Council dissects proposed 2016 budget

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey town council is now in the budget process and has plans to rubber stamp the 2016 budget in February.

Acting CAO Donna Tona said there was no new assessment in 2015.

“We didn’t grow,” she said. “It is good that the assessment did not decrease, but it did not increase either.”

A zero increase in the residential and commercial tax base means council has to be innovative in ensuring tax dollars are used wisely and efficiently, Tona said.

“You can’t do more with less. We need to think in terms of services levels, not money.”

On Dec. 21 the town passed an interim budget which was put in place until this year’s budget is given the green light.

The interim budget is the same as last year’s $6 million budget.

As interim CAO Dona Tona’s salary for a threeday work week is $76,000.

Tona works on a contract basis.

Last year the mayor’s income was $19,800 and councillors’ salaries averaged $13,623. The deputy mayor’s income was $14,823.

Council met on Saturday to discuss some major budget concerns which will, no doubt, affect the upcoming budget.

Composting is one issue that needs to be put under the microscope, said Tona.

She said the town is only recovering 4.33 per cent of composting costs.

“It is costing us $28,000 to pick up composting and we only have 30 customers,” she said. “That tells me the majority of the town residents are either grass recycling, self composting or taking it to the transfer station.”

The future of the splash park also needs to be addressed, said Tona.

The town shells out $258,000 to run the aquatic centre and recoups only 29.9 per cent of those expenses.

“The splash park has not worked properly since day one,” she said. “We have to decide what we are going to do with it.”

Tona is pleased with the town’s snow removal policy although she admits there has been little snowfall this year to test it out.

However, she noted that using the town’s new snow blower to its full capacity has proved to be efficient.

“Town crews have been working at night to ensure the snow is managed this year. Using the snow blower is a cheaper and more efficient method or sure.”

Also up for discussion is a proposed $4 million capital budget.

Digging a new water well and a related study accounts for $2.2 million, although those dollars

could be recouped through a provincial grant.

Tona said the reason for the new well was determined last year when a study of well 13 proved there could be some future concerns with the aquifer.

“We are not prepared to take chances with the town’s drinking water,” said Tona. “We need to go ahead with a new well and if the grant does not come through, we will need to borrow the money.”

Other projected capital expenses include a new mower and sidewalk snow cleaning tractor for $118,000, air conditioning for the public works office, maintenance for the zamboni, a wheelchair ramp in the arena and a new roof for the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.

Upgrades to the main water reservoir pump house, waste water composite samplers and a new tandem truck, sidewalk replacement and repairs to the RCMP building are also included in the proposed capital budget.

Unfortunately, the price of oil is not one of them.

However, I have noticed that even as the needle hovering over the price of oil remains fairly steady on ‘low’, dropping only slightly to ‘really low’, some things stay the same.

The sun still rises in the east. The days are getting longer. And, Toronto Maple Leafs, no matter if they win or lose, will have loyal fans such as myself forever.

And as there has been in the past and there will be in the future, there are two camps of people; eternal pessimists and eternal

removal is non-existent (and not because we have had minimal snowfall) and mail delivery is slower than watching paint dry, no one will stop you.

But, guess what? Nothing changes, life goes on.

I do believe when the price of oil is low and Albertans are facing layoffs and an economic downturn, it is time for all of us to become innovative and creative and not waste even one moment of time whining about it.

A few months ago, the majority of Albertans exercised their democratic right and voted in the NDP government, and not by just a little bit, but by a landslide.

Whining and crying over the way government in power is making decisions now is a little bit like crying over spilled milk.

We need to get over it.

I was raised in the ‘50s and ‘60s by a single dad. In those days it was a Social Credit government here in

good old rural Alberta.

But, it didn’t make a lot of difference to us.

We were poor, actually, some would say we were dirt poor.

I didn’t really feel poor, although I’m not exactly sure how a poor kid is supposed to feel. I just kind of knew it.

We didn’t talk about it much, but I’m quite sure that if the price of oil had risen to a hundred dollars a barrel, we would have still been poor.

My dad sold insurance to farmers, often bent over the rim of a tire tractor to write up the policy. His finesse as a salesman kept bread on the table and allowed us to stock up on sardines. We ate a lot of sardines, it seemed.

It also gave him time to hunt for all the misplaced Bambis out there and always it seemed there was at least one who was not fortunate enough to dodge a speeding bullet and met his demise.

