Red Deer’s Old Court House marks 85 years Grand building remains a historic landmark in City’s downtown

T

he New Year brings with it a special anniversary for a historic building in the heart of downtown Red Deer.

Exuding a striking sense of grandeur, the Old Court House, located at the corner of Ross St. and 49th Ave. is 85 years old this year. The Old Court House, which housed both the Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench until 1983, has also been designated as a Provincial Historic Resource.

As local historian Michael Dawe explains, there was some lively debate about where the building should be situated prior to the onset of construction back in June of 1930. “City council agreed to arrange a land swap for four lots on the north side of Ross Street, half-way between 48th and 49th Avenues. However, the provincial government thought that this site was too small and too close to the A.G.T. telephone exchange building.”

It was then suggested the court house be built on 48th Ave. east of the current site of City Hall.

But that sat well with virtually no one, as it was thought the site was, “Too low and too hidden from the view of the main business district.

“Incidentally, this site, to which there was such a strong objection, is the same one where the new court house was built in 1981.”

The province suggested the corner of what is now City Hall Park, but council said that area was for City purposes only.

Finally, said Dawe, the then Premier of Alberta - John Brownlee - made a trip to Red Deer to negotiate with City officials and nail down a suitable spot once and for all.

“Yet another site, on the northeast corner of Ross St. and 49th Avenue, was picked. Finally, everyone agreed.”

At last, “The building officially opened with great fanfare on March 6th, 1931.”

Dawe said the building was, “The last court house constructed in Alberta with classical features, utilizing high quality materials such as red tapestry brick, red terra cotta roof tiles, marble for the main staircase and Tyndall limestone for the columns, entablature and trim.”

The building served the community well over the years, and was expanded at the back in the 1950s. But eventually the City’s growth made it necessary to have a much bigger facility. The new court house was completed by 1983. “The old court house remained empty for a couple of years, but finally an arrangement was made to sell the building to the City of Red Deer and turn it into a community centre.”

The site of many interesting trials and events over the years, the stately building retains its sense of grandeur in the heart of downtown Red Deer. photo submitted One of the most memorable events held at the court house was the famous murder trial of Robert Raymond Cook in 1959, who was convicted of killing his entire family in Stettler - his father Raymond and stepmother Daisy Cook and his five younger siblings who ranged in age from three to nine. The family was found shot and bludgeoned to death in the garage of their Stettler home.

Cook, who maintained his innocence until the very end, was retried later in Edmonton and again found guilty.

The last man to be hanged in Alberta, he was executed in November of 1960.

Back in 2001, a play about the crime was staged in the very courtroom in Red Deer that the actual proceedings took place in. The End of the Rope, penned by Aaron Coates, chronicles the experiences of Cook and his lawyer Dave MacNaughton during their 18-month battle to evade the noose. Cook had a history of clashes with the law during his short life — prior to the murders, he had been in prison on a robbery charge.

He was eventually apprehended on a farm near Bashaw by police after a sprawling, ambitious manhunt. He was then whisked away to the village’s police office.

He had been in the Ponoka hospital for a time but had escaped, and while he was

on the loose, tensions across the province really heated up. “That really got people worried. Where is he? Will there be other people attacked or murdered? It really was a horrible, horrible thing. So there was a massive manhunt to try and find him.”

To this day, questions linger as to Cook’s guilt. He claimed he was fighting a losing battle against a society hungry to pin someone with the crimes.

His alibi of being in Edmonton during the night of the murders also couldn’t be cracked, although pinpointing the times of the deaths wasn’t the exact science it is today. And although he reportedly didn’t always see eye to eye with his folks, some say it’s an enormous stretch to believe he would butcher his entire family.

In a letter to his lawyer, Cook wrote he, “Used to think it was up to the Crown to prove a person guilty, now, I believe different. I know they cannot prove me guilty, for in all truth, I am not. If I hang, murder will be committed in the name of the law.” Near the entrance of the Old Court House building, visitors can find a fascinating collection of newspaper clippings, letters and photos related to the case as well.

Meanwhile, the building, with its unmistakable sense of history, is now called the Old Court House Professional Centre, it now houses several organizations and

offices, including the building’s co-owner Richard McDonell of Reserve Fund Planners Ltd. McDonell has a deep appreciation and respect for the building, and points out that his office used to be the judge’s chambers connected to the courtroom.

“This is where Judge Peter Greschuk decided in 1959 that Robert Raymond Cook would hang by the neck until dead,” he noted, adding that years back he was testifying in a civil trial and was standing in the very spot where Cook had proclaimed his innocence.

Today, careful restoration work throughout the building has maintained the polished, sophisticated look of the past, regardless of the changes over the years and the changes in tenants.

And with the provincial designation as a historical resource, there are all kinds of rules as to what precisely can be done to the building as well.

“You really can’t do anything without prior written permission of the (provincial) minister,” he explained. “And we have not tried to push that envelope because we like that idea.”

For McDonell, it’s certainly more than just a place of business.

According to his sister who posted on facebook, Joe Bower, 37, suffered a heart attack last week. Since his death, online tributes have been pouring in including some from Alberta Party Leader Greg Clark, former Premier Dave Hancock, Liberal MP Kent Hehr and former PC Cabinet Minister Thomas Lukaszuk.

According to the Alberta Party web site, Bower was a fifth generation Albertan whose family has farmed in the Red Deer area for over 100 years. He wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I live east of Red Deer on our family farm with my wife Tamara and children Kayley and Sawyer. I have taught for 15 years in Red Deer which includes mostly middle school (Grades 6 and 8) and four years teaching in a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; inpatient psychiatric assessment unit. This year I am teaching Grade 6 and 8 language arts and social studies.â&#x20AC;?

Reflecting on the inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women Community officials discuss ways to strengthen vulnerable populations

BY KALISHA MENDONSA RED DEER EXPRESS Through January, the Red Deer Express is publishing a series involving several community groups and how the inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women affects them moving forward.

Interviews with local elders, community supports and City staff will be included to also help examine what the inquiry means for Red Deer as a whole.

Many communities across the country have been affected by missing and murdered women, but an important piece of finding out why this happens is exploring the social issues that perpetuate these tragic circumstances.

The people affected by these missing and murdered women are of First Nations, Metis and Aboriginal status but also come from a wide variety of other cultures. According to local First Nations elders, there are many roles for people to play in creating social change and seeking justice, not only within the Aboriginal community, but outside it as well.

This article features the perspectives of several local Elders in the community who have taken time to explain some of the ways they feel people can be involved in addressing and preventing the national issue that is missing and murdered Aboriginal women. As well, these conversations focus on moving forward towards reconciliation and changing attitudes in the community.

“I think each of us Elders has a different role to play because we each have a different perspective,” said local Elder Lyle Keewatin Richards.

“I’ve done a lot with politics and advocating over the years, but I don’t do sweats and ceremonies and those things. Each of us has a different sort of perspective on how we support the community.

“I think that’s a big thing how we support the community.

It’s about helping where people need the help.”

Keewatin Richards said one of the big questions he hears in the community, in terms of reconciliation and social change, is “What’s next?”

