An outstanding principal De Wit named by The Learning Partnership talk to each other via Skype or other methods of communication. They research spinal cord injuries, their treatment and how technology is changing in the treatment of patients.

“When I visited the classroom, each student group called me over to talk about the project. They were excited to talk with the ambassador and learn about spinal cord injuries and the treatments available,” de Wit said. “This personal connection allowed them to do learning in a dynamic and different way that textbooks don’t provide.”

He will be honoured at the Canada’s Outstanding Principals gala in Toronto on Feb. 23. As part of that event, he and other nominees will take part in a management leadership course at the University of Toronto during that week.

One student said, when asked about the course work: “I wouldn’t change a thing. The experience was life-changing and very inspirational.”

De Wit said that’s his goal for students – to make them difference-makers, instead of note-takers.

“I’m proud to be the principal here,” he said.

Dave de Wit is Canada’s outstanding principal.

The principal of Rick Hansen Secondary has been named one of the country’s top principals by The Learning Partnership, a non-profit organization that focuses on excellence in public education.

De Wit became principal of Rick Hansen in April, 2014 after eight years in charge of Abbotsford Continuing Education, which under his watch became the Bakerview Centre for Learning. Prior to coming to Abbotsford in 2006, he was a teacher at an alternate school in North Vancouver, and later a vice-principal.

It has been a wild week for the members of Abbotsford’s Interfaith Refugee Project set to welcome a Syrian refugee family to Canada Friday afternoon.

On Monday, the group held a regular meeting to prepare for the expected arrival of refugees in late February at the very earliest. But that night, an unexpected call relayed the news that the young family would be arriving later this week.

The two dozen members of the group quickly sprung into action to have everything in place for the family, a 28-yearold man, a 26-year-old woman and their nine-month-old

baby daughter. The three had been staying in a refugee camp in Jordan.

The husband and wife had previously attended university in Iraq, and the man speaks at least some English. Beyond those details though, the group knows little of the incoming refugees, who will stay with a local family in the days after their arrival.

“We were in total shock because we thought we had at least a month,” said Donald Strangway, one of the members with the group.

Nevertheless, the week has been exciting, he said, and a diverse swath of Abbotsford has laid the groundwork to ease the family’s transition into life in Canada.

From Sikh groups to Muslim organizations and Christian churches, Strangway says help for the refugees has come from across faith and cultural lines.

“The project has caught fire – everybody is enthused,” he said.

The group has raised just over $28,000 toward the $32,000 that will be required to fulfill the project’s 60 per cent of the family’s first-year costs under the blended visa office referral initiative, through which the sponsorship is taking place.

(The government covers the other 40 per cent of the costs).

B.C. Views With unlicensed marijuana dispensaries popping up in urban areas and thousands of unregulated medical licences for home growing still in legal limbo, the Trudeau government is starting work on its promise to legalize recreational use.

Marijuana was a media darling in the recent election, but meeting in Vancouver with provincial ministers last week, federal Health Minister Jane Philpott found herself preoccupied with issues deemed more urgent.

These include shifting our post-war acute hospital model to community primary care, tackling aboriginal health care needs, pooling pharmaceutical purchases to slow rising costs, and meeting an urgent Supreme Court of Canada directive to legalize assisted dying.

At the closing news conference in

Vancouver, Philpott was asked how recreational marijuana should be sold. Licensed medical growers want exclusive rights do it by mail as permitted by the Harper government, another measure forced by our high court. That would shut out the rash of supposedly medical storefronts, which city halls in Vancouver and elsewhere imagine they can regulate.

Philpott said the question is “premature” and federal-provincial justice ministers were dealing with it at their meeting.

Vancouver descended into a pot store freefor-all due to benign neglect from council and police, and Victoria isn’t far behind.

Vancouver Coun. Kerry Jang, a rare voice of reason in the Big Smoke, has protested dispensaries using street hawkers to attract young buyers, and pot stores setting up near schools.

Other communities, more aware of their limitations, have resisted issuing business licences. One recent proposal in the Victoria suburb of View Royal came from a fellow who insisted marijuana extract had cured his cancer. This is typical of claims that pro-

liferate on the Internet, and is one of many warning signs about dispensaries that put up red cross signs to sell pot products with exotic names.

Other communities, more aware of their limitations, have resisted issuing business licences.

