More than 1,000 people attended the 11th annual Sumas Mountain Happening outdoor rock festival on Aug. 7, 1999, with bands such as Nickelback, Jar, New Big Shoes and Pleasure performing.

The festival took place on an 11.5-acre pri-

vate property on Ward Road. Bushes lined the long walk from where festival-goers parked their vehicles to where the concert venue was located.

Sometime around midnight, a 21-year-woman was walking back to her car when she was sexually assaulted, choked and threatened with death by an unknown man.

Now, 16 years later, the alleged assailant has

been charged.

James Allen Redden, 48, of Vancouver Island has been charged with sexual assault, unlawful confinement and uttering threats.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said evidence was gathered following the attack, but the case remained unsolved until December 2013.

DNA evidence led to suspect’s arrest From A1

Department’s major crime unit sent previously seized clothing evidence for DNA analysis.

In early 2014, a DNA profile was discovered and a suspect was identified.

MacDonald said that before then, there was no match because the suspect was not in the DNA database.

He said it then took some additional time for police to gather further evidence to back up their case, leading to the charges being laid against Redden on Dec. 17, 2015.

MacDonald credited the arrest to the “extraordinary bravery” of the victim, now 37, and her “strength and perseverance” in working with investigators.

A woman was killed after being struck by several vehicles on Highway 1 in Abbotsford early Wednesday morning. She apparently walked directly into the path of traffic, according to police.

Redden was arrested and charged with the attack 12 years later, in 2007, but was acquitted at trial when the judge said the evidence heard at trial didn’t establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Redden was guilty.

The complainant had been a resident of a local hotel, where Redden testified he often went for casual sex with women.

Semen found on a jacket belonging to the complainant was determined to be Redden’s, but his lawyer argued that the semen was transferred there when the woman picked up clothing at the motel belonging to another resident.

The freeway was closed in both directions from McCallum Road to Sumas Way for almost five hours.

The Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Service (ICARS) and the BC Coroners Service attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

The Abbotsford Police Department, Abbotsford Fire

Rescue Service and the BC Ambulance Service also provided support on the scene.

McEwen said investigators have not identified the other vehicles involved and are asking the drivers to come forward.

Their names have not yet been released.

Investigators determined there was a link between the break-in and a residence in the 19800 block of Peters Road on Sumas Prairie in Chilliwack.

That residence was quickly cordoned off by the Abbotsford Police emergency response team (ERT), with support from the Lower Mainland District ERT.

Two Abbotsford men have been arrested in Hope following an investigation into the theft of property and weapons.

The investigation began Dec. 29, when the RCMP crime reduction unit (CRU) in Chilliwack received information from the Abbotsford Police Department of a black Dodge pickup truck associated to a break-in over Christmas.

Abbotsford Police believed the suspect vehicle was travelling in the Upper Fraser Valley region.

In the early afternoon of the 29th, the suspect truck was in Hope under the surveillance of Chilliwack CRU officers, who waited for the opportunity to safely stop the vehicle and ap-

January 8, 2016 Winter Snow & Ice Program The goal of the City’s Snow and Ice Control Program is to maintain travel routes where there is snow and ice on roads and restore mobility for the traveling public. Our priority roads for snow and ice removal are: • ¿rst priority (high volume and strategic arterial and collector roads, and major access roads to hillside areas); • second priority (remaining arterial, hillside areas and collector routes); and • third priority (remaining roadways not identi¿ed as ¿rst and second priority).

First priority roads are maintained until conditions are under control subject to worker/equipment availability and weather. Once these roads are addressed resources are redirected to second priority routes and subsequently third priority routes.

The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions. The public is encouraged to use caution, and wherever possible, park vehicles off the streets. Abandoned vehicles or vehicles obstructing roadways will be towed without notice to allow for snow clearing operations to continue and towing costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owners. We ask that you do not plow snow from private properties onto the public roadways as this can result in visibility hazards and obstructions and will require additional time for clearing roadways.

A small group of volunteers in Aldergrove and Surrey is making sure that the homeless and disadvantaged in Abbotsford and elsewhere in the Fraser Valley have warm and clean clothing.

Free Clothing BC has delivered clothes and personal health items to at least 2,000 people over the past three years it has been in existence.

Dan and Charmaine Deyette of Aldergrove and Tanya McLean of Surrey first met while serving as volunteers with another organization. They decided to start their own organization in February 2012, with the goal of providing only new – or clean used – clothing to those in need. “We launder every single used item that we give out and we store them in standard storage boxes in heated, rented mini-stor-

age lockers in Surrey and Aldergrove,� Dan said. “It’s safer and that way there’s no chance of vermin getting into the goods. We feel better about doing it this way than using ‘free’ sheds for storing everything.�

The organization hosts regular events at schools and churches where the public is invited to come and choose what they may need. These events are publicized on social media, as well as through posters at the food banks, Job Zone offices, shelters and elsewhere.

