Each year, it’s a coin toss whether Kamloops will have a white Christmas.

This year, heads comes with a toque.

“For Kamloops, we are actually forecasting a white Christmas this year,” Weather Network meteorologist Michael Carter told KTW. That doesn’t mean we should expect to see snow falling on Christmas Day. It means we meet Environment Canada’s definition of a white Christmas: at least two centimetres of snow on the ground as of 7 a.m. on Dec. 25.

“In Kamloops, that actually occurs about 51 per cent of the time,” Carter said.

A “perfect” Christmas — when there is both snow on the ground and in the air — only occurs in Kamloops about 25 per cent of the time and likely won’t happen this year, with the Christmas Day forecast calling for a high of about -4 C with a mix of sun and cloud.

“But, you’ll be able to get out and enjoy the sun,” Carter said. “Christmas Day is going to be the clearest.”

Historically, the average maximum temperature in Kamloops on Christmas day is slightly below freezing, at about -0.8 C. The warmest was 12.8 C in 2005, while the coldest was -27.8 C in 1964.

“Definitely not approaching the record on either end,” Carter said. “Just a bit cooler than normal.”

December has been mild in Kamloops so far, with warm days like Dec. 9, which saw a temperature of 13 C, and many others approaching the upper single digits.

When KTW spoke to Carter earlier this week, Kamloops had seen just eight centimetres of snow in all of December, a month in which an average of 22 centimetres usually falls.

We might inch closer to that number, with snow expected in our area on and off in the week after Christmas — about 40 per cent chance of the white stuff every day from

Boxing Day through to New Year’s Day. But, an El Nino year means a generally milder and drier winter is expected, Carter said.

“We expect that to persist.”

Thus far, the ski hills have been enjoying a banner season, with Sun Peaks and Harper Mountain reporting excellent conditions.

Meanwhile, on Nov. 21, the Stake Lake cross-country trails south of Kamloops had their earliest opening in 21 years.

While much of Western Canada is predicted to see a white Christmas, it’s a different story in warm Central and Eastern Canada as temperature records are expected to be broken.

Forecast Christmas Day maximum temperatures: Halifax (13 C), Toronto (4 C), Montreal (6 C), Ottawa (2 C) and St. John’s (8 C).

“Kids here, hopefully they asked for a bike here for Christmas,” Carter said from Toronto.

The Night Before Christmas We have three young girls who are really looking forward to Christmas.

Throughout the house, you can hear the children singing Christmas carols and talking about what they want for Christmas.

My husband and I have had several heated conversations about what we are going to do about Christmas this year as I am disabled and not able to work and my husband has not worked for several months.

I went to the mall when the Santa booth was just opening.

I figured it wouldn’t hurt, so I stood in the lineup. When it was my turn, I sat on Santa’s lap and told him how difficult it had been for our family this year with our money pains.

Santa listened intently and assured me we would have a positive, memorable Christmas this year.

I went home feeling a little foolish, but also feeling a bit better.

As the weeks went by and Christmas got closer, I was not as cheerful as I thought I should be, but I did what I could to keep the children busy and in the Christmas spirit.

We approached various organizations and managed to get a few gifts for the children and plenty of good food for Christmas dinner.

In the back of my mind, I kept going over my conversation with Santa and wondered if that was why things were going so well.

Now it is Christmas Eve and the girls are restless, but I managed to get them

to bed at a reasonable hour.

I told them the famous Christmas story : “It was the night before Christmas when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse . . .”

My husband and I went to sleep not knowing the girls were in for a big adventure — when out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, Santa landed on our roof and zipped down the chimney.

He woke up the girls and got them dressed in their warm winter gear.

Up the chimney they went, everyone cozily wrapped in blankets as the sleigh took off into the night.

The girls helped Santa organize the gifts by reading all he letters St. Nick had received.

If there were a lot of children in the house, the girls even got to go down the chimney with Santa to help fill the stockings.

Wow, what a wonderful adventure for the girls.

They were so happy they got to help Santa on the most important night of the year.

Christmas morning arrived and the girls were up shortly past dawn, but instead of rushing to their stockings, they excitedly talked about what they had done the night before.

I got up when I heard the excited chatter and they told me what had happened in the night.

