Chambers renovation cost too rich for council Travis Paterson News Staff

What started as a desire to introduce live webcasting of Saanich council sessions led to a staff proposal for a $487,450 renovation to remodel chambers. Council rejected the recommendation and asked for a new proposal with better detail and pricing options. “It’s a very well done proposal and staff did a great job, but I think at this time it’s too expensive for what we want,” said Mayor Richard Attwell. “What stood out for me is the [$48,000]

Replacement playground on parents’ wishlist PAC raising funds for new playground at Torquay elementary Jacob Zinn News Staff

Parents and teachers of students at Torquay elementary are hoping to replace the school’s aging playground – but first, they need to raise more than $30,000. Earlier this month, the Gordon Head school’s parent advisory council received a letter from the school district, saying the playground was going to be removed in the near future. The PAC has set aside about $17,000 to fund a new structure, but that’s a fair bit short of the $50,000 price tag on even a basic playground. “We’re in a situation where after Christmas, that playground there will probably be gone and there won’t be a new playground there to replace it,” said parent Jasmine Haere. “Just to get the design and the drawings to be approved is $4,000,” said PAC treasurer Lou Douillard. “Just to get the woodchips for an area like that, as a base layer, is $10,000. It just gives you an idea of how quickly things get eaten up before you even have a structure in place.” According to Haere, the PAC has been raising money for a new playground over the last few years, after realizing the Greater Victoria school district doesn’t cover playground equipment. They’ve held fundraisers through Victoria Royals games, spring fairs and donation drives to try to afford the new playground in anticipation of the old one’s removal. But despite three years of fundraising, they said the letter snuck up on them. “We thought we had a bit more time,” said Douillard. While the current structure appears sturdy, viceprincipal Leann Trenchard said the principal took a closer look at it with the grounds and maintenance crew and realized it’s due to be torn down. “There are things that are rotting that are underneath with the supports,” said Trenchard. “She did say it’s definitely in its last days.” In preparation, Trenchard said the school has conducted a few focus groups with students, parents and teachers as to what they would like to see in the new

Torquay Elementary is about $30,000 shy of replacing one of its playgrounds, which is due to be torn down any day. The Gordon Head school’s PAC has already raised $17,000 and hopes to come up with the rest of the money to build a new playground before the next school year. made out to the Greater Victoria school district. Additionally, the PAC has started a crowdfunding campaign on CanadaHelps, an online platform for donating and fundraising online. While in-person donations are preferred, both methods can issue tax receipts to people who donate more than $20. The school is also able to pick up donations if donors can’t drop them off. structure. “We involved the kids last year, looking at some features that they would like,” she said. “We have lots of ideas, and we’re just waiting to go forward with some of them.” Trenchard said the new playground isn’t just for the students during recess and lunchtime – it’s for everybody. “Our grounds are really utilized by the community – we’ve got a great field out there,” she said. “The whole community benefits.” Torquay Elementary is accepting cheque donations

Definition of delegation stirs debate for Saanich council Travis Paterson News Staff

When 11-year-old Gordon Head resident Jillian McCue approached Saanich as a delegation regarding the allowance of backyard goats in May, council referred her to the advisory committees. But when Livinia Rojas presented as a delegation about putting deer-friendly plant species in Mount Douglas Park, council was mum. Yet when David Poje twice presented as a delegation, regarding

the tree cutting on Watkins Way and the parking ban on Glendenning Road, it stirred council debate and a direction to staff to prepare a report on the latter. On Monday, council debated the effectiveness of the new 10-minute delegation opportunity for representatives of organizations to speak to council. The debate lasted nearly an hour and will come back to council in a 2016 report with greater detail. “Certainly our delegations are starting to slip to what the mayor says is more

appropriate for an open forum,” said Coun. Vic Derman. Coun. Colin Plant suggested delegations be limited to two or more people but Coun. Susan Brice made the argument that if the Red Cross (for example) was to send one person to represent them at council, that is in fact the definition of a delegate. “I’ve been traditionally critical of committees, that they don’t forward things to council, and I think it’s important to make sure council can

hear these things,” said Mayor Richard Atwell. “But the basic problem is people are coming and asking things to be done, and it hasn’t gone through an advisory committee.” Council adopted some other changes with the public input. The monthly open forum has been moved to the beginning of council, following multiple situations where residents waited through four hours of council to bring forward their issue. reporter@saanichnews.com

Notice to Saanich Residents Garbage Collection Day Change Collection days change in December and January. Check your schedule carefully. Garbage and Organics are collected on all statutory holidays with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. To accommodate this, collection days vary in December and are adjusted for the new year.

