Pitt Meadows resident Cameron Waldbauer is up for an Oscar, for the special effects work he did in the Leonard DiCaprio movie The Revenant, part of which was filmed in B.C. and Alberta.

I

t’s just before 7:30 a.m. on a rainy Monday at the Meadowvale Starbucks.

I’m here to meet with Pitt Meadows’ own special effects artist and Oscar nominee Cameron Waldbauer, to get the goods on his line of work, his background, and his thoughts on working on – and being nominated in the special effects category for – The Revenant, starring Leonardo Dicaprio.

Waldbauer walks in. He greets me with a handshake, orders a coffee and a breakfast sandwich, and sits down across from me.

There’s certainly buzz around his nomination, but I want to start the conversation by going back a little further – specifically, to how he got into this line of work in the first place. urns out, it wasn’t exactly a direct path.

He started working with a friend at a special effects company prototyping photo vending machines, a summer job that turned into something much more.

“When the summer came to an end, I asked the company if they’d hire someone to clean up or sweep the floor or whatever.”

It was through this experience, the Garibaldi Secondary graduate found his calling in special effects.

“I started, realized I wanted to do it, then went back to school at BCIT, took machining and

mechanical design, and then went back to my job.”

Today, the 41-year-old Waldbauer is a special effects supervisor with Objects Inc. in Coquitlam. And with a number of big movies under his belt, he’s made a name for himself.

“Companies phone me and want me to do their film,” he said. Once he’s met with the director, Waldbauer accepts the contract for the film, “essentially signing me up for it, from beginning to end.”

He gets calls for projects that are mostly based in and around Vancouver. But, in the case of The Revenant for example, “we worked mostly in Calgary, with a couple weeks in Squamish.”

There’s been other jobs further afield too: “Montreal, and in Europe, and stuff like that.”

Meadows resident “depends on the film. On a studio film, we basically work 12-hour days, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.” n the set of The Revenant, however, “there was nothing like a typical workday,” he quipped.

“You’d show up, and there’d be rehearsals all day. We actually only shot during the last hour of daylight – called the magic hour – for the duration of this film, and I’ve never had that schedule before.”

Shooting outdoors on location in and around Calgary for the seven months it took to complete the film, brought about its own unique set of challenges as well.

The most notable thing on this film, he said, “was definitely the environment we were filming in; It was a very hard movie to make and there were a lot of

tough days on this film.”

For example, he said, “there’d be like six inches of snow on the ground. Then you’d show up the next day, a Chinook would roll in… and we’d have to go and get a bunch of snow from somewhere and bring it to set…”

With an extensive list of movies on his resume, and after rubbing shoulders with DiCaprio, does Waldbauer ever get starstruck? No, not really.

“I’m just doing my job, and for the most part, those people are just people on set. They’re there to do their job and we’re there to do ours.” And an Oscar nod only helps fuel that passion.

“Getting nominated never gets old,” he said. “Two years ago, I never would’ve thought I’d be in this position. Now that I have been nominated, I want to win.”

A Langley mother is pleading for witnesses after an attack in Pitt Meadows hospitalized her 20-year-old son.

Diane Shannon’s son Cole was celebrating his birthday Saturday night.

At about 2:25 a.m. Sunday morning, he was assaulted outside a Subway in the 12400 block of Harris Road.

Ridge Meadows RCMP say a group of men got into an altercation which turned violent.

Cole was knocked down and suffered a head injury.

Shannon and Cole’s other family members have spent their days at the hospital since.

“With the head Cole Shannon injury, he sleeps Assault victim a lot,” said Shannon. “It’s day to day, we don’t know what he’s going to be like when he comes out of this.” As far as Shannon can determine, her son and a friend left Roosters Country Cabaret and went to Subway.

His friend was apparently outside, phoning a cab when a group of people came up and fought Cole’s friend.

Three volunteers at a local store are feeling “helpless” after an overnight break-in on Monday night.

On Jan. 18, The Create Shop located at 22255 Dewdney Trunk Rd. in Haney Plaza, was broken into.

The front door of the store was smashed, and the Apple computer with the store’s database and records, and the POS system was stolen.

The cash register was also stolen, which had about $200 in cash inside.

Underneath the cash register, an envelope with roughly $550 inside was also taken.

The money in the envelope was from 30 advance deposits for a fundraiser for store owner Kori Sandy, who has been in and out of Royal Columbian Hospital, battling brain cancer.

The ladies painting night, planned for Jan. 30 at the store, is one of two fundraisers being hosted by three friends for Sandy, who have also stepped up to run the store on a volunteer basis.

Five years ago, Sandy was diagnosed with colon cancer.

After beating the cancer, she purchased the Create Shop in August of 2014.

in August 2015, a few weeks after relocating the store from another unit in the plaza.

