In just a few months, a piece of Langley history could be lost forever, with the demolition of the former South Carvolth school.

It’s not the loss of the building itself that has artist Toni Williams worried, it’s the

mural she painted on the exterior wall of the gymnasium nearly 16 years ago.

“I was really proud of it,” the artist recalled while walking through the overgrown grass surrounding the boarded up school on 200 Street near 8 Avenue.

“The mural reflects the heart of what this community has been.”

In May 2000, Williams and fellow artist Judy Jordison spent three weeks creating the massive painting that depicts a quintessential rural Langley scene. Williams donated her work — saving the school $5,000 — and South Carvolth’s PAC raised funds to help pay for the paint.

The mural captures a distinct moment in

time in southern Langley, with every image inspired by the people and activities of that area.

The focal image in the centre shows two Clydesdale horses that used to stand by the edge of a fence on 16 Avenue near 186 Street in Surrey.

Firefighters and paramedics extracted a man from a flipped-over semi truck on Highway 1 near the 232 Street overpass in Langley on Wednesday morning. The tanker, carrying milk, flipped into a ditch at around 9 a.m. The driver sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash, which closed the freeway to westbound traffic for about six hours.

Police in Aldergrove were out in full force Thursday morning after they were called by a man claiming he had been shot.

But Langley RCMP investigators now are in the process of piecing together what actually took place, after a doctor indicated the victim was not, in fact, shot.

Police were first called around 4 a.m. to a home in the 27100 block of Fraser Highway where a man had arrived and indicated he had been shot. It is unclear how far in advance of the phone call he had been injured, said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.

Officers located the victim, a 43-year-old man who appeared to have suffered trauma to his shoulder. He was taken to hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

Police were led to believe the ‘shooter’ may be in the area and out of an abundance of caution the Emergency Response Team was called out.

Prior to their arrival, police were told by hospital staff that the injuries suffered by the victim do not appear to be consistent with being shot.

The request for ERT was cancelled and investigators continued with their investigation looking for witnesses to this incident.

The extent of the man’s injury aren’t fully known.

On the left stands Williams’ son, Chaz, and her sister’s dog, which acts as the guardian of the mural. The purple-leafed tree is a reflection of an actual tree that stands a few feet in front of the wall, and the grass painted in front is meant to blend into the grass growing on the ground below.

“It’s a very close community and I think that mural represents South Langley,” said Carey, now 27, who jokes that the image of her reading on the mural is her “claim to fame.”

“It represents country life. It represents the close community we were all a part of there. It represents all of the kids that went to South Carvolth — it’s a piece of South Langley history.

“And Toni is a local painter. Why would we get rid of a piece of art that is done by a local painter who has children that have grown up in the community and now grandchildren growing up in the community? It doesn’t make sense to me.”

South Carvolth Elementary first opened in the 1960s, and after years of decreasing

enrolment, was shut down in 2006. Metro Vancouver purchased the five-acre property in 2011 to be added to Campbell Valley Regional Park, which surrounds the site.

Most recently, the building was rented out to the Roots and Wings Montessori School.

But now, as it sits vacant, Metro Vancouver Parks has decided to deconstruct the building and return the lot back to park land. Although there are no immediate plans for what the space will become, Wendy DaDalt of Metro Vancouver said it could be used as an overflow parking lot during events. Having a space that is already disturbed saves them from building a lot on untouched land somewhere else in the park, she said.

“We love the mural that’s on the gym, it captures the spirit of this community and the landscape,” DaDalt said. “(But) the plan is to deconstruct the building, which unfortunately involves

losing the mural.”

The deconstruction on outside portions, such as a well and utility lines, will begin soon, and the building is expected to be removed sometime this year.

Metro Vancouver contacted Williams to let her know of the situation, and is open to suggestions on ways to preserve the artwork.

Since finding out last week, Williams has brainstormed a few ideas, including creating a kiosk on the site with other school memorabilia, creating a climbing wall, or even moving the pieces to the equestrian centre at High Point, but she is still not sure what can be done.

Now, she’s turning to the public for help.

Two Langley brothers have been awarded the Vancouver Police Board’s highest civilian honour, the Certificate of Merit, for their roles in saving a life in August 2014.

The two were among a larger group of individuals and officers honoured for acts of bravery during a ceremony at the Roundhouse Community Centre on Tuesday.

