P&M Recycling has an extra 60 days to keep its warehouse open, thanks to a decision by Whitehorse city council on Monday.

he owner of P&M Recycling is underwhelmed by a decision by city councillors to give him a two-month reprieve from an order to shut down one of his two warehouses.

“Big deal,” said Pat McInroy, who has run the company for 17 years. “How can it possibly help me?”

McInroy has been ordered to close his warehouse on Sixth Avenue, where he stores and ships cardboard. Closing the building would be a big loss, he said, and he’s uncertain about how it will affect his business going forward.

The City has ordered McInroy to shut his warehouse down for a number of reasons.

The building, located on Sixth Avenue, is in a mixed-use residential and commercial zone. Recycling activities aren’t allowed there, city officials say.

Moreover, the fire prevention officer has expressed concerns about the building’s inadequate sprinkler system, as well as an outdoor storage area, which is in close proximity to overhead powerlines.

A nearby resident, Chris Isaak, has also complained about noise and dust from traffic in the area.

The other P&M building on Ray Street, where plastics are stock-

piled and processed, is allowed to operate because it’s been grandfathered in.

But last week Pat Ross, manager of planning and building services with the City, said a fire in the building would require the evacuation of a large portion of downtown. A potential land swap between P&M and the City has been proposed, but finding both suitable land and a building would be difficult, Ross added.

Last November, the City issued an order stating McInroy had two months to shut down his Sixth Avenue warehouse and remove its materials.

McInroy appealed the decision and applied to amend the City’s Official Community Plan so the lot could be designated industrial instead.

At Monday evening’s meeting, members of council were supposed to vote on whether or not they wanted to continue the amendment process.

They decided they did not want to change the community plan.

Councillor Dan Boyd made a suggestion designed to give McInroy a bit more breathing room. He proposed that council drop the process and give McInroy an extra 60 working days to respect the City’s order.

“We’re in the middle of a process to see if we can create a curb-

side recycling program,” Boyd said.

“And that’s a recycling program.

I know recyclers in town will be interested in participating in that.

“I’d like to see that process come to a natural conclusion and see what the outcomes of that are.”

But the extension makes little difference to McInroy, he said.

He’s been using the building for the same purposes since 2012 and doesn’t understand why the City would want to shut the warehouse down now.

He’s also spoken to Isaak on a number of occasions, he added, and believed they could work out their issues.

“I’ve always said we could mitigate what the problems were,” McInroy said. “‘Were’ is the key word because we’re not nearly as busy as we were when Raven shut down (its public drop off). I have no problem with what they (Raven) did, but I stepped up and took the brunt of it for a very long time.

“Hindsight being 20/20 I should have said no, forget it, I’m done.”

McInroy said he doesn’t believe the outcome of the City’s blue bin program is likely to help him resolve his warehouse issue, since it’s unlikely the City could get the program up and running in the next 60 days, he added.

Territory announces functional plan for Dawson airport Maura Forrest News Reporter

T

he Yukon government has plans to start planning possible upgrades to the Dawson City airport this year, including the paving of the airport runway.

Premier Darrell Pasloski made the announcement at the 2016 Mineral Exploration Roundup in Vancouver this week.

But the commitment seems a little anemic after former MP Ryan Leef’s campaign promise that the federal government would spend up to $30 million on Yukon airports, including

$8 million to pave the Dawson runway.

Leef lost to Liberal MP Larry Bagnell in last fall’s federal election.

Now, it seems, the project has gone back to the drawing board and the numbers are all up in the air again.

Highways and Public Works Minister Scott Kent said the cost of the upgrades still needs to be worked out. But he said early estimates for the runway paving are about $11 million – a jump from the $8 million envisioned

by Leef last year.

Kent said operations and maintenance of the runway would likely cost another $500,000 each year.

He said he hopes the federal Liberal government will contribute to the project, though nothing has been worked out yet.

The Yukon government also needs to figure out what other upgrades will be completed along with the paving, Kent explained. Possibilities include rebuilding or relocating the Dawson airport terminal building.

The territory also needs to figure out a plan to pave the runway without causing too much disruption to flights, particularly during tourist season.

Even though Leef’s campaign promise sounded firm, Kent said, all of this planning work

would still have been needed if the Conservatives had won.

“There’s still a number of unanswered questions that we have to address.”

Kent said the runway won’t be paved this year, but the work might start next year.

The functional plan will be tendered this year. Kent said he expects the plan to cost about $300,000 or $400,000. Funds will be allocated in the spring budget.