They also do regular deliveries of goods to people through organizations such as Abbotsford’s Warm Zone for women; 5 and 2 Ministries, which works with the homeless in Abbotsford; and the Aboriginal Friendship Centre and the Hub Society in Surrey.

The funds also enabled the group to legally incorporate as the Fraser Valley Free Clothing Society and to purchase new clothing items.

A man who helped the Surrey Six killers to the apartment door where their victims were murdered has pleaded guilty to break-and-enter and has been sentenced to 285 days in jail.

Sophon Sek entered the plea in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Dec. 18.

The court heard that on Oct. 19, 2007, Sek arranged to bring Red Scorpions gang members to visit Corey Lal – a rival drug dealer – so they could rob him.

They paid Sek $25,000 to let them into the Surrey apartment building.

Lal and five others – including his brother Michael and friends Eddie Narong and Ryan Bartolomeo, as well as gas fitter Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford and apartment neighbour Christopher Mohan – were executed that day.

Sek’s lawyer said his client was shocked to learn of the deaths of the six men, but did not go to police.

He was also facing a manslaughter charge in connection with his role, but that was stayed.

Eileen Mohan, mom of innocent victim Christopher Mohan, said her son would be here today if it wasn’t for Sek.

“Mr. Sek, had you not participated in this crime, my son would have never been delivered to me in a casket,� she said in a victim impact statement.

Sek is already in prison serving a five-year jail sentence for a string of unrelated drug and weapons charges he pleaded guilty to earlier this year.

Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston were convicted in October 2014 of six counts of first-degree murder in the Surrey Six case and are serving life sentences. Two others have also been convicted in the case, and accused Jamie Bacon has yet to face trial.

Other Hand So there it was in the mailbox Wednesday morning – an envelope from the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia containing my last two pay stubs and a document from Service Canada detailing my Record of Employment.

In Box 16 it stated, as of Dec. 31, 2015, under “Reason for issuing this ROE”: voluntary retirement.

In other words, that’s it ... I’m done with “real work.” And since Nov. 25, 2015 was a milestone birthday for me, I’m now too old to get another “real” job, not that I really want one anyway.

And I’m sure if I applied for Employment Insurance I’d be denied any benefits

because I am now officially out of the market.

Regardless, having spent more than 25 full-time years in the newspaper industry, and some 20 more in political communications, it has been a great run.

However, it seems my day is not yet done, for as of Jan. 1 of this new year I will be taking up a new, though parttime, role as a bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia. Coincidently, though unintentionally, my appointment was signed by the lieutenant-governor on my birthday, which was neat.

A bencher, for whom the term is new, is essentially a member of the board of directors of the LSBC. In its own words, “The Law Society of British Columbia upholds and protects the public interest in the administration of justice by ensuring the independence, integrity and competence of lawyers, establishing education and professional development standards for lawyers, regulating the practice of law and pre-

serving and protecting the rights and freedoms of all persons.”

That means the benchers – 31 in all, 25 of whom are lawyers and six like me who are laypersons – determine the course of law in this province, including necessary disciplinary action, and even disbarment, of miscreant lawyers.

It will not be an easy task, with a huge learning curve, but it is a challenge that I look forward to with great interest. And considering there are some 13,000 lawyers active in B.C., I’m certain there will be some busy moments in the coming years.

Thus it is that for a few times a month my mostly everyday attire of blue jeans will be abandoned in favour of blue suits, and TReO will benefit from a few additional tolls to cross the Port Mann Bridge.

2015 also brought other changes. This column, for instance, morphed from a mainly commentary piece into frequent historical and otherwise accounts of “faces, places and traces.”

If I can go by anecdotal comments from readers, this change is appreciated. Makes me now wonder what they thought of my previous rants.

That said, this column is the 500th in the almost 10 years since its resurrection following an almost 15-year hiatus. That means some 300,000 words have flowed from my keyboard to these pages since 2006.

Hopefully a few of them resonated with you, some eliciting an “I didn’t know that” thought and others brought forth a smile or the comment “Right on!” I’m sure there were also words that generated a “what drivel” response.

Whatever the feedback, these 500 or so weeks of doing what I enjoy – providing a bit of entertainment in an industry that’s been a major part of my life – has been very rewarding.

