Dawson City placer mining proposal withdrawn Maura Forrest News Reporter

A

recent application for a 10year permit to mine placer claims on the east side of the Dome Road in Dawson City has been discontinued - for now.

The decision stems from a disagreement between the two co-owners of the majority of the claims included in the application - Darrell Carey and Rod Adams.

Adams said he didn’t know Carey had submitted a proposal to mine the claims until he saw it in the news earlier this month.

He then informed the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board that he didn’t support the application, which brought the process to a halt.

Carey’s proposal came up in the legislative assembly this month, when NDP mining critic Jim Tredger raised concerns that Dawson residents would soon have “a new mine operating in their backyard.”

Of the 31 claims included in the proposal, six belong to Carey alone. Carey and Adams jointly own the remaining 25. Their company is called 47162 Yukon Inc. But the original YESAB proposal lists Carey as the sole proponent for all 31 claims.

“I wasn’t even considered and I wasn’t part of the ownership,” Adams said. “It’s a 50/50 property and I wasn’t agreeable with his application.”

YESAB’s Dawson manager, Shelby Jordan, wrote an email to Carey’s agent on Tuesday explaining why the application was being discontinued.

“While I recognize that Mr. Carey is a director of 47162 Yukon Inc. so is Mr. Adams and as it stands right now the corporation... is not the listed proponent for the submission we have before us,” she wrote. “Obviously there are some matters that need to be taken care of between Mr. Carey and Mr. Adams with respect to the corporation and those registered claims. Until that happens, there isn’t much we can do on this front with respect to those claims.”

Adams said he and Carey did some work together on those claims in 2013. But he said they haven’t spoken since then.

He wouldn’t give any details

about the nature of their disagreement. “We couldn’t get along,” was all he said.

Adams said he and Carey are now planning to break up the company. He said they’re scheduled to appear before Yukon Supreme Court in February 2016 to figure out who will retain ownership of the 25 claims.

He said he doesn’t know why Carey decided to submit an application now, before their dispute has been settled.

Carey declined to comment for this story.

Still, this hiccup doesn’t mean the claims won’t be mined.

Adams said he plans to submit his own application if he gets

to keep the claims. He didn’t give any details about what his proposal would look like, saying only that “there’s a lot of difference between his (Carey’s) application and my application.”

Sebastian Jones, a board member of the Klondike Active Transport and Trails Society, said he’s “relieved” the application has been discontinued. He said Carey’s proposal would have destroyed a number of crosscountry ski trails on the east side of the Dome Road. But he knows the proposal isn’t necessarily gone for good.

New regulations to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning Maura Forrest News Reporter

ll Yukon residences with a fuel-burning device or an attached garage now require carbon monoxide alarms, thanks to new regulations that came into effect this month.

Oil-fired appliances and fuel oil storage tanks must also now be installed and modified by certified oil-burner mechanics.

These regulations have been a long time coming. The OilFired Appliance Safety Statutory Amendment Act, which set out the new rules, was unanimously passed in May 2013. The new legislation came after three adults and two children died of carbon monoxide poisoning in a Porter Creek home in January 2012.

But the changes were not legally binding until the regulations came into effect this month.

Dennis Berry, assistant deputy minister of protective services, said the time lag is “in some ways... positive,” because it gave people working in the industry the chance to get certified as oilburner mechanics.

“If we had brought the regulations in the day after the act was passed... people would have had trouble meeting them.”

Yukon College launched its oil burner mechanic program in the summer of 2013 to boost the number of certified mechanics in the territory. The college provides in-school courses and apprenticeship training for students. Tradespeople with at least 8,100 hours of experience as oil burner mechanics can take an interprovincial exam to be certified directly.

Berry said there were 13 apprentices in the territory as of November, and there are probably at least 13 certified mechanics currently working.

The government is also pre-

paring a registry of oil burner mechanics.

Certified mechanics are now required to install and modify oil-fired appliances and fuel tanks. But certification isn’t required for servicing and maintenance. When the act was passed in 2013, the government said that was because it would take time to make sure there was a certified mechanic in every community who could do the maintenance.

Under the new regulations, homeowners must also ensure that fire and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and working.

Berry said fire alarms have been required in new homes in Canada since the 1980s, and carbon monoxide detectors have been required in new homes since 2005 under the National Building Code.

But the new regulations are retroactive.

“If you owned a house that was built in the ‘60s and you’re

not required to have those things, you are required to have them now,” Berry explained.

Though the rules have only just taken effect, Berry said the government has been working to educate people about carbon monoxide for the last three years, partly through its Seriously Simple campaign.