The plan will estimate the cost of the upgrades, and will outline how to manage the permafrost beneath the airport runway. It will also look at safety recommendations from Transport Canada.

In the fall, Air North president Joe Sparling said operating costs for two new ATR 42 planes it planned to buy would be significantly lower if the Dawson runway were paved.

“One blade on an ATR propeller is worth about $70,000, and if you happen to nick it with a rock and have to replace it…. That type of damage you don’t see on paved runways, but you do on gravel runways,” he explained at the time.

Sparling also said aircraft can carry more passengers when they’re landing on a paved runway, which would bring down the cost per passenger.

he Department of Health and Social Services insists it was in on the joke when it came up with a vitamin D campaign that quickly became the target of Internet mockery over the weekend.

Still, the department has since revised the ads, which encourage Yukoners to get enough vitamin D in their diets, by removing all references to “the D� – slang for male genitalia. “We knew it was an innuendo for sex,� said health spokesperson Pat Living. “We did not realize that it was as crude as it is now being purported to be.� “We all need the D. A photo of one of the posters made the rounds on social media over the last few days and had been viewed more than 10,000 times as of Monday morning. It generated a news story on Buzzfeed Canada.

By Tuesday afternoon views of the original image had gone up to 23,000. The story was picked up by websites around the world including People magazine, Vice, the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and the UK’s Independent. For a time it was the most popular story on Adweek’s website.

The news gave headline writers around the world a chance to dust off their best dirty jokes and take a shot at the territory. “Everyone in the Yukon is thirsty for the D according to this hilariously misguided government ad campaign,� proclaimed the website Uproxx. “‘We all need the D,’ says world’s worst public health campaign,� read another story. “Yukon Health And Social Services wants to make sure everyone gets a whole lot of D,� offered a third.

Back home, the Yukon’s Health Department took to Facebook to explain its decision. “While the campaign had some unexpected results, such as being mentioned in BuzzFeed, we definitely hit our target audience and

beyond. In fact, the very first sentence in the BuzzFeed article says: ‘Yukon Health and Social Services is running a campaign to remind people to take their vitamin D.’ This is the entire point of the campaign.�

Living said the idea for the campaign was developed by the department, working with a designer.

She said the advertisements, which include posters and larger ads inside city buses, have all been taken down and will not be going back up.

One of the reasons is that local models used in the campaign have started to suffered backlash, she said. “They were brought in to do a job and now people are providing very personal comments. Which are completely inappropriate and I’m really disappointed, honestly, that people would take it to that level.�

Living couldn’t say how much money the department spent on the campaign. “It was really not a huge amount. For a campaign it was a very minimal amount.�

The government’s website, marketing the virtues of vitamin D, is still online. The image of the woman is still there, but the wording of the text has been changed to “Did you take your vitamin D today?�

aggravated assault twice before now: once in 2003 when he was sentenced to 33 months, and once in 2010 when he was sentenced to three years.

Nehass has insisted he was not sentenced to three years in 2010, only two years less a day, but the judge disagreed.

After listening to a recording of the 2010 sentencing, Brooker ruled that Nehass was sentenced to three years. It was only credit for pre-trial custody that bumped his remaining time under the two-year mark, the judge said.

Most recently Nehass was convicted by a jury last May of forcible confinement, aggravated assault and breaching his probation after attacking a woman in Watson Lake in December 2011. He plans to appeal.

Nehassâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lawyer plans to make an application that his Charter rights have been violated during his time behind bars.

His father has also filed a human rights complaint on his behalf over the length of time he has spent in some form of segregation.

Last year Nehass was sentenced for crimes he committed while in custody at the Whitehorse jail.

Assuming the situation has not changed since then, he has not been part of the jailâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general population since May 2013.

Russ Hobbis joins growing list of Liberal contenders Maura Forrest News Reporter

ong-time Yukon Party member Russ Hobbis has announced he will seek the Liberal nomination for this year’s territorial election.

The owner of Bilsten Creek Tree Service plans to run in Porter Creek South, a riding currently held by Health Minister Mike Nixon.

Hobbis joins businessman Rod Taylor and accessibility advocate Ramesh Ferris as the latest potential Liberal candidate with previous ties to the Yukon Party.

But he insists the change of allegiance isn’t an opportunistic move.

“People can say what they like.

But... Yukon Party values have so far strayed from what I thought they were that I can no longer be associated or want to be associated with that party.”