I wasn’t sure I believed them until I saw their rosy red cheeks and a stocking hanging from the chimney for me, with gifts and a note signed by Santa.

Well, Christmas this year was the best one ever. It didn’t matter what was under the tree or what we had for supper that night.

The girls had experienced the greatest gift of all — the gift of giving.

Virginia, your little friends are wrong.

There would be no child-like faith then, no

poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.

The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies!

You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?

Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.

The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see.

Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?

Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there.

Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart.

Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond.

Is it all real?

Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus!

Thank God he lives!

And he lives forever.

A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

O

ur special son, Jakob, received an extra special early Christmas gift when I came home from Ontario last week.

Jakob has autism, a life-long neurological disorder that prevents proper understanding of what a person sees, hears or otherwise senses.

People with autism spectrum disorder can become confused and respond inappropriately in social situations.

When I returned to Kamloops on Dec. 18, it was just a regular day for Jakob, with school and a bus ride home.

However, when he came inside the house, much to his surprise, there was a sweet, big, yellow Labrador retriever waiting for him.

Jakob looked at him with a big smile and gave him

a not-so-sure pat in greeting.

The dog’s name is Birch and he is special because he is an autism assistance dog. He is trained to help keep our son safe and aid in Jakob’s self-calming when he feels overwhelmed and stressed.

Birch also offers friendship and a sense of security for our family.

So, this Christmas is extra special as we’re so grateful and blessed to have a new addition to our family.

Birch is also a forever friend to our Jakob.

Merry Christmas.

T

his Christmas story took place here in Kamloops, my birth home.

My first husband, Scotty de Bruijn, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed at Mount Lolo. He and I and our six children lived in a house at the old navy depot, which is now the west boundary of Thompson Rivers University. Our eldest son left home shortly after we moved there from North Kamloops.

Scotty had a near-fatal heart attach and was in Royal Inland Hospital for months and our children had not seen their dad for all that time. He was in intensive care in serious condition.

The old “no children allowed” rule was really enforced at that time.

I was going up to the hospital for an hour before my 7 a.m. shift and, for three or four hours after shift change at 3 p.m., home to make and have supper with the kids. Then I would go back to the hospital.

Scotty was getting slightly better and we had hopes of his recovery so he could be discharged. He was transferred into a two-bed ward. Then, on one of my early morning visits, I discovered he had a stroke during the night.

Some time later, when I went up for my usual visit, I almost had a heart attack myself as his bed was empty and the room all cleaned up for someone new. I thought he had passed away and went rushing out, ready to take on the world for

not even calling me!

Instead, I was informed the air force had transferred him by plane to the military hospital at Station Esquimalt on Vancouver Island.

To say I was upset is too mild. I worked five days a week, Monday to Friday, and there was absolutely no way I could make connections by plane, train, bus or car to make it there to visit him.

We were set on having Christmas alone, without our dad.

However, on the evening on Dec. 22, I got a phone call from the section Scotty worked in at Mount Lolo. I was told to have myself and the kids ready

with just a small amount of luggage and a couple of changes of clothes because someone would be picking us up in a service station wagon early in morning to take us to Victoria to spend Christmas with Scotty in the hospital.

I had to scramble to arrange the time off from work and reassure my youngest after he howled, “But, how will Santa know where to find us?”

Our second-eldest son, who was in high school, had an exam on Dec. 23, so he couldn’t come with us.

But, as he was in air cadets, he was told to be in his uniform that

night and they got him on a service aircraft to join us there.

It is the normal practice in the service that each man in the section either had three days off over Christmas or days off over New Year’s.

Two wonderful airmen had given up one day of their threeday leave to drive us.

The hospital had discharged everyone who could possibly go home and had converted one whole ward to a playroom for our kids. They had beds and were immediately taught how to manoeuvre them up and down. The staff, all military, had brought toys, books and puzzles

from their homes.

Rooms were reserved for us at a Red Cross house and arrangements made for me to rent a small car to transport us to and from the hospital.

They even had Santa come on Christmas morning to bring each of them a gift. They had also bought gifts for Scotty and me.

Scotty was much better and was able to enjoy his kids, even though it played him right out and could barely manage to stay awake until we left to drive back to the Red Cross house.

So, my children had Christmas twice and met a whole bunch of wonderful Christmas angels!

