S+L Offers A Twist On The Traditional Thursday, January 14, 2016 (Langley) – In the coming weeks Langley will see the doors open on a new restaurant that may change the way steak houses are viewed. S+L Kitchen & Bar is not your grandparents’ steak house (although they’ll love it too). It is however, in the words of Joseph Richard Group’s CEO, Ryan Moreno, a twist on the traditional.

“I’m excited to open the doors. We have been working on this concept for a few years now and it has always been our goal to expand on our current model.”

Moreno said the chance to open the first S+L in Langley, where he grew up, makes it that much more exciting.

Joseph Richard Group currently has the doors open on fifteen locations throughout British Columbia and Alberta, with S+L Langley being the sixteenth. Years in the making, it’s development has been waiting in the wings for the perfect time to launch. When the opportunity came to bring in a new Corporate Chef to work with the team and design a unique menu, the match was made.

“I’ve known Dave (David Jorge, Season 2 winner of Masterchef Canada) for years,” Moreno explained, “we have been talking about working together for some time so when the Joseph Richard Group developed the S+L concept, Dave had some killer ideas that we thought would work extremely well. Once we solidified the partnership, Dave and Andy (Andy Slinn, JRG Executive Chef) started work on the S+L menu and the results are truly incredible.”

This will be Jorge’s first step into restaurant operation. He has a successful family business, Avante Concrete (where the moniker the Concrete Chef comes from) that he, his father and his brother run, but cooking has always been his passion.

“This menu is my interpretation of what a steakhouse should be” continued Jorge, “approachable, more current, somewhere where mom and dad can take the kids and everyone has a meal they will enjoy but at a price point that is just as palatable as the food itself.”

While the menu has what most would consider traditional items for this style of restaurant, the signature JRG style is what really makes S+L stand out. One of these subtle twists is the availability of Wagyu steak. Wagyu steak is extremely rare in the Lower Mainland and even rarer at the price points that will be

enjoyed at S+L. “Typically Wagyu is found at the highest of high end fine dining spots because of it’s extraordinary flavour that can’t be found in other cuts” Jorge noted.

“Wagyu steak is raised better and is internationally recognized as a premiere steak, one that is hard to find in Vancouver. It is much more tender and juicier which translates into an exciting flavour that can’t be found in other cuts,” Jorge noted that while everyone may not be familiar with Wagyu, taste is an experience not to be missed.

In addition to the various cuts of steak (there are traditional New York Strip, Top Sirloin and Prime Rib as well), guests will find some other favourites on the menu such as the Master Chicken (Jorge’s Masterchef Canada winning fried chicken plate), the Sablefish (the plate that landed Jorge the spot on the show), and some great ‘Handhelds’ as well like ‘The Frank’ which features the restaurant’s signature lobster and prawn meat patty. As a company, Joseph Richard Group has always strived to provide guests with provide guests with exceptional product and excellent value, S+L will be no different.

The menu also boasts slick sides that take any entrée to the next level. Add some Bourbon Bacon Corn, Mac & Cheese Sticks, or an old school favourite like Brussels Sprouts to any dish (to name a few).

“S+L will be a place you can make your regular ‘spot’ or the place you go for special occasions” Jorge continued, “it really is different that way. Casual meal or special occasion, it shouldn’t matter – it’s there for everyone.”

Beyond the food, a big part of what will make this new restaurant different is the overall dining experience. Where else can you go and get a Sozzle Cart (a cart that roams the room with a personal bartender mixing up premium craft cocktails at your table), a ‘Cut Above Knife Club’ (where you can have your own personally inscripted knife for use), and the Sip or Spit Program (where if the wine isn’t tasting up to par, you send it back at no cost).

Brookswood and Fernridge may go their separate ways as Langley Township voted in favour of a plan that could split the neighbourhood in two.

On Monday afternoon, council voted to look at splitting the development area designated as Brookswood-Fernridge.

“As we’ve heard, there is no clear line between Brookswood and Fernridge,” said Mayor Jack Froese as he proposed the idea.

The new plan is an attempt to start fresh after the massive community uproar sparked by the last attempt at creating a new Brookswood-Fernridge Official Community Plan.

