WynnWood sawmill sold to Canfor

Same employees. Same management team. Same products. That was the message that Wynndel Box and Lumber Ltd. CEO Michael Combs delivered to the sawmill employees Jan. 21 when he announced the sale of the mill to Canfor Corporation.

“Our first five-year plan stated a goal to save the jobs in the mill,” Combs told the Advance on Friday morning. “The priority in our second five-year plan was to secure those jobs for the future. And we have accomplished that.”

For its part, Canfor gets a profitable sawmill, access to timber rights and an increased ability to produce a broader mix of higher value specialty products.

“This acquisition will further increase our focus on specialty products worldwide,” Canfor Corporation president and CEO Don Kayne said on Jan. 21. “We are pleased to further grow and diversify the product line we are able to provide to our global customers, and to welcome our new colleagues at WynnWood to Canfor.”

While the Wynndel operation has become profitable under Combs’ management, long-term viability depends on secure sources of wood fibre and injections of capital.

Key of She is conducted by Anita Stushnoff and accompanied by Monte Anderson. The ensemble, which has been in existence for nearly a decade, was founded by Leah Jones. There are currently 11 singers in the ensemble.

The repertoire for Circle of Song includes familiar popular tunes like “Blue Moon”, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, “Fields of Gold” and “And So It Goes”. Contemporary choral works will include “Hold Me, Rock Me”, “Prayer of the Children”, “The Circle” and “One Voice”.

Instrumental features include Gail Southall and Anita Stushnoff in a raucous piano duet titled “Fiddle Faddle”, a lilting jazzy selection by Vicki Blake Thompson on flute, and Shirley Cameron on an electronic woodwind instrument with Sue Jorgenson on guitar in a Celtic song. The program features members of the Key of She in small group and solo work as well as the full ensemble.

Circle of Song is a powerful metaphor for the women of this ensemble who love weaving their voices together. As member Trish Bartlett put it, when comparing singing alone to singing in a group, “It is better by far to stand in a circle of friends and blend my breath, my voice, and soul with all of theirs until we are truly singing the same song.”

“Our primary Achilles heel is fibre supply,” he said. “All mills face the same constraints. But we have one of the smallest forest licenses in the area, which produces about 65,000 cubic metres of fibre annually. We process more than 200,000 a year, so we have constantly had to supplement our own supply by going to bid sales, not all of which offer the quality of wood we need.”

With more than one million cubic metres of fibre supply in the Kootenay area, Canfor has the ability to provide WynnWood with all the fibre it needs.

“Last year we went 10 weeks with no second shift because we didn’t have enough logs,’ Combs said.

“Our second major need is money to upgrade our mill — it requires a significant capital injection.”

A $1.5 million lumber drying kiln is scheduled for construction this spring, and more upgrades are anticipated.

“Canfor absolutely met every requirement we had,” Combs said. “It was so satisfying to get to know their people at the highest level, including the CEO and chairman of the board. We are the perfect fit.

Their mills produce primarily two-by-fours and they wanted to get into our business (which produces high-grade one-inch boards) to diversify their product mix.”

Monrad Wigen’s business started when he took delivery of a small portable sawmill in 1913. In the summers, he would use it to make thin boards used to construct wooden boxes and crates to supply the thriving Wynndel fruit industry. In winters, he moved his mill into the forest, where he cut railway ties.

Combs described Canfor Corporation as having much the same culture as WynnWood, with a commitment to its workers and the communities in which it operates.

“They want our people and product and we want the sawmill to stay,” he said.

Part of the sale conditions include retention of the current management team and that Combs, a California resident, continue in his role as CEO. Area residents will not likely notice any difference at the sawmill, he said.

“Same brand, same logo, same name, same people,” Combs said. “All jobs are safe. Nobody from Canfor is coming in to manage or supervise. Now we are going to be a much stronger company.”