It took five years but Glanford middle school student Maya Saini has turned a mega collection of pop can tabs into a second-hand wheelchair. Last week 12-yearold Saini filled the back of her mom’s SUV with several bags of aluminium pop and beer can tabs, a collection she’d been building since she was seven. They traded them in to William’s Scrap Iron and Metals for more than $60. With another $44 worth of bottle returns, Saini was able to negotiate the purchase of a perfectly usable wheelchair for $100 from The Right Price. “It started with me hearing you could buy a second-hand wheelchair for someone who needed it,” Saini said. “I had also heard you could return pop can tabs.” First, she had to train her two older brothers and parents to retain all tabs from the recycling. Removing the tabs resulted in plenty of cuts and scrapes for all. Soon, friends were

contributing as well. Her mom posted a notice at work and coworkers were bringing tabs from home. On Dec. 7, Saini delivered the chair to the Fisher Building of the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health. “At only 12 years old, Saini has the heart of a philanthropist,” said QA spokesperson Jessica Woollard. “Thanks to her dedication and compassion, a child will have access to a wheelchair, and all those who hear her story will see the good that comes from supporting people in their community.” Saini, it should be noted, has already moved onto new projects. She’s enrolling in the Me to We charity leadership program (which helps bring clean water and empowerment to struggling villages in developing countries) through Glanford and is part of the school’s successful zinc campaign. Glanford is collecting batteries for their zinc, which is reclaimed and used to supplement the lacking nutritional diet of people in developing countries. The school gathered 270 pounds in one week. Batteries can be dropped off at Glanford middle school.

New Democrat MPs from Vancouver Island are calling on the federal minister of infrastructure and communities to allow BC Ferries to access grants under the New Building Canada Fund. “BC Ferries is a critical transportation link for Island residents but years of dramatic fare increases have had a devastating impact on our coastal communities,” said Victoria MP Murray Rankin. “The coastal ferry system is a key transportation link like roads and bridges and should be treated the same

when it comes to federal infrastructure grants.” The NDP wants BC Ferries to be able to access grants to fund capital projects like terminals and new vessels, which should allow the corporation to lower costs and in turn pass on savings through lower fares. “The former Conservative government stood by while ferry fares skyrocketed for Island residents. We are reaching out to this new government and asking them to demonstrate an understanding

of the challenges facing our coastal communities,” said Rankin. Seven New Democrat MPs from Vancouver Island and the North Coast have signed the letter to Minister Amarjeet Sohi, including: Rankin, Nathan Cullen (Skeena-Bulkey Valley), Rachel Blaney (North Island-Powell River), Randall Garrison (Esquimalt-SaanichSooke), Gord Johns (Courtenay-Alberni), Alistair MacGregor (Cowichan-MalahatLangford) and Sheila Malcolmson (Nanaimo-Ladysmith).

Camosun nets funds for newcomer language training Provincial funding will help Camosun College provide English language training for newcomers to Victoria who are looking for work in highdemand jobs. Camosun received $210,992 in provincial funding to provide training for recent immigrants to help them overcome language barriers faced when seeking employment in the construction, engineering and health sectors, as well as other career and professional occupations. “Camosun College is extremely pleased to receive this important funding to provide essential English language training to those new to Canada,” said

Camosun College president Sherri Ball. The training will prepare participants for employment in an industry, sector or occupation that is currently experiencing, or is expected to experience, a labour or skills shortage over the next 12 months. “These students come to our programs with previous education and work experience from their home countries,” said Ball. “Camosun will provide them with improved communication skills, skills to plan their occupational goals, a better understanding of Canadian business culture and the B.C. labour market.”

Total funding of $2.6 million is being provided across the province to help an estimated 1,200 newcomers to B.C. get language training for the job market. “We want to give new British Columbians the support they need as they settle into their new home and find employment to support their families,” said Shirley Bond, minister of jobs, tourism and skills training. “The best thing we can do is make sure they have the skills they need to take advantage of the tremendous job market here in British Columbia and this funding will help make that happen.”

