Featuring Arterberry’s kids’ show The Secret Life of Walter Manny. Unique in form, the play seamlessly blends five speaking characters with several mimed adventures.

It tells a charming story of turning rejection into affection to which both children and adults will relate.

Inspired by Arterberry’s son, the play explores the vivid fantasy life of a child. Ostracized at school, eight-yearold Walter escapes into high-octane reveries of racecar driving, firefighting and secret-agent spying similar to the style found in the well-known film starring Ben Stiller.

When a fire threatens the classroom, Walter must use his imaginative skills to save his best friend’s life.

The play was performed for hundreds of people at the 2012 Victoria, Canada Fringe Festival. Audience and critics alike were universal in their praise: “The play, a true gem, resolves with a nugget of wisdom as useful for adults as it is for children …✰✰✰✰ plus one-half stars” — Times Colonist. This show is part of the Teck kids series and performed in the main theatre at the Charles Bailey.

In his early career, Arterberry combined mime, music and special effects to open for rock bands on college campuses, and he eventually toured with major recording stars to iconic theatres and vast sporting arenas. Recently, Arterberry has collaborated with director Gregg Goldston and writer Rob Wipond to create shows that blend his trademark physical expressiveness with multiple speaking characters and dramatic story lines.

The American-born Arterberry now happily calls Sooke, BC home, where he lives with his wife and seven-year-old son, Nate, who continues to inspire him with the powers of the imagination.

Rossland is home to Canada’s oldest Winter Carnival, an event first begun by a Norwegian miner named Olaus Jeldness in 1898.

The carnival is still a major event in Rossland 118 years later and will take place once more from Thursday, Jan. 28 to Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016.

Jeldness first came to Rossland in 1896 and is known as the father of competitive skiing in Canada. He held the first recorded Canadian ski competition in Rossland in 1897.

The following year, Winter Carnival was born and included the Canadian Champion Ski Race and the first Canadian Championship Ski Jumping contest. Jeldness won both events.

These days, Winter Carnival still embraces the spirit of competition with the Sonny Samuelson Bobsled Race and John Heintz

Relay Race.

The bobsled race will take place on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 9:30 a.m. on Spokane Street and an award presentation will follow at the Olaus Ice Palace, which will be located at Queen St. and Columbia Ave. Teams wishing to register for the race can do so at the Legion on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. and must submit their bobsled to a mandatory brake and steering check.

Those who enter the race can expect lots of competition.

“In the past couple of years we’ve had about 27 or 28 teams,” said Tara Kowalchuk from the Winter Carnival committee.

Participants should also preregister for “The Game” Rail Jam and the John Heintz Relay Race.

Participants for the rail jam can preregister at RossVegas on Saturday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. The actual event will take place on Queen St. between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

at Bear Country Kitchen until Sunday, Jan. 31 and at RED Mountain Resort in the conference room on the day of the event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The relay starts at 1 p.m. and runs from the top of Red Mountain to Lions campground and an awards ceremony will follow at the campground.

The Kids’ Carnival will also be taking place at 1 p.m. at the Lions campground, so parents can bring their children to have some fun while they wait for the racers to cross the finish line.

“There’s just different games and activities for kids out there,” said Kowalchuk. “They sell hot dogs and hot chocolate.”

In addition to the old favourites, there are also some new things planned for this year.

“There’s a couple of new things this year.

The main one is that the Ice Palace will now be open on both Friday and Saturday night, which is new for us,” said Kowalchuk.

Friday night the Ice Palace will feature a performance by Best Of at 8 p.m. and Saturday night it will be a venue for Blizzard

Music Festival, with a performance by John Lee’s Hooker and The Wet Secrets.

Blizzard Fest will be running from Thursday, Jan. 28 to Saturday, Jan. 30 and features 15 bands, including local acts.

The first show is Thursday night at 8 p.m., when the Devin Cuddy Band will perform at the Old Fire Hall.

Humans will close the festival at the Flying Steamshovel on Saturday at 11 p.m.

It takes a lot of people to make the carnival happen.