“We’ve given out thousands of detectors across the Yukon,” he said. “We have attempted to get CO detectors and smoke alarms in the hands of every Yukoner.”

Berry said Yukon and Ontario are the only jurisdictions in Canada that now require a carbon monoxide detector in every home with a fuel-burning device or an attached garage.

“We’re leading Canada,” he said. “It’s a good example of a well-designed policy going forward to practice.”

YESAB spokesperson Rob Yeomans said now that the application has been discontinued, Carey can’t simply pick up where he left off. If he does retain ownership of the claims, he will have to submit a new project proposal and start the YESAB process over again.

Carey’s Slinky mine on the west side of the Dome Road has been the subject of controversy for the last several years, in part because his claims are located where the Yukon government wants to build a new subdivision.

A deal was reached in 2014 that saw the Yukon government agree to reroute the Dome Road around Carey’s claims to give him easier access. In exchange, Carey agreed to finish mining the area by the end of 2017 and to surrender some or all of his claims after that.

In the legislative assembly earlier this month, Tredger asked why the claims on the east side of the road were not included in the 2014 agreement. The government didn’t answer the question directly.

According to Carey’s latest YESAB application, the claims on the east side of the Dome Road are further from existing residences than the Slinky mine is. However, it did note that some residences overlap the northernmost claims, and promised that “a 100-metre buffer will remain undisturbed in this area.”

It became slightly more expensive to purchase a condo or a duplex in July, August and September.

The average price of a duplex increased to $310,600, up from $302,600 in the previous quarter.

But that didn’t affect duplex sales, which were up for the third straight quarter totaling $4.7 million.

The average condo price was $318,100, an increase of $4,600 over the previous quarter. More condos were sold in the third quarter (50) than in the second (45).

A total of 205 real estate transactions were made in Whitehorse during the third quarter, representing an increase of 68 transactions over the same period of time last year.

On Dec. 27, Whitehorse RCMP responded to a 911 call about a 38-year-old male assaulting people at a residence along the North Klondike Highway.

According to police, the man used physical force, as well as a canoe paddle, to confine the homeowners to the residence.

The caller was able to escape and call the police. A man was arrested and taken into custody, where he was charged with eight offences under the criminal code including assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement and mischief.

o escape the hard-line communist regime, many Vietnamese people left their home country in pursuit for freedom from 19751995. I left Vietnam in the summer of 1979 by boat. I was supposed to leave with my dad, but the plan did not go well, so I went by myself.

I was 12 at that time. There were no familiar faces in this boat, and I did not know that I would never see my dad again after that day.

About 36 people were hidden in the bottom of a small wooden boat without much air circulation, no food and limited water. After three days at the sea, everyone was starving, sea sick and exhausted. The boat was not designed to be used in the sea, so it started to leak. We all thought we would die that night. Luckily, around 5 p.m., a small fishing boat found us and helped transport us to the shore. Our boat sank soon after that.

I arrived in Thailand and stayed at Songkhla United Nations refugee camp. I was young and did not think too much. But I could feel the worries from adults around me. They did not know what country would accept them, when they could start a new life, what their future looked like or when could they see their family members again. At that time, the hope to see family members who were still in Vietnam was very dim.

After nine months staying at the refugee camp, the Canadian government accepted my application. Everyone at the refugee camp congratulated me and told me that Canada was a great country. I was transferred to another camp in Bangkok for one month before flying to Canada.

I clearly remember the night I stepped onto a 747 aircraft. I had never been in an airplane before so it was quite an experience. I was so happy and so excited to go to the second largest country

I arrived in Edmonton in May 1980 and stayed at a military camp. The thing I remember the most is how cold the air was. I could see my breath! The volunteers gave me warm clothing and food. I felt very blessed by the new country. I eventually settled in with a relativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, who came to Canada a few years before me. The relativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family was able to take care of me without government assistance.

At that time, many more refugees came to Edmonton every week. I remember that year, the relativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family hosted a welcome party almost every week to welcome newcomers. At the party, people shared their stories, asked questions, and got help with many issues to help them to settle in. Many of these â&#x20AC;&#x153;newcomersâ&#x20AC;? now became good friends to the relativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family.

In 1991, I graduated from University of Alberta with an engineering degree. Then I moved to

It appeared in the News earlier this December and laid out, in such a personal and powerful way, how the current plight of Syrian refugees resonates with the shared experiences and past struggles of Japanese and other Canadian immigrants and their families.

