Ambulance petition picking up steam Shelter full

Many residents are calling for increased paramedic services.

Residents are concerned with what they say is a lack of ambulances at the ready in Maple Ridge.

One man’s petition to change that is garnering attention.

When it comes to ambulance service in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Matt Kelso wants to see change.

Kelso, 27, has brain cancer, and the fact that there are only two ambulances to serve the population of both communities concerns him.

So much so, that he has started a petition on change.org.

“If I have a seizure or stroke, at the current rate, I could wait over an hour for an ambulance to get me to a hospital for treatment, which could cause irreversible damage or death,” his petition states.

“Personally, I feel like this is horribly inadequate for someone my age, but someone my grandma’s age, it’s a death wish.”

As of Wednesday morning, the online petition had 1,509 supporters, and a number of comments.

“This is disgraceful how we treat the ambulance and para-

medic first responders,” wrote Steve Hegedus.

“It’s about time to come into the 20th century with respect to their shifts and pay. The last thing I need when I need them is a pissed off underpaid, tired first responder.”

Fellow petitioner Karen Gallelo wrote she “can’t believe we only have two ambulances for the entire population of Maple Ridge.”

And now, Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read is throwing her support behind the initiative.

She highlighted a situation during an-all candidates meeting during the federal election campaign last fall, where a senior citizen felt the unfortunate effects of the two-vehicle situation.

“We had an elderly woman actually fall,” Read told Global BC. “Our firefighters arrived within 10 minutes, but that woman needed to be transported to hospital, and she’s 90, and she laid on the floor for the better part of an hour [waiting.]”

But Emergency Health

Services (EHS) noted that the average response time in Maple Ridge is 12 minutes, and added the number of ambulances at a station doesn’t necessarily determine response, as ambulances can be dispatched from other locations directly, as well.

However, Jodi Jensen, the BC Emergency Health Services Chief Operating Officer, told Global BC they have taken the “proactive step of undertaking a study of our services and projecting the demand going forward.”

With another cold snap looming this weekend, the team at the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows Ministries (formerly The Caring Place) are again ready to offer temporary shelter to local homeless.

The Salvation Army has a contract with the province to provide 15 makeshift beds in case of extreme cold or wet weather.

These 15 spaces, additional to the 25 emergency shelter beds available all year, are made available (as necessary) from Nov. 1 to Mar. 31.

When overnight temperatures are predicted to drop below -3 degrees, or more than 50 mm of rain is predicted to fall, an Emergency Weather Response (EWR) alert is issued, explained Salvation Army spokesperson Amelia Norrie.

Back in November the alert was issued for nine nights. Then again, from Dec. 28 to Jan. 5, another alert was issued to those seeking warmth in the dropping temperatures.

During the alert, Norrie said, the shelter had been at capacity five of those eight days.

This is the Army’s second year offering beds at the Lougheed Highway and 222nd Street shelter.

The mats, Norrie said, are set up in the downstairs dining room, and available between 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

“It’s less than ideal, but still comfortable and warm,” Norrie said.

“We’re there to meet the demand, and when the temperature gets low, we are lucky to be given the funding from those beds.”

Although the mats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, she said, no one is turned away.

Men caught inside jewelry store facing charges Bank robbed

Mounties are recommending charges against two Alberta men, 28 and 27 years old, after they were apprehended inside a jewelry store in the 20600 block of Lougheed Highway on Wednesday.

Police were called to the business just after 7 a.m., and the pair were found inside.

They are being held in custody, and face a number of charges including break and enter, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance.

Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a robbery at a local bank.

Just before 6 p.m.

Monday, a man went into the TD Canada Trust Bank in the 20300 block of Dewdney Trunk Road, and robbed employees of an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP are actively investigating this incident,” said Ridge Meadows Cpl. Brenda Winpenny.

A New Year’s Eve camping trip turned tragic when a dad disappeared in Golden Ears Provincial Park.

Search and Rescue located the body of a 39-year-old Pitt Meadows man, who went missing New Year’s Eve. Wade Bathurst had been camping with friends and family up at Gold Creek campground for New Years. He left his camper and campsite at about 2:30 a.m. to set off some fireworks near the beach.

