we’d like to write in ’16 OUR WISH LIST: Here’s to a more peaceful, more generous and healthier community
L ❚ Which stories were the most-viewed online during 2015, page 3 ❚ We count down the Top 10 stories in Surrey and Delta pages 4-18 ❚ A few of our favourite photos published in the Now from 2015, page 8 ❚ The biggest arts and enterainment stories from the year, page 19
ooking forward, there are many things we’d like to see come to pass in 2016. An obvious wish is for fewer shootings. Last year there were so many local shootings that on occasion we found ourselves updating editorials on the subject, in the middle of the writing, because – guess what – we just had one more shooting. On a much larger public safety scale, it’s our deepest wish for terrorists and other purveyors of mayhem to lay down their arms, head up to the North Pole and make a career out of counting snowflakes. Imagine. Federally, we hope to see all kinds of “sunny” tax breaks from the Trudeau government, that is for Canadians who really need them. Locally, we’d like to see Surrey First govern the city as though it were an election year. We’d like to see the remainder of the 100 Mounties promised for Surrey to arrive yesterday. It would also be extremely satisfying to see the largesse that the community has extended to Syrian refugees be extended to all people in the community who are going through a rough patch, and that such generosity extends well beyond the holiday. Moreover, we hope we get to publish these headlines: ❚ Surrey Eagles win the Royal Bank Cup ❚ Surrey Innovation Boulevard scientists discover cure for cancer ❚ Surrey records lowest homicide rate in 57 years ❚ Fraser Health removes pay parking at hospitals ❚ Delta’s new Massey Bridge won’t be tolled after all ❚ Food Bank closes for lack of clients ❚ Everyone who resolved to quit smoking succeeds ❚ Surrey Now wins Pulitzer Prize (Ahem) Well, we can only hope. It is a wish list, after all.

Back care is obviously a priority, and to that end Panorama Chiropractic provides both manual adjustments and tension-releasing “impulse” adjustments. The clinic also offers soft tissue healing across the body in the form of laser therapy. Plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, and even rotator cuff pain are just some of the issues laser can help correct. Looking back at the year’s most compelling people and issues in our communities
Excerpts from the Now’s most-viewed stories online

“Surrey woman near suicide bomb attack on Syrian refugees in Lebanon” (Nov. 12) Surrey nurse Zeina Ayache was in Lebanon with family and visited Beirut less than 24 hours before suicide bombers killed more than 40 people and injured another 200 or more on a street she had stood on. It’s said to be one of the deadliest strikes the country has had since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis with ISIS. “Right now the world is complaining about how Starbucks’ cup is red, but what about the streets in Lebanon? They’re red right now. Let’s talk about that,” Ayache said.
“A daughter’s downward spiral” (Dec. 17) Facing an ‘epidemic’ level of mental illness and addiction among youth, experts are focusing on helping children like South Surrey’s Adriana Falcon, who lost her life to drugs at just 15 years old. It was B.C. law, according to father Rick Falcon, that made it difficult to make decisions on her behalf. He believes treatment should become involuntary at some point. “These kids don’t usually aspire to put down a GI Joe and pick up a meth pipe,” said Rick. “Something pushed them to that.” For Adriana, it was a sexual assault.

“Former Tory MP endorses Surrey Liberal candidate” (Oct. 15) Former Surrey Conservative MP Dona Cadman traded blue for red in the 2015 Canadian federal election, endorsing Liberal MP candidate Randeep Sarai in the contest for Surrey Centre. Cadman served as MP for Surrey North from 2008 to 2011, the same riding her husband Chuck represented as a Reform, Canadian Alliance, Conservative and finally Independent MP. The couple entered politics after lobbying for justice reform following the murder of their son Jesse in 1992. Cadman told the Now the “Conservative have become the party they were against when they first came in,” adding, “It isn’t the same party I joined with. I don’t like negative adds.”

“Storm causes thousands of power outages” (Aug. 29) A windstorm knocked out power to more than 200,000 customers in southwestern
British Columbia. Most of the affected homes were in the Lower Mainland, including Surrey. Spokeswoman Simi Heer said the utility has launched its storm response plan, bringing together decision-makers into one room in Surrey to ensure efficient deployment of crews and resources. Heer said the outages are generally due to trees and branches falling on power lines and crews are working hard to repair damage, but customers should be patient.