On the afternoon of Sunday, December 20th, 2015 Richard David Nielsen passed away peacefully with his family in his presence. He will lovingly be remembered by his wife Judy, step-daughter Lynnette (Keith), step-son Richard (Gina), his three granddaughters Danica (Dom), Chayla and Kendra and his great-granddaughter Isabella, two brothers Ken (Janet) and John (Diane), and five sisters Virginia El-Zorkany, Lorraine (Frank Green), Kathleen (Al Gardiner), Frances Mary (Al Petersen) and Carolyn (Mike Kazarian) and his several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Richard was predeceased by his parents Chris and Arlene Nielsen in 1979.

Richard was born in Ponoka, Alberta on June 10, 1959 and moved to Kamloops with his family in 1972. He attended Norkam Secondary and went on to Cariboo College where he graduated as a journeyman carpenter. He worked for several different home builders in the last 35 years. While Richard was working a job in Golden, BC, he met the love of his life Judy and convinced her to move to Kamloops and become his wife. Together they have spent the last 31 years camping, fishing, hiking and exploring the areas around Kamloops and the Interior. On many of their camping trips his granddaughters would be in tow, he was happy to teach them how to fish, (yes we lost a few rods in the lake) fix things around the house and even gave driving lessons as they got older. He truly loved spending quality time with his family and never missed an extracurricular activity or Sunday dinner. His great-granddaughter was the twinkle in his eye and he spent the last year doting over her.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Del Begio, his sister Kathy, friend Victor and the wonderful staff at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at the Calvary Community Church on Wednesday, December 30th at 1:00 pm.

Ron will best be remembered as a kind, gentle man with a large circle of friends who shared his interests: hockey (watching and coaching), sailing, golf with his regular golfing group, travelling by RV, and motorcycling with ‘The Mild Bunch’. He was loyal, maintaining friendships from even his boarding school days in Gravelbourg and Yorkton.

He enjoyed his colleagues from his 30 years at the Credit Union, and he was looking forward to his retirement with Tracey, in the New Year.

Obituaries & In Memoriam SHIRLEY DREW BERTOLI (nee Noble) Shirley D Bertoli (nee Noble), 83 years old, left us on Sunday, December 20th at the Royal Inland Hospital after a brief illness.

Shirley was born on March 28, 1932 in Kamloops, B.C. to Anne and William Noble. Shirley was the youngest of five children and grew up in Birch Island and later moved to Duncan to attend high school, living with her older sister Mildred and her family. Shirley moved back to Kamloops to care for her father, and embarked on a long and rewarding career with the Fish and Wildlife department.

Throughout her life she maintained a positive demeanor and her love of life and nature is reflected in her children and grandchildren, as well as the many nieces and nephews that loved her and followed her on her famous nature walks at Scotch Creek and other places.

Shirley was very proud of her son Mark Bertoli (Donna) and her daughter Linda Dawson Reid (Andy) and nothing made her happier than being with her amazing grandchildren Marisa and Taylor Bertoli and Dylan Dawson.

Shirley is survived by her son Mark (Donna), daughter Linda (Andy) grandchildren Marisa, Taylor and Dylan, as well as her sister Zelma (Bill) and her brother Bill (Gert) along with numerous nieces and nephews and wonderful friends. She is predeceased by her brother

Bill and sister Mildred (Stub), and her dear friends Helen and Jim Dawson. Shirley also leaves behind her special family, the ones she loved, laughed with and truly cared for.

Shirley had a real zest for life, she loved to garden, play cards and dance, but what she loved best was being with her family and many friends. Shirley had deep roots in the North Thompson and the Wells Grey area. Shirley had a unique ability to take time and see the true beauty of this world. The smiles and joy of the ones she loved, the new green leaves in the spring, or God’s beautiful display in the colors of the Fall. Shirley was also a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary.

Shirley was the glue of her family. If there was a message she would want to leave behind it would be to be kind and do things for others. Shirley had a passion for visiting and bringing joy and kindness into the lives of many friends and family. It would be truly Shirley to make someone laugh, send a card and most of all pay it forward.

There will be a Celebration of Shirley’s Life at Schoening Funeral Service, 513 Seymour St, Kamloops, BC V2C 2G8 on Monday, December 28th at 2:00 pm.