We pride ourselves in our cultural diversity, on the mosaic of ethnic traditions and values that invigorate our communities. We can certainly look to some fine moments in our history when we undertook to meet the needs of refugees and immigrants without hesitation, drawing them into the fabric of Canadian life with caring and generosity.

As Lillian pointed out, we rose to the occasion in the case of

But we shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget the darker side of our history when we allowed fear and ethnic and political bias to hold sway over our higher natures.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the sad story of residential schools and government directed mistreatment of Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s First Peoples. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the injustice visited on Japanese Canadians during the war which Lillianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family lived first hand. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the general refusal to accept Jewish refugees during the 12 years of Nazi rule, including rejection of the St. Louis, a ship with almost 1000 Jewish asylum seekers, sent back to Europe to die in the holocaust.

So, despite the pride we take in our multicultural society, we need to remember that the displaced and persecuted have not always received a warm welcome here.

But all hard work was paid off. With some money saved up, I went back to Vietnam to visit my mother and my sister for the first time after 13 years apart. But it was too sad that my dad could not wait for me and had passed away a few days before.

On this trip I also met my future wife. I sponsored my wife to Canada, and with hard work, we were able to put down some money to purchase our first house in Whitehorse.

Our first son was born in 1996. I was so happy.

I have fulfilled my dream. I now have a homesweet-home, a stable job and a happy family.

This was a time when press reports portrayed would-be Indian refugees as Sikh extremists posing a threat to Canadian sovereignty. It was not our finest hour.

There are those who foment the same kind of fear and intolerance when it comes to the Syrian refugees, but happily, the vast majority of Canadians are again rising to meet an almost unprecedented humanitarian crisis with open hearts and a willingness to support refugees in whatever ways we can.

And this is certainly true of the people Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gotten to know through Yukon Cares.

This group was formed just prior to the federal election in response to the Syrian refugee crisis and concern over the lack of positive action on the part of Canada. Spearheaded by Rachel De Queiroz, it was soon apparent that there was huge support in the

community to sponsor and assist Syrian refugees.

Over 100 people attended the initial meeting, and since that time dozens of volunteers have been involved with the planning and preparations to facilitate the settlement of a refugee family in our community.

As Lillian pointed out, when we come together to help refugee and immigrant groups to build a new life among us, we build social cohesion and help create a climate of giving and compassion that benefits us all.

With the first Syrian family soon to arrive, we have a marvellous opportunity to demonstrate our better selves, to dispel the myths that get in the way of our Canadian generosity of spirit, and to do our part to create a welcoming, supportive community. May we all rise to the occasion.

Time will tell how the federal government will respond. After sweeping the north in October’s federal election it will be loath to start things off on the wrong foot.

But the next election is a long way off and Ottawa is facing hard financial times of its own. Falling oil prices have caused serious damage to the Canadian economy and by extension government revenue. And there are indications that the bleeding has not yet been stopped - particularly in Alberta where nearly as many jobs have been lost in this past year as were lost during the great recession of 2008-2009.

The feds now have an opportunity to gauge the political fallout from this trial balloon. If the backlash isn’t too severe they may find it convenient to blame Statistics Canada while finding some much needed savings in these hard fiscal times.

It would be hard to judge the feds too harshly if they did decide to hold the line. It has been a good run of steadily increasing transfers but I believe in spreading out the pain of hard economic times and it is a defensible position to say that

the north should shoulder some of the burden as Ottawa and the provinces are seeing revenues growth lagging or, in some cases, declining.

Unfortunately all of this puts the Yukon Party in a difficult position that it has not faced in its 13 years in power. For once it may have to actually make some hard choices about where money is spent.

There is no question that $23 million is a significant amount of scratch for the territorial treasury and money that could help boost the local economy at a time when private sector activity is lagging.

But let us keep things in perspective. It is not fatal in the context of $930 million in total transfers and it is not a “cut” per se. As stated at the outset we are actually not even seeing a decrease in the amount of transfers that we receive but rather a slowing in their growth. The government can weather this change by holding the line on spending and without making deep cuts.

The pain will be mitigated somewhat by the fact that costs are not increasing like they used to and falling oil prices have and will continue to have benefits for the territory—which has no meaningful oil and gas industry

We already have a thriving film culture in the Yukon with multiple filmmakers along with the Yukon Film Society and several film festivals; we could use these profits to help our filmmakers and film festivals to expand and grow even more.

No matter who you are, we all like going to the movies. I do realize it is a big dream to build a cinema like this in Whitehorse, but this has already been accomplished in much smaller towns than Whitehorse. Why can’t we at least do the same thing here?