“Gordon Manor’ rises again as a spooky landmark in North Delta” (Oct. 28) For a couple months each year, as summer fades and fall begins to show its colours, Gord Sauck and his wife Susan work to build a local landmark. Their “Gordon Manor,” located in the heart of the Sunshine Hills neighbourhood in North Delta, is a go-to place at Halloween. The manor name represents Gord’s given

name and Susan’s family name, Gordon. On Craigslist back in 2012, Sauck spotted a “haunted house” façade for sale and bought it from a Port Coquitlam couple who, as part of the deal, helped put it together on the driveway of his home. Ever since, it’s been temporarily decorated with an ever-expanding assortment of lights, lasers, projected images, thundering sounds and animatronics. On Halloween night, the street is blocked off to allow hundreds of people to safely gather outside.

“Mother killer found guilty of second-degree murder” (Sept. 29) A Surrey woman who stabbed her mother 24 times with the force of pounding a nail into hard wood and left her to die on her basement suite floor with the knife still stuck in her chest was found guilty of second-degree murder. Gloria Zerbinos, 30, wore a blank expression as B.C. Supreme Court Justice Frits Verhoeven described the attack, in which the victim was repeatedly stabbed through her heart. “It is clear the attack was extremely violent and at least somewhat prolonged,” the judge noted. Zerbinos’ “lethal intention,” he said, “could hardly be more emphatically demonstrated.” Earlier this year, Verhoeven rejected Zerbinos’ defence that she should be found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder in the Nov. 8, 2012 stabbing death of her 43-year-old mother Panagiota “Yota” Zerbinos.
Single-sentence stories A (very) quick look at some things about New Year’s that might be news to you.
If you’ve ever wondered what the heck “Auld Lang Syne” means, it’s old Scottish for “old long since” and means “times gone by.” The concept of New Years Resolutions is believed to have been invented by the Babylonians but anyone can pretty much break theirs no matter where they live in the world. On midnight, Dec. 31, Buddhist temples bang their gongs 108 times in an effort to to drive away 108 types of human weakness.
It’s a Spanish tradition to eat 12 grapes when the clock strikes midnight, with the intended result being 12 happy months ahead. If you want to wish somebody Happy New Year in Welsh, you’d say “Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.” In Latin, it’s “Felix sit annus novus.” Source: Factmonster.com

Surrey prepares to house Syrian refugees
S
footage of a dead child refugee was seen around the world. The Liberals promised to accept 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015 if elected, while the Tories promised 10,000. After the Liberals took the election, Trudeau changed that promise to 10,000 by the end of 2015 and the rest by the end of February. The matter is of particular importance in Surrey, which typically takes in the most government-assisted refugees (GARs) in B.C. From 2010 to 2013, 701 GARs arrived in Surrey. It’s been estimated that 1,000 of the refugees to arrive as part of the government’s commitment will land in Surrey. Of those, 500 are expected to be children and will enter the Surrey School District. Some service groups say they need more money to deliver adequate programming to those coming, such as Whalley’s Umoja Compassion Society. Terrorist attacks in places such as Paris and Beirut further stirred public debate on the issue. That led to a Surrey Interfaith Pilgrimage being planned. The walk was to honour victims of those attacks but also to foster understanding between people of different backgrounds. “It’s so easy to fear each other,” said Minister Will Sparks with Northwood United Church during the event. “We can’t be doing that.” Donations of clothing and furniture have flooded into local organizations that help refugees, such as the Middle Eastern Friendship Centre in Whalley. Several initiatives were launched, including Operation Backpack, to give child refugees everything they need to begin school, as well as a bike drive led by local kids. 110910

New bridge brings more tolls
I
f you’re wondering for whom the bridges are tolled, they’re tolled for thee. Surrey and North Delta residents learned this month that the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel, at a cost of $3.5 billion, will be tolled with crossing fees “comparable” to those charged on the Port Mann Bridge. Crossing the Port Mann Bridge currently costs commuters anywhere between $1.60 for motorcyclists to $9.45 for large trucks. The tolls on that bridge rose on Aug. 15. Construction of the new 10-lane bridge, to be built over the Fraser River at Highway 99 on the same spot as the aging tunnel, is expected to begin in early 2017. The goal: Fix what is now considered to be the worst traffic bottleneck in the province. While that’s good news, motorists having to pay a toll to cross four of the five local bridges connecting civilization south of the Fraser River with that of the north – namely, Golden Ears Bridge, the new Port Mann, George Massey Bridge and the eventual replacement of the aged Pattullo Bridge – will no doubt transform the last free option, the Alex Fraser Bridge, into a parking lot.

Nobody hurt but 220 people lose homes to massive fire in Whalley
R
oughly 220 Whalley residents lost their homes in a spectacular early morning fire on Sept. 30. Flames ripped through the Access apartment complex in the 10800-block of City Parkway. Some tenants had to be rescued from their balconies. Surrey firefighters think the fire was started by “smoking materials.” In layman terms, that’s maybe a cigarette butt. The fire is believed to have started outside, shortly before 6 a.m., and worked its way up into the roof of the four-story complex. Close to 100 of the 253 units were affected. Roughly 30 firefighters fought the three-alarm blaze and social service workers were kept busy in the following days helping to set up emergency shelter at local hotels for those people who were burned out. Thankfully, nobody was injured.