And, unlike my former day job, I’m not done yet – there are still a few more columns left to write. markrushton@abbynews.com

A snitch line campaign that aims to get illegal guns out of the hands of gangsters is yielding some early results after six months, but it’s far short of a target of removing 500 firearms from the street in the first year.

The “Cash for Guns” campaign launched last June

by Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers offered a $2,000 reward for anonymous tipsters to report an illegal firearm.

It was hoped friends, family, associates or even rivals of gangsters would provide information to help police seize their guns.

So far “dozens” of illegal guns and other weapons have been retrieved through the campaign and more than 200 anonymous tips have come in, according to Linda Annis, executive director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers.

She was unable to provide specific numbers or other details of seizures, arrests or rewards paid, but said the campaign has generated “excellent” intelligence for police.

“Many of the files are still under investigation,” Annis said, noting there is often a lengthy lag between tips, police investigations and any charges being laid.

“We’re not at the 500 goal yet – we’re still reaching and hoping to achieve that,” Annis said.

But she called the program a success, adding Crime Stoppers has been asked to extend it for another year.

In 2014, tips to Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers helped lead to about 180 arrests.

Tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, text to CRIMES (274637), use a Crime Stoppers iPad or iPhone app, or submit their tip via solvecrime.ca or the Crime Stoppers Facebook page.

The valley’s bushiest beard KEEP ABBOTSFORD WARM On the Spot

I recently bumped into Thomas Hodgson, the guy with the bushiest beard probably in the Fraser Valley. He certainly wasn’t hard to miss by any stretch of the imagination as I sat in a restaurant. I shared with him that his hairy reddish beard was very impressive and he shared that it goes past his waist. I have seen my fellow Sikh brothers with beards like these, but not a Caucasian person, except for Santa, of course. I was told once that people with beards hold much wisdom.

Hodgson, who has been growing his beard for two years, says he gets a lot of Ken strange responses from people. Women have asked him to shave it off and his response to them is to stop wearing makeup.

He explains that small children are always pleasant with him and usually hold no judgments or biases. Adults and teenagers are the worst, he explains.

“Rarely do I get a positive reaction from an adult or teens. Women in their 20s are scared and intimidated and same goes for men. Older women and men are very judgmental and stare for a long time, and make really puzzled looks and that’s the same for people who have grown up here.”

Hodgson says he feels alienated through all of this, especially when looking for employment, where many employers have asked him to shave it off.

He lost his job a year ago, and has a hard time finding a job, because many have judged him because of this very reason, but he refuses to shave it off. He says people are far more judgmental in

They fled the Congo six years ago and were approved for travel by the Canadian government some time ago.

The community has been generous in donating household needs for the families, but there is still one major outstanding requirement.

Only one of those coming to Mission can speak any English. The rest speak Swahili.

The host groups would like to find a group of Swahili-speaking people who can assist in making the refugees feel welcome and help them fit into their new Canadian homeland.

Having been a past recipient of the Champion of Diversity in 2007, I was honoured to receive this recognition.

With this award comes a responsibility to continue to serve. There are five award categories and never a shortage of outstanding nominees that showcase our community’s commitment to cultural diversity.

The event is always sold out with fine representatives from our community. The time has come that award organizers and judges should consider expanding and awarding two awards for each category. In doing this, we touch more people and create more mentors.

One thing I hear often from volunteers is they never get recognized for their work, and this would be a small way to change this perception.

The So You Think You Can Dance tour stops in Abbotsford this Saturday, Jan. 9.

Auditions for next Gallery 7 play Gallery 7 Theatre holds open auditions on Tuesday, Jan. 12 for the next production in its 25th anniversary season.

The auditions for the play Schoolhouse begin at 6:30 p.m. at Huntington Station, #100 – 34595 Third Ave. They are open to all male and female performers from the ages of 14 to 75.

Schoolhouse is written by Canadian playwright Leanna Brodie.

It is set in 1938 in a one-room schoolhouse in the fictional town of Baker’s Creek in rural Canada, where a young but precocious Melita Linton is appointed teacher of an endearing yet rambunctious group of children.

Quickly gaining the respect of her young charges, Linton is challenged by the arrival of a new student, a juvenile delinquent named Ewart, who was sent to the community after doing time in Battenville Training School.

Linton attempts to reach out to the young boy and struggles to help both the town and the young man move beyond their fears and insecurities. “Schoolhouse celebrates those teachers who have had a positive impact in our lives,� said Ken Hildebrandt, executive/artistic director of Gallery 7 Theatre.

Schoolhouse runs April 8 and 9, 13 to 16 at 7:30 p.m. with discount matinees on April 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Ave. Call-back auditions will be held Jan. 16 at 10 a.m., and rehearsals begin the week of Feb. 3. A childhood dream was fulfilled by Aldergrove’s Shea Theodore as the 20-year-old made his National Hockey League debut last week in Calgary.