Climate more important than trade To the Editor: Canada is the most investor-state dispute settlement-sued nation in the developed world. Canadian polices or decisions can be legal, fair and designed to effectively protect the environment or public health, and still face corporate lawsuits demanding hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation, for “loss of profits”.

Presently Canada is facing $2.6 billion in challenges for American corporations under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Is there a limit to how much money Canadian taxpayers can be sued for through the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS)? Is it a possibility that Canadians will be paying for loss-ofprofit court cases while suffering from the lack of affordable and sustainable social services?

Canada’s involvement with trade deals — such as NAFTA, the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) and foreign investment promotion and protection agreements (FIPA) — is highly influential on the world, successfully attaining the climate-change target of keeping global warming at the twodegree threshold. Presently, the trade deals are able to legally override any protective environmental laws, thus negating any nation’s climate-change targets and policies.

Climate-change thresholds must take precedence over trade deal economic profits. Canadian climate-change mitigation and adaptation, and clean renewable energy projects need to have legal protection stronger than the trade deals, and to be protected from being sued for loss of profits and/or being monetarily destroyed by corporate industry. Negotiations must be made

to impose tariffs on competing products on the merit of what product is more climate-friendly.

Security of Canadian land, food, water, resources and local jobs creates stability, sustainability and consistent employment income. The TPP opens up new laws for privatization and foreign investments to legally underbid local employment on health insurance, education, water treatment and maintenance, and it puts strict limits on how governments choose to protect the environment or create jobs. Allowing trade deals to underbid local economies reduces local residents to serfdom.

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, FIPAs and NAFTA’s Chapter 11 undermine Canadian democratic decision-making. ISDS gives investors extralegal rights to be compensated from loss of profits with no regard to the well-being of the community or environment involved. Financial insecurity, ill mental health, and longterm chaos are the consequences.

Planetary health and the Canadian economy need stability and democratic decision-making, not investor profits of disaster income, and legal corporate control of seeds, food supply, water, resource and energy. All countries must be allowed to patent new innovations, and not be limited to the control of American or Japanese innovators, with an eye to profit. A myriad of perspectives and solutions must be considered, not limited.

Trade often becomes predatory, greedily taking too much, in haste, and without ethical regard, leaving devastation. Every day, citizens are left with the responsibility of challenging and demanding responsibility from greed.

The climate-change crisis demands that humans evolve from the acquisition of wealth and power, to the higher standard of planetary health and nurturing stewardship. The trade deals that Canada signs on to must reflect these values and enforce them with enough legal power to override the trade deals and ISDS. Susan Eyre Yahk

Community keeps in touch with newspaper

To the Editor: Creston and community should be very thankful that we still have a hardcopy local paper. So many large papers are cutting back in our larger cities. I purchase mine at the drug store, grocery store or at the Advance office.

Many of us seniors who are not online keep in touch with our community through the hardcopy paper.

Films, social events and so on are noted there for us to be well informed. We cannot always go to the post office to know when people whom we know and regard have passed on.

I find it sad that in so many ways journalism has provided the wages for people to purchase homes, cars and all of life’s needs. These jobs will soon be cut in favour of a robot machine.

With all the new people coming into Canada, where are they going to work?

How can our university students pay off their loan money if there are no jobs for them? Those working for $10 an hour will never own a home.

The hardcopy of printed news will soon be like the dodo bird — just plain gone. Pity, I still like my comfortable chair, a cup of brew and rattle of my paper. There is no comfort in a small black screen that can go off with whatever its problem is. I can still read a paper by daylight or coal oil lamp if I have to.

So, my Creston friends, skip one coffee a week and buy a paper. Help keep Creston working. We must not lose another office on Canyon Street.

Besides, I want my paper and its grocery ads.

Who could imagine such a universe?

People blithely talk about evolution but what are they saying? They are saying that this immense universe happened through an unbelievable process that nobody can quite imagine, let alone figure out. Knowing this mystery in your bones is taking the backward step.