Water restrictions cause tension

drought hit the Lower Mainland hard this summer. Due to unseasonably dry and hot weather, Metro Vancouver had higher than normal water restrictions and air quality advisories were issued several times due to wildfires throughout the province. Stage 3 restrictions for Metro Vancouver began on July 20, banning lawn sprinkling and carwashing completely, as well as pressure washing and the refilling of pools and water features. By early September, the restrictions were brought down to Stage 2, which meant limited lawn sprinkling could resume and car washing was permitted, but only with automatic shutoff hose nozzles. In Surrey, the weather led to a pond almost completely drying up in Fraser Heights.
The pond was home to two Koi fish that were released there illegally decades ago. The city classified the pond as ornamental, and as such, said it couldn’t refill the pond under the restrictions. A petition was launched in August by residents in attempts to save the fish and one was rescued. In early July, Delta closed Watershed Park, Cougar Canyon Nature Reserve, North 40 Park Reserve and the Delta Nature Reserve to the public. That was after the fire danger rating had been upgraded from high to extreme. And a North Delta couple was not impressed when, during Stage 3 restrictions, school lawns were being watered – and it wasn’t even school season. “I don’t like to be double standarded,” said one. “They should be fining themselves, too.”

Federal Liberals paint the town red in a majority win over Harper’s Conservatives
F
ederal Liberals painted the town red in October’s federal election as part of a nationwide electoral sweep that gave Tory prime minister Stephen Harper’s nine-year-old government the brush-off. With the exception of former Surrey mayor Dianne Watts, who held onto South Surrey-White Rock for the Conservatives, the other five ridings in Surrey and Delta went Liberal. Other than Sukh Dhaliwal, prior to this election Surrey and Delta voters hadn’t elected an MP from the Liberal Party in many decades. Some local highlights of the federal election — which itself made history as the longest ever Canadian election campaign at 78 days — included Watts’ controversial campaign flyer concerning terrorists,
Justin Trudeau led his Liberals to an election win on Oct. 19, with most of Surrey and Delta siding with the victors. a dubious “security breach” by three environmentalists whilst Harper was stumping at the Aria Banquet Hall in Brownsville, and former Surrey North Tory MP Dona Cadman endorsing Liberal MP candidate
Randeep Sarai in the contest for Surrey Centre. “It isn’t the same party I joined with,” Cadman said of Harper’s Conservatives. The election in Surrey saw NDP MPs Jasbir Sandhu and

Jinny Sims lose their seats, as did veteran Conservative MP Nina Grewal, in Fleetwood-Port Kells. Her loss marked the end of an era in Surrey politics as the city had a Grewal MP since 1997, when Gurmant Grewal was first elected as Reform MP for what was then Surrey Central. He was re-elected in 2000 under the Canadian Alliance banner, and in 2004 as Conservative MP in NewtonNorth Delta. He didn’t run in 2006 and was a political sideliner ever since. His wife Nina was a three-term MP, representing the Conservatives from 2004 until Liberal Ken Hardie defeated her in October. The Grewals had made Canadian history as the first married couple to serve as MPs at the same time.

A game of political football ensues as Surrey waits for 100 new Mounties
O
ur list would not be complete without mention of the Surrey 100. Mounties, that is. Surrey’s city council and the provincial government called on the federal government to deploy 100 new Mounties to the city’s streets following a recordbreaking 25 homicides in 2013, growing fear from residents and a flurry of drive-by shootings this past year. The former Conservative government promised to deliver, under intense pressure from then Surrey NDPs Jasbir Sandhu and Jinny Sims, but the question of just when the new officers would arrive, and in what increments, became quite a political football at all levels of government. The resulting information vacuum wore on increasingly impatient Surrey residents as well. Surrey had been asking