Theodore was recalled by the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 27 –the third time they had brought him up from the American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls this season – but finally got his first taste of NHL regular season action in his team’s 1-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome on Dec. 29.

The former FraserValleyThunderbird has since suited up for the Ducks against the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 31, versus the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 1, and against the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 3.

“It was fun and fast,” Theodore said on the Ducks website. “It’s good to have a nice atmosphere like that for your first game.

“I played it simple (and) it helps when you have a defence partner like Clayton Stoner. He made things easy.”

Theodore played 15:45 in his debut.

He finished with one shot on goal. His time has increased since, as he logged 19:28 against Winnipeg. Theodore has recorded seven shots in his four games, and has a plus-minus rating of plus one.

He began the season with San Diego but an injury over the weekend to the Ducks’ top defenceman, Cam Fowler, earned him the call-up.

Theodore was a first-round pick of the Ducks, who chose him 26th overall in the 2013 NHL entry draft.

Theodore said he was not expecting the call-up.

“A little bit of a surprise, but things have been going well (this season) in San Diego,” he told Black Press by phone on Monday.

His first phone call after he got the news was back home to his father Cam in Aldergrove.

“He was pretty pumped,” Theodore said.

UFV athletics return to action on a big way on Friday night.

After a month-long absence, the UFV Cascades men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the men’s and women’s Cascades volleyball teams, hit the floor all evening on Friday.

It’s the first time this season that both the bigger Envision Athletic Centre and the smaller Student Activity Centre are hosting games, and on Friday they will do so at the same time.

Action kicks off in the big gym with the women’s basketball team battling the Mount Royal

University Cougars at 6 p.m.

Just down the hall, the women’s volleyball team welcomes the Camosun Chargers, also kicking off at 6 p.m.

The women’s basketball team sits in fourth place in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s Explorer Division, with a record of four wins and four losses.

UFV’s women’s volleyball team leads the Pacwest, with a record of 10 wins and two losses.

The men’s basketball team tips off against the Cougars starting at 8 p.m. in the big gym, with the men’s volleyball team squaring off against the

Chargers in the small gym at 8 p.m.

The men’s basketball team ranks second in the Explorer Division, with a record of five wins and three losses.

The Cascades men’s volleyball team sits third, with a record of seven wins and five losses.

The volleyball teams return to the floor on Saturday afternoon against the Chargers, with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m. The basketball teams hit the hardwood on Saturday, with the women tipping off at 5 p.m., and the men at 7 p.m.

“It would be nice to do that, but obviously you can’t get your hopes up,” he said.

“I am here to just try and get in the lineup and if I do, that’s great.”

“He’s played well (this season),” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said prior to the Calgary game.

“He’s a very good quarterback of the power play. That’s been his strength his whole life.

“If he plays, I think he will do well.”

The six-foot-two, 195pound defenceman is tied for fourth on the Gulls in scoring with four goals and 16 points in 27 games. Three of his goals have come on the power play.

This is his first full season of professional hockey after a stellar Western Hockey League

career with the Seattle Thunderbirds which saw him score 58 goals and 212 points in 257 games. He was the WHL’s top defenceman in 2014/15.

Theodore was also on the Canadian team which won gold at last year’s world junior hockey championships.

He played 13 games at the AHL level last spring once his time with Seattle was done, scoring five goals and 14 points in 13 games.

It has been an adjustment, going from junior hockey to the professional level.

“The guys are bigger and stronger (at this level) but I feel like I am handling myself pretty well,” he said.

Theodore and the Ducks host the St. Louis Blues on Friday, and then the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

One of the longest running and most prestigious girls basketball tournaments in the province returns to Abbotsford starting today (Friday).

Since 1973, the Eagles Invitational basketball tournament has brought together some of the top senior girls teams in the province.

The eight-team girls draw features sever-

al of the top teams in the province, including Langley’s Brookswood Bobcats and the Kelowna Owls.

Brookswood enters the tournament ranked as the number one AAA senior girls team in the province, while the Owls are ranked fourth.

North Vancouver’s Handsworth Royals (ninth) and the host MEI Eagles (10th) are the other top-10

ranked teams participating at the event.

Other teams in the tournament include: Chilliwack’s Sardis Falcons, the South Kamloops Titans, the W.J. Mouat Hawks, and the Vernon Panthers.

The tournament kicks off with MEI against Sardis at the MEI Secondary gym at 1:15 p.m. on Friday.

Mouat opens against Kelowna at 6:30 p.m.