While Sandy was undergoing treatment, the store – which she hadn’t had a chance to unpack yet– remained closed, creating a deficit from rent and utility costs.

In October, the three friends re-opened the store.

“It’s her dream, that’s why we all helped,” voluntary store manager Melyssa Schmidt explained.

“We want to be able to see her succeed.”

The break-in has left the three ladies feeling helpless, unsure if the fundraiser at the end of the month will be possible now.

“We don’t know if at this point it’s going to happen,”

volunteer Mo Korchinski said.

“I’m still in disbelief,” volunteer Marnie Young added, and that the stolen computer system was the stores “lifeline.”

“She [Kori] just doesn’t deserve this,” Young continued.

At this point, Schmidt said that they “are not sure what [they] are going to do.” “[We] can’t really afford to shut down.”

For now Schmidt has one simple request: “We would like our computer back, no questions asked.”

Meadowridge Sports Heroes Society is set to host its Home Town Heroes night, honouring Ross Clarkson, as well as last year’s Home Town Hero Larissa Franklin, next week.

Both inductees are scheduled to attend, said banquet coordinator Gehrig Merritt. Now, he and other organizers are extending an open invitation to everyone else in the community to come out and be part of the evening on Wednesday, Jan. 27. at Maple Ridge Secondary school.

“We’d like to get as many people out as we can to honour the inductees as best we can,” said Merritt. “It’s a motivating endeavour, and we’re looking to keep this going for some time.”

Going forward, he said, this involves “having a steward in each of our high schools, and then we’re planning to branch out from there.”

In the meantime though, 120 tickets have been printed for this year’s event, and Merritt would love to see every one of them sold.

Tickets are $50, and the doors open at 6 p.m.

The dinner is catered by Chef Randle, and there will be a silent auction as well.

Phone gouging endless

hink you pay enough for cellphone and internet service?

Well, think again. All three of the major phone/cable/internet firms – Bell, Rogers, and Telus – are either raising or have raised their rates.

Considering there are only three major carriers in Canada, who among them control how millions of us connect to one another, to the internet, and to our in-home entertainment, we don’t have much choice.

Apparently, the poor dears are strapped because of the falling Canadian dollar, and because of (of course) the cost of building new infrastructure.

These complaints are despite the fact that all three companies have hundreds of millions of dollars in profits annually in recent years. Even a bad year for Rogers recently meant earnings of just $255 million in net income. That was a bit lower than their chief rivals recently.

It’s difficult to see what we could do to change the situation, however.

Auctions of more parts of the spectrum haven’t really created much in the way of competition. Smaller firms have been either bought up by larger ones, or they haven’t extended their range enough to make them useful to many suburbanites outside of the downtown cores of big cities.

We could ask the government to step in, but their options are limited.

They could break up the big conglomerates, but that would set a possibly dangerous precedent. It’s also no guarantee that we would actually see lower prices. Nationalizing cellphone or internet service sounds like a good way to stifle the industry and drive out investment.

Canadians at present still pay among the highest rates for cellphone service in the developed world. There are some reasons for that. We have a vast landscape that needs lots of infrastructure, and a relatively small market.

But that doesn’t explain persistent high prices in areas that have been well blanketed by cellphone service for years. Unless we pry ourselves free of our phones, nothing will change.

Wrongful convictions caused by fallible human beings

he Netflix documentary Making a Murderer asks a question that has only two possible answers, both disturbing.

The documentary follows Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man who was convicted of sexual assault in the early 1980s and spent 18 years behind bars. He was then exonerated, released, and was on the verge of winning a major settlement when he was arrested again. This time, he was accused of murder, and was again convicted.

So the possibilities are, either a man who was exonMATTHEW erated of one crime went on to commit one in any case, or that the same man could be a victim of two miscarriages of justice.

It’s hard for many people to believe that police, prosecutors, judges, and juries could get things so wrong, not just once but possibly twice.

Unfortunately, while rare, wrongful convictions are far from unheard of in Canada, as well as in the United States.

Canadians have seen a string of high-profile convictions overturned. In some cases, lives were ruined in ways that are impossible to set completely right, no matter how many apologies are given, no matter how much is paid in compensation.

What could possibly be done for the family of David Milgaard?

The Saskatchewan man was still a teenager when he was convicted of raping and CLAXTON killing Gail Miller.

Milgaard would spend most of the next 23 years in prison. He even escaped twice – on his second attempt, he was recaptured after 77 days on the loose, and shot by the RCMP during his capture.

But Milgaard was unequivocally inno-

cent. Later tests and evidence would show that it was Larry Fisher, a serial rapist, who had killed Miller.

At least the resolution of that case had a conclusion that could give some comfort to both Milgaard and Miller’s family.

