Rimbey to host provincial Peewee C tournament

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey has been selected as one of the communities to host the 2016 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships.

The Rimbey Renegade Canalta Peewee hockey team will host the Peewee C tournament to be held March 10 to 13.

“The host committee is planning a memorable weekend for our players, families and community,” said Maria Tisdale from the minor hockey association. “Eight teams, from seven different zones within Alberta will play during the weekend, which means a lot of extra people visiting our little town. We rely on the support of our wonderful community to help make an event like this possible.”

Tisdale said the committee will organize fundraisers and arrange for volunteers and special events in the months leading up to the tournament.

The committee’s first fundraiser will be a bottle drive on Jan. 2. Players, families and friends will collect bottles around town and anyone who will be away at that time or live out of town may contact Pam Burchnall at (4030505-4688 to arrange for pick up.

The majority of teams competing in minor provincial championship tournaments qualify by winning a zone playdown.

These start in mid-January and include up to 1,000 teams vying for the right to represent their zone at the provincial championships.

Host teams receive an automatic berth in the championship they are hosting, although they do participate in zone playdowns and have the opportunity to win their zone title.

This year Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships will be sponsored by ATB Financial and hockey fans will have the chance to watch their favorite team go for a 2016 provincial championship.

Tournaments will be hosted in communities across Alberta going as far north as High Level to Taber in the south, Provost in the east and Grande Prairie in the west.

“Playing in the provincials is every young hockey player’s goal at the start of each season,’

said John Windwick, ATBs vice president, community initiatives. “We can’t

wait to see the smiles on the players’ faces when they arrive at the cham-

pionship tournaments across the province. We’ll definitely do our part to

make sure it’s a special experience for everyone involved, including the

And now, just days after the celebration, the holiday is all bundled up in yesterday’s crumpled wrapping paper, ready to be recycled and the new year is but an embryo waiting to emerge.

And for a quick and fleeting moment in time there is no great holiday to celebrate.

son punctuated with the comforting familiarity of Christmas concerts and cheerful Christmas greetings, ringing out like silver bells in the frosty December air.

And, also for me, the holiday season has been highlighted by unexpected kindnesses that have lighted up my world to an even brighter hue than the Christmas lights stretched across the top of my garage door.

These unexpected kindnesses dropped into my world remind me of a line taken from the famous Desiderata which says eloquently: with all its sham,

drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

As 2015 rolls to a finish it is nice to know that traits such as kindness and compassion still exist, even as our world continues to be shaken by wars and rumours of wars.

For each and everyone of us, the year ahead is full of uncharted territory, a thought which could be slightly disturbing.

But, once again I am reminded of the beautiful words of The Desiderata: You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars: you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt, the universe is unfolding as it should.

And so it seems to me if we simply believe those words and trust that they will be as accurate in 2016 as they were in 1692 when The Desiderata was found, we will eliminate a lot of useless worrying from our lives.

And, despite the economic downturn, the continual upheaval over Bill 6 and the overall unrest that shrouds the entire world, allow optimism to flourish.

And allow ourselves to have a truly happy new year!

the shoulder season –a time when golfers go into withdrawal because of the frost warnings and hockey players await with anticipation newly scheduled ice times.

It’s all good. It’s a time to exhale and relax.

The deadline has passed.

In the weekly newspaper world which I inhabit on a regular basis, deadline is our bottom line, our motto, our common ground, and our own secret password.

Early deadline is even more deadly, so to speak!

So, for the last few days remaining in 2015, it’s nice to know Christmas and its ensuing deadlines have come and gone.

Looking back on the days between the deadlines, it seems we’ve all lived through a whole lot of experiences, some good and some not so good, but all of which have served to shape us and, hopefully, leave us a little more humble, a whole lot more grateful and maybe even a tiny bit wiser.

For me, it’s been a sea-

The continued and, in my opinion, undeserved fascination with the English royal family disappoints me. Scientifically, there’s no difference genetically from any member of the House of Windsor or Hanover than there is any other family in the world, despite what the bluebloods themselves might think.

