Health officials continue to battle rising opioid use Canadian cyclist Chris Cull shares his experience of escaping addiction

ith opioid use in Alberta becoming increasingly more popular, opioid overdose prevention kits were released to the public last year through Alberta Health Services. Agencies such as Turning Point (formerly known as the Central Alberta Aids Network Society or CAANS) have taken on a large role in helping to distribute these overdose prevention kits.

Currently, the kits are being rolled out into rural communities to address the growing need to deal with the issue.

Jennifer Vanderschaeghe of Turning Point said they are hoping smaller rural communities can be reached through larger, nearby communities such as Stettler, Drayton Valley, Wetaskiwin, Maskwacis and Lloyminster. The kits are known as Naloxone or NarCan kits and come from Alberta Health Services.

“We really just want to reach more people - certainly people in Red Deer, but those outside of the City as well. We want to reach people in other cities, but also in the rural towns and villages.

“Anybody who feels like they are at risk for an opioid overdose can access a kit,” Vanderschaeghe said.

The kits come with two doses of Naloxone so that a person can use one or both, depending on the amount of opioids taken and the distance of the user from medical help. Since the Central Alberta program launch in July, 135 kits have been given out and 33 lives have been saved with 32 kits.

Chris Cull said he hopes his story of overcoming the addiction can help others to understand that they can move past it and onto better things for themselves.

Cull overcame his addiction to opioids after seven years of use and is now using his experience to explore the epidemic of opioid abuse across the country. He said he interviewed people from all walks of life to try and get the best understanding he could of the issue - something he describes as an epidemic.

“I lost my house. I lost my girlfriend of three and a half years. I spent six figures in cash just to sustain the addiction. I’ve seen people overdose. I’ve seen quite a bit over the years - that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

“I used to be a very bad opioid addict.

I was using five 80mg Oxycontins a day for two years, went on methadone for five years and eventually got off that,” he said. “Over seven years of using and going to clinics, I’d seen all the ins and outs of how those clinics operate. Through my own experience I saw a lot of things and became very curious as to what opioid use is like across the rest of the country.”

Opioids are medications often prescribed for pain, but can be easily abused and have a high rate of dependence. The prevalence of illicit opioid drug use has grown across the country, with a drug called fentanyl becoming increasingly present in various forms of opioids.

Cull is one of many Canadians who experienced an addiction to prescription opioids. He said the addiction is felt across the country and many areas are inadequately prepared to deal with the rampant use, especially in rural locations.

“With the rural areas, I found a lot of people were getting into opioids because of the accessibility of getting the drugs and the lack of resources to handle the potential outcomes of using these medications long-term,” he said.

“I found in rural areas especially that a lot of people get into the drugs because there is simply nothing else to do.

Otherwise, somebody gets a hold of the drugs and sells them for a higher cost to make some money. That was a constant I saw across the entire country.”

Cull said that although rural areas are susceptible, urban centres and everywhere in between are feeling the increased presence of opioids. He interviewed a wide variety of people, from a former nurse who stole the drugs from her hospital to an addictions counselling specialist who had seen the epidemic grow over 50 years.

He spoke to family members who had seen loved ones die from opioid overdoses and to current users of opioids. He said the use ranged from heroin, to Oxycontin, to hydromorphone, caboxone, fentanyl and much more.

His experience as a former opioid addict allowed him to delve deeply into the world of opioid addiction and to gain a

broad understanding of the federal issue.

“I could relate to these people because I’d been there. I knew what it was like,” Cull said.

“The benefit of my experience was that people would talk to me about their experiences with opioids because they knew I’d been there and that I wasn’t going to judge them. I had a deeper understanding of the stories I was documenting than most people.”

One of the things Cull noticed on his journey was that adequate resources to handle opioid addictions varied from province to province and from rural to urban settings.

“The excess of these pills that are being pushed out are starting an epidemic,” Cull said.

“The addictions are popular, and these numbers are growing so fast - I think opioid prescribing went up by something around 300 per cent since about 1999. It’s insane. It’s a very complex topic.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

President and Board Chair of Westerner Park Association Graham Heron was pleased to announce the position of CEO has been filled by Ben Antifaiff. He excitedly addressed a crowd, announcing his pleasure in joining the team and his vision looking forward into the year.

“I’m quite excited to be joining the Westerner Park organization. I’m very much looking forward to becoming an active member of our community in Red Deer and the surrounding rural communities. I’m looking forward to the chance and opportunity to build relationships with all of you and the folks in our community.”

Previous to his position with Westerner, Antifaiff acted as the vice president of finance administration and chief financial officer with the Regina Exhibition Association. Additionally, he taught finance and accounting at several Regina post-secondary institutions.

He said he was eager to use his experience within the fair and exhibition community to heighten the experience of Westerner Park for patrons, exhibitors and members of the association.

“2016 will certainly be an exciting year for our organization. There are a number of milestones, as Graham had introduced.

Our 125th celebration, the Memorial Cup are two exciting opportunities for our community,” Antifaiff said.

“Guests will be able to take in the Alberta Food and Beverage Expo in April, and we’re excited to welcome a Comic and Entertainment Expo in June. That will be a very interesting event, I promise. We’re also introducing the Home and Renovation Event in October,” he announced.

Westerner Park recently completed an

environmental scan to address satisfaction and needs of patrons, exhibitors and community stakeholders. Through this survey and research, Heron said the organization was able to assess and develop a new strategic development plan, assess awareness of structures and sources of funding and assess the satisfaction of customers. As well, the scan helped to develop a customer service optimization standard for future planning.

“We learned that Westerner Park has a position in the community that we weren’t utilizing to the best extent we could. The challenge to us was to become more to the community in our objective to be the destination for celebration,” Heron said.

“We want to be central in organizers’, participants’ and attendees’ minds. We don’t want to have the same fair that it was 20 years ago. We’ve got entertainment for the new generations and for generations coming up.”

One of the results of the research is a newly redesigned and mobile-friendly Westerner Park web site. The site has been retrofitted to be more user-friendly, with an easy to follow format and updated event calendar, officials said.

“We’re really pleased to introduce and encourage people to have a look at our new mobile friendly web site. The web site now allows all of our guests and users to access all information on the site from a my device. It’s very user friendly for either a smartphone, tablet, computer or whatever platform you choose and the user experience will meet the expectations,” Antifaiff said.

“With the confidence and knowledge I have from my prior positions in Regina, I can be really successful in helping our organization to get some things done and build upon some of the issues that came up with the environmental scan. Meanwhile, extensive renovations to the former Sears space are well underway. This redevelopment is also paving the way for further development in the mall itself. Other retailers have contacted the management team and shown interest in opening in conjunction with GoodLife said Hachey.

That includes interest in the former Safeway space – the spot is considered a high profile retail location, as it is near the busiest intersection in Red Deer.

Parkland Mall first opened its doors in 1970. Today, there are more than 100 retailers in operation there. And in 2011, Walmart also invested several million dollars in renovations to become a Supercentre as part of that overall commitment to offer customers a more thorough shopping experience, added Hachey.

The mall is owned by Morguard, one of Canada’s largest real estate develde

opers, with a managed portfolio of assets valued at nearly $19 billion.

This includes retail, office, residential and light industrial properties.

Ultimately, with the increased development in nearby neighborhoods and the continued growth of the City overall, the future is indeed bright. “Our retailers serve millions of customers each year, and with the current and future growth of the Clearview and Timberland areas two kilometres away from us, traffic will increase in the years to come. We’re looking forward to oil prices rebounding and enhanced retailer excitement about Alberta!”

OPINION Tough times ahead for provincial leaders Since being elected nearly one year ago, the NDP has certainly seen much in the way of contempt from many Albertans.

Petitions have been circulated calling for the resignation of Premier Rachel Notley, protests have been held and she has even received death threats over the last number of months.

According to social media, the party is being blamed for pretty much all of Alberta’s woes - whether the criticism is warranted or not and regardless of what the party inherited from the Conservatives. A facebook page dedicated to the NDP’s demise called ‘Albertans against the NDP’ now has 31,311 members who are pointing out the party’s every misstep - that can’t be a hopeful sight for Notley.

It’s important to remember that last May Albertans seemed pretty fed up with the Tories and were ready to embrace

change. Well it seemed as quick as the day after the election, that perspective for many Albertans changed almost immediately.

And now even out province citizens are chiming in. It’s no secret that Canadian finance giant Kevin O’Leary has not been a fan of Notley. According to news reports he has recently stated he will funnel $1 million into Canadian oil industries if Notley throws in the towel.

“I mean no disrespect when I say this, but here’s my offer: I’ll invest $1 million in Canadian energy companies if out of grace and for the absolute good of Canada the premier of Alberta resigns,” O’Leary told Newstalk 1010’s Live Drive radio program. “I wouldn’t touch them now because she doesn’t know what she’s doing. Please step down, please, do it for Canadians.”

During the radio show he also laid the blame for the province’s economic trou-

ble and massive layoffs on what he calls the inexperience of Notley’s government.

The unemployment rate for Alberta in December sat at 7.0% up from the 4.7% rate that was registered a year earlier.

“The Alberta government is in free fall, there’s total chaos there,” he said. “It’s like a horror movie, it’s an unbelievable series of events.”

We agree with O’Leary in that in Alberta’s tough economic time, it’s perhaps not best to be making hasty decisions which is what the NDP government has been criticized for in their approval of Bill 6 and the new carbon tax proposal, among other decisions.

Albertans want slow and steady in these times - when oil has plummeted to nearly $30 a barrel U.S. and the Canadian dollar sits a 70 cents on the U.S. dollar.

To be fair, Notley has taken on a province in which the oil and energy sector has always reigned supreme and much

of the current economic state is due to international matters that are beyond the scope of the province. We all know Alberta’s economy should have been diversified to at least some degree decades ago. And now with slumping oil prices and no end in sight, Albertans are really feeling the pressure. But now is not the time for the government to introduce new legislation that will further hurt or is even perceived to meddle with economic well being.

