Run For Water Ethiopia trip meets goal ‘Unreal’ experience for Canadians and villagers alike A trip to Ethiopia by 14 men and women affiliated with Run For Water was such a success, the charity hopes to repeat it for years to come. In November, the 14 runners – including 10 from Abbotsford – travelled to Africa alongside Run For Water executive director Peg Peters to run through the country and meet its people, all while trying to raise $100,000 to provide clean water and a new school for a rural village. Peters said the group – who also paid their own way – met their fundraising goal and had an “unreal” experience in meeting and running with locals from the village being helped. The residents of the remote village, which does not see tourists, were also in a joyous mood and threw a parade and a feast for the Canadians. “It was moving for them to try and figure out why would we come halfway around the world to connect with them,” Peters said. “It was a celebration of the fact they were going to get

access to clean water and they were going to get a school.” Previously, teachers had taught children outside under a tree during those six months of the year when the weather was good. Members of the community – many of whom make less than $1 per day – also contributed $10,000 towards the cost of the school and water project. Construction on the school has already begun, and the runners saw both it and followed in the footsteps of women and girls from the village, who Peters said walk up to two hours each day to get water from an open, unclean source. “That was really moving.” Peters had been to Ethiopia eight times before, but he called this trip the best ever, by far. Participants had a similar experience, calling the trip a “life-changing experience.” The Canadians hit the road for around 10 kilometres each day with local runners.

Christmas Car for local mom

A DAY OF SNOW

Refurbished Altima will help mother of two Laura RODGERS Abbotsford News

It’s been a rough year for Noelani Dreger. But she’s just had one stroke of luck this season — she won this year’s Christmas Car at Abbotsford Nissan, a 2005 Nissan Altima. Dreger is a single mom to two sons: 12-year-old William and nine-year-old Gaberial. Gaberial has been battling heart problems, and Dreger has to make frequent trips back and forth to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. Without a vehicle, she’s been relying on a time-consuming patchwork of buses, taxis and the occasional ride from her dad. But when her mother had a heart attack this spring, caring for her meant Dreger’s father was rarely available to drive her and Gaberial. “I didn’t want to put the burden on my dad. It’s been a stressful year, but we’ve always made do, she said. Dreger’s friend Krista nominated her for the Christmas Car giveaway – a program that’s given a free car to a deserving Abbotsfordian

Krista called her to tell her she’d won, and Dreger was ecstatic. “I felt shocked, amazed. I felt like I was in a dream she said. Dave Jung, the parts and service manager for Abbotsford Nissan, said he and the Christmas Car committee were moved by Dreger’s story. “We really feel like this is going to impact her life in a positive way, he said. The giveaway is sponsored by Abbotsford Nissan, Fix Auto, Aldergrove Auto

Wrecking, 20/20 Auto Glass, Hub Insurance, BCAA, Sherwin Williams Paint and AbbyNews. The automotive sponsors work together to ensure the refurbished car is in tip-top shape, with new paint, shocks, brakes, tires, glass and more. It comes with a $1,000 credit toward insurance and a yearlong BCAA membership, and altogether Jung hopes it’ll give Dreger a year of completely hassle-free driving. Dreger picked up the silver sedan at the dealership in the

Fraser Valley Auto Mall on the morning of Dec. 23, posed for a quick photo with her sons, and immediately got started on errands. The crew visited WalMart and went grocery shopping, all without having to wait in the rain for a bus. The family had plans for a quiet Christmas this year, and was set to visit family in town on Boxing Day. “I’m the type of person who doesn’t go out and ask for anything, said Dreger. “We’re just thankful for what we do have, and who we have around us.

Lee Holeczek, search manager with Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue (CFVSAR), said the incident began with two people in a Jeep who set out at about 2 p.m. and got stuck in the snow on the main logging road before they could reach the top. They were unable to free themselves, and called some friends at about 6 or 7 p.m. to rescue them. That group of four, riding in a pickup truck, also got stuck about 1.5 kilometres from the first pair. The second group hiked the rest of the way, and met up with the first pair. All six worked at trying to free the Jeep, to no avail. They realized they weren’t prepared to stay the

night, and CFVSAR was called out at about 2 a.m. “They got tired and cold and dehydrated, Holeczek said. He said 16 members of CFVSAR and two members from Mission Search and Rescue (MSAR) headed up the mountain, using vehicles equipped with chains on snow tires. They also used MSAR’s Argo vehicle, a specialized ATV that can negotiate through moderate snow. The crews brought the six people safely back down the mountain, leaving their vehicles to be dealt with later in the day. None of the six, who arrived back at the base at 6 a.m., required medical attention. Holeczek reminded the public to be prepared for an overnight stay when they participate in outdoor recreational pursuits. “Most people don’t think anything is going to go wrong, he said.