He said one of the main issues he sees as a resonating point of view is that Aboriginal and First Nations people are still being told to change, and their cultural identity is still not being accepted.

“There is a point of view that we need to be converted and changed. As long as people don’t see us as a legitimate way of being, where their way is better, there will always be a mistrust and misunderstanding of who we are. As long as people are seeking victory over us, that’s what will happen,” he said.

“People are still redefining who we are in society by defining who we are through the perspective of their heritage - not ours.”

Rodney Soonias, another community Elder, added to this notion by saying there is a gross misrepresentation of Aboriginal people within bodies of power in society.

“Our culture has been disenfranchised by every major facet of society for years. One of the issues in this City, and this country, is that First Nations people are under-represented in all major areas, from government, to health, to education, to law enforcement. There should be Aboriginal representation in education, the business community, City officials - all of it. It shouldn’t be something we have to beg for,” Soonias said.

The Elders recognized that within modern society, Aboriginal people still do not have much representation in areas that are deemed influential in a society - city or provincial government, the medical community, the provincial and local business community and more.

Soonias said that a small step ahead in preventing such issues as missing and murdered women is to have a better repre-

He listed the business community, language and heritage committees, medical communities, education and law enforcement of examples where he feels there needs to be more Aboriginal representation.

Another perspective of preventing the issue of missing and murdered women - among other issues - is creating a connection between those who identify as part of the Aboriginal community and those who don’t. Community Elder Theresa Jonasson Larsen said that people need to step outside of their comfort zones and learn more about creating a sense of belonging.

“First Nations and Metis people need a sense of belonging,” she said.

“They had such a divine connection to a land that was completely severed. Young people are really angry about what’s been handed to them - this violent history. What the language, the singing and ceremony re-

minds them is that before all of that anger, there was beauty. We come from a beautiful, beautiful people and we need to remind young people of that.”

Jonasson Larsen said that a big passion of hers, and where she feels her role as an Elder is, is working with youth and empowering women in the community.

She said she feels people need to become more connected to creating a place where people feel like they belong in the community.

“I would really encourage people to get out of their comfort zones and sit in on things. Get in on the meetings and discussions and together we can start to move these things along a little quicker,” she said.

“We all have to get more active.”

Lynn Jonasson, another community Elder present in the discussion, said another way to combat issues of missing and murdered women is to let go of the anger that he sees still present in the community.

“There is so much anger and other feelings that we get rid of through ceremonies. We try to heal through the sweat lodges, and the songs, hearing our language and having the places that we need to heal,” he said.

Jonasson works with people with addictions, and said this experience has given him some insight into facilities Red Deer could benefit from. Two of those examples are an addictions treatment centre, and a culturally-based women’s centre. He says both of these would help the community to address underlying issues that lead to women being hurt.

The Elders in the Red Deer community often take on many roles - teachers, advocates, counsellors, friends and more. They are a small part of the community that seeks justice towards missing and murdered women and are pivotal in the community for recognizing the needs of those who reach out to them.

OPINION January marks Alzheimer Awareness month Watching a loved one endure a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease is, at any time, painful.

January is Alzheimer Awareness Month - Dr. Alois Alzheimer first identified the disease in 1906.

According to Alzheimer Society of Alberta, he described the two hallmarks of the disease - ‘plaques’ - which are numerous tiny, dense deposits scattered throughout the brain that become toxic to brain cells at excessive levels, and ‘tangles,’ which interfere with vital processes, eventually choking off the living cells.

When brain cells degenerate and die, the brain markedly shrinks in some regions.

Alzheimer’s disease is a fatal disease that eventually affects all aspects of a person’s life: how they think, feel, and act. Each person is affected differently. It is difficult to predict symptoms, the order in which they will appear, or the speed of their progression.

The following are some of the changes that may be expected as the disease pro-

gresses, according to the Society.

Cognitive and functional abilities: a person’s ability to understand, think, remember and communicate will be affected.

This could impact a person’s ability to make decisions, perform simple tasks, or follow a conversation. Sometimes people lose their way, or experience confusion and memory loss, initially for recent events and eventually for long-term events.

Emotions and moods - a person may appear apathetic and lose interest in favourite hobbies. Some people become less expressive and withdrawn.

Behaviour - a person may have reactions that seem out of character. Some common reactions include repeating the same action or words, hiding possessions, physical outbursts and restlessness.

Physical abilities - the disease can affect a person’s coordination and mobility, to the point of affecting their ability to perform day-to-day tasks such as eating, bathing and getting dressed.

Red Deerian Larry Quintilio lost his wife

June to Alzheimer’s a couple of years ago.

She was only in her 60s, and the symptoms had begun to surface several years prior to her death.

In the time since his wife’s passing, Larry has become involved with Early Onset Dementia Alberta, a group committed to raising awareness of the fact that many people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s are relatively young. A major conference was hosted by the group in Red Deer last fall.

In some cases, they can be paying mortgages or even raising families and have all kinds of financial responsibilities.

Such a devastating diagnosis – which most people tend to think strikes relatively late in life – can mean a whole range of issues and challenges along with the actual process of dealing with the disease itself.

Sometimes, as Quintilio has pointed out, the spouse of someone suffering with Alzheimer’s not only has to scramble to pay the bills, but they also have to hire additional help to care for their loved one.

Other issues that must be explored include forms of home care, long-term care, diagnosis and medical support and just the overall lack of services and programming that is out there. As pointed out by the group, “Issues arise because the typical supports for dementia are based on the belief that patients (and their caregivers) are in their senior years, have adult children, are financially stable and have retired.”

Of course, any time of year is the right time to discuss Alzheimer’s disease and its implications on families and society as a whole. But as mentioned, January marks Alzheimer Awareness Month, so efforts to build awareness move to a higher level over the next few weeks.

It’s a vital conversation – with an aging population, more and more cases are expected to surface in the coming decades. Which demands more exploration of such pressing issues as long-term care and helping families meet the financial obligations of dealing with an early diagnosis.

Canada needs to better manage health system’s workforce The growing talk of a new health care accord between the federal government and the provinces and territories is great news, but any accord won’t be a success unless it includes the establishment of a dedicated health workforce agency in Canada.

Such a workforce agency is a reality in pretty much every other country except Canada, and we need one badly.

The reasons should be obvious, since we all experience our health system through its people, our health workers.

Care is delivered by a health worker or, more often, a group of health workers, each offering their skills and expertise. In simple economic terms, the workforce makes up the bulk of health system costs - from doctors’ fees to nurses’ salaries, from

personal support workers in long-term care centres to dietitians in the community.

And that is why it is surprising that we put so few resources into planning how the people who make up our health system can best work, and best work together, to better meet the needs of patients.

Why do we not dedicate even a fraction of what we put paid health workers into co-ordinated planning for their services?

Don’t forget that for many Canadian health workers, the taxpayer also provides

public funding for their education. But too often when the newly-minted health professionals are ready to work, only those patients who have private health insurance can access their services.

It is surprising how little Canadian governments plan for the number and type of health workers we need now and in the future. The list runs from the medical specialists for an aging population with multiple chronic conditions, to the physiotherapists, occupational therapists and personal support workers to enable older adults to remain independent in their own homes.