However, the panel at the Beringia Centre, with representation from the three First Nations and our two environmental organizations involved with the case, clearly explained that this flawed Yukon Court of Appeal decision can be precedent setting for future land use planning.

The Umbrella Final Agreement has been too hard won to be so blatantly flouted. No government should be rewarded for such an injudicious challenge.

So yes, an appeal to our highest court is clearly necessary. But we do have an upcoming election, and the focus of our efforts for a change in government has never been more paramount.

There is not enough room here to relate what I think of a government that couldn’t care less of its mandate as elected representatives of the people.

I remind everyone: the Yukon Party, while campaigning last election, lacked the integrity to reveal its true intent for the Peel, precisely because the party knew it went against the wishes of a vast majority of Yukoners. Only when elected to the protection of a false majority did its deception come to light.

Public consultation to this government is merely an inconvenient formality. The almost unanimous opposition to frack-

I think there is a good chance that it will as Ottawa faces a cash crunch of its own. Unfortunately it could not come at a worse time for a territory where the bad economic news doesn’t seem to end. With the adoption of our own system of proportional representation, never again would we be subject to a government that is willing to run away with an agenda that is in such contrast to the will of the people.

Our antiquated electoral system, and all those that subscribe to it, can have a nice home right up there in the Beringia Centre, in amongst all the other fine old dinosaurs therein.

Snow fences and permafrost don’t mix

I

t probably seemed like a good idea at the time.

In the early 1980s, highway maintenance people in the Northwest Territories put up a stretch of snow fence along a drift-prone bit of the Dempster Highway on the Peel Plateau near Fort MacPherson. And then, it appears, they pretty much forgot it.

The metre-high fence stood there for three decades, snow building up around it in winter and melting away each spring.

Its wooden slats dried and weathered until some of them broke, the wire holding them together sagged, and one stretch of fence collapsed completely.

That was the state of the fence in 2012, when Carleton University doctoral student Brendan O’Neill first saw it.

O’Neill is researching the impacts of climate change on permafrost. He chose the area of the old snow fence as a study site in order to see how surface disturbance, such as the fence,

affects the underlying permafrost. He reported his findings at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the ArcticNet research network in Vancouver in early December.

The study area is in the continuous permafrost zone, O’Neill says. In fact, deep under the more recent permafrost, there’s a thick layer of massive glacial ice that has been buried and frozen since the last ice age.

But the permafrost near the ground surface and under the old snow fence is what interests him. It’s melting, and it’s changing the landscape as it melts.

Every year since 2012, O’Neill and his colleagues have measured snow depth, ground temperature and permafrost depth near the old snow fence and at a control site at a distance from the fence. In addition, they have monitored conditions along a 40-metre transect, a line running across the snow fence at right angles.

The good news is that the snow fence works. It definitely traps the drifting snow. O’Neill recorded snow depth every two metres along the transect in March of each year. The snow cover varied from year to year,

he says, but it was always deeper and accumulated earlier near the fence. At the ends of the transect, snow depth varied between 30 and 80 centimetres. At the fence, the snow piled as high as 1.2 metres, and it was usually at least a metre deep.

Every August, O’Neill returned to the site to measure how much of the ground had thawed over the summer. At the control site, the depth of the thaw was about 50 centimetres, but near and under the fence,

Based on a computer model that incorporates his observations, O’Neill suspects that the thaw zone is at least three metres deep below the fence, or roughly six times the depth of thaw in the undisturbed zone.

The changes caused by the snow fence aren’t just below ground. The fence was erected on a fairly flat stretch of peatland beside the Dempster Highway, which is built up above the surrounding terrain. And the subsidence is spreading. “We’re beginning to see some signs of subsidence on the side of the road along the fence,” O’Neill says. The fence that was erected to solve one highway problem, drifting, is now creating a new and possibly more expensive problem.

One lesson from O’Neill’s work is that the permafrost under the Peel Plateau is fragile and it doesn’t take much surface disturbance to trigger substantial changes. Another, O’Neill says, is that drainage is important, even if the site seems dry and frozen.

“If you have to build a snow fence, try to avoid building it in flat terrain,” he says. “Try to focus on a site with a slight slope or convex topography where you probably won’t have as big a problem.”

Trudeau faces looming â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;stranded assetsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; debate in confronting climate policy Bruce Cheadle Canadian Press

OTTAWA hen star NDP candidate Linda McQuaig mused during the opening days of the federal election campaign that some of Albertaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oil wealth would have to â&#x20AC;&#x153;stay in the groundâ&#x20AC;? in order to meet Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s climate change targets, the remark was treated as a scandalous revelation by her political opponents.