Fast facts n B.C. is on the verge of a demographic tipping point. For the first time, there will be fewer young people entering the workforce than older people leaving it. n About one-third of immigrants say they are employed at a lower level than they were in their country of origin. n The Project Based Language Training program is aimed at helping newcomers with professional-level skills overcome language barriers so they can get employed in high-demand jobs.

Getting into the spirit of the season of giving For many organizations, this is the make or break time of the year, when they collect a large percentage of the money they need to keep operating throughout the year. The amount that will be donated across Canada is amazing. According to Imagine Canada, a national umbrella group for charities, the six weeks leading up to Christmas account for 40 per cent of all charitable donations made in 2015. Six in 10 Canadians will donate and this year’s holiday giving is expected to hit $5 billion, bringing total gifts to charities and nonprofits to about $13 billion for the entire year. That is a lot of cash, but what really stands out is that 60 per cent of us are willing to share their good fortune with others. That is impressive, and clearly a positive sign for the future and an indication that Canadians see this time of year as a chance to strengthen their communities in ways that are important to them. Fancy cars, expensive clothes, fine dining and exotic vacations are all great ways to spend your hard-earned dollars. And there is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself for a job well done, but helping others can be its own reward, a source of personal optimism and satisfaction. But with so many deserving groups needing support, both financial and otherwise, it can be hard to decide. One of the key strategies Imagine Canada recommends is to align your gift with your passion. When making a donation, consider the sort of world you want to build and work with charitable organizations that reflect your ideals. That advice goes well for another type of giving. Helping fill an organization’s financial coffers is important, but many of these groups are as short of volunteers as they are funds. Without the contribution of volunteers, many groups – schools, hospitals, community organizations, sports programs – would not be able to function. Giving your time can be one of your most valuable contributions over the holiday season. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-3862624. Subdivision could jeopardize sensitive wildlife habitat At the conclusion of the previous council’s tenure the municipality invested $690,000 to purchase the park and wetland areas just north of the eastern tip of King’s Pond in Cedar Hill Park. It was a commendable decision arrived at in co-operation with the municipality and community members who love this park. The new park area provides additional protection and breeding ground for hundreds of migratory and resident waterfowl as well as small mammals and amphibians and enhances the enjoyment for thousands of visitors to Cedar Hill Park. There is now a proposal before mayor and council to approve a panhandle subdivision lot immediately across the road on a high rocky bluff. Besides being Garry oak and wildlife habitat, this rocky outcrop is a substantial part of the watershed that feeds directly into King’s Pond. The subdivision proposal involves the removal of 50 dump truck loads of blasted rock to accommodate a 3,000 square-foot house. You do not have to be a hydrologist to know that blasting tons of rock will seriously affect the water flow and aquifers on the hillside that directly feeds the wetland area across the road. Environmental degradation and disruption of the

After spending over a half million in tax dollars to enhance the park it is absolutely ludicrous to expect council to approve a panhandle subdivision that could potentially destroy the very wetland ecosystem it has just spent so much effort and money protecting. Campaign promise fulfilled Saner heads at Saanich council have prevailed and the Alberg farm has received final approval for a beautiful development. All the credit goes to Coun. The problem you are concerned about is troubled people, whose numbers seem to be increasing with more teaching of anti-human ideas by schools and activists. Note that crime is lower in jurisdictions that have fewer restrictions on ownership of guns, because criminal wannabes know their victims are likely to fight back. Why do you make such a fundamental error? Do you believe the Plato-Kant-Marx ideological lineage that denies the capability of the human mind and the life-fostering feedback from proper behaviour toward others and self? The Capital Regional District avoided a potentially “disastrous” public consultation regarding the sewage treatment plant, according to Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins. Last week, the Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee voted to postpone public consultation for the proposed sewage treatment plant options over concerns more information needed to be provided. Cost estimates for the plant range from $1 billion to $1.3 billion. “The reality was, when we got down to it, there was a lot of confusion on the numbers, and if we’re confused at the table, we can’t expect the public to be asked to weigh in on the information and be able to give us their clear thoughts,” Desjardins said, adding the cost allocation formula and allocation of grants were “problematic.” “We need to do this right. We know we’re in a time crunch but this would have, in my mind, been a disastrous public consultation process because the public wouldn’t necessarily have been able to respond to what it is we’re looking for.” Last month, the committee revealed five options for the plant, including a one-plant option in Rock Bay, Victoria; a two-plant option with a centralized plant at Rock Bay and a facility in Colwood; a four-plant sub-regional option with facilities in Rock Bay, Esquimalt Nation, Colwood and East Saanich; and a seven-plant option with facilities in Langford, Colwood, View Royal, Esquimalt, Rock Bay and Saanich core and east Saanich; and an option that is tertiary. Victoria Mayor and chair of the committee Lisa Helps said when consultation commences, hopefully in mid-January, the committee will get a better idea of what is important to the public. “We’re not asking the public to choose any options, we’re asking the public to give us more information at this point of the process to help us make decisions going forward,” she said. “It may come back that cost is the most important thing and so that would lead us down one path . . . An option six or an option seven could emerge that no one thought of. But through public input, we might come up with something even better and we’re certainly open to that.” Directors instructed staff to come back with more information on topics such as costs, water flow, and solid waste recovery in the new year. Helps said she’s not sure if the setback will delay the project, but noted if the committee wants to extend the timeline of the project, it must be approved by the CRD board. The CRD has until March 2016 to submit a plan for the project in order to receive $253 million in federal funding.