That plan was defeated and the council voted to essentially start over, using the comments and information gathered as a base. The Township also spent a year working on a new engagement process to communicate with residents.

Council has asked Township staff to come back with a report and map of the divided Brookswood and Fernridge at a future meeting. The area hasn’t yet been formally divided and no boundaries are set in stone.

The new plan will essentially leave Brookswood alone while the Township concentrates on updating development plans for the southern parts of the community.

Brookswood is the northern part of the area, reaching roughly from the Langley City border in the north down to around 33A or 36th Avenue in the south. Fernridge runs down as far as 20th or 16th Avenue.

The main difference between the two areas is the level of development.

Brookswood is mostly lots of about one-quarter acre, while Fernridge is mainly acreages and some farms.

Splitting the areas makes sense, Froese said.

“That really is where the planning needs to take place, anyway,” he said of Fernridge.

Some of the people who were

active in opposing the last OCP are not happy with the plan.

“I think it’s an overly simplistic move,” said Jackie Mandzak, a former council candidate from Brookswood.

“It’s not fair to both sides,” said Ken Grainger, who said he believed many residents will object to the split.

Several landowners in the Fernridge area were open to the idea, however. A group of them spoke to Township council Monday.

“This area has been designated for urban uses for almost half a century,” said Cameron Gair of Solo Project Management. He represented a number of landowners during the last OCP process.

The rough plan council endorsed would be an update to the current plan, but would not increase density as sharply as the plan which failed in 2014.

There would be fewer condos and townhouses and more areas designated for 10,000 square foot lots. The update is expected to take 12 to 18 months and cost about $150,000.

No one was injured when a twin-engined plane made a hard landing at the Langley Regional Airport Saturday night.

The Piper Aztec, flown by a Vancouver pilot and returning from Calgary, came in early Saturday evening, around 7 p.m., said airport manager Guy Miller.

The Aztec’s front landing gear collapsed, the result of

an apparent mechanical failure, Miller said.

That tipped the nose down and the propellers and engines suffered some major damage when they hit the runway.

There were four people on board at the time, none of them hurt in the rough landing. An investigation of the exact cause of the incident is still underway.

Langley Township firefighters, along with RCMP and BC Ambulance crews, attended the scene with airport staff. Miller said that the crash scene was cleared and the runway re-opened between 9 and 10 p.m.

Woman died in fall from party bus

Emergency crews checked out the plane after it crunched into the tarmac while landing on Saturday night.

The BC Coroners Service has identified a woman who died in a fall from a party bus in Vancouver as Langley’s Chelsea Lynn Mist James, 23.

James fell from an open door while the vehicle was making a turn onto Burrard Street from West Hastings. She was then hit by the vehicle, which was operated by Silver Lady Limousine of Burnaby.

The incident is the latest linked to party buses, which include injuries, crashes, and open alcohol on the moving vehicles.

In a 2012 incident in Brookswood, occupants of two party buses spilled out and started a fight near 200th Street and 40th Avenue. Rules on party buses were tightened in 2014.

Police are looking for two suspects after the incident.

A 32-year-old Langley man was taken to hospital with knife wounds Saturday night after being attacked in his apartment.

Langley RCMP said that sometime around 7 p.m. on Jan. 9, the victim let two individuals into his apartment in the 20100 block of 56th Avenue.

They attempted to rob him and attacked him, and the victim suffered lacerations during the assault.

“They came in with the intention of robbing certain items,” said Cpl. Holly Largy, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. When they didn’t find what they were looking for, they took a cellphone and other small items and left.

Police have identified two possible suspects but as of Monday morning no arrests had been made.

The victim’s injuries are not life threatening, Largy said.

Herd gets into fight with malaria

B

A British vaccine for malaria has received approval in Europe.

The World Health Organization is checking it out, with distribution to malaria-infested regions expected to begin in 2017.

The whole thing flies directly in the face of anti-vaxxers’ quest to protect the rights of deadly diseases to run roughshod over humanity.

If the malaria vaccine is half as effective as its predecessors which wiped out smallpox and has come close to doing the same for polio, it could save hundreds of thousands of lives – mostly children – every year.

It will be a public relations nightmare for those who have dedicated their children’s lives to the re-establishment of deadly diseases in places where they were once considered eradicated.