In the summer he fished.

I didn’t really like fishing, but I liked my dad and I liked hanging out with him.

I remember him; the way the skin around his blue eyes crinkled in the corners and the way he tucked his violin under his chin when he was about to play a tune.

And I do know that to this day I’m grateful for those memories and I’m also grateful that my happiness has never been solely based on how the wheel of economic fortune spins in my world.

That being said, the present reality does not paint a bright economic picture for many Albertans right now.

And my heart goes out to those individuals who have been given their pink slips, many with very little notice.

But, realistically speaking, nothing is as permanent as change, whether it is good or bad.

And, necessity truly is the mother of invention and creativity!

Rock ‘n roll musician remembered

Sometimes the pessimists will invade the optimists’ camp and take great delight in shooting off their little ‘ain’t it awful’ arrows of doom and gloom.

Pessimists always seem to know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody else who knows stuff the rest of us wonder about, but don’t know for sure.

And they also know people who have told them, probably with their right hand on the Bible, that things are only going to get worse. And to make matters worse it seems their circle of acquaintances seem to only include people who have been laid off, are about to be laid off, or never even got hired in the first place to get laid off.

Ain’t it awful.

While I agree entirely that Alberta is a boom and bust province where the streets and the roads are paved with black gold in the boom days, I refuse to believe that Albertans must succumb to a self-destructive world of ‘ain’t it awful’.

If you want to cry about how taxes go up and snow

An old co-worker and friend has spent tens of thousands of dollars on stereo technology to listen to old vinyl albums. I’m not quite that hard core about my stereo. I do, however, have a pretty decent array of equipment for blasting out tunes at home. I’ve put in serious amounts of time

in front of the speakers listening to the big names of music (I’m sure by now my neighbours have pulled out a lot of their hair).

My own musical taste includes many of the classic rock’n’roll artists. My coffee table usually has an array of CDs scattered about. Some albums get listened to every once and awhile when a certain mood descends my spirits; others only come out on the weekends; and some never get put away.

Elvis performed a lot of good tunes; so did Chuck Berry, Little Richard and The Beatles. That list is epic in its own right, but it also leaves out many eminent musicians that have transformed millions of rock’n’roll fans.

I seem to think that after a passing glance, my ex-

terior appearance would reveal that I’m a fan of Motörhead. Band inspired tattoos and a black denim vest with logo patches gives that trivia answer away.

The artists and groups I’ve listened to have changed many times throughout my teenage and young adult life, but my love for Motörhead has been kept up with the same enthusiasm I experienced when I first listened to the Ace of Spades album.

Listening to Motörhead is like eating haggis: it’s not for everyone. The lyrics, instrumental styling, and Lemmy’s Marlboro infused voice mash together to form music that has blown a few sets of my speakers— the same speakers that Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and The Beatles get played through.

Any work by a modern philosopher can be spiralled back to the great thinkers: Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato. A little bit of research shows that Lemmy’s musical influences are attributed to the great rock’n’roll musicians that came before him. Just like how my copies of Joyce, Steinbeck, and Palahniuk sit among my philosophy textbooks, my Motörhead CDs get stacked with the great rock’n’roll albums I listen to.

You don’t have to take a philosophical stroll through the courtyard of an Athenian academy to have been influenced by Plato, nor do you have to stand in front of flood lights, Marshall Amplifiers, and a stage to be influenced by Motörhead (but it helps).

There is an argument out there claiming rock’n’roll hasn’t been the same since Buddy Holly died. I simply think that the influence of music has spread and swelled to create genres upon genres of new listening pleasure. The literary impacts from the first thinkers and writers keep propagating new prose; and the shudders from Lemmy’s Rickenbacker bass guitar will reverberate through impressionable new musicians.

On December 28, 2015 Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister died of an aggressive cancer. He was the front man of Motörhead and he liked to play rock’n’roll.

Philosophers have their rhetoric and musicians have their lyrics.

Immortality comes to very few.

Libraries challenge Alberta communities to Readfor15 SUBMITTED Libraries across Alberta are reaching out to encourage citizens to read for 15 minutes on January 27 to win the title of Alberta’s most ‘readerly’ community for Family Literacy Day. Rimbey Municipal Library has joined the Read for 15 challenge and the goal is promote the importance of literacy in the community.