Nursery rhymes take on life of their own St. Luke’s Players bringing Mother Goose pantomime to the stage Jacob Zinn News Staff

Jacob Zinn/News Staff

Christopher Harris (centre) stars as Mother Goose in the production of the same name by the St. Luke’s Players, opening tonight at the St. Luke’s Hall. The 10th annual pantomime draws on popular fairy tales and nursery rhymes, and is filled with musical numbers, local references and jokes for both kids and adults.

It looks like the St. Luke’s Players pantomime is still the most popular of the community theatre group’s annual productions. Tickets for Mother Goose – this year’s wild tale that draws from dozens of classic fairy tales – have already sold out for the 13 volunteer-run performances. St. Luke’s 10th annual pantomime is set to open tonight (Dec. 18), with thrills ensured for theatre fans of all ages. “It’s great for the young kids and it’s great for the parents,” said Dave Hitchcock, who’s co-directing the play alongside Merry Hallsor.

“There’s a level of humour that appeals to the kids, and there’s a level of humour that sometimes the kids don’t understand but the adults do.” The plot of Mother Goose takes bits and pieces from a broad range of children’s works, tying together characters like Little Bo Peep and the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland into a lively and hilarious stage production. “It’s like all pantomimes – it’s based on a well-known story, very loosely,” said Hitchcock. “In this case, Mother Goose is based on the old woman who lived in a shoe and she had so many children she didn’t know what to do. “All her children are nursery rhyme characters. We have Jack and Jill, Little Boy Blue, Little Miss Muffet – all the familiar ones.” As with many children’s stories, Mother Goose is a tale of good versus evil: the Chancellor attempts to evict the title character and her children from their shoe by raising taxes so he can build a sewage treatment plant on their property. However, the family goose, Priscilla, turns out to be “the goose that laid the golden egg,” suddenly making Mother Goose rich enough to afford staying in Gooselandia. The Chancellor then schemes with his henchmen (aptly named Hook and Crook) to steal the goose for themselves. “It contains all of the ingredients that we’ve come to expect in a pantomime,” said Hitchcock. “There’s lots of singing and dancing and jokes and local references – and audience participation. They’re required to boo the bad guys and cheer the good guys. They invite the kids up onstage at one point to help sing a song and do the actions. “There are chases through the audience, as well, with the actors. The audience is very much a part of the production.” The show has been about two-and-a-half months in the making, with the production’s 23 cast members and 30-something crew members rehearsing three nights a week in the leadup to opening night. Hitchcock said there may be some butterflies in a few stomachs, but he expects those to go away when the spotlight comes on. “There’s a feeling of anxiety about how it’s going to go, but as soon as you get onstage and hear the audience, it’s a great feeling,” he said. “You get so much feedback that it gets the adrenaline rush going. It’s great.” Mother Goose runs from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2 at St. Luke’s Hall, located at 3821 Cedar Hill Cross Rd. The St. Luke’s Players will perform at 7.30 p.m. on Dec. 18, 21 to 23, 28, 29 and Jan. 2, as well as at 2 p.m. during matinees on Dec. 19, 20, 26, 27, Jan. 1 and 2. SAANICH NEWS - Friday, December 18, 2015