January 12, 1940 – December 14, 2015 Patricia Stefanik of Kamloops passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 75 years of age. Her memory will be treasured by her loving husband Carl Stefanik of nearly 58 years, children Susan (Jerry) Gobbee of Kamloops, David Stefanik of Kamloops (predeceased), and Marianne Stefanik (Terry Dilts) of Paris, Ontario; grandchildren Joseph (Carissa) Gobbee, Jason (Chantelle) Gobbee, Justin Gobbee, and Jaime Laplante; great-grandchildren Maya, Jacob, Taylynn, Gavin, Keaton and Kiara; brother and sister-in-law; Darell (Karen) of Kamloops; Dannie, Marilyn and Nick McFayden, all predeceased. Carl’s family; brother and sisters-in-law; many loving nieces and nephews, and cherished friends. To Gail Stefanik, her best friend, a loving thank you.

Patricia was born in Kamloops, with her Mom Florence McFayden making the trail, walking to deliver Pat at RIH, from the north side of the river. She lived her childhood, as a farm girl, and attended school in Vinsulla and Kamloops. Pat became a dispatcher for Yellow Cabs, having met her husband Carl there and their story is shown by how their family grew and is still growing. Pat retired from the city of Kamloops, working from 1979-2004.

A Private Family Celebration of life will take place at the Summit Drive Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 12-2pm.

L

ong ago, men foretold, the coming of a child; Distant lands with rolling sands, celestial stars above; Gave rise to hope of salvation’s light, for those of humankind; Deliverance from worldly strife and bonds of working hands; Promises of eternal peace, through Heaven’s mystic gate.

A mother’s love continued on, throughout 2,000 years; The story handed down through age, of sacrifice and trust; Scripture told of faith for man, to reach a higher state; A child birthed holds virtue pure, and knows no worldly sin; 2,000 years and children born, hope for mankind strives.

Through winter snow in northern skies, a single star did shine; On arctic land where life is scarce and children are so dear; A mother gives into the world, her only child’s breath; The tiny soul with frail life, born early Christmas morn; Reached valiantly through all odds and fought her right to live.

A race of man remains with time, a culture all their own Inuit clan, the child lame, she struggled to survive; Her clear eyes shone like beams of light, reflecting lustrous stars; That reappears in early dawn, on horizons winter fest; Following a legend told, Aagjuuk she was named.

A Christmas wish, a Christmas kiss the advent of her birth; Love’s strongest tie held her to earth; the years continued on; Aagjuuk lived and slowly grew,

with hardships on the way; The girl child knew what many dread, a task of daily strain; She came to learn her mother’s heart, the wish that held her near.

Nine times she felt her mother’s lips, to kiss her Christmas day; Nine years drew near to celebrate, through winter’s snowy spell; Her mother’s dreams to hold on close, to all she ever knew; To keep a kiss for every year, the morning of first light; To keep a wish forever more, to breathe the northern air.

A spoken sound to one that knows, as only mothers do; The child reached out, and called her close, Anaana is her name; An Inuit word meant mother to the one who claimed her world; Aagjuuk knew to summon might, find courage where she could; The time had come to speak at length, to let her mother know.

“I cannot run or skip or sing, I cannot cook or fish; I have no strength to weave or sew, or even go to school; I listen hard to life’s distress, that’s all I’ll ever know; I sense what we have lost in sight, and mislaid along the way; Our future lies in jeopardy, without the will to try.

“If I could get the world to heed, what words I have to say, To change the hurt and suffering, for people of the land; What men with war and weaponry care less for what they do; To listen to a child’s pain, in the cold of winter night; And watch the face of a dying race, on all of humankind.

“I’m named for stars that bring the sun, mankind needs this now;

Darkness speaks to those that hear, the call to rule us all; A shining chance is what I have, for this tribe we call our own; I gave you what your heart did crave, and stayed here earthly bound; My Christmas wish has finally come; it’s time to let me go.

Radiant beams did glow, through dawn’s early splendid fare; Two brilliant stars reflecting light, from a sun beneath the plane; That shone so bright through winter night, straight up in the sky; Daybreak came with silver rays, two lines side by side; Heralding forgotten song, for one born on Christmas Day. She gently sighed and gently died, then let go her mother’s hand; A grief so hard struck through the heart, of the one who bore this child; Sorrow burned throughout the air, and keened a distant sound; Her mother softly laid her lips, to her daughter’s downy cheek; A Christmas kiss in morning light, the last she’ll ever know.