In August 2014, Brian and Graham Haddon were driving with their family along Marine Drive during the morning rush hour, on their way to the Vancouver airport. The brothers were en route to the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland, a trip that they make annually to compete as members of the SFU Pipe Band.

As they passed beneath the Knight Street overpass they heard horrific screams coming from a female motorcyclist who had just been run over by an SUV driving down the ramp.

The Haddon family knew they needed to help.

“I could see she was pinned under the front of the SUV,” said Brian on Tuesday after coming

home from the ceremony.

“When you see something like that, a switch just flips and you move into action. I think it helps that my parents are both first responders so it’s what we’ve always known and seen.”

The family car pulled over and both brothers jumped out, running back into traffic to help lift the SUV off the motorcyclist.

Together with their father and another motorist they were able to provide enough space between the woman on the ground and the car that she could be pulled out.

“The traffic was heavy and moving quickly at that time of the day, and we were very concerned that all of the people involved at the scene had the potential to be injured by the passing cars being driven by distracted drivers, most looking at the rescue effort instead of the road—some even taking pictures with their phones as they drove past at 60 km/h,” recalls mom Lori Haddon.

“It was a very dangerous situation for everyone involved.”

During the rescue Brian sustained a burn to his calf from the exhaust pipe of the motorcycle while holding the SUV up in the air.

“It hurt but I knew I had to keep lifting the car,” he said.

Once the motorcyclist was out of danger on the side of the road the Haddons rendered first aid until the Vancouver Fire Department crew arrived. As soon as the VFD took over her care, the family got back on the road in time to make the flight to Edinburgh.

The Haddons found out later that the motorcyclist sustained only minor injuries, thanks to them.

“It was definitely one of the more memorable trips to Scotland,” said Brian. “My leg was bubbling a bit through the flight.”

Brian, 20, is a third-year health sciences student and hopes to become a Vancouver police officer.

Graham, 19, is a second-year arts student, but is studying sciences and math, with the goal of pursuing a degree in biomedical physiology and kinesiology.

After he completes his degree at SFU he will train to become a respiratory therapist.

The pair said the award is a “great honour” and that they were two among many others who had stepped up to save a life.

More en Français at fort’s Vive Les Voyageurs Festival Second week of French school programs added by popular demand Because there was so much interest, the Langley Chapter of Canadian Parents for French is sponsoring a second week of school programs for the Vive Les Voyageurs Festival to fill demand from local teachers.

“When we heard from the fort that the spots had been filled before some Langley teachers were able to register, we decided to work together to allow more students to attend,” said Michele Dyck, president of Canadian Parents for French, Langley.

For the last several years the Fort Langley National Historic Site has hosted a popular, week-long festival of French Canadian culture featuring Métis dancing, French musicians, and food.

While the event is open to the public, it is also an annual attraction for Lower Mainland schools.

This year all the class places were full before a number of Langley schools could register.

On learning of this, Canadian Parents for French, Langley Chapter arranged with Parks Canada to sponsor a second week to accommodate local schools; six Langley schools are now scheduled to attend.

In addition to sponsoring the second week, Canadian Parents for French will be on site at the National Historic Site on the morning of Saturday Jan. 23.

The first five families to join Langley Canadian Parents for French will receive a free annual pass for the fort.

All Langley CPF member families who visit are eligible for a draw to win one of five annual passes.

The third annual Coldest Night of the Year Winter Walk takes place on the evening of Feb. 20, starting from the Gateway of Hope homeless shelter.

Langley RCMP have released surveillance photos of an unusual car theft, which took place this month and a photo of a person of interest in the crime.

On Jan. 2, police were called about a vehicle that had been stolen overnight from a parking garage in the 8900 block of 202 Street.

Review of the surveillance footage shows a large newer black pickup truck towing the stolen Jetta out of the parking garage.

RCMP seek hit-and-run driver who injured cyclist in Willowbrook Langley RCMP are attempting to track down a hit-and-run driver who struck a cyclist on Dec. 22. Langley RCMP said a man riding a bicycle at the intersection of 66A Avenue was struck by a northbound vehicle making an illegal left turn from the Willowbrook Connector.

The vehicle is described as a blue Honda CRV. The cyclist suffered cuts to the top of his head

Rae Maj is a newcomer to politics, but not to community issues.

The long-time Langley resident, who filed her nomination papers as a candidate in the civic by-election on Jan. 14, was appointed to the Langley City Board of Variance committee just over two years ago.