B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake was more forthcoming a few days earlier, responding to a Vancouver reporter who judged marijuana more interesting than his just-announced plan to hire 1,600 more nurses by the end of March.

Lake noted that Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is keen to sell marijuana through the province’s monopoly liquor stores. B.C.’s government liquor store union has also endorsed this idea, forming an unlikely alliance with non-union private stores to get in on

the action.

“There are public health officials that I’ve talked to who say that the co-location of marijuana and liquor sales is not advisable from a public health perspective,” Lake said.

“I think whatever we do it has to be highly regulated, quality control has to be excellent and above all we must protect young people.”

Yes, liquor stores check ID. But the notion that marijuana might be sold next to beer and vodka in government stores deserves sober second thought, and serious scientific work of the kind that has shown damage to developing brains from teenage marijuana use.

Of course, all of this urban hand-wringing over pot stores ignores the de facto legalization that has existed across B.C. for decades.

For the record, I’ll restate my long-standing position that legalization is the only logical answer. I’ll say the same about other drugs that drive most B.C. crime, but that’s a subject for another day.

letters Adequate income instead of temporary shelter Why, if a million dollars a day is pumped into Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, does the very apparent misery of that neighbourhood only increase?

Have we adopted the DTES template in Abbotsford? We know that B.C. Housing tax dollars are funding six months of “oversight” for the Riverside 40-bed shelter. That $450,000 divided by six months is $75,000, which in turn divided by 30 days in a month is $2,500.

Divided by 40 individuals, that is $60 per person per day. If I were to suggest we instead direct this $60/day to the person in need, many may suggest I have taken leave of my senses. I would be informed those same people would squander their $1,800 a month by living a lifestyle we could never condone.

Are we sure of that?

I believe an adequate income could instead provide options that may turn an individual’s life around. Can we be assured that members

of organizations receiving many millions of tax dollars are living a lifestyle exactly to our standards? People who work for those organiza-

tions may drink alcohol, they may even smoke pot. One thing we can be assured of is that they have a warm bed at night.

How about we do a better job of getting tax dollars to those who do not have that warm bed.

claims for 2015 where B.C. residents tried to scam the system last year.

They include: Dish Dodger – A man claimed his crash injuries were so severe he couldn’t help his wife wash the dishes, but investigators later got footage of him lifting a box of heavy floor tiles at his work site. He was fined $1,500 for fraud.

Double Dipper – A Vancouver woman who claimed she couldn’t go back to work because of her crash injuries. An anonymous tip helped investigators confirm she had worked since the crash, collecting two paycheques – one from her employer and one from ICBC. Her fraud conviction netted her a one-year driving suspension and $1,750 fine.

Mom Cover-up – A Vancouver island mother claimed her

Audi was stolen and crashed and that her sons with access to the car were home.

But phone records put one son at the scene of the crash and BC Ferry terminal cameras caught the same son buying a ticket.

Both were convicted of giving false statements. The mom was fined $2,300, while the son was fined $1,150 and got a oneyear suspension, plus a 90-day jail term because his licence was already suspended.

Dash Cam Disclosure – A Lower Mainland man caught another vehicle sideswiping his on dash cam video and excitedly shared the footage with ICBC. His claim was denied because the video also showed he wasn’t actually driving, as he’d claimed.

An unlicensed driver was behind the wheel.

Electronic Exposure – A Fraser Valley man

was busted by his own BMW after he claimed the car was stolen and burnt to a crisp in a nearby park.

The vehicle’s technology proved the man’s key fob had been used at the time of the incident, contrary to what he claimed.

Bus Blues – A bus hit a parked fire truck while turning in a bus loop. After all passengers exited and the driver exchanged information with the fire truck driver, another man claimed to have been on board the bus and later sought compensation.

Security camera video showed the man was never on the bus. He was fined and jailed one night for fraud.

ICBC conducted 7,500 fraud investigations last year and its special investigations unit has secured 550 fraud convictions since 2010.

Organized fraud includes planned staged collisions and “jumpin” schemes where phony passengers falsely claim to have been in a vehicle that crashed.

New rules for film companies TV and movie production companies will have to consult and inform the public before receiving a permit to film in Abbotsford once an amended special events bylaw is adopted by council next week.

Council, which unanimously voted to give the revised bylaws three readings at Monday’s meeting, heard from staff that consultation was previously done on an “ad hoc” basis, resulting in some neighbourhood disruptions.