Hobbis said he gave up his Yukon Party membership over a year ago. He had previously been a member since 2005. He was the Yukon Party candidate for Copperbelt in the 2006 territorial election, losing to then-Liberal leader Arthur Mitchell. He also lost the party’s nomination to House Speaker David Laxton in Porter

Lang re-elected as chair of national security committee Yukon Senator Dan Lang will continue to chair the Senate’s standing committee on national security and defence.

Lang was first elected to the post in 2013. His re-election was announced in a press release yesterday.

The committee was first created in March 2001. Its mandate is to examine legislation and study issues related to national defence, security and veterans’ affairs.

While many of the Liberal contenders have preferred to speak in abstract terms during their announcements, Hobbis focused on three issues of concern and set out specific targets he would fight for as an MLA. It’s something multiple levels of government have been working on since 2012, he said, including his office, former Yukon MP Ryan Leef and the territorial government.

Lang said his understanding is that planning for the facility will happen this year with construction in 2017.

No location has been settled on for the 500-square-metre facility, which is tentatively slated to cost up to $5 million.

Cadets, rangers or the RCMP could use the facility for drills, he said.

Lang said he hopes the building will go on the same site as the current cadet facility.

Boyle Barracks is a 180-hectare site 20 kilometres south of Whitehorse, designed for summer training only.

Because of a lack of storage space, training equipment is currently kept in a sea can. The new facility will have secure storage.

Whitehorse has two cadet corps, with a total of about 60 young Canadians aged 12 to 18.

Lang doesn’t know if that is something the new government plans to follow through with.

et nobody say government cannot move quickly when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s properly motivated.

Yukonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Health and Social Services moved swiftly and surely to stamp out any trace of its instantly infamous â&#x20AC;&#x153;We all need the Dâ&#x20AC;? poster campaign. Fortunately for the juveniles among us, it is now immortal.

The purpose of this campaign was supposed to be that vitamin D is good for you, which I think is a worthwhile public venture.

The Internet, as usual, promptly pounced on it, pointing out â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Dâ&#x20AC;? is slang for the male appendage, more particularly the male appendage doinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sex stuff.

The whole thing followed a fairly standard order of events: Person sees poster, laughs at dick joke, posts a photo of said dick joke on Imgur. Someone posts this Imgur link to Facebook where I see it and promptly write a tweet about it to the effect that the Yukon government appears to not know what â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Dâ&#x20AC;? means, at least in the parlance of our times.

At the same time, other people are finding it on their own and likewise posting about it.

Pretty soon, Buzzfeed Canada is phoning the Health and Social Services for comment. On a Sunday.

Initially, I thought this was your conventional public relations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; ahem â&#x20AC;&#x201C; boner: not unlike the time the Nova Scotia public health agency printed up hundreds of buttons extolling the importance of â&#x20AC;&#x153;pubic health.â&#x20AC;?

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weird is that the department claims staffers knew what â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Dâ&#x20AC;? is slang for.

Whether thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true or not is a matter of some conjecture. After all, public health campaigns are known to sometimes be cheeky in order to grab attention. On the other hand, bureaucracies tend to be averse to controversy, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to imagine a departmental higher-up signing off on a campaign where D equals â&#x20AC;&#x153;dick.â&#x20AC;?

In other words, the department knew it was a sex joke, but considers the whole thing ruined by the fact that people picked up on the sex joke.

Sadly, the spokesperson continued, the people who modeled for the posters are now also receiving unwanted comments about â&#x20AC;&#x153;the D.â&#x20AC;? While it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t clear exactly what those comments are, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pretty obvious potential range here, from the merely tiresome to the completely unacceptable.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unfortunate, because those poor folks were just showing up to pose for photos, and probably had no idea what was in store for them. I highly doubt the photographer discussed display copy with models ahead of time. But again, the department seems to be trying to wash its hands of responsibility here. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They (the models) were brought in to do a job and now people are providing very personal comments. Which are completely inappropriate and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really disappointed, honestly, that people would take it to that level,â&#x20AC;? the spokesperson said.

Uh, you guys started this whole thing, so kindly dismount the high horse.

The News now tells us that the poster campaign shall be consigned to the government memory hole, that all the posters, pamphlets and billboards will go to the shredder or the burn barrel.

This is not a surprise. The poster is, strictly speaking, wildly inappropriate, at least in the sense bureaucracies understand the term, which is to say it could be construed as some-

thing really, really bad, but only if you follow the logic to its darkest, most absurd end. To do that, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have to be the kind of person who thinks your can of Zoodles is flashing you, but then, people like that really do exist.