Others leave only wounds.

Guy Paul Morin spent nine years being tried and re-tried for the murder of a neighbour, nine-year-old Christine Jessop.

Although the evidence against Morin was shaky to being with – his time card from work alone suggested he wasn’t around when she vanished – investigators became fixated on him. They famously thought Morin was a “weird-type guy.”

As in so many other cases, DNA evidence would eventually rule out Morin.

But the true killer has never been found.

Sometimes there is no killer.

There are several families in Ontario who have seen double tragedies. First, a child died. Then one of the parents was sent to jail for a murder that never happened.

The notorious pathologist Charles Smith

conducted autopsies that turned up murder where no murder existed.

Fathers and mothers were sent to jail because of deaths that had resulted from freak accidents or medical problems.

The vast majority of serious criminal investigations in Canada do turn up the proper suspect.

Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s a cold case that is only solved years later.

Sometimes there is no solution.

But there are cases where a combination of events – fixated investigators, bad science, or simple chance – can result in an innocent person going to jail for a crime he or she did not commit.

Wrongful convictions damage the system of justice.

We can learn two things from them.

First, that we are all human, and imperfect, and must beware of our own biases as much as possible.

And second, that somewhere in Canada, the innocent are behind bars.

Letters Apology owed on vaccine issue Dear Editor, I am a father of three kids and together with my wife we have decided not to vaccinate our kids.

I will not get into detail about the reasons behind this decision.

I would like only to mention that my wife and I are very well educated – I have a MS degree in engineering and my wife has a BS. I am fluent in three languages, my wife in four.

Making a decision about your kids is not an easy one, neither is driven by impulse.

We, as all of the parents that we know, who have chosen not to vaccinate their kids, had read a good number of articles, scientific researches, publications and books about vaccines, their effect on the human immune system and all their benefits.

Mr. Bob Groeneveld [Malaria, mumps, measles – all best fought with a shot, Jan. 14, TIMES] is calling people like me and my wife “sheep” and “too stupid” in his

column.

I believe that we are neither. I believe that this kind of language is offensive and is stigmatizing our lawful right as citizens of this country to choose.

I will not go further to explain how “mom and dads feel sorry for their kids” after a vaccine has been administered and the kid develops autism, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, sometimes cancer and death.

I will not go further in explaining how the life of my best friend and his family have changed after his older son was diagnosed with autoimmune disease and kidney failure due to vaccine administration.

These facts, unfortunately are not published by papers or reporters, simply because they don’t fit in the propaganda by pharmaceutical companies.

This is just a small evidence for Mr. Groeneveld that I have made my homework.

My wife and I have dug information for years, and still do. And

if the evidence of the safety of the vaccines are shown in a satisfactory manner, we would gladly accept them and change our position. We are open minded people, that don’t just repeat what we are told or paid to say or write.

I believe that Mr. Groeneveld and the editorial team of the newspaper owes us and all the like minded an official apology for the language used in

this article.

I do believe that every parent has the right to make a choice for their kids. Whether this is to vaccinate or not, this is a choice that is driven by the best for the kid.

The choices we make are typically based on information, experience and fear, and they are all different for all of us, thus the different choices.

Vaccines save lives Dear Editor, Fabulous article Bob [Malaria, mumps, measles – all best fought with a shot, Jan. 14, TIMES]. I always enjoyed reading your thoughts, and this one was the best.

“Why don’t you tell them what you really mean” the good thing sometimes about these type of beliefs is it “thins the herd” but in this case their experimenting with the children and the rest of society, i.e. those on chemo etc.

I have always said there are two things that have significantly increased life expectancy during the last 100 years or so: antibiotics and vaccinations.

Now they overdo the antibiotics and eliminate the vaccinations instead of stopping the disease before it gets started.

The request for the street name “was unique in that it was not a letter from a specific individual, but a series of letters that came from the chairs of some of the most active organizations in our community,” said Fred Armstrong, communications manager for the City of Maple Ridge.

“The Haney Rotary Club, the Meadow Ridge Rotary Club, the hospice society, hospital foundation, and the Maple Ridge Community Foundation all provided an endorsement of the idea.

This reflects Bob’s legacy in the community,” he added.

Shantz, affectionately known as Poppa Duck because of the leadership role he played in the annual Rotary

Duck Race, was named Citizen of the Year in 2014 and was a five-time recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow Award from his Meadow Ridge Rotary Club.

He died last summer.

“I received the letter from the mayor the day before Christmas Eve…” said his wife Irena, noting how pleased the family was to learn of the recognition.

“It certainly changed our Christmas from being sad to grateful,” she added.

“What a great legacy Bob has left the family and community.”

The road is well named, Armstrong concluded. “There was two ways to run an event – the wrong way or the ‘Shantz Way’.”