Literacy skills are put into practice daily and include such activities as reading grocery lists, your Facebook news feed, the local paper, a book, traffic signs, maps, or even a restaurant menu. Continuously flexing your reading muscles has been proven to reduce stress, expand vocabulary, improve memory, focus and concentration, and develop deep analytical thinking. It’s a rewarding recreational activity too.

The library aims to create enthusiasm about reading for youth and adults alike and we encourage friendly competition between communities, businesses, or public services to help spread the word about the challenge and the importance of reading.

Participation is easy. After you finish your 15 minutes of reading your chosen material, let the library know using Facebook (post to our page), Twitter (#Readfor15ari), email, phone, or stop by the library and we’ll make sure your reading is added to the tally. Moose shot illegally in Wetaskiwin County SUBMITTED The Wetaskiwin Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch is asking for the public’s help regarding the illegal harvest of a moose in Wetaskiwin County.

The incident occurred west of Battle Lake in the area of Range Road 24 and Highway 13, sometime between Dec. 28 and 31. It is believed that a moose was shot on the property, and a vehicle was then used to access the property to retrieve the animal, becom-

ing stuck several times only a short distance from Highway 13.

If anyone observed any suspicious activity in the area of Hwy. 13 and Range Road 24 between December 28 and 31, or have any other information regarding this incident please contact the Wetaskiwin Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch, or the Report-APoacher number at 1-800642-3800. New EMS resources installed to improve care in Central Zone RED DEER – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is adding new resources in the Central Zone to help free up ambulances to respond to emergencies.

AHS has signed an agreement with Associated Ambulance to provide non-ambulance transport (NAT) service, which began January 4.

Two wheelchair-equipped vans and one stretcher-capable multi-patient vehicle will be based in Sylvan Lake and are expected to move nearly 1,400 patients to facilities within 100 kilometres of Red Deer during the first year of operation.

“Basic patient transfers do not always require the skills of highly-trained paramedics,” says EMS Senior Program Director and Chief Paramedic, Darren Sandbeck. “While some patients do require advanced care during travel, stable patients can be safely moved by non-ambulance transport vehicles, which frees up other ambulances to respond to emergencies.”

In 2015, NAT resources transported more than 12,500 patients in the North, Edmonton, Calgary and South zones of AHS, helping to keep EMS ambulances available for urgent and emergency responses.

AHS currently contracts Associated Ambulance to operate 37 ambulances in 17 communities in the North and Central zones. The company was awarded the additional $695,000 contract following a request for expression of interest and qualifications issued in February 2015.

Concern voiced about people who park on crosswalks Dear Editor, I am voicing a complaint against people who park on the crosswalk and don’t seem to care. It makes me angry.

No one should park near the crossing sign of the crosswalk as it is dangerous for pedestrians such as myself who walk downtown every day. It is not fair for us to wait for those drivers to get off the crosswalk.

Tiny Mites tournament attracts six teams SUBMITTED Nordstrom Dental Tiny Mites head coach Shayne Ledieu said he is thankful for all the sponsors and volunteers who played a role in the Tiny Mites Hockey Tournament held last weekend.

“With the generous sponsorships we were able to have a six-team tournament which included two teams from Sylvan Lake and one team from Okotoks, Eckville and Josephburg.”

During the tournament each team had three round robin games. “We awarded two Heart and Hustle rewards to each team for all nine games and provided every player with a player

gift and a medallion acknowledging their participation,” he said.

The Nordstrom Dental Rimbey Renegades Tiny Mite team has a good mix of players this year of first and second year Tiny Mites and they are all very enthusiastic about playing hockey.

Ledieu also thanked all the volunteers (Rimbey Minor Hockey Board Members and Parents) for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and during this tournament.

“The players and coaching staff really appreciate everything you do behind the scenes so we can just play hockey,” he said.

Cutter parade plans underway

BY TREENA MIELKE The Rimbey Sleigh, Wagon and Saddle Club is gearing up for its 24th annual cutter parade and silent auction.

The cutter parade is to take place on Sat., Feb. 6 at the Rimbey Agricultural Society grounds and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

The event is open to everyone and there is no admission cost. All participants are provided with free food.

“It’s old-time horse fun for everyone that reminds us of our proud history of working horses,” said club president Denise McFarlene. “It helps keep the tradition of teamsters alive.”