Still, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the Dâ&#x20AC;? dies a hero. The campaign has generated whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called â&#x20AC;&#x153;earnedâ&#x20AC;? media, coverage that amplifies the intended message for free. Indeed this very piece is doing that.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to believe that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the intention all along. And hey, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bloody dark out right now. Vitamin D really is our friend. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an easy pitch.

But all this reveals a fundamental insanity at the heart of this kind of public sector marketing: the idea that an ad campaign should be risque, but not too risque, is impossibly wishful thinking. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In practice,â&#x20AC;? writes the anthropologist David Graeber in his book about bureaucracy, The Utopia of Rules, â&#x20AC;&#x153;bureaucratic procedure invariably means ignoring all the subtleties of real social existence.â&#x20AC;?

Consider this statement the department offered to the National Post: â&#x20AC;&#x153;[W]hat was considered cheeky messaging on our Vitamin D campaign escalated to ribald humour, taking the campaign into graphic areas that were never intended.â&#x20AC;?

It is at this point one wonders if these people have ever been teenagers, smoked pot in university or even stood around a fire with friends, talking about random crap over a few beers. Things can get weird. The reality of human conversation is that it is unruly, rambunctious, sometimes gross, and often prone to get out of hand. It is inherently difficult to govern. It is the folly of bureaucrats to think they could even try.

Long story short, my car was in desperate need of repairs. They not only fixed it but allowed me to pay for it when my pension comes in at the end of this month. I was having bad dreams about having an accident. I need my car

to get around and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t walk so good any more.

With SCAN, we’re eroding safeguards against state power burden on the state.

Again it does not need to “be sure.”

In a way civil forfeiture is even worse than SCAN. Civil forfeiture actually helps government get something we all know it wants – money – and has become horribly corrupted in many of the jurisdictions where it has been implemented.

Thanks to a grassroots public outcry, the previous Fentieled Yukon Party government scrapped plans to bring in such legislation back in 2010, and the current incarnation hasn’t given any indication that it intends to try again.

But I digress.

SCAN defenders would say that times have changed. They correctly note that governing politicians are unable to settle political scores by sending SCAN officers to knock down your door. Boosters portray the state as a benign, well-intentioned force and say that the only ones who have anything to worry about are those who are up to no good. I’m unconvinced.

Times may have changed, but people haven’t. My concern isn’t that by creating SCAN we’re on a non-stop train to a totalitarian dictatorship. I have faith in the institutional safeguard our country against an over-intrusive state.

that level of power and authority. Were there assurances that the power would be invariably wielded judiciously, by scrupulous individuals with a sense of restraint and justice, SCAN may be tolerable. But there are no such guarantees, nor can such guarantees be given.

People are fallible. Even my meagre, sheltered life experience has provided me with numerous examples of interactions with unreasonable people in positions of authority drunk on their own power and willing to use their own discretion inappropriately.

I shudder at the thought of potentially empowering such individuals with the authority of SCAN. There is also a lack of institutional safeguards in SCAN. SCAN has no equivalent to the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP. Some state actions of SCAN must be conducted by court application and there are provisions for appeal. But applications operate based on the substantially reduced “civil” burden imposed on the much better funded state, and appeals beyond the Supreme Court may only be made on “questions of law” and only with leave. The government has really stacked the decks in its favour.

And most importantly, let us be honest with ourselves: we don’t need SCAN. Cases can be built and evidence gathered to

overcome the hurdles imposed by criminal law. The criminal burden is hardly insurmountable.

We just don’t want to pay for it. Justice is expensive and time consuming. Moreover, once in a while bad people just get away with being bad people.

And being sure that someone is peddling drugs before we throw them out of their home is just so hard. It is so much easier to kick them to the curb after determining that they’re “probably” drug dealers (In my head I’m saying those last two lines with the tone of a whiney five-year-old who doesn’t want to do his chores).

But has SCAN really made us any safer? Its success is highly debatable. Ten years in and drugs are still a big problem in our community. All SCAN has really done is move the problem from point A to point B. The notorious Wheeler Street drug house may be gone, but if recent news stories are any indication, knocking down drug dealing operations is little more than an elaborate game of “whack a mole.”

Orwellian-titled legislation aside, I don’t buy that my community is made “safer” by unleashing bureaucrats without the restraints of wise and prudent legal principles developed over time to protect us all against state power.