The Winter Carnival is planned by a committee of ten directors, and “then each event is actually planned by volunteers, who aren’t actually on the main board of directors, they are event volunteers. So each event is run by a specific volunteer or a pair of volunteers,” said Kowalchuk. “Then to make all the other stuff happen we had about 120 volunteers last year.”

Award-winning author and conceptual poet Jordan Abel will be spending the Christmas holidays in the West Kootenays working on an upcoming project while visiting his wife, Castlegar News reporter Chelsea Novak.

Abel’s most recent book Un/Inhabited has received several honours and is included in CBC’s list of the best 75 books of 2015. CBC also put Abel on its list of 12 writers to watch in 2015. Un/Inhabited is a book of conceptual poetry using 91 different Western novels as its source material. Abel found those books on the Project Gutenberg website, a site that hosts works that are in the public domain, meaning their copyrights have expired. He took the books and entered them into a single Word document consisting of over 10,000 pages. Using the basic Control-F function in his word processor he then searched all of the books simultaneously for words relating to land, ownership and territory, such as settler or frontier.

Abel felt the subject matter was an important one to explore. “As a Nisga’a writer, I feel that issues of land, territory and ownership are very important Indigenous issues that are often unaddressed or under-addressed in contemporary poetry.”

“My conceptual work uses the words from those Western novels to critique that genre,” said Abel. The critique is not a positive one, it points out how the Western genre is problematic towards Indigenous peoples. One such negative example gave rise to the title of the book.

“The title came up because there is a thing that happens in Western novels where they talk about a space or body of land as being uninhabited, as in no one being there,” said Abel. “However, it is often the case that there were Indigenous peoples there, but they are just represented as this blank space. the protagonist’s position, they are seeing Indigenous peoples as nonexistent, or kind of blank. They’re seeing that space as being uninhabited, when it actually was inhabited by Indigenous people.”

Abel’s next book which will come out in spring 2016 is titled Injun and will be published by Talon Books. It is a part of the same conceptual project as Un/Inhabited, the two books are complimentary works. Where Un/Inhabited looks at land and ownership, Injun looks at race and identity.

Search for loose cheetah called off BRIAN L AWRENCE Creston Valley Advance

With no confirmed sightings since the first one, the BC Conservation Officer Service is no longer actively searching for a cheetah on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, but the investigation isn’t over.

“We have spoken to a person of interest regarding our investigation into this,” said Insp.

Joe Caravetta on Monday. However, he told 103.5 Juice FM, “The person of interest is not co-operating with us and that is making the investigation more difficult. We are working with the province of Alberta and the province of Ontario on this as well.”

Residents of Crawford Bay and Kootenay Bay were asked to be wary after a cheetah was spotted on Highway 3A around 4:30 p.m.

Thursday near the two communities. The witness photographed the animal, which was wearing an orange cloth collar. The incident made national and international headlines.

Speculation also ran rampant on social media that the cheetah may have been one of a pair that an Ontario couple proposed to bring to Kaslo in 2013. Those animals, a male named Robin and a female named Annie Rose, were never approved to come to BC and were subsequently taken to Discovery Wildlife Park in Innisfail, Alta., a zoo that takes in orphaned wildlife and exotic animals.

The CBC quoted an official there who said

the cheetah on the East Shore resembled Annie Rose. Doug Bos said the markings, collar, and other details matched Annie, who was at his facility until October 2014.

“I don’t know 100 per cent for sure if [it is] the same cheetah,” he told CBC News. “But the chances of [it] not being the same cheetah are very unlikely.”

Bos indicated Annie and Robin left the facility partly for safety reasons — Annie seemed likely to stalk children — but he didn’t say where the animals went.

Creston RCMP worked with the Conservation Officer Service since the sighting in an attempt to safely locate the cheetah.

Despite concerns raised on social media, the service plans to keep the animal alive and has arranged for a new home.

“We have no plans to kill the cheetah,” said Caravetta. “We fully intend if we find it to have it taken to the Calgary Zoo.” The Conservation Officer Service said in a news release last week that a cheetah is typically shyer and less aggressive then other members of the big cat family, such as lions, tigers and jaguars.