Little do we know what really lies ahead in the coming months - experts are all over the map when it comes to predictions with the price of oil and the industry as a whole. Some say we will begin to see a small upswing at the end of 2016 while you hear others say there will never be a recovery to levels of the past and that Albertans will possibly be entrenched in this down spiral until 2020. Who knows, it’s anyone’s guess.

The NDP are out of step with average Albertans In the federal election last fall 60%t of Albertans voted Conservative. Twelve per cent voted NDP. The provincial NDP was unimpressed. They have continued to govern as if they actually won the election last spring, not that the PCs lost it.

Alberta now enjoys a $3 billion carbon tax, which was unmentioned in the NDP election platform and is opposed by two out of three Albertans. Premier Rachel Notley initially said it was revenue-neutral when clearly it was not. Now she calls it ‘recycling’ because the taxes will be raised and spent in Alberta. Where else would she spend tax revenue?

The cost of doing so is between $4 billion and $12 billion. But there was nary a mention that we are sitting on an 800-to a thousand-year supply of the stuff, nor that Alberta is a leader in, and has quick access to, clean coal technologies and smokestack scrubbers.

We are promised petroleum royalty regime-change at a low

point in the price cycle.

Energy minister McCuaigBoyd said the industry ‘will welcome’ the change.

That ‘will’ is to be read as an imperative, not the use of the future tense.

Subsidies to so-called green technologies promise salvation. This has eluded the Germans, the Americans, and the Brits.

Chasing this chimera has cost Ontario its future prosperity.

Recently in Paris, where Notley was not actually at the negotiating table but simply there to ‘support’ the federal government, she hinted at a ‘climate leadership plan’ that would appeal to ‘global stakeholders and experts’.

She has plans ‘to bend the curve on emissions in a way that no one ever expected to see coming out

of Alberta’. As the director of the alarmist Pembina Institute, Ed Whittingham, said, Alberta is ‘back in the climate game’. Game indeed.

The NDP has also developed a ‘negotiating model’ for dealing with teachers’ unions. Recently Calgary Herald columnist Don Braid reported it was ‘routine’ for union bosses to be appointed to public bodies. The triumph of public-sector unions is at the heart of the longevity of the Ontario Liberal party and of the ruin of the Ontario economy. Clearly, we are next.

More recently the premier announced with great satisfaction that Alberta is no longer an ‘outlier’, which was more polite than her saying earlier that we are ‘an em-

barrassing cousin no one wants to talk about’. The meaning is the same Notley’s Alberta is just a normal, boring, socialist place where governments rule sheep and the main concerns are affordable housing, health care governance, and, as Shannon Phillips, minister for the status of women, put it, ‘building feminism’, whatever that might be.

Well, no one can say we haven’t been warned. To paraphrase Karl Marx, the NDP has become the executive committee of a coalition of radical enviros and social activists peddling ideological nostrums of a generation ago.

Fortunately for normal Albertans, the outside world has noticed.

In 2014 Alberta was the 16th most attractive place

in the world to invest in oil and gas developments. In 2015 it was 38th. Over half the respondents to this survey cited political uncertainty. Saskatchewan was ranked eighth. No wonder our credit rating was downgraded.

Meanwhile, Wildrose leader Brian Jean was working to create a ‘consolidated conservative coalition’. This helpful activity was immediately seen as a ‘unite the right’ initiative.

Given how radical the NDP has shown itself to be, Jean needs to unite the centre. After all, that’s where 60% of Albertans are.

Brian Malley appeal to be heard in May

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Convicted murderer Brian Malley will have his appeal heard in May after it was adjourned last week.

Malley, 57, will have his appeal spoken to in the Alberta Court of Appeals on May 4th. It was initially scheduled for last fall and was put over to Jan. 6th before being adjourned to the spring.

On Feb. 24th, 2015 he was found guilty of first-degree murder, causing an explosion of an explosive substance likely to cause serious bodily harm, death or serious damage to property and sending or delivering to a person an explosive device in relation to the death of Victoria Shachtay in 2011.

Malley was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years – an automatic sentence for a first-degree murder conviction. He was also sentenced to serve four years concurrently with the life sentence for the explosive charges he was convicted of – two years for each charge.

Meanwhile, Malley’s charges stem after

an explosion occurred inside Shachtay’s Innisfail residence in November 2011. The incident occurred after a package disguised as a Christmas gift was delivered to the home which RCMP confirmed was the source of the explosion.

Malley was arrested in Red Deer on May 25th, 2012.

Shachtay, 23, was disabled and in a wheelchair from a car collision that happened in 2004. She was also a single mother to a then seven-year-old girl.

Investigation showed Malley had known Shachtay for a number of years and acted as her financial adviser. Shachtay received a settlement of $575,000 after her accident.

A $200,000 loan was also taken out on behalf of Shachtay. All of that money was gone within four years. Malley also supported her from his own personal account in the amount of $44,000.

During the course of the six-week long trial, 50 witnesses testified and 100 exhibits were entered.

After the verdict was handed down Crown Prosecutor Anders Quist said this

case was one of the most cold-blooded that he has ever encountered.

STAN SCHALK FACES SEX ASSAULT CHARGE

Local pastor Stan Schalk will go to trial this summer after he has been charged with sexual assault.

Schalk was charged with one count of sexual assault after an

alleged incident that took place last June.

A trial date was set in Red Deer Provincial Court last week.

The trial, expected to take half a day, will run July 21st.

A publication ban on the victim’s name was also issued.

New housing system for homelessness Community agencies will work together with the City, the Province, and one another in a more coordinated and efficient housing system to reach Red Deer’s goal of ending homelessness in 2018.

In consultation with the community, the City of Red Deer has created the System Framework for Housing and Supports. This report outlines an improved system to better coordinate local services and serve individuals experiencing homelessness. On behalf of the Community Housing Advisory Board (CHAB), the City will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) based on the new framework this week.

Organizations are invited to submit proposals for housing and support services through the provincial Outreach Support Service Initiative (OSSI) funding.

“It’s important we look for new, improved ways to coordinate services in the housing system and serve clients better,” said City of Red Deer Social Planning Manager Scott Cameron. “After an extensive review of our system and a study of best practices elsewhere, our research tells us this is the direction we need to move in if we want to end homelessness.”

The review stemmed from goals of Red Deer’s Five Year Plan to End Homelessness 2014 to 2018, outlining the need to establish an effective and efficient coordinated system of care that prevents, mitigates and appropriately houses homeless individuals and provides them with support services.

The review of the current housing and supports system included a look at current programs and gaps, housing infrastructure, funding mandates, data analysis, as well as consultation with agencies and clients.

The new system will include a single entry point for housing programs and an emphasis on matching the right person with the right program.

“Our data tells us that if we shift to more proactive outreach focusing on those who have been homeless longest, about 160 people, we can end homelessness,” said Cameron.

The City’s working definition of homelessness means the system can house an individual who has presented to the system within 28 days.

The City receives $3.44 million per year from the Province which is allocated to service providers in the community.

MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER APPEARS IN COURT A man charged with a

Christmas Day murder made his first appearance in Red Deer court on Monday.

Chad Alexander Kulba, 33, of Red Deer, has been charged with the second degree murder of Thomas Patrick Braconnier.

The victim’s body had been found in the early morning hours of Dec. 25th within a business vestibule near 50th St. and 50th Ave. in downtown Red Deer.

Kulba had been identified

early on as a suspect in this investigation and had been detained Christmas Day by the RCMP for questioning. While detained, Kulba attempted to disarm a police officer and was subsequently charged in relation to that altercation and remanded into custody. He remained in custody on that charge and was subsequently re-arrested Jan. 5th at the Red Deer Remand Centre and is charged with second degree murder and committing an

indignity to a human body in relation to the death of Braconnier.

The accused and victim were acquainted with each other from residing in the same general neighbourhood.

The police are seeking no other suspects in this investigation.

Kulba appeared via CCTV in Red Deer Provincial Court on Monday morning but his case was adjourned until Jan. 25th.

Red Deer City council continues operating budget debate

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS Red Deer City councillors continue to work their way through the 2016 operating budget.

As of press time on Tuesday, councillors were still debating the budget, which they began working through last Wednesday. Council has lowered the tax rate, which began at 3.78%, to 3.08% as of end of day on Monday.

On Monday, much of the discussion surrounded the approval of new RCMP resources. Council approved the hiring of six new RCMP members and three municipal staff for a total cost of $567,000 - $135,000 in 2016 and $432,000 in 2017.

Supt. Scott Tod told council Red Deer currently has 149 RCMP officers with 80 of those as general duty members.

He added typically each officer takes on 179 criminal cases annually.

“While the community wants a safe community, it’s an expensive proposition. We can’t police our way to a safe community. We can only ask our police to do so much,” said Councillor Ken Johnston. “The burden of a safe community rests on all of us.”

Council also approved funding for three additional police operations communication operators to extend the answering of the non-emergency complaint line from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Previously the communication operators worked 8-4:30 p.m., seven days a week.

The cost of this initiative is $313,190.

“For me it comes down to the service level obviously but also the superintendent of our City and the director of our City are both saying that this is necessary to leverage the Criminal Code effectiveness of our force - I am going to support this,” said Johnston.

Mayor Tara Veer said the addition of the police opera-

tions communication operators is much needed.

“This is one of the most significant areas of frustration for our community, particularly with the enforcement of non criminal areas such as the Community Standards Bylaw. This particular area previously shut down at 4:30 p.m. and typically people are home after 4:30 p.m.,” she said.

Council also approved $85,568 for the expansion of transit service to Garden Heights, Clearview Ridge and Timberlands on Sundays and holidays.

Earlier in the budget, council also approved an additional $16,000 for councillor professional development.

Councillors were each allocated $11,477 annually for professional development - this will now increase $2,000 per councillor.

