There’s a “different feeling” around Maple Ridge Firehall No.1 on Christmas Day, said firefighter Rob Macdonald.

And Macdonald should know.

He’s been with the fire department “off and on” as a career firefighter for the past 11 years, and is no stranger to suiting up for work on a day most people are at home with loved ones.

But, Macdonald said, working on Dec. 25 is nothing out of the ordinary for him.

“It’s what we signed up for when we took the job,” he explained.

“It’s not a surprise to us when we’re scheduled for that day.”

And he’s not the only one in the Macdonald household answering the Christmas Day call of duty.

Macdonald’s wife is with the RCMP and is no stranger to working on the holiday either.

“Being that she’s in the field, she’s quite understanding when I work, and I understand when she works,” he said.

“It actually rotates next year, where she’s working and I’m off, so it’s just how it ends up being.”

And the ability to work rotating shifts is a good thing, especially now that there’s a small child in the picture: the couple have a twoyear-old son.

And while raising a child does change the household dynamic, Macdonald said, a sense of what mom and dad do is already apparent in their young boy.

“The big thing with our child is to just make sure he’s aware of why mom or dad won’t be home,”

he said.

“He’s a big supporter of our jobs, even at that age.”

Their son “loves the fire truck, and he loves seeing police cars.

“He understands when I go to work what I’m doing, so I think that that’s really important, that he understands why we’re not home on Christmas.”

Not that their child is left alone or anything.

“My wife and I work opposites, so that’s what makes it work with the child,” he said. “There’s always somebody home with him.”

And the couple make it work year-to-year, based on their schedules.

This year, Macdonald is working the 10-hour day shift at the firehall, “so we’ll try and celebrate [Christmas] early in the morning before I go to work, and then I’ll catch up with dinner when I get home.”

And Christmas day at the firehall is something in itself as well, he added.

“Guys here are pretty close and describe the fire service as their other family,” Macdonald explained.

“It’s typically the same type of feeling you would have at home, just that feeling of it being a holiday.”

In fact, over the years, some shifts have been known to cook a turkey dinner as part of the workday.

“One of the years, we cooked a big turkey here, and we had the paramedics and the police come who were working as well,” he said.

“It was really neat to have that, and it’s really important for us as front-line responders to maintain that relationship; we’re all out here for the same purpose.”

As for Christmas day call-outs, every year is different, but “it’s typically a quieter day.”

Macdonald sees the bright side of working the holiday as well.

“There’s a lot of professions where you don’t get that opportunity, where you’re away, and don’t even get to be around for Christmas,” he said. “I think we’re all pretty humbled here to know that although we are working, we’re pretty grateful that we’re able to still be here in the community.”

All invited to community dinner on Christmas Eve The ACT is open to everyone on Thursday night.

It can be the most loneliest time of the year for people who don’t have company at Christmas.

That’s why the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Christmas Haven community supper, open to anyone from 6 to 9 p.m. at The ACT on Dec. 24, is so important, and garners so much support.

The event celebrates its 18th year on Thursday evening, organizers claim.

The Christmas Haven is 100 per cent volunteer driven, operated by a steering committee chaired by Alyson Cuthbertson, and is made possible through community donations.

“The whole premise is you don’t have to be alone at Christmas and if you want company, enjoy dinner, see local entertainment, and visit with Santa, and if this makes your day a little bit brighter, we encourage you to come join us,” Cuthbertson said.

A great time was had by all at the 2014 Christmas Haven dinner, which welcomed 289 guests to The ACT last Christmas Eve. Cuthbertson’s family comes along with her to the dinner. This year, two will volunteer as security, one as Santa’s elf, and another will put together the Santa pictures.

Each patron gets a picture with Santa, taken and printed on site, to take it away with them.

An expected 300 people will be treated to turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce, all put together by a group lead

The event wouldn’t be possible if not for the generosity of the community, according to Cuthbertson.