The five-member independent body mostly handles requests from residents for the relaxation of regulations for siting, size and dimensions of buildings where compliance with the City’s Zoning Bylaw would cause an undue hardship.

Maj said she has enjoyed serving the community on the board and that is what has fueled the first-time candidate’s interest in running for office.

“Most people (who come before the board) are like you and me,” Maj said.

“They want to live in a place that’s close to their values.”

Her priority, if elected, is to improve the downtown of Langley City, both literally and in terms of its reputation.

“I feel that a strong business core is important,” Maj told The Times.

“Cutting down the perception of crime” is another important concern for Maj, who said many City residents need to know about the many positive things the downtown offers, such as the excellent restaurants on the one-way and the fact the area is so walkable.

“I feel that this is a vibrant community,” Maj said.

“There’s so much potential.”

A doublesided coin

This January, the dropping Canadian dollar has been dominating the news.

It seems poised to continue to do both (make the news and drop) into the next few months of the new year.

So what does it all mean?

For those travelling outside of the country, it sucks. There’s really no other word for it.

The Euro and the American dollar are both considerably higher, which means we don’t get much for our money overseas, or south of the border — two favourite destinations.

But there are undeniably opportunities as well.

More budget-conscious Canadians may take the opportunity to look at what’s available for them here at home. Hopping over the border for shopping doesn’t look so tempting anymore.

And tourists from other places face the opposite of what Canadian travellers do in terms of value for their money.

There is also an opportunity for our farmers.

We’ve been hearing dire warnings about the future price of various fruits and vegetables with California in the midst of a multi-year drought.

Now the rubber is meeting the road, with the advent of double-digit prices for a head of cauliflower.

The prices being charged by our local small farmers suddenly don’t look out of the way at all anymore. And there are all the other benefits of buying fresh, local food as well.

In fact, our low dollar creates a great reason to buy local on a lot of levels.

Maybe we’ll even start to make a few things here again.

So far, manufacturing has not ticked up like many hoped it would to help offset some of the pain being felt in the resource industries like oil and gas and mining. We’d really like to see some growth happening there, as relying on natural resource industries — usually the selling of non-renewable resources — is never a long-term plan for a sustainable economy.

I received a photo the other day captioned, “I made a salad and I’m eating healthy.”

The picture attached was a frying pan full of bacon and grease with a sprig of parsley in the middle.

If you believe it’s a salad, then it’s a salad.

From all this, I am taking the advice of my favourite folk singer, John Prine, when he tells us to “Blow up your TV and throw away your papers.”

Probably not something my editor wants to hear but in the early 20th century, heart disease was rare.

People ate from their gardens, there were less pollutants in the air and they didn’t have large corporations giving them conflicting information.

They knew what was healthy and what wasn’t.

So have a coffee in the morning, eat a salad for lunch, have a glass of wine with your steak dinner, and go for a walk.

Sometimes we’re our own worst enemy.

At least that’s what McGregor says.

ALRT/ALM/ART — or what we call SkyTrain — obsolete by 1983.

SkyTrain’s official name keeps changing because no one wants it and only seven such systems have been built since the late 1970s.

The reason for this is dead simple, people wanting good transit are very good at math and Sk-

yTrain costs more build; costs more to operate and maintain than modern LRT without any operational benefit.

Also lost to Cruz and his lot is that during the same period that SkyTrain has been on the market over 200 new light rail operations have been built or are nearing completion.

No one is asking for SkyTrain anymore, except our local cabal of SkyTrain enthusiasts, and Bombardier Inc. has hinted that production of SkyTrain may cease by the end of 2016.

Over 10 years without a sale may force the cash-strapped company to abandon SkyTrain.

What then?

Remember the Edsel?

Well, SkyTrain is more and more looking like the Edsel of transit systems; an operating museum piece and museum pieces cost a lot of money to keep in operation.

Fort Langley project under fire before it has been presented Editor: There’s a growing rumble in Fort Langley. Can you hear it?

I’m not sure why some of the usual townsfolk have picked up their gloves and come out swinging already, but at this point all they are doing is shadow boxing.

The opponent? A mystery development proposal: a concept, a theory, a rumour.

It’s true — a businessman with history in the town held a public brainstorming session.

It’s true — there is a public invitation to view some conceptual ideas based

on those brainstorming sessions.

It’s true — the people of Fort Langley are being asked to provide input to design a meaningful project on an empty lot.