A dismayingly tiny fraction of the $1 billion a year spent on health research goes toward better understanding its most valuable resource — its people, the

health human resources.

And here’s the kicker: pretty much every country in the world has an agency or organization dedicated to knowing as much as it can about its health workforce so they are best able to meet the needs of that country’s population. Rich countries and poor countries alike have these organizations.

Such agencies are especially important for poor countries because they have to make the most out of the few health workers they have.

But Canada, it seems, can afford to get it wrong, over and over again.

Canada certainly does have a number of organizations doing a small part of the job of a health human resources agency, but it is far from a co-ordinated and sustained effort.

For example, we have had three task forces in the

past 20 years dedicated to examining the physician workforce.

Yet we still have highly-trained surgical specialists who have difficulty finding operating room time.

And many Canadians still go abroad for medical training. And too many communities still don’t have family physicians.

We don’t need another short-term task force to manage the health worker supply. We need effective and ongoing management of our entire health workforce.

The health human resources crisis is not simply a supply problem.

There are issues with how the workforce is best utilized. Some of that is about distribution - getting the right kind of workers to the right places to treat the people who can most benefit from their skills.

There are also issues with how we can better enable health staff to work with each other and better address the increasingly complex health issues our population faces.

Finding the best evidence to support the best approaches to more equitable and efficient use of the whole health workforce is what a national agency could examine.

So when the various stakeholders gather to discuss what should go into a new health accord, this time the health workforce should be front and centre.

CITY BRIEFS CHRISTMAS TREE PICKUP STARTING Members of Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity will once again provide a voluntary Christmas tree pickup service to Red Deer homes. Residents can place Christmas trees on their front lawn for pickup from Jan. 8th to Jan. 22nd.

“Christmas tree pickup is not a City-funded service, so we really rely on the generosity of Red Deerians’ donations to keep this annual campaign alive as the increase in artificial trees our donations have rapidly declined over the last ten years,” said Dan Henschel, Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity.

Donations to the Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity can be made directly to the firefighter picking up your tree, or mailed in the pre-addressed envelope left in your mailbox.

Receipts are issued for donations upon request. Donations to the Red Deer Firefighters Children’s Charity are used to support local children’s charities.

“On behalf of the Red Deer Firefighters and Local 1190, we thank all residents who partake in this charity event and for their continued support,” said Henschel.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT AVAILABLE Red Deerians can take a look at the City’s environmental progress with the release of the Environmental Master Plan Report to the Community 2014.

The annual report titled ‘Our Environment, Our Role: 2014 Report to the Community’ highlights both achievements and improvements that need to be made in the Environmental Master Plan’s seven focus areas - water, ecology, transportation, built environment, air, energy and waste.

Red Deer’s number of building permits in November were about the same as in 2014, but the value was down significantly. A strong public sector, however, continues to keep total permit values so far this year ahead of the same period last year.

From January to November of last year, the total of all permits were valued at $228,310,172 compared to $186,832,796 for the same period in 2014.

Residential permits continue to lag behind 2014’s values, with November 2015 seeing a 46% drop in values over 2014.

Commercial permit values were similar to November 2014, with notable work including renovations to the Tim Horton’s at 22nd St. and Taylor Drive and the planned installation of a paint booth at Break Away Hot Shot in the Burnt Lake Industrial Park.

POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY ATTEMPTS

Red Deer RCMP are investigating three failed robbery attempts at three different convenience stores last night between 11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 30th by a man wearing a black garbage bag wrapped around his head or a black hoodie.

The suspect entered the Fas Gas at 4023 50th St. at approximately 11 p.m., demanded cash and threatened staff. He did not produce a weapon. When he was told there was no cash in the till, he left on foot, heading south on 41st Ave. The suspect was described as a Caucasian male, 20-25 years old, wearing a black garbage bag over his head and a black jacket over a black hoodie.

At approximately 11:15 p.m., a man entered the 7 Eleven located at 3803 40th Ave. and demanded cash from the till.

The staff member refused and said he was hitting the panic button. The suspect then attempted unsuccessfully to grab lottery tickets but left empty handed, heading southbound on foot along 40th Ave. The suspect was described as approximately 5’5” tall, about 150-180 lbs. with a stocky build, wearing a dark coloured hoodie and a black garbage bag over his face.

Next, RCMP received a call that a man attempted to rob the Express 24 on Erickson Drive at approximately 11:40 p.m.

A man carrying a tire iron entered the store and demanded money. The staff member refused and struck at the man with a broom. The suspect left empty handed and was seen going southbound on foot along Erickson Drive.

The suspect was described as a shorter man, approximately 5’8” tall, wearing a black hooded sweater pulled tightly over his face.

At this point, RCMP believe the failed robberies were likely committed by the same suspect.

Police continue to investigate and will issue updates as the investigation continues and more information becomes available.

Police believe this same person is responsible for at least three other local recent robberies. On Dec. 13th, a man matching this same description robbed the Plaza Liquor Store in Sylvan Lake. On Dec. 27th, this same man returned and again robbed the Plaza Liquor Store.

On Dec. 29th, the CIBC branch was robbed by a male matching this same description.

SYLVAN LAKE RCMP SEEK SUSPECT

A Red Deer man faces a number of charges after Red Deer RCMP located him in a stolen car and in possession of a loaded shotgun.

Police were patrolling in the Normandeau area shortly before 2 a.m. on Dec. 30th when they located the suspect driving a red Toyota Corolla that had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on Dec. 29th.

When the suspect vehicle pulled into a parking lot on the 6700 block of 59th Ave. police blocked it in, preventing the suspect’s brief attempt to flee.

On Jan. 4th at 5:49 p.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a complaint of a robbery at the Lakeway Liquor Store in Sylvan Lake. Investigation has determined that a lone male walked in the store and approached the lone employee and demanded cash from the till. He placed the money in a bag and left the scene on foot. No weapon was displayed during this robbery and no one was hurt.

DEATH RULED A HOMICIDE An autopsy was completed Dec. 29th regarding the death of 46-year-old Thomas Patrick Braconnier which occurred on Dec. 25th.

The Medical Examiner has concluded that this death is as a result of a homicide. The Red Deer RCMP and RCMP Serious Crimes Branch (South) continue to investigate this matter.

The RCMP continue to appeal to the public to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575, or their local police, or Crime Stoppers if they have any information that may assist the police in this investigation.

DRUG TRAFFICKING ARRESTS In the early morning hours of Dec. 27th, RCMP pulled over a vehicle for numerous violations.

other, and were in possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

Police seized cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, MDMA (ecstasy) and numerous prescription pills from the vehicle.

One adult and one minor have been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

John Boisvert of Red Deer has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failing to comply with numerous conditions of a recognizance, possession for the purpose of trafficking Oxycontin, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, oxycodone, MDMA, marijuana and prescription drugs.

The minor cannot be identified due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but has been charged with failing to comply with numerous conditions of a recognizance, possession for the purpose of trafficking Oxycontin, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, oxycodone, MDMA, marijuana and prescription drugs.

RCMP ARREST MAN FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER On Dec. 27th, Innisfail RCMP arrested 45-year-old Edward Dwayne Heywood of no fixed address on an outstanding charge of attempted murder, for an offence that took place Dec. 21st near Eckville.