The best way to tell if your pet has gum disease is to lift up the lip and if the teeth are dirty, discoloured, and an ugly brown-greenish colour, there is significant tartar buildup.

Though the Maple Ridge SPCA acknowledges that ticks – or issues around ticks – aren’t overly prevalent in the community, the provincial non-profit society is warning pet owners to check for ticks year around.

Ticks are external parasites that feed off the blood of unlucky hosts, including humans, dogs, and cats.

Often hiking and camping activities are what lead to trips to the

vet for tick problems, explained Dr. Heather Whitehead from Head to Tail Veterinary Hospital.

“It depends on where they’ve been,” she said, adding that although not common, she does treat ticks in Maple Ridge.

If a pet owner suspects a tick has taken a bite of their pet, Whitehead suggested, getting a tick check and “40X Snap Test” done by a vet.

They may have lost all their games, during this weekend’s Air Show, but Rich Goulet, coach of the host Pitt Meadows Marauders senior boys basketball team, said the group “gave everyone a good go for its money.”

A total of 13 teams including Pitt took part this year, and Goulet wasn’t particularly surprised by how things played out.

“I knew this was going to be a tough tourney because of the calibre of the teams this year,” he said.

Judging from the 2016 B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League Entry Draft earlier this month, it’s safe to say Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are home to elite box lacrosse talent.

The first four players chosen in the Jan. 9 BCJALL draft at the Langley Events Centre were products of the Ridge Meadows Minor Lacrosse Association (RMMLA).

In fact, five of the first six picks were Ridge Meadows Burrards, and all of them played in the association’s midget ‘A’ program last year.

RMMLA president Ron Williams said “multiple draft picks are a testament to the quality of kids and coaching in Ridge.”

“However,” he added, “it is also too bad that B.C. Junior Lacrosse will not grant Ridge [Meadows] a junior ‘A’ team, which forces our kids to be dispersed elsewhere.”

Garbage costs increase by cents New tipping fees are now in effect at Maple Ridge’s transfer station.

B.C.’s newly appointed minister of public safety and solicitor general was impressed with what he saw during his tour of Maple Ridge correctional facilities on Jan. 14 Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Mike Morris visited the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre and Alouette Correctional Centre for Women, before continuing into Port Coquitlam to tour the North Fraser Pretrial Centre.

“It went well,” Morris said, regarding his visit to the two Maple Ridge centres. “I was pleased with what I saw. The facilities are excellent. They are dealing with people with behavioural problems and everything was well in hand and well supervised.”

These tours gave him a handle on how the facilities are laid out, Morris said, and how construction and the layout is “built not only for inmates’ safety but for corrections officers’ as well.”

“Both the facilities [in Maple Ridge] I saw today were really modern,” Morris said. “They were well laid out and fully meets the intended purposes of keeping staff in a safe environment, as well as inmates.” > More: mrtimes.com, search ‘solicitor general’

As of this month, it costs a little bit more to get rid of garbage at the Maple Ridge Transfer Station, but officials say the cost to the average local resident is minor.

Disposal amounting to less than one tonne has increased by $3, to $133 per tonne at the local transfer station.

Given that a tonne weighs more than 2,000 pounds, the increased fees translates to mere cents for the average garbage trip.

For garbage trips weighing less than roughly 150 pounds, the minimum tipping fee of $15 will be in effect.

However, if a load weighs more than 150 pounds, expect the $4 additional fee to be added to the per-tonne calculation – a special to the Maple Ridge Transfer Station.

This tipping fee is split between the recycling reserve and capital works reserve, said Trevor Thompson, manager of financial planning for Maple Ridge.

The recycling reserve supports recycling operational costs, such as recycling trucks; and the capital works reserve supports initial purchases and repayment of land, Thompson explained.

“Annually, when we set utility rates we try to estimate what all these costs equate to,” Zanon explained.

Zanon added that the new municipal fee made no changes or impact on fees for single-family homes in the community.

Remaining unchanged, the transfer station will continue to operate on a cash only basis on weekends.

Also still in effect, the transfer station does not accept gypsum, for concerns of asbestos exposure, Valou explained.

“None of our transfer stations are accepting it now.”

Thompson estimated that the additional tipping fee equated to about $65,000 in 2015.

Additional changes for 2016 rates include a new municipal fee of $100 per tonne, in effect for all cities in the Lower Mainland.

The new fee, “is to make sure municipalities are paying the same rate,” said Greg Valou, Communication Officer for Metro Vancouver.

In Pitt Meadows, Waste Management is contracted to offer curbside pick up for homeowners.

Curbside pick up fees, which will be included in the annual tax notice issued in May, will remain at the cost of $253, said Kate Zanon,