“There are different things in our committees that we are assigned throughout the term, differences in our interests as well as in our own different leadership style and how we learn,” said Councillor Dianne Wyntjes. “I am in support of the increase. I am one of the councillors who does use mine. It’s very interesting as a councillor because you come to the table with what you think you know, and you better have the insight to realize and recognize what you don’t know and fill your tool box with knowledge and skills.”

Other items approved in the 2016 budget include $183,640 for roads maintenance growth, $229,087 for new neighbourhood parks landscaping, $309,114 for preventative road maintenance, $504,500 for corporate fleet in the public works department, $187,876 for FireMedic staffing increases, $100,000 for storm drainage system cleaning, inspection and monitoring and $321,440 for building leases, among others.

In addition, during Monday’s meeting, Councillor Buck Buchanan made a motion that directed City administration to explore the consolidation of police and emergency services dispatch with a report to be brought back to council by the end of June. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Different modes of learning in children

BY JAMES DRUMAN Have you ever noticed how natural it is for children to play pretend?

They’ll pretend to be anything from a pet dog to a fireman to you, and they certainly do commit to their roles.

Children love to act out the various roles they see in the world around them.

This is an awesome exercise in imagination and creation, but it is also a great way for them to develop their self identity while at the same time learning to understand the world.

They also learn a lot about focus while acting - simply because they take their characters so seriously.

Children really do go to great lengths to mimic their models as best as they know how - just watch how a child performs all of the tasks they know to be involved with

cooking while they are tossing together an imaginary meal in a toy kitchen.

Building blocks, Lincoln logs and Lego - these types of games are great for kids, and it’s the sort of thing that kids will find themselves enraptured in. I remember as a child, I’d turn anything into a common building block, from coins to dominos to books. Heck, we’d even turn couch cushions into building blocks for building fortresses.

This type of game is great for a child because it gives them hands-on experience with how the physical world responds to their interaction. It can be a great introduction into the fields of science when it comes down to it. Lego and other similar toys really help a child to develop their creativity and build confidence, and these types of games typically draw other children in, so it is also a chance for them

to learn about how to interact with other children.

Any game that takes creativity, like those mentioned above, certainly allows for creative expression, but in this case, I am referring to the arts.

Painting, drawing, dancing, music - anytime a child decides to create something out of nothing. My favorite thing about this type of expression is that your art can truly capture the imagination forever and become a passion that never dies.

Never forget how crucial physical exercise is for a child either. Running around outside, climbing on things, roughhousing it is all great for developing their physical body. They build motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

They work their cardiovascular system, and develop endurance. They learn to balance.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Playing with other children in an outdoor environment also puts them in unique situations where they have to learn to work with other children and confront the small challenges that come with doing so.

Add in the much-need-

ed effect of sunshine and fresh air, and I could go on all day about the benefits of a child just going outside and letting loose.

If you take a look at just about any type of play, you will find there are real benefits for your children. And

when you reach that perspective, you see that it is much more than a means of entertaining them and killing some time; it is something that should be planned and leveraged for their best interest.

Hotline numbers allow for easier access to crucial services

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Hotline services are important to our community, because they allow us to easily connect with services with easy-torecall numbers like 911 and 511.

It is likely that the most recognizable of the hotline numbers is 911. Another popular hotline service is 511, used for checking road conditions. The number 411 has long been used as a phone directory service.

Last year saw the launch of two new services to keep in mind going forward: 811 for HealthLink and 211, referral services presented by United Way. “The service itself of Healthlink is identical although the number has become simplified. Several other provinces, including B.C. and Saskatchewan, also use 811 for accessing non-urgent healthcare services. This past June, Alberta adopted 811 to maintain consistency for those travelling between provinces,” said Melissa McDougall, site manager of HealthLink Calgary.

“It’s an easier number to remember but the service is exactly the same. You access the selections identical to the tollfree number, but the phone number is much easier to remember than the local zone number. If you’re travelling across the country, that 811 number stays the same. You know that you can dial it and get to the health care services you need.”

HealthLink is an Alberta Health Services program that provides health advice and navigation services for Albertans in non-emergency health issues. Rather

than calling 911, a person could call 811 first and see if their symptoms warrant an ambulance or emergency trip, or if self-care at home is the easiest route.

According to the Alberta Health Services web site, 811 is useful in helping to locate services such as immunization clinics, chronic disease management classes, mental health or parenting programs and even family doctors.

“It’s important to be able to access the services where you can then determine what the need is, versus going directly to an emergency department, for example,” McDougall said.

“This way you can speak to a professional and determine if you do or don’t need to go into a facility, and which facility is best. It helps to ease the burden on the health care system but also on families themselves because they’re being directed to the right resource.

“We have a large plethora of online information as well at myhealth.alberta. ca, where people can do some reading about their situation. It helps to get them some additional health information and knowledge for their concern. HealthLink provides the same service as it did before we had the 811 number - all that has changed is this easier number to remember.”

Also, 211 is an important referral service that was launched in the community in March of last year. It is a service provided by the United Way that provides a central database of local services that include but are not limited to mental health services, housing and financial crisis support, refugee support, emergency situation infor-

The primary goal of 211 is to connect a person to local social services in a direct and easy-to-navigate manner.

“The more people who know about 211, the better. A person might not need the service themselves, but it could be a neighbour, a family member, a friend or someone else who may need the service down the road,” said United Way CEO Robert Mitchell.

“From the other perspective, any agencies who think they are not involved and who want to become involved, they can certainly get in touch with United Way and we will add them to the database if they’re eligible.”

Being a relatively new hotline service, Mitchell said he hopes more people become aware of 211 and its applications in the community. He said people call for a wide range of reasons, but he was able to provide some data into top inquiries.

“Unsurprisingly, the top issue that people are asking about lately is income support and employment. It was followed by basic needs searches, and it looks like consumer services and health care followed those requests. Equal to that was mental health and substance abuse services and organizational community services,” he said.

“I still think 211 is quite new to people and we’re really trying to keep up promoting the service. I think there is a little bit of an awareness issue in getting people and organizations to think about how they can use 211.”

An example of how 211 can help is through their crisis support. Currently, 211 is encouraging all community agencies offering refugee services and support to contact them so that their information can be added to the database. Then, people can call 211 and ask about the specific refugee services they require and can be directed to these services in a timely, organized manner.

“We encourage local organizations that are working with refugees to make sure the information about their particular services and programs is up to date on the 211 database,” Mitchell said.

“Then, we can ask people who want information on local Syrian refugee services to ring 211 and our people will have the information at their fingertips to get out.

“We want to get more organizations to think about 211 first. Our resources can handle referral services rather than organizations having to do it themselves.” kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

Maintaining optimal eye health with diabetes

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Every November marks Diabetes Awareness Month, but how critical blood sugar management is for those living with diabetes is of course a message that needs to be emphasized through the year.

An estimated 3.4 million Canadians are living with diabetes.

The Canadian Diabetes Association continues to team up with Alberta doctors of optometry to educate Red Deer residents about the risk factors associated with the development of the disease.

Type 1 diabetes prevents the body from producing insulin, and Type 2 diabetes prevents the body from properly using insulin or making enough of it, explained Debra Jakubec, regional director Alberta and Northwest Territories at the Canadian Diabetes Association. “This leads to high levels of sugar in the bloodstream, which causes damage to organs, blood vessels and nerves.”

There is no known cause or cure for Type 1 diabetes. Type 2 is caused by a number of factors, which may include ethnicity, family history, socioeconomic status and environment.

Diabetes and its complications can also affect many parts of the eye, the most serious condition being diabetic retinopathy.

If left untreated, can result in blindness.

“Diabetic retinopathy occurs when there is a weakening or swelling of the tiny blood vessels in the eye, resulting in fluid leakage, the growth of new blood vessels and other changes,” said Dr. Kevin Hesterman, a Red

Deer doctor of optometry at the Red Deer Eye Care Centre.

He added one of the places Type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed is during an eye exam, as a common symptom is a negative impact on vision.

“In the early stages, diabetic retinopathy is monitored through annual eye health examinations – but if necessary, it may be treated with intraocular injections or laser therapy that seals off leaking blood vessels,” he said. “High blood sugar damages the blood vessels throughout our bodies.

Leakage can damage these delicate structures throughout the body,” he said.

Like most chronic diseases, early detection and proper management of diabetes is key to decreasing complications such as vision loss and blindness. “The blood vessel leakage and swelling actually causes damage to those retinal cells.”

Hesterman said that there are things that can increase the risk of eye damage in those with diabetes as well, including smoking and high blood pressure. “Drinking alcohol can also increase your risk of diabetic retinopathy.”

Meanwhile, some of the most common signs and symptoms of diabetes include unusual thirst, frequent urination, weight change (gain or loss), extreme fatigue or lack of energy, blurred or fluctuating vision, frequent or recurring infections, cuts and bruises that are slow to heal, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet; and trouble getting or maintaining an erection.

Some people can go lengthy periods of time with Type 2 diabetes without even knowing it. “Often the symptoms can be

quite quiet and go undiagnosed for months or even years. So the message is to check with your physician regularly and to make sure you get comprehensive eye exams.”

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your health care provider right away. It’s also important to recognize that many people who have Type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.

The Canadian Diabetes Association recommends that anyone aged 40 and older should get checked.

“I can tell you of several instances when a patient has come in for a routine eye exam and an unusual fluctuation in their

vision - they just thought their glasses prescription had changed - and it changed in a way that was unusual. Sometimes their vision actually gets better,” he said. “But as the blood sugars go up, in some cases quite extremely, it causes a change in the way the eye focuses.

“Often in those cases we will send the patient back to their physicians and have blood work ordered. Sure enough, it’s often diabetes.”

Local resources available for suicide prevention

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Depression and suicide is a topic that affects all ages and social classes, making them topics of one of the most important conversations to carry on, experts say.

As many people have experienced losses of friends, family members, classmates or colleagues, they can speak to the importance of prevention. In light of another recent loss to the Red Deer community, Suicide Information and Education Services continues to remind citizens there are many supports in place to prevent and cope with depression.