At approximately 11 p.m., the RCMP were conducting routine patrols in the town of Bowden when they spotted Heywood in a stolen GMC Sierra truck on Cottonwood Road near RR 10.

When police attempted to pull the vehicle over it failed to stop and a pursuit began out of Bowden where the truck struck a

power pole, unoccupied parked vehicle and an electrical box.

The vehicle continued onto Hwy. 2A where police were able to deploy a spike belt to ensure public safety which the fleeing vehicle drove over.

The truck then drove into an open field where the deflating tires brought the vehicle to a stop. Heywood then fled on foot where he was arrested at approximately 11:30 p.m., a short distance later by RCMP members who had followed him on foot into the field.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, he will face a number of criminal code charges as a result of the police pursuit and arrest. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant issued by Olds RCMP for assault, assault with a weapon and uttering threats in an unrelated investigation.

ROBBERY AT FAS GAS Red Deer RCMP are investigating a robbery that took place at an east side Fas Gas Dec. 15th shortly before 9 p.m.

The suspect approached the till and demanded cash then left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money; he was last seen heading northwest behind the building, which is located at 3020 22nd St. He did not display a weapon and no one was injured in this robbery.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 5’6” - 5’8” tall and was wearing sunglasses, a tuque, a dark coat with the hood up and heavy gloves.

The investigation is ongoing, and RCMP ask anyone with information to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575.

He was taken into custody without incident, and police seized a loaded shotgun, ammunition and a replica firearm from the vehicle.

Wig Lending Program looking to build awareness

A LITTLE BIT BETTER - Kathy Potters said she is thankful for the Wig Lending Program at the Canadian Cancer Society because it helps her live each day with a little more confidence. Potters began chemotherapy seven months ago which has caused her to lose some of her hair - she said the wig program helps her to push through that loss.

Some of our clients are really attached to their hair, and love it. For them to lose it is devastating. We’ve had a good few tears in that room, but we get to send people home smiling. It’s a very rewarding program.”

Each client receives information they can take home to prop-

erly clean and take care of the wigs. Volunteers like Menezes are available to help at every step of the emotional process and for any questions one might have.

Potters said the wig bank has helped her deal with a stagefour diagnosis of both liver and lung cancer.

“I’ve just gone off my pill for chemotherapy. I took it everyday for seven months and I had terrible, terrible side effects. Two weeks ago I decided that how the CAT scan turned out would

be my decision as to whether I carry on with it or not. the CAT scan showed that the tumor on my liver has grown,” she shared quietly.

“For the next six weeks, I just want to have a life. It’s not the same as your own hair but it helps.”

Volunteers and clients alike are hoping to get the word out about the Wig Lending Program at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS).

The service offers high-quality wigs for cancer patients, at no cost and with a large variety of options. One client, Kathy Potters, said the program has helped her through a difficult time.

“I’ve had a really hard time with this. I still can’t believe it but it’s here,” Potters said, referring to her diagnosis.

“The first time you come in, you’re very, very nervous. It’s a whole new experience. It’s scary because it means cancer.”

She offered a bit of advice to potential clients.

“What you do is bring somebody with you - a family member - and the girls here are really good. Once I found out it was here, and that all the wigs are clean, I couldn’t get over the number of wigs they have here.

There’s human hair and the synthetic ones, and they all wash beautifully.”

Potters found out about the Wig Lending Program through a separate Cancer Society program called Look Good, Feel Better.

She said at first she was hesitant about the hygienic factor of wigs, but soon became at ease with the help of the friendly staff at the CCS. One of those friendly staff members is Carol Ann Menezes, whose job is to give the clients a positive experience and make them feel confident when they leave the building.

“I like to make it fun for the women. I’ve welcomed people near or in tears and we’ve sent them home happy and confident and ready to face the world. I

make it like a fashion show for them and we try all sorts of wigs on,” Menezes said.

“There was a little elderly lady who came in and said, ‘My husband wants me to go red!’ and we have a huge, red wig and we put that on her and took a photo.

We sent it to him and she went home with a little grey wig. We had so much fun with it,” she laughed.

Right now, the Canadian Cancer Society is looking for a volunteer to assist with the wig bank. Menezes said their regular volunteer is on leave until April and that they could really use the help.

As well, she said she wished more people knew about and accessed the program.

“We’ve given out about 100 wigs this year. The thing is many people don’t know about our wig bank, and they only hear about it through word of mouth or maybe at the hospital. We’re really trying to spread the word that we’re here,” she said.

“If you buy a wig privately, it can be between $300-$600. And when you’re going through cancer, not a lot of people have that money. It is expensive to get treatment and medication. Just to buy a wig is so expensive, so I’m really proud that we can actually offer this service.”

All of the wigs are free and are donated to the local CCS branch. The wigs are a collection of both synthetic and natural human hair. All of the hair that is donated is sent to Ontario to be sterilized and styled by the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. The wigs are then donated back to the organization, and sent across Canada for women like Potters.

Remembering the start of the New Year back in 1916 Another New Year is now upon us. A number of significant challenges appear to be ahead for 2016, particularly in the realms of the economy and the threat of terrorism. However, the situation is still not as severe as the one faced by the residents of Central Alberta one hundred

The biggest crisis in 1916 was the ongoing First World War. Millions of men were mired in trenches in Northern France and Belgium. Huge battles were fought, only to have the front lines move a short distance either one way or the other.

The loss of life was massive.

Advances in technology had made the killing of men much more â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;efficientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The situation was made even worse by the seeming inability of the generals to adjust to such advanced weaponry and tactics as massed machine guns and poison gas.

Many of the young men who had enlisted in Central Alberta were particularly at risk. They had joined cavalry and mounted rifle units such as the 35

When they first went into action in the late spring of 1915, at such horrific battles as St. Julien and Gravenstafel during the Second Battle of Ypres, the Canadians suffered a casualty rate of more than 1/3. The Canadians had won high praise for holding the line in the face of the first poison gas attack.

However, their success was due more to their incredible bravery and tenacity, rather than the tactics they have been taught as mounted rifle units.

Tragically, the Allied leadership seemed to miss the obvious lessons of these early battles.

Instead, much of the first part of 1916 was spent preparing for the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;big pushâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The generals had convinced themselves that victory could be obtained by one massive frontal attack on the entrenched enemy positions.

As was almost inevitable, the plans ended in disaster during the astonishing Battle of the Somme in the summer of 1916.

The British Army suffered 57,470 casualties on just the first day of the grand assault and an average of nearly 3,000 on each of the following days of the months-long battle. Fifty young men from Red Deer and district lost their lives at the Somme and nearly three times that number

were wounded. The situation at home was also grim. The high unemployment rates of 19131914 had dropped off sharply as the young men flocked to enlist.

However, this masked the on-going economic problems.

After the collapse of the prewar real estate boom, the City of Red Deer struggled to collect property taxes. Civic debt levels shot up. By the end of 1915, the per capita debt stood at $124 (about $2,800 in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dollars).

The Bank of Montreal warned that if significant measures were not soon taken, the per capita debt levels could soon soar to more than $200 (i.e. $4,600 in 2016 dollars).

