Interest in colouring for grown-ups surges Red Deer Public Library hosts monthly colouring program

ho said we had to give up the fun of colouring by the time we reached a certain age?

More and more grown-ups are snapping up colouring books these days - actually, it’s more like an exploding trend - and settling into something of a renaissance in terms of exploring a new artistic expression.

‘Colouring Time for Adults’ runs the first Thursday of each month in the Snell Gallery of the Red Deer Public Library (downtown Branch). Sessions runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. But beyond that, folks are invited to drop by the branch up on level four anytime to colour.

Five of the top 20 selling books on Amazon are adult colouring books, said Kim Whiting, who facilitates the program.

“It’s almost not enough time - some people end up taking their work home with them,” she explains, referring to the 90-minute sessions.

Pencil crayons are provided, along with black markers and the colouring sheets from a particular book as well. “We try to have a theme for every colouring session,” she said.

“We tend to look at the popularity of books to see what we think our members might be interested in,” she said, of the program, which was launched last September. Right off the bat, about 18 people initially showed up.

“We were impressed with the good turnout - and then on the next date, we had 40.

“Now we have people bringing their own colouring books and their own pencil crayons,” she said. “There have been people coming to the group from the very beginning, and they are getting more into it.

There’s something companionable about it - there’s some chatting but not much; they’re pretty quiet,” she added, smiling.

“It’s kind of peaceful to be with a group of people.”

According to www.flavourwire.com, “Johanna Basford, from Aberdeen, Scotland, is the biggest superstar of the genre. Her previous books The Enchanted Forest and The Secret Garden have sold millions of copies worldwide.

“Colouring seems to me to be the sedentary equivalent of taking a walk, a chance to preoccupy yourself on a basic level while your mind runs free, within parameters.”

Time and again, folks tell Whiting how relaxing they find the activity.

“You have to focus on the design, which I think is part of the reason it works for de-stressing,” she added. “You can’t really

It’s kind of a meditative form.

“People also tell me they can feel all their stress just wash away - so many people do it for that reason. Others also do it because they want to be creative - but they also want a starting point,” she said. “They don’t feel perhaps like they can begin with drawing a design. But if the design is there, they’re good with colouring it.

“Other people like to do an activity while they are doing something else.

That surprised me, but there are a few who will colour while they are watching a television program. They are so used to multi-tasking so they will do this to kind of quieten that part of their minds while they are doing something else.”

Liz Craig said colouring is very relaxing.

“A friend of mine had been talking about it. Then I noticed they were having it

here, so I figured it would be worthwhile to check out,” she said, adding that colouring is also about focusing, which in turn helps with things like stress and depression.

Shirley Piro described herself as a “wannabe” artist. “Something like adult colouring feeds the creative soul in me - I really enjoy it. There’s no right or wrong either; I can use any colours I want. And if I colour outside of the line, I just make it part of the picture,” she added with a laugh. She said at the monthly sessions, sometimes everyone will colour the same picture and other times they are given different images to colour. With the extremely intricate designs, it’s also a rather time-consuming activity in the very best way.

Mavis St. Louis agreed that it’s a relaxing pastime. “My daughter introduced me to it,” she said. “With this, I can also express my creativity. I love playing with colour,” she said. “It’s fun. I also read a lot

too, so this gives me a break.”

Janet Kruijer explained that she joined up because she saw St. Louis colouring in the library one day, so she thought she would give it a try as well. “She said how much fun it was,” she said, adding the social component of it is also a plus.

She is recommending it to friends.

St. Louis is as well. “They don’t know what they’re missing,” she added, chuckling.

Ultimately, it’s a welcome trend in an overly busy, often consistently stressed population.

“It kind of gives you permission to take some time,” said Whiting. “Because you are still ‘doing something’, you feel like, ‘I have permission to do this.’”

No registration for the Thursday night program is required.

Local woman shares experience of job scam posting

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS One local resident and the Red Deer RCMP are urging the public to be cautious of job offer scams.

With a recent surge in layoffs and the local economy struggling, job scams continue to grow more prevalent.

Donna Johansson has been on the job hunt for a number of months. With a background as a receptionist, Johansson said she has never had any trouble finding employment in the past. After handing out more than 250 resumes and being interviewed more than 20 times, Johansson has also fallen victim to two job scams. Although the jobs looked legit, after further investigation, Johansson discovered they were scams before it was too late.

“One was on Kijiji and one was on Indeed.com,” she said. “The first one I got was from the Moton Group. The wording on the actual email was off. It didn’t sound very

professional and it was broken English.”

Johansson was then sent a description of the supposed ‘receptionist’ job which included duties like production processing and shipping and maintaining statistics, among others. “They also indicated the probation period was for only seven business days. It looked bogus to me.”

Looking into it further, Johansson looked up the addresses that were on top of the offer letter.

“It said they had an office in Australia and one in Saskatoon. I Googled the Australia one first and it was a residential house. I looked up the address in Saskatoon and it was actually the atrium at the University of Saskatoon.

I phoned security there and double checked and they had never heard of the Moton Group,” she said. “I called the RCMP and they said to get a hold of the Anti-Fraud Centre.”

Just last week, Johansson got an email from a company called CommunityLend Finance. After receiving an offer letter, the first thing Johansson was asked for was personal

documents. “The letter said to verify your identity, send us a scan of your ID, passport or DL (driver’s license),” she said, adding they gave an option to scan personal documents over a web cam.

Meanwhile, Johansson said she cautions other job seekers to be aware of these types of scams. “It’s the old rule - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” she said. “Once I started looking online you can tell - they use certain wording and there will be four or five of the same jobs posted.”

Red Deer RCMP Cpl. Karyn Kay said job scams aren’t necessarily increasing, but in the world of the Internet, they are surfacing more frequently. “We are seeing more than we ever did before. With the use of social media and the Internet, it’s easier for bad guys to target vulnerable victims,” she said. “And right now people are vulnerable because they aren’t working. Criminals aren’t targeting those people.”

Kay said people should be aware when applying to jobs online. “One thing is to never give into pressure and be very thorough when you read any documentations. Before you sign anything, make sure you understand it and ask questions,” she said. “It’s also important to verify the interviewer and the company - do your Better Business Bureau searches. As well, interviews should be in appropriate places - one victim met their interviewer in a car.