Along with the cutter parade is a silent auction,

which is the club’s major fundraiser for the year.

Donations for the silent auction and cash donations to go towards food, supplies and facility fees would also be greatly appreciated.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation may contact Denise McFarlane at 403-704-4236 or Keith Kendrew at 403-843-3293.

Last year there were 17 entries in the cutter parade. Despite temperatures hovering well below zero, participants seemed to enjoyed the event.

At 87-years-old, Jack Gurnett from Bluffton was the oldest driver, Maria Selder, also from Bluffton was the youngest driver and Shannon Schneider from Stony Plain came the furthest for the parade.

Dennis DeBruiyne from Westerose won the best dressed outfit in last year’s cutter parade. This year’s event will be held on Feb. 6 in the Agricultural Grounds beginning at 1 p.m.

It was a holiday season of Alberta traveling, and left me much to ponder.

Was I as observant as I should have been? Well, that’s what Black Press pays me for.

Looking back to the Christmas pre-game show, it was clear to me in Red Deer this current economy has many people hurting. I prefer Christmas shopping in Red Deer because the city has a wide variety of small, medium and large size stores, and Red Deer is relatively easy to get around in as opposed to, say, Edmonton (Anthony Henday stand-still traffic, LRT sideshow etc.). Mall on the south side of Red Deer is usually one of my favourite stops, despite the fact that, during holiday season, the mall is a three-ring circus; that is, it’s very busy. One year I recall driving around the entire mall parking lot, and couldn’t find a single empty spot.

This year was different.

The mall didn’t seem any different from a usual weekend until you got inside and saw the faux-St. Nick. Wasn’t “wall-to-wall” people walking inside, food court had ample empty tables and the parking lot had plenty of space. The Alberta recession obviously had an effect on holidays shopping this year.

Something else I noticed: the price of everything has gone up. Wrapping paper, decorations and even seashell truffles. Don’t know if you’ve tried those, but they are super-cool, and that comes from someone who doesn’t go crazy over chocolate. Last year seashells were $3 a box. This year they were $5 a box.

That’s a huge hike. I’d like to blame Rachel Notley for that somehow. I’ll get back to you on that.

Getting into the holiday proper now, I had to drive

to Stettler, Oyen, Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer over Christmas and New Years. Lots of hours spent driving main and secondary roads, day and night. I was very disappointed to see lots of people driving while holding a cell phone to their ear, or looking down at their crotches (I’m assuming they were texting on a cell phone). Maybe they don’t know it’s illegal.

The recent stiffened penalties approved by the provincial government must have had some small footnotes that I was unaware of (for example, cell phone use prohibited while driving, unless you’re a guy with a white ball cap turned around backwards and driving a lifted white pick-up truck…then, you’re allowed to talk on your phone). A shame, because this cell phone stuff isn’t like a seatbelt. In my opinion, if you don’t want to wear a seatbelt, that’s your choice. You’re the one who will be crippled or killed. But this cell phone stuff is a threat to other people including pedestrians who get run-over because you’re staring at your phone, or other motorists who get hit head-

on because you’re looking at your phone rather than the road.

One other observation that comes from much night driving recently: lots of people don’t dim their high beams. Okay, look, this is basic highway courtesy. If you, Mr. or Ms. Motorist, can see another vehicle coming (and we can all see the glow on the other side of the hill coming toward us so don’t give me that “I didn’t know” stuff), please dim your high beams. It’s not only the considerate thing to do (do you like getting high beam blasted in your face?), but the safe thing too. And while on Highway #2A, you don’t even need to use your high beams.

There’s too much traffic.

So pretty-please-with-acherry-on-top dim your high beams.

Now looking back I’d say I had a decent holiday and judging by what my friends and family say, they all did too. I hope the same goes for everyone reading this paper. Happy New Year.

The carbon tax idea was dreamed up by Trudeau senior in 1980.

The Bantam Sirrs Law Group Renegades had a successful weekend recently playing in a tournament in Jasper. Over the weekend, the Rimbey team comprised of 13 players and two goalies, came out strong and defeated the Hinton Rockies 3-2 and then the St. Albert Scorpions 5-2 in the first two games, earning them enough points to play in the A-final of the tournament against the home team, the Jasper Bearcats.