“In June, we send out donation letters to donors in the community, and we had 100 per cent return, which means those who donated last year donated again this year,” she said.

The payoff for those who donate and volunteer is the joy the dinner brings to others.

Time to reflect on home

W

hen we think about Christmas, we mostly think about the plans we’ll have to make, the frantic preparations, the travel to visit family, the even more stressful travel to the shopping centre.

We think of the bills that will arrive in the next month, about the difficulties of finding gifts for some loved ones, (“I swear, I don’t need anything this year. Anything you get me will be fine”) and about making sure the turkey is defrosted in time for stuffing.

But there is a wonderful time, usually just after Christmas and before New Year’s, when many of us have a few extra days off work. The presents are opened, the turkey has become leftovers, and the emails and calls from work demanding our attention have slowed to a trickle, or even stopped.

This time, which starts on Christmas Day and if we’re lucky can run for a week or so, is truly one of the best times of the year. We have time to reflect on the good things of the season and of the year that has just passed.

We have time to think about our plans for the year to come – not just the endless run of daily activities that we will have to schedule, but our larger hopes and goals, for ourselves and for those special to us.

This is the great Christmas lull, a time of contemplation (and eggnog, and turkey sandwiches, and reheated stuffing).

This year, we urge our readers to really enjoy what time they have, whether it’s a single afternoon or a week or two of relatively quiet, unplanned bliss. Go for a walk or a hike, play with those new toys and tools you found under the tree, or just sit back and read a good book for a solid hour or two. Maybe revel in the fact that we live in British Columbia by going for a bike ride or playing a round of golf. Head out to see a movie with the kids – I hear there’s something called Star Wars in the theatres that’s not bad.

Our daily lives are often so busy that we are constantly thinking about the next dozen or so things we have to get done, keeping us from enjoying what we’re doing right now. This Christmas, slow down, take it all in, and have a happy holiday season.

Her school principal and counsellors have been read in on the situation, but it’s seldom she even goes to class.

“Our whole family is consumed by this, and involved in this,” Mom shared. “We all love her, and we’re all trying to get through to her.”

They’re aghast by the horrible transformation their “sweet” daughter and sister has taken at the hands of prescription drug, and they feel helpless.

Her parents reached out and asked for help from all types of support groups, health agencies, and professionals. While “everyone has been very supportive,” Mom said they have yet to find a solution.

This young lady – like so many other youth – needs help now, before it’s too late.

Unfortunately, she is classified by the medical system as an adult capable of deciding her own fate. That means there’s little her parents can do to get her help.

She has to want it. And like almost every teenager, this young lady thinks herself invincible. And like most addicts, she doesn’t believe she has a problem.

All I ask is that you think about this imprisoned local family when you’re opening gifts on Christmas Day, or you’re sitting down to a feast with family.

Realize how lucky we are. And realize that something needs to change. Join me in asking for this Christmas wish.

This is not the first local family, nor the last, that is fighting such an ugly battle with drugs – prescription or otherwise.

In fact, this community has way too many such cases. Addiction is rampant in town, and there is never enough resources directed at the problem.

In fact, as I write this column, another reported overdose is reported on the scanner. There is barely a day that goes by when I don’t hear our emergency responders being called to another such case.

As this one mother said, “it’s an epidemic” in this community that has to stop before it claims more lives.

Amelia Norrie says it takes a special kind of person to ring bells next to a Salvation Army kettle in the wet and the cold over the holiday season.

The public relations coordinator with the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows knows firsthand about the kind of sacrifices necessary for the annual holiday program: she did a trio of two-hour shifts herself last week, including one with her five-year-old boy standing by her side.

“They are amazing, kindhearted people,” Norrie said, about local “bell ringers,” a.k.a. kettle campaign volunteers.

“They are the sort of people who are visible in our community, who are out there doing the jobs that people don’t want to do,” Norrie added. “Standing out in the cold and the rain is miserable – it takes a certain character to do that.”