It’s true — no “developer” has ever actively sought out this much community stakeholder input before.

However, sadly, it is also true that without the project even being unveiled, it is already vehemently opposed by many and they are already building a campaign of division instead of reconciliation.

And it’s needless. A community is

about the people and not the buildings.

Regardless, this is not about ideology or about the childhood memories of people who grew up there. This is not even about progress.

This is about not allowing someone the opportunity to try. To try and bring a community together to collectively add a legacy item to Fort Langley’s rich and evolving history. This will not be one man’s development, this will be a community legacy project. Or it should be anyway, if people lay down their gloves.

Proposed truck park location unsuitable for several reasons Editor: Why should Township residents care about the Surrey truck stop decision making process?

Because it is flawed and biased.

It might seem that this development proposal is too far away to matter to Township residents. It isn’t.

This could have a negative effect on water safety for residents in the Brookswood area as well as in Surrey. A prolonged water issue would not only make day-to-day life difficult, it could also cause a drop in property values, threatening life savings for everyone in the affected area.

The push for this project is coming from Surrey Coun. Tom Gill and a company called GG Metro Holdings Ltd, neither of whom will have the interests of Township residents uppermost in their minds.

Coun. Gill started the most recent efforts to change this land’s use designation to light industrial by claiming that this truck stop facility would solve Surrey’s problem with illegal truck parking by its residents.

It won’t. Independent truckers, in Surrey or anywhere else, will not be able to afford to use such a facility.

Most of Surrey’s truckers live farther north, close to Highway 10 and a truck facility located on 16 Avenue and 194 Street would be extremely inconvenient.

Now it seems Coun. Gill’s justification for this facility has shifted to serving international truckers.

In a recent edition of an American nationally distributed business publication for professional truckers, Gill is quoted: “Unfortunately when you look at B.C., I

don’t believe there is a formal USA-style truck park anywhere . . . and obviously the border, this is a key component of creating a truck parking strategy.”

This location is not ideal for international truck traffic either.

I expect my municipal representatives to serve with clarity, transparency and a commitment to the good of all. So if Coun.

Gill is concerned for independent truckers in Surrey, why would he propose a truck park in what is clearly the wrong location, would be too expensive and risks a major aquifer and salmon stream?

Why would he choose to fly in the face of advice, paid for by Surrey taxpayers, against “mega” truck parks? Why would he downplay information, bought and paid for by Surrey taxpayers, from a reputable

environmental consulting company? Why would he consider risking the health of a major source of drinking water, and a river which is teeming with salmon?

It is not as if land more suitable for such a facility is in short supply elsewhere in Surrey.

Who is looking after your long-term well being?

At the moment I am not sure anyone is.

“It’s going to be really good this year, lots is happening,” said Matheson, owner of Langley-based C&D Logistics and a father of two.

This year, the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but now includes the Rivermen’s hockey game next door in the arena at 1 p.m., followed by a free skate with the Rivermen players at 3:30 p.m. The day is by donation with 100 per cent of proceeds going to local charities.

JRFM Radio has come on as a sponsor and plans to bring musical guests.

The fieldhouse will once again be filled with activity stations ranging from bouncy castles, a velcro wall and Sumo wrestling to obstacle courses and a tug-of-war.

“Toddlers weren’t properly addressed in last year’s event so we’ve changed that,” said Matheson.

Township firefighters will be there with their fire truck, letting kids spray the hose and try to rescue someone from the smoke room.

Next door in the gym there will be face painting and a photo booth and local businesses will have tables, handing out food and products as well as getting to know the visitors.

Mr. Canuck, Mark Donnelly, will sing the national anthem at both the Rivermen game and at the Family Day event.

them and the entire facility will be dedicated to the event.

“Last year we believe there were around 2,000 people who came out. This year, we’d love it if we could reach 30,000,” he said.

Matheson is the recent winner of the Langley Chamber of Commerce Under 40 Business Person of the Year. He is involved with numerous charities, including Kimz Angels.

Angels founder Kim Snow will be at the fieldhouse, accepting donations of food and baby essentials to fill her truck.

Last year, the event raised $11,000 for local charities. This year, Township Firefighters Charitable Foundation, Basics For Babies and Life Ready are the chosen charities.

Couple ‘overwhelmed’ by community’s support Langley newlyweds dealing with cancer discovered while on their honeymoon MIRAN D A G AT H E R C O L E Ti m e s Re po r t e r

It was supposed to be the happiest vacation of their lives, but for newlyweds Luke and Angelica Rawick, their honeymoon in Victoria was cut short by a disastrous discovery.

