After nine years in government, MP aims to bring ‘constructive’ approach to critic’s role Abbotsford News

After nine years sitting in the government’s ranks in the House of Commons, it has taken Abbotsford MP Ed Fast some time to get used to life in opposition.

The big changes are obvious. Making the shift from flying around the world as Minister of International Trade to Opposition critic for Environment and Climate Change has seen Fast turn his focus to a new, and very complex, topic. And he’s no longer leading a federal ministry or involved in the final steps of the Trans-Pacific Partnership that he helped negotiate.

But there have also been smaller changes that have nevertheless produced hurdles, Fast said in a wide-ranging conversation last week with The News Take the layout of Parliament. Not only are the Conservatives now sitting on the opposite side of the House of Commons, a situation Fast

Fast said he’ll be pushing for the Liberals to strike an “appropriate balance” between protecting both the environment and the interests of the Canadian

economy.

“Those are not mutually exclusive goals, but they require a lot of care to get that balance right,” he said.

Fast said the landmark agreement struck at the end of COP21 was a positive move in the right direction to address climate change.

The agreement will see 196 countries adopt emission targets, as

well as the requirement that they publicly report their progress.

Fast noted that the Canadian targets had originally been set by the Conservatives. But he also took the opportunity to criticize Canada’s large delegation at COP21.

Asked what he hopes the next four years will hold for him in opposition, Fast said, “I think

at the end of the four years, I hope I would have been a constructive voice as Canada moves forward in promoting and protecting our environmental interests.”

Personally, he said he’s looking forward to family time with his children and grandchildren that just wasn’t available when he was a governmental minister.

When in his riding, Sidhu will work out of a main office in Mission – “only 10 minutes” from the Abbotsford portion of his riding in Matsqui, he says – and host regular meetings with Fraser Canyon constituents in Lillooet.

The schedule of being in government has been exhausting for him so far, he says, with 12-hour days and mandatory events after hours.

“It’s funny. Mrs. Sidhu made a comment when she was in Ottawa. She said, ‘Seems like this is your full-time job.’ And I laughed and said, ‘Yeah, not even full-time. I’m working overtime.’ ” But despite the pace, he’s overjoyed to have won the position to represent his community.

“I love it,” he said. “Anything I can do to improve the lives of Canadians in my part of the woods, I’ll do that.”

Passages of 2015: Stephen Harper Tom

B.C. Views I first met Stephen Harper when he was running for the Canadian Alliance leadership in 2002.

Speaking to a group of Fraser Valley members concerned that the party had split over the leadership of Stockwell Day, Harper didn’t mince words because a local reporter had showed up on a Saturday morning. He explained his prediction that no matter who leads the conservative movement started by Preston Manning, the national media would work against it.

“The press is owned by big-L liberals and staffed by small-L liberals,” Harper said.

“Preston was too cerebral; Stock was not cerebral enough. I’m not sure where I will be, but the media will always be on the other side.”

Harper’s cold war with national media is a theme that runs through his decade as prime minister, peaking in 2015 with the most slanted election coverage I’ve ever witnessed. The celebration continues over Justin Trudeau’s victory, with the supposedly non-partisan federal bureaucracy cheering along with much of the national media.

Harper’s assessment of major newspaper ownership is no longer accurate, except for the Toronto Star. But the dying tradition of owners looking up from their accounting ledgers to endorse a political party continued, with the Postmedia chain and the Globe and Mail pointing out that Trudeau’s rash promises didn’t add up.

Endorsements were a brief interruption in the media assault on Harper’s record.

His government’s plan to welcome 10,000 refugees, unveiled way back in January 2015, was portrayed as heartless and feeble, while Trudeau’s 25,000 by Christmas represented the generous character of the true Canada.

As it turns out, the Liberals have been hard pressed to reach even the 10,000 mark. But they’ve put out a rash new promise to make

it 50,000 at some point in the future, so the media’s new-found message of sunshine, hope and change continues.

Those modest $10 billion annual deficits that Trudeau promised, and Harper warned against? Borrowing and spending will far exceed that, but we’re assured that’s because they were based on inflated Conservative financial forecasts.

In fact, independent private sector forecasts are now the key reference for government budgets at the federal and provincial level. None of them predicted the further slump in energy prices that continued through 2015.

And cooking the books before an election isn’t really possible any more, thanks to the establishment of the Parliamentary Budget Office. That was a Harper innovation, along with scheduled elections.

And that Trudeau pledge to raise taxes on the wealthiest Canadians and use the proceeds to finance a tax cut for the middle class? That one didn’t add up either. For one thing, wealthy people have a variety of legal ways to reduce their taxable income.

Here’s an actual front-page headline from the Globe and Mail, reporting this unfortunate fact, well after the election: “The way Liberals gauged response to new tax rate explains gap.” So it was just an understandable oversight, you see.

Trudeau’s star turn in Paris, where he pronounced that “Canada is back” in the battle to control the world’s weather? The official submission from his bloated delegation to the UN climate meetings was actually the existing Conservative plan, which includes phasing out coal-fired electricity generation.

Harper generally represented a preference for the individual over the state, a concept that at one time was known as “liberalism.”