Dawne Adkins of Suicide Information and Education Services (SIES) said it is always a good idea to be holding conversations and reducing the stigma of dealing with depression and suicide. She and the other members of the organization do this through various community outreach programs made for all ages.

“Over my career, I’ve certainly seen the stigma reducing in terms of not being

afraid to say the word suicide. People are recognizing there is help out there and there is no shame in asking for it - that is huge,” Adkins said.

“It’s huge to send the message that it’s okay to ask for help. It doesn’t matter if it’s for math homework or helping with stress or helping with thoughts of suicide.

There is no shame in any of that.”

She said most people either know someone who has a mental health concern or who has had thoughts of suicide, or both.

“It’s not as foreign to people as it once was,” she said.

“That’s not because there’s been an increase in either mental health or suicide cases, it’s just that the barrier has been removed so that we can talk about it.”

Suicide Information & Education Services offers a wide variety of programs, from in-school speaking sessions targeted specifically to age groups, to adult employer/employee training, to adult coping skills and support groups. These programs run all year and are easily accessible for anyone seeking information.

“We do offer support for adults in terms of both training - either a group of staff, or volunteers or any kind of group - and a support group for people who have lost people to suicide, which runs weekly. We also have outreach for people that need help either supporting a family member, a friend or with their own thoughts. We are always available for that,” Adkins said.

“We also have our Community Helpers Program that identifies kids as supporting, caring individuals in their peer groups and we give them support and training. We’re one of approximately 14 sites across Alberta that deliver that provincial program,” she explained.

“We go into the schools, survey the kids, ask them who they talk to and we invite the kids who have been identified to take that training. We try to keep it as

fun as possible while learning some new skills.”

The information services are age appropriate and grow in depth accordingly.

The programs teach kids skills from open communication to coping with personal feelings and seeking help.

“The age kind of directs us in terms of what we provide. For the youngest kids, we talk to them about coping strategies and going to a trusted adult. We talk to them about their problems and how to cope with loss by using different formats and activities like colouring and stories.

It’s to get them talking and communicating with us, and getting them used to sharing information,” Adkins said.

“By about Grade 6 we start talking to them about suicide. We talk to them about the warning signs and still discuss the importance of going to a trusted adult because they can’t handle it alone.

We also get the kids used to saying the word suicide and understanding that it does affect people and can affect people at any stage of their life. We explain that it doesn’t mean they’re crazy or that they’ve done something wrong.”

Adkins said it is important for children and adults alike to have people in their world they can speak to about suicide.

“We want people to be as comfortable as possible when opening up and sharing their feelings, especially with their own feelings or those of a friend.”

“The reality in responding to complaints is the police have a role and a job that they play. The Red Deer City Victim Services Unit recently recognized an important milestone - 25 years serving the community.

“There are currently 28 volunteers with the Victim Services Unit in Red Deer and there are currently 10 applicants waiting on security clearances,” said Const. Jody Young, program manager with the Red Deer City Victim Services Unit, adding that volunteers have to be 18 years of age. “To become a volunteer with Victim Services is sometimes a lengthy process.

They have to be able to get an Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance. That can take anywhere from four months to over a year.

“That for us is one of the biggest challenges. We have people interested in the program, but they have to be able to get that clearance and we have to maintain them while they wait.”

Volunteers also have to do an intensive online course in which they have four months to complete before being accepted into the program.

“It is so crucial to acknowledge the contributions of our volunteers and they are very much valued and are the backbone of the program,” said Young. “They are a very giving, hard working group of individuals who give their time and listening ears to those in need during and after traumatic situations. They treat everyone with respect and kindness no matter what the situation and the compassion they show the people we serve is an inspiration to us all.”

In terms of what volunteers respond to, Young said volunteers deal with all crime types as well as sudden deaths and next of kin notification. “In respect to attending on scene that is dealt with on a case by case basis. The officers on scene have to assess the risk to the volunteers,” she said. “We have been on scene for things like robberies and sexual assaults.

We may be called to what we consider the primary scene or secondary location which is typically at the detachment or the hospital.”

When out on location, volunteers wear a GPS tracking device. “It’s considered one

additional layer of safety.”

There are three shifts a day Monday to Friday that Young said volunteers can choose to donate their time to. “That’s really where the follow up with victims is done.”

Referrals to RDCVSU are typically made by the officer on scene; however, individuals can self-refer to the program by contacting the Red Deer City Victim Services Unit.

A ball to remember for a young Central Alberta girl

Next, a call out was made on social media, followed by lots of determination by the organizers, an entire community and beyond rallying together and soon alittle girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wish was granted in just over 48 hours.

On Dec. 21st a ball, fit for two princesses, was held at Ă&#x2030;cole James S. McCormick School in Lacombe. The gymnasium wastransformed into a party palace, with a DJ, balloons, flowers, a chocolate fountain and several princesses and princes.

The guest of honour was six-year-old Makenzie Fickle, a student of the school, who was diagnosed with metablastoma, aform of brain cancer.

Makenzie was first diagnosed over a year ago, and after multiple treatments and surgeries, she was declared cancer-freethis past August. Living in northern Alberta, the family relocated to Lacombe after staying at the Ronald

After hearing the news, family friend Brandy Forgeron, whose son Alex is in Makenzieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s class, had to tell her son one of hisbest friends would not be returning to school after the Christmas break. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Immediately he turned around and said he wanted to be Makenzieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prince charming,â&#x20AC;? explained Forgeron. Inspired, shefirst went onto Facebook to try to locate a Prince Charming costume for her son, and then after the resounding response ofcommunity members who wanted to volunteer services or donate towards a ball, she realized something bigger couldhappen.

From her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earnest statement birthed the idea of the Princess Ball - a magical night for Makenzie, her sister Miah andthe rest of their family. The wheels began in motion on a Friday, after clearing the idea with Makenzieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mom, and by thefollowing Monday, the ball was held in the school gym.

First donations came in of black table cloths, followed by a donated limo ride for the family to the ball, then a photo booth,DJ services, two photographers, a special three-tier princess cake, cupcakes, a nail and makeup salon, pizza, a visit fromthe Glitter Bomb, flower bouquets, corsages, bouton-

nieres and a red carpet among so many others. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really a matter of networking within the community,â&#x20AC;? said Forgeron. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We received donations from Red Deer, Olds,Lacombe, Ponoka and Innisfail. So many people within the community just completely shined for her.â&#x20AC;?

In keeping with the princess theme, the Cornerstone Youth Theatre from Red Deer also visited dressed as Disney princessesand princes and performed several dances. Makenzie and her sister Miah also received a special message and later a homevisit from Disney princess Elsa. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really amazing to see the family dancing and Makenzie smiling,â&#x20AC;? said Forgeron. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is exactly what our communitydoes.

Tania Buckler Fickle, Makenzieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandmother, visiting from Peace River, was in attendance with the rest of her family at thePrincess Ball. She had set up an initial GoFundMe page for Makenzie in 2014 when she was first diagnosed and the familywas living up north.

Buckler Fickle said at the time of Makenzieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diagnosis, the communities in northern Alberta, like Grande Prairie, Peace Riverand Fairview, also rallied together last year to raise funds for her granddaughter.

For George Alonso, the Princess Ball project goes beyond the Central Alberta area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It all started with a post on social media where a woman was asking for a miracle,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I read it on a Saturdayafternoon when I was in my office. I realized that there was a little girl in need. Within 24 hours more than 20 businessesand individuals had pitched in to help out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one thought twice to jump in and help,â&#x20AC;? he said of the community.

Alonsoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s media company based in Red Deer, donated their services and time to create a special memory video for Makenzieand her family. The company opened their studio the night of the ball to do the voice over, created the animation and editthe video for the family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was absolutely magical,â&#x20AC;? said Alonso of the ball. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People need to hear good news these days. People need to know thatwe care for others. The community is generous. They give to us so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great when we can give back.â&#x20AC;?

Forgeron said the community group is still raising funds for the Fickle family as they are planning to go on a family vacationin the future.

Timber Kings build home in Central Alberta

BY SARAH MAETCHE RED DEER EXPRESS From towering trees to majestic log homes, the Timber Kings from the HGTV program are dream granters - making a client’s vision of a sprawling log mansion or a basic tree fort a reality.

Timber Kings follows a group of master builders from Pioneer Log Homes in Williams Lake, B.C. as they travel across North America to construct one of a kind log homes.

In the upcoming third season, the group traveled to Central Alberta to construct a home for a couple, located outside of Ponoka.

Pioneer Log Homes of B.C. General Manager and one of six Timber Kings André Chevigny said being a part of Timber Kings is, “Icing on the cake.”

“We’ve had a business long before we had the TV show,” he said. “We were always joking we should be on TV. Now, it’s come to reality. The wonderful thing about it is it’s different from all of the other shows.

Viewers get to see something natural, constructed by hand with incredible craftsmanship from start to finish.

“It is amazing what we are doing here today will be seen for centuries by people. That just motivates us so much.”

Chevigny has been involved in building log homes for well over 30 years, getting his start in 1982 straight out of high school, helping out his brother. Today, and after approximately 1,500 builds, he manages around 115

employees at Pioneer Log Homes B.C. and tends to a global client list for the in demand handmade homes.

“It’s evolved over the years,” he said of the log home business. “That’s kind of how we started shipping into the U.S. and how we started getting the exposure that we did. A lot of it was by word of mouth.”

Slowly, but with incredible precision like an artfully cut log, the client list has expanded across the continent and beyond.

Chevigny calls Timber Kings a team effort.

“It’s not just the six people you see on the TV show,” he said. “It’s an immense crew of really talented men and women that make us look good on the show.”

Thousands of hours of manpower go into each home, as each log is hand-

crafted in the Pioneer Log Homes yard.

“We will take six or seven months to build it,” explained Chevigny. “Once the construction is done in our yard, then we have to number it, disassemble it and then move it to wherever it is going.

“It’s really neat,” he added.

“In four or five days there’s a house sitting there. That’s what’s really cool about what we do.”