A lump, found on the second night of their honeymoon, had the couple rushing back to Langley for emergency surgery.

Just days after their Nov. 28 wedding, doctors informed Luke, 21, and Angelica, 25, that Luke had Stage 3 testicular cancer, and it was spreading to his lungs.

Luke is now on four different types of drugs and is going through 12 weeks of chemotherapy for treatment.

As the couple grapples with the emotional and physical effects of the disease, Luke’s workplace — Milestones Langley — is doing their best to help financially.

On Wednesday Jan. 27, the restaurant, where Luke worked

as a chef prior to his diagnoses, is holding a fundraising event for the Rawicks. “(We are) very grateful, pleasantly surprised,” Angelica said in an email to the Langley Times.

“Not every workplace would do this for their employees.”

Tickets for the event are $20 and include a burger and a beer.

There will be a 50/50 draw, silent auction, head shaving event and music by local band Her Brothers.

Donations are being collected at the event and online through the GoFundMe Page, http://gofundme.com/q8h8mx9v.

The BC Hospitality Foundation has also stepped in, offering to match all donations (up to $7,500) as part of their program to provide emergency financial aid to employees in the hospitality industry during times of medical need.

“We’re honoured to be able to support Luke, who has dedicated the past few years to his friends and co-workers at Mile-

stones in Langley,” said Alan Sacks, executive director of the BC Hospitality Foundation.

“We want Luke and his wife to focus on his recovery, not worrying how to pay their bills.

“We also hope that this fundraiser will help raise our awareness within Langley and the Fraser Valley so that we can continue to help more hospitality workers facing financial challenges due to health issues.”

Angelica says they are “overwhelmed with gratitude” by the support from the community.

“Thank you for everything, it means a lot to us,” she said.

“There really are not enough words to describe how we feel right now.

“To anyone else out there who is going through this, maybe they don’t have the support we have.

“Hopefully our story will encourage (them).”

To buy or not to buy, that is often the question when it comes to the housing market.

According to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, 2015 was the second highest year for property sales in Fraser Valley’s history, with the total dollar volume of MLS sales setting a record at $12.1 billion.

When asked his thoughts on the "buy or wait" debate for homebuyers, Bob de Wit, CEO, Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association says, “I would buy now [as] interest rates will never be this low again.”

Buyers are more likely to find a ground-oriented home for sale under a half million dollars in areas like Surrey, Delta, Langley, White Rock, and Maple Ridge, where the last larger available land parcels not in the agricultural land reserve are located. These cities also feature the most cost-competitive condominium projects, says de Wit, particularly those that are near rapid transit, like Central City in Surrey and Coquitlam Centre in Coquitlam.

Those townhouse developments, especially the ones closer to Vancouver on the east side of the city, are particularly hot.

Consumers are recognizing the long-term value of property

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: FEBRUARY 29TH, 2016 The BC Farm Museum is issuing an open call to BC-based artists to design and complete one or more murals that will be located in at the BC Farm Museum, 9131 King Street in Fort Langley, BC. The deadline for submissions is February 29th 2016 at 3 p.m. at the Farm Museum office. Once artist submissions are reviewed, the shortlisted artists will be notified and discussions will be conducted to select a finalist or finalists.

This project requires artists to work with our committee to design a single or set of murals that will demonstrate how farming, pioneer life and agriculture in general has progressed in BC since the early 1800’s. The end product will be a lasting reminder of the importance of

agriculture in the development of British Columbia.

Lansdell earns prospects’ invite

Things are falling into place quite nicely for Jesse Lansdell.

Even before he joined the Chilliwack Chiefs this season, Lansdell had earned himself a scholarship offer to the University of Notre Dame, committing to the prestigious American university back in the summer.

And now, after a strong first three quarters of his rookie B.C. Hockey League season, the Langley teen has garnered himself an invitation to next week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League Top Prospects Game.

The game will be played at South Surrey Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and features 40 of the top junior A hockey players from across the five Canadian leagues.

Lansdell will be joined on the Team West roster by another Chiefs player, Langley’s Dennis Cholowski (see side story).

“It is pretty special, (especially) being a first-year player in the league,” said the 17-year-old Lansdell, a rookie left-winger with the Chiefs.