Where the interview is should be a flag for you whether or not it is legitimate.

“Never, ever use your bank account. If they are a legitimate company they have their own bank accounts, they don’t need your bank account to put money in or out.

Also, don’t give any information unless you are signing a contract - they will never ask you for a passport.”

In addition, Kay said if someone thinks they have been scammed it is important to first notify the RCMP and also alert the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre web site also contains information on how victims can avoid getting unintentionally involved in criminal money laundering; the web site includes reports of criminals targeting job seekers in order to recruit them as money laundering mules.

United Way raises more than $2 million for local agencies

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS United Way of Central Alberta hosted their annual Touchdown Breakfast last week to celebrate their 50th year in the community and recognize all of the help from their partners.

In 2015, United Way and its contributors managed to raise a total of $2,264,934 for Central Alberta. Local businesses of Central Alberta were recognized for their high achieving workplace campaigns, and influential community ambassadors were thanked during the event. “It took a fair bit more work on our part to get to this point, but really it’s the workplace campaigns that got us here,� said CEO Robert Mitchell. “These campaigns are the backbone of our annual campaigns. We have about 80 per cent of our money coming from those campaigns, so they have done a lot of work.

Some of those workplace campaigns have had to reduce employees, and the employees left behind really stepped up.�

The businesses who were addressed at the breakfast included the top three workplace contributors, NOVA Chemicals, DOW/ ME Global and Alberta Health Services. “We know that DOW/ME Global, NOVA and even Alberta Health Services had losses of employees but really rallied around and raised more money than ever before to make up their shortfall. We’re absolutely thrilled about it, we really are,� Mitchell said.

Other noted businesses included Scotiabank and the Canada Revenue Agency in the category of Community Builder Awards for Sustained Growth and Farm Credit Canada and GE Oil and Gas for the Community Builder Awards in Significant Growth. Stantec received this year’s Welcome Aboard Award.

Mitchell gave his thanks to all the volunteers and donors who had contributed to making the 50th Anniversary Campaign a large success. “It’s been a bit of a tough year but this achievement really is quite amazing, considering the economy. Obviously we were very nervous about that in trying to raise this much money,� Mitchell said. “The total is more than we raised in 2013, and we’re going to be able to continue supporting the agencies we currently support. We have committed to three year funding, and we will continue that.�

He acknowledged that 2016 may present some challenges in fundraising due to the poor economic status, however he was confident and hopeful that Central Alberta would come through. “We have a very community minded population here in Central Alberta who seems to be very focused on helping.

We hope that they realize as the economy dips, the needs often go up. Hopefully we can ask people to step up again this coming year and help the community. As we’ve seen today, I think they will,� he said. “I would say we wanted our 50th year to blow us out of the water but the economy didn’t help us there. However, I think this achievement is really quite significant when you consider the economic impact that we’ve had. It’s been 50 years, and we’ve managed to grow a lot in the last ten years. OPINION Celebrating Family Literacy Day in Canada It’s time to pull out the books, games and an array of tools to spark a stronger interest enhancing literacy - today marks Family Literacy Day in Canada.

Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on Jan. 27th to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

According to the organization, taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development. “Even just 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.”

Some of our best memories we have as children are being read to whether it by a parent, sibling or babysitter. It’s such a simple thing, but it can lay a solid foundation for strong literacy skills down the road.

This year’s theme is ‘Play for Literacy’ emphasizing the valuable effects of play

on literacy skills and in providing new literacy opportunities.

According to ABC Life Literacy Canada, literacy and numeracy in Canada is declining and only action will reverse this trend. Over the last 10 years, Canadian literacy rates have dropped - in 2003 we ranked above average compared to other countries, we are now just average.

Percentages of Canadians with below desired literacy and numeracy rates are staggering - 49% for literacy and 55% for numeracy; this means almost six in 10 Canadians do not have the desired level of numeracy skills.

The research is clear - children raised in homes that promote family literacy grow up to be better readers and do better in school than children raised in homes where literacy is not promoted, according to officials. We know that promoting family literacy is important to future reading and school success, but does that mean parents should be prepared to read 100

books a week to their preschoolers? Of course not. While family literacy activities are often based in reading, there are lots of other ways families can conduct literacy activities at home through picture books, songs, poetry and storytelling.

According to www.getreadytoread.org, it’s essential to make books a key member of your family.

“Assigning a place for your child’s books shows your child that books are special and deserve an organized storage place all their own,” reads the web site.

The site also says that one of the earliest literacy skills children develop is the concept of sequencing, or telling a story from start to finish in order.

“One way to practice this skill at home is to create your own picture books, or books without words. Using photos, pictures from magazines or your child’s drawings, books can be created and placed in the home library for easy access,” reads the site.

“Family members can ‘read’ the story with the child by asking him or her to take them through the story. As the child gets older, family members should have the child dictate the story to them so they can write it down and then move on to encouraging the child to write the words themselves.”

Conventional books may not be quite as popular as they used to be, but that doesn’t mean there are a lack of resources available - if anything there is more. You can read virtually anywhere whether it be on your smartphone, tablet or computer and children need to learn to be comfortable with all this technology anyways.

Of course a great way to keep the whole family engaged is to make a trip to the Red Deer Public Library. Besides the huge collection of books, there are many activities planned everyday to stimulate a child’s imagination and to bring families together in an atmosphere that encourages literacy.

This is not an ideological problem since these personalities are all over the political map. Nor is it simply a matter of self-promotion, malicious

Trudeau’s elevation to such company started with his appropriation of Laurier’s version of an Aesop fable, “Sunny ways, my friends, sunny ways.

This is what positive politics can do.” Along with sunny ways we have his prayerful hands, his hand on his heart, his forehead touching that of his wife, eyes closed in blissful transport. And we have

infinite selfies.

There is a lot that is phony about Justin – his supercilious, “It’s 2015!” was carefully scripted, not a spontaneous cliché – but that doesn’t mean he is lying. Machiavelli reminds us that in order for a new prince to lie he has to know the truth. But as the Ottawa Citizen’s David Warren pointed out, with Trudeau truth never arises. Trudeau is our first postmodern prime minister who neither knows the difference between truth and lies nor cares.