Yet McQuaig, known for her sometimes polarizing and provocative views, arguably was simply stating 2015â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s middle-of-the-road orthodoxy.

From the governor of the Bank of England, to the U.S. president and the investment arms of the planetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest banks, 2015 was the year that â&#x20AC;&#x153;stranded assetsâ&#x20AC;? stopped being some mythical bedtime story told by tree huggers to spook oil workers and landed in the mainstream.

Mark Carney, the Canadian head of the Bank of England, attracted international attention with a Sept.

29 speech at venerable Lloydâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of London cautioning against the grave risks to the financial system posed by a changing climate.

Carney cited estimates by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that only between a fifth and a third of proven oil reserves can be burned if humanity is to avoid catastrophic climate impacts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If that estimate is even approximately correct it would render the vast majority of reserves â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;strandedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201C; oil, gas and coal that will be literally unburnable without expensive carbon capture technology, which itself alters fossil fuel economics,â&#x20AC;? said the central bank governor.

President Barack Obama, making the case for his rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline barely a month later, made much the same point. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ultimately, if weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to prevent large parts of this Earth from becoming not only inhospitable but uninhabitable in our lifetimes, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to have to keep some fossil fuels in the ground rather than burn them and release more dangerous pollution into the sky,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Investment houses are also issuing cautions.

Last April, HSBC Global Research reported that: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fossil fuel companies, or some of their assets, may become non-viable or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;unburnable,â&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; under conditions of increased climate regulation and depressed prices.

And following this monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s UN COP21 climate agreement in Paris, Citigroup Research Equities Australia was warning investors that, â&#x20AC;&#x153;whatever the fine print, high emissions industries will face substan-

It remains, however, a highly sensitive subject for Canadians who spent the past decade being told the country was on the path to becoming a global energy super power.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a year-end interview with The Canadian Press, sounded the requisite progressive notes when asked about the impact of the Paris climate agreement on Canada’s resource sector.

“We know, and with Paris it’s very clear, where the world is going,” said Trudeau, whose Liberals won power in October promising to make Canada a responsible player on the international climate front after 10 years of Conservative ambivalence.

“We’re going towards a zero carbon economy. The question is, does Canada want to drag its feet on it or do we want to be part of it?”

But Trudeau also maintains new oil pipelines to spur oil sands development are compatible with this low-carbon future. He argues the transition requires investment and innovation, which is dependent on a robust economy.

It sounds a bit like having your cake and eating it too; not so different from the Conservative government’s mantra of balancing the environment and the economy.

Trudeau pushed back hard at the analogy.

“You square that by making sure that Albertans, who have been innovative in the energy sector for decades, are part of that disruption, are part of moving beyond the fossil fuel resources we have,” he said.

“Leverage the fossil fuel resources we have now – and are needed now – into solutions for tomorrow.”

For Canadian policy makers, that’s a very tricky needle to thread.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper agreed last April to a G7 goal to decarbonize the economy

by the end of the century, a timeline long enough to delay hard choices in the short term.

But under the new Liberal government, Canada was among those at COP21 who helped push for a goal of limiting global warming to around 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, an ambitious target that demands swift policy action.

Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose says Canada needs policies to deal with the fall-out of stranded assets.

“All you have to do is talk to CEOs of major corporations and they’ll tell you, billions and billions of dollars have left Alberta and will never come back,” Ambrose said in an interview.

“So if the Liberal government is talking about going even farther than the targets that we had already proposed to go to Paris with as a Conservative government, they need to look very closely at what the implementation of that looks like.”

Dave Sawyer, an economist with EnviroEconomics, says there are two tracks for ongoing oil sands production even in a low-carbon economy.

Companies with large investments already sunk in production will continue to make money off oil, but they’ll be less profitable.

“It’s like a sunsetting sector in the economy where you just don’t invest capital in the operation,” he said.

Future increases in production, meanwhile, must be driven by technology that reduces costs and carbon emissions.

“The longer term question is: Is there room for oil in a significantly de-carbonized world? There are a bunch of end uses we’re looking at now – even with transformative technologies – that you can’t really do much with,” said Sawyer, pointing to long haul trucking and jet

travel as examples.

David McLaughlin, the former head of the defunct National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, said the concept of stranded oil resources is now an accepted part of the climate debate – a development that poses profound policy implications for an energy dependent economy like Canada’s.

McLaughlin posited that this fall’s Alberta NDP climate plan, which includes a hard cap on oilsands emissions by about 2030, serves as “validation” of the stranded asset argument and thus has significance far beyond the specific greenhouse gas levels it legislates.