Measles, mumps, and other child killers are making a comeback in places like North America, thanks to the “educated” ignorance engendered by the anti-vaccination movement.

Yet another successful vaccination program in the news could prove to be a major setback for anti-vaxxer charlatans and their sheep.

he fact that the provincial government is not supporting the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is fairly surprising. As they say in their own announcement, the Liberal government supports the oil and gas industry in general.

It’s nice to see that the government’s support is not unconditional.

In this case, parent company Kinder Morgan seems to have decided that they could just assure provinces and municipalities that all would be well, and still get a thumbs up. Repeatedly, the province has asked questions about how any possible spills might be dealt with. Repeatedly, according to the provincial report, Kinder Morgan has failed to provide detailed answers.

This is not a minor issue. The province has a responsibility to watch over the hundreds of rivers and streams – including the Fraser – and of the ocean that the pipeline crosses or skirts. Here in the Lower Mainland, the Trans Mountain pipeline runs through valuable farmland, across salmon-bearing streams, and through densely-populated suburbs.

Yet when Kinder Morgan did send information to the province, it was “heavily redacted,” according to the province.

This means that what information was in there about spill prevention and response was partially blacked out.

This isn’t the first time Kinder Morgan has been accused of not providing information to governments of its plans.

Langley Township has also complained about questions to the oil pipeline firm going unanswered.

There seems to be no explanation for why Kinder Morgan couldn’t share the complete details of its emergency plans with the provincial government. Whatever their reason, they seem to have shot their cause in the foot. With the province withholding its yes, Kinder Morgan will be heading into the National Energy Board’s hearings with one of the most important players on the opposing side.

Kinder Morgan needs to take seriously the demands of governments – and the general public – for detailed information about emergency procedures. Anything less is an insult to our intelligence.

Oregon about freedom Dear Editor, This letter is in response to Mr. Claxton’s editorial “Militia fantasy is a cowboy dream.”

Mr. Claxton in his continual hatred of free individuals has neglected the real issue of the events in Oregon.

That is that Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond are having five years of their lives stolen from them for the crime of ranching. That is working the land to raise cattle and contributing to society.

For the benefit of unaware city folk, controlled burning is a part of land management.

Controlled burning is carried out by gov-

ernment agencies and private land owners on a regular basis and sometimes fires do get out of control. Even the judge on the case stated that the punishment was unfair.

In regards to the armed protesters, there is a group of highly organized, heavily armed law breakers called the US federal government. For months they ignored the petitions of the people they work for (American citizens) and yes, they did petition.

The Feds are now facing a group of citizens who are exercising their rights as laid out in their Declaration of Independence and con-

stitution, the highest law in their land.

Back to the point: Mr. Claxton, if you were imprisoned for the act of journalism which our government did not approve of, something that happens all over the world, would you want your peers to come to your aid?

Standoff about bullying Dear Editor Re: Advance Opinion, Painful Truth, Militia fantasy is a cowboy dream.

Advance reporter Mathew Claxton gets into a conspiracy rant of his own, paints the protesters as redneck goons... “self styled militiamen ie. heavily armed anti-government wackos” but the real underlying story has interesting issues of government overreach.

The defiant actors in this case may sound like they are getting instructions from “Jeff Foxworthy” or “Larry the Cable Guy” but it actually tells a story resembling many old western movies where corrupt authority was challenged.

The US federal government owns a huge part of the land in the west-

ern states; 53 per cent in Oregon; 67 per cent of Utah; 81 per cent of Nevada, etc.

In B.C. 94 per cent of the land is provincial Crown land which is managed by many government ministries and agencies.

Crown lands are put to many uses and leased to private entrepreneurs, agriculture, forestry, industrial, commercial, tourism, energy production, etc.

There is a historical clash over the use and occupation of these US federal lands, including complicated native and ancestral claims and inherited rights.

The land is managed by many government agencies including the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife, Parks, etc.

Traditionally, the government leased lands to private interests for agriculture/ranching, forestry, mining etc.

The environmental lobby is President Obama’s largest support group and has a lot of influence during his reign in power (ie.

Keystone XL Pipeline rejection).