Long ago, men foretold, and legend carries on; Salvation’s light from worldly strife, where too many children go; By a Christmas kiss to this child’s wish, upon the northern stars; Revealed to all everlasting peace, this was Aagjuut’s desire; Faith holds strong with sacrifice, hope for mankind strives.

In an Inuit legend, the meaning of the term Aagjuuk (agruk) it is said means something like; “The two beams of light cast by the Sun when it first reappears above the horizon in late December.”

Field lacrosse is Canada’s original national sport, and is played during fall and winter seasons. It is a great team sport for boys and girls, from age 6 to 19, offering excellent conditioning, sportsmanship and teamwork. It is one of the least expensive team sports in BC. For younger ages, the season runs from September to November/December. For older ages, it runs from September to February, depending on playoff performance and qualification for provincial championships.

It was two years after my dad had passed away and my mom and I were standing in a long line at the Greyhound Bus Depot to send Christmas gift parcels to relatives.

A lady in front of

us appeared to be in some distress, as she was told the company could not accept a cheque for payment of shipping.

She tearfully told the clerk her dad had recently died and she needed to send the presents to her family at this poignant time.

My Christmas spirit

and empathy came into play. I hardly ever carried cash but, on this day, I had a fair amount on me, so I stepped forward and said I would pay the cost for her.

I’ll never forget her expression of thankfulness, as she assured me she would pay me back.

A few days later a package was delivered to me, it included a lovely handmade gift and a cheque covering the postage.

I never told her where I lived or worked, but she took the time to find out and returned the Christmas spirit and trust.

Advent and the affect of humility

O

ne of the forgotten aspects of the Christmas story is the birth of humility in the person of the Christ child.

Innumerable Christmas devotionals point out the humble circumstances of Jesus’ birth — among shepherds, in a crude stable, with a feed trough for a bassinet.

When Jesus himself tried to summarize why people should take up the yoke of following him, he said it was because he was meek and humble (Matt. 11:29).

Seldom, however do we explore the full implications of how Jesus’ radical humility shapes the way we live our lives daily.

But, the same humility was evident at the root of the Incarnation story, God being willing to take up human form, thus subjecting himself to human ministrations.

A truly spiritual person will always be ready to humble himself. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

Humility is crucial for Christians.

We can only receive

Christ through meekness and humility.

Jesus humbled himself and was exalted by God. Therefore, joy and power through humility is the very dynamic of the Christian life.

If we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, he will exalt us at the proper time.

This teaching of scriptures is simple and obvious.

The problem is it takes great humility to understand humility and even more to resist the pride that comes so naturally with even a discussion of the subject.

We are on slippery ground because humility cannot be attained directly.

”

Once we become aware of the poison of pride, we begin to notice it all around us.

We hear it in the sarcastic, snarky voices in newspaper columns.

We see it in civic, cultural and business leaders who never admit weaknesses or failure.

We see it in our neighbours and some friends with their jealousy, self-pity and boasting.

And, we vow not to talk or act like that.

If we then notice “a humble turn of mind” in ourselves, we immediately become smug.

But, that is pride in our humility.

Humility is so shy.

If we begin talking about it, it disappears.

To even ask the question, “Am I humble?” is not to be so.

Examining your heart, even for pride, often leads to being proud about your diligence and circumspection.

Gracious, self-forgetful humility should be one of the primary things that should distinguish Christian believers from the many types of moral, decent people in the world.

But, I think it is fair to say humility is largely missing in the church.

Therefore, nonbelievers, detecting the stench of sanctimony turn away.

Humility is only achieved as a by-product of understanding, believing and marvelling at the gospel of grace.

When we listen to the gospel preached or meditate on it in the

scriptures, we should drive it so deeply into our hearts, imaginations and thinking that we begin to instinctively live out the gospel.

God often breaks us by allowing us to be misunderstood, misjudged, falsely accused and publicly humiliated.

It is best to leave such matters with God. He knows what he is doing and he has got everything under his control.

He chisels away at the rock to sculpture the likeness of Jesus in his people.

Some parts of the rock may be very hard, wherein he has to use persecution to bring out the “shine.”