“This is the new normal, we’re into it,” he said in an interview.

“So Canada’s economy, being based on an energy bet, becomes really risky. Canada’s economy, based on an environment bet tomorrow, is even riskier.”

Managing the transition will be the policy challenge of a generation, he said.

The International Energy Agency released a report on the global energy investment outlook in June 2014 that clearly laid out the looming stranded asset debate and the perilous path ahead for fossil fuel investors and public policy makers.

The report’s summary of conflicting public sentiments is cautionary reading for Canadian governments: “a demand for stronger action on climate change but a backlash against the cost of subsidies; opposition to fracking; protests against nuclear and coalfired plants; suspicion about CCS (carbon capture and storage).

“Against this backdrop, the risk of policy incoherence and even policy reversals is high.”

Soccer elites show their stuff at Christmas showcase

ust before jolly ol’ Saint Nick made his rounds, many of Yukon’s top soccer players delivered their own gift to Whitehorse soccer fans.

Yukon Selects and Total Soccer Excellence Academy players, including former Team Yukon members and post-secondary players, gave the gift of highoctane play in the Yukon Selects Annual Christmas Soccer Showcase on Dec. 23 at the Canada Games Centre.

Fans were treated to three close matches – two of which ended in ties.

The one that didn’t end in a draw was between the Women’s

Selects and the Total Soccer Excellence Academy Girls All-Stars, with the latter taking a 2-1 win.

The Academy’s goals came from Megan Lanigan, who plays for the University of Victoria, and Camille Galloway, who plays for the University of British Columbia-Okanagan.

Jaylene Kelly scored for the Selects in the second half. All three played for Team Yukon at 2013 Canada Summer Games in Quebec.

Returning home to play with old teammates was a real nostalgic treat, said Selects goalkeeper Sam Burgis, who also plays for UBC Okanagan.

“This is where I started playing soccer and where I first started loving the game,” said Burgis.

“It’s nice to be reminded of the

first time I played and how much fun it was. It was nice having the home crowd and everything.”

After a 5-0 blowout for the Men’s Yukon Selects at last year’s showcase, the TSE Academy AllStars kept it close this time with a 1-1 tie in the men’s match.

Academy’s Kurtis Hills, who plays for Grant MacEwan University, scored early in the second half on a free kick. Selects’ Dominic Korn, another UBC Okanagan player, found the top corner to even it up with five minutes left.

“It’s fun to play with my friends that I played with for a long time,” said Academy’s Callum Wood-Ryan. “It was a good competitive game - last year we didn’t do too good. It was a big improvement.”

Between the two adult match-

es, the Junior Striker Selects boys 2001-2003 team split in two for an inter-squad match, ending in a 2-2 tie.

Goals came from Rhys Faragher, Jake Charlton, Ben Kishchuk and Joe Hanson, who currently plays with U.S. Youth Soccer’s Crossfire Premier club.

The Junior Striker Selects recently became the first team to represent the territory in a futsal tournament outside of Yukon.

Split into a 2003 squad and a 2002 squad, the former went undefeated in four matches and the latter finished with a 1-3 record at the Vancouver tournament the weekend of Dec. 16-17.

The Selects also became the first team to play futsal – a form of soccer typically played on a small indoor field without walls

or boards – at the Canada Games Centre’s fieldhouse during the showcase.

The following men’s match was also futsal.

“I like it better than indoor soccer because it’s more controlled, it’s a better tempo,” said Wood-Ryan, who is playing his second year at the Real Salt Lake club’s developmental academy in Arizona. “It’s more strategic.

You can’t hit it off the walls when you get in trouble, you have to use your feet. But it doesn’t quite compare to the outdoor game.

That’s my favourite for sure.”

Cross Country Yukon hopes to pave ski trail for off-season training

any of Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top crosscountry skiers already come from Whitehorse, but Cross Country Yukon wants to improve the quality of off-season training so more can reach their potential.

The sportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s governing body has taken a step towards achieving a decade-long goal of paving a trail for non-winter training through the creation of a sports trust fund to which individuals, businesses, and groups can donate, Cross Country Yukon (CCY) announced last week.

The goal of the Paved Path Project is to pave a five-kilometre loop of trail at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club at Mount McIntyre over the next two years.

The three-metre wide trail could be used by roller skiers as well as cyclists, joggers and more â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with the exception of motorized vehicles â&#x20AC;&#x201C; said CCY head coach Alain Masson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The paved path would be for everyone to use. It would be very similar to the Millennium Trail along the Yukon River with the additional benefit of being tied into the Canada Games Centre,â&#x20AC;? said Masson in a news release. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We think it is a great project that will benefit everyone, from the general population to the elite athletes, and will greatly enhance the quality of life for all Yukoners.â&#x20AC;?