Taking the forward step is doing something in our lives. Backward stepping and forward stepping depend on each other.

When you realize this unity, nothing ever goes wrong. I don’t mean that you don’t get sick or die. It is still true that if you lose someone you love, your world comes to an end. But in the deepest sense, nothing ever goes wrong because you know that life and death are just the mountains walking.

Loss happens as we go forward in living, but we can get through it because gain and loss are always going on.

Everybody experiences them. So we say, “I’m OK. It’s hard, but I’m OK. ” We can do anything together because we know and accept that gain and loss are always going on.

Times now on our planet are difficult. But there is never a better time than a difficult time to meditate and develop Zen practice. It is in the hard

times that the depth of understanding and realization that practice delivers is fully realized. It’s funny, because I’ve noticed that when people are having a hard time they stop practicing.

They tell me that they haven’t been at Sakuraji for a while because the stuff that is happening in their lives distracts them and takes them away. They say they don’t have the time to do Zen practice.

I smile, and say, “I understand.” And I do. But actually it is the opposite. I too have been in terrible times when the only thing I could do was sit down and meditate. And meditation is what saved me because during those tough times, here I am, stable in my practice, holding a bigger vision, knowing how to manifest love and caring. We are all born with a desire to be a loving person, but it takes effort in practice. That is what Dogen is saying.

Sale looks like good news

I had heard a rumour about a pending announcement at Wynndel Box and Lumber, now known as WynnWood, but a call from CEO Michael Combs on Jan. 21 caught me by surprise.

First, congratulations are in order to the members of the Wigen family, who have worked, at times against the odds, to sustain the sawmill and forestry operations for over 102 years. It is a remarkable story, particularly in an industry that is often turbulent and affected by economic downswings, international trade agreements, environmental issues and market demand. That the onetime box mill has survived for this long is nothing short of miraculous.

In my first year at the Advance, I wrote a series of stories about the forest industry, and got to know a bit about our three local mills.

Crestbrook was still operating downtown, just south of Cook Street, leaving evidence on my car window on many mornings in the form of a thin coat of fly ash from the beehive burner. Wynndel Box and Lumber Ltd., operated by the Wigens, and J.H. Huscroft Ltd., under the ownership of Ken Huscroft and various family members, were thriving operations that were responsible for the incomes of a couple hundred men and women.

I met Jack and Bob Wigen at the time, and have visited the mill often over the years. In what us old-timers now refer to as the good old days, I was one of many who frequented the site where board off-cuts were dumped. Those offcuts, the trim ends of sawn and planed boards, were good kindling, but they were of good enough quality to make small projects with. In the log house I built, our sunroom featured lattice I made by cutting thin strips of

three-quarter-inch boards and nailing them into a crisscross pattern.

Log ends that fueled our woodstove were hauled from the pile in Wynndel or loaded straight from the Crestbrook site. If you knew

Lorne Eckersley someone at either mill, you simply drove up and helped yourself, no questions asked.

In recent years, Wynndel Box and Lumber fell on some tough times, and Michael Combs reminded me of our first meeting, when I told him I was expecting to have to write the sawmill’s obituary at any time. Combs was overly optimistic in the first meeting, having been presented by a pretty rosy picture by the hired mill manager of the day. When he, on his visits from California, dug more deeply into the operation, he discovered a financial mess, and it must have been tempting for him and the family owners to just organize an industrial sale and cash out the assets. But they were fully cognizant of the jobs that would be lost, and agreed to make changes in an effort to save the business.

The turnaround was remarkably fast, though I am sure it didn’t seem like it at the time. A new management team evolved as personnel changes were made, and the employees hunkered down and gave it their best effort. There was never a question of making a good product — they had that one advan-

tage to sustain their optimism.

Upgrades on equipment continued and then a drop in the Canadian dollar helped. Selling into the American market benefits when sales are made in U.S. dollars.

I have met regularly, if not often, with Combs over the years and come to enjoy his company, and his blunt honesty. Much of what I learned from him was off the record, but was never a cause for concern.