For such persons, ‘lies’ are just things you don’t like to hear.

Lacking prudence, lacking political experience, indeed, lacking experience of anything substantive – for snowboarding and drama coaching don’t

cut it – Trudeau relies on show and imagination, not achievement. One wonders what Andy Leslie, Marc Garneau, or Bill Morneau, men who have actually distinguished themselves, think of their boss.

A few policies have been announced. Here Trudeau illustrates another Conservative criticism.

As Stephen Harper said, “The culture of the Liberal Party has not changed and will not change.”

Evidence was there before the election when Dan Gagnier, at the time Liberal campaign co-chair, was giving lobbying advice to TransCanada Corporation.

Since the Liberals had not yet been elected, he was fired.

Before the government was sworn in, the Quebec government was

asking Ottawa to match the $1.3 billion ‘investment’ they were throwing at Bombardier’s hapless C-series of commercial aircraft. They are still under development but nobody wants them.

Immediately after the Liberal victory, the stock in SNC-Lavalin and WSP Global rose handsomely.

So-called infrastructure spending means lots of money to Montreal construction companies. What are the odds that the first big project is to rebuild the Champlain Bridge?

Or there is the proposed trade deal with China.

Bombardier has a plant there. Power Corporation and the Demarais family have long standing interests in the country. Who cares about cyber security?

In contrast, does any

Albertan think that Laurentian Canada gives a hoot about $40 oil? Or $20 oil? Or oil at all? The only thing the Liberals have done about oil is ban tankers from the west coast. Oil was useful once to help pay for subsidized Quebec day care. But who needs oil now that deficits are available?

Lacking experience, lacking prudence, but painfully aware of the vacuum that post-modern politics entails, Trudeau has had to rely on his small-minded Quebec prejudices. He meant it when he said that, “Canada belongs to us.” We know who ‘us’ are.

Now Canada belongs to them.

History of oil and gas in Red Deer The crisis in the energy industry is having an impact on our community. For a very long time, oil and gas have been one of the most important components in the economy.

The history of oil and gas in the Red Deer area goes back more than 130 years. In 1885, the Winnipeg and Northwest Petroleum Company (Noxo) dispatched drilling equipment to a site along the Red Deer River where oil seepages had been reported.

Noxo predicted it would be able to strike oil at a mere 100m (300 ft). However, the venture proved a failure. In fact, J.B. Tyrell, the famous scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada, reported that he could find no evidence of the purported petroleum seepage.

Nevertheless, the entrepreneurs chartered the Alberta and Athabasca Railway Company, which received permission to construct a railroad from the C.P.R. line east of Calgary to Edmonton and then on to Athabasca. Moreover, the Company was given authorization to construct telegraph and telephone lines from southern to northern Alberta and to run steamboat lines on the Red Deer, North Saskatchewan and Athabasca Rivers.

For many years, nothing much happened with respect to oil and gas exploration. In 1909, the Red Deer Board of Trade hired Eugene Coste to provide

DAWE advice on drilling for natural gas. After he told them that such a venture would cost $100,000, with no guarantee of success, the idea was quickly dropped.

In the spring of 1914, a major oil and gas discovery was made at Turner Valley.

The Pioneer Oil Company and Red Deer Investment Company drilled wells on the south side of Red Deer, but both holes ended up dry.

The discovery of an oil and gas field at Leduc in 1947 revived interest in local exploration. Major fields were discovered in the StettlerBig Valley area in 1949-1950 and around Sylvan and Gull Lakes by 1952.

In the summer of 1953, a very successful well was drilled in the Joffre district, northeast of Red Deer.

Within two years, there were 285 wells completed over an extended area.

The City of Red Deer quickly felt the benefits of the dynamic new industry.

At the end of August, 1953, Gulf Oil opened a large central administrative office on the second floor of the new Truant Block on Gaetz Avenue. Shortly thereafter, Imperial Oil also announced the creation of a regional

Red Deer office.

In the spring of 1955, drilling began in the Balmoral district on the east side of the City. In 1957, Imperial Oil began drilling deeper wells and soon hit another huge pool of oil at 2100m.

The spike in local employment was not only limited to drilling rig crews.

All kinds of associated businesses, such as trucking and supply companies, sprang up as well. As more and more people flooded

into the City to take advantage of the new jobs, there was a major boom in the construction industry as well.

The huge increase in world oil prices in the 1970s resulted in a new round of drilling across Central Alberta and a renewed boom both for the energy service industry and the community as a whole.

The imposition of the National Energy Policy was a huge blow to the oil and gas

industry in the early 1980s.

Just as the industry seemed to stabilize by the middle of the decade, O.P.E.C. and particularly Saudi Arabia began to flood the market to maintain market share against the non-OPEC nations who had been ramping up production. The result was a sudden collapse of oil prices, down as low as $10 per barrel in March 1986.

The Gulf Wars in the 1990s cause some short

term spikes in the price of oil. However, prices generally remained fairly constant due to a plentiful world-wide supply. After the turn of the millennium, oil and gas finally began a prolonged climb upwards.

However, the near total collapse of the world financial markets in 2008 caused yet another sharp downward spike.

Finally, prices seemed to recover bringing prosperity to much of the industry.

‘MyCity’ launched for ease of citizen access

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS The City of Red Deer has introduced new ways of interacting and doing business online. The service, called ‘MyCity’, allows residents and business and property owners to pay bills, view accounts and access City of Red Deer information from anywhere.

“One of City council’s strategic principles is to build citizen friendly local government.

The launch of MyCity for Red Deerians is a key way we are making local government more accessible and user-friendly for our public,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “With features like renewing a business license and scheduling building inspections online, MyCity not only fulfills our commitment to being a citizen friendly government, but to being a business-friendly City as well.

“The City exists to serve our citizens and we know that time is our public’s most sought after resource. MyCity acknowledges that our citizens don’t always have the time during a regular schedule work day to come to City Hall to work with us. Launching MyCity allows the public to work with the City from wherever they are, whatever they are doing and at anytime of the day.”