While the City did impose a number of budgetary reductions such as staff lay-offs and salary freezes, there were a number of unavoidable expenses.

Most importantly, the City faced significant capital costs in converting the Red Deer fairgrounds into a military training centre. Although the Armouries on 49 St. and 48 Ave. (now the Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Library) had been completed at the start of 1914, they were simply too small to handle the large numbers of new recruits for the war.

Quickly converting the livestock and exhibits buildings at the fairgrounds was the only practical solution for housing the hundreds of new recruits necessary for the War effort.

One sector of the local business community was particularly hard hit in 1915-1916.

That was the hotel business.

On July 21st, 1915, Albertans had voted in favour of a ban on the general sale of liquor. Although Prohibition did not come fully into effect until July 1, 1916, the hotels soon felt the pinch. In the early weeks of the New Year, auction sales were held to convert extra furniture and fixtures into cash. Few were willing to invest in the hotel trade when they knew an enormous cash crunch and potential bankruptcy was only a few months away.

ENTERTAINMENT Theory of a Deadman heads to Red Deer this month Continuing to make their artistic mark on the Canadian musical landscape and well beyond, Theory of a Deadman bring their current tour to Red Deer on Jan. 24th. The show follows a swing through the City late last year as well.

They perform at the Memorial Centre, with tickets available at the Black Knight Inn Ticket Centre.

Based on the west coast, the guys (Tyler Connolly - vocals/guitar; Dean Back bass; David Brenner - guitar and Joe Dandeneau - drums) first joined forces back in 2001.

So far, they have a total of eight top 10 hits on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, including three number one hits, Bad Girlfriend, Lowlife and Angel.

In the middle of 2013, the quartet began working on what would become its fifth full-length album, Savages.

However, everything in their lives rapidly and unexpectedly changed.

Whether it be a shakeup at their label, waning interest in rock at radio, or the downturn of society at large, a myriad of issues weighed heavy on the guys.

So, Connolly channeled it all into his songwriting.

“It’s such a different record for us,” he asserts. “I’m known as the guy who writes all of the ‘breakup’ songs. It would have been typical to write more, so I did just the opposite.

“There’s something very brutal about our culture. I got nightmares from Terminator as a kid and, now, you can watch real murders on YouTube. We’re so desensitized. I went from writing about crazy women to how screwed up we are.

That’s the theme. I’d spend 20 hours a day at my home studio. I became a weird recluse, and I even grew a beard. I dug in deeper than ever for these songs.”

Once again teaming with super producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Halestorm) in the studio, he tapped into the same robust riffing and primal power that coursed through the group’s 2008 platinum-certified breakthrough, Scars & Souvenirs—which yielded the number one Mainstream Rock Radio smash Bad Girlfriend as well as So Happy and By The Way. Lyrically, Connolly turned his attention to the state of the world around him and churned out the band’s catchiest and most crushing statement yet.

“This is Theory of a Deadman on steroids but not with the shrunken balls and b-acne side effects,” he assures. “It’s

This nodded back to our early material but with more musicality. I got to write about something other than relationships too, and I was excited to tackle new material.

“I tried to get up every morning and write a song, and that lasted three days before I quit,” he chuckles. “I wrote Drown during the second day. It’s about being alone and finding contentment within that. It’s a metaphor. No one cares if you drown or not. It’s based on how I felt at the time.”

Meanwhile, the title track functions as the album’s clarion call, and it enlists a chilling spoken word and hypnotic harmony from none other than the legendary Alice Cooper. Connolly said it was an amazing experience to work with the rock veteran.

“I had never met him before,” recalls Connolly. “I got to fly to his house in Phoenix and work on the song. He’s a

super nice guy. I stole the spoken word idea from Vincent Price in Thriller. Alice killed it. I was so happy to work with him.”

The album does uphold a tradition for Theory of a Deadman, bringing another ballad to the fold, though it’s not a ‘breakup song’ per se.

This time, Angel swings from a bright guitar into a heavenly refrain about a different kind of love.

“I thought about being in love with an angel and how bad of an idea that actually is,” he explains.

“Once you fall back to earth, you realize you have nothing in common, and you have to let her go.”

At the same time, they also stomp into new territory altogether with their first-ever proper ‘country’ track. For Livin’ My Life Like a Country Song, the boys enlisted the guitar and vocal talents of Rascal Flatts’ Joe Don Rooney.

“We’ve always had a bit of Southern rock swagger,” he goes on. “In this case, Joe Don Rooney countrified it, and it turned out great. We wanted to give our take on how all of these country songs are about losing your woman and your house. All you’ve got left is a case of beer, your dog, and your trailer. She’s gone, and you’re living your life like a country song!”

That songwriting prowess solidified Theory of a Deadman as a major contender in modern rock since their self-titled 2002 debut.

Most recently, 2011’s The Truth Is… landed in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart upon its debut, while topping the ‘Top Rock Albums’, ‘Top Alternative Albums’ and ‘Top Hard Rock Albums’ charts.

In addition, it spawned the number one radio hit Lowlife, which ruled Rock Radio for three weeks straight.

John McDermott brings his â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Traditionally Yoursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tour to City Singer John McDermott will be venturing out for a spring tour which includes Red Deer. The concert runs May 20th at the Red Deer Memorial Centre.

The tour features songs from his latest release, Traditionally Yours, as well as a variety of favourites from his vast recording catalogue.

Besides his musical career, he is also known for his commitment to veteransâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; causes - the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honour Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bob Hope Award, the Ted Williams Globe & Anchor Award from the USMC and, here at home, a commendation from the Minister of Veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Affairs for this ongoing work, which includes his foundation McDermott House Canada, dedicated to improving care in the final stages of terminal illness and providing a warm, welcoming place to stay for Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s veterans, military, first responders and their families.

Looking back to his start, McDermott can recall the moment when he realized he had made the right decision to make singing his

full-time career.

It was at the Rebecca Cohn Theatre in Halifax as he walked on stage to a full house and a thunderous East Coast welcome. It was the first concert with his own band, following a year as the opening act for Irish group The Chieftains.

McDermott was thrilled the Halifax crowd was so enthusiastic.

Not that many years before, he had been working in the circulation department of one of Torontoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily newspapers.

As a creative outlet, he would sing a few Irish and Scottish folk tunes at staff gatherings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; songs he had learned growing up in Willowdale, Ontario after his family moved there from Glasgow, Scotland.

The only musical training he received was when he attended St. Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choir School in Toronto for two years. But the turning point in terms of career was sparked when he recorded an album of Irish and Scottish ballads as a 50th wedding anniversary gift for his parents.

Those who heard the album encouraged him to have it produced commer-

cially. A couple of entertainment business heavyweights, Michael Cohl and Bill Ballard, had been impressed with his singing at a Karaoke Night during the Toronto Floating Film Festival a couple of years earlier. So he took the album to Ballard, who put him in touch with the president of EMI Music Canada.

EMI released 2,000 copies on Nov. 10th, 1992. The next day being Remembrance Day, the late broadcaster Peter Gzowski played three tracks from the CD. The stores couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep it on the shelves.

