Let the competition begin.

Yet another high-speed passenger service from Victoria to Vancouver is expected to ramp up competition, resulting in cheaper rates for customers.

Earlier this week, Fast Reliable Seaways (FRS), a global ferry and shipping group, announced it acquired a majority interest in Clipper Navigation Ltd.

As part of the acquisition, Clipper is establishing a high-speed ferry service from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria.

The roughly three-hour catamaran service will include on-board amenities and is expected to be up and running in the spring in time for the start of the tourist season.

“I’m thrilled. This is a hand-picked partnership on my part. I have known FRS for many years. They’re a wonderful operation and they have a very similar

way of looking at things to ours,” said Meredith Tall, founder and CEO of Clipper. “We have similar visions for North American expansion.”

Sailing times have yet to be confirmed, but Tall speculated they could begin with morning departures from Vancouver and a sailing back in the evening.

The vessel has yet to be acquired (they hope to have it finalized in the next few weeks), but will be custom tailored to the route, to include ride control, better seakeeping ability and longer to

Introducing Victoria’s new youth poet laureate Pamela Roth Victoria News

Growing up as a black female in a predominantly white town in Ontario, AnnBernice Thomas has gone through a lot of experiences she describes as weird.

One time in Grade 10, her teacher was talking about a disease that was found in Africa, then pointed at Thomas as if she should know the answer. Another peer once told her she wasn’t black because she wasn’t in a ghetto. “I thought that was very interesting for him to tell me that and how racist that was. It happened in Grade 10 and I’m still like wow,� she said. “You almost become a spokesperson for the entire race...It makes me feel like my entire identity and who I am as a middleclass black woman doesn’t really exist.�

Thomas eventually turned to poetry, giving her a forum to express herself and hear her own voice.

Now a spoken word artist and screenplay writer in her second year at the University of Victoria, the 19-year-old writes about race and cultures, family, and mental health issues — among many other topics she says are important to the world.

She’s also performed at the Ferguson Rally in 2014, the Scotiabank Aids Walk

Ann-Bernice Thomas is Victoria’s new youth poet laureate. for Life in 2015 and stagemanaged and performed in the applied theatre show, Waste Management in 2015, which toured different high schools discussing dumpster diving, capitalism and the world of waste we have created for ourselves.

But now Thomas has a different platform to share her poetry for the next 12 months as Victoria’s new youth poet laureate.

Serving as a champion for youth and the literary arts, Victoria’s youth poet laureate is meant to inspire and engage local youth to share their stories through both the written and

spoken word.

According to the city’s arts and culture coordinator Nichola Reddington, in 2012 Victoria became the first city in Canada to have a youth poet laureate, who will be mentored by Victoria’s adult poet laureate, Yvonne Blomer.

As a youth poet laureate, Thomas will create and present new works to city council and youth council, conduct poetry readings at city and library events, along with organizing a community youth poetry gathering.

Reddington claims

having poetry readings before a council meeting is a good start to an evening often filled with serious discussions. “It’s an opportunity to sort of showcase our poetry and our youth poetry and the work they do,� said Reddington. “Their poems can also touch upon things that are happening in the community so it’s another platform for our poets to have a voice in that sort of setting with council and the public there to listen.�

Last fall, the city put out a call for nominations for poets between the ages of 14 and 24. Applicants were required to have an established body of work (written or spoken word) and recognized for notable contributions in their career.

The submissions were then evaluated by a committee of representatives from the literacy and poetry community. This year, officials received more than 10 applications — the majority from people already enrolled in university.

In the past, Reddington said there have been people as young as 15 apply for the position, but the majority are often between 18 to 23.

It was Thomas’ strength as a performance poet, doing well in competitions

in Ontario and B.C., that scored highly during the adjudication process.

But this isn’t the first time Thomas took a shot at the youth poet laureate title.

During her first attempt last year, Thomas found she didn’t have as much time as she would have liked to put into the application.

The second attempt was different, but Thomas was still surprised to hear she had been chosen.

Thomas was officially introduced as Victoria’s youth poet laureate during a council meeting last week.