Our view
A new year brings new increases and fee hikes
N
ew Year’s Day of course heralds a fresh step forward. But increasingly, Jan. 1 has also come to mark the day when yet more rate hikes take effect. Like the march of time, ever forward, tax and fee increases never seem to relax on New Year’s Day but continue ever forward, ever higher, ever widening the gap between what we earn and what they take from us. Tomorrow, Jan. 1, Medical Service Premiums will rise from $3 per month for a single person earning more than $30,000 per year — hardly a living wage. A family of two, in that same category, will pay $5.50 more per month and a family of three or more, again earning more than $30,000 per year, will pay $6 more each month. That’s $36, $66 and $72 more per year, respectively. A few bucks might not seem like a lot, but a few bucks here and there, there and here, certainly does add up. This year, expect to pay more in ICBC basic rates, hydro, rent, cable, telephone and internet services and other stuff as every level of government, Crown corporation and business that can get away with charging you more, will charge you more. And while our dollar plummets, and groceries are increasingly expensive, the gouging continues. Those of us who can still afford to buy liquor will no doubt indulge tonight. Tomorrow is a brave new day. When the clock strikes midnight tonight, many of us will make new years resolutions. None, we’re sure, will resolve to voluntarily pay more in taxes and fees. If only government and Crown corporations would resolve to manage taxpayers’ hard-earned and increasingly scarce money competently, it would indeed be a happy new year.

Canuckifying those Yankeeisms SoLetItBeDone Tom Zytaruk
So let it be written… New York, Manitoba. Yep, that’s the way it should be. At the risk of sounding small, I have to say it does kind of irk me when big-time movie companies come up north to shoot their pictures — because our towns are cool and our scenery, awesome — only to co-opt our greatness into some kind of Yankee falsehood. The other weekend, for example, I watched First Blood — the first of the Rambo series, shot in Hope BRITISH COLUMBIA in 1982. I’d seen the movie before, but my teenage boys hadn’t and understandably took umbrage with the fact Hollywood had, rather naughtily, characterized the town as Hope, Washington. No way! You might recall that seasonal flick,
Deck the Halls (2006). Shot here in Surrey, but set in — get this — Cloverdale, Massachussetts. Humbug! Why not shoot it in Cloverdale, California, Cloverdale, Indiana, Cloverdale, Kansas, Cloverdale, Minnesota, Cloverdale, Mississippi, Cloverdale, Ohio, Cloverdale, Wisconsin, Cloverdale, Oregon or Cloverdale, Virginia? Because our Cloverdale is better, that’s why. Remember that flick about a giant crocodile, Lake Placid? This 1999 movie was set in Black Lake, Maine, but actually shot here in Surrey and at Shawnigan Lake, Buntzen Lake and Hayward Lake here in Beautiful British Columbia. Maine? Yeah, right. All lies. Here’s the real scoop. You should all know that all United States Olympic Gold Medalists were and are Canadians — every last one of them. The woman who modeled for
the statue of Liberty was, of course, Canadian. So was George Washington, and Abe Lincoln, eh. The U.S. flag was invented by a Canadian. So was Disneyland. The Alamo, you should also know, was constructed from a pre-assembled kit produced in Edmonton, Alberta. And, oh, yeah, about that so-called American Cheese, it’s not that at all. It’s not even Cheddar Cheese. It’s Canadian Cheese! There’s more. Remember Davy Crocket? Born in Ontario. Babe Ruth was born and raised in Saskatchewan, and preferred hockey to baseball. Douglas MacArthur hailed from Nunavut and Neil Armstrong came from where else but Armstrong, B.C. Conversely, Justin Bieber is American. Just like Donald Trump. So there’s that. Feels good to finally set things straight. So let it be done. Tom Zytaruk is a staff writer with the Now. You can reach Tom via email at tom.zytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Granddaughter’s tragic story will bring hope to some families The Editor, Re: “A daughter’s downward spiral,” the Now, Nov. 17. I wanted to thank reporter Amy Reid for such a well written article about my granddaughter. Reid did justice to her memory and brought Adriana Falcon much needed attention to this horrific plight that is effecting so many young people. Each time her story is shared, I have to believe it will have a positive effect on all involved. On a personal note my son is driven to try to find not only justice for his sweet Adriana but to also help and support other parents who are going through the same nightmare. And sadly, there are far too many, which is really sad. There are many other “Adrianas” out there who need to know there is help. Also, parents need to have the power to step in and decide when to have them forced into treatment if they are young and are a danger to themselves. Again, I’m so grateful for all you did to get this told once again.
❚ Broke her election promise to reduce crime, – violent crime has increased 40 per cent so far this year. ❚ Broke her election promise to have 100 new police officers this year. ❚ Broke her election promise to have LRT up and running by 2018, regardless if the transit referendum failed. ❚ Broke her election promise to not increase taxes – rather, she added a $100 cultural and recreation levy just after the election. Taxes will likely increase again next year. ❚ Broke her election promise to listen, engage and be accountable to the residents. Hepner has been mostly invisible, as she has spent most of the year hiding from the media. Regrettably, we have another three years under Hepner and her “Developers First” party. But I have a feeling she won’t last her term. Sandip Sandhu, Surrey
Column was a blessing
The Editor, Re: “Chasing that mysterious Christmas spirit,” the Now, Dec. 24. My heart was filled with gladness as I read Barbara Falcon, Adriana’s “Grams” Tom Zytaruk’s column. What a wonderful reminder and encouragement to all of us and we thank you for presenting it to us. May we all have the Christmas spirit all year long and may you bless us with more items of a The Editor, Let’s reflect on Mayor Linda Hepner’s election similar nature. Carolyn Hawkins, Surrey promises and her first year in office:
Hepner’s year a disaster
Ros ooses seess sses
rotten r otte n
❚ Roses to Sport Chek in Guildford for having one pair of breast cancer gloves left in the sale rack – thanks to you I replaced the pair I lost. ❚ Roses to Chapters for providing such excellent costumer service in Newton! You will be sadly missed by every one of us who supported you over the years. Farewell! ❚ Roses to the owner of Spa Utopia who though very well dressed, played plumber and took apart the pipes under their bathroom sink to retrieve my wife’s earring! ❚ Roses to Lawrence and his crew from Roof King for the absolutely incredible job they did re-roofing our house last weekend. You left our property looking immaculate and the roof is beautiful. I hope the owner of the company realizes what a wonderful ambassador you are for his business. Again, a huge thank you for a job very well done.
❚ Rotten tomatoes to Surrey’s bylaw department for its lame excuses as to why it doesn’t enforce bylaws. I have reported an illegal suite but after almost four months they haven’t even talked to the owner or made an inspection. Why are we paying for city workers who aren’t doing anything but collecting big wages? ❚ We feel sorry for the punks who ripped off used motor oil from Canadian Tire and doused the windows and doors of small businesses in the plaza. As we send you a truck load of rotten tomatoes, we are sad that your holiday spirit was so mean and pointless. Hope your lives straighten out before it’s too late. ❚ Rotten tomatoes to people who don’t understand how lines work at the till. When a new cashier opens and says, “I can help the next person in line,” that means the next person in line. Not you at the end! With long holiday lineups, I’ve seen fights nearly begin over this. Wait your turn, folks.

