Single parents are getting help to get back in workforce

By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government’s new training and employment program for single parents has enrolled more than 1,300 people since it

Urban deer translocation trial set to begin this winter

Elkford, Cranbrook, Kimberley and Invermere are going to be trying to translocate urban deer into range areas outside of the communities.

After extensive planning and discussions, a trial project to translocate urban mule deer from four communities in the East Kootenay will begin later this winter. Mule deer will be live-captured in Elkford, Cranbrook, Kimberley and Invermere, and transported to winter range areas in the East Kootenay where natural non-urban mule deer populations have been in decline for several years.

“For several years now, communities in this region affected by large urban deer populations have been seeking additional tools to deal with the problem. We are excited to be a partner in this trial, which we see as a promising step forward,” said City of Cranbrook’s Corporate Communications Officer, Chris Zettel.

This trial project, which has received wide-spread support, is a response to the desire of many to find a nonlethal option to reduce urban deer populations.

While the hope is that translocation will prove to be a reliable management tool, the current project is designed to scientifically test if translocation of urban deer is humane and effective. Humane treatment of deer is the primary focus throughout the process.

“The issues associated with urban deer are not going to go away” stated Mayor Don McCor-

mick. “Municipalities have limited options for dealing with these issues, and translocation seems to be one option that is supported by all interest groups. If successful, translocation will offer far more flexibility than a cull and be a welcome addition to our toolkit.”

“The objective of this project is to test how urban mule deer respond once they’ve been moved to natural environments,” said lead project biologist Ian Adams of Cranbrookbased VAST Resource Solutions. “For the project to prove successful, translocated deer must not return to either their home community or any other urban area. From the outset we’ve been clear that deer moved from one community are not to become a nuisance elsewhere.”

Another question is how deer cope with predators. “A concern of many is that urban deer have become naïve to predators,” said Adams.

“These are animals that are now accustomed to staring down perceived threats from people and pets, particularly dogs.

Whether deer retain some innate memory of predators can only be tested by moving deer from urban areas to natural areas.”

In order to track their movement and survival, twenty of the translocated deer will be fitted with GPS radio collars.

The collars are programmed to connect with Global Positioning System satellites, just like a GPS unit used by geocachers or the dashboard of a vehicle. Up

to two locations of the deer are sent daily to biologists to track their movements. A collar will also send out notification if it doesn’t move for eight hours.

Biologists will then track it down as soon as possible to determine if the deer has died and, if so, establish cause of death. All deer will have visible ear tags to identify them as translocated urban mule deer.

“The timing of this trial project is great,” said Adams. “B.C. provincial biologists are currently running a similar project on non-urban mule deer, using the same GPS collar technology. We’ll be able to compare movement and survival of translocated urban deer with natural mule deer in the same areas at the same time.

It’s an ideal scientific control.”

The communities involved are pleased to have the trial proceed and the opportunity to be involved. Partnerships and cooperation are key to the project’s success. Canada, which has been forthright in their opposition to culling, supports the project and has contributed financially to its implementation.

Local wildlife conservation clubs are important partners and strong supporters of the project, volunteering their efforts to help implement the translocation.

This project is funded, in part, through the Upper Kootenay Ecosystem Enhancement Plan (UKEEP), which is a partnership between the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) and Colum-

bia Basin Trust (CBT).

Significant additional financial support has been provided by all project partners.

Partners include: District of Elkford, City of Kimberley, City of Cranbrook, District of Invermere, Animal Alliance of Canada, B.C. Ministry of Forest, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, Columbia Basin Trust, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers of British Columbia and local Rod and Gun Clubs.

Remembering 2015: another remarkable year February

Carrying on with a tradition of local athletes doing well, Colin Ferrie, of Kimberley, won a gold medal in the 1.5 kilometre classic sprint at the Canada Winter Games.

In mid-March, the city reeled from Target closing its doors at the Tamarack Centre. Around 150 employees had to find work elsewhere. In total, Target closed down all of its 133 stores in the country, leaving more than 17,000 people out of work.

The Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Business Excellence Awards were the talk of the town in April. Just Liquid Sports, owned by Rob Porter (above), took home the awards in the Hospitality and Tourism, Retailer Excellence, and Business of the Year 1-15 employees categories.

Kimberley received a new attraction to its Platzl in May. Artists Tony and Twila Austin unveiled their latest sculpture, ‘The Sullivan Mine Commemorative.’

“Twila and I believe public art is essential. It nurtures both the viewer and the artist and helps create a tangible sense of place,” said Tony.

The work is life-sized and dominates the end of the Platzl just in front of the Kimberley Library.