Suspect in Saskatchewan shooting teased, called himself a ‘black sheep,’ say friends inside La Loche Community School on Friday when gunfire broke out. They fled the area, one racing to safety outside, the other barricading himself inside the gym change room.

Janvier, 16, said he and his friends have since been discussing what could have motivated the attack that also wounded seven people.

Both friends said they were aware of at least one other teen who regularly picked on the accused. Neither boy could describe what form the teasing took, other than recalling jokes were made or people would act “tough” toward

him.

But they both understood the accused didn’t like it.

“He once said that, ‘Some day I’m going to eff-up (the bully). I’m going to beat him up. He said that like a couple times,’ ‘’ said Janvier.

Mostly, the teenagers simply knew the accused as an introverted peer who hung out with them every day.

Desjarlais-Thomas doesn’t understand what could have happened.

“This is a young man who is perhaps a victim himself of circumstances,” Merasty said.

“It’s a community with a history of violence, bullying, suicides, drugs and abuse and dysfunction. This could be any community. This could be my community.”

LA LOCHE, SASK. he father of one of the victims in a northern Saskatchewan shooting burned logs at the community cemetery Monday to thaw the ground where his son will be buried.

“He was a good kid,” Gerald Moise said as he poured gasoline to ignite a fire that will burn for three days over the grave site.

He remembered his son, Dayne Fontaine, as a 17-yearold who liked to be outdoors in the remote community of La Loche that sits on the edge of a lake and in the heart of the boreal forest.

“He always (went) up north with grandparents hunting and he liked quadding.”

Dayne and his 13-year-old brother, Drayden Fontaine, were found dead in a home on Friday. A teacher and an aide were shot and killed shortly after at the high school. Seven other people were wounded.

Moise, who is not Drayden’s father, said losing his boy is especially hard as it comes on top of other losses.

“I lost my mother and before I lost my mother, my sister (to) suicide. Now this.”

He said he’s trying to stay strong for the sake of his two other children.

A teen charged in the shooting stared at the floor for much of his first court appearance Monday.

The tall, thin 17-year-old, wearing an orange jumpsuit, his legs and hands shackled, was brought into a packed courtroom in Meadow Lake – a community about 350 kilometres south of La Loche.

He spoke in a soft voice as he was asked whether he understood he is not to contact anyone involved.

“There’s to be no phone calls, no letters, no getting messages to any of these people or their families,” said Judge Janet McIvor.

“There’s to be no contact at all.”

The teen, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is to be held in custody until his next court appearance Feb. 22.

He faces four counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder.

McIvor placed a publication ban on the names of the injured.

Donna Johnson with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education said no decision had been made and the wishes of residents will be considered.

“We’ll work with them together to determine what plan will go forward to ensure there is a school facility that meets the community’s needs,” she said in a teleconference from Regina.

The school was built in 1974 and underwent extensive renovations in 2006.

Both the high school and the nearby elementary building are closed indefinitely. The grade school is being used as a crisis response centre.

Leonard Montgrand, executive director of the La Loche Friendship Centre, said he doesn’t think the school needs to be torn down.

“It’s not where it happened that’s the underlying root of all this,” said Montgrand, who runs youth intervention and family programs. “It’s why it happened – and it could have happened anywhere.”

Montgrand’s son was in the school during the shooting.

“For him to go back there, it’s going to be hard on him.

And … to relive his memories is probably going to be hard on him also. But do we have the funds? Do we have the capability? Where would the students go … in the interim?” he asked.

Montgrand suggested that perhaps the answer should be left to students.

“Some of the young people have said to me that by tearing it down, are we getting rid of everything that happened? Are we not going to learn anything from this?”

Preparing to leave the Den

After 14 years of running the Wolf’s Den restaurant, Harry and Yvonne Ochsner are putting the establishment up for sale.

vonne Ochsner remembers driving home from the Whitehorse airport one day about 14 years ago, in tears.

She was picking up her father, visiting from Switzerland, when she ran into another Swiss man who owned a restaurant down south.

The man made a grim prediction – that the restaurant Yvonne planned on opening with her husband, Harry, wouldn’t make it past six months.

“That really motivated us, though,” Yvonne said.

“We knew we could do it.”

Fourteen years later, the owners of the Wolf’s Den restaurant are looking to exit the restaurant business – on their own terms.

The business has been for sale for the past year but neither Harry nor Yvonne is in any rush to close it down, they say.