The players did not know any of the participating teams, nor the level of hockey to expect. Coaches hope that game play is fairly evenly matched, but competitive enough to challenge the players so as to encourage development.

“This weekend was a big confident booster for our boys,” comments Kevin Coston, the Renegades head coach. “If we can continue to play at this level to finish off our regular season, who knows what might happen.”

The Renegades put up a fight in the A-final, playing the Bearcats who are a Tier 2 team, but coming up short for a 7-2 loss.

Aboriginal people should not be stereotyped Dear Editor, I spent 50 years in the newspaper business as a reporter, editor, and publisher at weeklies and dailies in all four western provinces.

Throughout my career I witnessed up close the disconnect between aboriginal people and the non-native society.

Becoming familiar with aboriginal history, culture and traditions will surely go a long way in helping to bridge the disconnect.

There has been mistrust, anger, suspicion, frustration and fear from both sides toward the other. Positive steps are being taken to narrow the gap but much more needs to be done.

For too long the aboriginal community has been stereotyped by negative stories carried in newspapers, TV, and social media. The stories often focus on protests, confrontations, alcohol and drug abuse, financial scan-

Other disturbing stories include poverty, unemployment, poor drinking water, dilapidated housing, terrible roads, lack of educational opportunities, truancy, child runaways, etc.

But it hasn’t all been negative. There are many aboriginal success stories. Among them: pow wows, rodeo cowboys, accomplished athletes, entrepreneurs, business ventures, artists, lawyers, judges, journalists, musicians, craft makers, politicans, etc.

To improve the relationship between aboriginal people and non-natives, attitudes need to change.

Perry Bellgarde, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, called in June 2015 for people to “make room in your hearts and minds and your spirits. Rid yourself of those racial stereotypes of Indians and indigenous people being dumb and lazy and drunk on welfare. Rid yourself of those things, so new things can come in.”

Chief Bellegarde made the statement in response to the final report and recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The challenge is ours to take.

Well known local reverend and chaplain retires

BY TREENA MIELKE Making a difference, inspiring others through the spoken word, with a friendly smile or offering comfort simply by his presence were acts of compassion and caring that Rev. K. David Holmes did regularly during his long career in the ministry.

Now that Reverend Holmes has retired one can be quite confident he will keep on doing those very things.

“I love people,” he said candidly. “I get my energy from people.”

Rev. Holmes, the former Priest in Charge, Rimbey Anglican Church of the Epiphany and Pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church in Bentley and chaplain of Rimbey Hospital has retired.

He is 77 years-old and he thinks it’s time.

Holmes began his career at the age of 19. He had grown up in Red Deer and his father, Ronald Holmes, owned Holmes Drug Store. The oldest of three children, Holmes could have followed his father’s footsteps and become a pharmacist, but decided, instead, to join the Anglican Church Army.

He spent 17 years in the church army, becoming a captain. After training in Toronto, he worked for six months as a port

chaplain welcoming immigrants coming into Canada.

He then worked with the Anglican Church Army in Manitoba on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. At that time he was responsible for five parishes.

In the early ’60s he moved to Barrhead where he spent two years. During this time frame, he married and he and his wife later adopted three children.

His next move took him to Kamloops, B.C. where he spent several years working for the church army in The Kamloops Christian Hostel. He found the work at the hostel which provided meals and accommodation for homeless men to be challenging and interesting.

Holmes was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church in 1978, 17 years after he went into training for the church army.

The next move took the family to Moose Jaw, Sask. where Holmes served as parish priest at St. George’s and St. Anne’s churches. The Holmes spent seven years in this location before moving on to Estevan, Sask.

This move was to last 17 years.

By the time Holmes had served almost two decades in Estevan, he

was 66-years-old and thinking of retirement.

But, beore he knew it, his plans changed and within a very short time frame, he found himself off to the West Indies, a move he certainly hadn’t anticipated. But he had heard clergy was needed there and decided he would enjoy the experience.

Although only in the West Indies a short time, he has fond memories of the time spent there.

“The people had a heavy dialect. It was extremely hot and no air conditioning. And I was lonely, but when I got home and started thinking about it, I realized I really did enjoy it.”

Retirement seemed more of a real possibility than ever when Holmes returned home from the West Indies, but once again, fate stepped in.

While staying with his sister in Red Deer, he learned that Rimbey’s Anglican Church needed a clergyman. He agreed to go and fill he position on an interim basis.