This year’s Sam Steele Days Parade could possibly have been the best ever. Besides plenty of local talent and floats, there were a number of award-winning entries from other parts of Canada and the U.S. vying for the attention of the crowd that filled the parade route up to four deep.

New board chair appointed to Columbia Basin Trust

Rick Jensen has recently been appointed to Chair of Columbia Basin Trust.

Columbia Basin Trust announces several updates to its Board of Directors, including the appointment of Rick Jensen as Chair and the retirement of current Chair Greg Deck.

From Cranbrook, Jensen is replacing Deck as Chair as of January 1, 2016. He joined the Trust Board in 2013 and served as Vice-Chair in 2015.

He is the Chair of New Dawn Developments, a director of

New Dawn Restorations, President of the Canadian Institute of Excellence and a director of Columbia Power Corporation.

He has also served as President and CEO of Panorama Mountain Village.

The Trust also thanks and extends its best wishes to Greg Deck, who is now retiring. From Radium Hot Springs, Deck has been on the Board since the Trust’s inception in 1995, serv-

ing as Vice-Chair from 2008 to 2012 and Chair from 2013 to 2015.

“On behalf of the Trust’s Board and staff, I would like to thank Greg Deck for his contributions to the formation and growth of the Trust,” said Jensen. “For over 20 years, he has been an instrumental part of this organization and has dedicated his efforts to the well-being of our region and its residents.”

Nakusp’s Laurie Page, who joined the Board in January 2012, is being reappointed until December 2018 and is taking over as Vice-Chair.

She also served as Vice-Chair from 2013 to 2014.

“The Trust has achieved remarkable success, and I’m confident Rick Jensen, Laurie Page and the rest of the Board will carry this success forward,” said Deck.

“This is a solid team committed to an extraordinary organization that will continue to serve the Basin well.”

The Trust also wishes the best to Kim Deane of Rossland.

He has been on the Board since 2009, and is retiring as of the end of 2015.

Two new members are joining the Board for one-year terms, expiring December 2016. Michael Delich joins the Board from Fernie, where he is an active entrepreneur, community leader and sport leader.

Rhonda Ruston joins the Board from Kaslo, where she is a lawyer and has served on the boards of the Kaslo InfoNet Society and Kaslo Institute.

Nelson’s Am Naqvi is being reappointed to the Board until December 2018. Other Board members include Larry Binks (Creston), Wendy Booth (Fairmont Hot Springs), Gord DeRosa (Trail), John Dooley (Nelson), Loni Parker (Revelstoke), Vickie Thomas (?aq’am) and Jeannette Townsend (Valemount).

Kimberley athlete chosen for Youth Olympic Games Alpine Canada Alpin is excited to announce 17-year-old Reece Howden from Chilliwack, B.C. and 17-year-old Zoe Chore from Kimberley, B.C., will be representing Canada at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in ski cross.

“We had 15 athletes trying out in Sun Peaks, BC for the two Canadian spots for athletes competing in ski cross at the YOG,” said Ski Cross Athletic Director, Willy Raine, of the selection process. “The

skill level these two athletes demonstrated was very strong and Canada will be very well represented with Reece and Zoe.” Chore credits her coach Jon Blair, program director for the Kimberley Alpine Team, for the technical training but more his passion for skiing that has helped her get where she is. She also credits India Sherret, also from Cranbrook as her inspiration and for introducing her to the sport. India Sherret was

the last Canadian athlete to attend YOG for ski cross and then went on to win World Juniors earlier this year.

This year’s Youth Olympic Games takes place February 12-22, 2016 in Lillehammer, Norway. The YOG will give younger athletes the opportunity to learn about high performance sport, meet Olympic champions and role models who will share their experiences with athletes.

Overall: Chevy’s second-generation compact is larger, lighter and sleeker. And if you choose, it can also be made more secure with the latest in active safety systems; a hatchback version will follow later.

Drivetrain: A new turbocharged four-cylinder engine is rated at 153 horsepower; former non-turbo base and optional turbo-diesel four-cylinders are gone; six-speed manual and automatic transmissions carry over.

When viewing the spec sheets of General Motors’s four other 2016 new models, it’s apparent that weight reduction has been a

principal objective in their development. That includes the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze that has tightened its belt to the tune of nearly 115 kilograms. That includes a 20-kilo reduction in engine weight from switching to aluminum from cast iron for the engine block and an 11-kilogram-lighter automatic transmission. The car’s basic architecture and suspension components have also slimed down. The Cruze’s sheetmetal is now among the more elegant in a compact-sedan class that includes some heavy hitters from Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru. The interior is also

roomier, especially the rear seat that adults won’t view as a penalty box. The rest of the cabin has extra soft-touch material covering the dashboard, door panels and floor console. Cranbrook resident Marianne Reinders will once again be challenging four peaks in four days to raise funds for children to get a Jumpstart in sports.