QUESTION

WebTalk

OF THE WEEK Are you financially better off now than you were at the start of 2015?

Quake rattles B.C. I did wake as I thought upstairs neighbour in our condo near the 5 Corners had dropped something then wondered why my cat Cassy was running around with fur totally fluffed in danger mode. Elizabeth Wesley

To answer, go to abbynews.com

We are in Abbotsford and felt it. It rattled the dishes in the cupboards, it was like a rumbling quake, the last one felt about a year ago was more like a bang, and boom, not the rattling so much. Lori Clarke

LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:

Should regulations on replica handguns be tightened?

Yeah, it shook my house here in East Abbotsford twice. No damage that I know of except to my nerves. Catriona McNeill

You responded:

Big shaker at our townhouse. Ornaments rattled. My heart is pounding so hard right now! Kim Mitchell

Passages of 2015: Bill Bennett Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views The death of former B.C. premier Bill Bennett on Dec. 4 prompted the traditional round of polite tributes. He was the man from Kelowna who remade Vancouver, with SkyTrain, BC Place stadium and Expo 86 to put the city on the world map. He won three majority governments before handing over the steering wheel of a smoothly running Social Credit Party to Bill Vander Zalm. Outside B.C., the wire service obituaries ran to a few paragraphs, defining Bennett first as the “architect of financial restraint in the province.” It seems an ordinary notion today, but when Bennett unleashed his “restraint program” on the B.C. government in 1983, it was presented as a right-wing coup on a socialist utopia. I was in journalism school in Vancouver when unions organized a general strike and

mass street demonstrations under the banner of Operation Solidarity, appropriated from the struggle against Poland’s communist dictators. Their goal was to bring the recently re-elected government to its knees. The newly tabloid Vancouver Province, itself largely controlled by some of B.C.’s most militant unions, was a screeching banshee of the big-labour left. “Socred hitmen swoop on rights workers,” its front page declared after 400 layoff notices were issued to provincial staff. This propaganda was the public’s guide and my professional role model. A bit of background: the B.C. economy was in the grip of an international recession, hitting resource industries and government revenues hard. Bennett had ousted the Dave Barrett NDP government in 1975, but the legacy lived on. During its three-year reign, for example, education spending increased 13 per cent in the first year and 23 per cent in each of the next two.

The blitz of restraint legislation reasserted government’s authority to control the size and wages of provincial staff, reinstated the province’s ability to pay, eliminated various boards, and increased the provincial sales tax to seven per cent to pay the bills. Another Bill Bennett legacy was dismantling the monopoly chokehold of big international unions on public heavy construction. Growing up in northeastern B.C., I had seen the impressive pay for jobs on highway construction, about twice what I earned labouring for a non-union contractor doing city work. A couple of friends discovered the inside track to securing labouring jobs on a provincially funded highway project. After joining the union, those in the know could visit a business agent and hand over $500 cash. Within days, the lucky winner would be “name requested” to join the crew, vaulting over those who thought paying dues and working their way up the seniority list would be enough. This struggle over public construction

No frills. That was Bill Bennett.

continues today, with BC Hydro’s decision to make the Site C dam an open shop. The main contract was awarded to a consortium working with the Christian Labour Association of Canada, an alternative union known by more colourful names among old-line building trades. After graduating from journalism school, I landed my first full-time job as a reporter for the Kelowna Capital News, shortly before Bennett announced his retirement from the premier’s office to finish his term as a backbench MLA. Bennett and I would sometimes arrive for work together, parking our rusty 1976 Chevrolets on Bernard Avenue, where he kept an office above the family furniture store. I found out later that Bennett’s modest old sedan was the government-issue car he had used during his entire 10 years as premier. The party bought it for him as a humorous retirement gift, and he continued to drive it to work. No frills. That was Bill Bennett. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Virtanen, Canada post mixed results at WJC Ben LYPKA Abbotsford News

Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen and the Team Canada world junior hockey championship team got off to a rough start at the International Ice Hockey Federation world junior championship in Finland on Boxing Day, but appear to be settling back into title-contending form. Canada opened with a 4-2 loss to the United States on Boxing Day, with the Americans scoring two goals in the final 3:18 of the game to defeat Canada. Virtanen recorded three shots on goal and was a minus-one in the loss. The team hit the ice again on Monday to battle Denmark, and after falling behind 1-0 early, Canada scored six unanswered goals to dispose of the Danes 6-1. Virtanen registered two shots on goal and was a plus-one against Denmark. Canada again started slow on Tuesday against Switzerland, falling behind 2-0 in the first period, only to knot the game up by the second. The game went to a shootout, and Canada pulled out the 3-2 win. Virtanen had four shots on goal, two penalty minutes

and was a plus-two. Canada’s record now sits at one win, one overtime win and one loss in WJC preliminary robin action. The win clinches a playoff berth at the WJC for the club. They conclude preliminary round action on Thursday when they take on undefeated Sweden at 10 a.m. Quarterfinal and semifinal games occur on Jan. 2 and 4, with the medal

games scheduled for Jan. 5. Virtanen and Canada won gold at last year’s event, defeating Russia in the gold medal game. Canada had previously not won the gold since 2009. December 31, 2015 Frozen Material in Curbside Containers Winter temperatures can freeze garbage and compost inside your curbside container and make it dif¿cult to collect. To avoid injury and damaging containers, collection workers are only able to provide limited shaking and hitting of containers against the truck to dislodge frozen materials. To prevent compostable materials from freezing to the sides of your container, please line it with crumpled newspaper, paper, dry grass, branches or cedar needles. Please also ensure your garbage and compost containers have a secure lid when placing them outdoors to prevent rain from entering and freezing. If you have any questions, please contact the Engineering Department at eng-info@abbotsford.ca or 604-864-5514.

City Waste Collection during Extreme Winter Weather The City will make every attempt to collect curbside recycling, compostables and garbage during snow and ice conditions. However, safety is always the highest priority. If weather conditions pose too high of a risk, we will not be collecting and ask that you set out your materials on your next collection day. The usual container limits will be doubled for areas that have missed a collection day. On some occasions the City, or its contractor, may provide additional collection as soon as possible after the missed collection day. For more information, please see www.abbotsford.ca or call 604-853-5485 regarding CITY pickup or 604-864-5640 regarding CONTRACTOR pickup.

Valley Gravel Sales wins award A small family-owned gravel mining business in AldergroveAbbotsford is celebrating their big win of a provincial award usually reserved for the major mining companies. On Dec. 4, the British Columbia Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation presented the annual Jake McDonald Mine Reclamation Award to Valley Gravel Sales Ltd. at a ceremony held in Vancouver. The trophy now includes the Valley Gravel Sales name alongside major players such as Teck Resources and Highland Valley Copper. “It’s the first time it’s been awarded to a small player like ourselves,” said Barry McLean, who, along with his brother Alan, owns the Valley Gravel Sales business. The award is in recognition of Valley Gravel Sales’ work in reclaiming three Abbotsford gravel pit properties between 2010 and 2013 to a standard where agri-

in 2013. Three feet of sand and screened topsoil was laid down to create ideal growing medium on the acreages, which have since been sold to farmers who now have it in agricultural production. More than a million tonnes of gravel was removed before final reclamation. The topsoil had been stored on the

property and the sand was screened from onsite material as well. Barry and Alan said that approach has been the practice since their late father, Doug McLean, started the company in 1973 alongside their older brothers Rod and Norm. Alan joined the business in 1983, followed by Barry in 1995.

No damage from moderate quake An earthquake reported to have been centered in North Saanich, B.C. could be felt throughout the Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland and portions of Washington state at 11:39 p.m. on Tuesday. Both Earthquake Track and the U.S. Geological Survey have reported the quake registered a magnitude of 4.8, while Natural Resources Canada was reporting 4.3. The sources say the quake occurred about 19 km NNE of Victoria. No significant damage was reported from the quake. But social media was swamped with comments from people who felt the tremour, many saying they were awakened by a loud bang or by the shaking of their home or building.