No one who waits upon God will ever be disappointed or be put to shame (Isaiah 49:23).

If we honour God,

he will honour us one day.

If we are serious about following the Lord, we will find that God takes us through many painful experiences.

But, his purpose in all of them is to free us from the opinions of men and from the chains that tie us down to earth, so that we can “mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31).

God will order our circumstances to so humble us before men that we get to the place where we finally care only for His opinion of us.

Our spiritual authority would then be exceedingly powerful.

Freedom of religious thought

Editor: Re: Michael Fenemore’s Faith column of Dec. 4 (‘Did Jesus Christ Really Rise from the Dead?’): Is Fenemore’s statement true that “Christians have no option but to renounce the teaching of modern science and declare by faith the earth is flat”?

I see no value in debating Fenemore, but seek to remove doubts his articles may have created.

As a pastor with a bachelor of science, I dispute his claims that the Bible teaches a flat earth.

In my opinion, Fenemore has been intellectually dishonest with KTW readers and is presenting partial truths.

He submits two polar extremes of biblical interpretation, in which one either interprets it 100 per cent literally or symbolizes large portions of scripture, and said nothing about the commonly used literal-grammaticalhistorical method.

This method interprets scripture literally the majority of the time, except where the context makes it impossible and necessitates a symbolic or figurative meaning.

For brevity, I will address two of Fenemore’s claims.

First, he referenced Psalms 19:56, which speaks of the sun “. . . as a bridegroom coming out of his cham-

ber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.”

Grammatically, “as” indicates a simile, meaning these verses are not to be interpreted literally, but metaphorically. Additionally, this passage uses phenomenological language, which is based on sensory perception and is not a scientific statement.

Nobody would question why various meteorological societies have “sunrise” and “sunset” tables and think they believe the sun rotates around the earth.

Second, Fenemore observed the Bible indicates God and Heaven are “up” and points to the confusion of two people in North America and Australia both raising arms towards the sky in prayer, but in opposite directions.

This is easily answered by realizing directions in the Bible are not relative to the reader, but to Israel’s physical location.

None of Fenemore’s claims should cause concern for the Bible reader. It will always be the inspired, infallible Word of God. Gregory Vaal pastor, Berean Baptist Church Kamloops

soft voice outside our expansive tent wakes us in the pre-dawn. It’s our Karibu safari guide, Lourens Gaseb.

Normally, a 5 a.m. wake-up would be deadly, but we’re happy to rise from our cozy beds and turn on our overhead solar-powered lights.

We take turns in the tent’s bathroom, using the ‘en-suite’ facilities and washing with hot water from the Thermos provided by our safari crew. Then, we follow the solar lamps leading to our dining room tent.

The aroma of coffee entices us to the sideboard and a grinning Joseph — our camp

manager — greets us as he adds a covered serving dish of bacon to the toast and eggs.

We greet our fellow safari travellers: Ana hails from Spain, Franck and Sonia from France and Belgium and Mark from England. We are all from different countries but united in anticipation.

This is just day three of Karibu’s two-week classic luxury Namibian safari, offering accommodation partially in tents and partially in classy digs.

It’s 5:45 a.m. and we roll out in our elongated land cruiser with two pop-up roofs — it’s a heavy-duty four-wheel drive accommodating 11 people, so the six of us can scan the veldt in comfort, remembering to look through the bushes, not at them.

The endangered black rhino is faring better in Namibia than elsewhere in Africa, having increased its numbers due to the conservation efforts of hard-working agencies striving to educate people and to protect the beleaguered animals from being slaughtered for their horns.

It’s a good start to the late fall day, a day quickly turning as rosy as the rosy-faced lovebirds we had seen in the acacia trees the previous night.

We’re only five minutes from our first waterhole but we don’t make it. Hugging the fringes of the dirt road on the next corner, we encounter a serious roadblock: a dozen elephants.

“Shhhh!” Gaseb cautions as he pulls to the side behind several other vehicles.

The behemoths clump toward us.

The small vehicle ahead is resoundly slapped by the leader’s trunk, a wary matriarch checking out potential threats.

Another warning from Gaseb: “Don’t move or they’ll come and investigate.”

This is early in our safari adventure and we have yet to view rhinos and giraffes congregating at the floodlit waterhole at Etosha’s southern gate.