Dash cams at top of motorist gift lists filled with techno gadgets Santa will doubtless be dashing about delivering dash cams by the dozen, as they are top of many gift wish lists this year. Most people see the onboard cameras, which continuously record the driver’s view of the road through the windshield, as a great way of gathering video evidence in the event of a collision. Internet websites featuring often hair-raising video of dramatic crashes are drawing viewers in their millions. Thousands of eyewitness videos featuring car crashes, narrow escapes, and even staged crashes designed to commit insurance fraud have been uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and dash cam dedicated websites. The cheapest units start from as little as $30 but as is always the case with technology, you only get what you pay for. Testing by the Driveway team shows that for less than $100, you can get a serviceable camera for your car. However, if you want to install a more by Keith Morgan sophisticated version that records such information as date/time, speed, G-forces and location then get ready to spend more than $200. Yours truly bought a BlackVue DR3500-Full HD system, which retails for more than $400. I would recommend it for commercial fleets and people like me who want to record trips for editing into vacation videos or, in my case, test car video reports. Rick Francouer, president of 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford, customized mine for easy and quick installation in different test vehicles. He recommends that no matter what the unit costs professional installation is advisable to ensure it doesn’t fail when you need it. “We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of people, of all ages and all walks of life, installing systems, and the reason is simple, there are so many acts of stupidity on the road every day, protecting yourself with a visual record of your good driving habits is important in disputes with other drivers or your insurance agency. “We have dozens of clients who have made a $300 investment that’s paid tens of thousands in dividends when they are able to prove innocence in a disputed accident. In many jurisdictions, visual evidence is preferable to spoken testimony.” ICBC spokesman Joanna Linsangan admits dash cams provide useful information but cautions drivers do not to rely too much on footage as it’s not admissible as evidence in court. “We will take a look at anything that drivers can provide in evi-

dence and every once a while we do see dash cam footage. But this technology is susceptible to manipulation and provides only a narrow view.” A written report on such things as weather conditions and all circumstances are still extremely important when filing a claim. While looking at dashcams we came across some other techno gadgets in demand which last minute gift shoppers might want to consider. Older cars are rarely designed to power today’s smart phones and MP3 players through USB ports. Even late models may only have one USB plug in. Rocketek Canada is one of many brands now selling high output adaptors that use cigarette lighter slots to supply power to devices such as GPS Navigation unit. For under $20, it plugs into the lighter slot and duplicates it, providing two slots for devices to draw direct power plus two additional USB slots. I’ve used mine around the world with great success, enabling me to run mobile navigation devices and

play my iPod through audio systems via the Auxiliary Input point. Factory installed navigation systems can add thousands to your new car’s sticker price. Your local electronics warehouse of choice will put you on the road with a guidance unit for less than $200. Two more ideas. There are no shortage of books for auto enthusiasts but if you are looking for a fun read try Driven Mind by Garry Sowerby, who along with his wife Lisa Calvi occasionally appears in these pages. Garry is an ‘adventure driver’ and his book records 50 great stories about his road trips around the world (Published by Odyssey International ISBN 978-0-9733358-1-1 at $20 - http://adventuredrive. ca/drivenmind). Finally, driving shoes. Yes, there is such a thing and I have three pairs. Watch for a more detailed analysis of their value to everyday drivers in the New Year but check out these beauties now. Piloti has a large range selling for around $150 but these Luxury Mille shoes are to die for at $400 a pair.

St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church is putting on its own production of Barbara Robinson’s bookturned-TV-movie, a hilarious and heartwarming story about six delinquent children who join a local nativity play, to the dismay of some traditional churchgoers. The 46-volunteer show marks the kickoff to St. Dunstan’s 50th anniversary celebration and is one of the bigger productions the church has put on in recent memory. “We started off in September sort of rusty and now we’re nearly up to Broadway standards,” said Gillian Millam of St. Dunstan’s with a chuckle. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is a play within a play, about a church that has cast the same people for the same roles of its yearly nativity