As for the build near Ponoka, Chevigny said the crew delivered the home this fall. Filming took place in October with a fair portion of the home being constructed throughout the month. Final touches, like the windows and doors, were still being made well into December.

The home is three levels, approximately 8,000 sq. ft. and took a crew of around 30-40 people six or seven months to construct it in the B.C. yard. The home consisted of 1,500 handcrafted pieces (no machines used), all which were shipped to Alberta.

“It has great big massive cedar logs with all kinds of character and flares and copper-cladded windows,” said Chevigny. “It’s just an amazing structure.

Something we are really, really proud of.”

As for season three, Chevigny said the season is full of surprises and features many amazing homes.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s staggering. The season is incredible and so are the houses we get to show.” news@lacombeexpress.com

New Board Members Appointed Red Deer College Board of Governors is pleased to introduce its newest Board members.

Robin Chiles is a second year student at Red Deer College in the Open Studies program, and a member of the President’s and Dean’s Honour Rolls. Her goal is to gain acceptance into the Bachelor of Science, Nursing program at RDC. After being personally touched by cancer, she wants one day to have a career as a nurse in the Cancer Clinic at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Robin was born and raised in Red Deer and is proud to call this city her home. She is a passionate student who enjoys learning new things and serving her community through valuable work on committees and volunteering for a nonprofit organization.

Robin is married to her high school sweetheart, Greg, and is proud of her two children, Jacob and Brooklyn.

Shawn Deveau works in RDC’s Information Technology Services department. He has been a Technical Support Analyst in the department since 2009, working hard to support students, instructors and staff every day. Shawn also served the College’s support staff as Chair of the local AUPE Chapter for a number of years. Shawn has effectively built relationships at RDC, recognizing that open and respectful discussion among a wide range of people with different perspectives leads to the best decisions for learners and everyone who works at RDC. Shawn is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Sociology. For leisure, Shawn enjoys honing his craft of singing and song writing.

Red Feathered Women aim to make a difference

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Through January the Red Deer Express is publishing a series involving several community groups and how the inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women affects them moving forward. Interviews with local Elders, community supports and City staff will be included to also help examine what the inquiry means for Red Deer as a whole.

Walking With Our Sisters (WWOS) is a powerful installation that opened many people in Red Deer’s eyes to the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

From WWOS came a group known now as Red Feather Women, a social justice action group.

The Red Feather Women describe themselves in many ways, but a theme prevails: the women are a group who stand together to support each other and the women in the community - especially Aboriginal women - as they move forward to speak out against injustice and vulnerabilities.

Red Feather Women gather as a women’s circle on the second Sunday of each month at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery. The women come together to discuss issues in the community, support each other through personal issues and to plan a presence in the community.

Nadette Agecoutay, a Red Feather woman, explained the group can mean many things to each member but the core of the group is about supporting each other.

“Red Feather Women is a group of women that started with Walking With Our Sisters and it’s an amazing circle of women who can support each other and keep each other strong,” Agecoutay said.

As the women gather in the circle, they are taking part in a tradition of First Nations culture. Historically, women of the community played important roles of guidance, decision making and support to others in the community. The grandmothers of the community were joined by young women and children to support each other and guide their community.

They were known as Feather Women. This influenced how the group got their name.

The group is intended for all women in the community - First Nations, Indigenous, non-Aboriginal and everyone in between. The group spans several generations and is open to any woman who feels as though she wants to be supported or lend her voice to the cause.

“We are here to be that voice for women who don’t feel like they have a voice in our community. We are here to be a presence in our community and show that we are here to create change. We are going to continue to work,” Agecoutay said.

Teresa Neuman, another Red Feather woman, was happy to share what the group means to her.

“For me, this is an opportunity to support Aboriginal women by building community connection and resilience,” Neuman said.

“We’re improving relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in our community. We’re raising awareness and taking concrete action on social issues. We are supporting community initiatives that further that cause of protecting and supporting Aboriginal women, and Aboriginal community in general.”

The Red Feather Women plan to take on many roles in our community. Social advocacy, community volunteering, support and creativity are some of the goals of the group. Through WWOS, many groups of women have come together across the province and country to support each other within their communities, and to engage other women to see how they can work together.

There is even a similar group in

Edmonton that has reached out to Red Feather Women of Red Deer to seek support and guidance in how they can plan for social activism and change in their community. Relationships like this are also a goal of the group.

Community Elder and Red Feather Woman Theresa ‘Corky’ Larsen Jonasson was greatly dedicated to and affected by the Walking With Our Sisters installation this past summer. She is known by other members in the community as an advocate of women’s issues, as well as being passionate about youth and change within the community.

“Walking With Our Sisters was so hard on so many people. I watched so many people in our community who were affected physically, spiritually, emotionally, mentally,” Larsen Jonasson said.

“There are still people in our community who are struggling from that work.

That we continue to show up is a testament to women’s strength. To me, no community goes down until the hearts of the women are laying on the ground.

That’s a quote, not my words, but that’s the truth of it,” she said.

She added she was worried as an Elder because she saw the powerful impact and pain that Walking With Our Sisters had brought up in various community members. She said it was tough to ask them to continue the work, but was overwhelmed with pride as people stood up to continue to acknowledge the missing and murdered women, and the vulnerability of the community.

Red Feather Women is one of many groups in the community that is working towards answers and prevention of missing and murdered Aboriginal women. The group isn’t focused solely on that issue, but is guided by it.

Exploring a dramatic local geographic landmark One of the most dramatic landmarks in Central Alberta is the geographical feature on the east side of the City of Red Deer, known as the Divide.

However, while this ridge, or range of hills, can be generally seen throughout the district, surprisingly little has ever been written about it.

The Divide is a large fold in the sedimentary sandstone of the region.

It was likely created as an outer ‘ripple’ when the Rocky Mountains were formed. With an elevation of up to 1,070m (3,500 ft.), it is one of the highest points east of the mountains in western Canada.

As such, it has sometimes been described as the ‘divide’ between the Rocky Mountains and their foothills and the great expanses of prairie.

Hence, the ancient river flowed northwards to the Ponoka/New Norway districts before it was able to flow eastwards again.

However, during glacial times, the immense sheets of retreating ice blocked that ancient course. An enormous lake of glacial water filled the valley on the west side of the Divide. Finally, the massive pent-up meltwaters cut a dramatic new channel (the Canyon) through the Divide, a short distance

downstream from where the Blindman now enters the Red Deer River.

The Divide Hills, in ancient times, teemed with wildlife.

Hence, the ridge became a popular hunting and camping area for the First Nations. Not surprisingly, the hills became widely known as the Hunting Hills, a designation that has been continued to this day with the name of the public high school on the southeastern side of the City.

The steep slopes along some parts of the Divide made attractive spots for buffalo jumps, an effective means of harvesting large numbers of the bison that were a predominant source of food, clothing, and teepee hides for the First Nations. One of those jumps was located in what is now known as the Willowdale district.

Since the Divide Hills were a place of plentiful food and shelter, they took on religious significance to the First Nations.

Two prominent hills to the south had ceremonial mounds of elk antlers and bison horns piled on their summits, something which is remembered to this day with the names Horn Hill and Antler Hill.

Because they can be easily seen from great distances, particularly in the early days when prairie fires greatly limited the amount of tree growth, the Divide Hills attracted the attention of early explorers and travelers.

In July 1858, the members of the famous Palliser expedition got their first view of the Rocky Mountains from ‘the Nick’, a natural pass across the Divide, which is located a short distance south of Secondary Highway 595 (the Coal Trail). On his map

of Alberta, John Palliser even designated the Divide Hills as the ‘Nick Hills’.

In the early 1880s, when the first permanent settlers began to arrive in the area, they initially settled along the Red Deer River and the CalgaryEdmonton Trail.

However, as the settlements began to spread out, people began locate their new homes and farms along the slopes of the Divide’s western escarpment. The higher elevations provided some relief from the frosts which often hit the valley areas below.

While the slopes of the Divide were less frost prone, they still provided a barrier to travel eastwards.

It was not until the mid1890s that very many people took up homesteads east of the Divide in such districts as Valley Centre.

However, as the region became more fully settled, the Divide became a meeting place. In 1920, the Divide Hall was constructed on the north side of the Coal Trail and became a very popular social and recreational gathering place for the residents of Willowdale, Valley Centre and Springvale.

In 1957, the first television station, C.H.C.A. (later renamed C.K.R.D.) was constructed on the Divide as that provided an additional 188m of elevation to the 95m antenna and greatly increased the broadcast area.

In the early 1960s, a radar missile detection facility, known as the 43 Radar Squadron, was built on the top of the Divide on the east side of Willowdale. The station was part of the Cardin/ Pinetree line of the North American Air Defence (N.O.R.A.D.) system.

Both the radar facility and the hilltop TV station are now gone.

Central Alberta artist excited to share her craft

BY SARAH MAETCHE RED DEER EXPRESS With an affection for travel, a Central Alberta artist has been injecting colour and passion into her works, showcasing her adventures and inspiring new ones.

Danielle Folkerts, born and currently residing in Lacombe, uses a blend of painting, drawing, photography and collage to create kaleidoscopic creations here in Central Alberta. She flows positivity through her artwork, encouraging you to travel, explore what’s in your backyard or see what else is out there.

Also known as the Travelling Artisan, her works are often inspired, but not solely, by many of her travels.

Her artistic journey began a few years ago, after graduating high school and attending the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD) in Calgary.

“I was just always drawing,” she said of her upbringing. “I think that’s what I always knew I wanted to do - art and teach art.”

After the first week of attending ACAD, Folkerts was “sold” on the fine arts program and decided to branch out and major in painting. Following graduation, she used a scholarship to fund a trip to Italy to paint.

“That kind of started my fascination and love of combining travel and art,” she said. “They are pretty much two of my favourite things.”

Among her many adventures, Folkerts travelled around the U.K. and in the following year, traveled south to Costa Rica and Panama to practice yoga and explore.

