Oak Bay will put a notice on title on a Cavendish Avenue home after many neighbourhood residents came out to support the move Monday night.

About a dozen Cavendish residents turned out to make a statement during council Monday, including former councillor John Herbert. They cited fire, health and public safety concerns and a concern about the amount of people coming and going from the home.

He advocated council not proceed with a notice on title.

After clarification from staff on how to remove a notice on title once implemented, council opted to move forward with the notice.

Oak Bay agreed to write a letter asking the province for action on children’s rights after hearing from the Victoria Family Court and Youth Justice Committee. The committee is charged with being aware of the circumstances of youth and families who may come into contact with the justice system.

Lifelong baseball fans Dave and Darlene Cockle are eager to start baseball season early.

The trip to Safeco Field (and King Dome prior to that) is an annual pilgrimage in the Cockle household (sometimes twice a season) but for the first time, the couple makes a baseball-specific trip past Seattle.

The Royal Oak couple were among the first to purchase tickets to the Victoria HarbourCats new Cactus League Spring Training group tour to Phoenix in March. The tour is organized by the West Coast

Baseball League team and the Flight Centre. It includes return flights to Phoenix, hotel stays, tickets to two pre-season Major League Baseball games, meals and more.

“It’s a great tour for a baseball fan,” said Dave, known to many as the chief of the Oak Bay Fire Department.

“I’ve been to AA minor league games in Myrtle Beach (S.C.) and Indianapolis (Ind.) during other trips and I love the culture. And who better to guide the tour, than former Mariners pitcher Steve Sinclair, he knows the game and the area.”

That “minor league culture” is also what the Cockles enjoy as HarbourCats season ticket holders. The two sit under the cover of the grandstand at Royal Athletic Park, just as they did for the Seals (2008 to 2010), the Royals (2004) and the Capitals (2003). Dave supported baseball in Victo-

Safe community no reason to forget the basics While we enjoy a remarkably safe community in which to live, work and play, it’s important that we not become too complacent.

It’s a message Oak Bay Police Const. Rick Anthony passes along in his discussion coming up Wednesday at Monterey Recreation Centre: prevention is key to personal safety.

“We all too often tend to forget that personal safety is an issue,” Anthony says.

“A lot of people let common sense fade.

We get this comfortable complacency about where we live and what we do. Oak Bay is not in a bubble.”

Precautions include reminding residents to be vigilant for scams, ranging from computerbased identity theft issues to the ever-present “grandparent scam,” in which someone pretends to be a relative in trouble to coax money from a senior.

But other reminders affect us all, regardless of age.

Small safety measures that can make a big difference include simply remembering to lock not only your doors, but also your windows.

The same goes for your car, in addition to not leaving items that might appeal to crooks – items of value, certainly, but also seemingly inconsequential items, like change or phone chargers.

Parking and walking in well-lit areas at night remains good advice, Anthony suggests.

Walking – a popular activity here in Oak Bay – can also be safer with a friend or a group, not to mention more enjoyable for those who feel at all unsafe.

And in this day of texting, messaging and emailing, get outside and meet your neighbours. Not only can you help keep and eye out for unwanted activity on their property, but chances are they’ll return the favour.

Council must get a handle on expenses I read the Mayor’s Looking Ahead in 2016 in the Oak Bay News Jan. 8. He says council’s objectives are to ensure the municipality is well managed but I thought Oak Bay was already well managed when he was elected.

We have basically had the same population for years now so our service levels should have remained constant. Our staff have managed very well in the past and the existing staff salary increases do not account for the big jumps year after year in our property taxes.

So what job responsibilities have council added to improve our management?

The newly created toplevel expensive administrative staff positions are to assist the existing management.

Perhaps the mayor and chief executive offi-

cer needed an executive assistant. Perhaps lots of other additional management ongoing help was also needed but surely the public should have been provided with a detailed account of what changed to warrant such high tax expenditures.

I also notice that if this was not enough, a number of expensive consultants are also to be hired who are also to help us manage better.

It is a documented fact (many studies have shown) that in the past several years the public sector salaries have increased dramatically, all out of proportion, to private sector wages and far above the inflation rate.