She admits speaking in front of a large audience is a little intimidating at first, but it pushes her to do the best work possible. “I enjoy telling stories that matter,� she said. “I enjoy the theatrical and the lyricalness to the poems and how people can be moved to someone speaking alone. You don’t need pictures, you can just draw someone in and engage with a crowd. I think that’s really cool.�

The youth poet laureate is an honorary one-term position from Jan. 1 to Dec. 16. In addition to the year-long mentorship, the position receives a $1,750 honorarium and $1,000 of project funding from the city and Greater Victoria Public Library. editor@vicnews.com

New ferry service to start in the spring Continued from Page A1

The high-speed jet catamaran will have a capacity of up to 300 passengers, with daily sailings departing Vancouver in the morning and Victoria in the afternoon. It is expected to begin preliminary sailings this summer with full operations beginning in the 2017 tourism season.

A similar service was launched between Vancouver and Victoria in 1994 by Royal Sealink Express, however it was eventually halted due to low ridership and seasickness among passengers.

With two similar services, Tourism Victoria President and CEO Paul Nursey believes it will create healthy competition between companies. “The market is growing very quickly,� he said. “Though we do live on an island, they (tourists) have to get here somehow, so what mode and choice that they make in terms of the customer will come down to intense competition around price, service, and their ability to promote their product.�

Greater Victoria Harbour Authority CEO Ian Robertson said two companies investing in a similar service shows the market for a harbourto-harbour service is growing.

“What this says to me is you’ve got two widely known, well-respected international marine companies both saying they believe there’s a market opportunity to service Vancouver and Victoria and I think that’s great news,� Robertson said.

With Clipper’s support, FRS will also launch a ferry service from Florida to Cuba, pending government approval.

Proposals sought for Car Free YYJ The Downtown Victoria Business Association has issued a request for proposals for the production of Car Free YYJ 2016 on June 19.

The first annual Car Free YYJ was held last June with an estimated 20,000 people taking in the festival on six blocks of Douglas Street from Herald to Fort Street. Car Free YYJ 2015 hosted more than 200 vendors, three stages with programmed entertainment, a 7,000 square-foot park on Douglas Street, a half-pipe in the middle of the street, and a familyfriendly beer garden. Initial plans look for more growth for this year.

Free transit offered for new refugees The Victoria Regional Transit Commission (VRTC) and the InterCultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) are rolling out free transit passes to new refugee families in the capital region.

Last December, the VRTC voted to supply refugees (regardless of country of origin) a year’s worth of free transit from the time of their arrival in Victoria. The program is funded by the VRTC, and administered by B.C. Transit and the ICA. To enrol in the free transit program, newcomers with refugee background who have arrived or will be arriving between Dec.1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2016 need to go to the ICA for an intake session.

The ICA is a non-profit society and a federally registered charity, contracted by the federal government to provide settlement services to newly arriving immigrants and refugees.

To many children, Bonnie Clark may seem like Santa Claus.

Clark would give out gifts to children living in the Pacifica Housing complex in Victoria where she lived for roughly a decade, along with any other children she knew, for their birthdays or Christmas.

Though she didn't have a lot of money, she would go to the dollar store and purchase books, jewelry boxes or knick knacks with inspirational sayings.

Each wrapped present was marked indicating whether it was for a boy or girl.

“All the kids in her complex that she lived in, she always made sure they got one,” said Langford resident Pat Kennedy, a longtime friend of Clark’s.

“Bonnie was a great person, she loved kids. She'd do any-

thing for everybody and she'd go out of her way to help anybody.”

Kennedy originally met Clark 35 years ago. He and a friend were walking down the street when they saw Clark out with her friend.

“We were sitting around thinking about going to a bluegrass festival, so we invited them to come with us,” Kennedy laughed.

“We've been good friends ever since.”

Friends of Bonnie Clark are raising money to build a playground in her name.

in Clark's quadriplegia.

The B.C. Supreme Court ruled Dixon was not criminally responsible for Clark's broken neck and acquitted him on a charge of aggravated assault and found him guilty of the lesser included offense of common assault.

But being in a wheelchair never slowed her down.

Clark worked as an advocate for people who were newly paralyzed or victims of assault and helped with counselling at victim services for years.

But in September of last year, Clark passed away, four months shy of her 51st birthday.

To honour her legacy, Kennedy along with some of Clark’s other friends, have raised more than $2,000 for the construction of a new $10,000 playground in Clark’s housing complex. The current playground hasn't been replaced in 25 years.

Heritage homes on the move Police not seeing an

increase in property crime around tent city

A handful of heritage homes in James Bay are being relocated and restored to their former glory to make way for the Capital Park development behind the B.C. legislature.