The farmer/ranchers as land stewardship traditionally do what’s called “prescribed burns” or “backfires” on rangeland to control invasive species, in this case juniper.

This multi-faceted story has all the ingredients for a great western movie.

Dear Editor, I must admit when I lived in the Township of Langley, I was not a great fan of Dave Hall.

But when I moved to Langley City, my opinion changed.

I found out that Councillor Hall was someone who really cared about his community and the people who lived there.

I got to know him a bit better when he showed up year after year as a community volunteer with the local Terry Fox Run. He arrived without fanfare and never asked for acknowledgement or recognition.

Though I do not live in Langley City any longer and my opinion may be moot, I think it would be a nice gesture on behalf of the current mayor and council to consider naming one of the meeting rooms in the brand new Timms Community Centre in honour of Councillor Hall.

He fought long and hard for this beautiful recreation centre that will serve both the citizens of Langley City and Langley Township.

Hundreds expected to mourn fallen firefighter rhooper@langleyadvnace.com

A rusty old, discarded fire truck that – as a child – he found buried in mud in a farmer’s field in north Surrey, will now ceremoniously carry Randy Piticco to his final resting place later this month.

In a full honours funeral service, the 61-year-old retired Surrey fire captain will be laid to rest on Sunday, Jan. 24, with a celebration of life being held at Surrey’s Bell Centre, starting at about 3 p.m.

Piticco was a Walnut Grove

resident who garnered some media attention last fall, in part due to a series of kind gestures by some of his former colleagues, his friends and family, and even many complete strangers to show their thanks for all he’s done – both professionally and personally.

Piticco died Dec. 22, after being unwell for more than a year.

CT scans discovered cancerous growths on his spine, as well as in his bones and lungs in July.

His particular form of cancer is one of 10 recognized in the industry as a hazard to firefighters,

and consequently – even though Piticco was retired – his passing is classified as a line-of-duty death, explained Mike McNamara, president of the Surrey Firefighters Association and a long-time friend and coworker.

One of McNamara’s favourite stories about Piticco involved the recovery of that old fire truck, a 1919 LaFrance, which the Piticcos (Randy and his father Lido – also a Surrey firefighter in his day) convinced that farmer to donate to the firehall all those years ago.

“He’s going to get one last ride in a fire truck, on the LaFrance,” McNamara said with a smile.

Upwards of 900 people are expected to attend Piticco’s service, which starts promptly at 4 p.m. But family arrives about 3:15, and there will be a ceremonial firefighters march with an honour guard including pipes and drums, before the official service.

Lottie Wilkins, has grown tired of her marriage to Mellersh Wilkins.

Instead of putting up with another dreary spring with him in London, she and a girlfriend decide to spend April in a castle in Italy.

To help save on costs, they invite two other women on this journey of self-discovery, and so the story of Enchanted April unfolds. It sounds like a completely modern dilemma, but the story is set in the 1920s.

Local actor Dann Wilhelm takes on the role of Mellersh in the performance put on by the Langley Players from Jan. 21 to Feb 20.

“I am one of the husbands, Mellersh,” Wilhelm said.

“He’s a family solicitor, so he’s very much business minded. He likes his routine. He’s very old school... it very much reveals how Charlotte [Lottie] is unhappy.”

Wilhelm has won two Community Theatre Coalition awards, both for best leading actor in a musical for his 2003 performance in The Pirates of Penzance and his 2004 performance in The Gondoliers.

“The script is so well written, I don’t feel like I’m acting,” said Wilhelm of his role. “Except putting on an accent.”

He has been acting for about 25 years and jumped at the oppor-

tunity when the director, Marko Hohlbein, and producers asked him to join the cast of Enchanted April.

There are eight cast members, which is relatively large for a small theatre production.

“The dressing room is a bit crowded... but it’s nice,” Wilhelm noted. “I don’t think there’s any scene where all eight of us are on stage at the same time. It’s a different dynamic with a larger group.

Celebration pays homage to Scotland’s best-known bard

andy Lucas admits she wasn’t all that familiar with Scottish culture – until last year, that is.

That’s when the director of recreation with the Langley Senior Resources Society was tasked with organizing the “Nicht Wi’ Burns” at the Langley Seniors Resources Centre.