WAT E R M A I N F L U S H I N G As part of the City’s maintenance program, the flushing of the watermains in the areas located between 144th Street & Highway #17 & 88th Avenue to Highway #17 will occur from October 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016.

Flushing of watermains is required to remove sediments and to maintain water quality. This may result in your water supply appearing cloudy due to the sediments. Since some staining of laundry may result and some industrial processes may be affected, we recommend the following. • Run your cold water tap until the water clears up • Check the water supply prior to doing laundry
S
If in doubt, call the Water Department at 604-591-4152 from 8 am - 4 pm or 604-543-6700 after hours. Thank you for your cooperation.

everal storms walloped the region this year, but a particularly violent one in late August caused power outages to hundreds of thousands of homes across the Lower Mainland, leaving some without power for several days. It was the single largest power outage event BC Hydro has ever seen. Surrey city workers alone dealt with more than 150 fallen trees. The outages were costly for many Surrey businesses. The Surrey Night Market was ravaged. “Tents were ripped apart, our fence came down, everything was destroyed,” said director Gary Grewal. The market had to call it quits for the season early and estimated $100,000 in damage. The Surrey Food Bank was an

But Save-On-Foods stepped up to help replace the lost product. Meanwhile, a woman was left fighting for her life after being hit by a falling tree during the storm, near 148th Street and 100th Avenue. Police said the woman, in her 40s, was with her daughter when she saw tree branches falling. She apparently tried to warn others before being struck. Luckily, her daughter managed to jump out of the way. The woman, whose family identified her as homeless, was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, then transferred to Vancouver General. Now staff

EXTEND NATURE’S WARRANTY. RECYCLE YOUR ELECTRONICS.
according to some residents, it left a mess. Well over 1,000 people signed a petition demanding the provincial government stop the spraying in Surrey and Delta. So, why kill the gypsy moths? They are an invasive European pest that eat the leaves of trees and shrubs, posing a serious threat to B.C.’s fruit producers, lumber industry and, by extension, B.C.’s economy. They were found in traps in Surrey in 2013, when a total of 197 male moths were caught. The spraying was declared a success by the province in the fall.
Committing to our planet’s future means properly recycling our electronics of the past. That’s why the EPRA works to keep over 15 million devices out of Canadian landfills every year through convenient and regulated e-recycling programs. Plus, recovered materials go back into the manufacturing supply chain so that fewer natural resources are required. Find out how to safely and securely recycle your electronics now. Nature’s warranty is counting on it. Learn more about the electronics recycling program at:

This program is funded through Environmental Handling Fees that are applicable to new electronics sold in the province.