Two heritagedesignated houses at 524 and 526 Michigan St. were moved from Michigan Street to the corner of Dallas Road and Dock Street earlier this week.

According to city documents, the Prout House (524 Michigan St.), named after its original owner William Prout in 1891, is a twostorey wood-frame Victorian-era Italiante designed home. It was used as a rental property by Charles Beaven in the early 1900s, demonstrating an increased need for rental housing during a time of social and economic transitions in the neighbourhood.

Its neighbour is the Beaven/Macabe Residence (526 Michigan St), an Edwardian-era wood home. First built in 1911, it was used as a boarding house in the mid 1910s.

The one-kilometre move was a massive undertaking by developer Jawl Properties in partnership with Concert Properties.

The heritage homes were moved by truck and taken to a barge loading site off Store Street. The barge then was towed under the Johnson Street Bridge to Esquimalt Habour where it sat for roughly 24 hours. Wednesday morning, the barge made its way to Odgen Point, where a ramp was installed to bring the houses to shore.

“It was no small

undertaking to do these relocations and restorations,” said Robert Jawl with Jawl Properties.

“These homes are part of the architectural history of Victoria, and specifically part of the architectural legacy of the James Bay community and as much as we want to facilitate the construction of new office, retail and residential space in the Capital Park development, we also want to acknowledge the beauty and history embedded in those buildings.”

In their final resting place, the houses will be rehabilitated back to their former glory

as single-family homes.

They will also be designated as heritage structures and put back on the market for sale.

In addition to the two houses, three heritage houses on Superior Street are also being relocated to the south east corner of the Capital Park project along Michigan Street, putting them side-byside with two other heritage structures that sit on province-owned land. The three homes will be converted into 13 rental units.

Despite claims of an increase in crime from those living near Victoria’s tent city, police say they’ve only received a handful of reports thus far.

According to police, there were two reports of property crimes in the area during the first two weeks of 2015. In the first two weeks of 2016, there has only been one.

A temporary shelter for the campers opened earlier this month at the former Boys and Girls Club building on Yates Street, but it only has the capacity to house 40 people until the end of April.

In the meantime, the government has issued a letter to the campers, encouraging them to work with outreach workers on-site to find alternate shelter due to an increasing number of health and safety concerns. The campers, however, said they aren’t going anywhere.

Embrace changes at the Empress hotel When the Fairmont Empress Hotel announced last week that it was closing the doors of the Bengal Lounge at the end of April, it caused quite a stir.

One woman began a petition to prevent the closure of the lounge. In less than 24 hours, the petition had 1,092 supporters. The petition website was filled with strong comments, with one man saying many of the hotel’s patrons will be gone once the lounge closes its doors.

Opponents of the closure also claim the new owners are destroying everything that makes the hotel unique and beautiful. One woman called the closure of the Bengal a “travesty.”

Really? Closing a lounge for a hotel makeover is a travesty? That seems a little dramatic.

When you listen to the hotel’s decision to close the Bengal, it all makes sense.

The hotel is undergoing $30 to $40 million in renovations so it can be modernized — and it should be since guests are paying a hefty price to stay there. Would you spend hundreds of dollars to stay in an old, outdated room with no televison, bathroom and two twin beds like it once was?

The owners want to create more vitality at the centre of the building where the dining room and tea lobby are housed. That includes rebranding the tea lobby as the lobby lounge with a bar.

A bar will be added to the restaurant as well, which is also being renovated complete with a new menu. Staff at decided three bars at the hotel just wasn’t feasible.

Instead of complaining about the closure — and thinking you have a right to tell a business what to do with its property — head to the Bengal Lounge before it closes and have a toast to what the new chapter at the Empress will bring. Change is inevitable and often times it is for the best.

Readers respond: Embrace diversity in our community For many years I have had my rented property and King’s Park in Fernwood seperated by only a chain-link fence.

My suite, that I cannot afford to move out of, overlooks the park. Since the bylaw was passed to allow the homeless to erect tents in parks many years ago, I have endured the homeless shenanigan’s, a mere metres from where I sleep in a real bed with a roof over my head.