To prepare for last January’s event, Lucas did some research on the famous poet and lyricist Robbie Burns, and the land he called home.

“I’m not Scottish at all and, in fact, last year was the first Robbie Burns event I ever put on, so it was very entertaining and educational as well, for myself and for new members,” Lucas said. “I had done many events but not a Robbie Burns event, so I did quite a bit of homework and I also built on the tradition of what the seniors centre had done years prior.”

Next Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the seniors centre, she’s once again helping to put together a celebration in honour of Burns, Scotland’s best-loved bard who was born Jan. 25, 1759 and died July 21, 1796.

This year’s soirée featuring tradition, poetry, pipes of the bag variety, food, and friendship is especially for the Scottish and for the Scottishat-heart.

Joe MacDonald will be on hand to pipe in the haggis and lead the festivities.

The “Bill O Fare” features roast beef and, of course, haggis, and will be accompanied by neeps and tatties (more commonly known as turnips and potatoes). Trifle rounds off this traditional Scottish meal. he event starts with a social hour from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and continues with a dinner and celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Cost (including GST) is $30 each for recreation members and $40 for non-members.

“It was great; it was fun,” Lucas said, about last year’s “Nicht.”

“Because it was my first one I actually did look at how we can make this one better, and so we brought in dancers this year, so we’re really excited.”

The Shot of Scotch Dancers will bring a new wrinkle to the celebration.

Lucas had approached MacDonald, looking for suggestions about how to bring festivities “up a notch.”

“He actually works with the dancers who we will be bringing in,” Lucas said. he Langley Seniors Resource Centre is not the only place in Langley where you can celebrate Robbie Burns next week.

The new album of local country music performers Robyn and Ryleigh launches tonight (Thursday Jan. 14) at Gabby’s and the Gillespie sisters are more than a little excited about sharing the album called By Heart with their fans.

“We have some really cool songs that we’re super proud of on this album,” the

girls said in an email to the Langley Advance.

The popular duo is often seen around Langley performing at local events or even being filmed for a scene for a TV movie. In December they were part of Appetite for Love which will air on Feb. 6 and features two of

the pair’s songs.

“We’ve got some local summer gigs that we will be posting soon on our webpage,” they noted. “We will announce them all at once when everything comes together.”

One might think having a sister as a business partner

would be too much togetherness, but apparently not for this duo.

“We are incredibly lucky to have each other to go through this with, to grow and learn along the way together,” they said. “We also have an amazing team and family that helps us in so many ways.”

There is no sitting back and reflecting for these girls, who already have ideas in action for the next album.

Obviously the launch is their biggest current news and they promise there will be albums available for purchase while fans take in the live performance showcase of new songs. Doors for the show open at 8 p.m.

The work of Haydn and Brahms includes love songs, according to Eugene Skovorodnikov, the Ukrainian-born pianist who is also

a master class teacher at UBC. He will bring this music of love to Langley in the Langley Community Musics School’s (LCMS) Cafe Classico concert on Sunday, Jan. 17 at Rose Gellert Hall.

Skovorodnikov said he is looking forward to the performance, and added that Brahms’ music is of “great depth, profound emotions, highest level of sensitivity, and mystery. Probably one of the best

examples of music conveying a message of love.”

Skovorodnikov will perform well-known pieces from Haydn such as Variations in F minor and from Brahms, Sonata No. 3.

Sunday’s concert begins at 2:30 p.m. with the pre-concert discussion, break for coffee and refreshments and the concerts at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the Rose Gellert Hall box office at 604-534-2848.

A new and different kind of civic facility is coming to Langley.

Together with Langley City Hall and the City of Langley branch of the Fraser Valley Regional Library the corner of 203rd Street and Douglas Crescent will welcome the brand new Timms Community Centre, expected to open to the public on Feb 24.

On an exclusive tour of the construction site, staff from the Langley Advance saw how the new Timms is taking shape and how inviting it will be. One of those providing information on the tour was chief administrative officer Francis Cheung.

There’s plenty of West Coast attitude in the building. Broad expanses of windows deliver natural light while engineered wood finishes, ample places to sit, and a living green wall keep things friendly and welcoming.