The job force was stabilized, wage increases helped keep good people from moving on.

The sale to Canfor of the mills’ assets and the company’s timber licences came as a result of the business’s need to either expand or find a suitable buyer. At the heart of the matter was the simple fact that WynnWood only produced about a third of the timber it used to make into high quality boards each year.

The open market is unpredictable, making it hard to plan in any meaningful way. Canfor became the best option, not least because it has licenses that allow it to cut about a million board feet of timber in the Kootenays annually, and it was exploring additional ways of putting that timber to its best use. At WynnWood, where good timber is made into great boards, Canfor can do just that.

Details are included in the story on page 1. I have looked at the story from every angle, and I can only say that I can’t find a downside. No jobs lost, access to more and better logs and an owner with the capacity to make technological improvements are all good news stories for a mill that has played such a large part in our local history. I hope all the stories I write about the operation in years to come prove me right.

She is involved in many activities at the community complex, including skating, swimming and gym workouts. It is not all fun, though; Kathy works in the Maid in Creston program, works with her friend Jim in the courier program, does cleaning at the store and still finds time for yoga and exercise classes and art projects.

These are her daytime activities. In the evenings, she bowls, plays bocce and T-ball and participates in rhythmic gymnastics. Kathy is a member of the Creston Special Olympics floor hockey team that has earned the right to go to the Special Olympics Canada (SOC) National Winter Games in Cornerbrook, N.L., in February.

Creston is sending two coaches and four athletes from the floor hockey team to this competition. Richard Chlopecki is the local co-ordinator and coach, and can be reached at 250-4020075. Support for this trip is always appreciated. Good luck to Kathy and her team members as they represent Creston in this national competition.

Summer birds sticking around through winter

Western meadowlarks are a common bird here in summer, breeding in farmland on the Kootenay River flats and on the Lister and Canyon district

bench lands. They find the manmade prairie-like landscape in these areas suitable for hunting ground insects, including grasshoppers, in various

stages of development. What is not so common, in fact very unusual, is to have even one meadowlark hanging out here in the winter. But two were

reported in the Dec. 27 Christmas Bird Count.

Our winters and winter conditions come earlier than places farther south. In past years, meadowlarks have been seen here in January.

The melodious meadowlark call (or song) has similarities to the early morning repertoire of a starling perched on an eavestrough preening its feathers in the warm, early morning sunrays. The whistled, flutelike notes sound a bit like those of the meadowlark. Once, when a starling was whistling away, someone asked me if it was a meadowlark calling.

Starlings are mimics.

Colourwise, of course, the meadowlark and starling are strikingly different. Most of the time, a starling appears to have a dingy black “coat”, while the meadowlark is striped in browns accented by a brilliant yellow throat and upper breast. Both have stubby bodies and are quite ungraceful in flight, moving from one spot to another with a rapid whirr of wings, ending in an abrupt landing.

This mild winter has encouraged several other summer residents to show up in this winter season.

Perusing them is about going where

Kootenay winters are typically such that meadowlarks and many other birds that depend heavily on an insect menu would find it impossible to survive. However, periodically, there have been mild enough winters to make food and water more readily available to normally migrating birds. So, some birds will stick around for the winter or part of it. For a meadowlark or two, milder conditions combined with cattle feedlots and loafing areas provide food, water and shelter, and that is about all they need to survive, even in winter.

Freezing or about freezing temperatures don’t seem to adversely affect a few wintering meadowlarks, varied thrushes, towhees and other hardy birds, as long as their needs are supplied. As of Jan. 21, the notable little rufous hummingbird was still alive and well, hanging around in a human-created “microclimate”.

To some people, Canada geese calling from overhead in winter give hope of spring.

Film tells story of teen attacked by Taliban CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY We know her as the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who survived a targeted shooting by the Taliban in her hometown in Pakistan. The Creston Valley Public Library premiere of the award-winning film, He Named Me Malala, on Feb. 2 will give you the rest of the story.