I have seen, heard and endured it all. No one did anything. Our neighbourhood park was taken over, every day and night from the first sign of warm weather to winter and we’ll expect them back again as we head into spring. The “campers” avert the bylaw by putting their tents down at 7 a.m. but they stay in the park, after all, it’s a public park and when you’re broke and homeless, where else is there to go? And yes, some days I’d come home from work, just want to chill on my deck and I’d have to listen to it. I became used to the random screams, fights and profanity that is all part and parcel of desperation, addiction and mental illness, and it would wake me up in the middle of the night sometimes.

At least the city finally acknowledged that they have to urinate and defacate

and afforded them port-o-poties (at the tent city by the law courts). That never happened in Fernwood, the park was their washroom. But I accepted it all, in lieu of being angry because anger did not serve me or make them go away. I respected their space and they respected mine.

I am one of those “bleeding hearts” who has on three occasions gone to Super InTent City to help feed them a hot breakfast on a damn cold day and I am someone who found the time to volunteer at the new 40 bed transitional home.

Fernwood embraces the diversity that is our community and these folks, like it or not, are a part of our community. For the mostpart, they are respectful of our quiet, clean, family oriented neighbourhood but dysfunction is to be expected, where they came from and what they’re going through is very stressful.

Be a part of the solution, not the problem, because they are not going away anytime soon.

Empress hotel needs to be protected The new owners of the Empress

in Victoria are destroying everything that makes this national heritage historic landmark unique and beautiful.

Their plans to gut and “modernize” the hotel’s interior will destroy its magnificent and storied history. The decision to shut down the Bengal Lounge, is frankly a travesty and cannot be allowed (there is in fact a petition circulating in order to stop this from happening). This beautiful historic building needs to be protected and restored, not mangled and mutilated by a billionaire real estate development company, that intended to tear it down and turn it into condos!

It would be able to go back in time so I could speak to my ancestors and find out about their lives, the hardship and discrimination they encountered. Then, I would come back to the present and write a best-selling novel.

10. What's the one thing you haven't done that you'd love to do?

Hold a baby panda at a panda sanctuary in China.

11. If you could see one concert, what would it be?

Well, I have seen Diana Ross and the Supremes and Guitarist Les Paul

which were pretty awesome. Carole King would be on the top of my list or Roberta Flack or Earth, Wind and Fire.

Blowing hot and cold at Motor City’s Big Auto Show DrivewayCanada.ca |

Detroit, MI – A chill wind blew snow outside but inside the huge Cobo Hall conference centre, a great deal of hot air accompanied every new model announcement.

More than 5,000 journalists from 60-plus countries make this annual pilgrimage to the North American International Auto Show. Dozens of new cars and trucks are revealed to applause and some gasps though not nearly as loudly as in the old days before the internet. Now carefully orchestrated ‘leaks’ and ‘sneak peeks’ cut surprises to the minimum. Nevertheless, it’s still the hottest place to be for the auto world despite the frigid conditions outside.

Space limitations prevent us from parading the dozens of vehicles revealed over the two-day official preview, which follow the ‘special invite

only’ previews that the manufacturers offer up in the days running up to the show! You get the picture: so here’s just a taste of what caught our eye on the show floor – detailed specs and prices are months away in many cases.

Chevrolet introduced the 2017 Cruze Hatchback, set to go on sale in the fall of this year. The liftgate opens to offer 524 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat. With the rear seat folded, cargo space expands to 1,189 litres. Yes! – Finally, a good replacement for the Pontiac Vibe, which died with the brand.

It features standard 1.4-litre turbo engine with direct injection and Stop/Start technologies plus electric power steering. Sayeth Chevy: “More standard safety features than any other compact car – including Corolla and Civic – with available

adaptive features including Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Park Assist.”

The all-new Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew adds room for passengers and gear, in what the manufacturer boasts “expanding choice and versatility in the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 Raptor ever.”

See what I mean about hyperbole-charged hot air?

In the real world, the Raptor will do its own talking. It has an all-new 3.5-litre EcoBoost, all-new 10-speed transmission and torqueon-demand transfer case making it more powerful yet efficient and easy to drive off-road.

We thought the Chrysler Pacifica crossover would simply leave the world’s stage, a little embarrassed about ever seeing the light of day. Nothing wrong with it other than it’s just a ho-hum kind of vehicle. But there it was/ they were on the Detroit stage: the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid, designed to “revolutionize the minivan segment with nearly 40 new minivan firsts.” (It’s now a minivan).

