PLANS ARE moving ahead for the new Lake Country Food Bank to open up operations at its new location. Joy Haxton, of the Lake Country Food

Assistance Society, cleans the shelves and stocks them with donated food in the new building. The security system has been installed, and there are chairs in the waiting area. The group is looking for volunteers to help with the transition. Call 250-766-0125 if you can help.

▼ MISSION CREEK IN KELOWNA

Oceola Club supporting restoration project KEVIN PARNELL The Oceola Fish and Game Club is urging fish and game clubs located all around Okanagan Lake to help support restoration efforts on Mission Creek as it

flows through Kelowna. The Oceola club has donated $7,500 to the project and also committed to an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 more over the next three years as a project to widen and restore Mission

Creek to a more natural flow has picked up some serious momentum lately. “Our club is located in Lake Country but our members are from all over the valley,” said Oceola director Mike

Kamann, who also donated $1,000 of in-kind work from his company, which does habitat restoration work. “Mission Creek is really the heartbeat of Okanagan Lake. It’s the main tributary and his-

torically it used to feed the whole flood plain that is now Kelowna. “Because it was diked years ago, a lot of wildlife and riparian values were lost. All of those values contribute to the health of the lake.”

The Oceola Club has thrown its support behind a group known as the Mission Creek Restoration Initiative (MCRI).