The bylaw means film companies must go through the same health and safety procedures as those who stage other special events in the city. More than two dozen film shoots took place in Abbotsford in 2015, more than double than in 2014.

The move brings the city in line with special events guidelines established by the province in 2014.

The decision is expected to cost the city, which sets the Abbotsford Police Department’s budget, $86,000 each year.

In a report to council, city manager George Murray said the move was one more instance of federal and provincial governments downloading costs to municipalities, who have no choice but to pick up the tab.

In his report, he noted that cities take heat for increasing taxes to address issues that have been pushed onto municipalities by senior governments, homelessness being one such example.

“This is another download from the provincial to the local government and we’re the end of the line,” Mayor Henry Braun said.

Council voted unanimously to support a letter sent to the province by the District of Kent, and to send copies to an array of local politicians, including local MLAs Simon Gibson, Mike de Jong and Darryl Plecas.

He said Bateman was the perfect person to contact for a way to illustrate the spirit of the BC Games. Carlton contacted Bateman’s studio, and the famous artist agreed to put something together.

In December, Carlton and a group of Games officials traveled to his studio on Saltspring Island to see the finished work.

“All we gave him was the theme and he chose the eagle to represent it,” he said, of the finished painting. “He explained the eagle is appropriate because it’s a common bird in our area and how it’s known for its strength, beauty, and

“It dates back to my days in high school in Ontario when he was the art teacher at the school I was attending,” he said.

Carlton said the eagle has become the official image of the theme of the Games, and locals will become familiar with it.

“When you’re sitting in Robert Bateman’s studio and he reveals something he created for you, it’s a feeling of absolute joy, awe, appreciation and humility,” he said. “The painting is beautiful, and we want to infuse this image into our theme of “Rise above. Reach beyond” to inspire competitors and everyone involved with the Games.”

Carlton said a replica image of the painting will be on display at several areas before and during the Games.

The Abbotsford Police Department wants the public to know that a phone scam that impacted locals back in September appears to be once again targeting Abbotsford residents.

Back in September, a man posing as an employee of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) nearly scammed an Abbotsford couple out of $1,500 before the APD got involved and the transaction cancelled.

The scam has resurfaced locally, after a local resident received a call from a man claiming to work for the CRA and identifying himself as a police officer on Jan. 22. The man then proceeded to advise the victim that he was behind in taxes and needed to pay the amount right away by wiring the money to avoid being arrested and spending the weekend in jail.The man complied and subsequently lost just over $2,000.

“We are reminding citizens that police aren’t used to collect money, nor does the CRA call and pressure an individual to wire money right away to avoid being arrested,” stated the APD’s Paul Walker.

“Citizens are reminded to contact police should anything seem suspicious with the phone call you are receiving. Don’t disclose any personal information over the phone to these unknown persons and don’t be afraid to terminate the call and contact the CRA directly through the numbers available to the public via their website to confirm the validity of the call.”

In August, the CRA issued a public notice warning of such scams, saying the caller usually says taxes are owed and payment must be made immediately or they could face charges, jail or deportation.

The CRA advised that anyone getting such a call should hang up and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501.

The CCS office was broken into on Jan. 16, with intruders stealing gift cards, donated prizes and cash.

Creating awareness of our aging community Abbotsford is abundant with beautiful landscapes and a remarkable, diverse sense of community. This, according to Christina Ragneborg who was born, raised, and has worked here her entire life.

As the director of seniors services for Abbotsford Community Services (ACS), Ragneborg works with seniors, their families, and persons with disabilities.

The two-day Aging Together Abbotsford Conference on Feb. 12 and 13 is an opportunity to learn about health and wellness for seniors and baby boomers.

There will be educational workshops, expert speakers, as well as vendors and exhibitors that promote a full and healthy lifestyle for older adults.

“The intention is to create a conference that raises the awareness of our aging community and provides opportunities for individuals to engage in positive and informative interactions,” she says.

During her 36 years at ACS, she says there hasn’t been a typical day on the job because she never knows who will walk through the door, but she is always happy to meet them.

“Individuals will have access to educational information and resources, build relationships, and expand their knowledge of emerging trends on aging and how we as a community can come together to respond to those trends.”