It was searchers patrolling the lake in a zodiac the next morning (Saturday) that discovered his body about 15 feet off the shore in a few feet of water.

A Maple Ridge man is facing criminal charges in connection with a break-in that left a home damaged and two dogs dead on the weekend.

Riley Dill, 20, made brief appearances in Port Coquitlam provincial court Monday and Tuesday.

He is charged with two counts of killing an animal and one count of mischief.

On Tuesday, the court heard that a psychological assessment had been conducted to determine whether Dill was fit to stand trial, and that he had been found fit to proceed.

Dill – wearing a red jail uniform and with his brown hair dishevelled – stood silently in the prisoner’s dock during the court proceedings.

A bail hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, during which the Crown lawyer said he planned to seek Dill’s detention.

Dill has no prior criminal record.

According to Ridge Meadows RCMP, just before 4 p.m. on Saturday the resident of a home in central Maple Ridge reported a break-and-enter and said two dogs inside the home appeared to be dead.

House prices dangerous

H

ow much higher can house prices go in Metro Vancouver?

Aside from a very brief blip during the darkest days of the recession, prices have been rising for more than a decade. We could call the rise “steady,” but it’s been closer to meteoric.

Meanwhile, wages have been rising much more slowly. And we’re running out of land that isn’t part of the ALR. You would think that eventually, some kind of limit would be hit and there’d be a price correction, or at least a pause while we caught our breath for a few years.

So far, everyone who has predicted the housing apocalypse for Vancouver (and Toronto, in a similar situation) has been wrong. It seems like such a safe bet. What goes up must come down. And yet, house prices stubbornly refuse to decline.

Whether the cause is foreign buyers or local speculators, or just ordinary demand, we are already seeing some consequences for local homeowners.

One of the least talked about is that the gap between detached houses and every other type of home is splitting owners into winners and losers.

Winners bought houses five, 10, 40 years ago. They will reap huge rewards if they sell now.

Losers have been renters, or bought townhouses or condos. Their homes have not appreciated in value, or not nearly as much. Throw almost everyone between the ages of 18 and 30 into this category – none of them were old enough to even think about buying before the market started to shoot up.

For quite a while, the traditional advice for young folks starting families has been to buy and move up – get a starter home, a condo, a townhouse, and build some equity.

It turns out that for a generation, that equity is at best a static investment, and the second stage – the detached house – just keeps getting farther out of reach. Who’s going to deal with those younger would-be home buyers when they have two kids and a townhouse that won’t sell?

Mayors and councillors don’t have the political kahunas to do what they should about the transit mess: nothing.

Trouble is, provincial poohbahs have convinced voters that transportation in the Lower Mainland, and only in the Lower Mainland, is a local responsibility.

Of course, they can’t get anything started because nobody wants to foot the huge bill that has accrued over decades of provincial inaction.

Last year’s transit referendum was simply a scheme to get taxpayers to blame themselves for politicians’ incompetence. And those who participated, for or against, only ensure the current mess will continue for at least another decade.

Speaking of nothings, whether or not Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination, he will not be elected president of the United States in November.

There are about 240 million Americans of voting age, and about half turn out to choose their president.

There are a lot of whackos down there, but I cannot bring myself to believe that more than 120 million Americans are that stupid.

Canada Post lacks in customer service Dear Editor, On Friday, Dec. 11, a section of the postal box on 237A Street was broken into.

Don Lekei phoned the security number off of the website and was on hold for 45 minutes to an hour,.

When the call was dropped and he gave up.

The next day, the second section of the postal box was vandalized.

On Monday morning, Dec. 14, a contractor inspected the damage and said two sections of the box were insecure, but the third section was all right.

A postal truck was seen delivering parcels to houses shortly after 1 p.m. the same day and would have put mail in the third section. But shortly before they arrived, the last section of the postal box was ripped opened.

Don called police.

Then he tried to call the Canada Post security line but during the day, the security line goes to the post office.

After 45 minutes on hold, the employee he talked with didn’t know what to do, and put him on hold.