MyCity is a new online service where residents and business and property owners can access information about their City of Red Deer accounts including utilities, business licenses, dog licenses and tax information. Residents can also view permits and applications and schedule inspections online 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

“We encourage all residents to visit MyCity and create a profile,” said Michael Williston,

enterprise business applications project manager. “And if you create a profile before March 6th, you will be entered to win a $100 credit on your next City of Red Deer Utility bill. If you choose electronic billing for your utility bill, you will be entered into a second draw for a tablet.”

Residents can visit MyCity on the City’s web site and start by creating a profile. The information collected on the registration form is safe and secure, and will help officials link residents with their information.

Once the form is submitted, residents are sent a confirmation email to confirm your email address. Then they will be ready to use MyCity. City accounts can be added to a profile using account numbers and access codes found at the top of licenses, tax notices, permits, downtown parkade bills or utility bills. A step by step guide and more information can be found at www. reddeer.ca/mycity.

Meanwhile, Veer said she encourages Red Deerians to sign up.

“Above all our citizens have many interactions with the City - we recognize that people’s time is at a premium and it’s imperative that they have a global view of what their interactions with the City are. From a user perspective, it’s in their interest in terms of time and consolidation perspective,” she said. “From the broader community perspective, there’s economic objectives that are fulfilled - the more citizens that sign up and use online resources, the more financially efficient we can be in City operations - it helps reduce mailing and paper costs. It also reduces consumption from an environmental perspective.”

directory Myths about play that may be affecting your children

BY JAMES DRUMAN The playtime your kids get, whether it be with you, their friends, or alone, is one of the most important components of their life, for many reasons, which we’ll touch on.

But many parents have some misconceptions about imagination-based play and

how it should be controlled or limited. This can have a severe effect on your child’s development, so let’s have a look at a few of the misunderstandings that some parents have.

The first is this idea that play doesn’t really accomplish anything. Indeed, in a modern world such as ours, where we tend to want

solid, tangible results for every endeavor we take on, it can be hard to see how a child’s fooling around does anything constructive for them.

For that reason, some parents take on an attitude of simply making room for play but not making it a priority.

In other words, they allow it and possibly see it as a way to keep the children out of their hair when there are ‘more important’ things to do, but that is about the extent as far as it goes.

The truth is that playtime plays a huge role in cognitive, social, physical and emotional development. What seems like a child messing around and wasting time is a crucial part of their life process at this stage.

Another tendency many parents have is to control the outcome of their child’s playing around. This happens a lot when the game is emphasized on creating something and the parent wants to make sure they get the right lesson out of

the process.

While the intentions behind this misconception are fair enough, usually it is ends up being a hindrance to a child’s creativity.

Creativity is quite possibly the most underrated intelligence known to man, and that’s what your child should be working on the most.

If you are always pushing them and guiding them, not allowing them to fail and to solve problems, the most rewarding part of the exercise is lost.

Playtime can do with a little bit of structure from time to time, but for the most part, it should be allowed to flow. Give them a chance to take over, make their own decisions and do what they want. Of course, this is all within reason, but the whole point is to let them learn to think on their own.

As hinted above, some parents look at play as a way to ‘keep the kids busy’ or distract them while you handle responsibilities. This is one of the main reasons

parents these days have given video games and television sets so much reign over the lives of modern children.

It’s understandable why— we’re busier than ever and we just don’t have the time, so we plop them in front of a screen and we’ve got hours, or even days, to do what we need to do. And then it becomes habit—for us and for them.

It’s important to realize just how crucial the process of playing, imagining and running around like a goofball is for your children, and make it a point to produce an environment where they are allowed to run free. It truly is an essential component to getting a healthy start in these beginning stages of their precious lives.

City continues to become more inclusive of various cultures

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Through January the Red Deer Express is publishing a series involving several community groups and how the inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women affects them moving forward.

Interviews with local Elders, community supports and City staff will be included to also help examine what the inquiry means for Red Deer as a whole.

The relationship between the City of Red Deer and the Aboriginal and Indigenous people in the community is constantly changing and has grown more positive in recent years, officials have said.

Walking With Our Sisters, the development of the Asooahum Centre and new partnerships in community organizations are all signs of the changing attitudes in the community.

City Councillor Lynne Mulder said she has seen many rifts in the community between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, but that she is encouraged to see the many changes happening to repair those relationships.

“I would say particularly in the last four or five years,

we have made remarkable progress. There is now a lot more trust,” Mulder said.

“The new relationship came from an incident - which I think could be the Clearview Ridge incident - that marked for us a time to realize that we had a job to do in this community to rebuild the relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.”

Several years ago when the Asooahum Cultural Centre was still being planned, there was a severe backlash from members of the community over where the facility would be built.

Mulder described this time as one of the most awful experiences she had as a City councillor due to the ignorance and racist comments she had heard at community discussions for the planning and proposals.

“I’ve never seen our community stand up and say such awful things about Aboriginal people.”

She explained following this disturbing community out-lash a talking circle was held with nearly 60 community members. She said it was a very moving and cathartic experience for all involved and this talking circle ended up playing a

crucial part in the changing attitudes of City councillors and relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

“It was City folk and Aboriginal people there. And I will say, everyone was in tears. It was such a moving experience,” she said. “It was so important because that

She said through this experience, close relationships were formed between members of council, City staff, local Elders and members of the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre Society (RDNFS). She said they came together to continue the

planning for the Asooahum Centre and was delighted to see the facility break ground earlier in 2015.

“Those were really tough conversations we had, but we came out with earth being moved at the Asooahum Centre. That was pretty darn exciting,” she said.

Another significant change she noted was the creation and development of Urban Aboriginal Voices.

“I think from the City’s perspective right now, there has been a lot of progress.

I think Urban Aboriginal Voices - which has four people from the City on it - will go a long way,” Mulder said.

“The whole purpose of that is to come up with strategies and actions so we can do something concrete so our communities can work together. It helps Aboriginal groups and people approach the City and helps us to work better with them.”

Additionally, she said the recent Walking With Our Sisters (WWOS) installment was a great event for the City.

“Walking With Our Sisters was so well attended and people were so moved by that,” she recalled.