Regarding the Christmas Kettle campaign, Darrell Pilgrim, executive director of the Salvation Army Ridge Meadows, said, “Once again this year, people have supported us and in return supported people in the community needing help, and we want to thank them all for their service and support.”

He continued, “It’s not about helping us; it’s about helping others. They have helped us to help others. It encourages us to keep providing the best service we can to our community.”

a change to date, especially from last year to this year. Our fundraising is up this year so if anything, we’re seeing an increase in our support.”

As early as Dec. 26, when the gifts have been unwrapped and the relatives have left, your Christmas tree probably won’t look as green and full as it did a few weeks prior.

When it comes time to throw away the driedup tree, there are some options.

Starting on Dec. 27 until the end of January, Meadows Landscape Supply Recycling Yard will take old trees by-donation, with proceeds being split 50/50 between Pitt Meadows Lions Club, and Girl Guides. On Jan. 9 and 10, both groups will be on site, with donuts and coffee for those who donate.

On Jan. 2 and 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., parents at Harry Hooge Elementary will taking trees to fundraise for phase two of the schools new playground.

Family sponsoring a team effort The neighbours of 236 B Street joined efforts to bring a hamper family a merrier Christmas.

Eight years ago, Stacey Mostrenko recruited her neighbours to join her family and sponsor a hamper family through the Good Neighbour Program and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society.

On Sunday – in what has become a Christmas tradition for the block of 236 B Street – 12 neighbourhood families divided into teams and went door-todoor in search of empty bottles.

“Everyone has come to expect that we do this every year,” Stacey said.

On Sunday, the group collected $1,300 in bottles, beating their previous record of $1,200 from eight years ago.

Stacey and her husband, Liam Mostrenko, started sponsoring a family 10 years ago, but has since teamed up

with their neighbours in West Maple Ridge for 8 years.

The Good Neighbour Program connects donors with an anonymous registered family through the hamper.

The donor is given general details about each family member such as age, clothing sizes and interests, and asked to spend $75 to $100 on gifts that meet each members needs and requests.

The mom and dad of two daughters – Delaney Mostrenko, 9, and Adriana Mostrenko, 13 – wanted to teach their children to appreciate what they have early on in life.

“We decided that our kids are spoiled and that we needed to give back to our community,” Stacey said.

“Hopefully by the time they are 18, 19, 20 they have a good appreciation for what they have done and what the needs of the community are,” Stacey said.

“We also want them to realize how much effort it is to raise the money,” neighbour Carla Scott said.

Carla and daughter Grace Scott have helped the Mostrenko’s for eight years.

On Monday, the families met in the new Wal-Mart and assigned teams to shop for a 14-year-old and 10-year-old

boy, as well as a 10-month-old boy.

The kids shopped through the aisles, choosing a NERF gun and gaming headphones for the hamper children.

Although not a requirement, the group was also able to buy a Staples gift card and other small gifts for the hamper mom, who will be going back to school in the new year.

The group was also required to supply the sponsored family with items for a Christmas dinner, or purchase a food gift certificate for the family to do their own shopping.

When all the must-have toys were found, the gifts were scanned through the till with an additional discount added by the store.

The group had about $500 leftover, which they plan to donate to the Friends in Need Food Bank to further help other families this season.

On Monday afternoon, the group planned to meet one last time and wrap the gifts, enjoy hot chocolate and watch a Christmas movie in the Mostrenko’s garage.

Stacey is expected to drop the gifts to the hamper family on Dec. 22.

“I think it was our best bottle drive yet,” Adriana said, smiling.

Taking the drivers seat for safe travels Operation Red Nose allows one woman to see the direct effects of her help.

As a registered massage therapist, Jennifer Campbell sees the altering life impacts of those affected by motorvehicle accidents every day.

“I see so many people with ICBC claims from car accidents,” Campbell said, adding that many of her new patients in January book appointments as a result of an accident in December.

The typical injuries, Campbell said, are whiplash, headaches, and muscle strain, as well as more severe ailments, like spinal injuries.