So why do people worship the royal family, rud-

dy-cheeked babies and all?

I have no idea. Celebrity worship in general stupefies me. Maybe royal-worshippers need to know a bit more about the ceremonial head of our government and the system from which she hails.

Want to know why parts of the United Kingdom hold independence votes?

Well, let’s look at something that occurred in Ireland between 1845 and 1852 called the Great Potato Famine. The famine, which caused untold damage to Irish society, is commonly blamed on a simple vegetable disease called Phytophthora infestans; royal family apologists like to stop the story at this point.

However, historians who aren’t concerned with protecting the English royal family’s reputation are acutely aware of plenty of other factors which entered into the famine, including greed, landlords and English bluebloods

and their attitude towards anyone they considered “common.”

Irish property was in the hands of the “ascendancy class” (wealthy Englishmen) at that time, who were the quintessential “absentee landlords.”

They hired managers to collect exorbitant rent from Irish folk who were expected in many cases to raise a crop on a parcel of land less than five acres in size. The Irish farmers had to not only pay rent, they had to support their families as well. Virtually the only crop possible was potatoes.

In 1845, the incompetent government of the UK was aware of a disease appearing that held the threat of at the very least severely affecting potato harvest (The Gardeners’ Chronicle and Horticultural Gazette was reporting the news).

British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, one of the bluebloods, commented to a friend, there’s “always a

tendency to exaggeration in Irish news”.

The blight attacked the Irish potato crop that year and for many afterwards.

Thus began the Great Potato Famine. However, the English kept exporting food from Ireland, even at the height of the famine.

Then the landlords, bluebloods and other sponges attacked. Despite the effects the potato famine was having on Irish households, landlords didn’t cut them any slack. Rent was expected to be paid, despite the Irish countryside being wracked with starvation. Then the mass evictions started in 1847 for as little as 4 pounds, about $8 today, a tactic some historians feel was the English strategy from the beginning. Clear out those Irish and we can keep their land ourselves, plant our own crops etc. pondered the bluebloods (Helen Litton’s 2006 book The Irish Famine: An Illustrated History, page

91).

The effects of the Great Potato Famine were catastrophic…for the Irish. It’s estimated about 1 to 1.5 million people died from starvation or disease within 10 years, according to a census commonly thought to have underestimated the deaths, plus the socalled Irish Diaspora that occurred during the famine. About 250,000 Irish were fleeing the country per year during the famine, many coming to North America.

Historians differ on why the famine wasn’t predicted and why so little was done to stop it. And why the “ascendancy class” exploited it for financial gain.

Think about that the next time Entertainment Tonight wants to show you what the royal family is up to.

Deadline extended for recycling program

BY TREENA MIELKE Rimbey town council has extended its deadline to renew registrations for the recycling program.

Acting CAO Donna Tona said the deadline was originally slated for Dec. 31 but because council is still working on the 2016 budget the deadline has been extended to Feb. 14.

“I don’t want anyone to worry,” said Tona, “as the deadline has been extended.”

A total of 28 people have signed up for the grass recycling user pay program.

Under the terms of the program residents purchased an 80-litre bin at a cost of $11 plus tax and registered with the town for a fee of $3.

Items allowed in the yard compost disposal include leaves, grass clippings, mulch, flowers and plants, unscreened compost (decomposed yard waste materials), non-invasive weeds and tree and brush prunings.

“We are not taking new registrations at this time as council has yet to make a decision (as to if the program will continue), said Tona.

Earlier this year close to 500 residents signed a petition requesting the town to re-instate the grass-recycling pick up, but at first count, only 14 homeowners signed up for the user pay program.

Appreciative crowd attends community chorus concert SUBMITTED The Rimbey Community Chorus held its annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 15 to a standing room only crowd.

For many years, the chorus has been entertaining the community in the true spirit of Christmas with a variety of traditional and modern Christmas carols.