“It made me very proud to be a Red Deerian at that point. It made me very proud of our City and how we respected those who had been lost. They weren’t all Aboriginal women, but they are mostly Aboriginal women and WWOS is a very important way to remember them.”

Mulder is just one of several City councillors and staff who are working to better relationships between Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal people within the City. She said it is important to recognize all cultures - not just Indigenous or Aboriginal cultures - and that she is pleased with the steps the City has taken to become more inclusive of various cultures.

“The other thing we did as a City - and it was very supported by council - was to hire a diversity coordinator,” Mulder explained.

“Her name is Tymmarah Zehr and she is doing an awesome job for us. Her role isn’t just with Aboriginal people either, it’s for all cultures in the City. She works with the diversity inclusion committee and their role is to engage the whole community in chang-

Mulder also noted Red Deer is one of many in a provincial network that shares best practices for creating inclusive communities.

“I think that if we can change our relationship with Aboriginal people in a major way, and can become more appreciative of other’s cultures and of each other as people, that will make a difference,” Mulder said.

She added an important part of changing attitudes, along with gestures on behalf of the City, is changing the attitudes and educating young people about other cultures and cultural practices. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

ENTERTAINMENT Red Deer Players presents acclaimed play Mass Appeal

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS After last year’s tremendous theatrical interpretation of Twelve Angry Men, the Red Deer Players are gearing up for their highly-anticipated production of Mass Appeal at the Scott Block.

The show, which was written by Bill C. Davis, is being directed by Lori Lane, who also directed Twelve Angry Men. She’s also managed to sign up two of Red Deer’s finest actors in Paul Boultbee and Jason Steele to play the mature priest and young deacon.

Opening Feb. 5th, shows run through to Feb. 20th with curtain at 8 p.m. There are also matinee performances on Sundays, including one on Valentine’s Day at 2 p.m.

Mass Appeal deals with the relationship between Father Tim Farley, an experienced parish priest and a young seminarian by the name of Mark Dolson who insists on, “Upsetting Father Tim’s apple cart by challenging the status quo.

“The play carries some profound messages that are relevant to the church, but that can also apply equally to virtually any workplace or family; yet it does so with a healthy dose of humour,” reads a synopsis.

Mass Appeal has been performed for audiences around the world and was made into a movie starring Jack Lemmon back in the 1980s. For Lane, it’s been something of a dream project to be sure.

“I’ve got boxes and boxes of scripts. So when I’m doing some research and trying to figure out what would be a good show to do and what’s coming next and all of that, I go through the process of what have I heard of lately?”

So she started digging through her own collection and happened on Mass Appeal.

“I remembered mom saying this was a really good play - and I also thought this is a fantastic script.

“I was raised Catholic so as I’m reading it I’m also thinking, do I think this is really good and really funny because I can relate to this? That’s something you need to bear in mind in terms of widespread appeal. So I gave it to my husband - who is not Catholic - and I said I need you to read this to make sure it’s something that doesn’t have too narrow of a focus.”

found her project. “The thing that’s cool about it is that the two characters in it are such rich characters.

“You also come to realize when you read it that it really doesn’t matter if they’re priests or if they were, for example, a school teacher who is a year away from retirement and a student teacher who is coming right out of college.

“It’s really about any sort of ‘mentorship’ relationship - it has so much to say about the person who has ‘lived’ it and remembers back to the days when they were the young, enthusiastic one. But they’ve made their mistakes, they’ve seen what works and they get comfortable.

And there’s a certain sense of wisdom that comes with that.

“And then you’ve got the young person fresh out of school or who is still in school, who is going to change the world and is full of fresh ideas and knows everything that is wrong with the workplace or the establishment or the church.

“They come in with guns blazing expecting to change everything and quite can’t figure out why their technique isn’t

working.”

Lane said the play has a clever wit coursing through it but there’s real poignancy woven in as well. “I was thinking this show is a bit of a roller coaster in terms of the emotions that you live through.”

She also couldn’t be more pleased with her cast.

“Paul is so right for this role it’s unbelievable,” she said. “He brings huge depth to the part.

“For me, it all starts with knowing who these people are and doing that research you need to do. What’s it like to be a priest? What’s it like to go into the seminary?”

To that end, they visited a parish priest to talk about what goes on in the seminary as compared to the parish and what are the relationships like when a parish priest gets a deacon.

“That’s the way I work - let’s really dig into who these people are and find out what makes them tick so that when they are faced with these situations, we can figure out how Father Tim would respond.

That’s the way Paul works, and Jason, too.” Steele also brings much to his role, she said, adding that besides his experience in acting, he injects that perfect balance of maturity and idealism. “In a lot of respects you’ve got the ‘calm and the storm’,” she added with a laugh, referring to the nature of Boultbee’s and Steele’s characters respectively.

“A lot of the play has to do with their relationship and the mentorship, but to me, this play also speaks to Father Tim’s journey. As the older, more complacent, settled, not wanting to ‘rock the boat’ kind of person - that’s the easy way out in many respects. And he’s pretty happy with the status quo.

“When he gets assigned a seminarian who rocks the boat quite a bit and upsets the status quo, he resists to some extent.

But in doing so, there’s a lot of opportunity for some personal reflection and learning,” she explained. ”It’s so interesting because the lines between who is actually teaching become a bit blurred.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Merkules making a Red Deer stop on current tour

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS A young rapper by the name of Cole ‘Merkules’ Stevenson is making waves from across Canada to Europe with his newest album Scars.

The album dropped last year, followed by a cross-Canada tour and a promotional tour in Europe. He’ll be back in Red Deer on Jan. 29th to perform at Wild Bill’s.

While living in his hometown of Surrey, B.C, Stevenson was a victim of a serious attack that would later become the inspiration for his newest album.

The album was created to put rumours to rest that surrounded the origins of his scars.

“The title of the album is based on the time I got jumped when I was 16 years old while walking home from a party,” Merkules explained.

“For years a lot of people have wondered what the scars are from and I’d never really addressed it in the form of a song or a post online or anything. Nobody really knew what happened. There were a select few who’d heard rumours or who actually knew what was going on, but it was cool to be able to address that and put the rumours to rest.”