Caravetta said the animal presents no immediate safety risk to the public. However, if the animal is spotted, authorities warn observers not to approach it but instead to call the controlled species unit of the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 to report the sighting.

Conservation officers have stopped looking for the cheetah sighted last week near Crawford Bay but are still wondering where it came from.

With cold, snowy weather over the weekend, he said the cheetah may have found a warm place to stay, so it’s possible that it may still be at large.

“They’re not made for this climate,” he said.

He was impressed by the assistance the BC Conservation Officer Service received from area residents.

“We really want to thank the people in that area for helping us,” he said. “It’s been a tremendous support.”

Waterloo now part of lower Ootischenia GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

One hundred twenty-sixth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Last week we started looking at Montgomery, Monte Carlo, and Waterloo, short-lived mining towns on the east side of the Columbia River south of Castlegar which were at least nearby if they weren’t the same place altogether.

Montgomery was named for Robert Fowler Montgomery HornePayne (1869-1929), chair of the Lillooet, Fraser River and Cariboo Gold Fields Ltd., which owned the townsite. Monte Carlo and Waterloo were named after mines in the area.

As a correspondent to the Victoria Daily Colonist of Sept. 3, 1896 described it, “At Waterloo Landing a very large city might be built. The flat is 40 miles long and several miles in breadth. The Columbia river leaves the front of the new town of Montgomery, and very little grading will be required when substantial buildings come to be erected on the plot. At present there are about 50 residents at the Landing … Several persons have come to Montgomery prepared to build substantial hotel and business houses …

“One man whom I met was felicitating himself upon the prospect of a legal contest between the three great corporations — the CPR, the Corbin, and the Heinze railway interests — with the Horne-Payne syndicate constituting a good fourth in the fight. He said that the bond, through some mistake, was claimed by all three railway companies, and that neither the Canadian Pacific Railway nor the Corbin companies would recognize the sale of Montgomery townsite.”

No one seems to have ever seen the Montgomery townsite plan, but Elsie Turnbull wrote in the winter 1976 issue of Canada West that Montgomery “was surveyed a halfmile upriver from Monte Carlo.”

Post office applications were filed for Montgomery on Aug. 22, 1896 and for Waterloo on Sept. 18, 1896.

Waterloo’s application gave its population as 10 families plus 200 to 300 single men and noted the townsite wasn’t surveyed.

Montgomery was described in its application as “about ½ mile north of Waterloo. Its population was estimated as four families plus 75 single men. J.R. Hunnex was the proposed postmaster. A post office never opened at Montgomery (possibly because there was already one

Waterloo Rd. and Waterloo Eddy remember a short-lived mining town on the Columbia River. by that name in Saskatchewan) but the Waterloo post office opened on May 1, 1897 — with Hunnex as postmaster. It was short lived.

A letter to postal authorities dated Oct. 25, 1898 stated all residents were leaving and Hunnex was moving to Erie. The post office closed on Dec. 1.

Strangely, a Rossland law firm made another application for a post office at Montgomery in June 1901, but a follow-up letter two days later stated an error was made: Waterloo wanted the post office, not Montgomery. Postal inspector W.H. Dorman sent a letter to the post-

master general in November 1901 stating “in the event of a post office being established at Castlegar, it will probably not be necessary to open one at Montgomery.” It didn’t open — Castlegar got its post office in April 1902.

Montgomery was never heard of again after that, although the name Waterloo stuck around for a while: it was applied to the area the Doukhobors acquired in 1908.

However, according to George Woodcock and Ivan Avakumovic in their book The Doukhobors, the pacifist group renamed it Brilliant to erase Waterloo’s military asso-

ciation. This suggests Waterloo had crept several miles further north, for the original Waterloo Landing was in what today is considered lower Ootischenia. Brilliant and Waterloo were used interchangeably for a few years.

A late reference appeared in the Nelson Daily News of Feb. 7, 1911: “Mr. Landis states that the Doukhobor colony at Waterloo is at present engaged in cutting timber and getting out ties.”

Today Waterloo is remembered

by Waterloo Rd. and Waterloo Eddy.

The latter is close to the original landing.