Again the call was

No one at Canada Post seemed very concerned about it or offered any solution.

He never received any communications from Canada Post and apparently delivering mail to the door wasn’t an option.

Multiple neighbours had also tried to phone, but all gave up after waiting so long to get through.

Neighbours had no idea they had to pick up mail from the main post office.

Elderly neighbours not able to get to the post office could not get mail without going to the post office and filling out a form in

person first.

No identity theft protection, or credit watch protection was offered, which would happen if it was another business that had a security breech of this nature.

At the minimum, Canada Post could have put a letter on the mailbox to inform people of where to get their mail.

Perhaps Canada Post should be baiting post boxes as they do cars, to catch thieves.

Finally, after more than two weeks, the box has been replaced, again with no communication from Canada Post.

And, so I paid for the ladies coffee behind me, and I’m not sure what happened after that, but it made me remember there are great people in the world – even if it’s only a smile, a tea, or a coffee.

I wasn’t having the best day, and it turned it around completely… small gestures are a lot sometimes.

“What was I thinking?” and “Nope, nope, nope,” were two honest thoughts that crossed my mind within seconds of running into the frigid water at Alouette Lake on New Year’s Day. The night before, as I rang in 2016 with friends, I used my plan to partake in my first polar bear swim as an icebreaker (get it?).

They told me I was crazy, and I just laughed with excitement and an embarrassing amount of self-confidence.

“How adult-like of me to be spending my New Year’s day being productive, instead of in bed, hungover like the rest of my friends,” I thought.

The next morning, however, under my warm covers, the confidence I had less than eight hours before – which was surely fuelled by a few drinks and being indoors – was gone.

There was no getting out of this commitment, as I’d recently moved back in with my parents and younger brothers – my biggest supporters for any and all of my endeavours.

About a hundred people took the chilly dip into Alouette Lake on New Year’s Day, including Ashley Wadhwani, family and friends. any and all of my endeavours, including stripping down to swim wear and jumping into a lake that is known for being on the cooler side in the summer.

With half-an-hour until the 12 o’clock swim, the crowd of swimmers began gathering by the boat launch.

Some showed up in costumes, such as Darth Vader, a pair of yellow ducks (with facepaint), and an adult-sized baby.

Kevin Webb was swimming for a second time in hopes of putting more than “just his feet in” this year.

His last-minute advice was to just commit and run until I hit the water.

With five minutes until noon, found my starting point on the launch.

By then, the sun was shining through the lifting fog and the view was surprisingly calming.

more than waist deep in the water, with his camera in hand, and it was then I realized backing out was not an option.

The clock hit noon, the countdown began: “5... 4...

3... 2... 1...”

Like an out-of-body experience, I ran into the frigid water, screaming.

Proceeds from a Maple Ridge Secondary bottle drive this Saturday will go directly to renting a mechanical bull, hamster races, and airbrush tattoos for the school’s dry grad celebrations.

Through fundraising, the dry grad committee aims to have “an eclectic mix of activities” in order to draw as many students to the school event in June, and guarantee safe celebrations, said teacher Trevor Randle.

“The better that we can make the dry grad, the more grads actually come to the school sanctioned event… Opposed to celebrating on their own, which can lead to tragedies.”

The bottle-drive runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

of the first to take the plunge was simple: first in, first out.

But, it didn’t quite work out that way.

The instant need to get out of the freezing water was met by the roughly hundred other swimmers still running in.

What had felt like an eternity in the water, was actually less than two minutes long, according to my mom.

Shortly after, most of the swimmers were back on shore, drying off, laughing, and high-fiving each other on a successful dip.

Although my feet were numb – feeling like big blocks of ice every time I moved – I wasn’t as cold as I thought I would be, and happy to have accomplished something new.

As we left – and our toes regained feeling – there were still a few swimmers, much more brave than I, jumping back in for a second or third dip.

It wasn’t until that afternoon, while sitting at the kitchen table, eating chilicheese dogs (I deserved to indulge), and laughing about how we spent our morning, that I could reflect on the swim.