“I literally just backpacked around and took photos,” she said. “I think that trip specifically inspired me. My palette has changed a lot. At school I was painting with a lot of browns. Everything was really muted. Everything was a portrait. Two years later, now my work has completely changed. The colours are a bit more happy and represent a little bit more the places I’ve been, like the colour of the ocean or the sky.

“Definitely, the more I want to paint, the more I want to have colour.”

Among her many works covering subjects like landscapes or nature, Folkerts has come to be known for her paintings and works portraying maps.

“I started painting them because I’ve always done portraiture or representational work,” she explained. “I was travelling a lot. I was kind of looking at abstraction.

I kind of realized I like maps. You know what it is when you see it but they are still very abstract.

“For me it was going to be a gateway to abstraction but it kind of became something a lot bigger because people were really drawn to maps.”

Folkerts continues to paint maps because of the response the works receive at markets and art shows.

“It’s neat because conceptually, it just starts conversations,” she explained.

“People want to talk about it. People love it. Whether it’s a love of travel or an experience somewhere, I’m just going to keep going with it because it’s exciting and I like it.”

Over the past year, Folkerts has attended several markets in Central Alberta and will be teaching art and painting classes over the coming winter months.

ENTERTAINMENT Singer Kym Simon performs in support of latest CD

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS With years of experience under her belt, singer/songwriter Kym Simon has evolved into an engaging musical sensation — spearheading the creative charge by writing or co-writing all tracks from her EP, Mirror, which is set to be released Jan. 29th.

Simon performs in Red Deer Jan. 14th at Fratters as part of ‘The Tomato Sessions’ (An Intimate Evening of Women in Country Music) along with Luanne Carl, Joni Delaurier and Alecia Aichelle.

Mirror follows on the heels of If You Stole My Heart, released in 2000, and 2007’s Priority, both of which were recorded in Nashville.

Part of the inspiration for the project came from one of her students - Simon also teaches music, songwriting and performance besides being a busy musician herself, plus a mom of two young kids.

“He said why aren’t you doing more - why aren’t you doing more albums?” she recalls during a recent interview. “So we kind of teamed up, started an entertainment company and thought yes, let’s do a project.

“I was also so inspired by the people I was writing with. So I ended up doing the demos in a studio in Edmonton, and then we got referred to go to one in Calgary and that’s where we ended up doing the project.”

She’s thrilled with the results, describing the songs on Mirror as uplifting yet serious at the same time.

She’s also excited to chat about being a teacher and mentor to up-and-coming musicians.

“It has been the best experience,” she said. “It’s the best thing I could have ever done because when you are teaching other people, you just learn so much about yourself. Different parts of my own thinking have been opened up by their thoughts.”

Simon, who lives in Devon, has been teaching for about seven years now.

And one of the biggest highlights with the group came about last year, when she took 52 people (students and family members) on a trip to Nashville.

“They ranged in age from three to 60,” she added with a laugh.

“Having done my two previous albums there, I just wanted to show them the City. Lots of them have big dreams and goals, and I thought where better to take them then to Nashville? And when you see all the other artists there, it opens your eyes to, ‘I better work my butt off in this industry’.”

They also got to sing at some pretty amazing places, including Graceland and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

“It was crazy - we had a lot of fun. And they just saw the real deal.”

For Mirror, Simon laid down tracks at MCC Recording Studios under the eye of veteran producer Johnny Gasparic (Gord Bamford, George Canyon, Clayton Bellamy).

“He was patient and let me do my thing and then went back over the material to try and make it better. It was the best experience I have had in a studio,” says Simon.

It’s hard to believe that this vivacious and confident stage performer started off as a music loving, but painfully shy young gal from Stettler. She surrounded herself with song, but never thought it would become a vocation.

“My grandparents were in a local dance band that played at all the community halls and events in the area; and, my parents also played in a band. Every family get-together meant singalongs where everyone had to get up and do their own little number. So, I was surrounded by music and always encouraged to play and sing,” she said.

12 graduation ceremony — a moment that forever changed her life. “I was petrified - my body was shaking uncontrollably,” she recalled with a laugh.

She sang Mariah Carey’s Hero.

“But I’m glad I did it, because it made me get the ‘bug’ for music.”

“After that performance so many people complimented me and I knew this was what I wanted to do. Something just went ‘click’ and from then on I have devoted myself to my music.”

Simon has shared the concert and festival stage with the likes of Aaron Pritchett, Patricia Conroy, Wendell Ferguson, and

Gord Bamford. She has also used her talent and time to support many causes — most commonly ones involving emergency services and first responders, since her husband is a professional firefighter for the City of Edmonton.

All of this musical experience, along with her life as a wife and mom, adds an authenticity and depth to her original songs.

“My kids fortunately love music, and my daughter also sings with us quite a bit, too.”

Listening to Mirror will leave listeners with no doubt as to Simon’s songwriting strengths.

ten by students from her education program, which is called Songbirds. For Simon, reaching out to youth with a positive, encouraging message is also very important.

“We started talking about the things going on in their lives — about self-confidence, having low self-esteem, and the number of teen suicides that happen. So we decided to write a song that says, ‘Yes, you look at yourself differently than everybody else does, but you have to realize that nobody is perfect and that you are amazing as you are. CAT gears up for Gladys in Wonderland

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Central Alberta Theatre’s next dinner theatre production, Gladys in Wonderland, opens Jan. 15th at the Quality Inn North Hill.

Penned by Rosemary Frisino Toohey and directed by CAT veteran Erna Soderberg, the play runs through to Feb. 6th. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with buffet at 6 p.m. and curtain at 7:30 p.m.

For Sunday brunch, doors open at 11:30 a.m. with curtain at 1:30 p.m.

According to the synopsis, the story follows an 87-year-old lady by the name of Gladys, whose days of ‘munching donuts and scouring the obituaries seem numbered when death himself comes knocking on her door one morning’.

Ready to whisk her off into the great unknown, her cheerful grim reaper is startled by Gladys’ stubborn refusal to expire.

In order to push Gladys toward the light, he ushers in a parade of obnoxious friends and relatives

who nitpick and whine. He also gives her a taste of nursing home life from an inmate’s point of view.

Suddenly, the afterlife doesn’t look so bad.

Cynthia Edwards, a frequently featured actor in CAT shows over the years, has taken on the central role of Gladys with superb results, explained Soderberg, adding the play has a fairly sizable cast of 11.

As for the character of Gladys, Soderberg explains her circle of family and friends are really starting to worry about her with her advancing age and all.

“As we get older, we change.

We change in looks. We change in what we care about and what keeps us busy and what interests us. And we let go of some of that stuff that we have always carried with us,” she said. “Gladys is having fun - eating all of the donuts she can possibly eat. She doesn’t really care what she looks like.”

But people start getting concerned - and it’s not always exactly welcome.

This is also when the Angel of Death pops in, played by another

“Her daughter is worried about her, her best friend is worried about her and her brother is worried about her.

“And all of their family and friends start to visit her, and they

are the most annoying bunch of people. To anybody they would be annoying, let alone to a self-sufficient, elderly woman who has a mind of her own.”

During all of this, the Angel of Death is hanging around observing, and later discusses with Gladys the silliness of the various behaviours being shown.

Meanwhile, playwright Frisino Toohey has written 40 plays and had more than 160 productions in the U.S., Canada, Europe and New Zealand.

According to her bio, while playwriting is now her passion and her art, she came to theatre only after a successful career in radio news.

After graduating from the College of Notre Dame, she started at WETT in Ocean City, moved on to WITH in Baltimore, KLOK in San Jose, California and WHDH in Boston.

She then joined NBC’s allnews radio network ‘NIS’ at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, where she met her husband Bill.

When NIS foundered, she went to

news-talk WMCA, and then began anchoring at all-news 1010 WINS in New York.

By early 1998, she had completed her first full-length play, Gladys in Wonderland.

For Soderberg, who is also a wonderful actor in her own right, being a director is becoming increasingly compelling and satisfying. “I love acting, but this directing thing is also pretty satisfying when you see the results. All the work that’s done and poof - there they are onstage.”

And for Gladys, she’s also got herself a great mix of folks - from experienced actors to newcomers to the stage to some who have acted but haven’t been in a production for some time.

It’s proven to be a fun, creatively-rich season of pulling a production together.

“It’s been so fun - everybody is really excited about being a part of it and working really hard.”

The Hearts of Women have once again taken on the organizing of the film festival as part of their own desire to advocate the understanding of social justice issues in a way that may inspire taking responsibility and positive action.

Things kick off Friday night with The Human Scale at 6 p.m. and Racing to Zero: In Pursuit of Zero Waste at 8:15 p.m.

Directed by Christopher Beaver, Racing to Zero: In Pursuit of Zero Waste is about how the simple substitution of the word ‘resource’ for the word ‘garbage’ transformed a culture, produced a wealth of new industries and revealed an intriguing and surprising race to zero.

Saturday morning highlights include the African Grandmothers Tribunal at 11 a.m. followed by (Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies, directed by Yael Melamede, at 12:30 p.m.

(Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies is described as a comical and light-hearted film that follows award winning behavioral scientist Dan Ariely as he strives to understand the reasons behind our deceiving behavior and the implications of our dishonesty.

In the Shadow of War will be screened at 2:15 p.m. followed by Not Without Us at

4:15 p.m.

Not Without Us is described as a thought-provoking and emotionally stirring film that examines what happens when a group of individuals with mental illness, often portrayed as a problem to be solved by society, bands together to stand up for their rights by redefining the nature of the problem and reclaiming their status as integral members of society.

Directed by Sam Avery, the film is also making its Canadian premiere.

In a highly disturbing investigation of the organ harvesting trade in China, Nobel Peace Prize nominees David Matas and David Kilgour uncover one of the

world’s worst crimes against humanity in the film Human Harvest which was directed by Leon Lee. Human Harvest will be featured at 5:15 p.m.