Jennifer Campbell has been giving safe rides home for four years.

The recovery time for an injury, Campbell explained, can be upwards of six months to a year and a half.

Two years ago, Campbell joined the Operation Red Nose Ridge-Meadows team

after helping the Tri-Cities location for two years prior.

For the massage therapist, volunteering with ORN allows her to see the direct effects of her efforts each time she parks a community

members vehicle on their driveway.

“I see the driving, and I know there are so many Christmas parties, as well as bad road conditions,” Campbell said.

The largest donation she’s received was $100 from a couple who hosted a work party, and also paid for all of their employees to get home through the service.

“Everyone is so friendly [and] grateful for the service,” Campbell added.

The service began on Nov. 27, and has one last day of service on Dec. 31, or New Years Eve from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Campbell, who is thinking about getting one last night of volunteering in until next year, expects the service to be its busiest.

Run rings in new year Crowds of people rushed the chilly waters of Alouette Lake on New Year’s Day, 2015.

For Eric and Lorie Muller, there’s no better way to ring in the new year than with a run at Osprey Village in Pitt Meadows.

And once again, they’re extending the invitation to the community to join them on New Years Day at the riverfront community.

Participants are reminded to dress for the weather, as the event goes rain, shine, or whatever else Old Man Winter happens to dish out.

While there is no fee to run, donations are accepted for the local charity Athletes In TIMESf iles Kind.

Eric and Lorie Muller AIK supports families with children in cancer treatment at BC Children’s Hospital.

“2015 was Athletes In Kind 10th year of supporting families battling cancer,” Muller noted.

And, he said, as of January 2016, “AIK has a new home within Sole Experience Running Company’s new shop, right in Osprey Village.”

“When the Mullers started the event, “we were hoping a few running friends would show up,” he reflected.

“But, if they didn’t that was okay because the four of us would run as a family.”

These days, Muller said, “families we only see on New Years Day have made it their family tradition. We think that’s pretty great.”

More than $1,000 was raised, and more than 150 people came out for last year’s event.

“Some of our guests have been coming since their kids were in their backpacks, to strollers, and now are running beside their parents and grandparents.”

This year’s event kicks off with sign-in beginning at 9 a.m., and the run starting at 10. The start time “gives you time to sleep, run or walk with friends and family, and still see the start of a Bowl Game,” Muller added.

Some might say it’s crazy, but for Ross Davies, there’s something “cleansing and honest” about taking part in the annual New Year’s Day polar bear dip at the Alouette Lake boat launch.

Davies, a program interpreter for the Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society (KEEPS,) “works with salmon” and said that to understand how the climate’s changing and the conditions the fish are facing these days, “the best thing to do is to get in the water with them, and experience what they’re experiencing.”

Last year was his first time taking part in the dip, and “we had it good,” he recalled.

A big one is just around the corner, the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association (RMMHA) Rustlers Winter

Round-up being held at Planet Ice and Pitt Meadows Arena. The tournament – for the Hockey 2, 3, 4, and Atom C divisions – runs Sunday to next Wednesday, Dec. 27 to 30.

Following the Round-Up tourney, and to kick off 2016, is the inaugural New

Year’s Classic that starts on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1 and finishes on Sunday, Jan. 3.

The tournament is open to Juvenile C teams.

All games will take place at Planet Ice’s Cam Neely Arena.

The 2015-2016 speed skating season has been in full swing for the Ridge Meadow Racers, with the club taking part in seven meets all over the Lower Mainland this fall.

A 7-2 win over the Langley Knights on Friday brought the Ridge Meadows Flames to the .500 mark, with a 12-12-2-3 record. The Flames – who hold down fourth spot in the PJHL’s five-team Harold Brittain Conference, are now off until Jan. 2, when they play the Abbotsford Pilots at Richmond Arena.

Maple Ridge’s Victor Bartley, a Nashville Predators defenceman, cleared waivers and is now playing in the AHL.