“Total house shaker,” stated one Facebook post. “That was stronger than previous ones,” stated another. Another Facebook commenter said he heard “several bangs” in the McMillan and Old Yale Road area. “It felt way bigger than the one we had last summer, and the shaking lasted much longer as well.” In August of this year, two minor earthquakes took place in the Abbotsford-Mission area in less than 36 hours. The first one was a magnitude of 2.6, and the second was 2.4. These followed a stronger 3.3 magnitude quake that had been been recorded July 5 in Abbotsford.

‘Adopt a School’ Award for Ten-Broeck It was a case of going in happy, and coming out even happier for some students and personnel at Ten-Broeck Elementary. They were visiting Coles Bookstore in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre recently as the school was selected for an Indigo Adopt a School project. The school was sponsored by Coles Books, which raised over $2,000 dollars for Ten-Broeck to use for new books for their library. When Principal Mark Byrne and students visited the store to accept the cheque, they were given an additional $5,000 book credit! It just happened to be 'Giving Tuesday'. There were big smiles all round as the picture shows. (*"Giving Tuesday" is a global day dedicated to giving back. On December 1, charities, families, businesses, community centres, and students around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.)

Regional Recycling Awards Robert Bateman Secondary School has won a top award for recycling the largest volume of items collected at schools by Regional Recycling throughout the Fraser Valley and Metro Regional Districts. Students raised a total of $1,966.30 last year from their beverage container collections plus won a $500 prize. In addition Mt. Lehman Elementary and Eugene Reimer Middle each won $500 in the random prize draw for their categories. Regional Recycling provides each of our schools with large blue totes for their beverage containers; bottles, cans and juice boxes are collected by students and staff at each site to help raise money for the school. Some schools use this money towards class trips or special supplies for a class activity, while others choose to donate the funds to a charitable organization.

Ryan Matthew Plecas 08/14/87 – 12/18/15

Our very much loved and admired son Ryan, passed away in the early evening, while at his home in Abbotsford. Ryan was our first born and much longed for child. He came into this world two weeks late and now he has left this world far too early. While we so dearly wish that our time with Ryan could have been longer, we feel so fortunate to have been blessed with the gift of an additional 11 years with him, following a devastating accident he had at the age of 17. Those that know Ryan, know he lived these 11 years with an unbelievable courage, strength and optimism. Ryan set very high standards and goals for himself. The week of his death he was confident that some of his biggest dreams and goals were about to come true . . . and he was ecstatic. We love Ryan unconditionally for his strengths and his

weaknesses. We are his parents Joanne and Darryl, his brother Sean, his grandparents Joyce and Don Orr, his aunts, uncles and cousins, and of course his many friends. Ryan, we believe we will hold you in our arms again, hear you laugh and see the twinkle in your eye. Until then, we know you are with your Auntie Sharon, who was and will continue to be, your guardian angel. Ryan we will love you and will be proud of you forever. The celebration of Ryan’s life will be Saturday, January 9th at 11:00 am, at Cascade Community Church, 35190 DeLair Road, Abbotsford, BC. If desired, donations in Ryan’s name can be made to Matthew’s House, Abbotsford (a charity Ryan recently told us he planned to assist in the future) or Ronald McDonald House, London Ontario (who assisted our family when needed 11 years ago).

LOEWEN John April 13, 1917 ~ December 23, 2015 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, John Henry Loewen. He passed away peacefully into Glory and into the presence of his Lord on December 23 at the age of 98. Predeceased by his wife Helen (2000) and 6 siblings, he leaves behind his 5 children and their spouses: Howard Loewen (Irene), Paul Loewen (Annemarie), Elsie Schmidt (Vic), Dan Loewen (Lynn) and Dave Loewen (Val), 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. John was born on April 13, 1917 to Henry and Helena Loewen (nee Klassen) of the Neu-Samara Mennonite colony in Russia. He moved to BC from Saskatchewan in 1940 to look for work but ended up working in a forest camp on Vancouver Island during the war years. In 1944 he married Helen Reimer of Abbotsford. Two years later they purchased land from her father on Huntingdon Road in Abbotsford and farmed there until their retirement in 1976. Caring for his farm, family or the community around him provided him with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. In his retirement years he would often travel to visit family and relatives, regularly open up his home to guests, volunteer to build or fix things for others, and graciously support numerous causes. He was a humble, gentle and wise man who will be missed by many. The Loewen family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at the Menno Home and at Tabor Court for their professional care, compassion and kindness over the past few years. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 7:00 9:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.