He Named Me Malala tells the remarkable true story of teenager Malala Yousafzai, who was attacked

by Taliban gunmen for advocating girls’ education. Rather than be silenced, Malala emerged as a global voice for the education rights of all children, and in 2014 she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize recipient.

Malala was born in 1997 in Mingora, a town in the Swat district of northwest Pakistan. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai named her after Malalai, a Pashtun heroine.

Ziauddin, who has always loved learning, ran a school in Swat adjacent to the family’s home. He was known as an advocate for education in Pakistan, which has the second highest number of unschooled children in the world, and became an outspoken opponent of Taliban efforts to restrict education and stop girls from going to school.

Malala shared her father’s passion for learning and loved going to school. In 2009, as the Taliban’s military hold on Swat intensified, Malala began writing a blog for the BBC Urdu service under a pseudonym, with fears that her school would be attacked under the increasing military activity in Swat.

Malala Yousafzai was attacked by the Taliban for advocating girls’ education.

Television and music were banned, women were prevented from going shopping and then Ziauddin was told that his school had to close.

Malala and her father received death threats but continued to speak out for the right to education.

Around this time, Malala was featured in a documentary made for the New York Times and was revealed as the author of the BBC blog.

In 2011, she received Pakistan’s first National Youth Peace Prize and was nominated by Archbishop

Desmond Tutu for the International Children’s Peace Prize. In response to her rising popularity and national recognition, Taliban leaders voted to kill her.

On Oct. 9, 2012, as Malala and her friends were travelling home from school, a masked gunman entered their school

bus and asked for Malala by name. She was shot with a single bullet, which went through her head, neck and shoulder.

Two of her friends were also injured in the attack.

Malala survived the initial attack, but was in a critical condition. She was moved to Birmingham in the United

Kingdom for treatment at a hospital that specializes in military injuries.

The Taliban’s attempt to kill Malala received worldwide condemnation and led to protests across Pakistan. In the weeks after the attack, over two million people signed a right to education petition, and the National Assembly swiftly ratified Pakistan’s first right to free and compulsory education bill.

Malala became a global advocate for the millions of girls being denied a formal education because of social, economic, legal and political factors. In 2013, Malala and Ziauddin co-founded the Malala Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls’ education and to empower girls to raise their voices, to unlock their potential and to demand change.

Malala accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2014 with Indian children’s rights and education advocate Kailash Satyarthi. Malala contributed her $1.1 million prize money to financing the creation of a secondary school for girls in Pakistan.

Community seed bank preserving diversity DAN MCMURRAY COMMUNITY SEED BANK

Seed saving for the Dan McMurray Community Seed Bank in the Creston Valley will be even easier and more fun this coming growing season. Last year, volunteer growers said they learned a lot and enjoyed the process of growing seed plants and saving seeds.

In 2016, there will be a group leader for each type of vegetable.

Each leader will recruit growers, distribute seeds or plants of the grower’s choice, and show them how to prevent cross-pollination

and save seeds. Growers will donate seeds back to the seed bank, but keep most of the produce they grow.

Why is a seed bank needed?

Seed banks help preserve varieties of plants that grow well in our climate and soils. With a wide variety of seeds available, we will have seeds that over time will adapt to climate change. As well, seed banks maintain diversity in food plants, whereas the variety in commercial seeds decreases every year. In the event of a major disaster, we would always have seeds available even when supply lines for goods are cut off. Plus,

ecologically grown local seeds are just better!

The seed bank in Creston started in 2012, after the deaths of well-known tomato growers Dan and Val McMurray. In 2004, shortly after moving to the valley, Dan and Val started growing vegetables on their Wynndel flats property and collecting seeds. They traded seeds with growers around the world, and over the years developed a unique collection of openpollinated seeds (offspring of these seeds are just like the parent plant, unlike those from hybrid seeds).