A few months later, CBCTV profiled him in a short piece that was aired on the The National. Within a short time the CD had sold more than 50,000 copies.

McDermott took a leave from his job to tour with The Chieftains. At the end of that tour, he sat down with Cohl and Ballard and looked at the numbers.

They knew that if they put him on a national tour, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be on his way.

Since the beginning of his musical journey, McDermott has recorded more than 25 albums.

And although he emerged during a time of resurgence in Celtic music, and much of his tunes retain

that kind of charming feel, he has been careful not to pigeonhole himself as a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Celtic artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; per se.

Things women can do to balance hormones I’ll just cut to it here. Women that generally have better balanced hormones have less stress, have an easier time losing body fat and are more adapt to change. That’s why we need to talk this.

In this busy world we live in today it is sometimes difficult to simply take a moment for ourselves. It’s so often that we (and today let’s focus on women) sometimes don’t even realize that our hormones are out of whack. And when we do realize it we don’t always realize why.

Health and fitness are such a key ingredient to keeping our hormones in check and that is why I am writing this article. I wanted to dig into not only why are hormones are sometimes all over the map but more so I wanted to find what exactly can we do to truly find balance.

First of all, let’s just break down the basics, although you

The problem with today is it’s so easy to get lost in a sea of Internet junk with fitness ‘gurus’ just telling you what they have heard and no backing behind it - let’s avoid that today. So to make it simple I am going to give you the top five things that women can do today to start balancing hormones in a healthy natural way. #1 Eat beautiful broccoli - veggies such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and bok choy have an ingredient named indole-3-carinal which when broken down in the body

produces Diindolymethane. Not only are these ingredients have anti-cancer effects especially in breast cancer, but they help keep estrogen levels normal. Eating products natural in their earth form is medicine in and of itself! #2 Eat phytoestrogen foods - flax seeds, bean sprouts, legumes, sunflower seeds, peas, and garbanzo beans are all plant based phytoestrogens. So what exactly do phytoestrogens do?

Exactly what you want them to do, they naturally balance hormone levels. #3 Exercise regularly - now this may seem obvious as we hear it time and time again but there is a reason exercise is so important. Excess fat actually has the ability to act as its very own endocrine organ, meaning that is has the ability to produce more estrogen in the body then is actually needed and this can have many harmful effects. So take those moments during the day for a little you time in some peace and quiet and just connect with yourself. #5 Things to avoid - while proper exercise and nutrition are a main part of the equation

Will a drink a day keep the doctor away?

We’ve been told for years that a nutritious apple a day helps to keep the doctor away. But could alcohol have the same result during this New Year?

JONES Or, is alcohol a wolf in sheep’s clothing, detrimental to our well-being? I recently mentioned during a talk that I believed that alcohol in moderation was the best medicine ever invented. The audience responded with a big applause. But was it justified?

Critics damn alcohol because

patients who consumed either four ounces of liquor, 12 ounces of wine or 40 ounces of beer or less a day had fewer coronary deaths than non-drinkers.

Another researcher, Dr. Joseph Barboniak from the College of Medicine of Wisconsin, studied the coronary arteries of 2,000 patients. He concluded alcohol helps to clear the rust out of the heart’s arteries.

I like to remember this study.

Researchers collected 100 identical twins with only one major difference. One twin was a moderate drinker, the other a teetotaler and their health was followed for years. Finally the project had to be discontinued.

Why? Because all the non-drinkers had died! Moderate amounts

some people abuse it. I agree when people are killed by drunken drivers. But no one bans cars because some idiots cause needless deaths. My research on alcohol dates back many years.

Why? Because I’ve always enjoyed a moderate drink and wanted to know if it was evil or medicinal. In 1981, Dr. Arthur Klasky, chief of cardiology at the Kaiser Permanente Center in California, said, “There is no evidence that one or two drinks a day is harmful. There is fairly strong evidence that alcohol may decrease the chance of heart attack.”

Dr. Charles Hennekens at The Harvard Medical School agreed.

He reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that

Possibly more important, alcohol makes blood platelets, tiny particles that are part of the blood coagulation process, more slippery so they’re less likely to form a fatal blood clot. There are also over 20 studies that show moderate drinkers live longer than teetotalers and those who abuse alcohol. Other researchers disagree. They say the alcohol-coronary relationship is just another gimmick. In effect, it’s similar to theories suggesting that corn oil, brewer’s yeast and garlic are effective preventive measures.

Other critics contend that personality is more important than alcohol consumption.

For instance, relaxed people

have fewer heart attacks and they’re also moderate drinkers.

On the other hand, Type A individuals, who want to conquer the world, are often heavy drinkers. What about those who have survived a heart attack?

If this event destroyed a significant amount of cardiac muscle, then the pumping action of the heart has lost some strength.

The last thing needed is the loss of more strength resulting in congestive heart failure.

Studies show too that excessive drinking does damage cardiac muscle. This is why drinking days should cease. Others suggest that if there are no symptoms of failure, ‘moderate’ drinking is a reasonable option.

New Maternity Home Program for young mothers

BY ERIN FAWCETT RED DEER EXPRESS A new maternity home for young, single pregnant women has recently opened in Red Deer via the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre.

The Maternity Home Program, which is an extension of the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre programming, offers a facility with four bedrooms with private bathrooms. The home also in-

cludes a communal kitchen, living area and house parents quarters.

“The goal of this program is to offer a safe and stable home for single pregnant women,” said Anne Waddell, executive director of the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre. “We are looking at breaking patterns and we know that single parenting is a big issue and it’s very high in Central Alberta.”

She added mothers accepted into the program will be contributing as they stay at the Maternity Home.

“There will be a plan laid out for them of either schooling whether it be high school or a trade or volunteering. There will be guidelines laid out,” said Waddell.

“There will also be curfews that they will need to abide by and they will contribute (monetarily) as much as they can so they can be taught the value of budgeting and managing their money.”

Bunnie Wigley, Maternity Home director, said there is a process in which the mothers are chosen to go into the program.

“First of all they have to be clients here at the pregnancy care centre and they can’t be responsible for any other children. They may have other children, but they are not currently responsible for them. They also have to be free of addictions for at least one year and there can be no violence in their background because it has to be safe for all residents.”

pecting mothers and mothers with newborns. ”We started asking our clients that were abortion vulnerable and whose circumstances were so overwhelming - we had an in-house survey that asked what if we had a safe, stable place to stay until you at least carried to term? Because then we have nine months to help them decide whether to put the baby up for adoption or to equip them to parent successfully,” said Waddell. “Often our clients sometimes choose to carry to term but without the proper support or being equipped, the children are apprehended into foster care. We’re trying to break those patterns.

“The response from our clients was overwhelming in terms of how much this was needed.”

Phase two of the Maternity Home will break ground next fall and will be a three-storey building, which will be connected to phase one of the project.

Mothers are able to stay for up to two years in this second phase. “That will allow for four one-bedroom apartments and seven bachelor suites,” said Waddell.

“Here they will be transitioning into a little bit more of an independent living and to be better equipped to be totally functional with cooking, budgeting and having a safe environment for their children until they are fully able to transition

SPORTS Rebels see shake ups as trade deadline looms

BY ZACHARY CORMIER RED DEER EXPRESS Last week was a busy one for the Red Deer Rebels.