Canadian Tire believes that all kids should have the opportunity to play. However, the reality is that one in three Canadian families cannot afford to enrol their children in sport or recreation activities.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® was created to help give kids a sporting chance. The charitable program helps underprivileged kids

aged 4 to 18 participate in organized sport and recreation by covering the costs of registration, equipment and/or transportation.

With the first wave of Syrian refugees beginning to arrive in Canada, the co-chair of the Cranbrook Hub for Refugees (CHR) said he looks forward to the day when the first refugee family arrives in Cranbrook.

But that happy day is likely a few months away and the family that arrives will not necessarily be Syrian, said Gerry Warner.

“CHR’s position from the beginning is that we would welcome any refugee family that has been screened by UNHCR (United Nations High Commission on Refugees) and IRCC (Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada) because no matter where the refugees come from their desperate lives will be vastly improved by coming to Canada.”

Warner said Cranbrook residents are already responding generously to the plight of the refugees with close to $6,000 donated so far towards the $15,000 needed for CHR’s sponsorship agreement to be approved by the IRCC. “Anyone wanting to donate now can write a cheque to Christ Church Anglican indicating it goes to the CHR account and drop

it off at 46 – 13th Avenue South near downtown during church office hours Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to noon except for Wednesday,” Warner said.

By doing that, people will have made a muchappreciated contribution for the Christmas season and also earn themselves a charitable tax receipt for the 2015 taxation year, he said.

The Anglican Church Diocese of Kootenay is an official Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH) with IRCC which allows CHR the right to sponsor refugees as a constituent group of the church.

Refugees arriving from Syria are a mix of government-assisted refugees (GARs), privately sponsored refugees (PSRs), and blended visa office-referred refugees (BVORs).

CHR will be getting refugees from the BVOR stream, but few of these have arrived in Canada yet, said Rev. Elizabeth Huether of St. David’s Church in Castlegar, Diocese of Kootenay Refugee Coordinator.

Huether said most of the Syrian refugees that have arrived so far are privately sponsored refugees by different groups and organizations with the BVOR’s not expected to arrive in significant numbers until at least March. “So let us all take a deep breath and do our due diligence to be ready and hospitable to the strangers whenever they may come to be with us.”

CHR Co-Chair Bonnie Spence-Vinge said CHR is doing everything it can to prepare for the refugees’ arrival and has scheduled a public meeting 7 p.m., Jan. 6 at Christ Church to update the community on its plans and to get local volunteers involved in preparing for when the refugees arrive.

Spence-Vinge said the Jan. 6 meeting will outline settlement plan tasks to be filled by volunteers. The Settlement Plan will provide a framework for working through the details of who will do what with the resources and where the resources will come from, she said.

“We will need to develop our cultural awareness skills and learn about our rights and responsibilities as a sponsoring group to prepare the community of Cranbrook for the refugee’s arrival,” she said.

David Maxwell Brown 1959 - 2015 It is with great sadness that the family of David Maxwell Brown “Dave” announce his sudden passing on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at the age of 56. Dave was born May 25, 1959 in Richmond, BC to Reginald and Beryl Brown.

Dave is survived by the love of his life his wife Kathy Brown, his brother Neil (Ardell) Brown and his uncle Alex Robertson. In addition, his step children Richard Monsen, Missy Monsen, Becky (Skyler) Ferris and their grandchildren Gavin, Hailey, Jagur, Jaydlyn, Landon and Kylie and numerous extended family.

Dave was a devoted and loving husband, step-father, brother and friend. He loved spending time with his family camping especially in Jasper, AB. He also enjoyed fly fishing and being with his furry companion Rupert. Dave spent a lot of his time on the road whether it was a weekend trip with his wife or for work. Dave was a wonderful conversationalist and his family was constantly entertained and impressed with his recall of facts and trivia.

He was a gifted photographer who had a talent for capturing subtle nuances in profiles and landscapes and received numerous awards for his photographs. Dave had many interests including aviation especially war aircrafts and CB radio. He enjoyed the game of golf and loved getting out on the greens as much as he could with his brother-in-law Rick and his son-in-law Skyler.

A memorial service for Dave will be held at a later date.

His stories and wit will forever be treasured and missed by all.