“To get that recognition, it just means that people have watched you and seen that you are working hard and have had success throughout the year.”

“There have been some ups and downs this season, but overall, it has been a good experience and a lot of fun.”

Entering play this week, Lansdell had 11 goals and 29 points in 38 games for Chilliwack. Both his goals and points place him fourth on the team and he is 16th overall among BCHL rookies in scoring.

“Jesse has done a good job as a rookie,” said Chiefs coach Jason Tatarnic.

“He is confident, very calm and poised.

“He is quite comfortable.”

The rookie is a fixture on both special teams for Chilliwack.

While playing with Yale’s prep team, he registered 17 goals and 55 points in 25 games. He also accumulated 106 penalty minutes.

At 5-10 and 198 pounds, Lansdell is a big body who plays a physical brand of hockey.

“With his size and strength, we are not surprised he has adjusted so well (to the BCHL),” Tatarnic said.

Lansdell — who turns 18 in August — is scheduled to play one more season of junior next year before he leaves for Notre Dame in the 2017/18 season.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to commit to a program like Notre Dame,” he said, adding it will be nice to play alongside former Yale team-

mate and fellow Langley hockey player Alec Capstick, of the Langley Rivermen.

The pair also played together at the bantam level with the Langley Minor Hockey Association.

Lansdell visited the Indiana university in the summer before committing to the program. “(The coaching staff) liked my style of play and they explained how I would fit in the program,” he said. “I liked the coaches and what they had to say.”

He wants to work on his strength and speed before starting his collegiate hockey career.

But in the meantime, there is the top prospects game, which will have scouts from all 30 NHL teams in attendance.

And with more NCAA players finding their way into the NHL, there is always that chance for Lansdell should he chose to pursue that route.

“Jesse will have an opportunity to showcase his talent (at the game),” Tatarnic said.

“There is always that possibility for him. He just has to continue with his development.”

As for nerves knowing you are playing in front scouts who could determine if pro hockey is in your future, Lansdell doesn’t plan on changing his approach.

“I am just excited to play in it,” he said. “Obviously it is going to be a little different (but) I’m not nervous or anything. Just treat it like any other game.”

D-man on draft radar Dennis Cholowski continues to remain on the radar of scouts ahead of this June’s NHL entry draft.

The Langley hockey player is ranked 48th among North American skaters (forwards and defencemen) according to NHL Central Scouting’s 2016 midterm rankings.

The list was released on Tuesday (Jan. 19) and Cholowski is third among BCHL players.

Cholowski is a sixfoot-one, 165-pound defenceman for the Chilliwack Chiefs.

The soon-to-be 18-year-old has five goals and 24 points in 32 games this season. He is committed to St. Cloud State for next season and is also set to play in the CJHL’s Prospects Game next week (Jan. 26) at South Surrey Arena.

The game is for the top 40 junior A hockey players from across Canada.

Altogether, 389 hockey players from around the world are on the rankings list (those playing outside of North America are on a separate list) and 210 players will be selected at the NHL draft which is set for June 24-25 at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo.

The forward said it was good to get the team back on track, especially coming off a threegame losing streak which saw the Rivermen get out-scored 17-4.

“Guys have been frustrated (with the losing) so it was nice to get back on track,” White said.

The results leave Langley with a record of 23-17-1-1 and 48 points, which is good for third place in the BCHL’s Mainland Division with 16 games to go in the regular season.

Head coach Bobby Henderson said he liked the fact his team didn’t quit when trailing after 40 minutes in both games.

“This showed the guys that we are never out of a game,” he said. “I think it is good for our confidence.”

He also liked the fact the Rivermen played solid defence in both games, giving up a combined 50 shots on goal.

“The guys played pretty well, they played hard,” Henderson said.

In addition to White’s two goals, Max Kaufman, Will Campion and Justin Fregona

had the other tallies against the Express.

The Nanaimo game saw Kaufman and Matty Saharchuk score in the second period before Adam Sinclair forced overtime with a goal in the third period. Bo Didur was in net for both games.

The Rivermen are in Prince George for a two-game road trip which began last night (Thursday) and wraps up tonight (Friday) against the Spruce Kings.

The team then returns home on Sunday afternoon to host the Express at the LEC. Game time is 3 p.m.

Giants on four-game losing streak A four-game losing streak has the Vancouver Giants back at the bottom.

The Giants wrapped up a busy stretch of four games in five days with losses across the border.