The five-kilometre loop will largely use existing trail, including a section that runs past the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chalet and through the â&#x20AC;&#x153;stadiumâ&#x20AC;? right next to the Canada Games Centre sports facility.

The projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s construction cost is estimated to run between $900,000 and $1.1 million. CCY plans to apply for government funding to help cover the cost. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m optimistic,â&#x20AC;? said project spokesperson Kathleen Wood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you look at where would be a logical place for another Millennium-type trail where everyone can use it, where do you think it should go? It makes so much sense on different levels. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The city says they get about 300,000 people using the Millennium Trail every year. And there are about 2,000 people per day who go to the Canada Games Centre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So you can start to understand the potential for developing â&#x20AC;Ś a more urban trail at the recreational hub of the city, at the Canada Games Centre, and it makes a lot of sense.â&#x20AC;?

The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club will host the Haywood Ski Nationals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crosscountry ski championships â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this March. The event will inject as much as a million dollars into the local economy, said CCY. Three Whitehorse skiers are currently on Cross Country Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eight-person senior development team, including Sochi Olympian Emily Nishikawa.

Grandpa should be set straight about his nosy questions off undeserved incivilities.

MANNERS DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have been dating a wonderful man for 11 months now, and I will soon be going with him to his hometown to meet his family. One of the family members I will meet is his grandpa.

My boyfriend has informed me that Grandpa has a habit of asking extremely personal questions. Particularly, he tends to ask questions about people’s sexual experiences or lack thereof.

From my boyfriend’s description of the situation, it seems that nobody in the family has ever pointed out to his grandpa that these types of questions are not appropriate. Furthermore, it has been explained to me that changing the subject or otherwise trying to avoid addressing the question will not work because Grandpa will continue to ask.

Generally, I would respond with something along the lines of, “I don’t think that is any of your business.” However, since I do not want to start my relationship with my boyfriend’s grandpa off on a bad note, I would like to refrain from directly stating that I find the question to be rude and inappropriate. On the other hand, I refuse to divulge this kind of personal information.

In warning me, my boyfriend told me that I should feel free to respond however I feel is appropriate. Do you have any suggestions?

GENTLE READER: There seems to be a belief that because you will be visiting your boyfriend’s family — perhaps as a prospective daughter-in-law, perhaps not — that you are the only one being tested. This is incorrect.

Here is a perfect opportunity for your boyfriend to show that while he may be in the habit of tolerating impolite behavior from his relatives toward himself, he will not condone such behavior toward you. Miss Manners suggests you point out to him that you will feel better about making the trip if he will lay the groundwork by having a stern conversation with Grandpa beforehand. If his grandfather persists, you can respond sweetly, “Oh, dear, you know how Evan feels about this.”

You want to develop a strong relationship with his family, and you will not be able to do that if your first act has to be fending

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Could you please tell me how one is to set the table for dinner?

I was taught that the silverware is placed on the left side of the charger plate placed on top of the dinner napkin. My wife says that it should be split up, knife and fork on the left and spoons on the right side of the charger plate. The loser has to cook dinner for a full week.

GENTLE READER: You should both put on your aprons. Piling it all on the napkin is wrong, but so is placing the knife on the left alongside the fork.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: What do you think about dressing innocent babies and children in black outfits?

I just cringe when I see people dressing newborns and small children all in black. I thought that one used to wait until they were at least 18 to dress all in black for special occasions or for funerals.

GENTLE READER: Dressing children as if they were adults is undesirable, whether it be putting small boys in faux black tie or preteen girls in revealing dresses. But black for funerals — or at least dark clothing — does not come under this ban. Miss Manners prefers it to the Victorians’ tendency not only to fail to shield children from funerals, but, in some cases, to feature them.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am going to host Thanksgiving dinner for the first time for my own family and in-laws. My brotherin-law’s daughters’ birthdays are in November, and he wants to have a small birthday moment for the girls at the Thanksgiving dinner.

I don’t feel like mixing Thanksgiving dinner with the birthdays of their kids. What should I do? I don’t want to upset them.

GENTLE READER: Why not?

You’ve already upset Miss Manners.

Evidently, you are not thankful for these little girls.

But beyond that, you are so far ignorant of the spirit of the occasion as to imagine that there is some way to avoid horrifying your in-laws if you act on your indifference to your nieces.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have received a birth announcement from my cousin’s daughter saying they are “looking forward” to our seeing their new twins. However, there is no invitation to any viewing event.