It offers more than 100 standard and available safety and security features, including 360-degree Surround View camera, ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Hold and Forward Collision Warning-Plus.

Okay, we’ll buy that for now. Looks good and promises much in performance and utility.

tures’. Ahem, call us old fashioned but we’ll stick with the ‘options’ option from here on in!)

Honda unveiled the all-new 2017 Ridgeline truck promising “superior on-road performance – with the segment’s best handling, ride quality, cabin quietness and all-weather traction capabilities”.

Frankly, it’s in tough in a tough market full of tough successful domestic and import competitors.

A round of applause for KIA, the Korean company that continues to challenge its big brother Hyundai and indeed the rest of the market with interesting concepts and production cars. The Telluride concept is its take on a premium large sport utility vehicle, featuring three-rows of seating for seven passengers. Notable are the front doors and rearhinged back doors that swing open 90 degrees in opposing directions.

Talking of Hyundai, it unveiled its G90 premium luxury sedan for the new Genesis brand. Don’t snigger, these guys know what they are doing . . . now. Five additional Genesis models are planned for launch within the next five years.

Moving upmarket, sorry Hyundai you will be in that rarefied air soon. The first ever BMW M2 is the entry-level model to the brands renowned M performance line-up. It will feature a newly developed M TwinPower Turbo technology 3-litre, 6-cylinder engine producing 365 hp, capable of soaring to 100 klicks in around 4.2 seconds.

The Lexus LC500 is mighty purty. The premium Japanese brand has teased us with its LF-LC Concepts, now we have a production 2+2 coupe.

Its all-aluminum, 32-valve V8’s output is expected to generate 467 hp, using a newly developed 10-speed automatic transmission. The Acura Precision Concept model made its world debut and these eyes reckons it’s even more purty than the Lexus. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Around town, Naz Rayani’s name is synonymous with philanthropy, community service and corporate social responsibility.

As the owner of Heart Pharmacy and the driving force behind the annual World Partnership Walk, Rayani is often asked for his advice on leadership.

“If you can get comfortable with asking for help, you can bring a lot of people with you,” he advises. “I think leading by example and asking from the heart are powerful forms of leadership. I have always felt that talking to people and asking for their support and help is the best way to engage.”

At the 2012 Victoria Leadership Awards gala, Rayani received Leadership Victoria’s prestigious lifetime achievement award in community leadership, sponsored for many years by Il Terrazzo Ristorante.

He recalls the ceremony with fondness.

“It was a very emotional evening for me. I was so happy to have my family and friends in attendance,” he said. “Having my granddaughter on stage with me was a special treat. It was totally unexpected and very humbling to be recognized in this way.”

In addition to the lifetime achievement award, Leadership Victoria recognizes a graduate of their community leadership development program with an annual alumni award in recognition of significant contributions to addressing community needs.

The inaugural alumni award was presented in 2010, and Laura Walsh, now the director of development for Our Place Society, was honoured to be the first recipient.

“I’ve recognized that even with a busy professional and family life, there is huge value and learning to be gained from volunteering,” she says. “Many of the causes that enrich our society rely heavily on volunteers — recognizing this vital work makes for a healthier community.”

Outside of her day job, Walsh volunteers locally with the Ukrainian Cultural Centre and internationally with the global Girl Guiding movement, helping to promote girls rights and empowerment. Recently, she joined the board of the Pacific Parkinson Research Centre.

Rayani and Walsh are two of the many exemplary community leaders recognized since 2005, when the Victoria Leadership Awards began with a common vision and the energy and enthusiasm of a number of partners, sponsors and dedicated individuals.

Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) is encouraging students to lead a healthy, active lifestyle with the opening of a new state-of-the-art fitness centre last week.

The Scott Fitness Centre, located at the Pemberton Woods campus on Bank Street,

includes spin bikes, treadmills, weight machines and space for yoga, dance, karate and a weight-lifting club.

Prior to renovations, it was a 1932 middle school gym. Now, the multi-purpose centre has the capacity to hold two to three classes of 20 students, along with co-curricular users.

There is also a smart TV to show students how to plan their fitness workouts and how to use the machines.

Foreign buyers may have less of an impact on B.C.’s housing market than previously thought, according to a new report from B.C. Notaries.

In November, the society surveyed 133 of its members on key real estate topics, including the perceived influx of foreign buyers.

