Celebrating a milestone birthday Ray Swain has done a lot in his 101 years, more than half his life spent in Maple Ridge.

“Get the fire extinguisher ready,” someone joked as Ray Swain was about the blow out the candles at his 101st birthday celebration Dec. 23 inside the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society building’s snooker room.

Swain’s actual birthday date is Dec. 26, Boxing Day, but his snooker-playing pals decided to hold a birthday bash, complete with a card, finger food, and a cake, in his honour three days prior.

Swain has a long history with Maple Ridge, having moved to the community in 1957, when he became co-owner of the Haney Hotel.

“We bought it in ’57 and sold it in 1967… 10 years later,” Swain said.

After the hotel changed hands, Swain told the TIMES that took a holiday for 11 months, touring Canada and the U.S. – including Florida – before returning to Maple Ridge.

Swain, was born in Central Butte, Sask., on Dec. 26, 1914.

A veteran who served in Europe during the Second World War with the South Alberta Regiment – based out of Medicine Hat, Alta. – Swain has lived in Maple Ridge for more than half of his life.

“I was a commander,” Swain said of his war years. “I served three-and-a-half years.”

Swain built a number of new homes in Maple Ridge and lived in the same house for 52 years, his friend and longtime neighbour Ron Antalek told the TIMES in February [Centenarian celebrated, Feb. 15, 2014, Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES].

He lived alone in that house until last year, when he moved to a care home.

His wife Joan died from cancer many years ago, Antalek shared, adding that Swain has been a member of Maple Ridge Curling Club since 1956, was a member of the Pitt Meadows Golf Course, and owned the Fraser River Marina on Wharf Street with 46 boat berths.

Around the time he was born, Swain’s family owned a hardware store on Central Butte’s main street.

He also owned and operated Swain Construction, Swain noted during his birthday party on Dec. 23.

These days, Swain, who has suffered three strokes, is a snooker fan but isn’t able to play.

“I come every day [to the snooker room at the seniors centre] if it doesn’t rain, just to watch,” Swain said. “If it wasn’t for this group I don’t know what I’d do.”

This year, the hamper helped 497 registered families have a brighter Christmas, in part thanks to the Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe and the Good Neighbour Program.

New crosswalk lights on Harris Road.

Maple Ridge Councillor Gordy Robson also expressed his frustration with the decision.

“That’s very disappointing,” Robson said of Coleman’s statment. “Their contract is up in 2017 and I would be very offended if it was renewed with the current management and attitude in place.”

In August, Read said the Caring Place – which is supposed to serve as a temporary shelter for people who suddenly find themselves with no housing and need to be redirected – has “people… cycling in and out” on an ongoing basis.

“Why are we paying for that?” Read asked.

“We need it to work effectively as intended, or we need to find another option.”

Homelessness was top of mind throughout the year in Maple Ridge, but especially in the summer with the existence of a tent city along Cliff Avenue.

At its peak, the camp had 35 tents, and roughly 65 homeless people camping along Cliff Avenue.

The camp was plagued with fights, garbage, and alleged drug use, and was a huge disruption to the lives of Cliff Avenue

On Oct. 1, a temporary 40-bed facility, operated by RainCity Housing opened at the former Sleep Shop location at 22239 Lougheed Hwy. City staff later delivered a “Notice to Cease Camping on the Highway” to all campers. The camp is now gone, with a fence narrowing the street as a strategy to keep any more tents from popping up once the temporary shelter closes on March 31.

Homelessness dominated the headlines in Maple Ridge in 2015, and the issue took a new turn just days before the calendar flips over to the new year.

The Salvation Army Ridge Meadows’ shelter will remain status quo in 2016.

Maple Ridge council passed a resolution in August, asking BC Housing to end its contract with the Salvation Army Caring Place.

Four months later, the province provided its answer.

In a Dec. 22 letter, B.C.’s deputy premier and minister responsible for housing Rich Coleman informed Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and council that the local Salvation Army is “meeting the obligations of its operating agreement with the province and providing a much needed and valued service to the community of Maple Ridge.”