“If it sells this year, that’s great, but if it doesn’t we’ll keep going,” Harry said.

Yvonne, who had run a courier business in Zurich, spoke little to no English. Harry, a carpenter by trade, couldn’t cook.

They went back to Switzerland with plans of returning to Canada and opening a restaurant.

Yvonne wanted to spend a month in the Yukon during the winter, first, to get a feeling for what that would be like.

January 2000 featured both extremes in temperatures. It was -25 C one week and 6 C the next.

“I figured it’s probably something I could live with,” she said.

Working 16- to 18-hour days in the summer, they rarely had time off. It took them 10 years before they could take a holiday

together, one of the reasons they’re selling the restaurant.

“We’re not getting any younger,” Harry said.

“We can’t spend any time together. We can’t go hunting or fishing,” Yvonne added.

“I really want to go up the Dempster Highway and to Dawson City but we don’t have time.

If you run a restaurant for 13, 14 years, it’s very demanding.”

They say it’s the customers they’ll miss the most, once the Wolf’s Den has been sold.

One of their longest-running customers, another Swiss couple, came in for the first time in Dec. 2002.

They kept speaking to Yvonne in English, despite knowing her issues with the language.

One day, the man ordered rosti – a Swiss dish similar to a potato pancake – and pronounced the word in perfect German.

“He told us they were Swiss but wanted me to keep practising my English,” Yvonne said.

“That’s exactly what I needed.”

“We all have families ourselves, so wanted to share that community spirit and the idea of working for something,” she said.

“Not every time you work you get money... I want my children to be able to experience the good things you get from working for free.”

The event’s website is back up and running at www.frostbitemusicsociety.com. Anyone interesting in volunteering at the festival can get more information there.

Tickets for Friday and Saturday nights can be bought together in advance for $50.

Otherwise they will be sold for $30 a night at the door.

Advance tickets are being sold by the Yukon Arts Centre and Arts Underground, or on the Frostbite website.

Tickets for Sunday’s kids event cost $10 a family and will only be sold at the door.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My brother-in-law has a habit of sending me a text or email with simply “Hey” as the message.

If he calls and leaves a voice message, it is always, “Hey. Call me back.”

He never says why he is calling. It is almost invariably to complain about a poisonous relationship or a horrible

decision, and to ask for advice — which he promptly refuses to take. (No, you should not bail out your girlfriend after she robbed you.)

If I don’t reply, he continues to simply text “Hey.” He’s a sweet soul, but he’s hopeless and I don’t have time for his drama. I have two kids and I’m a full-time student.

May I just ignore him?

“That was a good game out there. It really had a playoff feel to it: two teams heading tine same direction, wanting the same prize,” said Huskies head coach Michael Tuton. “Tonight it was just a great atmosphere and we were happy to be in it. We were OK being down a couple goals going into the third because it was time to see what we’ve got, see what we can come out to do.

“I’m super proud of the way we came out in the third. We didn’t end up completing the comeback, but we didn’t give up either. There was a good lapse in the first period where we could have hung her up and

called it a day and they could have walked all over us.”

The opening period of the series was the fastest and hardest hitting so far this season.

Players on both sides bent over for face-offs huffing and puffing for air.

Saturday’s first period was also fast – in terms of goals.

The Regals snapped three in 70 seconds for a 4-2 lead.

“Obviously we would have like to come away with both wins. We kind of got in a hole tonight and tried to dig ourselves out right down to the wire and weren’t able to do it,” said Huskies assistant captain Derek Klassen. “But that’s good.

We have a couple more weeks before we play some games that really, really matter, so it was good to get a couple games in this weekend.”

After six games this season, Klassen leads the team in scoring with three goals and nine assists. The forward notched four assists against the Regals.

Huskies forward Kane Dawe sniped two goals Friday and now has seven points on the season. Ted Stephens posted three points with two goals Saturday and sits with eight points in total.

Captain Evan Campbell racked up three assists over the weekend and scored his team’s final goal on Saturday – his first of the season – and has eight points total.

“They were both really even games. Yesterday we flew up so our legs were a little slow to start, but every period was a close battle that could have gone either way,” said Regals captain Andy Welsh. “They had chances tonight and we had chances to score last night.

It was two even games and it worked out perfect. We got a split; both teams got a win.”

The Regals, who won the Coy Cup in 2010, weren’t able to bring their full line-up to Whitehorse over the weekend. But that’s just the nature of senior men’s AA hockey, said Welsh.

“Road trips in senior hockey – it’s always tough to get all your players to go,” he said.