With the WHL trade deadline just a week away, the team has begun loading up for their Memorial Cup run, making no less than four moves in the past week alone.

It all kicked off on Dec. 27th when Rebels GM and Head Coach Brent Sutter announced the team had acquired forward Jake DeBrusk from the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for Lane Pederson, a first round pick in the 2017 Bantam Draft and a third round pick in 2016.

“I’m loving it. I haven’t been here for too long and I already like it. It’s Alberta, so back close to home. I just really like it and, you know, I’m really excited about joining the team and helping to win some games here and make a push,” DeBrusk said.

The addition of DeBrusk brings even more firepower to an already explosive Rebels offence that already has the third best goal differential in the league.

DeBrusk has wasted no time making an impact on the roster.

Debrusk potted a pair of goals and an assist in his first two games as a Rebel.

“It’s always nice to get some points, especially with a new team. That’s one of the things that I was told. You don’t want to be waiting too long to get the first goal or things like that,” DeBrusk said during an interview last week.

The next day the Rebels added 17-year-old forward Taden Rattie of Airdrie from the Portland Winterhawks for a fourth round pick in 2016.

Rattie’s brother, Ty Rattie, is a St. Louis Blues prospect who put up 348 points over four seasons with the Winterhawks and is currently playing up and down with the Blues and their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

But the two Ratties could not be more different in their playing styles. While Ty is a pure goal

scorer who at one point held the Alberta Bantam scoring record, Taden takes a slightly more aggressive approach.

The WHL rookie stands an imposing 6’4”, making him the tallest player on the Rebels’ roster.

He’s also not afraid to get his hands dirty, racking up 212 PIMs in the AJHL so far this season.

The trade frenzy continued late last week when the Rebels finalized a deal that sent captain Wyatt Johnson, prospect Eli Zummack, a 2016 second and a 2017 fifth to the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for 20-yearold Adam Helewka, another high scoring forward.

“To get something really good you’ve got to give up assets to do it and unfortunately it’s taken a player and a person like Wyatt out of our dressing room. That part stings, no question about it,” Sutter said during a press conference on Thursday. He added that giving up a good young prospect and a second round pick was no small decision either.

“With that being said, we’re getting a player that from our standpoint is probably one of the top three players in our league and a forward, a big forward that puts up numbers. He’s a gamebreaker,” he said.

Helewka was Spokane’s leading goal scorer with 13 goals and 16 assists in 19 games this season.

The big winger made his Rebels debut last Saturday night, playing on a line with DeBrusk and leading scorer Ivan Nikolishin when they hosted the first place Brandon Wheat Kings.

And what a debut it was.

Helewka’s line combined for a total of 13 points on the evening as his new team surged to a 10-0 victory.

“Those players have amazing skill. I think, already, through just one game we’ve kind of found some chemistry together and hopefully we’re going to have a great season ahead of us,” said Helewka, who himself had a goal and three assists and earned a second star selection.

Taden also performed well. Although he didn’t have the high offensive output the other two did, he did have a couple of shots and at least one good scoring chance as well as a few good hits.

“Obviously when you get a line like that that can play at that level it’s huge for you. But, again, we’ll see how it goes once we get everybody back and healthy and get guys back from World Juniors,” Sutter said of the DeBruskHelewka-Nikolishin line.

Finally, last Sunday morning the Rebels sent Presten Kopeck and Ryan Pouliot, along with a prospect and two draft picks, to the Kootenay Ice in exchange for team captain Luke Philp.

be more moves to make for the Rebels, who currently sit just two points out of first place in the Central Division.

With all of the leadership now in the dressing room (with the exception of Taden, all of the Rebels’ new acquisitions wore letters for their respective teams) the team has no shortage of choices as to who will replace Johnson as captain. Despite that, though, Sutter said the team will take its time.

“We’re not going to rush into that. We’re just going to let it unfold and see where the team goes and see how things fall in place here over time,” he said, adding there is a possibility the team won’t name a captain at all.

“We don’t really need to name a captain either. Sometimes that’s overrated, too. There’s been teams that have gone whole seasons without someone wearing a ‘C’, so that’s not something we have to do right away.” zcormier@reddeerexpress.com

Philp, a 20-year-old, was named captain of the Ice earlier this year and will bring another offensive boost to the team, as well as a little bit more leadership.

“I was extremely excited to hear I was coming to Red Deer,” said Philp after arriving in Red Deer on Monday.

The 5’10”, 174 lb. centreman has racked up 29 points for the Ice in 22 games this season. He has been sidelined since early November with an ankle injury, and while there is no official timeline for his return to the ice, he said he’s working towards getting back quickly.

“There’s no specific date right now, but I’m just taking it every day, trying to get better every day, trying to get more range of motion every day and stuff like that, so no specific date yet,” he said.

Red Deer Skating Club members excited for 2016

With 2015 in the rear view mirror and 2016 ahead, skaters of all levels have been preparing for a number of events in the coming year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just finished preparing for a very exciting event for our club. We had a club carnival, which is an ice show where the kids get to do numbers and dress up in costumes,â&#x20AC;? said Patti Somer, who is the club administrator as well as a coach.

The carnival allowed skaters from the CANSkate program all the way up to the

competitive figure skating program to dress up and perform routines in a more relaxed setting than they are used to.

According to Somer, most of the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s members are registered in the CANSkate program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The majority of our numbers are children in the learn to skate program, we call it CANSkate, and they range in age from three usually up to about 12.

We also have a program called Pre-Star Skate, which is a transition program from CANSkate into figure skating,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Currently, she said, there are about 35 to 40 kids in the Pre STARSkate program and 40 in the competitive stream. All of the Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CANSkate classes are full, but par-

For those in the competitive program, the New Year will be a very busy time.

Their focus earlier in the season was on preparing for Sectionals, or Provinciallevel competitions, which took place in November. From there, if they qualify, they head off to Canadians and then Worlds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have some children that went to

Provincials but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as far as they made it this year, so thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what the competitive kids are looking forward to is Canadians and then Worlds,â&#x20AC;? Somer said.

Now the focus shifts towards preparing for the Alberta Winter Games in February. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think they focus on consistent and specific training so that they can hone their skills. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fine-tuned sport. The movements have to be so precise to jump off of such a narrow little blade and twirl around in the air two times and come down backwards on one foot. The alignment and the precision of movement, and then it has to have the artistry aspect too. So you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just have to get the job done, it has to look good.â&#x20AC;?

The competitive skaters will have a number of opportunities to compete and polish up before the Winter Games on Feb. 13th-16th in Medicine Hat, including Red Deer Skating Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own Fun On Ice meet, which runs Jan. 29th and 30th at the Kinsmen Arenas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more for Central Alberta. Endless options to explore for new home designs Having been in school and working in real estate the past several months I felt like I was lagging behind on new styles and colours for interior finishes so I took myself on a little field trip to a new flooring store which has just opened in our City’s north end. United Floors is a business run by female entrepreneurs so I knew I had to check it out to see what a feminine twist on a previously male-dominated business looks like.