Despite our busy and separating lives, I created my first memory of 2016 with my family – something I haven’t done since banging pots and pans on the driveway more than a decade earlier.

On my first day of 2016, I can also say I checked an experience off of my bucket list, which in turn takes first place for the most productive New Year’s Day I’ve ever had.

I can only hope this will set a tone for accomplishing the goals I plan to pursue this year, in the same way I ran into the chilly lake – full speed ahead.

Ridge businesses semi-finalists 3-D art opens minds

wo Maple Ridge-based businesses are top-ten semi-finalists out of 535 small businesses, nominated from 71 communities across the province for this year’s Small Business BC Awards.

Western Shrink Wrap Limited was nominated in the Best Employer category, presented by WorkSafeBC. Left of the Dot Media was nominated in the Best Workplace category, presented

by WellnessFits Advisor Websites.

Small Business BC asked British Columbians to nominate their favourite small businesses for the annual ERIC ZIMMER awards, between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30.

Businesses were given two months to gain as many votes as possible. Those who received the most votes have been named the top 10 semi-finalists.

The businesses will now move forward to face a panel of judges, who will review their applications and narrow down the competition to the top five finalists.

Is it a kite, a trapeze, or just hanging wires?

From Jan. 9 until Feb. 27, The ACT Art Gallery will be welcoming interpretations for its first exhibit of the year.

Exhibition Under Development includes a commissioned piece by two BC artists Amelia Epp and Aaron Moran.

The two mixed-media artists, who have never worked together before, created the elements of the site-specific installation independently, exhibit curator Barbara Duncan explained.

“They never actually put [the piece] together before this week,” said Duncan.

“The installation [was] the experimental aspect and everything came together.”

The commissioned piece is centred in the gallery as an aerial piece with coloured ropes.

“It’s really like a breath of fresh air, in a way,” Duncan said about the 3-D work.

Duncan added that the piece will mean different things to different people.

FUN LACROSSE This is a beginner-level, introductory program designed to introduce your son or daughter to lacrosse, and allow him or her to try the sport before registering for a full-season. The program is limited to children residing in Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge with no formal lacrosse experience, and born in years 2004-2012.

Program dates are Saturdays January 9 and 16 OR January 23 and 30 Check our website for your child’s time at rmburrards.com All sessions are at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre Gymnasium $25 registration fee for 2 sessions. Sessions include a souvenir t-shirt, juice box, and stick draw entry. **All Fun Lacrosse participants who register for a full lacrosse season will receive a new lacrosse stick (proof of registration will be required)** Lacrosse sticks are provided; however, your child must come with running shoes, comfortable clothing, and a protective helmet (hockey-type helmet is ideal, bike helmets are fine).

Ridge cyclist Belgium-bound Maggie Coles-Lyster has been training hard for a race.

There was no time off during the Christmas holidays for Maggie Coles-Lyster.

The 16-year old Maple Ridge native and competitive cyclist spent her holidays training in preparations for the up-coming World Cyclocross Championships on Jan. 30, in Zolder, Belgium.

She qualified for the Canadian team to compete at the World Championships by winning a bronze medal at the Canadian National Cyclocross championship back in October in Winnipeg, Man. Since then, Maggie has been honing her cyclocross skills and finished off the season strong with three consecutive victories, including taking the BC Elite Women’s Cyclocross Championship.

“I am excited about racing against the world’s best under 23-year old women in my first European bike race,” she exclaimed.

“I am also looking forward to the experience of racing at an event that draws crowds

OBITUARIES

With deepest sadness, the family of Keith Sutherland McNaughton announces his passing in Maple Ridge, BC on Jan. 1, 2016, age 77 after a struggle with cancer. Son of Ian and Nora (nee Adams) and later Elsie (nee Green), Keith will be profoundly missed by his loving wife Gail (nee Cooper), his three children, Tina (John Morrison), Derek (Elizabeth Simpson) and Shaun (Rhoda McNaughton), and his step-children, Brady Peden and Jocelyn Peden (Tak Shinyei) as well as his nine grandchildren, Dustin, Caitlyn (Derrick Gates), Christina, Liam, Myles, Valin, Matthew, Colin, Gracyn and two great grandchildren, Adyson and Jaxxon.