“Some guys had commitments they couldn’t get out of. But we managed to get enough players – nine forwards and five D – to come up. That’s just enough to make it work; anything less and I think we would have been in trouble.”

The home team wasn’t much better off, missing players to injuries and prior commitments.

Gone were assistant captain Jared Tuton, former pro Kevin Petovello, Colin Dendys, Kaleb Dawe and Joe Densmore, who

was leading the team with nine points before the weekend.

“We’re missing a few guys out of the line-up, which hurts,” said Klassen. “We’re playing with 10 forwards and five D. When you get into a game with lots of power plays and penalty kills, guys start to get worn down by the end of the weekend. But that’s something we need to get used to if we’re going to keep moving on. It’s a good test for us.”

The Huskies’ bench also got shorter during the series. Goalie Brad Gustafson left Saturday’s game after the first period with a broken finger from a slap shot.

Whitehorse’s J.J. Gainsforth,

who was in net for Friday’s win, went in for the last two periods.

“I was kind of thrown in the fire there,” said Gainsforth. “I had to put my head on and get out there.”

“This weekend was a big test for us. To respond as a team and go down, let in three goals in the second period last night and come out and close the door in the third to win the game – that’s huge for us,” he added.

f all the stops across Canada made by Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour, Whitehorse was the hardest to leave, said Sportsnet/CBC sportscaster Ron MacLean.

“We did a little bit of a staff party yesterday. The folks who put on this whole festival … they go to all these stops along the way and this is the one they don’t want to leave,” said MacLean. “People really are sad we have to pull out tomorrow. That’s the first time that’s happened. In the two years we’ve done the show, the crew has never wanted to stay. That’s the ultimate compliment.”

(Take that, Sarnia, Ont.) Yukoners came out in scores to celebrate all things hockey over the weekend on Whitehorse’s Front Street. There was ball hockey, table hockey, videogame hockey. Former NHLers Darcy Tucker and Geoff Sanderson hobnobbed in the crowd. A minor hockey team got their photo with the Stanley Cup. Kids got free memorial jerseys.

It was a slice of heaven for any hockey fan.

For MacLean, who lived in the Whitehorse community of Hillcrest from age four to eight in the mid ‘60s, it was a trip down memory lane.

MacLean played his first hockey in Whitehorse as a boy and last week returned to the very same rink in Hillcrest he first put stick to puck for a bit of shinny with youngsters.

“It was really hard to believe it was 50 years ago I was skating on that very same patch of ice,” said MacLean.

The nostalgia continued …

“The two teachers I had a Christ the King Elementary – Clare MacKenzie Stark was out yesterday, and today Marcella Brown, who was Mrs. Rosen when I was in Grade 1 – were both here,” added MacLean. “It was incredible to see them.

“Then I went to Takhini arena … and saw the Huskies and the team from Powell River last night.

They wanted to meet (Sportsnet host) Tara (Slone), they didn’t want to meet me. I talked them into meeting me. I had a great visit with them and that brought back vivid memories.”

“He’s exactly the same kid he was in Grade 2,” said Stark. “He was just precious then and he’s just precious now.”

Tucker had never been to the territory, but has his own Yukon connection. Tucker, who played 14 seasons in the NHL – eight with the Toronto Maple Leafs – won two Memorial Cups with Yukon’s Jarrett Deuling on the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL during the early ‘90s.

“I enjoy meeting and talking to different people and interesting individuals. That’s what this tour is all about: learning more about the communities and especially about minor hockey communities,” said Tucker. “This one has some good minor hockey behind it. I played with Jarrett Deuling in Kamloops as a Blazer and he grew up in this neck of the woods and played minor hockey up here. It’s been interesting learning about that.”

“Thanks for the hospitality, we’ve all enjoyed ourselves and I’d be back here any day,” he added.

Scotiabank, a co-sponsor of the event, donated $15,000 to the Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association. There were also boxes of memorial jerseys left over – about 400 – that will be distributed to the communities.

“It’s like, wow! What else can you say,” said Russ Smoler, president of Hockey Yukon. “Rogers has been outstanding – so has Scotiabank and Dodge – to put on a show like this for hockey and for the community has been great.”

Bryn Hoffman team selected for junior world skating championships Tom Patrick News Reporter

L

ast Wednesday at the National Skating Championships in Halifax, Whitehorse’s Bryn Hoffman and Alberta skating partner Bryce Chudak landed a spot on the podium – and on the junior worlds team.