This was illustrated by his preference for parents rather than a nanny state to administer child care.

He advocated free trade, small government and low taxes. We’ll see how that legacy survives the new government and its media cheering section.

Debt must be held in check People are careless with other people’s money. This unfortunate description of human behaviour is particularly true of politicians seeking to buy our votes.

Recent letters to the editor focus on comparisons between Pierre Trudeau and Stephen Harper. The former was our country’s biggest all-time spender while the latter proved to be conscious of the deleterious effect of public debt.

One of the previous letters articulated deficit spending by comparing dollars without regard to inflation: an unfair depiction. Pierre Trudeau increased our national debt during his tenure by 560 per cent while Harper’s tenure resulted in a 26 per cent increase.

Debt drives up costs and, therefore, comparing the cost of living – Consumer Price Index (CPI) – provides a more meaningful comparison. CPI increases during the Trudeau era averaged nearly 10 per cent per annum whereas it averaged less than two per cent per annum during the Harper decade. In the final years of their leadership, personal bankruptcies during Trudeau’s reign was three times greater.

Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas is mourning the death of his 28-year-old son.

Ryan Plecas was found deceased on Tuesday, Dec. 22. The cause of death had not been confirmed as of press deadline.

Darryl was elected as a Liberal MLA in 2013 and previously served as the RCMP research chair and director at the Centre for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Research at the University of the Fraser Valley, where he worked for 34 years.

After he was elected, he served as the parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice and attorney general for crime reduction. In February of this year, he was named as the parliamentary secretary for seniors to the minister of health.

Just two months after he was elected, a special prosecutor was appointed by the Criminal Justice Branch to oversee a home invasion that involved his son.

Ryan was at his home on July 20, 2013, in the 3100 block of Gladwin Road when three masked suspects with firearms pushed their way in and demanded that he turn over cash and guns from a safe inside the suite. He complied with the request and then leaped from his second-storey balcony to escape.

Four suspects were soon arrested and charged by Abbotsford Police.

Ryan himself had one criminal charge – in December 2014 for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. That case was still before the courts, and his next appearance in Abbotsford provincial court had been scheduled for Jan. 14.

A special prosecutor was also appointed in that case, a move that was done to avoid any real or perceived improper influence because his father is a provincial politician.

The owner of a business whose warnings about the fire hazard in a neighbouring property went unheeded is asking for compensation to help pay for damage from a blaze in October.

the neighbouring site of the former Allwood Estates mobile home park.

Prior to the fire, Lee contacted both the property’s owner, Onni Group, and the City of Abbotsford to warn about the risk of a blaze next door. In August, he showed a reporter from The News a homeless camp abutting a tree which stood just feet from his business. The site, which was vacant but home to multiple homeless encampments, had already seen several fires break out.

“If a fire happens again, it could get to our building,” Lee told The News in August.

Two months later, his prediction came true, and his building sustained water damage during a fire which climbed the tree and shot flames up to 30 feet into the air.

Lee said he has fire insurance, but is reluctant to use it because his premiums would substantially increase.

He said that given the source of the blaze, and the multiple warnings provided before it broke out, the city, the property developer, or both, should cover the costs. Lee has collected more than 230 names on a petition calling for compensations.

Signatories include parents of students, along with neighbouring businesses.

Lee said he has worked to keep fees at his school down, but that the cost of dealing with the fire threatens that.

The damage, he said, “is not a big amount to Onni, but it’s a big amount to me.”

Meanwhile, Lee remains concerned about the property.

Onni has been undertaking construction on the site over the last month, and it’s no longer being used by the homeless. But he worries that if work on the property stops, homeless camps may return.

A gas station in the 32300 block of Huntingdon Road was robbed at gunpoint on Monday, Dec. 21.

Two Caucasian men entered the business at 7:20 p.m. and both pointed handguns at the employee working behind the counter.

They demanded cash, and the worker collapsed to the ground, triggering an alarm which scared off the culprits, who then fled westbound.

A diverse group of locals is coming together to sponsor a refugee family.

The Interfaith Refugee Project, borne out of the Abbotsford Interfaith Movement, has about 30 people of various beliefs working to provide everything needed to bring a family in need to Canada. So far, they’ve fundraised over $21,000 – still shy of the $34,000 they’ll need.

three United churches, a local Baha’i group, Emmanuel Baptist, and some people who are unaffiliated.

“We just want to help people get out of where they are,” said Sue Head, one of the group’s organizers.

The group is getting help with the paperwork from the Mennonite Central Committee, which has an established program for helping refugees and acting as a sponsorship agreement holder. They need to raise enough funds to support the family for a year, and they need to have 70 per cent of that – about $27,000 – before they can submit their sponsorship application.

“Living in B.C., it costs more, so we’ve been very generous in our budget,” said Head.

The amount they’ve already raised came out of existing charity funds from the various faith groups, over the six weeks they’ve been working so far. They’re planning dedicated fundraisers in the new year.

A refugee family would need help finding a place to stay, signing up for medical coverage, and many other tasks as part of getting settled.