“One of the most rewarding parts Christina Ragneborg is the of my job is helping individuals director of senior services for find a solution to a problem … Abbotsford Community Services. and to see how much that relieves the worry,” she says. “It is very fulfilling to know that Ragneborg says that every day she connects with indiyou have had a positive impact on someone’s life. Ragneborg takes pride in staying informed on the needs and issues of the aging community, which is why ACS decided to host an event to provide educational opportunities for the public. By 2036, it is expected that almost 20 per cent of the population (one in five residents) will be over the age of 65 (2011 Census).

In July 2014, Ragneborg applied for a grant through the New Horizons for Seniors Program provided by Employment and Social Development Canada. The grant helps communities increase their capacity to address local issues pertaining to seniors and are eligible to receive up to $25,000 per year, per organization.

“We were successful with the grant application and started the planning for the Aging Together Abbotsford conference,” Ragneborg says.

How to build and maintain bones Osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become weakened and brittle over time, affects millions of people across the globe. The International Osteoporosis Foundation says an osteoporosis-related fracture occurs roughly once every 3 seconds, accounting for more than 8.9 million fractures a year.

Bone health is important at any age, but it is particularly crucial as a person gets older. Without a strong framework of bones, the body collapses on itself and rates of fracture increase. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep and maintain strong bones.

Bones are largely made up of a protein called collagen, which is bound together by calcium and other trace minerals. Vitamin D and calcium work in concert, with vitamin D helping the body to absorb calcium so it can find its way into bones. Ex-

every day, and between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily.

Dairy products, such as low- and nonfat milk, yogurt and cheese, are high in calcium. Dark green vegetables and almonds contain calcium in smaller amounts. Obtaining calcium and vitamin D through natural sources is always preferable, but doctors may suggest supplementation if foods are not providing what a per-

son needs to meet the minimum recommended levels.

Exercise is another important component of building strong bones. The National Osteoporosis Foundation says 30 minutes of exercise each day can help.

Higher-intensity exercises should be mixed with lower-intensity workouts for the best results.

Weight-bearing exercises, such as hiking, dancing and stair-climbing, can build between 1 and 3 percent of bone.

An exercise regimen also should include lifting weights or using resistance bands.

Activities that promote good posture and flexibility can help improve balance and alignment of the body. Perform stretches smoothly and slowly after exercising to maintain your range of motion.

Quitting smoking also can promote strong bones. Smoking has been linked to poor skeletal health in both men and women, and the longer one smokes, the greater one’s risk for fracture.

Kayli Sartori scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds on Friday, but the Griffins exploded in the fourth quarter for 32 points to pick up the win.

“They got a six- to eightpoint lead with five minutes to, and we had to open things up, and that’s not really our style,” said women’s head coach Al Tuchscherer. “They’re a veteran team, and they know how to close out games. We’re still trying to figure that out, unfortunately.”

The Griffins again outlasted the Cascades on Saturday, outscoring UFV 42-30 in the second half to earn the win.

Hometown Hockey announces special guests for Abbotsford Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour is heading to Abbotsford on Feb. 20 and 21, and the weekend celebration announced its special guests for its first-ever local stop.

The hockey festival will feature an appearance by former

Vancouver Canucks forward Brendan Morrison, a performance by country musician Chad Brownlee, and Canadian television icon Ron MacLean.

The two-day hockey celebration occurs at Exhibition Park from noon to 6 p.m. on Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. until the end of the double-header game

on Feb. 21 between the Canucks and the Colorado Avalanche.

The free hockey-themed weekend will feature games, activities, live local entertainment and food trucks. Activities include: Rog ers Share Everything Zone: Fans can engage in unique interactive experiences;

S c o t i a b a n k Community Locker Room: Featuring meet and greets with NHL Alumni, interactive games and a Scotia Hockey Club commemorative jersey giveaway for youth 16 and under; The Dodge Stow ‘n’ Go Challenge as well as a chance to win a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan and $5,000 for

a local minor hockey association; Samsung’s The Situation Room: fans can test their skills against a series of hockey plays, just like NHL officials in this interactive studio; Sportsnet Be a Broadcaster: Call an NHL game highlight reel alongside Sportsnet anchor Evanka Osmak;

Playstation video games, and ball hockey.

Local hockey teams also have an opportunity to win the Cheer Like Never Before contest. Teams can upload a video of their team cheer, with the top five vote-getters invited to take part in the festivities when the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour visits Abbotsford.