ypsy moth spraying caused a flurry of news stories this past spring. Helicopters repeatedly spraying the area with chemicals to kill the pests had residents worried about what it was doing to their health and that of their children’s. Some worried they were being poisoned, and there were news stories about people getting sick, but Fraser Health officials said they had no cases of people in hospital due to spraying. Dr. Lisa Mu, medical health officer for Fraser Health, wrote a report saying the pesticide is known only to affect caterpillars but “as a precautionary measure, we are advising residents to avoid contact with the spray and stay indoors with the windows and doors closed for at least 30 minutes after the spray has been completed.” Helicopters also flew very low to the ground, making for noisy mornings when spraying occurred. ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ forces fight for votes in contentious transit tax plebiscite
he transit tax plebiscite was a hot topic last spring. The question? “Do you support a new 0.5% Metro Vancouver Congestion Improvement Tax, to be dedicated to the Mayors’ Transportation and Transit Plan?” The proposed tax would have paid for a 10-year, $7.5 billion transportation plan for the region that the mayors campaigned hard to garner public approval for. Surrey alone spent $240,000 on the “Yes” campaign, yet Delta spent nothing. Fierce campaigns were unleashed on both sides of the argument. The “Yes” side argued projects are crucial to the region’s future. Without them, roads will be jam packed, costing the region billions of dollars in congestion, they said. The “Yes” side was joined by a plethora of groups from varying sectors including
education, business, industry and more. From the other side of the field the “No” team, led by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, argued the government should be able to fund these projects within the envelope they currently have, that TransLink has a horrific record and shouldn’t be trusted. In a nutshell: no more taxes. When the results were made public in July, nearly two-thirds of Metro Vancouver voters said “No” to the proposed tax. In Surrey, 34 per cent of the city’s 123,370 voters said “Yes” and 66 per cent said “No.” The results were similar in Delta. Jordan Bateman, who led the No TransLink Tax campaign, called the vote a “tremendous victory” for taxpayers. “Our campaign didn’t have millions of taxpayer dollars or fancy CEOs committing their groups
to our cause – we had everyday taxpayers who simply believe TransLink wastes too much of our money to be trusted with any more of it,” said Bateman. Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner was obviously disappointed, as she’d hoped some dollars from the plan would help pay for Surrey’s planned $2.2-billion LRT line that she promised during her campaign in 2014. She says she’s working on a public-private partnership to help fund the line. So what’s to become of the mayors’ $7.5 billion transportation plan that lists Surrey LRT as a priority? During their campaign, federal Liberals promised $2.1 billion for the LRT project, part of a $20-billion commitment to public transportation funding over 10 years.

urrey had so many driveby shootings this year, we at the Now sometimes found ourselves changing the numbers in our stories and editorials as they were being written. At this time of writing, there has been 56 local shootings – the vast number in Surrey, and a couple in North Delta – since the beginning of March. Police staged press conferences to assure residents they were on the case – or cases – as the bullet casings dropped, mostly in Newton. During a press conference in April, police said they believe two groups – one of Somalian decent, the other, South Asian – were responsible for most of the shootings to date. They characterized it as a fight over dial-a-dope turf in North Delta and Surrey.
Police officers at the scene of another call of shots fired. The biggest challenge the police and local politicians clearly faced, and face, is how to get those alleged to have been involved in the shootings, and those who have snubbed police, to co-operate with investigators. Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner and police found themselves struggling to find ways to loosen lips. During a press conference,
Hepner said she would speak with the attorney general about making shooting victims who refuse to co-operate with police pay their own hospital bills. Remarkably, albeit of course tragically, there have been only two drive-by shooting fatalities in Surrey this year – SurreyNewton NDP MLA Harry Bains’ nephew Arun Paul Singh Bains, and Surinderpal Singh
Hehar – were both killed in separate shootings. Police have not connected those shootings to any gang warfare, though, and suspects have yet to be caught. In Newton, one shooting in September happened uncomfortably close to Strawberry Hill elementary, which was hit by bullets as gunmen in one car opened fire on another. A 22-year-old man was shot but survived. It’s remarkable no one else was hit, as the school’s playground is typically busy at that time of day. “It’s outrageous that it’s happening at all,” Surrey school district spokesman Doug Strachan said at the time. The Surrey RCMP has arrested two suspects in that case.