Merkules said the response to the album has been very positive and that it felt good to be able to address the rumours of his attack.

“The response to Scars has been really great. I’d been to Europe before, but every time I’d gone I was a supporting act for someone else. To go there alone and headline my own tour in different countries was awesome,” he said.

“All the shows were really good, and almost all of them sold out which was kind

of surprising. I thought there was going to be a struggle to pack the house, but I got there and it wasn’t an issue at all.”

He added that this album is quite a bit different from the others he has produced.

“With the albums that I’d done previously before Scars, I never really got a chance to sit down and craft the albums together the way that I wanted to because I was always on tour or busy,” Merkules explained.

“There would be times where I’d have all these songs ready to go, and I’d sort of just throw them together and call it an album before I went on the road.

“The difference between those albums and Scars is that this time I got to sit down, put together an album with a certain topic and give it a beginning, a middle and an end.”

At only 23, Merkules has had a fair amount of success with his work.

He has had multiple Canadian tours and has shared the stage with big name artists like Raekwon, Bone Thugs N’ Harmony, Tech N9ne and Hopsin among others. His stage presence is confident and lively, drawing in large crowds each time he plays in Red Deer.

This month, he will join Canadian hiphop artist Aspect for a show at Wild Bill’s Sports Bar. The two have collaborated many times and will be shooting a music video during the show for their song Mushroom Clouds.

“Aspect has made a lot of my beats and he’s an incredible rapper as well,” Merkules said.

“We did a song called Mushroom Clouds, and he informed me that we’re going to be shooting the video for it at the show, which is kind of cool. I’m excited about

that. I’ve heard ticket sales for that show have been going pretty good and I can’t wait. It’s gonna be fun for sure.”

Merkules is currently recording in an Edmontnon studio to put together his next album. The album does not have a release date as of yet, but Merkules said he’s excited to bring it out as soon as possible. As well, he is planning another cross-Canada tour in March and April.

“My new album is in the works. It’s not exactly close to being finished yet but it’s coming,” he promised.

“We’re working to get it out there as soon as possible,” he said. “The support that I’ve gotten for Scars has been amazing. I can’t wait for the show in Red Deer, I’m sure it’s going to be a really good night.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Australian singer Jeff Lang embarks on Canadian tour Singer Jeff Lang is gearing up to tour western Canada this winter, and to celebrate the tour he is going to be releasing an exclusive Canadian EP called Running By The Rock. He’ll be playing in Red Deer on Feb. 1st at Bo’s Bar and Grill.

Hailing from Australia, Lang is excited to be releasing the new project which features five original songs and the traditional Scottish folk tune, The House Carpenter.

Lang’s work ethic is clearly someone in love with his art. This has led him to carve out his own mould in the world of music, something which is uniquely his own, a sound which is true and original, restlessly inventive and always surprising in the outcome.

As with most of Lang’s collection, it was recorded live in the studio with

long time musical partners in crime Grant Cummerford (bass) and Danny McKenna (drums). The addition of Garrett Costigan on pedal steel feels so natural that one might mistake his presence on earlier albums. Alison Ferrier’s brief appearance singing backing vocals on the track she co-wrote with Lang breathes harmony and stillness into the album, which is ripe with the rhythms of work, life, and loving.

Of his new recording, Lang says, “(This is) a batch of brand new, reconditioned, rust-removed, freshly ventilated, instinct-driven musical conversations between sleep-deprived, cheaply-clothed, (mostly) freshly-shaven, (partially) clean-living, flinty-eyed gentlemen wielding precision instruments with all due care and respect.”

Winnipeg folk/roots duo Roger Roger are kicking off 2016 with the release of their debut CD Fairweather next week. The popular duo include Red Deer among their many western Canadian stops on Feb. 3rd at Fratters.

Roger Roger is truly a family affair.

Twin siblings Lucas and Madeleine Roger are both singer/songwriters who have joined forces, each playing guitar and harmonizing for each other’s songs. The offspring of producer/engineer/musician Lloyd Peterson (who co-produced Fairweather with Roger Roger), the twins each have a gift for songwriting that must have something to do with virtually growing up in a recording studio.

“Our dad is a recording studio owner, a music producer and a musician himself, so we spent a lot of time as children playing pool at the studio or just hanging out and listening to whatever band was recording,” recalls Madeleine.

“It was sort of tantalizing because there would be this ‘spaceship’ of buttons in front of us that we weren’t allowed to touch,” she added with a laugh.

“So we had a lot of years like that.” Peterson also had a studio at home, so needless to say, music was an essential part of the fabric of home life.

“We’ve always been around the recording process more than anything else and I think it became obvious to us during the recording of Fairweather how at home we felt in a recording studio. The whole process just felt so natural and comfortable.”

Lucas agreed. “It was just something we had witnessed for awhile, and now we were taking part in the recording process. It felt right to be there.”

They each bring their exceptional creativity to the project and embrace their differences, bringing a balance of folk, roots, and rock-inspired songs in a beautifully produced album that makes for a remarkable first recording.

“Listening to music has always been and still is huge in this house,” added Lucas about the twin’s exposure to all kinds of tunes growing up. “There are always piles of CDs and records everywhere and right now, there are four guitars on the couch.”

Madeleine added that a love for music extended beyond their immediate family as well.

“Our extended family has lots of singers as well, so there were always lots and lots of family campfires and visits where someone would be playing the piano and everyone would be singing.”

The Roger twins haven’t always played music together.

outfit Modern Man and rebuilding hot-rods, while Madeleine immersed herself in theatre, kayaking and travel. “I have this whole history of theatre and theatre performance. I studied acting in university and did a whole bunch of self-created plays and performed in community theatre, too. I also got involved in stage work and a bit of sound design for theatre.” She recalls eventually picking up a guitar after moving away from the theatre world a bit, and it was around that time she got right into songwriting.

“I loved it so much. I had spent my whole life thinking about the craft,” she said. “So it came a bit later, but I’ve never found anything I love more than songwriting.”

Lucas started playing in rock bands during his high school years. “I just thought that’s what you did, because everyone around me was,” he laughs. “I didn’t really start getting involved in the songwriting process and really wanting to play music more until I built my first acoustic guitar,” he said, adding it’s a career he’s still involved with.