production. The woman who runs the show every year breaks her leg, with the responsibility shifting to Grace Bradley, a single mother of two who has to make sure everything runs smoothly. But, as usual, not everything goes as planned. “At the first rehearsal, there’s mention of this family called the Herdmans – they’re the worst kids in the neighbourhood and they’re all sort of rebellious,” said Millam. “They hear about Sunday school and that they’ll get treats and that there’s money about, so they start going to Sunday school. “They turn up and they take over the pageant. They bully all the other kids and so the Herdmans become Mary and Joseph. It’s really about them going through the stages of understanding nativity and then the final production of the pageant.” Millam said the show provides a modern twist to your typical church production while maintaining that traditional nature of the standard nativity scene. St. Dunstan’s even has a choir to sing carols alongside the scene. “You’ve got the comedy and you’ve got some traditional bits with a bit of an edge,” she said. “There’s one-liners for the adults, there’s drama for the kids. It hits the mark for everybody.” Director Carolyn Stephenson, whose family has been attending St. Dunstan’s for the last 48 years, said putting on the production has been a group effort. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is, “more or less,” her directorial debut, and she credits the hard work of such congregation members as voice coach Eileen Cooper, set designer Judi McKenzie and the Rev. Canon John Steele’s wife Franciane for making it possible. “Everyone has been very dedicated – they’ve all worked extremely hard,” said Stephenson. “This is quite a new thing for me to be directing and I’m very grateful that I have other people helping with that side of it.” The congregation has performances scheduled for Dec. 19, 20 and 24 – one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the evening – with admission by donation. Half of the money raised will go to outreach programs while the other half will go to a fund to sponsor a refugee family from Syria in the Gordon Head area. Additionally, the church will have a bake sale after the performances to contribute to the fundraiser. St. Dunstan’s hosts shows on Dec. 19 at 2 p.m., Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. and Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. The church is located at 1806 San Juan Ave. For more information, call the church at 250-472-1172 or email stdunstan@bc.anglican.ca. jacob.zinn@saanichnews.com

Wunderkind martial art sisters Kiana and Zena Shew led the Victoria Bulldogs school wrestling team with gold medals at the recent Cougar Invite at Frances Kelsey in Mill Bay. The home-schooled Shews won two of the Bulldogs’ five gold medals at the Cougar Invite. Kiana won hers in the junior girls 35- to 40-kilogram class and Zena in the girls 31 to 32 kgs. The other three came from Ecole Victor Brodeur students Sekou Tatem in the junior boys 50 to 55 kgs, Ivory Tatem in the elementary 40 to 43 kgs and Sara Vanderhasselt in the elementary 30 to 33 kgs. Oak Bay’s Kaitlyn Kiddell was second among junior girls in

the 67-72 kgs, while Reynolds secondary’s Khaya Mackillop (independent) was second in the senior girls 60 to 63 kgs. “We took six wrestlers and won five gold, that’s incredible,” said Ed Ashmore, longtime coach of the Bulldogs. The octogenarian was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in October. He recently fell and cracked his collar bone but is able to instruct the wrestlers with his left hand, he said. “There was a time I could do one-arm chin-ups,” he joked. The Bulldogs wrestling team has existed in different forms for all five decades Ashmore has coached it, and is currently a joint district school team open to students from SD 61 and 63. Following the Cougar Invite, three of the Bulldogs competed at the Dec. 11 War on the Floor, hosted at Simon Fraser University. Zena earned gold while wrestling up one weight class,

winning all three matches. But it was an eye opener for Kiana, who also went up a weight class and finished fifth. “They were just too big and strong for [Kiana],” Ashmore said. Sekou Tatem also went to SFU, finishing seventh in the senior men’s 51 kgs. “I’m glad he could go. I think it was an excellent thing to do for all three going to that tournament, reminding [Kiana and Sekou] they may be able to beat everyone on the Island, but not the Mainland.” Reynolds’ Khaya Mackillop was third in the senior girls 64 kgs. Upcoming in the new year is the Western Canada Age Class in Richmond, Jan. 22-23, followed by the Alberni Armarda Invitational, Feb. 5-6. The Island wrestling championships are Feb. 13-14 at Cowichan secondary and the B.C. High School Championships are Feb. 25-27 in Abbotsford.