But, that was 10 years ago. Since moving here, Holmes has served both the Anglican Church in Rimbey and the Lutheran Church in Bentley.

About nine years ago, he became the Chaplain of Rimbey Hospital.

The Rev. David Holmes has retired from his position as Priest in Charge of Rimbey Anglican Church of the Epiphany and pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Bentley and Chaplain of Rimbey Hospital. Holmes received art work from both the Rimbey and Bentley churches at his retirement party.

During his lifetime he has traveled extensively, visiting such countries as Australia, Israel, England and Russia.

Now, with a new chapter in his life just beginning, Holmes reflects on his life journey so far.

“I have very much enjoyed the opportunity to connect with so many people and so many opportunities that I have had.”

He admits he is not very good at saying no, but notes that he has often found himself in the right place at the right time.

“My faith and my sense of humour have always got me through,” he said.

Looking at the piano in his living room which is covered with congratulatory retirement cards, he marvels that people have been so benevolent and kind to him.

“They seem to see things in me that I don’t see in myself,” he said.

He was especially humbled by comments made at his retirement party which was attended by around 200 people.

The person speaking said, “David has the ability to bring the spark out in people’s lives.”

Holmes will, no doubt, continue to bring the spark out in others, even as he continues into retirement.

It’s a gift he has been given, not only as a clergyman, but, simply, as a man.

Real Change is not so real

With 2015 behind us, I want to wish all constituents in Red Deer Lacombe a Happy New Year! And as tradition demands, it’s also a time to reflect back on 2015.

For the first several months of 2015, Canada was respected on the international stage, we had our fiscal house in order, our economy was on track to continue to grow, and taxes were the lowest in over 50 years. Canada was moving forward confidently on trade deals with Europe (CETA) and the Pacific region (TPP), and we were seen as a

dependable ally in the fight against terrorism and ISIS. Fast Forward to October 19th.

Voters were sold a bill of goods that was anchored on the mantra Real Change. This real change was supposed to be a different way, a sunnier way to supposedly restore confidence in the House of Commons. If the first 40 days of this new government are any indication of the Real Change Justin Trudeau is going to bring Canadians, voters may be asking for their change back in 2019.

So let’s have a recap of these first few days: Liberal promised to relocate 25,000 refugees by the end of 2015, which we now know was unrealistic. Promise broken.

Trudeau also deceived Canadians by saying he’d take our CF-18’s out of the fight, which he has apparently reneged on. Promise Broken.

Trudeau also indicated he’d only run $10 billion deficits for the first few years of

a Liberal mandate. The fiscal update passed in early December by the Liberals indicates they will run up the debt for Canadians by more than double that. Promise broken.

However, the Liberals have kept some promises: Canadians taxes will be going up, you can save less of your hard earned money in a Tax Free Savings Account, and families will be losing benefits under the Universal Child Care benefit, promises which weren’t worth keeping.

To further exacerbate problems for working Albertans, Keystone XL was cancelled by president Obama just a few days after Trudeau became the PM, and Northern Gateway Pipeline seems all but dead now, as Trudeau has promised to ban tanker traffic off the west coast.

Then, there’s the Liberal entitlement attitude, creeping back in! Remember Trudeau saying that income splitting and the UCCB wasn’t a good policy, because it only benefitted

rich families like his?

However, once he took office, with the ink barely dry on his swearing in papers, he ordered Cabinet to approve the salary cost to hire two nannies to raise his children. Mr. Trudeau believes he is entitled to his entitlements and he believes that you and I should be the ones who pay for them.

Finally, keep in mind the Liberals spent almost 3 billion dollars internationally in their first 30 days in office, all of which were not accounted for in their platform. The rising cost of Liberal commitments will have to be offset by some sort of revenue generating tool (taxes).

Justin Trudeau woke up on October 20th with a hangover realizing he won the lottery, and in true frat boy mentality, he is intent on spending every dollar possible as recklessly as possible.

Rimbey Christian School winter fundraiser banquet coming up soon The Rimbey Christian School is gearing up to host a winter fundraising banquet on February 5. Entertainment for the evening will include an opening musical performance by RCS alumni Codi Kreil accompanied

by Jordana Baker.