Games continue the

Vancouver’s Bodwell Bruins, the Burnaby Central Wildcats, and the New Westminster Hyacks.

Every team plays each other once, with a champion being determined on Saturday night. MEI opens the tournament against Bodwell on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

The rain fell along twisty road around Sproat and Kennedy Lakes, though it wasn’t the downpour promised. It was a blessing because it meant taking the truck to the speed limit and it just hugged the road in the corners. The air suspension guaranteed a luxury limo ride.

The eight-speed transmission offered smooth ascent and descent through high country that forms Sutton Pass. In some uphill stretches, there were a few too many gear changes but slipping it into sport mode fixed that. A couple of hours travelling through breathtaking scenery brought us to the Tofino/ Ucluelet junction and sunshine! Minutes later, the first bottle was cracked and the magnificent view from the room’s balcony of Big Beach and a rocky grove enjoyed.

Day two took us through slippery conditions on trails around the amazing Long Beach, which offered a glimpse of the Jeep’s considerably off-road capabilities. (Resisted the temptation to surf there.)

Off-road fans are not going to buy this to pursue their hobby but it’s a fabulous vehicle for winter sports fans.

BUITENWERF William Bill (William) Buitenwerf passed peacefully into the presence of our Lord on Tuesday morning January 5th, 2016. Bill was born May 4th, 1935 in Holland, immigrated to Canada in 1952 and met the love of his life, Tina, in St. Catherines, Ontario and was married May 4th, 1957 and enjoyed a life long romance thereafter. Bill is survived by his wife Tina, his children: Anna Marie (Richard Prins), Bill (Jennifer), and Patricia (Daniel Boyes), and his grandchildren: Derrick, Kendall, Rachel (Daniel), Rebecca (Brett), Jessica, Jason and Aaron. Bill’s passions included his faith, running his electronics and health food stores, gardening and healthy living. We would like to thank Maplewood House staff and Dr. Pauls for their excellent care and love. A memorial service will be held at Seven Oaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Rd., at 2:00 pm Monday, January 11th.

RUTTAN Victoria V. November 18, 1920 ~ December 27, 2015 It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Vicki Ruttan in Kamloops, BC. She is predeceased by her husband Claude Ruttan, parents James and Annie Stokes, sisters Muriel, Lillian, Alma, Mable, Ida, Christina, Mildred and brothers Alex, Art and Jimmy.

Victoria is survived by her daughter Merilyn (Ed) Britten, son Gary Ruttan, sisters Doreen Smythe and Evelyn (Bob) Anderson, brother Tommy (Joyce Stokes). Also she will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Susan, Vincent, Tiffany and great grandchild Kay-Ellen and nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends.

Vicki was born in Goodwater, Sask., raised in Regina, Sask. and moved to Mission, BC with her parents and some siblings.

She met and married Claude Ruttan and raised their two children in Mission, BC. Vicki worked for Aylmers Cannery, E.I. Buckerfields and the Co-op during her working years.

She and Claude spent many happy times at the cabin they built in the Caribou. They also traveled to California several times making new friends.

Eventually they moved to Nanaimo where Claude passed away.

Vicki was in a complete loss without him beside her where she cherished the cuddles that they shared in the hospital bed to their last kiss. After that she took as many walks she could to find a path where life may take her, the memories that will always be remembered and tears of heart break.

With help from friends and family, she ventured out took up roller blading at the age of 77. She learnt the hard way, she fell and realized that this was not for her. Her next adventure was learning how to kayak. Vicki enjoyed this very much as her travels took her to the harbor and back.

Vicki and her niece traveled to Hong Kong as she wanted to see where her sister-in-law was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese. She also went on a river rafting trip down the Fraser River. Vicki learnt that with family and friends around she was never alone and that Claude was still beside her through every adventure she had taken. May we all learn from a strong lady like Vicki.

We, Vicki’s family would like to thank Pine Grove Care Home and there staff for the wonderful care she received.

Susanna Susanna peacefully passed away at the age of 96, to be with her Lord and Saviour on January 1, 2016. She was in the care of the wonderful staff at the Chilliwack Hospice. She is survived by her children, Lilly Boschmann, Henry (Gale) Sawatzky, John (Barbara) Sawatzky, Linda (Ed) Driediger, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, her sister, Anna, and her brother, Peter, both of Germany. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Eben-ezer Mennonite Church, 2051 Windsor St., Abbotsford, BC. Pastors Ingrid Schultz and Artur Bergen will be officiating. Susanna’s family would like to thank the staff of the ACE unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and especially all the staff at the Chilliwack Hospice for their exceptional care.