“Accommodation’s going to be a lot of work, and you want to put them in a decent place,” said Head. “There’s lots of paperwork; we’ll help them through it. We have people who will help them learn how to get a bus – just life skills in Canada.”

They hope to submit their application by mid-Janaury. After that the process of being matched with a family will take about two or three weeks.

“Everything is sitting ready. We just need the family,” Head said.

A group of five local football players ended their high school careers with a big win earlier this month.

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds ended the British Columbia Major Midget League calendar year on a high note on Monday, beating the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs 3-0 at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.

The clubs played to a scoreless draw until the third period, when Abbotsford’s Andrew Sorensen scored the eventual game-winning goal.

Abbotsford products Ryan Crosby-Jones and Justin Plett drew assists on the opening goal.

About 30 seconds later, Jonathan Stein made it 2-0, and Abbotsford’s Justin Hargrave scored with 30 seconds left to make it a 3-0 game.

Plett and Sorensen picked up the helpers on the third goal, to give both players two-point nights.

Goalie Jordan Naylor picked up the shutout victory.

The win vaults the Thunderbirds into sixth place in the 11team BCMML, with a record of 11 wins, nine losses and six ties.

The game marks the end of the calendar year for the Thunderbirds, and they return to action on Jan. 9 against the North Island Silvertips in Parksville.

Fraser Valley next plays in Abbotsford on Jan. 30, when they welcome the Valley West Hawks to the ARC.

This year’s highlighted team is the five-time New York state champion Mount Vernon Knights. The Knights are ranked third in the state this season, led by point guard Marco Morency, who is ranked as one of the top players in the state.

Stevenson earns BFL title match

In less than a month, an Abbotsford-trained fighter gets a chance to win gold inside the Battelfield Fight League cage.

Mission native Liam Stevenson, who trains

out of Abbotsford’s Mamba Mixed Martial Arts Academy, takes on Saied Mirzaei for the amateur welterweight title on Jan. 22 at BFL 41 at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver.

Stevenson has an MMA record of six wins and zero losses, including a record of 1-0 inside the BFL cage in his career. Mirzaei has compiled a record of seven wins and three losses,

The seventh annual Timberwolves Classic senior boys basketball tournament is ready to roll at Bateman Secondary starting on Jan. 21.

The three-day event features 16 teams from all across the province.

It is a double-elimination tournament, with squads eliminated after losing two games.

Local teams competing at the event are the host Bateman Timberwolves and the Hansen Hurricanes.

Others teams participating include: Surrey’s Sullivan Heights Stars, the Mission Roadrunners, Richmond’s RA McMath Wildcats, Maple Ridge’s Thomas Haney Thunder, the Pitt Meadows Marauders, North Vancouver’s Bodwell Bruins, Nanaimo’s Wellington Wildcats, Vancouver’s Windermere Warriors, Richmond’s StevestonLondon Sharks, the Salmon Arm Golds, Burnaby’s Byrne Creek Bulldogs, Langley’s Brookswood Bobcats, Burnaby’s St. Thomas More Saints, and Nelson’s LV Rogers Bombers.

The Hurricanes open against Sullivan Heights, while the Timberwolves play Mission to kick off the tournament. The championship game is set for Jan. 23 at 8:30 p.m.

The senior boys tournament is the fifth of six Timberwolves Classic tournaments in December and January.

The junior girls hosted a tournament on Dec. 4 and 5, while the Grade 9 boys hosted on

The host Abbotsford Panthers, Bateman Timberwolves, Mouat Hawks, Yale Lions, and MEI Eagles are the local teams in the tournament.

Other teams include: Vancouver’s Kitsilano Blue Demons, Chilliwack’s GW Graham Grizzlies, Vancouver’s St. George’s School Saints, the Kelowna Owls, Vancouver’s Winston Churchill Bulldogs, and Langley’s Walnut Grove Gators.

The tournament features five of the top ten 4A basketball teams in the province in the Owls (#1), the Bulldogs (#2), the Gators (#3), the Blue Demons (#4), and the Lions (#6).

Other top teams in their respective conferences are the Eagles (#9 in AAA) and the Grizzlies (#2 in AA).

Teams at the Snowball Classic are battling for the Peter Buhler Memorial Trophy, which was donated by the Abbotsford Secondary students’ council in his honour.

The Snowball Classic is recognized as the longest running tournament in the province. Vancouver College won the first ever tournament, with MEI being the first Abbotsford school to win back the title in 1963.

The host Panthers earned their first Snowball title in 1964. The Panthers last won a Snowball title in 1999.

The last Abbotsford team to claim the title was the Yale Lions in 2010.

The Fairfax Lions from Los Angeles won the 2015 tournament, defeating the Burnaby South Rebels 81-60 in the final.

It all gets going when the Panthers host the Timberwolves in the opening game on Jan. 13. Tipoff is set for 12:45 p.m. at the Abby Secondary gym. The final is set for Jan. 16 at 8 p.m.

A tournament pass for all four days costs $20, with the tickets costing $5 on Wednesday and $6 on Thursday. Admission for Friday and Saturday is $8. Student pricing is $2 on Wednesday and Thursday, and $3 on Friday and Saturday.