The chorus is led by the accomplished and dedicated director, Annette Boorman.

Members are drawn together by the love of music and of singing in four-part harmony. This year there were more than 50 individuals, some of whom have sung with the chorus since its beginning, while others are newcomers.

The chorus was accompanied by two gift pianists, Charlote Bonella and Grace Bennik.

Several of the selections showcased the talents of percussionist, Connie Jensen and Flautist, Jody Blackmore.

For the past several years, free-will donations from the evening performance have gone to support the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

It is a farmer-generated charitable group support-

ed by 15 church and relief agencies.

Its goal is to end global hunger.It supplies food

needs during times of crisis and works to promote sustainable agriculture in needy countries around the world.

This year the Christmas Concert raised $3,394 in donations. This amount will be matched by federal

funding.

The community chorus thanks the community for its generosity and send

wishes of hope, peace, joy and love during the Christmas season and in the upcoming year.

On behalf of the Bellows family we would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who came together, in our loss of Jill Bellows.

First and foremost, we would like to thank the medical team along with the fire personnel and police who attended. We would also like to thank the hospital staff and victims service. We respect how tough your jobs must be in these moments.

Next, a very special thanks to Canyon Technical Services, whom Darell is employed by. Your overwhelming support and generosity towards the family is both amazing and truly humbling. What a special bunch of people.

Third, our families would like to thank all of our friends and family, who went out of their way, to help comfort us in this very sad time. The prepared meals, the visits, the donated time to help tidy and organize the house, so everybody could get back to an inkling of normalcy and of course all the young ladies donating their time to help organize and prepare such a beautiful lunch after the service.

Last but not least, a big thank you to the community. It has truly rallied together to make this time not so hard for the family.

BRUNET Louis A. Brunet of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 80 years.

Louis will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife of 58 years, Fern; his son, Dennis (Kati) Brunet of Spruce Grove; and his daughter, Donna (Louis) Regnier of Rimbey; in addition to two cherished grandchildren: Brandon Regnier of Whitecourt, Alberta; and Amber Regnier of Red Deer. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by four sisters; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Louis was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Eveline; his son, Ronald; and twelve siblings.

With respect for Louis’ wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Louis’ Memory may be made directly to the David Thompson Health Trust, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.

All Bentley in novice tournament final

It was an all Bentley final in the Bentley Canucks Minor Hockey Novice Tournament that ran December 11, 12, 13.

For the first time in many years, Bentley is proudly icing two Novice hockey teams for the seven and eight year olds - the Bentley Mighty ‘Nucks and the Bentley Canuckleheads.

In this home tournament both won all three of their division games to place them first in each division meaning they met each other in the final game on Sunday.

After a hard fought match up, which was visible on many of the player’s faces, the Mighty ‘Nucks came out on top 8-4.

The Mighty ‘Nucks had won their three division games with scores of 5-4, 9-3 and 9-5 while the Canuckleheads had won their games 7-4, 8-7 and 7-0.

In the final game, the MVP’s were Easton McKinlay for the Mighty ‘Nucks and Harper Walker on the Canuckleheads.

Winning “Heart and Hustle” was Saydee Zarantonello for the Mighty ‘Nucks and Max Burris on the Canuckleheads.

Coach for the Mighty ‘Nucks is Kelly McKinlay with assistants Pat Madden, Scott Dickson and Shaun Woroschuk and manager is Heidi McKinlay.

The Canuckleheads coach is Ryan Walker with Will Kingma, Rick

Wells and manager Joclyn Walker.

Other teams competing included the Rocky Roadrunners who were second in Division 1 and the Sylvan Lake Castaway Sports Lakers who finished second in Division 2.

There were two teams from Bentley, two teams from Sylvan Lake, two from Airdrie, one from Rocky and one from Eckville.

Support from the area continues to be tremendous with 40 sponsors listed, about 35 items on the raffle tables, and a wonderful bunch of volunteers.

The arena concession offered a special all weekend. Weather did cause some travel concerns but couldn’t deter the play.