“I started really changing how I looked at song-

writing and how I looked at performing.” When he and Madeleine started collaborating, it really started coming together.

They didn’t collaborate in their creative efforts until one night when Lucas overheard Madeleine playing her first batch of songs in their living room. He dug what he heard, grabbed his guitar and an armload of his own tunes, and Roger Roger was born.

It wasn’t long after they began working together that they decided to put together a CD. Paring down the numerous songs each had written to what would actually end up on the project proved a rather seamless endeavour as well. There was about 40 to 50 at the start to explore.

Roger Roger has performed twice at the Winnipeg Folk Festival as part of the Young Performers Program, showcased at the Folk Music Ontario Conference, entertained on board VIA Rail, hosted songwriters’ workshops, and are gearing up for the Canadian folk festival circuit, ready to melt hearts with their twinly harmonies and knock socks off with the craft of their songs.

Books on the Bus encourages literacy in Red Deer

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS The City of Red Deer has officially launched the Books on the Bus pilot program, thanks to the help of many community partners.

The program consists of mini-libraries on four City buses in order to promote reading and literacy. According to officials, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first of itsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; kind in Alberta.

The intent is to remove barriers of access to books, encourage reading in the community and to build social connections. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of communities have these small, free libraries around the community in walking paths and that sort of thing.

We have a lot of people who use transit, especially moms and fathers with their children. We thought it was a great opportunity to get those people reading books without having to go to the library,â&#x20AC;? said George Penny, transit manager with the City of Red Deer.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just seemed like a great way to sell the idea of reading. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always been passionate about reading myself and I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great opportunity.â&#x20AC;?

This project was made possible with the supporting partnerships of the Red Deer Public Library (RDPL), Red Deer and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), the Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance (CAPRA), Cosmos and Red Deer Transit.

The initiative is part of the Small Acts Matter campaign, which is a City of Red Deer campaign to remind people that small, meaningful acts and changes can support children, youth, families, seniors and communities in Central Alberta. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know that literacy is the foundation of our educational, economic and social programs. While there are many means of achieving literacy, instilling a love of books, a love of reading and a love of lifelong learning is the most effective and compelling route,â&#x20AC;? said Mayor Tara Veer.

Veer was excited to help present the new program to the public and to the participating partners after months of preparation. She said it is a way to help bring together families by encouraging them to make time during their commute to read together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reading is often, but not always, a solitary activity, books are now becoming community builders. Engaging our transit ridership to participate in a program that

is bigger than a few books on the shelf is just one way we are building community in the short and the long term,â&#x20AC;? she said.

The six-month trial period of the program rolled out on Jan. 21st, with four buses equipped with a small, mobile library. The libraries will be restocked daily by volunteers from Cosmos. Donations of books can be dropped off at Red Deer Public Library locations around the City. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pleased to launch a program today that increases access to books and encourages reading. Books on the Bus is a program that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take much to champion but has a lot of potential to create big impacts.

JONES a burning fire under the breastbone. It’s due to an over-indulgence in food and drink which pushes protein digestive enzymes and bile up into the lower end of the esophagus (food tube).

This condition is commonly referred to as gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD).

But there’s a problem.

PPIs have been available for many years and were originally marketed for intermittent use, to decrease the production of gastric acid. But people with moderate or severe GERD sometimes rely on them for long-term maintenance use. And there is an old saying that, “Too much of a good thing is often worse than none at all.”

One error is made over and over.

That’s when humans try to change nature’s normal physiology, resulting in unintended consequences.

Consider the similar and numerous troubles that occur when cholesterol-lowering drugs are used for prolonged periods to decrease blood cholesterol!

It’s therefore reasonable to expect that when PPIs become a habit, the chronic decrease in gastric acid triggers unintended consequences. For instance,

risk of developing a blood clot are often placed on anti-platelets medication which helps to keep platelets slippery and less likely to form a clot.

But recent studies show that PPIs interfere with the effectiveness of these drugs, increasing the risk of blood clot. In addition, PPIs may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by decreasing the production of nitric oxide that relaxes coronary arteries.

One study showed that 75% of PPI users were deficient in this vitamin. Other studies revealed there was a 4X greater risk of B12 deficiency in long-term users of PPIs. Annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel deemed a success

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It was a busy weekend of curling in Red Deer this week.

The 34th Red Deer Oilmen’s Bonspiel was held from Friday through Sunday last week at the Pidherney Centre. The annual event features teams and players from all aspects of the oil and gas industry.

“Everything turned out well. We finished up on Sunday with the finals in the afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. Great participation, we had lots of people there,” said Mike Burvill, one of the organizers of the event.

A total of 36 teams competed in this year’s bonspiel, down from the 56 that were in last year’s event, which Burvill said is likely due to the hard times the oil industry is experiencing right now. “(We hold the bonspiel) to support the Oilmen’s in Central Alberta and to represent Red Deer oilfield families and businesses,” he said.

Despite the smaller roster of teams, Burvill said the curling in the triple elimination tournament was still fun to watch.

“The Curling Centre’s excellent so, obviously, the curling was good. Pretty competitive,” he said.

Burvill, who is now in his 16th year as treasurer of the event, also participated as a curler with the Jewel Energy Services team.

“The ice was great. Wade from the Curling Centre did a phenomenal job looking after the ice surface and making sure draw times were on time.”

This year, the Bunch Projects team, skipped by Wayne Heikkinen, claimed the A final title. They were followed by the Hydrotesters in the B event, Electrogas Monitors in the C and Blue Star Energy Inc. in the D. “Wayne Heikkinen with Bunch Projects, they won the A event and they definitely had a pretty stellar team,” Burvill said.

“It was an excellent weekend for our team. We had a good time. It was an opportunity to play with my sons and a long-time friend and the event turned out pretty well,” Heikkinen said.

In addition to Heikkinen, the Bunch team also featured his sons, Chris and Matt, as well as Stan Hubl.

“The opportunity to curl with my sons in an event was awesome. It was more fun than I expected and it was an experience I would highly recommend,” said

This is not Wayne’s first trip to the winner’s circle at the event. By his own estimation, the Red Deer native has won four times in the past.