Entrances off Douglas and the rear parking area facing Fraser Highway will provide primary access for Timms, City Hall, and the library. One shared reception desk will help guide visitors.

If a visit to the gymnasium is on the schedule, be sure to look up. On the second level, the gym is ringed by a four lane walking and run-

ning track.

Look for expanded programming in the multi-purpose rooms.

Two have sprung wood floors ideal for dance and exercise classes.

There will also be an outdoor rubberized area to allow for a range of uses.

“People can play ball hockey or badminton or we can set up yoga,” Cheung said.

Groups looking for kitchen facilities will find what they need with a double galley kitchen in one of the multi-purpose rooms.

“There may be the ability to host community dinners,” added Cheung.

As a LEED Silverequivalent building, the new Timms Community Centre has the features that ensure energy conservation at a LEED Silver status without the price tag of certification.

“It’s not necessary to actually be certified,” Cheung said. “We chose to save that money.”

Visitors can see the efficiency of the building on a specialized monitor which displays data and charts based on system usage.

Tourism Langley is taking its promotional show on the road.

Its mobile visitor services vehicle made its first appearance Dec. 12 in the Aldergrove Christmas parade.

“Ask Langley To-Go” is a mobile information unit that

has started travelling the Lower Mainland and will be stationed at events, high visitor traffic areas, and anywhere else in the community that it is needed to welcome and meet visitors and locals who want to know more about Langley and its attractions.

The three-tiered concept was first introduced at Tourism Langley’s AGM earlier this year, when plans were presented to implement what Tourism

Langley describes as “a new, refreshed and innovative visitor servicing model that would be more effective in meeting the demands and expectations of today’s visitor.”

The transition included bringing in methods to serve visitors via the digital space, investing in a new website, and the recently added, on-the-ground visitor servicing vehicle.

The mobile visitor information vehicle will be manned

by informed Tourism Langley ambassadors and will be well equipped with brochures, maps, and other pertinent information about the local area as well as the region and province. Whenever possible, the vehicle will be complimented by a “chill out area” and offer free Wi-Fi to all visitors.

The data is also misused to rank schools, which puts pressure on teachers to teach to the test, instead of to students’ interests and needs.

As far as I know, the Eastern Filbert Blight only affects European type hazel trees. The native North American hazels are resistant and some seem to be immune.

Halfway into the first month of the year, some folks are still scrambling to find a wall calendar they can hang in their home or office, and the Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) can help out with that.

For the second year running, they’ve put together a limited number of LAPS calendars (150 to be exact) that display a series of Furry Tail Endings – pictures and success stories about animals from the shelter that were adopted to forever homes.

There are still a dozen or so calendars left at the Patti Dale Animal Shelter, explained LAPS executive director Sean Baker.

He noted they retail for $20 each, $15 of which goes back to the shelter to “improve the daily lives of all of our furry residents.”

One such former shelter resident, profiled in the 2016 calendar, is Burger.

She was a 10-week-old tabby found in Aldergrove. When she was discovered, she was suffering from a “roaring” infection and one of her eyes was so damaged that it had to be surgically removed.

Langley Animal Protection Society is selling Furry Tail Ending calendars like the one displayed by senior animal control officer Jenny Ramirez.

Well, that was more than two years ago now, and Burger – who was only in the shelter for about a month before she was adopted – is one of animals featured in the calendar.

“People connect with these unique cases, they always find homes. The one-eyed cats, the three-legged dogs…” Baker said. “In Burger’s case, she’s doing really well… She’s thriving, it’s fair to say.”

She was adopted by a Walnut Grove family who came in.

They weren’t even looking for a cat, Baker explained.

“They couldn’t resist her… the rest, as they say, is a Furry Tail Ending” the likes of which are featured in the calendar.

Foster folks needed Every year when the weather starts to warm up outside, LAPS is inundated with kittens.

“Whether that be older kittens, nursing or pregnant moms, or orphan bottle feeders, we see them all,” Baker said.

They have some foster homes that are ready at a moment’s notice to help out, but they are always looking for more volunteers to add to the roster.

by Vikes For the second night in a row, Trinity Western’s men’s hockey team lost to Victoria on the road, falling 6-4 Saturday at the Ian Stewart Complex.