Coleman noted that, as requested by the City of Maple Ridge, the province assessed the emergency shelter capacity and supportive housing services provided by the

Salvation Army Ridge Meadows.

He added that the province is “pleased with and remain committed to this partnership, and will continue to work with the Caring Place to ensure it is fully accessible and meets the needs of an ever-more complex population of homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Maple Ridge and throughout British Columbia.”

According to Patricia Cuff with the Salvation Army, out of the 354 people who stayed in the Caring Place shelter from January to October, 43 per cent were placed in permanent housing and 22 per cent are in treatment for a total success rate of 65 per cent.

Despite this, Read said the City’s position remains unchanged.

“It was our resources, on the ground, every day in the [Cliff Avenue] camp, and we feel the best positioned to critically assess the holistic needs of our community,” Read elaborated.

The mayor added that first thing in the new year, council will be discussing the next steps and staff is preparing for the next meeting with BC Housing.

“The holidays have not slowed us down,” Read said.

2015: Just another year?

T

he year 2015 is almost in the rear view mirror now, with just a day or two trickling away before we tack up the new calendar.

It’s easy enough to pick out some of the major events that took place. In the Lower Mainland, the TransLink referendum went down to a crushing defeat. Those of us out in the suburbs saw a few thousand more people move out here even as house prices heated up some more. We saw protests over the proposed doubling of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

The biggest story of the year for Canada was undoubtedly the federal election that saw the Conservatives swept out and the Liberals in.

It’s easy to say with hindsight that the Conservative government had used up its goodwill with a majority of voters – but up until just before the election, it all seemed very much up in the air.

Internationally, ISIS grabbed headlines and territory and incited even more outrage when they took credit for a vicious attack on civilians in Paris. Donald Trump continued to dominate the contest to become the Republican presidential candidate. Solar panels are spreading, but Volkswagen turned out to be a lot less green than they had pretended to be.

It’s hard to say which of these stories will be considered important in the future, whether 10 years or 100.

The truth is, 2015 isn’t finished yet. A lot of balls are still in the air, many dice were tossed and are still tumbling.

We don’t know whether Justin Trudeau will be a good prime minister or not. We don’t know whether the future will think Stephen Harper was a good PM or not.

We don’t know if Trump will be a president or be scrubbed, we don’t know if ISIS will threaten the west or crumble, we don’t know if the temperature will keep going up along with house prices or if we can finally stabilize both of them.

Here’s hoping we all get to see the outcome, from a nice safe vantage point about 10 years from now.

And it was on the edge of not big enough.

I potted the sucker anyway, and hauled it out of the supermarket and tucked it away in the freezer.

The old stress started to creep in, masking the fact that we still had a good week and a half left to bag a more suitable candidate for the Christmas oven.

And of course, we found another. A perfect bird, indeed. Which left us with a spare – and still no apologies for the mouse. ’Twas three nights before Christmas when all through our home, an ominous sound arrived through our phone. The Lad had pulled an all-nighter programming computers, and had caught “whatever is going around.” He was still going to try to make it for dinner, but...

Then on Christmas Eve, with a visit to extended family looming on the agenda, one of the dogs wouldn’t stop puking all over the house. His uncharacteristically

quiet demeanour, coupled with his refusal to eat – and he had refused liquid sustenance for two full days now – meant a trip (an unscheduled trip!) to the vet.

And the kids, flying back from Mexico to join us for Christmas, reported they were snowed-in in Calgary.

Our scheduled oysters-and-kippers breakfast turned to brunch, and eventually became a catch-as-catch-can afternoon snack, an oyster here, a kipper here, as the clan slowly – but inexorably – gathered.

Other than everyone’s healthy albeit haphazard arrival, not a single plan panned out in the end. And wouldn’t you know it? It was the best Christmas ever!

Chaos is just a natural part of Christmas at our house. No amount of “best laid schemes” will get us around that.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The mouse be damned.

The only really scary part is... New Year’s is usually even worse!

During a move before Christmas, Michael and Norma Gail Hickey accidentally donated a box full of very special, irreplaceable family Christmas ornaments

to the Bibles For Missions thrift store in Maple Ridge.

The items were sold and the couple had hoped shoppers who bought them might bring them back.