The winning team in each town will then be in the running to win the trip of a lifetime, including: a trip to an NHL game, VIP Game Day Experience, and perform their team cheer in an NHL dressing room.

Abbotsford is one of 24 stops on the tour.

The car that caught my eye was the Toyota Kikai concept that was making its North American debut. The wonderful thing about this futuristic car is that it has many design elements from cars of the past. The suspension, engine and structure of the Kikai are exposed, kind of like hotrods from the 1950s. The futuristic part of the car is the seamless way it all comes together and beautifully crafted. Inside the driver sits in the middle of the car with two passengers, one either side of the centre seat. This provides transportation for three people in a limited space, plus the side passengers get an amazing amount of legroom.

Kidding! No, they showcased a concept van called Budd-e. With intuitive connection between the vehicle, the driver and the world of things, this van promises to be your buddy or Budd-e. The Budd-e will be able to detect hand gestures to change controls inside the car, no need for knobs or dials. In addition, the driver only needs to say “hello Budd-e”, the same way Android users can say “Okay Google” to access things on a smartphone. Using these commands, the driver can use the connected van to change other connected devices inside and outside of the van. For example, the driver can tell Budd-e to set the air conditioning at home before the vehicle arrives. In addition, VW claims that this van is all electric and capable of running up to 500km on a single charge. The body is built on VW’s modular architecture, so it could actually be put into production…someday.

LAW Robert (Bob) January 8, 1938 ~ January 20, 2016 It is with fond memories and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Husband, Father, Grandpa and friend, at age 78. Bob will be dearly missed by his wife Patricia, married for 50 years, his daughters, Carolynne and Allison, his son David, his granddaughter Lola and sister Barbara, as well many relatives and friends across the country.

Doug – “I have had a good life and a wonderful family!”

Dad passed away peacefully at Astoria Suites in Origins at Longwood in Nanaimo. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years Beryl, family Murray and Isabella, Roy and Sharon, Carol and John, Bev and Nick; grandchildren Cory and Kim, Bob, Robert, Shylah and Dan, Emily and Sean, Sydney and Luuk, Samantha, Jackson; great-grandchildren Aiden, Bria, and Max. Dad was born in Cloverdale and grew up in New Westminster.

He served in WW II. He met Mom in 1946 while attending UBC where he graduated with a BSc in Agriculture. They married July 28, 1951. He worked as manager for B&K Milling in Langley, and for the Ministry of Agriculture as a District Agriculturalist in Salmon Arm and Nanaimo. He was very involved with helping others, especially youth and 4H. In 1963 he returned to UBC and received his Master’s Degree in Poultry Sciences. In 1966 the family moved to Abbotsford and for the next 20 years Dad was a Poultry Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture.

Dad served 10 years with the Abbotsford School Board and while there chaired a research group for a college in the Fraser Valley. Fraser Valley College was created in 1974, and he was elected the first chairman, which he served as for 5 years. In June 2014, on the 40th anniversary of the University of the Fraser Valley, Dad received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university he helped found.

Upon retirement at age 63, Mom and Dad moved to Parksville where they enjoyed a long and happy retirement. He was always the first person to offer to help anyone, and was a great storyteller.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Astoria and Origins for the wonderful love and care they provide for Dad and Mom and the family.

A Service of Remembrance and Celebration will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, 1 pm at Brechin United Church, 1998 Estevan Road, Nanaimo.

Gwen passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2016 with her daughter Joanne (Robertson) at her side. Gwen will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, extended family members, and longtime friends from Mission BC. She is predeceased by her loving husband Art Hanson (19272000).

Gwen was born on May 25th 1926 and grew up in New Westminster, BC where she met and married Art. They moved to Mission in the 1950s where Art began his career as a high school teacher and Gwen worked as an elementary school secretary. Both Gwen and Art were socially active members of the community in Mission, participating in the Kinsmen Club, enjoying square dancing and bridge, and entertaining friends and family at their summer trailer in Birch Bay, WA. Gwen worshipped every Sunday at All Saints Church and was a dedicated member of the Anglican Church Women’s group for many years. In 2012, Gwen moved from Mission to West Vancouver where she was well taken care of by the dedicated and loving staff at the Capilano Care Centre.

A funeral service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church (33077 2nd Ave., Mission, BC) on Saturday, February 6th at 11:00 a.m. The service will be followed by a tea and lunch reception at 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia or to All Saints Anglican Church.