In 2012, the entire seed collection was donated to the College of the Rockies and the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition (CVFAC) in trust for the community. When the seeds were transported to the college, the collection included 1,600 varieties of tomatoes and many varieties of peas,

beans, squash, melons, corn and peppers. Quite a few of these were rare heirlooms. It took a pickup truck fully loaded to move them all!

Volunteers and college staff were organized to sort

and catalog the seeds. It took two full days because each variety had to be recorded on paper and then put into spreadsheets. Since then, volunteers have been growing out as many varieties as possible and donating seeds to other seed banks. But each year the seeds get older. Now the best varieties will be selected to grow out to replenish the stock before the seeds die. And the bank intends to expand to include other types of vegetables.

Over the next few months, the seed bank will be gearing up for a big growing season, and is looking for volunteer growers or people who just want to help. The Prince Charles Secondary School Bulldogs are unbeaten against Kootenay opponents three tournaments into the 2015-16 senior boys’ basketball season.

PCSS won two of the tournaments and placed third in the other while going 8-0 overall versus regional rivals, the only blemish on an otherwise perfect campaign coming at the hands of a provincially ranked team from the Okanagan.

The Creston school collected its latest trophy in Kimberley on Jan. 16, topping a six-team field hosted by Selkirk secondary.

The Bulldogs crushed one of the East Kootenay’s better teams in the final game 107-70, putting up 30 points in each of the second and third quarters against the Fernie Falcons.

Jake Dumas powered the attack with 48 points on the strength of 10 three-point field goals. Leo Evans added 26 points and Jamond Dortman 21 for the Bulldogs, who pulled away after a relatively close first quarter — in which they outscored Fernie 20-16 — to hold advantages of 50-36 at halftime and 80-57 after three quarters.

PCSS opened the modified round-robin with an 84-56 clubbing of the Mount Sentinel Wildcats from South Slocan, putting it into the winners’ bracket with the other two first-round victors, Fernie and the Mount Baker Wild of Cranbrook.

Evans netted 28 points and Dumas 23, with Jordin Czar chipping in 13.

The Creston squad’s other victory came against the Wild, which trailed throughout the contest (by double digits on more than one occasion) but always clawed back to keep it close, finally succumbing 81-75.

PCSS held quarter leads of 31-21, 43-38 and 66-55 and seemed to have the outcome in hand late in the fourth quarter when Mount Baker used a 9-0 spurt to narrow a 78-66 deficit to 78-75 and put a scare into the Bulldogs, who iced the game with three free throws in the final seconds.

Evans (with 30 points), Dumas (19) and Marcus Bell (eight) paced PCSS. It was the second title of the season for PCSS, which opened its schedule in December by going undefeated in three games to win a tournament at Mount Sentinel. Victories over Nakusp, Mount Baker and Selkirk sent the team into the Christmas break with a perfect record.

The Bulldogs’ only defeat came in a tournament at L.V. Rogers secondary in Nelson on Jan. 8 and 9 against an Osoyoos Rattlers’ squad ranked No. 6 in the provincial single-A poll.

They won their other two games, however, to clinch third place out of nine entrants, including a thrilling 73-69, come-from-behind victory in the bronze-medal match against the host Bombers, a triple-A team which led 40-32 at the half and by as many as 18 points in the third quarter.

There was no quit in the Bulldogs as they launched an 11-0 run after falling behind 53-35 to swing the momentum and ultimately turn an apparent blowout into an improbable triumph.

Still trailing 67-63, the Bulldogs netted 10 straight points to stun the home team.

Dumas hit for 29 points and Dortman for 22 to lead the scoring for PCSS, which also defeated Mount Baker — another triple-A school — en route to the third-place game.

The Bulldogs put up a stiff fight against the Rattlers before falling 86-74 in a game that was tied 44-44 at halftime. Dumas led the way with 27 points.

PCSS is scheduled to play at Mount Baker on Jan. 29 and 30 before hosting its own tournament in Creston on Feb. 5 and 6.

