Cavendish renovations get residents riled A dozen members of the neighbourhood show up to support municipal intervention Christine van Reeuwyk Oak Bay News
Oak Bay will put a notice on title on a Cavendish Avenue home after many neighbourhood residents came out to support the move Monday night. “We don’t do this lightly … it is indicative that we need assurances bylaws will be followed,” said Coun. Kevin Murdoch, adding he hopes that “in short order” work is complete and the notice on title can be removed. About a dozen Cavendish residents turned out to make a statement during council Monday, including former councillor John Herbert. They cited fire, health and public safety concerns and a concern about the amount of people coming and going from the home. Oak Bay notified the property owner last spring that permits were needed for renovations underway at “We don’t do this 2518 Cavendish. A building permit application was lightly … it is indicative incomplete and the per- that we need assurances mit application expired bylaws will be followed.” before being issued. Municipal staff told – Coun. Kevin Murdoch council during its meeting Monday night (Jan. 11) that a second application was made that day, and staff learned from WorkSafe the property was cleared to enter without protective gear. A lawyer representing the property owner told council that they too were awaiting clearance from WorkSafe before proceeding. “I think all of the issues are being addressed in the (new) permit,” said Albert Berns. He advocated council not proceed with a notice on title. After clarification from staff on how to remove a notice on title once implemented, council opted to move forward with the notice. “We need to protect the rest of our citizens and residents,” said Coun. Hazel Braithwaite. reporter@oakbaynews.com