The report found that only five per cent of all residential real estate transactions managed

by B.C. Notaries across the province were from foreign buyers.

The report’s release comes as the provincial government considers taking measures

to combat the high cost of housing in B.C. “Our survey results, which indicate that the vast majority of real estate purchases in B.C. are made by B.C. or Canadian residents, points to the need for careful consideration of any related legislative changes,” said B.C. Notaries president Tammy Morin Nakashima in a statement.

While the report shows foreign buyers representing seven per cent of residential sales in Greater Vancouver, Island-based notaries reported only two per cent of their transactions came from buyers outside the country.

Additionally, while foreign buyers made up more than half of the clients for a few notaries in the Lower Mainland, the 20 notaries surveyed on the Island said foreign buyers made up no more

“We haven’t seen a marked increase at all in foreign buyers,”said Laurie Salvador, a notary with Salvador Davis and Company in Sidney. “We generally have maybe just a handful a year

— maybe under six — and that hasn’t changed in many years.”

According to the report, the Island’s housing market has more in common with the Fraser Valley or the Okanagan, with lower foreign ownership compared to Vancou-

ver. But despite the small numbers, 39 per cent of Island notaries reported an increase in foreign buyers, not far from 42 per cent of Greater Vancouver notaries.

Nonetheless, Salvador said the provincial average of five per cent shows that foreign sales are not making a significant dent in B.C. real estate markets.

“If it’s five per cent, that means 95 per cent of the people either live in British Columbia or somewhere else in Canada, and that says a lot about the health of our economy and the desire to live in British Columbia,” she said. “People want to live in British Columbia because we have so much to offer. It’s British Columbia that is the attraction.”

Rather, Salvador attributed the ongoing increase of house prices on Vancouver Island to such factors as a lull in development

over the last five to seven years, creating an issue of supply and demand.

She noted the low ownership numbers should be studied by the provincial government as it determines if legislation is appropriate to address housing affordability.

“When we’re talking about government possibly imposing taxes for that, I’m sure they will discuss this with all the various players and make a wise decision if they feel that’s necessary. But it wouldn’t be a huge moneymaker if it’s only five per cent of the real estate, and it might deter people,” said Salvador.

“We certainly don’t want to discourage people that can afford to purchase in British Columbia. I think what people are afraid of is that those buyers are driving up prices, but I don’t think that’s the case at all.” editor@vicnews.com

A chill maybe in the air but motorcycle riders are already thinking about their first ride of the spring.

BMW Motorrad is debuting its 2016 S1000XR and showing its modified F700GS and F800GS models.

Triumph has introduced the next generation of Bonneville with five new motorcycles.

Kawasaki promises to up the wow factor with its Ninja ZX-14R bike, which

features advanced electronics, an innovative frame and ultra-powerful 1,441cc inline four-cylinder engine.

Sports Roundup Registration begins for minor fastball

Sooke Minor Fastball is holding registration for the 2016 season.

The league includes players from under 8 to 19 and includes league play, weekend tournaments and district playoffs.

Registration is Feb. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.; Feb. 13, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Feb. 16, 6 to 8 p.m. and Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All registration takes place at SEAPARC Leisure Complex lobby.

After years of spinning around between municipal councils, the Sooke Horseshoe Pitching Association has finally begun construction of its pitches on Sooke River Road.

The association expects to open six pitches by the end of February and another six later this year.

Association members are now clearing and leveling off the land, situated across from Fred Milne Park.

And though it doesn’t look like much yet, it’s a solid start for the association and its 12 members, said Rick Hobday, president.

Hobday hopes the number of members will rise once the pitches are finished and ready to go.

“It’s a place to do this, and we thank everyone who has supported us so far,” he said.

While the Galloping Goose connecting trail will pass through behind the course, it still leaves

sufficient space to accommodate the 12 planned pitches.

The biggest problem so far are amenities such as washrooms, but Hobday said they’ll cross that bridge when they get to it, so for the time being, the Sooke Community Association will provide use of its washrooms.

A clubhouse and an expansion of another eight pitches (bringing it to a total of 20) is also planned, but that won’t happen until the horseshoe association acquires more property from the Agricultural Land Reserve.

As the association grows, it will be able to hold both provincial and national tournaments.

Memberships for juniors are free up to age 18, while membership costs $30 per year. Participants must supply their own horseshoes.
