2016 Agricultural & Municipal Biogas Forum: Closing the Loop – Abbotsford, B.C. January 28th - 29th 2016 Biogas presents municipalities and agricultural operations with an opportunity to take advantage of underutilized organic material to contribute towards job and wealth creation, energy self-sufficiency, and environmental sustainability. Biogas from organic material and landfills also enables municipalities and farmers to ‘close the loop’ by producing cost-competitive, carbon neutral fuel for machinery/fleets. However, knowing all of the technology options available and how they can meet your needs is a very daunting prospect. Not only are these technologies constantly changing or new one are being developed, but finding credible infor-

mation that you can trust can be challenging and time consuming. Thankfully there is the 2016 Agricultural & Municipal Biogas Forum: Closing the Loop, January 28th and 29th, at the Tradex in Abbotsford. The 2016 Agricultural & Municipal Biogas Forum has been created for municipalities, farmers, food processors, facility and fleet managers, waste haulers, project developers, consultants, and other organic waste management professionals to learn about biogas and renewable natural gas, its benefits, how it fits with municipal and agricultural operations, and outcomes and lessons learned from biogas systems in Canada, the US, Sweden, and Europe.

The 2016 Agricultural & Municipal Biogas starts at 1:30pm on Thursday January 28th with two sessions focused on agricultural biogas. In these sessions, attendees will learn about the state of onfarm biogas in Canada and Octaform’s system for biogas plants, and about nutrient management technologies, both locally and internationally, and the potential value of these nutrients for agricultural land. On Friday January 29th, attendees at the morning sessions will learn about different types of municipal biogas projects being planned or underway in B.C. and elsewhere, as well as about

municipal biogas projects in Sweden, their drivers and key lessons learned. The afternoon sessions are all about renewable natural gas, a cost-competitive carbon neutral fuel that presents the biggest opportunity for near-term, cost-neutral sustainability. Attendees will learn about the process for converting fleets/vehicles to compressed natural gas, how this is as a good stepping stone for renewable natural gas, and the reasons for doing so, as well as about technical developments and innovations in biogas to renewable natural gas upgrading technologies, and how they might fit your needs. agricultureshow.net/agri-energy-forum

We’re not talking here about the cost of living in Vancouver to make ends meet. But, where exactly is your next meal coming from? Ever thought about that? Broadly speaking, a population roughly equivalent to that of Metro Vancouver needs about 1,500 tons of food per day. Yes, per day! Even allowing for inaccuracies, the point is that is a lot of food. And as the conflict between development for housing and conserving valuable farmland continues, really, think about it, just where is our food going to come from? This desperate situation has driven some local people to take seriously the need to grow food in urban areas. A new session of talks on ‘Urban Agriculture’ takes place on Saturday morning, January 30th, during the Pacific Agriculture Show. Chaired by Gary Jones from the School of Horticulture at Kwantlen Polytechnic, first speaker Marcela Crowe, Executive Director of ‘Vancouver Urban Farming

Society’ will be setting the scene with an overview of “The emerging field of Urban Agriculture”. Chris Thoreau, partner in ‘Vancouver Urban Pedalers Cooperative’ continues by sharing his story and tells us how he and a friend are turning an idea into business reality being producers of nutritious micro-greens. But starting such businesses is not all plain sailing: policies and red tape are still part of every-day life. Ben Newman of ‘Out of the Box’ will chat about some of the challenges facing such new ventures. Dr. Lenore Newman, Canada Research Chair in Food Security & the Environment at UFV will round off the morning. FARSHA changes name to AgSafe The Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA) is rebranding as AgSafe to better reflect the work they do and the community they serve. For over twenty years the association has been the expert on safety in the workplace for BCâ€™s agriculture industry. Launched in 1993 as a joint initiative of WorkSafeBC (Workersâ€™ Compensation Board of British Columbia), the BC Agriculture Council and the Canadian Farmworkersâ€™ Union, AgSafe is committed to creating safer work environments for all individuals working in the agriculture industry. AgSafeâ€™s mission is to reduce the number of agriculture-related workplace deaths and injuries. Innovation Day SRCtec’s Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program and the Pacific Agriculture Show Building off the energy and success of the first ever Agri-Tech Trade Show and Mixer in the region, held in Abbotsford last October, the Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) is following up with Innovation Day, a mini agri-tech trade show in the Scotiabank Pavilion at the Pacific Agriculture Show. This trade show represents the scope and importance of technology within the agriculture sector and lets attendees investigate and compare the latest technologies, trends and techniques available. Come see what all the buzz is about on January 29 from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. The 2015 Pacific Agriculture show attracted over 8,000 attendees who saw over 300 exhibiting companies. Being a part of an event of this magnitude will allow the region to see just how stimulating some of the newest innovations in agri-tech are. Some of SRCTec’s Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program participants will be a part of this event, along with three speakers who will provide presentations on topics such as “Advantages of UAV’s In Agriculture Applications” (Paul Bennett/Aerobotika), “The Impact of the FDA Foreign Supplier Verification Program Ruling on Canadian Food Exports” (Steven Burton/Burton Software) and “Next-Generation Efficient Heat and Water Management Technologies” (Dr. Majid Bahrami/Watergenics Inc.). Tickets for this event can be purchased at the Tradex and are $14. The event runs from January 28th to January 30th. TOPICS INCLUDE: • Provincial resources for farm water management • Further weather: What can be said? A resurgence of hops Hops has been a great crop in the Fraser Valley in the past, but by 1980s, the industry was diminished and finally completely vanished in the late 80s. One can still find the occasional volunteer plant growing on some power or telephone pole. With interest in hops

resurging because of specialty breweries that would like to give special flavouring and try to make novel flavours, hops has become popular again in recent years and acreage is increasing. In the session at the show, we will try to explore the possibilities, varieties, how

to grow the crop and cope with problems associated with it and finally figure out the business case, as inputs up front are big. Will the harvested and properly dried crop make it in the marketplace? Have we got something to offer that doesn’t yet exist? Will be able to

create the flavours that the beer makers will want to use? Is this going to be a big industry again in the Fraser Valley? Those are the questions placed in front of the presenters and no doubt there will be questions from the floor further exploring the possibilities.