❚ In January, the Now was at Surrey City Hall when Mark “Luke Skywalker” Hamill rehearsed scenes for his appearance in “The Flash” TV series, in an episode that featured a mayoral candidate’s re-election gala. As The Trickster, Hamill’s role was to poison the party-goers. The big atrium of Surrey’s fancy new city hall was a perfect fit for the shoot, said Greg Jackson, the show’s location manager. In 2014, scenes for the series were filmed at Guildford Town Centre, Tynehead Park and at the SFU Surrey/Central City Shopping Centre complex. “Just by fluke, the series is set in a town called Central City, so that was a nice fit working there,” Jackson said of the latter location. In May, zombieshow fans freaked when scenes for the “Fear the Walking Dead” TV show were filmed at the school district building at the corner of 140th Street and 92nd Avenue, which was turned into Sisters of Mercy Hospital for the nighttime shoot. ❚ On the final night of January, local wrestling trailblazer Mark “Gorgeous Michelle Starr” Vellios said his final goodbye to the ring during an emotional “Superbrawl” event at Cloverdale’s Alice McKay Building. ❚ Surrey’s “Concrete Cook” David Jorge earned the title of Canada’s latest “MasterChef ” on the CTV show in May. Jorge told reporters he will bank his $100,000 prize money as he looks to open a restaurant. “I set a goal, showed up in Toronto with 50 people. Seven weeks later I walked out of there myself and it was amazing, absolutely, truly amazing,” enthused Jorge, a father of two who has worked in the concrete business. As Halloween approached, it was announced that Jorge was going to work with the Joseph Richard Group (JRG) on some special projects, including beer-and wine-pairing dinners and menu items. The log cabin-like structure, made of thousands of reference books, was assembled in early October and lasted until early December, becoming a gathering place for those who live in the neighbourhood. At first, city officials were reluctant to approve construction of “Encyclopedia House,” fearing liability issues, but the project eventually materialized and proved to be a real success story. “We heard at the beginning that there would be vandalism, people would just tear it down,” said Perry Fulop, manager of community and recreation Mask-adorned DJ Deadmau5 on stage during the FVDED in the Park music festival, which saw 26,000 ticketholders fill Surrey’s Holland Park in July. A little help is needed to keep cherished Surrey theatre in business calendar and right now I am quite happy with the results of those changes. I made ArtsScene time to audition for, and participate in, Melanie Minty “Calendar Girls,” the first play of the season Columnist for Surrey Little Theatre. I am not OK with that outcome. Replace our community-owned and operated theatre with townhouses? I don’t think so. Sure, build the townhouses if that is what will be OK in that space, but save the theatre first. In January, there are meetings scheduled with the city to discuss the problem and look for solutions. ADAM SVENSSON
Surrey’s Adam Svensson started his professional golf career with a bang last spring, when the Earl Marriott Secondary grad won two straight tournaments on the SwingThought.com Tour, taking top spot in the Killearn CC Classic and also the Lake County Classic. The victories came after a stellar 2014, in which Svensson led his alma mater, Miami’s Barry University, to its second consecutive NCAA Division II championship. “Obviously, my main goal is to be on the PGA Tour, but my short-term goal is to be on the Web.com by next year,” Svensson told the Now in April. Accordingly, on a course in Florida on Dec. 13, he won the Web.com Tour qualifying tourney by seven shots, earning himself $25,000 US and also fully exempt status on the Web. com Tour for the 2016 season – another step for Svensson toward the PGA Tour.

Led by players including allstar guard Armaan Khangura, who played the entire season with a broken bone in his hand, the Fleetwood Park Dragons senior boys team earned the Triple-A high school basketball crown in March. She broke her own Canadian indoor long jump record, and also set the bar for the longest jump in the 25-year history of XL Galan’s women’s competition. As the summer faded, Nettey finished fourth in her event at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

ROADSIDE SAFETY
Say no to drinking & driving this holiday season.
This holiday season we’re asking everyone to share the responsibility of being the designated driver. Is it your turn to get your family and friends home safely? We want you to enjoy the season with your loved ones and have a great time. If your festivities involve alcohol, here are a few tips to help make sure everyone gets home safely: • If you’re hosting a party, show your appreciation to the designated drivers by serving a variety of nonalcoholic drinks. Try getting creative with “mocktails” – great tasting drinks made without alcohol. As a responsible host, make sure your guests have alternatives to get home safely. Call a cab, set money aside for transit or if necessary, let your guests stay overnight. Plan your safe ride home before you start drinking. If you’re going to
drink, choose a designated driver before heading out. If it’s your turn to be the designated driver, be true to your commitment – your friends and family are counting on it. Use other safe alternatives to get home safely: call a taxi, take transit, use a shuttle service or call a sober friend. Another option is Operation Red Nose. From November 30 to December 31, if you’ve been drinking or are too tired to drive home, call 1-877-604-NOSE and a team of three Operation Red Nose volunteers will help make sure you, your passengers and vehicle get home safely.