Variable speed limits coming to three highways

The gallery 2 staff and board are pleased to welcome well-known Grand Forks resident and longtime gallery member Terry Woodruff.

Woodruff has lived in the area for 18 years and has a deep commitment to the community. She is an artist herself and brings her passion for the arts to her new position.

Most may know Woodruff from

her management position at the Bank of Montreal, as well as 11 years with the Grand Forks Credit Union management team. After a 30-year career, Terry retired early to continue her art education and work as a private management consultant. She most recently served as treasurer for the Grand Forks Art Gallery Society, stepping down to assume the role of interim executive director.

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the talented curatorial and operational gallery staff as well as the many dedicated volunteers,” said Woodruff.

JEFF NAGEL BL ACK PRESS New electronic speed signs that activate in bad weather to reduce the speed limit are now being installed on stretches of the Sea-To-Sky Highway, the Coquihalla and Highway 1 near Revelstoke.

The province committed to the variable speed zones at the same time it decided to raise the posted maximums to 120 km/h on portions of the Coquihalla, and to 100 km/h on much of the Seato-Sky Highway.

The 47 digital signs are to go live in early 2016 and when they’re activated the dialed-down limit will be enforceable by police.

The province had promised the digital signs would be in place for this winter, but with two to three months of testing still required, winter may be mostly over on the Highway 99 section by the time they’re working.

An extensive system of traffic, pavement and visibility sensors will be calibrated to detect challenging conditions — whether it’s extreme cold, freezing rain or heavy snowfall — and provide a recommended speed to operations staff, who will update the maximum speed shown on digital signs.

Overhead message signs at the entrance to each corridor will tell drivers they’re entering a variable speed zone and to be aware of changing weather conditions.

The transportation ministry is spending $12.5 million to install and run the three pilot systems.

Officials hope the pilot project will spur more drivers to reduce speed in severe winter conditions and save lives.

Police say they’re developing procedures to fairly enforce the variable limits and ensure drivers have seen the signs before tickets are issued.

“There’s huge challenges from the enforcement

“We have to be absolutely coordinated with the province when they’re turning them down.”

Dubord said variable speed zones will help mitigate the risk from the increased speed limits, which he said police chiefs still have qualms about.

“We would still like to have seen the speeds stay where they were, on the Coquijalla especially,” Dubord said, adding speed remains a major contributor to fatal crashes.

Crews are installing 16 variable signs on the Sea to Sky from Squamish to Whistler, 13 on the Coquihalla from Portia interchange to the old toll plaza, and 18 on Highway 1 from Perry River to Revelstoke.

For what is likely the first time in Canada, doctors enrolled in the inaugural year of the Kootenay Boudary Rural Residency Family Medicine Program have a new tool as a required part of their training: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

Dr. Kyle Merritt, behavioural medicine lead for the UBC Rural Residency program in Kootenay Boundary, describes the program as a life changing, practice changing strategy.

“Often these types of programs are included as either electives or short onehour lectures,” he added.

“We realized quickly that this work should be an essential part of our residents training and we can’t thank Dr. Christie and the Kalein Hospice enough for their support in making it happen.”

Alongside other care practitioners including mental health professionals, midwives and social service providers, MBSR teacher Dr. Devon Christie taught the residents a series of formal practices including body scan, yoga, walking meditation and focused attention meditations.

Kim Bater, executive director at the Kalein Hospice where the MBSR training was held said, “When we approached local doctors to discuss the idea, they embraced the opportunity whole-heartedly. The MBSR program fit perfectly with our goal to bring a broad range of care professionals together to create the dynamic, collaborative learning environment that is essential for high quality care.”

The seven-week long MBSR course has multiple benefits to both practitioner and patient. Through increased mindfulness and self-awareness, research shows MBSR improves perception, decreases reactivity to stressful stimuli, and promotes better control in buffering psychological responses to stressors. For practitioners, reduced stress means less burn out and greater life satisfaction. For patients, not only can practitioners impart their knowledge of MBSR, they can also attend to their own physical, mental, and emotional processes during patient encounters, helping them to act with “compassion, technical competence, presence and insight.”