Saanich Fire is asking residents to follow a few fire-safety precautions before stringing up the lights and tucking presents under the tree. “During the holidays, decorative trees and lighting are a major cause of fires, damaging property, endangering lives and upsetting seasonal celebrations,” said Saanich Fire Chief Michael Burgess. “These fires can easily be prevented by inspecting equipment and practising fire safety.” According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, holiday trees are involved in about 400 fires annually, resulting in 20 deaths, 70 injuries and an average of more than $15 million in property loss and damage. Avoid turning celebration into tragedy by practising the following holiday fire safety tips: Inspect light strings and ensure plugs are clean with no loose wires. Plug lights directly into outlets and limit use of extension cords. Ensure cords and wires are far away from heat sources and flammable materials. Place holiday trees away from ignition sources including fireplaces, portable heaters and baseboard heaters. Keep fresh cut trees moist by watering daily. Dispose of fresh trees properly as soon as seasonal celebrations finish. Place candles in candle holders and keep them away from trees, children and flammable materials. Fully extinguish candles before leaving the room. Always attend cooking and keep an eye on the range during holiday meal preparation. Set timers as a reminder to check food. Keep fireplaces clean and only burn seasoned wood. Recycle wrapping materials and dispose of ashes in a nonflammable container.

Creating the perfect blend of spices has become a labour of love for Daksha Narsing. Every day, Narsing and her husband Bhaskar set off to their warehouse in Saanichton to sort through pounds of spices, including cumin seeds, red chillie powder, black and white peppercorns, coriander and garam masala, imported from around the world. First, Narsing cleans the spices by putting them into giant sifters to get rid of stones and sticks. Then she puts the spices on trays to be sorted into jars. Bhaskar is responsible for grinding them to create 13 different blends to be used for Indianinspired meals. It’s a long process that has become methodical for the Saanich resident. It is also the same process that her grandmother taught her when she was a child. Narsing grew up in Africa and attended boarding school in India for two years. During the holidays, she would spend time with her grandmother, who was the naturopath physician in a village in Gujarat, India. Narsing and her grandmother would go to the village market where she taught her to buy spices by tasting and smelling them – the same way one would buy fruits and vegetables. “We would go to the market and she would taste or smell for example the cinnamon bark or the cloves or the peppers and by looking at them – that they’re clean and the peppers are plump,” she said. “I basically learned how to cook all the way down to how to pluck and cook the chicken.” By the age of 10, she was cooking full meals including vegetable curry with roti and chutney. Over the years, her love for cooking grew and after a stint in London and Williams Lake, Narsing and her family moved to Victoria in 2010, opening Daksha’s Gourmet Spices. For Narsing, the most rewarding part of cooking is creating new dishes for people to enjoy. “I really love doing it, I find it the most satisfying,” she said. Now, Narsing has released her fifth cookbook, Daksha’s Gourmet Kitchen — Indian Fusion Cuisine, with roughly 100 recipes featuring a mixture of old and new meal ideas. Recipes include butter chicken pizza, lamb linguini, spicy breaded chicken, spicy kale chips and chai panna cotta. Some of the recipes are gluten and dairy free or vegetarian as well. The cookbook is available at Munroe’s Books and Bolen Books in Victoria and online at spicesgourmet.com.

Saanich construction firm nets commercial award Speed Street’s Brizo 19 named best new condo Travis Paterson News Staff

A pair of Mike Geric Construction projects were recognized for their innovation and community contribution at the Victoria Real Estate Board’s Commercial Building Awards earlier this month. Though Geric generally builds within the boundaries of Saanich, its 606 Speed St. (Victoria) development, Brizo 19, was named the best in the condominium/new construction category. It beat out Geric’s major development underway in Royal Oak, the Travino, a finalist in the same category. “We’re a growing company with a lot of exciting projects on the go, so it’s wonderful to take a moment and celebrate some recent achievements,” said Ed Geric, president of Mike Geric Construction. Brizo 19 was completed in 2014, a 19-unit, low-rise building that uses wood construction that sits about one block south of Saanich on Speed Street, off of Douglas Street. It’s four storeys high with three townhomes and 16 condo units of studios and two bedroom, plus den. All sold in the $200,000 to $300,000 range. SAANICH NEWS - Wednesday, December 18, 2015

A Wish for You... As we prepare for the 2016 opening of our second Victoria location, QF View Royal, it’s an opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to the many Vancouver Island people who make up local trades, businesses, friends and of course loyal customers. You have enabled us to evolve from a single store in Qualicum Beach to becoming a well-rooted part of many communities on Vancouver Island and Powell River, where we are fortunate to work, play and raise our families. Wherever we can, we rely on the talent from these very communities to help us get where we’re going as we continue to work at creating fresh, interesting and inviting shopping experiences, not only in our new stores, but by upgrading and renovating existing stores in 2015, such as Northridge Village, Nanoose Bay and more.