A tournament in Fernie on Feb. 12 and 13 precedes the East Kootenay double-A zone championships Feb. 26 and 27, from which one team will advance to the provincials in Langley.

Marion Clarica Sutcliffe (Staples) August 17, 1923 ~ January 12, 2016 Marion Clarica Sutcliffe (Staples) passed away peacefully in Creston, BC on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in her 92nd year.

Marion was born to parents Georgina and Frank Staples in Creston, BC on August 17, 1923, the middle child of three siblings.

Marion graduated from Creston Valley High School in 1941 where she was an avid basketball and badminton player.

After graduation, Marion, following in her father’s footsteps, moved to Vancouver, attending business school to become a bookkeeper and entrepreneur.

Upon returning to Creston in the late 1940’s, Art began romancing Marion and they were married in January 1948. As life-long residents of Creston, Marion and Art were prominent and involved members of the community.

Marion was a Lionette, Rotary Ann, a member of the Creston Golf executive and infamous Nut Club chef. As an avid bridge player, Marion took every opportunity to sit down for a game and played well into her late 80’s.

Marion, known for her outrageous sense of humour and quick wit, was the life of the party. She and Art were the consummate hosts, well known for their generosity and kindness. Marion took pride in setting a perfect table and loved to entertain. Marion’s curling and golf antics, both on and off the ice and fairways were well documented and her Tuesday Ladies’ Day at the golf course held special meaning.

For years, Marion ran ceramics classes in her home and MARION DID IT graced the bottoms of many ceramic pieces. For over 30 years, Marion was the celebrated ‘asparagus’ favourite

and no trip to the retail stand would be complete without chatting to her.

In her teens, Marion’s dad purchased a piece of property on Kootenay Lake that was to become one of her favourite spots and she was privileged to ‘summer’ at the lake until she was 90.

She was fortunate to travel the world in her early years and thoroughly enjoyed trips to Palm Springs and Reno in her later years.

It is, however, Marion’s high-spirited, generous nature, and her strength and independence that will continue to live on.

In 2011, she was pre-deceased by her sister Helen, and in 2000 by her husband Art. She is survived by her younger brother Dick (Vera) Staples; daughter Leeann (Russell) Miller; granddaughters Erin and Dawn; son Doug (Dianne) and three grandsons, Kenton, Connor and Brett. Marion is also survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends, young and old.

A Service and Celebration of Life will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 315 15 Avenue North, Creston, BC at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 13, 2016.

Sincere thanks to the staff at Swan Valley Lodge for their dedicated and kind care of Marion.

T-Cats keep one-point lead over Ghostriders

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats held on to second place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, still just one point ahead of the Fernie Ghostriders.

Both teams had a win and a loss on the weekend, giving them two more points, but no new place in the standings.

The Thunder Cats started the weekend with a 7-2 loss while visiting the Castlegar Rebels. A first-period goal by Alec Wilkinson gave the Thunder Cats a 1-0 lead that lasted just over a minute into the second period.

“We definitely let the game get away from us in the second,” said head coach Jeff Dubois. “In hindsight, we probably got a little too pleased with ourselves too quickly. … We took our foot off the gas pedal and they made us pay for that.”

Castlegar scored four goals in the second period before Grant Iles responded with 34 seconds remaining. Castlegar added a fifth goal five seconds later, and two more at 16:48 and 4:45 in the third period.

On Saturday, the Thunder Cats visited the Golden Rockets, at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division with 11 points, coming away with a 5-0 shutout.

Nicholas Kovacik scored the game’s first goal in the first period, with Thomas Cankovic and Logan Styler scoring in the second. Late in the third period, Sebastian Kilcommons and Carson Cartwright scored for Creston.

Although a few key players were missing, including Ian Desrorsiers and goalie Brock Lefebvre, Styler returned after a few weeks away, and Dubois was impressed by the effort of