That Sugar Film hits the screen at 7 p.m. and rounding out the day will be IMBA Means Sing at 8:45 p.m. Audiences can follow Angel, Moses and Nina from the slums of Kampala, Uganda through a world tour with the Grammy-nominated African Children’s Choir.

Directed by Danielle Bernstein, IMBA Means Sing is a intimate story of resilience and the impact of education.

Coronation author holds book signing this weekend

BY MARK WEBER RED DEER EXPRESS Alberta author of Seven to Seventy: A Journey through Time Lavera Goodeye is launching a series of book signings, the first of which will be held at the Coles at Parkland Mall on Jan. 16th between noon and 5 p.m.

Goodeye’s memoir, an insight into her own life and the relationships that reflected her own journey to become who she is offers readers a portrait of her struggle, and how with care and support it is possible to find the light.

Along the way, she also discovered a talent for helping others to improve their self-esteem and competency while learning to deal with loss. That came through not just writing, but further education and engagement with the community on several fronts.

“It was in 2008 that I sat down and got really serious about writing it,” she said of the book, which essentially chronicles her life’s journey.

Goodeye, who today calls Coronation home, begins by relating how her grandparents immigrated to homesteads on the Alberta prairie before trains provided transportation.

Her parents met and married during the drought and depression of the 30s. She and her two sisters were born during World War II. Sadly, religious turmoil, mental illness and tragic loss to suicide were all part of her young life. But she persevered, grew up and eventually established a family of four sons. Her mother had taken her life when Goodeye was just

seven, and her husband passed away in his early 40s.

“She had been in the mental hospital for a whole year,” she recalls of her mom. “And she had been taken away when I was three.”

And although she was very young at the time of her mother’s death, she has very clear memories of her. “I was lucky enough to spend probably a year or two with her after she got out of the mental hospital.”

Goodeye would eventually marry again and would later create a business around the skills of her troubled second husband, who passed away in the mid-1980s.

She then hoped another degree would allow her to do development work, only to have those hopes dashed. Even so, she found new ways to pursue her mission to help others improve their lives.

“I was using my experience to work with people in the areas of being a support worker in the north, and also doing upgrading with native people. I also knew that mental health was really something that in the rural areas we have trouble getting help for,” she said. “So in my process, I read many books that helped me to get over the grief and the loss and to understand suicide. I wanted people to read my story and to gain, as I had gained from others.”

Penning her own experience has also opened all kinds of doors to connecting with others over these very issues. She has found that writing about her life has brought a strong sense of healing as well. Not that

the process was always particularly easy.

“There was some pain.

I expected to have some sadness as it was going along, but I think I had more sadness when it was completed,” she said. “I was disappointed at that point that I didn’t have the computer to go to everyday.”

But through it all, there were a multitude of personal benefits. One of the key ones was a restoration of faith.

“Through the process of these four years that I was writing, I was going to church. And I started by sitting in the back pew and crying through the songs that I had enjoyed as a child.

“I really found my way back to faith, and I’m now a big part of the church community here in Coronation - the United Church. It was a real plus that I wasn’t expecting.”

Although the book was and is a stepping stone to helping others through her example, Goodeye will also be hosting workshops and healing circles later in the month as an extension of the kind of support that she can provide to people trying to overcome their own issues. She loves to chat with folks who drop by a reading or a signing, and finds it fulfilling to hear of their experiences as well.

“A lot of times, I think it’s kind of a private experience with the reader,” she explained of the book’s impact. “They feel really close to me while they are reading it.”

Ensuring it had an accessible style was also paramount. That dedication has indeed made it

an effective tool to reach others.

Making your life better by sticking to resolutions Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it’s time to deal with it.

It’s everywhere you look right now and people either can’t stand hearing about it or love the conversation. No matter where you are on the spectrum New Year’s resolutions have a place.

Why do they even exist? What’s the big deal? Why New Year’s? Because it’s a clean slate. It’s a new start. It’s a chance to change.

The thing is, you could make a resolution any time - summer, fall, Easter, Halloween, it doesn’t matter. The fact is that the turning over of the New Year brings hope to people.

It’s a chance to change and start fresh. It also happens to follow a month of indulgence and parties, which can lead people to rebound back to structure and sanity.

And that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Often at the start of a New Year, I will engage in an herbal cleanse from the local health food store to get my system back in line after several weeks of indulging in all of the tasty little treats I usually don’t have.

Then for me, like a lot of people, it’s time to get serious about my fitness. January is when I get focused about my goals for the year, and usually I pick out all of my races and register for them, if I have not done so already. You could say that each race, is

McDERMOTT a resolution. By registering for the race, I resolve to be ready for that race. That sets in motion hundreds of hours of training, commitments, restrictions, dedication, and many, many more things.

That is all resolutions are - goals. It is a chance for you to say publicly or privately, “I have a goal, and I am going to change myself for the better.” Because it’s worth it. Not because you’re trying to impress anyone, or get attention, or try to follow everyone else around. It’s because you, as a human being, have a desire to be better.

And that is awesome!

I love resolutions. I think they are absolutely fantastic, and I set them all year long and especially at this time. I actually build dream boards, where I take magazines and tear out images of things that I like, and I stick them to a large piece of cardboard and post it on my wall. Sometimes I hardly look at the vision board for the year, but almost always, I am stunned at the end of

the year by how many things have come true. You’re really just quietly giving the subconscious part of your brain a target to shoot at. You may not be thinking about it on a daily basis, but somewhere in the dark recesses of your mind, gears are turning and things are in place. That is the power of setting goals, and making resolutions.

On the more public and social side of resolutions, most people fail, because they set weak resolutions that are not specific or not attainable. “I resolve to be more fit”. Great, go do five push-ups. Resolution complete. You are now more fit than you were 30 seconds ago. I don’t think that’s what you meant, but with a resolution so vague, you really need to be open to accepting any sort of result. If you really want a fitness resolution, make something very specific. “I resolve to do everything I can to drop 20 lbs. in the next three months. To accomplish this task, I will (join the gym, join a volleyball team, register for a Spartan race, or whatever it is you want to do to get you there).” The point is, you have to be specific, and you have to have action steps in place that are tangible and real.

“This year I resolve to have more money.”

Great! How are you going to do that? You have to build a plan. Get a second job, work more hours, take an online course and

get a raise, start selling something else, etc. You have to put something in place that will make the resolution happen, otherwise you’re just wasting your time like everyone else.

“This year I resolve to quit smoking.”

Fantastic! How? If you tried to quit cold turkey on the first Monday of January or whatever date you set, then the first time you have a cigarette, you have failed and your resolution is over. Don’t do that.

Instead, make a resolution to have a large glass of water before every cigarette you smoke. Now you have put a good habit in place, and after eight or nine glasses of water a day, you will not want another cigarette. (Plus all that water is good for flushing out toxins.) You will be reprogramming your basic brain function to not desire that cigarette after a while. It might take one, two or three months, but you will reduce your cigarette consumption to the point where quitting will be a lot easier.

So grab a resolution, and make your life better. It’s the only thing you can control.

Don’t waste this chance because a lot of people think resolutions are stupid. You know better.

Potassium is just like sex and money Can you have too much of anything these days?

Surely, by now, you know that you can get too much sugar, too much salt and too many calories, to name a few things. But you can also get into trouble by getting too little of some nutrients. So this week, here’s why potassium is so like sex and money.

Paul Whelton, Professor of Epidemiology at Tulane School of Public Health in New Orleans, is an expert on hypertension. He reports good news in the Nutrition Action Health Letter for those who love to add salt to their food.

He claims good evidence shows that consuming enough potassium may counter the effect of excess salt on blood pressure.

In 1997 Whelton combined the research of 29 studies that had randomly selected people who got high or low levels of potassium, primarily from supplements. The result? He discovered a three to fivepoint reduction in blood pressure in those who had taken a normal potassium

But those who received from 3,500 milligrams (mgs) to 4,700 mg daily in their diet showed a drop of seven points. As Whelton says, “That’s not to be sneezed at as it resulted in a 30 percent decreased risk of stroke.”

The other significant finding was that potassium had the greatest effect on patients who needed it the most, namely, people with the highest blood pressure, the elderly, and others who were eating a lot of salt.

Dr. Deborah Green, a researcher at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, followed 5,888 men and women ages 65 and over for eight years. She discovered that those with low levels of potassium were twice as

likely to suffer a stroke due to a blood clot.

There’s more worrying news. One of the risks of getting older is an irregular heart rate called auricular fibrillation. Patients who suffer from this condition, who are also taking diuretics (water pills) and have low blood potassium, face 10 times the risk of a stroke compared to those who have normal heart rhythm , no need for diuretics and normal potassium.

So getting enough potassium from food is the ideal way to obtain this mineral. Whelton says that getting it from supplements is safe as long as you consult your doctor.

This is because patients with kidney disease can get too much potassium.

And some drugs can interfere with the excretion of potassium.

Bess Dawson-Hughes, director of the Bone Metabolism Laboratory at the Human Nutrition Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston is an authority on potassium.

She reports that potassi-

um can also help to prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones).

Hughes explains that potassium rich foods generate alkali and that bone is the great reservoir for the storage of alkali. Alkali is needed to counteract acid produced by protein rich foods such as meat, poultry, fish or dairy products.

She adds that if the body gets more acid than it can excrete, it breaks down bone to add alkali to the system. If this situation continues over a long period of time, bone loss can lead to osteoporosis and fractures.

The article in Nutrition Action reminded me of a column I’d written years ago about Dr. David Young, Professor of Physiology at the University of Mississippi. He hit a home run when he said, “Potassium is like sex and money. You can never get too much!”

This is good news for me.

Thank God, there are more ways to consume potassium than eating a cup of spinach. I’d die for roast beef and potatoes, both loaded with potassium, especially when you eat the skin of the potato.

You can also get 1,200 mil-

ligrams of potassium by drinking three glasses of milk. A banana contains 450 mg and there’s potassium in citrus fruits, nuts and green leafy vegetables.