With a silver medal performance last week, Hoffman and Chudak have been selected to represent Canada at the 2016 ISU Junior World Figure Skating Championships, Skate Canada announced on Sunday.

“Obviously we were super excited when we got the email,” said Hoffman. “We had a pretty good idea we were going to go because there are only three international junior Canadian pairs teams this year and there are three spots.

“But to actually see it on paper and on the Skate Canada website was pretty exciting.”

The junior worlds will take place March 14-20 in Debrecen, Hungary. Hoffman will be Yukon’s second skater to compete at the championship.

Whitehorse’s Matthew Powers competed at the 1991 junior worlds in male singles, coincidently also in Hungary – but in Budapest.

“We’re going to have a meeting with our coaches early next week and I’m sure we’re going to set some goals – more specific placement goals and

Yukon athletes have had great success qualifying for junior world championships as of late. Yukon’s Nadia Moser is currently in Romania to compete for Canada at the IBU Youth/Junior World Biathlon Championships. Just last week Yukon Ski Team’s Natalie Hynes and Kendra Murray were named to Canada’s team bound for the FIS Nordic World Junior/U23 Ski Championships next month, also in Romania.

The Hoffman-Chudak team, who placed seventh at last year’s nationals, live and train in Calgary where Hoffman attends the University of Calgary.

“We get this week off training, which is super nice – to get caught up on school and stuff,” said the Whitehorse-born Hoffman. “Next week we’re right back at it.”

ukonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s snowshoe team bound for the 2016 Arctic Winter Games has some big shoes to fill. Pardon the expression.

Yukon snowshoe teams have won 14 medals at each of the last three Arctic Games with five gold in 2014 and 2012, and six gold in 2010. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good team. The kids

are all set,â&#x20AC;? said head coach Don White. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What we need to work on now for the next couple months is strength and speed and tactics â&#x20AC;Ś They need to understand when to push and how hard to push.

One thing they all fell down on (in the final trial race) was cutting the corners. They ran farther than they needed to. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a variety of things.â&#x20AC;?

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Health and Social Development, the incumbent is responsible for collaborating with other governments (Yukon, Federal and First Nation) to assist in the strategic development of Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, framework development and implementation. The position also requires to provide frontline emotional support to Indian Residential School claimants for the Yukon Region. The services of the support worker will include, but will not be limited to, providing a variety of frontline safety supports and coordination services directly to claimants. These services will be available before, during and after the claims process. By providing support and/or obtaining legal assistance for the claimants; assists claimants to understand his/her rights and responsibilities in the process; network and relationship building with private and government agencies, First Nations and lawyers. Responds to problems and special needs caused by communication barriers which exist between First Nation claimants and the judicial system. Maintains daily, weekly and monthly statistical forms; daily records and logs; monthly reports; and filing system for the program and ensure that all such records are kept accurate, up-to date and in strictest confidence. The position will also assist in supporting individuals that are learning about the Indian Residential School experience. The individual has to be an Indian Residential School former student or an intergenerational survivor.

Like a butterfly in flight You drifted to paradise A journey to the rainbow’s end Leaving broken hearts to mend It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Margaret Jess Van der Veen. Margaret was born in Fort William, Ontario and passed away peacefully in Vernon, British Columbia. In her younger days, Nana was an avid curler who also spent a tremendous amount of time golfing, bowling, knitting and gardening. Margaret and her husband Pieter founded the Talbot Arm Motel which grew into a thriving business now operational for over 50 years. Margaret was a proprietor for the Talbot Arm Motel in which she took on the duties of cooking, cleaning, pumping gas, doing books, you name it; she could do it. During her lifetime Nana was a member of the Royal Purple and the Lion’s Club. Margaret is predeceased by her husband of 58 years Pieter Van der Veen and is survived by her sisters Diane Olynyk, Charlotte Tetreault and Helen Hindmarsh, sister-inlaw Addie Jackson, son Garry Van der Veen (Sandra Armstrong) and daughter Karen Van der Veen-McNabb (Bob McNabb).

Her memory will be cherished by her granddaughters Sharla Zandvliet, Riana Temple-Morrison (John Morrison) and Shelbree Schieder; grandsons Bronc Van der Veen (Laura Van der Veen) and Chance Temple (Karen Jahraus); great grandchildren Dana Tremblay, Candace Tremblay, Gabrielle Schnieder, Hannah Zandvliet, Stella Zandvliet, Garrin Schnieder and Lukas Temple.