In fact, the tournament has a long history of repeat winners. The Hydrotesters team that won the B final, skipped by Rick Fobes, were last year’s overall champions and have won a total of four times in the past.

“As a planner when you get consistency with the teams that are entered it makes

planning much easier,” Burvill said, adding the repeat teams also provide a platform for the bonspiel to grow.

“It’s a great experience to get to know new people and see some old faces.”

This was the first year the event has been held over three days as opposed to four, a fact that Burvill said made planning the event a little easier.

“Overall it was a great experience to shorten it up and with everybody’s schedule it was nice to start up Friday

In addition to the curling, the Oilmen’s Bonspiel Association also hosted a banquet on Saturday night for the curlers to kick back and relax a little bit.

“The banquet was great. We had the Dean Ray Band there and everybody had a lot of fun dancing and the food was excellent,” Burvill said.

All in all, he said, it was a very successful weekend.

Members of the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce were treated to a different viewpoint on hockey last week.

Brian Burke, the Calgary Flames President of Hockey Operations, addressed a group of Chamber members during a special lunch at the Black Knight Inn as part of his Key Speaker Series.

“This is disputed territory. We view it as our territory, of course,” Burke said at the start of his 40 minute long talk, during which he addressed a number of hockey-related issues and topics including the CalgaryNEXT project, his own team’s fortunes this season, and the falling Canadian dollar.

“We had a tough start to the season,” Burke said of his Calgary Flames, who didn’t win a game in regulation until Nov. 7th this season.

Last year, the Flames were one of the most surprising teams in the NHL. While many believed they would finish in the bottom five in the standings, Calgary managed to fight their way into the post-season.

“Last year, obviously, we were probably the surprise of the National Hockey League. To make the playoffs and then to win a round. We beat the Vancouver Canucks in the first round and then we played Anaheim and Anaheim was a different story for us.

“They were too big and too fast and we were too young,” said Burke, who worked as the general manager of the Canucks, Ducks, and the Toronto Maple Leafs before joining the Flames in 2013. He won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2006-07.

According to Burke, the main issue with the Flames at the start of the year was their lack of team play, among other things.

“I felt our team play was poor, our special team play was poor and continues to struggle. I thought the goalies were okay, they weren’t stealing us games but I didn’t think they were the reason for us losing,” he said.

Since November, though, his team has managed to turn their fortunes around somewhat.

“I’m optimistic about our ability to have a good second half,” he said, pointing to the fact both of the team’s goaltenders

as well as their defense have started to perform well.

Perhaps more pressing for the Flames, and all Canadian teams, Burke said, is the Canadian economy. While the falling Canadian dollar hasn’t had a huge effect on this season, next season will be a very different story.

“It’s a major problem for all seven teams. There are two issues here. One is the economy in Alberta.

“I don’t have to tell anyone in Alberta where we are with the price of oil and the layoffs. But the second issue is the foreign exchange issue, which is crippling to the Canadian teams right across the country,” he said.

“If, this summer, our player payroll is $70 million U.S., and I won’t have the figures exactly right, but when the dollar was at 93 cents our payroll was around $80 million, $82 million (CAN). Now it’s well over $100 million and climbing.”

A strong supporter of gay rights, Burke also spent some time talking about the You Can Play initiative, a project that was founded by his son, Patrick Burke in 2012.

The You Can Play project is aimed toward, “Ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation,” according to the project’s mission statement. It was created in honour of Brian’s youngest son, Brendan, who came out in 2009 while he was playing goal for the University of Miami RedHawks. A few months later, Brendan died in a car accident.

Since then, Brian has been one of the movement’s most outspoken advocates and allies. Since 2012, the project has partnered with professional leagues in nearly every sport, including the NHL, NFL, CFL, MLS and WWE to name just a few.

“We don’t have a problem on the women’s side. Team athletes who are gay in women’s sports aren’t ostracized, it’s not a problem, they’re accepted. But the dropoff rate of young male team athletes that are gay is staggering.

“I think it’s had a profound effect. I don’t think it’s a homophobic dressing room nature now with our kids. I think our young players would happily accept a gay teammate, I really believe that. I think the first (professional) hockey player that comes out is going to find a very welcome reception.” zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

3. Saving money is a discipline which is not contingent upon your level of income. If only the very wealthy could afford to save then you would never hear of NBA players going bankrupt. I have seen clients making minimum wage with investment portfolios which greatly exceed those earning six figures a year. So all that being said, find yourself a professional financial planner and set a monthly automatic withdrawal. It’s way easier to save when it does not feel like a horrible and painful choice.

4. Call your credit card companies and get the best card you can. The annual fees on some cards can be quite high so you need to ensure you actually need the ‘perks’ the card gives you. If you carry a balance then you should make sure to ask for the lowest rate available. The difference between 19.99% and 12.99% adds up really quickly. While you have them on the phone and

are negotiating like a boss for the best card possible, opt out of paper statements. Most companies charge you $2/month and it’s a nice little step you can take for the environment.

5. Get realistic with your spending. There is a terrific app brought to you by the makers of Quick Tax called MINT.com. You enter your banking and credit card information into this very secure and very free site and every time you make a purchase this app tracks it and allocates it to the proper category such as food etc.

You can set a budget for every part of your life and receive notifications when you are nearing the limit you have set. It can be very eye-opening to come face to face with your spending reality.

6. It’s a great idea annually to make sure your will is up to date. Life changes quickly and the last thing you want to deal with during this time is an incorrect will.

7. Another item for annual review is your insurance. Do you have enough

or too much coverage? Are the beneficiaries reflected correctly? Are your homeowners and auto policies up to date and giving you the coverage you want?

One hour a year should be enough to give you piece of mind.

8. And finally, where could you save even more?

Is your bank offering a better all-inclusive plan to cut down on monthly fees? If not then maybe it’s time to look at your options. Twenty-five dollars a month per account really adds up. Is your cable cost efficient? Your cell phone provider remaining competitive? Are you opting for paperless statements to avoid unnecessary fees?

If you saved even $50 between all of the above that my friends adds up to $600 a year which you could put right against your mortgage in fact!

And there you have it, some pain free ways to keep your money. I mean it is your money after all.