So there’s a message to all as we start 2016. While there is so much strife in this world, this is a good time to make love and money, not war.

And don’t forget the benefits of potassium.

AHS currently contracts Associated Ambulance to operate 37 ambulances in 17 communities in the North and Central zones. The company was awarded the additional $695,000 contract following a request for expression of interest and qualifications issued in February 2015.

The Downtown Business Association has been operating in Red Deer for over 30 years, serving approximately 500 business owners in the downtown area. Local ringette teams fare well in tournament

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS It was a very successful weekend for Red Deer’s ringette teams.

Red Deer Ringette hosted the 32nd annual Baymont Friends on Ice tournament in the City over the weekend, as teams from all over the province flocked to the City to compete.

“It was great. A bunch of our teams made the finals and really only two made gold but several made silver,” said Tournament Coordinator Pam Jones.

This is Jones’ fourth year as the tournament chair.

The tournament featured 63 teams ranging in age groups from U6 all the way up to the Open level, which is for players over the age of 19.

“It’s a lot of organizing. We have a lot of parent volunteers from every team that step up and help us with some organization and getting our baskets and raffle tables and decorating,” Jones said, adding that parents also volunteered to help out throughout the weekend to make the tournament a success.

“A big thank you to all our parents and our volunteers and our committee. It wouldn’t be a tournament or successful at all without all of them.”

Red Deer was represented by 19 teams across all 13 divisions at the three day long tournament, which took place at the Kinsmen, Dawe, Kinex and Collicutt Centre. Of those 19 teams, three came away with a gold medal while another four took home silver.

“The weekend went really well. We ended up playing three games in the round robin, we won three of those,” said Greg Swenson, head coach of the gold medal winning U12B Red Deer Rath.

The Rath had a great weekend, going undefeated in round robin play with victories over the Airdrie Sting, Calgary Ice Breakers and the Saskatoon Galaxy before defeating the Ice Breakers 8-7 in the Sunday morning final to clinch the medal.

“I was really happy about the way the girls played,” Swenson said, adding the team’s goaltenders, Piper Liska and Camryn Jackson, played well throughout the weekend.

Another Red Deer team that found success was the U14A Red Deer Ricochet.

After getting off to a good start to the weekend with an 8-2 win over the Edmonton Impact, the Ricochet met their

“The weekend went well, the girls played really hard. They played together and played some of our best games of the year,” said Coach Darcy Brown.

Despite the setback, the Ricochet managed to bounce back on Saturday, earning a 4-1 decision over the Calgary NW Virta in a do-or-die game to clinch their spot in the finals and book their rematch with the Crossfire.

“The girls were a little nervous but also excited to make the final because they were guaranteed a medal either way.”

Sunday’s 9:30 a.m. game was a hard fought battle. Going into the second half the Crossfire held a 3-2 lead.

But the Ricochet would not be beat.

They clawed their way back to tie the game and keep it there until the final two minutes when, with one final push, the Ricochet scored to clinch the 5-4 victory.

“We were really proud of their effort and it’s a really good life lesson for the girls,” Brown said, adding the team really came together to win the game.

The third and final Red Deer team to bring home first place was the Open D Red Deer Confusion, who earned five straight victories and scored a total of 43 goals in the process.

Hurricanes, the U10 step 3 Red Deer Ring Rulers, the U12A Red Deer Whiplash, and the U14B Red Deer Riptide, who came incredibly close to winning the final game against the Airdrie Sting.

After going into the second period down by two goals, the Riptide mounted a comeback to tie the game in the final 10 minutes and force a five minute overtime period.

They couldn’t quite complete the comeback, though, as Airdrie scored to clinch the 7-6 win.

“That was a hard fought battle,” said Jones, whose daughter plays on the team.

In the end, she said, a good tournament was had by all.

A bizarre twist for this year’s NHL All-Star game I love hockey fans.

They’re among the most fun and passionate fans in all of sports, especially here in Canada. Rivalries burn fierce and many fan bases just flat-out don’t like each other, making attending hockey games that much more entertaining But perhaps my favourite thing about hockey fans, and NHL fans specifically, is that we’re not above collectively kicking back and having a little bit of fun, mostly at the expense of each other, but sometimes at the expense of the NHL itself.

Enter John Scott, a 33-year-old enforcer for the Arizona Coyotes who has managed just five goals and six assists in 285 career NHL games.

He’s also, the league announced last week, the captain of the Pacific Division team at this year’s NHL All-Star game.

Why? Because the fans put him there.

Yeah, Scott won the NHL’s All-Star fan ballot thanks to a huge organized movement of people who voted for him as a kind of collective joke, and possibly a little bit of a protest of the All-Star Game’s overall silliness.

This is why I love hockey fans.

As I have said in a previous column, I think the NHL All-Star game is a joke. It’s a boring hockey game played by players who seriously just don’t want to be there. And now, with the introduction of a 3-on-3 tournament, the weekend is shaping up to be a total sideshow.

CORMIER So the fans decided to take it to another level, electing Scott, who has racked up a total of 542 penalty minutes and a -18 plus-minus rating over nine NHL seasons, to play in a showcase of the league’s brightest stars.

It’s also worth noting that the Edmonton native has never played a complete NHL season and has spent most of the current one as a healthy scratch for the Coyotes.

I mean, the Coyotes waived him mid-way through December when he was number-one in the league for voting, and then he was scratched the day after being named the captain of an All-Star team.

The guy’s not exactly Jaromir Jagr. (Incidentally, Jagr, the Atlantic Division captain, made some pretty hilarious comments about the whole situation on his Twitter feed, @68Jagr. You should go check them out.)

Now, if you’ve been following this story at all you’ll probably be aware that there has been a lot of negative backlash, especially among sports media, to the fans’ decision to vote for Scott, to the NHL’s decision to allow him to participate, and to Scott’s acceptance of the invitation.

When it came out that

Scott was surging in the fan vote at the start of December, a number of hockey analysts made calls on Scott to step down and remove himself from the race.

“If I’m John Scott I’d get my name off that list as fast as I could,” Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos on a Dec. 2nd edition of Hockey Central.

“It’s making a farce of the whole thing. Take it away from the fans if they’re going to be such idiots,” Doug McLean chimed in a second later.

That’s kind of harsh, don’t you think? I mean, isn’t that kind of the point of fan balloting?

To allow underrated players that would otherwise fly under the radar to make it into a game that is dominated by high-scoring high-profile superstars? To give players who might actually want to be there a shot a making it?

And Scott, to his credit, seems like a really nice guy who kind of deserves a chance to be in the spotlight after grinding as a fourth-liner his entire career. And the fans are giving that chance to him.

A final curtain-call for a dying breed of hockey player. One who makes his presence felt more with his fists and body than with his goal-scoring prowess.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” he told AZCentral in December.

“I just kind of stay out of it. The guys are giving me a hard time about it, but it’s kind of neat. The fans, they obviously like me for some reason.”

What I really appreciate about this whole situation is the fact that the NHL is letting it happen.

Remember, this is the league that is considering pulling their players out of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang despite nearly-overwhelming fan disapproval.

They’re not exactly known for listening to the fan base on internal matters, especially when it comes to the All-Star Game.

So the fact that they stepped back and allowed an enforcer who has only played 11 games this season to participate in a game designed to pit the Alex Ovechkins and

Patrick Kanes of the world against each other is a little baffling to me.

Then I had a thought: this is the NHL saying, ‘Look, we’re making a concerted (if misguided) effort to make this game better for you to watch. So if you, the fans, tell us you want to see a nice guy with just five goals in his entire career in this tournament, then by all means he’ll play. But don’t look at us when this year turns out to be even worse than previous years.’

But, of course, they pretty much immediately backed down from that notion as well, as last week they announced that, in light of the Scott

situation, they would be would be making changes to the fan-vote format next season. And while they haven’t said what those proposed changes might be, general speculation is that the league could be considering giving fans only a partial vote or limiting them to a shortlist of players instead of allowing them to vote for any player they want to.

And to be honest, I don’t care right now. Because this will be the first time I will watch the All-Star game in the past two years. And, for once, I know exactly who I’ll be cheering for.

Many headlines are oversimplifying and inaccurate. The change is not as simple, nor as painful, as a jump to 10% down on homes over 500K — this is not the correct math at all.

It is a sliding-scale increase, meaning that the extra dollars required rise gradually (i.e., a $675,000 home now requires a down payment of $42,500 or ~ 6.3% down — NOT 10%).

As such, the impact on markets is expected to also be gradual and marginal, save for possibly Calgary where an already cooling market needs anything but further restrictions.

One might ask why further restrictions for prime borrowers are required at all in a nation with historically (and consistently) low arrears rates. Mortgage arrears rates have come down from their ‘high’ of 0.43% in 2009 to a current 0.29%.

The answer is, in a word, optics.

There is an undeniable statistical link between the amount of equity homeowners have in a property and those same homeowners’ likelihood of falling into arrears or foreclosure.

More equity = less risk. The optics

TURCOTTE of this change appear as good governing. This looks like an effort to moderate rapidly rising prices in the two largest markets (Toronto and Vancouver) and increase stability.

This regulatory change also has a net effect similar to a subtle increase in interest rates from the Bank of Canada.

which affect the entire economy, not just real estate.

Moving interest rates is simply too big a macro-economic lever to lean on in an effort to slow, or lower, home prices in just two cities of the nation.

This brings us to U.S.A.’s decision to hike their own interest rates by 0.25%, a first in nine long years.

There is much fanfare around this being a signal that the U.S. economy is resilient and recovering. Perhaps so, but the increase itself is marginal and it will be the quantity and pace at which any further hikes are introduced that will tell the entire story.

Interestingly, this move acts for the Bank of Canada as a de facto rate cut here.

It will further soften the Canadian dollar against the U.S. Arguably, this will lower the chances of the Bank of Canada reducing Prime at their next meeting.

Economists are still predicting no movement in the Canadian prime lending rate for 2016.

In other words, no action on CDN interest rates is expected in either direction anytime soon.