Feature entertainers Bare’n Von Hair (Matt Day and Gord Graber) will follow with their musical comedy show. It is guaranteed to be an enjoyable evening filled with clean, classy and creative entertainment and great food.

Codi Kreil grew up on an acreage about 11 miles north of Eckville.

Noticing that she had a knack for rhythm, her mom put her in drum lessons when she was eight-years-old.

Codi played drums in the church band, and in her grandma’s basement every chance she got.

She started guitar lessons at age 11 and began writing songs almost immediately.

She had written over 50 songs by the time she was in high school. She was so in love with music that she put a band together in high school that did quite well.

“I feel unfathomably blessed to be given the opportunities, relationships and passion I have been given,” Kreil said. “I released my first album

when I was 19 and my second one when I was 23. I started teaching guitar out of the school library when I was 15 and still teach guitar today.

The school library was located in my very small and endearing school Rimbey Christian School - where I spent many formative years of my life and owe a great deal of gratitude to the teachers for putting up with me.”

Codi met Jordana Baker at Camp Silversides and a friendship formed.

Jordana also grew up with music as an important part of her life. She has played violin for 13 years. They started playing together in a worship team. Codi invited Jordana to be part of her first album and they have played together since.

Currently, Codi has opened a studio in Red Deer with a few other very qualified music instructors.

This is her night job - by day Codi is a school teacher at Gateway Christian School. Some may ask what her next big project is – presently Codi is finishing the musical she is writing to be performed in Red Deer for the Christmas season of 2016.

Edmonton is home for entertainers Matt Day and Gord Graber—better known as Bare’n Von Hair. The Bare’n Von Hair

duo blends musicial antics and humor to create a delightful show. The Duo consists of a balding pianist, Matt Day, and a pony-tailed drummer, Gord Graber. Matt and Gord have been professional musicians since the early ’90s, and have been playing music together for more than two decades. They combine

PARIS, John Peter August 28, 1925-January 6, 2016 ODENBACH Melba May Odenbach of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre ~ Long Term Care on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the age of 89 years.

Melba will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children: one son, Murray (Trudy) Odenbach of Bentley; and three daughters, Charlene (Wayne) Shearer of Vulcan, Alberta; Carol (Don) Wiebe of Calgary; and Gail (Bill) Mathew of Edmonton; as well as nine grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and three great, great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two brothers, Gordon (Joelaine) Chiles; and Norman (Marg) Chiles, both of Red Deer; and her three sisters, Evva (Don) McKay of Wetaskiwin; Belva (Dave) Westerby of Cranbrook, B.C.; and Joyce (Malcomb) Grant of Calgary; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. Melba was predeceased by her parents, Elwood and Ellen Chiles; her beloved husband, Albert ‘Abb’; one brother, Bill; and one sister, Marion.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Melba’s Life was held at the Rimbey United Church, Rimbey on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer.

Interment will take place in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Rimbey at a later date. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Melba’s Memory may be made directly to the David Thompson Health Trust, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre ~ Long Term Care, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0. John passed away at Strathmore Hospital. He was born to Jean Pierre and Elizabeth of Langdon, AB. He started school in Langdon and, at the age of 10, the family moved to Cheadle where he continued his schooling at the Fairplay School and met the love of his life, Doris Drake. They were united in marriage on January 25, 1947 and spent 68 marvelous years together. John loved the farm and spent his life involved in agriculture, grain farming and raising livestock. He was also involved in real estate, eventually forming JonDor Real Estate. He devoted his life to his family and his community. John was the founding president of the Cheadle Lions Club, a long-time member of the Sodbusters, and an active supporter of his neighbourhood churches. Left to mourn his loss is his loving wife Doris; son Guy (Wendy); daughter Marlyn (David) Townsend; grandsons Jason (Kerri) and Douglas (Yolanda); and great-grandchildren Tia, Lucas, Alex, Isaac, and Reid. John was predeceased by his parents, sisters Martha (Rob) Jackson and Mary (Ed) Barlow, and brother in law Bob (Phyllis) Drake. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made directly to the Cheadle Lions Club Hospice Fund (Box 22 Site 3 RR1, Strathmore, AB. T1P 1J6). LANGMUIR, Walter

June 17, 1920 - January 3, 2016

Walter was born in Rimbey, AB. June 17, 1920. He grew up on the family farm with 6 brothers and 2 sisters. At the onset of WWII, Walter joined the armed forces and devoted his life to his country. He married Margaret McGuire in 1946 and raised four beautiful daughters Darlene ( Bill ), Sheila ( Lawrence ), Gayla ( Floyd ), Cheryl ( John ). Margaret predeceased him in 1993. In 1995 Walter married another Margaret ( Engleson ) and moved to Creston, B.C. Walter passed away January 3, 2016 and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Margaret, four daughters and spouses, step daughter Sheila (Byron), step son Roger, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, one brother and one sister.

Numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral service was held Friday January 8, 2016 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Creston, B.C. Burial to follow in Rimbey, AB, Memorial Contributions may be made to Swan Valley Lodge Box 1880, Creston, BC or to the donors choice.

We would like to thank all who sent food, flowers, cards and calls on behalf of our mother Sharon Hanna.

BY TREENA MIELKE Depending on the assessed value of their home, taxpayers in Rimbey could see about a hundred-dollar increase on the municipal portion of their tax bill this year.

The increase equates to a home in Rimbey which is assessed at around $205,000, said acting CAO Lori Hillis, who noted the municipal mill rate has increased by two per cent this year.

Commercial taxes have also gone up two per cent.

Mayor Rick Pankiw is pleased with the minimal increase.

“We tried to listen to the taxpayers and make it as light as possible. The town is in good shape, barring any unforeseen disaster. As with all municipalities we are waiting for the NDP’s budget to determine what may happen (regarding municipal funding).”

Rimbey’s $6 million budget shows projected operating expenses of $5.8 million with $172,000 slated for reserves and $1.5 million to go towards capital expenditures.

Capital expenditures include $30,000 worth of upgrades to the RCMP station, two stand-by generators valued at $85,000 each for the community centre and Well 13, a new water well for $60,000 and main reservoir and pumphouse upgrades for $75,000.

JULY 2015 HIGHLIGHTS Canada Day celebration provides plenty of family fun

JUNE 2015 HIGHLIGHTS Break-in involves theft of highly valued hockey memorabilia Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 40 files this week. Highlights include a break and enter to a residence, theft, mischief, drugs, fraud and other serious matters.

Break-in A local homeowner, who resides north of Bluffton, had his house broken into while he was away over the last few weeks. Police were notified by a concerned citizen that there was a suspicious yellow side-by-side utility vehicle hidden in the trees on his farm which was visible from an oil lease road on his property. Further investigation revealed the $18,000 off-highway vehicle had actually been stolen from an acreage north of Bluffton near Township Road 444.

When police notified the owner of the vehicle it was realized that his home had also been broken into.

Rimbey detachment members and a RCMP Forensic Crime Scene specialist attended the residence and began to gather evidence pertaining to the case.

The thieves had completely emptied out the entire residence, stealing everything from kitchen ware to highly valued authentic framed NHL signed jerseys from noted players, such as Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, Pavel Bure and many others. A priceless Royal Bank Cup hockey ring was also stolen. Police continue to diligently follow up on all leads and examine evidence as the investigation continues.

In his speech Mayor Rick Pankiw, who was MC of the opening ceremonies, said the organizing committee spearheaded by Cindy Bowie, community services director deserved kudos for a job well done.

He mentioned Cheryl Jones, Pas Ka Poo Park administrator, Gayle Rondeel, Dawna Providenti and councillors Matthew Jaycox, Jack Webb and Brian Godlongton for their help in making the event the success it was.

Out-of-towners who came to Rimbey to enjoy the festivities were impressed with the event, enjoying many of the activities, eating birthday cake, and simply having a good time.

“It’s more kid friendly than Red Deer activities,” said Rieki Solberg.

“There is no shortage of activities for the kids,” added Jessi O’Reilley, who was at the park with her husband, Jesse and their three pre-school children, Saeber, Ranger and Drae.

Halina Pearce, who lives in the United Kingdom and was visiting her brother Michael Jarmoluk for a few days, also took part in the celebrations. A gracious lady with a lovely smile, Pearce held onto her brother’s arm as she mixed and mingled with the crowd.

Jarmoluk, dressed in his Legion uniform, took great pride in introducing her to his many friends.

Halina Pearce, who lives in the United Kingdom, but was in Rimbey visiting, on July 1, enjoyed the Canada Day celebrations with her brother Michael Jarmoluk, a longtime resident of the community.