Just like Friday’s game, the Vikes scored the first two goals and never trailed the rest of the way. The Spartans (7-4-0-1) evened the game 3-3 midway through the second period, but Victoria (5-7-0-1) scored late in the middle frame to take the lead for good.

The Langley Rivermen are sharing space at the Langley Events Centre with high-profile fellow tenants.

The start of the new year signals the return of the National Lacrosse League’s Vancouver Stealth, who play their home games at the LEC. The Stealth play at the LEC’s Arena Bowl on Saturday nights (upcoming home dates are Jan. 23, Feb. 6 and 20, March 5 and 19, and April 2, 16, and 23).

Sharing digs with the pro lacrosse team is nothing new to Langley’s junior A hockey club, led by head coach Bobby Henderson.

After all, this is something the Rivermen and Stealth have been doing since the Stealth debuted at the LEC in January 2014.

Since day one, Henderson hasn’t been concerned about the Stealth hogging the sports spotlight.

“They are two different demographics,” the Rivermen’s bench boss said, adding there are a few “cross-over fans” who follow both junior A hockey and pro lacrosse in town.

Henderson noted that in terms of attendance numbers over the past few seasons, the Rivermen have been “pretty consistent

Stealth president and general manager Doug Locker believes the two teams complement each other, adding, “I don’t think it impacts either of us negatively whatsoever.”

Locker added, “the price points for both [pro lacrosse and junior A hockey] tickets are relatively inexpensive. I don’t view it as being an issue in the slightest, to be honest.”

Having high level lacrosse and hockey in the community adds even more entertainment options in Langley, Locker noted.

“I look at it as a real positive thing,” Locker said.

“When I’m in town and a Rivermen game is on, I’m going

to the game. I enjoy watching [junior hockey] and I have an appreciation for what those guys are doing.”

This Saturday, Jan. 16, the Rivermen will host the Nanaimo Clippers at the LEC. Opening puck drop is 6 p.m.

It will be the second of backto-back games for the ’Men, who will look to snap a threegame losing skid Friday when they visit Coquitlam to play the Express.

Rough weekend The Rivermen came up empty last weekend, losing 5-2 versus Cowichan Valley on Saturday and 5-0 in Victoria on Sunday.

“It didn’t go well,” Henderson said.

“We were up 2-0 on Cowichan and then the wheels fell off, and that was pretty much the theme of the weekend.”

Versus Cowichan Valley, the Rivermen jumped ahead by two late in the first period on goals from Zachary Bleuler and Justin Szeto. But that was all the offence they could muster for the rest of the weekend.

The Capitals stormed back to tie the game before the period was through (including their first marker of the night, scored eight seconds after Szeto made it 2-0 for the Rivermen), before adding two goals in the second frame and one more in the third to win by a three-goal margin.

The next day in Victoria, the Grizzlies blanked the ’Men 5-0.

The Rivermen remain third in the BCHL’s six-team Mainland Division with a 22-17-0-1 record.

Disc golfers spin Frisbees across Langley course The fast-growing sport took over a local course.

It’s golf, but without drivers, putters, wedges, or even golf balls.

Disc golf came to Langley for a competition held on the weekend at Tall Timbers Golf Course. Played with a Frisbee, or flying disc, the game has been growing in popularity across North America.

As in standard golf, players have to play their shots from where they lie – which

in some cases on Saturday meant players tossing discs from under low-hanging tree branches or while standing in cold puddles off to the sides of the greens.

Last weekend’s events drew 72 players on Saturday for the amateur field and 40 on Sunday for a pro game, said organizer Eric Vachon. There are a lot of reasons why the game is becoming more popular, he said.

“Cost is obviously one of them,” said Vachon. “It’s a very cheap game to play.”

Usually there are no green fees, and the equipment is cheaper than traditional golf.

Anyone from seniors to children can take part.

“It’s just an easy game to learn, a good walk outside,” said Vachon.

Langley resident Matt Mattson, who sings Gord Downie’s lyrics in The Hip Show, skated with fellow beer-league players in an outdoor game that was part of the NHL’s Bridgestone Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

As contest winners, Mattson was there with three of his teammates from the Sociable Weavers squad that plays in the Adult Safe Hockey League (ASHL) out of Langley Twin Rinks.