Your journey starts here.
Fiesta
Surprisingly agile BY DAVID CHAO
The Ford Fiesta enters 2016 as one of the most acclaimed “supermini” cars for its blend of high-tech features, outstanding efficiency and fun-to-drive personality.
5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic and offers a nice blend of power and efficiency.
The subcompact segment is filled with many worthy competitors. A few of the strongest rivals are the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and Kia Rio, to name some.
Those looking for greater fuel economy can choose the optional 1.0-litre 3-cylinder. Using a turbocharger, it achieves better efficiency and slightly more horsepower and torque: 123 hp and 125 lb-ft versus 120 hp and 112 lb-ft on the standard engine. This engine is only available with a 5-speed manual.
To combat them, the 2016 Fiesta receives a few small, but key, updates - the Fiesta is one of the first in Ford’s range that is available with SYNC 3.
The Fiesta ST boasts 60% more hp than the base model, which is shocking in such a small vehicle with a reasonable price tag.
Design
All models, save the performance-focused Fiesta ST, are available in two different body styles. The practical 5-door hatchback is the popular choice, but a traditional 4-door sedan is an option if you prefer something more conservative. The hatchback models offer more cargo space and its proportions are pleasing to the eye; in particular, the Fiesta ST has a fantastic design that garners plenty of attention. Regardless of the body style, the Fiesta is stylish and distinctive. Sharp lines are visible from all angles and its standout feature is the large grille. Note: the thick C-pillars do create a sizable blindspot. Bright colours reflect the Fiesta’s fun-loving personality. New for 2016 is the SE Black Package that comes with unique 16inch wheels, black trim and black mirror housings. While the Fiesta is Ford’s entry-level model, that fact is not immediately apparent inside the cabin. Use of hard plastic is limited and the soft-touch dash is especially plush, making the car appear more upscale.
Performance
The Ford Fiesta is available with three engines, each with a distinctly different character. The majority of buyers will likely opt for the standard 1.6-litre 4-cylinder. This motor is available with either a
The turbocharged 1.6-litre inline-4 produces 197 hp and 202 lb-ft of torque. While those are not out-of-this-world numbers, the Fiesta’s light weight and the engine’s instant response feel bring a true fun driving experience. Its 6-speed manual is quick and direct too. Considering the price point, the standard Fiesta already has excellent handling. But, the ST takes it to a whole new level. Major upgrades to the suspension, brakes and steering mean that the Fiesta ST handles like a go-kart and torque Vectoring Control nearly eliminates understeer. Overall, the Fiesta ST feels very balanced and neutral for a front-wheel drive car and has very little body roll. Even in base trim, the Fiesta’s quick and direct steering means it’s willing to play, but the ride is comfortable and little engine and road noise enters the cabin so long trips are not tiresome.
Environment
The interior design is as bold as the exterior. The sweeping dash is dominated by the central display screen and mobile phone-inspired button layout. The base model does feel a bit spartan, but as you move up the range you are treated to leather seats, contrasting seat piping, ambient lighting and push-button start. Five passenger seating is adequate in both sedan and hatchback models. However, it should come as no surprise that the rear seat is cramped in the subcompact Fiesta.
Entry into the back is easier with the hatchback because its openings are wider. Also, once inside, the sedan’s sloping roof slightly reduces headroom. There are many useful storage spaces found throughout the cabin; front door pockets are a decent size, the glove box is large and there are various other handy cubbies for smaller items. The deep centre storage doubles as an armrest for the driver and front passenger. The hatchback also has a much larger cargo capacity than the sedan version. To start, the wider opening eases access to the 423-litres in the hatch, over the 362.5-litres in the sedan. To further extend its advantage, the rear seats can fold 60/40 to create 720-litres of maximum volume. Regardless of the version of Fiesta you choose, it has an excellent driving position. The seat and steering wheel have plenty of adjustment, plus forward visibility is great. One interesting advanced feature is the MyKey system. This allows owners to set parameters on top speed and audio volume - an excellent idea if the Fiesta will be used by novice drivers.
Features
Starting prices for the Ford Fiesta range from $15,399 to $24,999. Standard equipment includes cloth seats, air conditioning, manual windows, power door locks, and an AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 capability. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include an alarm system, SiriusXM satellite radio, leathertrimmed and heated front seats, voice-activated SYNC 3, and a Sony audio system. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for 1.6-litre models with the manual transmission are 8.5 city, 6.5 highway and 7.6 combined. Automatic models return very similar numbers with 8.7 city, 6.4 highway and 7.5 combined. 1.0-litre models see 7.5 city, 5.5 highway and 6.6 combined, while the 1.6 turbo is rated at 9.0 city, 7.1 7369566 highway and 8.1 combined.