Keith was born in Sheffield, England on March 8, 1938.

After his mother’s death when he was seven, Keith was raised by his grandmother Christina (nee Sutherland) in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to Canada in the 1950s and married Linda (nee Lawton) in 1961, and later Gail in 1986 in Fort Sask., Alta. A millwright, Keith gave 35 years to Agrium’s Redwater Fertilizer Plant before retiring in 2002. His old friend Harold Walters, who for many decades was like a brother to Keith, will, like all Keith’s friends, be lost without him. Keith cultivated many friendships, which he loved and cherished. While a great many salmon and trout will be relieved today, everyone who knew Keith will mourn the passing of a man who wove tales as long and as large as the countless fish he caught, including the 42-pound Chinook that earned him a silver pin in the coveted Tyee Club. Aside from family and friends, Keith was passionate about many things - hummingbirds, cars, golf, sports, dogs, Scotch eggs, cold beer - but especially the telling of a good story or joke.

Many of those can be retold at a celebration of his life (instead of a funeral, as he requested) to be held in Fort Saskatchewan in the spring of 2016. Special thanks to Sandra Lyn Riches, plus staff at Mckenney Creek Hospice.

Birch, Keith Chandler It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather, Keith Birch passed away on December 24, 2015 at 71 years of age after a lengthy illness. Late of Maple Ridge, BC. He is predeceased by his parents Nan & Les, his sister Colleen & son Tyler. He is survived by his loving life partner Jacky Halliday, Brother Bob, Twin sister Natalia, Children Kim(Lou), Rob(Janice), Cindy(Aron) & John. He also had 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, friends & Mitzy.

Keith was born in Liverpool, England in 1944 & with his family immigrated to Canada when he was 11. His family settled in West Vancouver in 1968. After being hired as a sheet metal worker with the BC Government at Riverview Hospital he moved his young family to Maple Ridge. He designed, built & repaired medical furniture including a wheelchair for Pearson Hospital that assisted handicapped patients getting in & out of pools. He was very gifted with his hands and could make or fix anything.

He belonged to the Master Bowlers Association & for many years coached for the Maple Ridge Youth Bowlers Association. He was also a Leader for the Boy/Girl Scouts.

He loved to ski, fish & golf. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The family will be doing a private service at a future date.

Andrea Lynn Williams (Castelan) Born September 25th, 1951 in Vancouver BC. Passed away December 22nd, 2015. We will miss her happy easy nature, her smiles and her generosity. She was the only child to mother Gudrun and father Andrew who both predeceased her.

Andrea graduated from Vancouver Tech and began her working career at the Apprenticeship Branch, later at Medical Services Association working in Information Technology and retired in 2014 from School District 42 in Maple Ridge.

She grew up in East Vancouver, moved out on her own to Coquitlam, then in 1981 married husband Richard (TELUS retiree) and later relocated to Maple Ridge where they lived happily for 30 more years. She had 2 boys, Jesse and Cody. She loved vegetable gardening, cooking and watching cooking competition show, especially ones where kids were competing. She was an amazing cook and loved Christmas. Andrea was a loving mother and wife who will be sorely missed.

May her spirit light our hearts from up above.

With deepest sadness, his family announces Peter Bender's sudden death on December 19, 2015, age 33. He was the 4th child and only son of John and Sangsoon. A big baby brother to Anna, Katharine and Elizabeth. He was a husband, a tender loving father to Victoria & Xavier, and an uncle to his niece's Madison & Ava. He was a great friend and loved by so many familiar and also by those unknown. He was active in his church, always caring for others safety, and had helped many people during their time of need. In his short time, he made lifelong friends all across the globe, loved making new friends and always drawing people together. He loved sports, music, gym, watching movies and playing golf.

Peter will be missed dearly and we will cherish all the memories of him forever.

Prayers will be held Thursday, January 7th at 7:00 pm at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 20285 Dewdney Trunk Rd, Maple Ridge.

Funeral Mass will follow on Friday, January 8th at 11:00 am, also at St. Luke’s.