A Maple Ridge couple hopes their voices will be heard by the federal government.

They took a mammoth step in getting their message of fairness and equality for adoptive parents across to the Canadian Liberals when Candice Jones had a brief, face-to-face meeting

with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Dec. 17 at Global TV in Vancouver.

Candice and husband Kevin hope to be first-time parents when they adopt one or two Haiti children.

The couple chose to adopt from Haiti for numerous reasons but after the country was struck by a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010, Candice said, “we knew this was the country we wanted to adopt from.”

“The circumstances that these children are in is just heartbreaking. We believe every child deserves a

home and a family, no matter what country they are from… No child should be deprived of love.”

The process is arduous, however, and Kevin and Candice are waiting for a match from the Haitian government authority.

In a letter she was able to slip to Trudeau, Candice wrote, “we are two years into the process and are still waiting.”

She noted the adoption tax credit Canada currently offers is non-refundable and has a maximum of $15,000, but the average international adoption

costs $40,000 to $50,000 for one child.

“During the election Harper had promised to raise the adoption tax credit and make it refundable so that it’s more in line with the cost of an adoption,” Candice wrote.

As well, they’ve asked for equal parental leave for adoptive parents.

She didn’t have time to ask Trudeau the questions in person, but did give him a copy of her questions and asked him to “please read it later.”

“Our judges toured the area, marvelled at the beautiful window displays, and after much deliberation, selected four winners

“The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association is happy to reward businesses for brightening up the downtown streets in December,” said Zazulak.

Maple Ridge native shares CFL memories

Ross Clarkson is the latest Hometown Hero.

The CFL of the 1950s and ’60s, was “a little more legendary and folksy than it is today,” remarked Ross Clarkson.

The 63-year-old Maple Ridge native, who is currently a contract English professor at the University of Ottawa, grew up in that era, before spending seven years in the league, where he played for the BC Lions, the now-defunct Ottawa Rough Riders, and the Hamilton Tigercats.

For Clarkson, the opportunity to play in the national league was a combination of timing, skill, and luck.

“When I was hitting about nine or 10 years

old, they started the minor football bantam, peewee leagues in Maple Ridge,” he recalled.

“Then, as I got be in bantam, they started the football program at Maple Ridge High.”

During this time, he said, there “was a real transition that happened from football being a game to it being sort of an Americanstyle bootcamp.”

Essentially, what this meant was that during tryouts, practices and training, players were put through more difficult physical regiments “than you have ever experienced in your life... to the point that either you cross the threshold, or just decide the game isn’t for you.”

“I was kind of lucky as a football player,” he said.

“I got a scholarship from Maple Ridge High to go play for SFU, so I just kind of hit it at the right time.”

And a knack for the game ran in his family.

“My uncle was actually a player in the CFL, too.

He was a running back for Edmonton, who got traded to Calgary,” Clarkson explained.

But he was never forced

to choose the same path, in fact, quite the opposite.

“In those days, parents didn’t really push their kids like they do today,” he elaborated.

In fact, football wasn’t even Clarkson’s first choice.

“I actually liked basketball more and to me, it was more fun,” he admitted. “But football is what I was good at.”

Not that he didn’t have talent on the court though.

“When I went to SFU, they said I could play basketball too, just not on the scholarship, but it was a little much to do both.”

Clarkson played in the CFL from 1973 to 1980, catching a total of 158 passes for 2,402 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns.

His foray into teaching, began in his mid-40s He made the decision to go back to school, after spending some time working in the reforestation

business in B.C. “When my [football] career ended, it kind of caught up with me, and I wasn’t all that skilled in the ‘9 to 5 – so to speak,” he said.

“The great thing about football is it really does make you mentally tougher, which I really appreciate.”

That mental toughness “helped me make the decision to go back to school.”

Clarkson returned to school,, worked his way to a PhD, and master’s degree in English, “and got it about eight or nine years ago.”

He recently found an old photo of himself in football gear. “I look about 10 or 11,” he said.

Reflecting on where he’s come from since that photo was taken, and the path of his career and life thus far, Clarkson was succinct: “It’s all worked out pretty good for me.”