Denise Julien 1946 – 2015 Denise Marie Therese Francoise, born on October 20, 1946 in Matane, Quebec, passed away peacefully in Cranbrook, BC on Thursday, December 17, 2015 with her loving husband and son by her side, after losing her short fight with cancer.

Denise was loving and caring and had a charismatic personality and an infectious laugh which made it easy to be comfortable around her.

She worked at various jobs, some of which included being a store detective, a Sherriff, and a dispatcher with CP Rail - which she had recently retired from.

Denise enjoyed socializing with friends and was an avid reader. She had a passion for curling and she was involved for many years with various curling associations. She coached curling and she was a very skilled and competitive player of the game. Denise was never afraid and was always willing to try a new adventure. She loved going on holidays, as told by her many trips to Cuba.

She complained very little, but when she did and got mad, her favorite saying was “I’m going to write a letter”, which of course never was written.

Denise is survived by her husband Walter Schmidt, son Kristopher (Rita), mother Madeleine, brother Daniel (Sandra), sister Renee, granddaughter Kelsey, grandson Parker, nephew Robert (Kelly), niece Kim (Frank), greatnieces Venesa and Caprice and numerous extended family members and friends.

Denise will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

At Denise’s request, only a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 – 9th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC, V1C 2L9.

OBITUARY

Raymond Lawry Osborne “Joe” September 4, 1954 – December 5, 2015 Joe joined the Royal Canadian Navy following high school.

He proudly served for 25 years and retired as Petty Officer First Class.

Joe was predeceased by his father Richard Osborne, mother Florence Osborne, and his sister Joyce Gore. He is survived by his brother Dennis (Shirley) Osborne, his sister Bettey Osborne and many relatives. Also left to mourn his passing are his special friend Joan Greggain and her sons Rory, Darian, Braden, and Colton (fondly called “Bear” by Joe) and his dog Haida with whom he spent countless happy hours camping, fishing, hiking, and skiing.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date.

Cherrill Holden 1942 – 2015 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Cherrill Holden announces her passing on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at her home in Skookumchuck with her loving family at her side.

Cherrill was born on November 16, 1942.

She enjoyed raising sheep and spun her own wool for her knitting projects. She liked hiking, camping and loved gardening. She also enjoyed making beautiful Birthday and Anniversary cards for family and close friends.

Cherrill is survived by her loving husband Barrie of 54 years, her daughter Rae Tutor (special friend Robin) and Rae's children, Kimberley (Scott) Eklund, Laura (Justin) Greffard, and Trent Tutor all from Saskatchewan; her son Dan and his daughter Katy of Ta Ta Creek; her great grandchildren Liam Eklund, Jeane and Shae-Lynn Greffard; her sister Shirley (Tony) Eeglon of Calgary; brother Dave (Louanne) Sanderson of Kimberley; and her sister Judy Pelletier of Penticton; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Holiday Recycling

Recycling Basics

Batteries

One of the items people seem to stock up on at this time of year is batteries.

Both alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable.

The drop off locations in the Cranbrook/Kimberley area are:

Wrapping Paper - all paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in the yellow bins or Invermere’s blue bag program.

Foil based papers cannot be recycled and should be thrown in the garbage if they can’t be saved and reused. Please consider paper based paper when purchasing gift wrap.

Ribbons & Bows - cannot be recycled. They can be saved and reused. If they can no longer be reused, they go in the garbage.

Aluminum Pie Plates & Roasters - both aluminum pie plates and roasters can be recycled at the Cranbrook Bottle Depot.

Cardboard Boxes - all cardboard and boxboard (like cracker and cereal boxes) are recyclable. Please flatten them to conserve space in the bin.

Tin Cans - all tin food and beverage cans can be recycled. They must be rinsed out. Labels can be left on if they are difficult to remove.

Styrofoam - Even though Styrofoam is marked with a #6, it is NOT recyclable in our program. Styrofoam can be recycled at the Cranbrook Bottle Depot.

Plastics - all plastics with the triangular recycling symbol and the number between 1 and 6 (except Styrofoam) can be recycled in the yellow bins. They must be clean and every piece of plastic must be numbered.

Plastics Not Accepted: • #7 plastics, dirty plastics, plastics with no number. They go in the garbage if they can’t be reused.

Glass Glass goes in the yellow bins marked GLASS ONLY. The ONLY glass accepted is container glass. That means jam jars, salsa jars, wine bottles, olive oil bottles, etc.

NO other glass (including dishes or drinking glasses) is accepted. If in doubt, please leave it out.

On December 25th alone, over 30 million bags of garbage will be thrown out of Canadian households.