GENTLE READER: Infants, like royalty, do not run about socially, but expect people to come to them to pay obeisance.

You have been encouraged to pay such a call, although Miss

Manners trusts that you will first check that it is at the family’s convenience.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My former in-laws refuse to call my daughter by the name she chooses — her middle name, which is a family historical name on my mother’s side. The family knows her preference, but insists that they will continue to call her by her childhood nickname, which ends in “y” and is a nickname for her first name.

She is in her 30s and using her middle name in the town where she has relocated. All her friends, colleagues and employers use her middle name.

I say, shouldn’t we call a person by the name they choose?

This gets no response except, “Other people can call her whatever, but she will always be (....y).” They sound so firm and united that I am bewildered.

I’m not going to get into an argument with anyone, but this seems rude and domineering to me. Of course my daughter is disappointed in them.

GENTLE READER: While you are correct that it is impolite to address someone by a name they do not use, exceptions are made for family members who remember when, in first grade, your daughter demanded that she henceforth be known as Rapunzel. And for teachers of preschool, where all the girls ask to be called Elsa.

If your daughter cannot allow her grandparents this liberty, likely arising from an affectionate association with her childhood nickname, protesting against it should be left to her.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My boyfriend’s mother paid for her entire family (with spouses and children) to go to a Mexican resort for a week, and she graciously included me (even though she’d never met me).

My boyfriend bought the plane ticket, but she paid for the accommodations and food.

I bought a card to thank her with while I was there, but in the flurry of getting back up to speed when I got home (I was moving), I forgot to send her the thank-you note until the window closed without it being awkwardly late.

Now four months have passed, and it’s on my mind again. How can I repair the damage?

GENTLE READER: Apologize.

And apologize again. Grovel.

This will, Miss Manners notes, be more convincing if you take the time to write an effusive handwritten letter rather than relying on a store-bought card that is stained by whatever has been sitting on top of it for the past four months.

We say goodbye to our dear father and friend who passed away suddenly, but peacefully on December 26, 2015 at Whitehorse General Hospital. We would like to thank Dr. Tirschmann, the nursing staff and EMS at Whitehorse General Hospital for your care and kindness. A special thank you to Anthony and Sandy on the Medical Ward. Your kindness and compassion will not be forgotten. We would also like to thank the Home Care nurses who came to visit our dad over the last few months.

Your kindness meant the world to him. Thank you also to Heritage North Funeral Home for taking care of us at this difficult time.

Fulvio was born in Lurcrezia, Italy and came to Canada in 1954. In 1956 he came north to Calumet to work for United Keno Hill Mines. He was only going to stay for one year, but he fell in love with the Yukon and never left. He met the love of his life, Alla who was a nurse in Mayo and they married in 1963 and had three children.

Though he always missed his beloved Italy and all his family and friends there, the Yukon was his home. Fulvio was larger than life with an irrepressible spirit of adventure, a true Yukoner. In October 2014 he moved from Mayo to Whitehorse, but his heart remained in Elsa, Keno and Mayo. The most important things in his life were his family and his many friends, near and far. He will be dearly missed by all of us.

Dianne Agnes Jean Wooding (nee Cunningham)

Oct 13, 1938 - Dec 13, 2015 Born in Transcona (Winnipeg) to the late James and Mabel Cunningham, Dianne enjoyed living in several communities throughout Northern Ontario and British Columbia before arriving in Yukon in 2009.

She was predeceased by her previous husband, Leonard Kemble of Manitoba.

She is survived by her loving husband Geoff Wooding of Whitehorse, Yukon; her brother Donald Cunningham (Bonnie) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; her daughter Corinne Kemble (Wayne) of Thunder Bay Ontario; and her son Collin Kemble (Cindy) of British Columbia. Dianne adored her loving grandchildren Caleb and Caitlin Kemble.

Fulvio was predeceased by his wife, Alla and is survived by his three children, Manuela (Herb), Lorenzo and Damien.

After repeated battles with breast cancer and non-smokerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lung cancer, she fought long and hard one last time before peacefully passing away in December 13, 2015.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 2 at 1:00 pm at Sacred Heart Cathedral with interment to follow at Grey Mountain Cemetery. We invite all who knew him to join his family in The General Store at The Gold Rush Inn after the service from 4:00-7:00 pm to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that you make a donation to your favourite charity.

Special thanks go to Dr. Jessica Blaker and to the wonderful, compassionate nursing staff at the Whitehorse General Hospital.
