group couldn’t pass on such an amazing deal. However, since they are a nonprofit society, BMTS are now currently fundraising to help cover the costs. They are selling tickets through a licensed raffle to a Mary Poppins themed basket worth approximately $200. They have asked for donations from local businesses and have gratefully received a sizable donation from Community Futures and several donations from other local businesses and people.

“They call us the Kootenay Storm because the majority of the team is from the Kootenays,” he said. “We went to a tournament in Vancouver recently and came first place.

We just came back from one in Abbotsford, which was a little stiffer competition but we still ended up in first. So we’re 6-0 heading into nationals.”

Taylor said the team is playing Saskatchewan first, followed by the host team from Newfoundland which he expects to be very tough. “Newfoundland upset B.C .last time at nationals and we play them right off the bat,” he said. “It is their home province and they’ll be ready.”

Purchasing the sets required several members of the group to make a 20-hour trip to the Lower Mainland to pack the sets onto a truck.

This on top of the two to three rehearsals a week and their regular jobs has many of them quite tired but still excited about the upcoming show.

Putting on a musical is an endeavor of love for the members of this group who commit to months of time on each production, from auditions to rehearsals, set work, costuming, voice lessons and choreography, it is a long and involved process done completely out of desire to keep local theatre alive in our small community.

The group has members who range in age from four years to 80 years old and also includes some diverse-ability young people in acting and back stage activities. The whole cast is extremely excited for this production, with the quality of sets and costumes, and with the lovely returning actress Jen Gargul playing Mary and the talented and hardworking Aaron Baker doing the choreography and playing Bert.

Even the children in this musical have mastered the English accent and this promises to be an enjoyable outing for patrons of all ages. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on March 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12, with 2 p.m. matinees on March 6 and 13. Pest Management Plan Number RDKB-PMP-2016/2021

The RDKB is renewing a Pest Management Plan and will submit the plan for approval under the Integrated Pest Management Act. This Plan will describe a Mosquito Control Program using Integrated Pest Management, including the use of insecticides, and will replace the need for Pesticide Use Permits.

Purpose: Mosquito Control for the purpose of nuisance control.

Application Method: Treatment of mosquito larva development sites by hand and helicopter application.

Location: The areas to be included in this Pest Management Plan application are limited to public and private lands within the following existing program areas: • Grand Forks and surrounding areas covered by mosquito control extended service area • Area ‘D’ along Granby north 20km from Grand Forks and surrounding as covered by mosquito control extended service area • Christina Lake and surrounding as covered by mosquito control extended service area Pesticide: Yearly totals up to, but not exceeding: • 1000 ha with Aquabac (PCP No. 26863) (Bacillus thuringiensis var israeliensis) • 1000 ha. with Vectobac 200 G (PCP No. 19466) (Bacillus thuringiensis var israeliensis) A selection of insecticides has been chosen to increase the ability to target mosquito populations in the most environmentally responsible method possible. All products listed are registered in Canada for the intended use. Aquabac and Vectobac have been chosen to control larval mosquitoes in their development sites. These pesticides are target speciÂżc non-residual and non-to[ic The RDKB will not treat the total area of all the products listed above, but will choose the best method to treat with the least environmental impact. All products are registered for mosquito control in Canada.