The Langley Eagles soared in the final of a bantam hockey tournament in Chilliwack last weekend – and at the same time managed to keep the Chilliwack C3 Seahawks grounded.

In a battle of teams sporting 5-0 weekend records, the Eagles skated to a 5-2 win over the Seahawks in the C Division’s title game of the Paul Brenner Memorial Bantam Tournament, held Jan. 8 to 10.

With the win, the Eagles finished first among the 12 teams in the division.

In the third frame, Trevor Young scored the tournament winning goal with the assist going to linemate Nicholas Cormack, who also had two goals in the final.

The win capped a perfect weekend for the C3 Eagles, who posted a perfect 6-0 mark to earn their second tournament victory of the year.

Eagles coach Clark Kemp was happy with his team’s play throughout the weekend.

“It took a great effort to win every game, with contributions coming from all players on the team,” Kemp said.

In their opener Jan. 8, Langley faced the Chilliwack C2 Bruins, Chilliwack’s top bantam C team during the regular season.

The Langley Eagles bantam C3 hockey team added more gold to their collection last weekend after they took top spot in the C Division at the Paul Brenner Memorial Bantam Tournament in Chilliwack.

Eric Nordal finished with three assists while game MVP (and defenceman) Owen Kredba battled large Kamloops forwards.

In their second game on Saturday, Langley beat the Chilliwack C1 Knights 9-2.

Greg Song scored twice while game MVP Owen Kemp had a strong game on defence.

The Eagles’ fifth game, played Sunday morning, was against Aldergrove C1.

Forward Joseph Deley and defenceman Matt BardellPolley both scored for Langley in a 7-2 Eagles win.

Game MVP was forward Josh Moreau who “had lots of hustle playing on the wing,” Lars Nordal said.

Kemp said he feels “very fortunate to have such unselfish players.”

“This team never gives up, and seems to play their best against the top skilled teams,” he added.

Langley’s first two goals and paced Langley to a 3-1 lead after one period.

Defenceman Brady Lumsden added a goal as Langley pulled away in the final two periods to win 10-1.

“Game MVP for Langley was forward Josh Laird who showed lots of hustle the entire game,” said Eagles manager Lars Nordal.

Also Friday, the Eagles skated to a 6-2 win over a strong Chilliwack C5 Spartans squad.

Colten Kenney paced Langley with four goals.

Just like the first game, goalie Matthew Reeves made some great saves for Langley in the first period to keep the score close.

Making smart plays, Carson Yee earned the MVP award for Langley.

Langley opened Saturday’s action with a 10-5 win over Kamloops.

- Hughie Patrick Boyle It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Hughie Boyle on Nov. 30, 2015.

Hughie was born on Dec. 21, 1946 in Montreal, QC, but lived most of his life in Surrey, B.C. with his now deceased brother, Phil. He leaves behind the mother of his son & close friend Brenda, his son Munro and many relatives as well as close friends. Hughie, fondly known as West Coast Hughie or The Hughster, had a booming laugh and a presence that at times seemed larger than life.

OBITUARIES

Darnel, Dorothy Barbara (Nee Myott) November 30, 1916 - December 15, 2015 Dorothy passed away peacefully at age 99 in Langley, BC. She was born in Laverna, Saskatchewan and raised in East Vancouver, where she lived most of her life.

She is survived by her only son Wayne, daughter-in-law Barbara, grandson, Jason (Terrie) and great grandson Grady and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Myrtle Sadler.

As a young mother she started a playgroup programme for pre-school children before “Kindergarten” became the norm and in mid-life was very active with Toastmasters and hobby weaving at home. Upon retirement she excelled at her long-life passion of ballroom dancing.

At age 80 she was the victim of a brutal home invasion that almost cost her life but did lose an eye as a result. Not to be daunted, she later delivered a speech at a Safety Forum to the New Westminster Seniors about the importance of being safe and reminded them of safety measures to implement.

Special thanks go to her two care workers, Barb Davies and Helga Petersen.

She will be deeply missed by her son and family and will have a private memorial.