The Western Hockey League junior club fell 3-2 to the Portland Winterhawks on Monday and 5-1 to the Tri-City Americans.

The Giants also dropped two home games over the weekend, 3-2 to the Everett Silvertips last Friday and 6-4 to the Prince George Cougars on Saturday.

Both those games were at the Pacific Coliseum.

The results leave Vancouver with a record of 17-25-3-2, although they are just six points out of a playoff spot.

The Giants host the Medicine Hat Tigers tonight (Friday).

Against the Americans, Dakota Odgers had the lone Giants goal, but it came in the third period with his team down 5-0.

After getting pushed to five sets in their victory on Friday night, the Trinity Western Spartans women’s volleyball team was much more efficient the next night, winning in straight sets.

The end result was two more victories and a 15-1 record and top spot in the conference for the country’s second-ranked team.

The Spartans were in Calgary’s Jack Simpson Gymnasium for a pair of matches against the University of Calgary Dinos.

The opening night saw TWU pushed to the limit as they needed five sets to win 3-2 (25-16,18-25,2520,21-25,15-13). Sophie Carpentier led the way with 18 kills and four aces.

The second night saw setter Nikki Cornwall quarterback the Spartans attack with 42 set assists as four Spartans finished with at least nine kills — Carpentier (13 kills), Elizabeth Wendel (11 kills), Rowyn Neufeld (10 kills) and Katelyn Devaney (nine kills).

Sites Sought for Langley Ecological Services Initiative In partnership with the Langley Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (LSAF) and the Ecological Services Initiative, the Township of Langley is conducting a three-year pilot project called the Langley Ecological Services Initiative (Langley ESI).

Langley ESI is a Payment for Ecological Services (PES) program that pays farmers to maintain and enhance areas of environmental and ecological significance. It is a farmer-led initiative designed to demonstrate, analyze, and communicate the PES concept, encourage farmers to adopt Beneficial Management Practices, and make the case for establishing a long-term program in the Township.

A minimum of ten sites will be established for the Langley ESI. The pilot project sites must: • be located along the main stem of Bertrand Creek, downstream from 264 Street at 24 Avenue • be a bona fide farm, as defined by the BC Assessment Authority • have ecological values (such as woodlots and wetlands), biodiversity values, fishery habitat values, riparian habitat values, and/or presence of federally-listed species-at-risk.

LSAF is managing the Langley ESI on behalf of the Township. It will strike a site selection committee composed of farmers, Environmental Farm Plan advisors, and representatives from the BC Ministry of Agriculture, BC Ministry of Environment, and Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society.

The amount of payment to farmers is dependent on the final number of participants in the pilot project, which will start in the spring of 2016 and conclude in the summer of 2018.

Farmers are invited to apply directly to the Langley Sustainable Agriculture Foundation on or before February 5, 2016, by providing the following information: • Civic address of the property in Langley • Name(s) of the Registered Owner(s) • Name(s) of the tenant(s), if applicable • Contact information such as phone number(s) • A brief description of the type of agricultural activity on site by stating animal units and total land area dedicated to farming (to determine “farm status”) Example 1: mixed farming with 100 cows and 1,500 laying chickens on 50 acres.

Two-wheel fans to converge on the big bike show in big numbers A chill maybe in the air but motorcycle riders are already thinking about their first ride of the spring.

And this weekend they have a golden opportunity to dream a little more about the joys of the open road at the Vancouver Motorcycle Show, which runs for three days at the Tradex Exhibition Centre in Abbotsford.

Show producer Laurie Paetz says the show’s diversity and massive selection of bikes and line-up of entertainment is what fans keep coming back for.

“They really appreciate that there is so much to see – from entertainment and giveaways to classic and newly introduced bike models,” she says.

The name Ducati may be synonymous with speed but the brand has joined the cruiser world with its bike the X Diavel. Ducati is also featuring its new Multistrada 1200 Enduro, equipped with adapting power and suspension as well as ABS and traction control that ensures the operator

can tackle any kind of terrain.

BRP is also rolling out its cruiser line with additions of the F3-T and F3 Limited models to its existing F3, F3-S Special Series vehicles in the Can-Am Spyder F3 line-up. Suzuki has plans to display its newest retro cruiser,

the TU250X. For those looking to find a crossover bike, Victory rolls out its 2016 Cross Country 8-Ball, featuring creature comforts such as spacious lockable saddlebags and a sound system that can dispel wind and engine rumble.