To my pleasant surprise, the world of home design hasn’t moved that fast so I didn’t feel quite as left behind as I thought I was!

Some of the old favorites and familiar brand names were there, some with familiar patterns and colours and some new surprises. I saw several examples of hardwood which had a definite blue grey hue and some wild new laminate and vinyl plank patterns which even fooled me as to their orientation. Maybe I have

As always, the tile drew me in with a seductive twinkle and I spent some time looking at the gorgeous glossy shapes.

Tile is no longer square, wall tile is especially curvy with baroque inspired patterns, rounded edges and delightful shapes.

Glass is still very prominent yet there were many different treatments than I had seen before. Sparkle, gloss, metallic and mirrored finishes were all beckoning me and tempting me to create yet another backsplash design for my kitchen. It was all so enticing.

which wasn’t a big surprise as the evolution of broadloom has always been very slow.

The plush fibre is softer yet stronger than ever which feels very decadent underfoot but as you would expect the colour and look of most carpets are still neutral and safe.

There are a few bold patterns for the very brave and experimental (a boldly patterned stair carpet is a wonderful solution when the main floor is all hardwood).

I saw some stunning area carpets which really gave me some inspiration for a new look in my living room; maybe someday as I still am very fond of my abstract wool carpet I bought a few years ago.

I have had the current interior look for almost two years so I should hang on for awhile before I revamp the nearly new décor!

What did 2015 mean to the mortgage world?

Happy New Year! It’s always a little bit hard to believe just how fast the old year actually passes but here we are again and before we move forward it is probably a great idea to take a quick look at 2015 to see how it will impact the year ahead. 2015 was the year of change.

The first impact to the mortgage world has been the severe decrease in the price of oil. It is no secret that here in Alberta the economy is very reliant on the oil and gas sector.

The price decrease has had a huge impact on the income of many. This translates to lenders increasing their due diligence on all applications from anyone in these

of increased overall savings and little to no balances on credit facilities.

If you work in these fields then you should prepare yourselves for a higher level of scrutiny.

The second change with implications still not fully known was the complete change to the provincial and federal governments.

During these early days it is hard to say what exactly the impact will be but given some of the current proposals on the table it is likely.

Already we have seen proposals such as a carbon tax, royalty review, and an increase to corporate taxation. Seems like we will have to wait and see how things unfold.

The third and final change was recently announced and was made by the federal government in regards to the minimum down payment on homes over $500,000.

You may be wondering

why the government is involved in such things and there is a really easy answer to that. All mortgages with less than 20% down have to be insured through CMHC, Genworth or CG. Through these agencies the federal government guarantees these mortgages in case of borrower default. That means they are now financially invested in the housing market.

The down payment change means that anyone purchasing must have 5% to put down on the first $500,000 and 10% on any amount over that.

For example, a home worth $650,000 previously could be purchased with $32,500 down but under the new guidelines they must have $25,000 for the first portion and an additional $15,000 for the balance or $40,000.

The rational is that anyone purchasing a home of this value should be able to put a bit more down

which helps mitigate the overall risk.

And so what does this all mean?

Despite the doom and gloom reported daily in the media it is important to remember the sky is not falling.

We have weathered this type of an economic downturn in Alberta before and come through just fine.

Rates are still historically low making it an ideal time for first time home buyers and investors looking to expand their rental portfolios. Homes which are priced well are still selling albeit more slowly.

Builders proceeded much more cautiously after 2009 which means they are not carrying a huge inventory of homes.

We are Albertans folks, we are tough, and we will get through this as well.

Myrna Pearman pens book in support of the Ellis Bird Farm

BY SARAH MAETCHE RED DEER EXPRESS Alberta experiences four seasons, despite strong evidence that says we only have two - winter and construction season. One may think attracting and watching birds may be best suited for the warmer months, but with Myrna Pearman’s book Backyard Bird Feeding: An Alberta Guide, we learn that it is possible to attract and enjoy backyard birds all throughout each season.

Author Pearman is the long time site services man-

ager and biologist at Ellis Bird Farm (EBF), located southeast of Lacombe. She said the book is an exciting new resource for bird enthusiasts across the province, designed for novices to veterans. ”Basically it’s an expanded and revised version of the very first book that I wrote,” she said. “The first edition was printed in1989 and then the second edition was in 1991.”

Due to the popularity of the first backyard bird feeding book, Pearman was asked to craft a new expand-

ed version this past year.

“It was time to upgrade,” she said. “What this book is about is what you should feed, the history of bird feeding and the emphasis of naturescaping. That’s what EBF demonstrates - butterfly gardens and hummingbird gardens. This gives information about what you should feed, how to put it out, the different types of feed, how to feed in the summer and what to do with challenges like what happens when the ravens, crows, magpies or raccoons show up.”

The writing process was

going along well until Pearman realized they were short of some photos to include in the book.

A call out was then made, first on facebook, followed by an agriculture newspaper, for photo submissions from across the prairies.

“That generated around 800 submissions,” noted Pearman.

Pearman then put working on the book on hold last summer, due to the opening of the bird farm for the season. She was then approached by a new corporate sponsor, who

offered to help fund the printing of the book. By last July, the rush was on to have the book ready for this past November for the holiday season.

“So I basically went into hibernation for four months and here it is,” said Pearman.

“It’s been a full year. From the middle of July to the middle of October, it consumed my life. It’s just such a big project.”

A true labour of love, the new book features over 60 photographers and illustrations by Alberta artist Gary Ross. The last portion of the book details the actual types of birds you can attract into your backyard like hummingbirds and orioles.

“It was kind of a community effort and all the proceeds support the education, research and conservation efforts of the bird farm,” said Pearman of the book.

Pearman added that EBF plans to emphasize the educational use of the funds, leaning more towards supporting the educational programs offered at the farm.

Throughout the three decades, Pearman has penned several nature-related books. As the site manager of EBF, she has overseen the centre’s development into the very popular and respected education and research centre it is today.

Although it’s closed for the winter season, the EBF was a hub of activity this past year.

This past May the farm opened again to visitors, welcoming them into the brand new visitor centre.

The bright red building was constructed last year. It was used for gathering and teaching over the following months, but last May was the first time it opened officially to the public.

The new centre boasts large windows, many dis-

plays that have incorporated local refurbished wood and a gift shop. The older building that previously housed the visitor centre is still in use but will be treated as a self-guided facility and for workshops.

Now that the visitors’ centre is finally a reality, EBF organizers plan to enjoy the new facility that has opened up the doors up for more education and research opportunities.

“We have a few more plans for tweaking areas around the site,” said Pearman. “But this (the visitors’ centre) was a big effort, so we are just going to go a little easier for a couple of years.”

This year, the bird farm will be welcoming a new tenant to to the surrounding land around the farm, which is a big change for the organization.

The farmer will no longer be growing canola and will be switching over to more sustainable agriculture practices. The surrounding fields will be switched over to pasture and forage for cattle, which will help improve the biodiversity of the farm and surrounding area.

Another change on the way to EBF is the change over of the tea house operator. EBF is currently seeking a new operator.

“It’s a really unique opportunity,” said Pearman. “It’s a very successful operation.

We just need a new operator that fits with our ethos and who we are.”