Today, on average, public sector wages are 25 to 35 per cent higher than the private sector.

The reality is inflation in B.C. is currently at 1.7

per cent. Council has just approved a provisional increase of almost five per cent, about the same as last year. This year’s increase of course is compounded onto last year’s increase, so do the math.

In case council has not noticed, the Canadian economy is not doing all that well and we are carrying a lot of personal debt.

There are many other undefined costs on the horizon locally and in the CRD. This also will impact our taxes substantially. There must be a moratorium on any new staff and consultant increases until council can get a handle on our taxes.

We cannot keep up these ludicrous high management costs along with everything else or in a few years we will be in the same financial situation that Greece is in.

Another huge concern

of mine is what percent of our property taxes goes for the pensions of retired staff.

There are cities in North America that have had to file bankruptcy due to unfounded liability of their pension plans.

Now that the tar sands in Alberta are in trouble, I hope that the various government agencies responsible have enough control over the entire debacle to make sure that the major players don’t up and leave their mess behind like so many others before them.

Dodge Charger is a modern four-door muscle car It’s about 40 years since I drove a Dodge Charger, a 1969 version of the legendary muscle car.

The choices for my illicit spin around my hometown in the north of England, was a Pontiac Trans Am, Chevy sedan (forgotten which model) and the aforementioned Charger.

Illicit not because I was joyriding but because I wasn’t insured to drive these American monsters, owned by my bosses at the local plumbing supplies company.

Not sure why I chose the Dodge, possibly because I was a TV cowboy fan and

Dodge City was, of course, the centre of all gun play.

How fortuitous because it would provide me with a point of reference for when recently I climbed aboard the latest version of the Charger, which draws its design inspiration from that earlier model.

Just kidding.

I don’t remember much about my 15-minute turn at the wheel of that alien left-hand drive power machine. I recall that it went like stink, I liked the roar and the auto transmission – my first – was sensational. Perhaps that’s all I needed to recall

because those performance attributes were what fascinated muscle car fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

The new Charger looks are truly reminiscent of the cars that bore the same back in the late 60s and the variety of engines now on offer can deliver the same thrill, more so given the technological advances.

Nostalgia alone is not enough to justify creating such contemporary re-recreations of icons of a bygone era. Today’s muscle machines have to perform as everyday cars and contain the same creature comforts we now expect in a family sedan and

the 2016 Charger (available in nine trims, delivers in spades).

Let’s open the driver-side door of this coupe-like four-door sedan, which first returned in 2005 after a 19-year absence from dealerships.

Since that celebrated revival it has been fine-tuned in every sense of the word. If the earlier re-iterations of this new generation were somewhat spartan inside, that cannot be said now.

The SXT test car featured the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen media center with Uconnect Access system (optional on base trims), very much a 21st century luxury. As is the available BeatsAudio system, with its 552-watt amplifier and trunk-mounted subwoofer, which blasted me with the mid-60s sounds of Jefferson Airplane during my freeway ride.

A total of 160 players battled last weekend with 30 teams in the Mixed Doubles event of the Tennis Classic at Oak Bay Rec. “It was nice to see the up-and-coming juniors play against the adults. However, it looks like experience this year overcame the youth as we did not have any juniors represented in the finals,” said Simon Vickers, tennis program supervisor at Recreation Oak Bay. In the finals Sunday the team of Johane

Mui and Jared Tyan Fran Martin defeated Karen Clarke and Shawn Lusignan 6-4, 6-0 in the A Event. In the B Event Carolyn Goff and Geoff Bourne beat Mike Nichol and Josee Paris 6-1,6-2; Martha O’Brian and Gabor Sakany won over Lillan Lamb and John Handy 6-0, 6-1 to take the C Event.

“The highlight for me was that each match, each division, it was competitive,” Vickers said. “Once everyone was in their level it became very entertaining because the match play was very level.”

The Junior Classic was held Dec. 28 to 30. The winners were: Jacob Adam Ismail

“It’s a great facility with friendly people. I would like to thank the family members and friends that came out to support the players during the matches.”
